Hi everybody

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

In December we will have parades of Moors and Christians held in Alicante and in Monforte del Cid from 5th to 9th. In Santa Pola, like every year, on December the 10th at about 8p.m. in the harbour area, we celebrate the arrival of our Madonna Virgen de Loreto, a little performance about the arrival and then a procession from the harbour to the Castle. There are also local fiestas in Alfaz del Pi, Agost, Callosa d’En Sarria. Pilgrimages taking place in Denia and Sella. Also do not forget on the 28th the spectacular flour battle that takes place in Ibi, “Els Enfarinats” a battle of flour. On the 28th will take place the pilgrimage “Venida de la Virgen” a pilgrimage that stars on Tamarit beach with a representation of the arrival and discovering of the Elche Madona. This month at “Casa de Cultura” in Santa Pola there is a fantastic programme of concerts, all of them will start at the same time 7 p.m., on 17th Christmas Concert by “Associació Musical Mare de Déu de Loreto”, on 21st concert by “Gala Rondalla y Coro El Castell” on 22nd Christmas Concert by “Coral Villa de Santa Pola”, on 26th Christmas Concert by “Banda Unió Musical Villa de Santa Pola and on 2nd of January New Year’s Concert by “Coral Levantina Santa Pola y Coro Infantil Virgen de Loreto”. On the 24th there will be a little parade. The biggest parade will be held on the 5th of January “the Three Kings Parade”. The best one of these parades is the one held in Alcoy, it is simply magic. Also I would like to make a special mention of the most important sport event held in Santa Pola the International Half Marathon Villa de Santa Pola that will be held on the 24th of January at 10:30 a.m.. Come and enjoy this fantastic event. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2017 to all of you! Hello everyone, Well Christmas is here once again but first a look back to Halloween - what a great weekend it was everywhere on Gran Alacant!!! Adults, children and pets enjoying the occasion in their costumes. Have a look at the pictures in the magazine and you will see what I mean!!! What a great 4 nights for M.A.B.S. again! A full house every night for their Winter Wonderland show. There are also lots of Christmas and New Year celebration events planned, we will get a picture of you at one them? We would like to wish a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all our readers and customers who continue to support the magazine year after year. I think it is worse then ever, the amount of dog poop on the pavements is unbelievable, I know this is down to the dirty, irresponsible owners however it has been here so long it is now extremely dry and could easily be swept up. I have to walk in the road with my dog (who I also clean up after and carry various poo bags with me) so that we don't tread in it. We have seen the cleaner lorry, however there are also "barrenderos" which are town hall workers who personally sweep the road, the road down by the school there are barrenderos there every morning sweeping the road, our road has not been swept in years!! This is our issue as we understand the lorry can not clean due to cars parked, however even in the stretch of road where there aren't cars parked, due to the time of day and people being at work, the lorry will not turn around and clean. It just goes down one side and that's it. It is disgusting; I have no idea where our taxes go that we pay as residents here in Gran Alacant, Santa Pola. Is it really that difficult to clean??? Town Hall Answer: First of all, the “barrenderos” are not municipal employees. They are working for URBASER, which is the enterprise that is carried out the cleaning of Santa Pola. However, all the complaints which you transfer to us are also transferred to this company, in order to solve all these problems. Nevertheless, the Infrastructure Councilor is aware of this problem because I have talked to him about this, so as he can solve this as soon as possible, but this is a lack of civism and education.

Update from Ruben and Chrissie: Hi guys, Hope you are well, just a little update. Our street has been cleaned!!! Hallelujah! After years they have finally been round and swept the roads and pavement, they even cleaned up the dried up dog poop. However the day after the pavements were full of poo again.

We really find it hard to believe the “neighbours” who live in this area are so disgusting. We have even confronted a few of them when they have left poop and they have the cheek to get angry and abusive. On Sunday we were out walking and a little boy on his bicycle had to get off the pavement and ride in the road to avoid the dog poo!!! I don’t know how we can solve this problem. Sorry but again I have to keep you updated as to the long ongoing rubbish problem beyond the end of Calle Malta. Exactly what i have forecast is now happening, once a pile of rubbish is established eventually, due to lack of removal by the counsel, it becomes the natural place for people to continue dumping more rubbish. As you see from the photos, it has become the common place for people who work in the gardening business to dump tree stumps, branches & palm leaves etc . It is getting to the point the next lot to be dumped there will block off the path where many people walk down. What a shame nobody cares & the counsel can only say what they will do but rarely actually do what they say & remove the said rubbish. After my last letter they said they had passed on the information to another department & would contact them again to see why it has not been removed after a year(a 30 minute job, which has now become

I again ask if someone from the counsel will be responsible enough to give me a call to arrange for them to meet me so I can show them the extent of the problem. Thank you both for your efforts. We have a municipal department which is in charge to coordinate all the cleaning actions which are going to be taken in our town, so we have transferred both, your information and the photos to them so as they can solve this hot issue. Q: Arenales Is there any update on a hotel in Arenales after a recent protest and hope the building work would continue? Town Hall Answer: As it has been stated in previous numbers, Arenales is not within the municipal term of Santa Pola, therefore the Town Hall has no capacity to act over this issue. However, we understand that there is a matter that can affect our neighbours’ life, so we have transferred again the question to the Elche City Hall, in order to get some information that we can give to you. Q: GA Market Parking: However, it fills me with pride and delight when there is a success story like the siting of the new market. Fair enough, many residents are unhappy about having to come ‘up the hill’ but at least there is transport available for the commute. Back to the market, I remember before it was there - the ‘wasteland' was unsightful but now it’s been transformed in something very much aesthetically pleasing! I still think that the area of land on the same side of the road up past the Sports Centre and the unfinished apartments could be cleared and used as additional parking for the market visitors, especially as some of the traders have decided to occupy ‘parking places’ on the market site… Kind Regards, Helen

Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this issue, the lack of parking places at Market in Gran Alacant is a reality and we are aware. It might be a possible solution to set a parking extra area where you state, so your proposal is going to be transferred to Market Councilor in order to be studied. BARRY’S BITS (of news): I love to read the UK newspapers and since being retired allow myself one every day. But some of the things I read absolutely appall me. The BBC will give more airtime to all religions after being accused by Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs. We live here in Spain and by and large are prepared accept their ways and live here accordingly. Why is it so different in the UK?! In Spain in TVE2 every Sunday morning there is a program that gives relief to all religions. Did you see the joke in a UK paper: My friend says his wife was so upset about the USA Presidential election result, she took Hilary Clinton initials of the bathroom taps. Creo que esta peor que nunca , la cantidad de caca de perro en las aceras es increible, se que es causa de propietarios irresponsables, sin embargo,llevan tanto tiemppo que estan secas y se podrian barrer. Tengo que caminar por la carretera con mi perro (que tambien limpio despues y llevo varias bolsas conmigo)para no pisarlas. Hemos visto el camion de la limpieza, sin embargo, tambien hay "barrenderos"que son trabajadores del ayuntamiento que personalmente barren la calle. En la calle, del colegio hay barrenderos cada manana en nuestra calle no han barrido en años!! Esta es nuestra pregunta, entendemos que el camion no va a girar y limpiar, que solo va por un lado y eso es todo. Es repugnante, no tengo idea de donde van a parar los impuestos que pagamos como residentes de Gran Alacant, Santa Pola. Es realmente dificil limpiar? Aleluya !!! despues de mucho tiempo, por fin ha sido baldeada y barrida, tanto las carreteras como la acera, incluso la caca seca de perro. Sin embargo, al dia siguiente las aceras estaban llenas de caca de perro otra vez. Nos resulta dificil de creer que los “vecinos” que viven en esta zona sean tan sucios. Nos hemos enfrentado a algunos de ellos cuando no han recogido la caca y tienen la cara de enojarse y comportarse de forma abusiva. El domingo estabamos paseando y un chico que iba en su bicicleta se tuvo que bajar de la acera y salir a la carretera para evitar las cacas de perro. No se como se podra resolver este problema, pero gracias a ambos por haber hablado con el ayuntamiento sobre nuestra calle. Justo lo que habia previsto esta ocurriendo ahora, una vez que amontonan basura, y debido a que el ayuntamiento no la retira, se convierte en el lugar natural para que la gente continue arrojando basura, como se aprecia en las imagenes, ademas se ha convertido en el lugar donde los que trabajan en jardineria arrojen los troncos de arboles, ramas y hojas de palma etc.. Esta llegando a un punto en el que si cae bloqueara la calle por donde camina mucha gente.

Es una pena a nadie le importa y el Ayuntamiento solo dice lo que hara, pero rara vez hacen realmente lo que dijeron, que si pasan la informacion a otro departamento y volverian a contactar con ellos para ver porque no se ha eliminado, despues de un ano!!(un trabajo de 30 minutos que ahora se ha convertido en un trabajo de 2 horas!!! Seguramente quien envia la informacion de un departamento a otro debe ir a comprobar si el trabajo se ha llevado a cabo y si no darle la patada. Me temo que esto es lo que el ayuntamiento necesita, tal vez para hacer que hagan lo que les PAGAMOS a hacer. Vuelvo a preguntar si el ayuntamiento sera lo suficientemente responsable para darme una llamada para conocerme y les pueda mostrar el problema. Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: Como se ha indicado en los números anteriores, Arenales no está dentro del término municipal de Santa Pola, por lo tanto el Ayuntamiento no tiene competencia para actuar sobre este tema.Sin embargo, entendemos que es una cuestión que puede afectar a la vida de nuestros vecinos, por lo que hemos transferido de nuevo la pregunta al Ayuntamiento de Elche, estamos a la espera de poder darles información sobre este tema.

Mercado Gran Alacant Me llena de orgullo y placer cuando hay una historia con exito como es el nuevo emplazamiento del Mercado de GA. Muchos se han quejado de que hay que subir “la colina” , pero al menos hay transporte. Recuerdo antes de que estuviese el mercado el terreno era horroroso y ahora ha sido transformado en algo esteticamente agradable!! Sigo pensando que la superficie de tierra al lado del Centro Deportivo y los apartamentos sin acabar podria utilizarse como aparcamiento adicional para los visitantes del mercado , ya que algunos comerciantes ocupan plazas de aparcamiento con sus puestos! MABS Winter Wonderland

The M.AB.S. Winter Wonderland show held in the American Rock Bar in the GA Centre was once again a huge success, in spite of the long awaited snow machine breaking down after the opening night! The fun and laughter did not freeze up but melted into reels of laughter with the fun, loving and daring M.A.B.S. lads and Dominic the Christmas donkey who played the audience up. The singers and the dancers in their colourful costumes sponsored by Aquarius Restaurant lit the Christmas spirit all through the show. Thanks to wonderful crowds every night who once again gave us all standing ovations which we can claim made another M.A.B.S. event go down in history. The grand sum of 2, 944 euros was raised over the four nights. With the help of Margaret and Ian Smith, the printer Bill for the tickets and the helpers at the door, the ladies in the dressing rooms and our very special new make up artist Mary and all the newbies who were thrown in at the deep end. Thank you all who took part and all our wonderful supporters that make all the teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hard work so very worthwhile. Thank you all so much. MONTERMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB The season is now well underway. Matadors and Toreadors, Monday and Fridays, with the Winter League on Wednesdays. All have started not too badly, so hopefully we can keep it going and have a good season. 4321 Competition The 4321 competition was played over two Sundays 9th and 10th October with six teams of five bowlers in each team. After two good mornings bowling the cup was won by Dave Melville, Mike Farrelly, Alan Ashberry, Bill Young and Jan Gatward. We entertained over a hundred bowlers from the UK in October. Following the bowling with each touring team we enjoyed lunch, drinks and a chat. Also a few promises of a return visit. Tuesday 25th October We held our first monthly dinner dance at the Belfry. The food and entertainment was excellent, which all made for a enjoyable evening. On the last Sunday of the month we now hold a new competition named a chicken run. It has proved to be quite popular. The winning lady and man win a chicken, the losing lady and man win half dozen eggs. The event proved a great sucsess once again with games and face painting along with other activities but the star activity was the traditional costume contest. The prizes were donated by shops, vetinary clinics and other proffesionals from the town listed at the bottom of the page. All proceeds from the event help to pay for vacinations to pets who wouldn’t otherwise be vaccinated.

Chatter VERY BRITISH PROBLEMS! Not everything is perfect in paradise, all the time, as a friend here in Gran Alacant reminded me the other day. I had popped out after work, to meet a couple of friends and bumped into one of the first people I ever met in GA. She had a few things on her mind, things that were niggling away at her, things she felt strongly about. Life in Gran Alacant is by and large positive; from the weather and community to the beaches and pace of life; none of these are in question. Like anywhere however, there are still annoying aspects that need to be aired. I promised I would write what I could, expressing not only hers but many others, points of view, as well. As a writer, one has to be prepared to tackle all subjects, in order to obtain a balanced view, of any situation or circumstance, that may be of concern to local residents. Life isn’t always auspicious, there are times when all of us have misgivings and concerns. This months column will aim to tackle a few of the problems, that those who live here have approached me with, asking me to highlight. The issues raised; their sobriety and importance in this community, is without a doubt, high on the local residents, list of concerns. Bingo, yes bingo, is one of those traditional British pastimes, harmless, played by all ages and not something one would imagine to be a bowl of contention. In Spain, bingo, at least in a gambling sense, is illegal, outside of registered and authorised establishments. The ins ad outs of why or whether it is justified, are not important in this article; that is a matter for the Spanish Government. What is

crucial, is the feelings of those who’s only crime, is to enjoy an afternoon out, in a local bar with friends, playing a game of Bingo, subsequently raided, in a manner, considered by many, as a heavy handed approach by the National Police. This left many patrons, both old and young, a little aghast at being locked in, searched, ID taken and items removed from the scene, as though everyone there were criminals. This has happened on several occasions, branding, in the words of one, more vocal resident, all of us as ‘Bingo Terrorists’. On one occasion, seven Policemen were sent to deal with a situation that could have been avoided, with less dramatic consequences. This is prize based Bingo and not a ‘money making one’, which does make all the difference, under Spanish Gambling laws. The British bring a lot of jobs to this area in particular; to scare the locals, many of whom contribute towards this community, was in my interviewees eyes unacceptable. A quiet word would have been far more effective and less troublesome for all those involved! People who play Bingo are in the main from the older generation, in Gran Alacant. The upset caused, will have long lasting effects on those who play the game, many of whom have never had dealings with the Police at all. This was a community based event for socialising, especially for the elderly. Bingo is also medically recognised as beneficial in delaying the onset of Dementia and Alzheimers. An innocent game, a social event, a gathering of older people and therapy to delay serious medical conditions, not criminal activity! The second bowl of contention I was presented with this week is the growing problem of dog excrement up and down

this urbanization. Personally I don’t know the history of this particular problem in Gran Alacant, but coming from Britain, I am well aware of how it used to be there. From my observances, The UK at least has been successful in dealing with this social problem. Owners are required by law to clean up after their animals, placing faeces in the bins provided. I hadn’t lived in Gran Alacant too long, before I realised that this area had a problem with dogs fowling on the local streets and their owners, not removing the offending mess. From what I have been told, at one stage there was a threat to employ a dog warden to Police this and other issues associated with our K9 friends, but by and large this has abated somewhat. With this warning, there was a marked improvement in the problem. Consequently this impendence has now been lifted and the problem has returned, which is a shame for everyone that lives here. I have been a big community activist in the past, and understand the benefits of ‘People Power’. Local people want this problem eradicated and working together, they will achieve their goal. It does take everyone to play their part. Dog owners must clean up after their animals and others should remain vigilant, standing up for their rights to live in a clean environment. Gran Alacant is a lovely place to reside, it is just a shame that a small minority are spoiling it for others. Maybe a little more education, alerting everyone to the dangers to health, as well as the blight. such anti social behaviour causes, could be employed. One would hope, at least, that close monitoring of this growing menace continues and persistent offenders are helped to change their habits, creating a much more pleasant

neighbourhood, for everyone to live in. Finally, I have had several residents approach me, wanting to talk about the pavements, throughout the urbanization. Whilst the aesthetics of the footpaths are pleasing to the eye and in my view, far above anything in the UK, the practical purpose, for which they are intended, has been compromised, in the view of many who live here. The surface of the slabs used are notoriously slippery, even when it is not raining; with an ageing population who live here permanently, the hazards involved, in a simple stroll to the local shop, bus stop or local schools, can result in injury. A simple undertaking , can turn into a disaster. It is true to say, that it rarely rains in Gran Alacant, but when it does, these pavements are a terrible hazard and should be avoided. I myself have always walked on the tarmac roads when it is wet, having fallen over numerous times, since I have lived here. Walking on the roads, does have its own problems also, especially in the less well lit areas. There has been some improvement in recent times, with some more dangerous areas, having pavements replaced or improved. There is still a long way to go though. In the interim, the local populace do what they can to avoid the worst zones. A slightly different blog this month, but one, which includes issues, that need to be aired and spoken about. It is important that local people have a voice on all topics of interest, concern and pride, both here and abroad. Like any local town, city and urbanization, there are naturally going to be occasional misgivings and problems. With co-operation, working with the local authority or Police in conjunction with those who live in Gran Alacant, these reservations are not insurmountable.

unday October 2nd saw the Abel Anton 10km cross country run taking place in Gran Alacant, supported by Sporting Clubs of Santa Pola, Commercial enterprises of Gran Alacant, lots of local supporters and volunteers but not forgetting the 259 runners. The race is held every October and although it has been hosted for many years this was my first opportunity to participate. Abel Anton is a Spanish long distance runner who won gold medals in the marathon at the world championships in 1997 and 1999. In between time he was the first Spaniard to win the London marathon. When I registered for the run I hadn't expected we would be running "off road" as all other runs I have taken part in around here are flat. We set of from Mercadona's carpark heading up Avda Mediterraneo. Any pre race plans I had on a target pace were soon

forgotten as we went through the first mile at least a minute faster than my plan. Oh well let's slow down a bit as we still have another mile of uphill running, but now we are "off road" having turned off Avda Mediterraneo at the top bend as we headed towards the tarmac road leading to El Faro. At 2 miles I was now 2 minutes ahead of my target, surely I was going to blow up and pay for it later, then without any noticeable change in effort or pace we were on the flat and I was running faster. From here on it was either flat or down hill as we covered the white tracks between the N332 and El Faro, so let's try and maintain the pace as long as possible, and then you are racing. No one's passing me now. So 4 miles later I crossed the finishing line in 51 mins, 45 secs, which is my best time for a long time. Thanks go to the sponsors and supporters. I will be back next year to try again. In the meantime, there is the Santa Pola half marathon (21km) which is 22 January 2017 generally reregarded as one of the best half marathons in Europe. The Royal British Legion Caring and campaigning for our ex-Service community. The Gran Alacant & La Marina Branch of the Royal British Legion, in association with the Ayutamiento of San Fulgencio, held their annual Service of Remembrance on Sunday 13th November. This open-air service was held in the main square of San Fulgencio – the Plaza de Constitución. It was conducted in both Spanish and English, by a Catholic Priest Jose Francisco, and an Anglican Priest, the Reverend Terry Baxter. In attendance were Lieutenant Salvador of the Guardia Civil; Chief Martin of the Policia Local, and six councillors from both the ruling team,and the opposition. These included the councillor for European residents, Paulino Herrero. They were accompanied by more than 100 local residents of both nationalities. The Last Post and Reveille were played by former Royal Marine, John Atkins. Following the service, wreathes were laid at the temporary altar, and were later transferred to the altar inside the church. Out & About with Star & Ashlee Cuevas de Canelobre

Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 6 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to share our visit to the Cuevas de Canelobre at Busot. Ashlee and I went here on Sunday 13th November and thoroughly enjoyed the views and the Caves. Located just 50km and a 50 minute drive away from Gran Alacant, the Canelobre Caves are one of the main tourist attractions, not only of Busot but of the entire province of Alicante. The drive up takes you through some impressive mountains and the views are amazing. The cave entrance opens out at a height of 700 metres in altitude on the western face of the Cabeçó d’Or Mountain range. There is limited parking directly outside the Caves and a small car park further down the hill. Entrance costs €7 for adults (age 14+), children €4.50 (aged 5 to 14) and those under 5 years old are free. You can also get group tickets. Once you have paid you need to wait until they are ready to take you in on an official tour. These are available in English. Once inside the cave you are not permitted to take photographs but they take one of you as you go in and this is available at the end of your tour along with a DVD of pictures for €6. Your ticket also gives you free entrance to the Museum of Ethnic Music, located in Busot. The Canelobre Caves were formed in limestone rock during the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous periods (from 120-150 million years ago). The slow dissolution of the rock progressed downwards into the mountain, giving rise to the large gallery, which is 2,000 m2 in area and has a volume of 20,000, making it the eighth largest cavity in

Some of these have been given names such as “The Holy Family” which is more than 25 metres high and “El Canelobre” a stalamite in the centre of the hall that is more than 100,000 years old!! Because of the impressive acoustics, the Cuevas de Canelobre is the perfect setting for numerous musical performances which are held here throughout the year. These events, along with the amazing lighting inside the cave, provide a

spectacle not just for the eyes but also the ears!!! Christmas is here!! I can't believe that we have been learning Spanish recipes for 12 months already! I would like to thank everyone, Lou and Ged for thinking of me for this page and all of you for your support! Of course, this month a typical Christmas recipe, although in Spain it depends on the province. The most typical is seafood as a starter and a meat or a fish dish as main course. Lets start!!! I have chosen two that are very easy. Gulas with prawns as starter and Sirloin of pork Pedro Ximenez.

Peel the prawns, cut 1 garlic clove into slices. Heat oil in a pan and fry 1-2 cloves of garlic cloves and the chili. When the garlic is golden, add prawns and cook for 1 minute. Add sliced garlic and cook for another minute. Add the wine and gulas, cook for 2 minutes. Serve Hot!

Pork Sirloin Pedro Ximenez 1 pork tenderloin (450gr) 1/2 onion 1 glass of chicken broth 1/2 glass wine Pedro Ximenez 1 tablespoon flour salt and olive oil

Trim the sirloin by removing the fat and cut into medallions. Season medallions and seal in a pan with a little bit of oil and reserve. Peel and cut the onion and in the same pan fry the onion. When the onion is soft, add 1 table spoon of flour. Fry flour for few seconds, add the wine and the broth. Cook for 20 pepper minutes. Serve with roast potatoes, peas and mushrooms.

Better late than never. I must apologise for the time it has taken me to write this message of thanks. I must first and foremost thank Rob and Ros for the quick response to acquiring the equipment for Mervyn, ie a hospital bed, wheel chair and zimmer frame. Unfortunately Merv only managed a few days with the zimmer frame as after that he was bed bound but I’m saying that he was kept very comfortable with the excellent hospital bed and the ripple mattress. At one time when we first used the ripple mattress he complained that I had put “a lot of pies in the bed”. Due to Rob and Ros Mervyn also had an excellent nurse called Ann. She was very hands on and had a very calming presence. She also organised help with one of her team of nurses to meet me at the hospital when I had to take Mervyn for a scan. If anyone is in the same situation needs help with a member of their family with cancer, please do not hesitate to ring Rob or Ros for help, as you must contact them directly to ask for their help. Mervyn was made as comfortable as possible at home as the doctors had told me that his cancer had gone beyond the help of Chemo or Radio therapy. I miss him so much. Thank you to everybody who supported me at the time and all who attended Merv’s funeral. I must give special thanks to Mac and Angie for the lovely spread they put on for Merv after the funeral. Also, big thanks to Martyn and Sue for all their help going to and from the Airport to collect and take back my 3 daughters and for Sue for sitting with Mervyn if I had to go out. Thanks as well to Val Dolphin for spending time with me and for the chats. It was all very appreciated. BAD BREATH Many of us have worried from time to time that we may have bad breath. Have you noticed people stepping back a little when you talk to them, has someone turned their cheek as you moved to kiss them? A simple test is just to lick the inside of your wrist and sniff; if it smells bad you can be fairly certain your breath does too. Bad breath is a very common problem; it may just be transient due to particularly pungent meal that you have just had. Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases released by the bacteria that coat your teeth, gums and tongue. Also, bits of food that get caught between the teeth and on the tongue will rot and can sometimes cause an unpleasant smell. Strong foods like garlic, coffee and onions can add to the problem as will smoking. So it is very important to brush your teeth correctly and

regularly. This will help keep your breath smelling fresh. Bad breath can also be caused by some medical problems. Dry mouth (xerostomia) is a condition that means your mouth produces less saliva. This causes bacteria to build up in your mouth and this leads to bad breath. Dry mouth may be caused by some medicines, by salivary gland problems or by continually breathing through your mouth instead of your nose. Older people may produce less saliva, causing further problems. Other medical conditions that cause bad breath include infections in the throat, nose or lungs; sinusitis; bronchitis; diabetes; or liver or kidney problems. If you do have bad breath, you will need to start a routine for keeping your mouth clean and fresh. Regular check-ups will allow your dentist to watch out for any places where plaque is caught between your teeth and he will be able to clean all those areas that are difficult to reach.

HEALTHY CHRISTMAS This is our last article this year, and this time we wouldn’t like to write about diseases, diagnostics or vaccines. We would just like to wish a merry Christmas to every pet and owner; we would also like to thank our clients and readers for their confidence, and to remind everybody Christmas is a perfect moment for cuddling and protecting our pets. Just a minute! To protect them against what? Against the excess of food, of course! At this time of year, it’s very common to eat different (and unusual) kinds of food, specially sweets, and it’s also very common to see how dogs, cats, hamsters, and even parrots get fatter and fatter because they are allowed to taste chocolate bonbons and nougats. As a matter of fact, I remember a cat (the cat I owned when I was a child), that, after “sharing” a Christmas banquet at home had an appointment for a routine health check including a blood test. The most dangerous situation is foreign body ingestion. Animals may swallow almost everything, no matter if it is related to food or not. Sometimes they may swallow toys, such as rubber balls, bottle caps, bracelets, and even a centerpiece! This is probably the most original foreign body we have ever removed from the stomach of a dog. Normally, indigestions are not very worrying and in most cases going searching for emergency Vets for this reason at Christmas is not necessary (remember it’s very difficult and expensive to find a vet on duty on Christmas day), so normally we can leave it for the next day if we just take the precaution of removing the food bowl. But if we consider the animal may have swallowed a foreign body, it cannot be left for later: we must find an emergency Vet immediately. Finally, let me send a big hug to all those pets and people we will never see again because they passed away this year. Specially, a big kiss to aunt Nieves. I miss you.

He looks like German Shepherd cross and will be medium size when fully grown.

Tino is a small 20 month old Lancashire Heeler breed, he is small and quite stocky weighing 9 kilos. Tino is negative for all Mediterranean diseases, neutered, chipped and vaccinated. Tino is great with other dogs and really is a wonderful little boy.

Timmy and Harry have been adopted from our last edition. Sunny is a 7 month old pup and looks a little like a Beagle cross. She is happy and content to be near all people including children. Sunny has been used to living outside in a farmhouse courtyard with another dog but will very soon adapt to sleeping at night in a house with a new owner. She is vaccinated and with microchip.

Tinkerbell is a 6 year old siamese ready for adoption. She is sterilised, very loving but not keen on other other animals so really needs to be an only cat. She needs lots of love and to be spoilt as she has had a hard time, found wondering the streets traumatised and starving

Christmas shopping â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you either love it or hate it, and I am firmly in the camp which says they'd rather spend an hour in a dentist's chair than go through the stress and nausea of finding presents for people you don't like in crowded shopping centres. I suppose many of you will go along (or be dragged to) Zenia Boulevard just south of Torrevieja, where there is a wide range of shops suitable for your festive gifts. For those of you who are doing this reluctantly, or who want to see something rather special in the way of wildlife, why not take a small detour during your journey? Take the turning off the N332 for Torrevieja Hospital, go past it towards an urbanisation called Los Balcones, take a right turn at the second roundabout and go along the road towards the salt lake and park where the metalled road ends. Walk a little further on, and listen for a raucous screeching sound. What you should find is a small flock of the very colourful Azure-winged Magpies, which do not normally occur in our area, although it is fairly common in woodlands in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. Over the past six or seven years, a wandering family of these birds have set up their home at this location, and Los Balcones is the only reliable site in our area to see

You may think I'm cheating by telling you about birds which aren't actually in the Clot, but one or two have been seen there, probably stragglers from this particular group. Also known as the Iberian Magpie or Rabilargo in Spanish, it is the smallest member of the crow family, and in Europe it is confined to Iberia. Intriguingly it is also found across the other side of the world, in China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan, but they do not migrate between these two vastly separated locations, they are distinct resident populations. They often squabble among themselves, but they are also remarkably sociable and co-operative when it comes to breeding. Each pair bonds monogamously for life and both immature and adult birds within a breeding colony help their fellow Azurewings with nest building, supplying food to incubating females and feeding the young. They are not at all fussy about their diet. They enjoy soft fruits, acorns, pine nuts, berries, insects, grubs and other invertebrates, and will even come into gardens for kitchen scraps, even bread crumbs on bird tables.
