We are now well into 2016. Guys don’t forget its Valentines on the 14th and now some good news! ABTA are predicting a bumper year for Spain with holiday bookings already well up on last year. Lets hope Gran Alacant has its share of visitors. Lou and I had previouslly lived in Northern Ireland for 17 years before moving here. We can’t believe the winter weather you guys get here !!! So far so good, lets hope it continues as we look forward to our first full year ahead of us. We at the GA Advertiser will continue to harass the council to keep our area clean and tidy as there seem to have been a decline in certain areas and we want to know why that is ... Have a good month, Lou & Ged

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ... In February you can enjoy Moors and Christians parades in Bocairente on 2nd and in Sax 1st to the 5th . Another activity in February are Carnivals, all Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate. Carnivals, one of the best in the area is the one held in Torrevieja, there are several events. Main carnival parades on Saturday the 6 January to Sunday the 13th of February, like in Torrevieja held on Sunday the 7th and the night carnival parade on the 13th.
Like every February do not miss the Almond blossom in Jalon or Guadalest valleys. But if you want to see something special go to see my favourite “El valle de la Seta” and enjoy the little villages of Famorca and Facheca. It could be beginning, middle or end of the month, but it lasts about ten days. Bye-bye my friends ... until next month. DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS BUT NO WEBSITE ? NO WORRIES ... We have teamed up with BlueMoon Solutions who have for many years been advertising and writing articles for us. Give our magazine a call and we can put you onto a SPECIAL PRICE through us, for Richard to design you a website.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, and answers to your questions from Councillor of Citizen Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Question: Rubbish Container from Calle Creta has been picked up – thank you Town Hall for arranging that. Good work and our readers are very pleased.
However, the street has not been cleaned up and our readers feel that overall street cleansing has deteriorated over the last 7-8 months. Is there a reason Why? Town Hall Answer: Regarding this matter, we have asked Urbaser, the enterprise which carries out the local cleaning, to clean the streets and to remove all the little weeds that are growing up without any kind of control. We hope that the neighbourhood will be satisfied as soon as possible with the street cleaning. Question: Many of the advertising boards after the entrance to GA have been taken down. Why?? Town Hall Answer: Related to this, those advertising boards are

not the property of the Town Hall, so we are not authorized in order to ask for this issue. Question: SEZADU We like to use the coffee shop Sezadu which has parking outside adjacent to the school. The Urbanisation that it is part of, have decided to gate their community. They have put the gates BEFORE the coffee shop, rather than AFTER the coffee shop, meaning that the business is now gated in, losing their parking slots, and probably not helping their business. Who on earth made that decision, unless of course someone knows better? Town Hall Answer: After talking to our Infrastructure Department, they have informed us that this is a decision made by the owners’ community of the urbanization. Thus, citizens who want to go into that coffee shop must ask the community for permission. Question: TAXIS Hello Barry, Sandra, Lou and Ged, I wanted to update you and the residents of GA on hiring taxis. There is a very good android app, available free on Play Store,
called Taxi Santa Pola, which covers the Gran Alacant area. I have used it three times now, each time after midnight. It is easy to use, the person answering the phone speaks English and the service has been first class, usually turning up within minutes of the call. However, there is a downside. On each occasion the taxi arrived to collect me showing at least Euro 6 on the metre, meaning a short journey from top Alacant to bottom Alacant is costing around Euro 11. This raises the issue of whether "private" taxis have a role to play in Gran Alacant. Market forces will drive the demand, and if a "private" taxi costs 50% of a legitimate taxi, then locals are going to use "private" taxis in preference to the legitimate taxis. Can you please raise this with the Town Hall as they need to know of this and offer an explanation as to why it is happening. Many Thanks, Geoff Town Hall Answer: Regarding to illegal taxi

drivers, despite all the inconvenience mentioned before, the Town Hall is working with legal taxi drivers and Conselleria in order to get more taxi licenses (including those for handicapped people) so as all the citizens can have a much better transport service. However, we will transfer the “complaint” to the local legal taxi drivers so as they are aware about the situation. We appreciate that our citizens inform us about what really happens in our village so as we can improve as much as possible. M.A.B.S. Christine’s experience of M.A.B.S after losing her husband Mervyn to Cancer has been printed below, as told to us by Jean. We also spoke with Christine about the help she had received from M.A.B.S and stressed how she would never have coped without their support. So please, if you ever need their help, do not hesitate to ask. M.A.B.S operates all along the Spanish coast and are a massive organization. They are here to help. Christine Holmes lost her wonderful husband Mervyn to cancer last week. She contacted Bob Clay who is in La Marina from M.A.B.S Cancer Support Group. Within hours every thing that Christine needed to make things a little more comfortable for Mervyn arrived. Nurses appeared every day and carers who sat with Mervyn when Christine needed to do shopping etc. This was
at no cost to her as all of you who have donated over the years to M.A.B.S helped make his last days a little more bearable. Although I as a fundraiser don’t know whom M.A.B.S helps, as we are only fundraisers, we have a dedicated department which anyone can phone as they have done in the past. Bob Clay can be contacted on 966790775 or mobile 699894183, or you can contact me Jean on 966841276. We are only a phone call away for support. Please call don’t delay M.A.B.S is always around don’t go it alone. This is why we need a hospice in Gran Alacant to help people in their final days. CAMPER-VAN PARKING: See that a notice has gone up at the Carabasi beach car park stopping camper-vans from parking up there all winter. At last someone has seen sense and put a stop to it. TOWN HALL NEWS: Do you have any news/ achievements/plans in general you would like to tell our readers about?? Actually, we have made a new events regulation in order to provide our citizens with the best attention so as any association or enterprise can arrange any kind of show or act.
culture or employment. We hope this budget can change all the disparity and the difficult situations that families in Santa Pola (including Gran Alacant, of course) are having nowadays. NEW LIDL: The revamped much bigger Lidl store on Gran Alacant is making good headway. Another lovely store for us all in the near future.
SANTA POLA MARATHON: Whilst the magazine is at the printers The Santa Pola half marathon will have taken place. 300 runners took part at the first event, over 10,000 this year. What a monumental event this is for Santa Pola. Next month we will have a report from one of the runners, with the entire inside info. ... more news next month If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please email granalacantadverttiser@ hotmail.co.uk
Furthermore, we are managing the current local budget in order to start prioritising areas such as social action, education,

New “ Bridge of Love” on Gran Alacant ?
It seems the sweetheart padlock trend has reached the Skywalk in Gran Alacant. Couples are beginning to attach padlocks as a symbol of their love to each other and then throw away the key. The history of this dates back 100 years to a Serbian melancholic tale of World War I. It began at the “Bridge of Love” in the spa town Vrnjacka Banja. It tells a story of local schoolmistress called Nada who fell in love with an Serbian officer called Relja. After they committed to each other Relja went to war in Greece where he fell in love with a local woman. Nada never recovered, and after some time she died due to her broken heart. As young women from Vrnjacka Banja wanted to protect their own relationships, they started writing the names of their loved ones on padlocks and attaching them to the bridge where Nada and Relja used to meet.
It has become popular worldwide since the early 2000s and has spread all all over the world. Some authorities treat the padlocks as vandalism or litter because the bridges get too heavy and the padlocks need to be cut off, yet others embrace them and use them for fundraising projects and tourist attractions.

It is often assumed that if you look after your teeth you can stop worrying about the health of your mouth. Gum disease is far more of a problem in the adult population than dental decay. It has been linked to several serious conditions such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes. It is far and away the main reason adults have to have teeth extracted. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums where they become red and swollen, often accompanied with bleeding. This can then progress to periodontal disease which affects the tissues supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease is slow acting but progressive. It does not usually cause pain so you may not notice the damage until it is quite severe.
Then it can lead to abscesses, sore gums and ultimately teeth becoming loose. All gum disease is caused by plaque, a film of bacteria that forms on the surface of the teeth. If left in place plaque calcifies into hard tartar which is far more difficult to remove. The signs of gum disease are bleeding from the gums when brushing or eating, you may get a bad taste and your breath can become unpleasant. Treating gum disease will involve your dentist removing all plaque & tartar from your teeth. A good oral care regime at home is essential backed up with regular scale and polishes at your dentist at least every 6 months. You will never get back the bone support that has been lost but it should be possible to stop (or at least slow down) any further loss, preventing future tooth loss. Preventing periodontal problems should be your main concern and is easily achievable with a good home oral care regime coupled with regular scale and polishes at your dental clinic. Dr. Paul Saliba, British Dental Practice

T
he rules on how you can access your pension savings from age 55 have changed. From age 55, you can access as much of your savings from your defined contribution pension scheme (also known as money purchase schemes/ personal pensions) as you want under new ‘pensions flexibility’ rules. However, schemes don’t have to offer these options. The good news is that you may be able to transfer your pension to a pension provider that offers the option that you want to use. You can access your pension benefits in a number of different ways: You can take money direct from your pension pot without having to buy an annuity. You can put funds into income drawdown. There are no limits on how much or how little you can take from your pension fund each year. You can take a tax free pension commencement lump sum of up to 25% of your pension pot however drawdown payments are taxed as income You can use some or all of your funds to buy an annuity that will be payable at least for the rest of your life. You can transfer your pension to an overseas pension scheme (QROPS). Changes made to the legislation covering
pensions savings in overseas schemes bring them in line with the 2015 changes made to the rules for UK registered pension schemes, but still retain some benefits over and above UK schemes. If you are already retired or planning your retirement its essential that you review your options whether you opt for an annuity, a SIPP, a QROPS but ensure you take advice from a UK regulated company as the most suitable advice for you at this time could be do nothing. If you have a Defined Benefit pension scheme (Final salary/company pension) there may be an opportunity to transfer to a flexible pension scheme should it be the most suitable option for your situation The UK State Pension is also changing, if you are not old enough to receive this find out how much you are going to receive, don’t leave it until you retire and then find out it’s insufficient to live on. Next Month: Reviewing your investments inside your pension. To review your retirement planning and/or Investments, please contact me on 647 681 974 or terryexpatpensions@terra.com

A woman was taking a nap on Valentine’s Day afternoon. After she awoke, she told her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a gorgeous and expensive diamond necklace for Valentine’s Day! What do you think it means?” “You’ll know tonight,” he said. That evening, her husband came home with a small package for her. Thrilled, she opened it and found a book titled “The Meaning of Dreams.”

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY
One of the facts which February implies is Valentine’s day, so in this article we are going to write about how do animals “fall in love”. Most people know the way dogs and cats reproduce. Female dogs usually have two seasons a year, and sexually active period in cats starts in January and finishes in June (that is, when days are getting longer). In both cases, males don’t have a “season”: they are just ready when females are. In previous articles we explained the main reason of reproductive seasons is to make possible to raise the offspring under the optimal conditions of weather and availability of food.
Other animal species reproductive habits are not so well known. Sometimes, we even misunderstand their mating language because it may look like aggression. In case of turtles, males move their head just like they are “nodding”, and then they the head to hit the female. That’s the way he is demanding her attention. If everything goes ok, a few days later, the female will lay (and bury) the eggs. In case of turtles, their parental tasks end here: the babies will be able to eat and take care of themselves immediately after breaking the eggshell. We have heard sometimes that a turtle has “attacked” somebody by hitting his shoes with the head, and even hitting a stone. Well, that’s not exactly an “an aggression”… Another interesting case is hedgehogs. They are very common in this area, and usually live in dry habitats: sand hills, bushes and urbanizations. Hedgehogs
56
don’t create permanent couples. When the female is in season and a male meets her, he starts the courtship ritual which lasts for 1-2 hours, for making her relax. In case of a female hedgehog “relaxing” implies her spines are not pointing up but “combed” in order to not to hurt the male during the mating. After 90-120 minutes, the mating is finished and male and female follow their way. A few weeks later the female will have the babies (there are some videos available in youtube) and will take care of them till they are independent. By the way, the babies are born with their spines under the skin for avoiding any damage to the mom during the delivery. For us, the most special case is swifts. Those birds have practically no legs, only feet. This means they have claws for gripping rocks or walls, but their legs are not developed enough for walking. Their wings are much longer than their legs. So, how can the male tread the female? Well, swifts only solution for almost everything is flying. Swift is probably the only species which eat, sleep and mate while flying. They use holes at the rocks as a home, but they are unable to build a nest. The female will lay the eggs in the hole at the rock, and the chicks are raised by both parents. When the chicks are strong enough and their feathers are enough developed, they just jump from the nest and start flying (they don’t need to be taught). They will spend their first year of life in the air, without landing. Swift couples are together for life.
Love is in the air. Happy Valentine’s day.

On behalf of ASPETGA, we would like to share the good news: Looks like we are one step closer to having a dog beach in Santa Pola! On the 21st of December, the town council approved changes to their beach regulations to allow a dog friendly beach. It will located along Calas del Cuartel, a series of coves on beach road to Santa Pola, near the CIMAR marine science building. The changes were published in the Alicante province bulletin of state this week taking us one step closer to reality! The same paper also wrote about ASPETGA’s Christmas campaign to get more donations for the pet food bank. At the Christmas market in Santa Pola our generous neighbours donated the equivalent of over 300 kilos of food. People gave bags and cans of food and cash. We are still taking donations of pet food as well as other items such as kitty litter, toys, treats, beds. READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
If you happen to be chatting to a birder, either socially or out in the field, and you ask him about the best birds he's ever seen, he may at some point look wistfully into the distance and mumble something about a Bogey Bird. You might wonder what sort of bird this is, and rush home to look it up, but you will find no reference in your Bird Guide to a Bogey Bird – either here in Spain or back home in the UK - and you will think he has been pulling your leg. Well actually he hasn't. A Bogey Bird is in reality one of the commonest birds in the world, and can be any one of several hundred species. The point is, that your birding friend knows all about it, he can describe it to you in minute detail, he knows where they can be found, but – and this is the important bit – he's never actually seen one. Experienced birders will know what I mean. They always arrive at a hide five minutes after everyone else has had a nice close-up sighting, or worse still a friend will tell them “you should have stayed a bit longer, there was one here just after you left!”, and they grind their teeth in frustration and despair. I myself am not immune to the phenomenon of the Bogey Bird, I have several including the Hawfinch, which I am beginning to suspect only exists on the pages of Bird Guides, and until this November, the Wryneck. Actually, I'm telling a fib. I have had previous sightings of a Wryneck, but they have always been very fleeting or very distant, and I can never be sure that the indistinct brown shape was really one of these elusive birds or my mind playing wishful thinking games with me. But during November, I had my best-ever and prolonged sighting of one of these birds down in the Clot at the Marsh Hide, and I was able to take several good photos of it. It's a small bird, a little bigger than a Sparrow, and a member of the Woodpecker family. It is thought that there are one or two around in our area throughout the year, but the numbers probably increase during the winter with migrant birds from the north adding to the numbers. It is a very unobtrusive bird, mostly quiet but with a distinctive harsh “Quee-quee-quee-quee” call. Its strange name comes from the fact that it can turn its head through almost 180 degrees, and will shake and twist its neck quite violently during displays or when it is agitated. It won't be something you will see every time you visit the Clot, but you should be aware that just maybe, you might see one! The Spanish name for it is Torcecuello euroasiático, which means “Twist-neck” and its Latin name is Jynx torquilla, which is appropriate, because until last November, it was a Jinx to me – or to put it another way, a Bogey Bird! You can see more photos of wildlife in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.

FAITH THE THREE-LEGGED SPANISH PONY DIES, PROSTHESIS GIFTED TO ANOTHER AMPUTEE PONY IN FRANCE.
T
he first pony in Spain to be fitted with an artificial leg has passed away, five years after her mutilated front foreleg was amputated in a life-saving operation. Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding, who rescued the badly injured pony in 2010, said they made the heartbreaking decision to have Faith put down.
Faith had lived happily for years at the Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona, under the supervision of skilled Dutch vet Gasper Castelijins, who served Spain’s 2012 equestrian Olympic team. But last October, Gasper reported that Faith’s good front leg – previously weakened by a severe case of laminitis suffered before her rescue – had began to fail.“No expense was ever spared on Faith and she absolutely loved her prosthetic leg because it gave her freedom. The amputation was the right thing to do, it gave her a wonderful five years. She had companionship, mobility and lived pain-free in five-star accommodation,” Sue said. “But it’s all about knowing when to let go. When it gets to the stage that a disabled animal is struggling and you can’t make it better, it’s time to let go. It wasn’t a decision taken lightly but obviously no one was prepared to see Faith suffer.” Faith had been found in a dusty yard beside a Spanish farmhouse in 2010, her right front foreleg deeply wounded after being entangled for days in a rope used to tie her to a tree. She underwent months of intensive treatment at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, near Rojales in the Alicante province, but her mutilated foreleg was unable to be saved. In February, 2011, Faith underwent pioneering surgery at Equihealth Veterinarios in Barcelona, where two surgeons worked for five hours to sever her right foreleg 7.5cm below the knee. Faith was then fitted with a prosthetic leg specially made in the United States by Dwayne Mara of the Bayou Orthotic and Prosthetic Centre in New Orleans – the

same skilled prosthetist who made the artificial leg that in 2006 saved the life of a famous American pony named Molly, a casualty of Hurricane Katrina, who was later attacked by a dog and lost her leg. “We believe that every animal that comes to us, because of the pain and suffering they’ve endured, deserves a second chance at life,” Sue said of the decision to fight for Faith’s life. “We gave Faith a good five years, which she deserved. She had the best and she inspired so many people worldwide. Faith has changed all of us a little bit.” Faith was put to sleep on October 29, 2015. "Faith's death has been incredibly sad for us and we needed some time to privately come to terms with this loss before making the news public,” Sue said. “Faith was such a special little pony who touched so many lives and of course we wanted to keep everyone who loved her updated on her case. We would like to thank our supporters for understanding our decision to take a few weeks to privately grieve before publicly announcing Faith's death." Now Faith’s artificial leg is set to help another amputee pony in France. The prosthesis has been sent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Lyon, where veterinarian Michael Schramme is fitting it for a 10-year-old Shetland pony named Iris. “Iris had been diagnosed and treated for a chronic foot infection for several years by the time she came to see us in October of last year,” Michael said. “Our investigations showed she had a malignant tumour in the foot and that the only chance of saving her would be to amputate the limb above the tumour.” Iris’s leg was amputated on October 30 last year, but a second amputation had to be performed slightly higher up the limb on November 20 after the wound became infected.“Iris returned home for Christmas on December 20. During this time, we constructed a bandage splint from two pieces of PVC drainage pipe that we attached together as a splint to replace the missing part of the limb,” Michael said.He said the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s kind decision to donate Faith’s professionally made prostheses “will most certainly help” Iris regain her mobility. Said Sue: “We are so happy that Faith’s prosthetic legs are going to help another little pony and that she and Molly the Pony have inspired other surgeons to continue this work to help others out there.”
