Hi everybody,

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

In January the 5th we have parades for the Three Kings in every village or Town on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola it will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. I know in Torrevieja there is beautiful one, also in Diputación building in Alicante there is an exhibition of these. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus, is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of National Tourist Interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon, it will take place on Sunday 22nd at 10:30 a.m., If you have not seen yet, do please come and enjoy unique atmosphere, The day before, on Saturday afternoon you can also enjoy the fun race for children, we called Mini-Marathon but last year more than 1100 children took part in it. To finish I would like to mention that next month it will take place the almond blossom in la Seta Valley, covering villages like: Facheca, Famorca, Vall d’Ebo, Last year I spent a day out with my family and I was really impressed by the beauty of the blossom there. Bye-bye Friends. Hello Everyone, We hope you all enjoyed Christmas and New Year! As we start another year we have some great news regarding the Town Hall, the councillors will soon be holding surgery’s on Gran Alacant and when we have the rota, we will publish it ASAP. You might have also heard our very own Mayka is opening her own tapas bar in the Carabassi Centre very soon! Our best wishes to her in her new venture from all of us at the magazine. Just one more thing who was it that said that rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain, it didn’t in December!!! It’ s just a joke we know where the saying is from, no e-mails please. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: PARKING Hi Ged & Lou Would it be possible to ask Santa Pola Town Hall when and if they are planning to sort out the parking in Avde de Noruega, because as a resident living opposite the school car park I am horrified to see the chaos caused when the children are arriving and leaving the school? Despite more class rooms being added there appears to be no attempt to ease the traffic flow. After looking at the problem for a long time it is obvious that the car park needs to be enlarged back to the perimeter fence of the playground, or more, squared off, then bringing the traffic in from the top main road, and making them leave via the existing exit. Turning Avde de Norvega into a one way system at least for the times when the children are about. This will then make the parents use the car park, and not block the road with their abandoned vehicles. If the authorities were to monitor this at the correct times they would soon see that this is an accident waiting to happen, as my vehicle has been hit at least twice whilst parked outside my property. Yours Lyn & Don Lucas Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this matter, your proposal in order to redirect the traffic flow during the most crowed hours at school is being transferred to both the Urbanism Councillor and the Police Department, so as they can study its viability and its start up. Q: POST OFFICE Hi Ged and Lou, Please can you investigate the whereabouts of our post? We are on Altomar 1 and for the last few months our post has only come every 3-4 weeks which is really bad as we have important letters some with appointments and they arrive after the appointment date! We made enquiries locally and at our Administration Office and even they are having problems and are

really cross with the situation, especially when they pay to send special delivery letters and it doesn't happen. It appears there is only 1 Postman for Gran Alacant and he cannot cope. Also there is always a long queue at the little Post Office, as one person can only deal with one person and one enquiry at a time! No multitasking here. I do wonder where all our post is and Magazines, which are 2 months behind. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, Jan Wright Town Hall Answer: Well, this is a very hot issue. First of all, the Town Hall is aware about this problem, so the Employment Councillor has spoken to the Post Office and has written a letter to the Post Office Director in Alicante. In this letter, the Councillor, who once was a postman, explains all the problematic that people in Gran Alacant experience about their post. Thus, the Post Office Director has answered that it would be great if the Town Hall could provide a place where the Post Office could be moved into, so as all the services can be offered and, thus, more postmen can be available for Gran Alacant area. Now, our technicians are studying several buildings in order to locate the new post office, so as all the people in Gran Alacant can get their letters, magazines... just on time! Q: BINGO Is there a vendetta by police against bars

on Gran Alacant, running the very popular UK game of “Bingo”? What did come from this was a threat to take some of us to the police station for refusing to provide ID. What is the law is on the compulsory carrying of ID documents?

Town Hall Answer: There is not a “vendetta” by police against bars on Gran Alacant, but the law says that it is obligatory to carry on the ID card for all people in Spain, and to show it to the authorities if asked. If not, the policemen are able to take those people to police station and keep them for the night, being also able to impose a fine due to this.

Hi, I have noticed the trees ,put in at great cost,are slowly dying along the whole length of Avda de Noruega,even after all the rain recently.

Q: BAILE BUS Have Baile been told that they must use the new bus station in Santa Pola? Our readers may be aware that we have been dealing with the Baile bus company for many years. They run the local buses in our are and we always publish their timetable.

It would be great if at the next meeting you have with the council that this could be raised so it could be rectified before summer when they will all surely die, maybe Lou could take a few professional pictures to back it up.

Town Hall Answer: Of course Baile have been told about that, and they are well aware. Town Hall has talked to Baile several times, and, according to the regulations applicable to the bus station, all the bus companies are forced to stop right there. In case they do not stop at Bus Station, we ask all the people to come to the Town Hall (either in Santa Pola or in Gran Alacant Municipal Offices) and record those situations. Q: TREES ON AVENIDA NORUEGA On our return to Gran Alacant we were very sad to see that most of the mature trees that line Avenida Noruega are dead or dying. This is entirely due to the irrigation pipes being broken and badly damaged by recent repairs to the pavement. Do anybody care? Why aren't contractors who do these things not made to repair the damage they have caused? And is the council doing anything to save these once lovely trees?

The cause being that the watering system pipework is disconnected / vandalised along its length from the roundabout to the Masa office.

Having a nice tree lined entrance to lower Gran Alacant is not too much to ask when all the infrastructure is already there. Heres hoping Thanks Tony W. Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this matter, your proposals in order to solve the situation related to the trees are being transferred to both the Infrastructure Councillor and the Environment Engineering Department, so as they can study the better solution to solve this issue. Q: BENCHES Hi Lou & Ged, this is the last time I put in this request (5 years now). The 2 steepest hills ...the hill up to the old maxcoop from the college roundabout and the cardiac hill from the beach do not have any seats to rest our weary legs, yet other pathways have ample seats...e.g. the pathway at the side of the clot walking from the beach towards the carrabasi bars has 14 seats on a flat road ! BARRY’S BITS (of news) This magazine goes into its 13th year this month and in that time has had the pleasure in reporting on so many projects for the urbanisation instigated by the Santa Pola Town Hall and by local investment. Much of which has been paid for by grants from the EU which the Town Hall actively sought after. Just some of the projects were, the school, the sports centre, the park, the revamp of the road from the post office roundabout to the hill to the beach, a post office which meant we did not have to travel to Santa Pola to carry out our postal tasks, the roundabout by the post office, the landscaped roundabout with the fountain, the Church, the landscaping of the land in front of the Clot de Galvany, the purpose built site for the weekly market, and many more smaller projects. You may agree or not agree with projects that took place on GA, but at least things were always improving. In the last 18 months there has been a complete change of government and we are looking forward to all the new upcoming projects and are very happy to work with the Town hall during 2017 on resolving local issues and reporting on the latest developments. If its building work, what is to be built there? Town Hall Answer: After consulting with the Infrastructure Department, there is no information about a new building to be built in that area. Therefore, it must be a tidy up of the zone. DOG DIRT Will the Town Hall send a representative to the entrance of “The Clot de Galvany” to see the disgusting amount of dog dirt. It is simply appalling. Town Hall Answer: First of all, Clot de Galvany is a mixed property between both Santa Pola and Elche Town Halls, so this problem cannot be solved just by one of them. However, there is no more actions which the Town Hall can take in order to preserve the

cleaning of the area, other than imposing fees and fines to the people who cause that this place gets dirtier. This is a lack of civism and politeness. GRAN ALACANT SECOND SCHOOL After reviewing the regional budgets of 2017, wit has been verified that there is no forecast for a second school on Gran Alacant. This was after the announcement by the government team, that had confirmed the school of Gran Alacant as 'priority one' and that it would begin its construction in 2017. They do not know the reasons and are waiting for explanations. Can the Town Hall enlighten us? Town Hall Answer: The information that you have is not true. In fact, there is an application in regional budgets for 2017 which involves the constructions of new schools and the second school in Gran Alacant is provided there. The beginning of the construction is meant to be in the first six months of 2017, as the Government Team stated back in January 2016. BEWARE!!! Beware, just had this email from a friend. Had a couple of guys round tonight trying to sell security systems. They mentioned the warning about recent robberies just to wind up us!!! We said we already had a system but they were a bit pushy. Not sure what company they were from, but they knew about the recent robberies. Just had the second lot of security experts swinging on the doorbell. MASA OFFICE Familiar landmark finally moved!!!

ABANDONED CARS There some to be a number of cars left abandoned on GA. (Pictures of a few). Please send us pictures if you know of any more. ELECTRICITY Has your electricity supply tripped out.? Who do you call? Since the electric via Iberdrola has now gone to smart metres, if your supply cuts out, you have to have the trip reset in your community electricity box, not in your house as was the case. If your supply is constantly tripping out and you need the power upgraded, again you cannot do this in the supply within your house, but you need it upgraded at the supply to the community boxes. Gary the electrician is authorised to carry this out for you. His advert is always in this magazine, so well worth cutting it out and keeping it handy for when you may need it. Todas las fotos se pueden ver en la Información redactada en Ingles APARCAMIENTO Seria posible preguntar al ayuntamiento de Santa Pola cuando y si planean arreglar el aparcamiento en Avda/ Noruega? porque como residente que vive frente al aparcamiento del colegio me horroriza ver el caos que se produce cuando los ninos llegan y salen del colegio. Pese ha que se han añadido mas aulas, no parece haber ningun intento de aliviar el flujo de trafico. Despues de ver el problema durante mucho tiempo es obvio que el aparcamiento debe ser ampliado hacia la valla del patio de recreo, o mas cuadrado, que traigan el trafico desde la carretera principal y hacer que salgan via la salida existente. Conviertiendo Avda/ Noruega en un sistema unidireccional por lo menos a las horas que los ninos estan a punto de salir o entrar. Esto hara que los padres usen el aparcamiento y no bloqueen el camino con sus vehiculos abandonados. Si las autoridades supervisaran esto en los momentos correctos verian pronto que esto es un accidente que espera suceder, pues mi vehiculo ha sido golpeado por lo menos dos veces mientras estaba aparcado fuera de casa. Parece ser que hay solo 1 cartero para Gran Alacant y el no puede hacer frente a todo. Tambien hay siempre una cola enorme en la pequeña oficina de correos, pues una persona no puede con todo!! No puede atender a dos al mismo tiempo, me pregunto donde esta nuestro correo y las revistas de hace 2 meses. En primer lugar, el ayuntamiento es consciente de este problema por lo que el consejero de empleo ha hablado con la oficina de correos y ha enviado una carta al director de la oficina de correos en Alicante. En esta carta, el concejal que fue cartero, explica las problematicas sobre el correo al que tienen que hacer frente las gentes de Gran Alacant. Por lo tanto el director de la oficina de correos ha respondido que seria genial si el ayuntamiento proporcionara un lugar donde la oficina de correos pudiera ser trasladada, asi se podrian ofrecer todos los servcios y aumentar el numero

Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: No hay una vendetta de la policia contra los bares de Gran Alacant, pero la ley dice que es obligatorio llevar el carnet de identidad o tarjeta identificativa para todas las personas en Espana,y mostrarlo si se le es requerido , en caso contrario la policia puede llevarlos a comisaria y retenerlos 24 horas, pudiendo tambien imponer una multa por ello. BAILE BUS Le han comunicado a la compania de autobuses Baile que debe utilizar la nueva estacion de Santa Pola? Por que no la utiliza? Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: Por supuesto Baile ha sido informada y son muy conscientes. El ayuntamiento ha hablado con Baile varias veces y de acuerdo con las regulaciones vigentes a la estacion de autobuses todas las empresas de autobuses se ven obligadas a parar justo alli. En caso de que no se detengan en la estacion de autobuses, pedimos a todas las personas que vayan al ayuntamiento( ya sea en Santa Pola o en las oficinas municipales de Gran Alacant) y lo registren. ARBOLES EN LA AVENIDA NORUEGA A nuestro regreso a Gran Alacant estabamos muy tristes de ver que la mayoria de los arboles de la Avda Noruega estan muertos o muriendo. Esto se debe a que las tuberias de riego estan rotas y danadas por las

ultimas reparaciones que se hicieron en el pavimento. Alguien se preocupa? porque no todos los contratistas reparan lo que han danado? y el ayuntamiento esta haciendo algo para salvar a estos hermosos arboles? A medida que los arboles se mueren se revela aun mas el desastre y la devastacion que los constructores estan inflingiendo en el paisaje por todos los escombros que dejan alli, residuos de hormigon , tuberias de plastico y bolsas etc por que nadie hace nada sobre esto? el ayuntamiento? no conozco ningun otro pais europeo que se tolere esto Atentamente Myrna Noble Hola, he notado que los arboles, colocados a lo largo de la avda, se estan muriendo lentamente, incluso despues de toda la lluvia renciente. La causa es que la tuberia del sistema de riego esta desconectada/ vandalizada a lo largo de la avda desde la rotonda hasta la oficina de masa. Seria genial que en la proxima reunion que tenga con el consejo pudiera ser rectificada antes del verano, cuando seguramente todos moririan, Lou podria tomar algunas fotos profesionales para respaldarlo. Tener una bonita entrada llena de arboles para bajar a Gran Alacant no es demasiado pedir cuando toda la infraestructura esta ahi. Aqui esperando Gracias Tony W. BANCOS Hola Lou y Ged, esta es la ultima vez que pongo esta solicitud (desde hace 5 anos) Las 2 colinas mas empinadas...la colina hasta el viejo Maxcoop de la rotonda y la colina cardiaca de la playa no tienen bancos para descansar nuestras piernas cansadas, sin embargo otras aceras tienen amplios bancos ... el paseo en el Clot del Galvany caminando de la playa hacia los bares tiene 14 bancos"en una calle llana! Asi que un ultimo intento puede por favor ayudarnos , los que han subido las colinas los ultimos 12 aĂąos junto con muchas familias llevando carritos de playa, etc hasta la playa?. Simplemente 2 bancos en cada colina no supone mucho. Atentamente, Ian e Irene Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: En relacion a este asunto su propuesta para resolver la situacion relacionada con la falta de bancos, se transfiere al concejal de infraestructuras para que pueda estudiar la mejor solucion. LAS NOTICIAS DE BARRY Esta revista entra en su 13 aĂąo este mes y durante este tiempo ha tenido el placer de informar sobre projectos para la urbanizacion llevados a cabo por el Ayuntamiento de Santa Pola y de la inversion local. Muchos de los cuales han sido pagados por subvenciones de la UE que el ayuntamiento buscaba activamente. Solo algunos de los proyectos fueron el colegio, el centro deportivo, el parque, la renovacion de la oficina de correos , lo que significo que no tuvimos que viajar a Santa Pola para llevar a cabo nuestras tareas postales, la rotonda de la oficina de correos, la iglesia, el paisajismo en el Clot del Galvany, la reubicacion del mercadillo semanal y muchos otros pequeĂąos proyectos. Usted puede estar de acuerdo o no con los proyectos que se han llevado a cabo en GA, pero al menos las cosas van mejorando. En los ultimos 18 meses ha habido un completo cambio de gobierno, y esperamos con interes todos losproximos nuevos proyectos ,y estamos muy contentos de trabajar con el ayuntamiento el proximo 2017 para resolver los

problemas locales e informar sobre como se desarrollan. Si usted tiene cualquier comentario o sugerencia por favor remitanoslo, en la revista en primera pagina tiene todos los detalles de nuestro contacto. Accidente Carretera Despues de ver las secuelas de otro accidente de trafico en la N332 en la inflexion a Santa Pola Hay alguna medida que el Ayuntamiento pueda recomendar para poder evitar mas lesiones? Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: En primer lugar, animamos a todas las personas a seguir todas las normas de seguridad relacionadas con el trafico, son necesarias, la mayoria de las veces para evitar un accidente de coche o incluso situaciones peores. El ayuntamiento ha pedido una reunion con el ministerio en la que podamos explicar los riesgos que la gente se ve obligada al conducir por la N332, para que se preocupen de este tema y hagan las obras adecuadas para que el nivel de seguridad en esa carretera sea el adecuado. TERRENO SIN USAR EN EL CENTRO COMERCIAL DE GA Vemos que se ha despejado la superficie de suelo que no se utiliza en el centro comercial de Gran Alacant. Es solo limpieza, o es el comienzo de una obra? Si es trabajo de construccion, que es lo que se va a construir? Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: Despues de consultar con el departamento de infraestructura, no hay informacion sobre la construccion de un nuevo edificio en esa zona. Por lo que debe ser una limpieza de la zona. SUCIEDAD DE PERRO El ayuntamiento puede enviar un representante a la entrada del Clot del Galvany para ver la asquerosa cantidad de suciedad de perro. Es simplemente asqueroso. Respuesta del Ayuntamiento: En primer lugar el Clot del Galvany es una propiedad mixta entre los ayuntamientos

de Santa Pola y Elche, por lo que el problema no puede ser resuelto solo por uno de ellos. COLEGIO EN GRAN ALACANT Despues de revisar los presupuestos regionales del 2017, se ha verificado que no hay presupuesto para un segundo colegio en Gran Alacant, eso fue despues del anuncio del equipo de gobierno, que habia confirmado el colegio de Gran Alacant como "prioridad uno"! y que comenzaria su construccion en 2017 No saben las razones y esperan explicaciones. Puede el ayuntamiento iluminarnos?

On the weekend of 19th/20th November we held an annual competition in the Australian Pairs format. We had sixteen teams involved with each playing six games, three games per day, of eight ends. There were several teams in with a chance of winning up to the Sunday afternoon. The overall winners, eventually by a considerable margin, were Pauline and Chris Merry. Following the final game the winners were presented with the trophy by Club Chairman, Chris Harding. Everyone enjoyed a great weekend and Chris thanked all those who had taken part. He also thanked Liz and Denise who had worked hard in the background to ensure that everything went smoothly.

LADIES VS MEN COMPETITION Saturday December 10th We held our annual Ladies v Men competition. The morning started with a spider competition which was won by Chris Merry. After a mornings bowling which was played in good humour and in lovely sunshine, the ladies won. But when the shots where counted the men were the overall winners. So the trophy was presented to the men. The morning was finished off with a enjoyable buffet by the Rincon.

When we moved out of the UK to come to live in Spain 14 years ago, one of the biggest concerns was “what happens if we get ill?” We hope that this article will help when it is your turn to use the system. We originally went for a private health scheme although we had Spanish Healthcare due to our paying monthly social payments via working with our own magazine business The Gran Alacant Advertiser. After, over a period of time, visiting friends who were in hospital, we saw that the social healthcare was very good. When we retired last year we felt comfortable to revert to the Spanish system. We thought that we would like to tell of our experience at the Elche Social Hospital. Earlier in 2016 Sandra went to the doctor about her very bad knees. You can get to see the doctor within a couple of days. An appointment was then booked to see the consultant on May 25th. He then arranged for blood tests, scans, and xrays on 15th June. 30th June we saw the anesthetist and then had to wait for a phone call for a date for the operation to take place. Early November the telephone rang to tell us to come to the hospital on 9th November to do a blood test in case Sandra needed a blood transfusion. The next day 10th November Sandra had to be at the hospital at 11am for the operation to take place later that day. We arrived at 11am and booked in at the front desk, where we were told which floor to report to. The nurse at the desk weighed Sandra and measured her height before taking her to the two bed room. All rooms have two beds. The various preparations took place and Sandra was wheeled to theatre at around 5-30pm. I was then asked to leave at the theatre entrance and go to the relatives waiting

room where everyone waited whilst their friends, family etc were in surgery. I waited there until Sandra’s name was announced over the tannoy. I then had to go to the first floor and meet up with the surgeon as Sandra was wheeled out for a couple of hours in the recovery room. The surgeon explained to me all that had taken place and what her rehabilitation would be. During surgery Sandra just had a local epidural injection so heard the hammer, saw, drill etc. But with the sedation, was not too bothered by it. All rooms are for two patients who share the one bathroom. The nurses were brilliant. I stayed with Sandra 24/7 which means I could do a few things to help out rather than having to involve the nursing staff. This is common in the hospital and the nurses accept that you are there full time, being a help to them, also sleeping there all night. It means that mundane bits and pieces could be made by me, there fore meaning the nurses did not have to continually be called to help. There are hundreds of rubber gloves in boxes in the corridors. They put a pair of gloves on before they enter a room, take them off and dump then when they leave, and put on new again when they come into the room again. There are four meals per day. A couple are biscuits coffee butter and marmalade. The meals have plenty of quantity so you can usually pick out enough that you like, to keep you going.Linen and personal clothes were changed and replaced daily. A constant drip of drugs, including painkillers were afforded to Sandra and were keeping her slightly sedated, keeping her very tired and mostly asleep. After surgery late Thursday, Sandra went for an xray 8,30am Friday. Was only away for ten minutes. Then she was surrounded by nurses for a wash and the surgeons registrar bent and moved the knee. Then, her first food since Wednesday evening, breakfast. Butter, jam, biscuits and coffee

and then lunch at 1pm lentil soup, and panga fish. 2.30pm Sandraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (heart throb ) surgeon arrived to again bend the knee and lifted her leg and told her that tomorrow (Saturday) after 12 noon she could get out of bed, weight bearing and onto crutchers. 4-15pm, more food biscuits and a slice of ham. Bags of drugs were continually dripping into her and she was very tired, sleeping for most of the time. 8pm Friday, yet another meal, the fourth of the day. Saturday pm Sandra was on her feet and walking to the toilet on crutchers and had the big bandage cut off and replaced by a very fetching white (sexy?) stocking. Much lighter and easier for walking with. At 11pm Saturday the doctor came in and told us that Sandra would be going home tomorrow (Sunday). Sunday 8pm a blood test and temperature taken. 9am nurses arrived for washing and then breakfast of croissants and coffee. Then the bad news, blood levels were too low to go home, so a blood transfusion would be needed and home, now, on Monday. Two packs of blood did their job on Sun day, and Monday morning another blood test, with fingers crossed. At 1pm the news that the bloods were ok. So a visit from a doctor who tested that they knee worked ok, which it did , and Sandra was discharged. We have steps up to our house which were negotiated ok and Sandra even managed to get up our stairs to bed. Success. On the Thursday we had an appointment back at the hospital to see the nurse, who put a new dressing on the knee. The wound was very good, nice and dry clean. Over a weekend Sandra was having stomach pains so we went to our doctor on Monday morning, without an appointment, but the doctor saw her. It seemed that one of the tablets was the cause and so it was replaced with a different tablet.

All was well for a couple of days until going to bed during the week, the pains returned. So bad that we went at 3am to the emergency department back at Elche hospital. We arrived at reception where we had to produce our SIP card. You can obtain this card if you comply to the remit in Spain for free healthcare. If not, you have to pay for private healthcare. You do not get automatic free service. We waited in reception for Sandraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name to be called, also telling her which colour line on the floor which she had to follow, to take her to the correct cubicle. The proceeded to check, bloods, blood pressure, temperature and linked her to a drip to help with her pain. She was then taken for an xray to her stomach. The result was that it was yet another of the prescribed medication that was causing the problem. We left home at 3am and got back home at 7am. Then we made an appointment for two days time, with our doctor, to check all is well and to get the results of the xray.......job done.... The 24th of the month saw our 2nd appointment at the hospital to check and redo the dressing. About a week later an appointment for the same procedure. December 7th saw the fourth weekly visit where the surgeon took a look at the knee and the nurse take the staples out. The surgeon then checked the knee movement and asked for any questions. He was very pleased with the progress and was somewhat surprised when Sandra said she only took pain killers for two weeks and had been off them for a fortnight. A final appointment was made for February 8th for an xray and appointment with the surgeon. We hope this article has eased any fears you may have if you have to go to the local hospital. Chatter CRIMEWATCH GA Coming from a large city on the south coast of England, with a large multicultural influence; notorious council estates on the periphery and a violent act committed every hour, throughout the city, I was unsure about what to expect, when I moved to Spain. Like most people, when they decide to move abroad, they have expectations and a vision, of what they assume life, living on the Costa Blanca, will be like. My assumptions could not have been so completely wrong. Moving here was an eye opener; my suppositions were very soon a distant memory! Gran Alacant is a large urbanization, and as such, will suffer from criminal activity, on occasion. Up until this point, I had not experienced or witnessed any crime or problem that could be construed as deviant. During the summer, I was made aware of tourists and residents, having money pick pocketed in the GA Centro Commercial. Whilst lunching at the Belfry with fiends, I was approached by a lady concerned about the level of crime in this area. She herself had become a victim of theft, whilst parking her car, on a busy Saturday afternoon. She brought this crime to the attention of the local Guardia, who were dealing with the ramifications, when I spoke to her. It seems, that people were coming into Gran Alacant, from outside the urbanization, people not known to the Police, taking advantage of the increase in numbers, using the opportunity to lift purses and wallets from the local populace. This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an unusual occurrence in tourist areas, up and down the Costa Blanca. Unsavoury characters will always take

advantage of lucrative situations. The main trouble is, the trusting nature of tourists. When they arrive here on holiday, they leave all sense of reality at home; the truth is, stealing, taking from others, robbery and burglary are commonplace where ever you are, especially on holiday. A vacation is a time when we relax in all matters, we let down our guard and disagreeable people, can take advantage of that. With the summer season at an end and winter in full flow, Gran Alacant was far quieter, than I was used too. Restaurants and bars had closed for the winter and most tourists had gone home. At this time of year money is tight, people are fewer and jobs more scarce, than they already are. I had been told about a robbery that had taken place, not far from where I was living. A friend had a bag stolen from their house in the early hours of the morning. Someone had forced the front window and reached through, taking her handbag, sitting on the dining table. Other neighbours living in the same road, had noticed a stranger, but like most of us, passed it by. This is not the only theft, that has happened; I myself have had items removed from my front terrace. These were objects of very little value, but the fact they were left in the garden, attracted the wrong type of person; a chancer who was just out to make a quick Euro, while the rest of us have to work. Other neighbours have also approached me, with similar stories. Items stolen from their terraces, by people unknown. Petty crime exists everywhere; Gran Alacant is no exception. I had a message from one of my neighbours, warning me that there was a conman about in the area; wanting me to highlight the danger in this months G A Advertiser. Her tenants had been

targeted by a man, pretending to be a local resident, locked out of their house. They needed 37€ to get a locksmith out. All very plausible, the sort of thing that happens all the time. The big problem here, is the transient nature of the local community. As a seasonal holiday resort, people do come and go all the time. Unless, like me, you live here all year round, which most people do not, you don’t necessarily know the people next door, let alone down the road; conmen and women are well aware of this fact and prey on others lack of knowledge. As good people, new to the area, they promptly gave the man in question 50€, no questions asked. To be honest, had I been in their position, witness to his distress, I may well have handed over money as well. Nobody knows, how they would react; your gut reaction is important; if you believe something isn’t quite how it should be, it probably isn’t. As a blogger, I highlighted this phenomenon as soon as it happened in my blog, Spanish Views. The information I provided was picked up by a local resident, who I will call Mike; he approached me at Zest on a Saturday afternoon. Mike was angry; He had been looking for the guy involved and wanted me to do all I could, to help catch this thief and conman. He was kind enough to handover a lot of material, he had already collected and, like me, feels sure this man will be caught eventually. From the information Mike provided, including number plates, a description and some research he had already done, it is clear the gentleman in question probably lives outside the area. His numberplate, pointed to a location in Southern Germany. All the evidence I have, has been handed over. I urge anyone, who may have been a victim, to please contact the local Guardia. The residents of Gran Alacant, both expats and otherwise, have shown me

the importance of working together, and helping each other out in times of need. They are a great source of information and are well versed in the spirit of neighbourliness; the advice given by everyone who lives here is invaluable. When I look back at my experience of crime in the UK, it was rare that anyone would be there, giving an opinion, helping deal with the aftermath or doing what they could to prevent future transgression. This community, like many others, both here and abroad, have an agenda; They are a self organised and regulated group of people, with a common cause; working to alleviate problems and solve issues important to everyone, within Gran Alacant. At difficult junctures, I have seen citizenry at work, it is wonderful to observe! There are of course, measures you can do now, to help prevent crime, here in Gran Alacant. I keep my gate locked at all times. This certainly helps to deter potential theft. Until recently, I never even thought about securing my terrace, but now, I do it as a matter of course, as we all should. The shutters at the front of each persons home, should also be used for their intended purpose. Yes they are there to keep out the hot summer sun, but they are also there as a security measure. The windows in homes on this urbanization, are only single glazed, so extra care should be taken, to close them at night. Try not to leave anything of value, outside your home. This will only encourage thieves and opportunists to return to your house, and others in your area, at a more convenient time. The biggest crime prevention measures, we can take as a community, is by staying vigilant . If you do see anything suspicious, report it and let your neighbours know. Awareness of any problem activity, does an awful lot to stop future crimes and anti social behaviour. Never underestimate ‘People Power’.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 6 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.

This month we wanted to talk about La Mata and Torrevieja Lagunas and vineyards which are located about 40 minutes South of Gran Alacant along the N332. “El parquet Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja” is it´s official name and it covers a total area of 3,700 hectares. We have visited this Natural Park a few times with friends and it really is a beautiful setting for a nice walk or bike ride with plenty of places to stop and admire the views of the two lakes or enjoy a picnic. The two lakes are connected via a canal and are artificially linked to the sea. They

are used in the salt production process with the La Mata Laguna acting as a heating pool and the salt itself is harvested from the Torrevieja laguna. In 1989 these lagunas were given the ZEPA (zonas de especial protección para las aves) status, this zone is designed to protect the birds from any development or building in their environment. To help to preserve this area of natural beauty and protect the wildlife, birds, flaura and fauna most of the parkland is not accessible but there are two walking and one cycling route which you can enjoy. The visitor centre, which is open from 0930 – 1400 Mon – Fri and 0900 – 1300 on Saturdays has all of the information you need about the ecosystems and the flora and fauna that can be found in this natural area. You will also find the start of the two walks and one cycle route here.

The 1.4km “Ruta del Vino” walking route takes approximately 40 minutes and is a nice walk to enjoy the different views as you go past the La Mata Laguna and through the vineyards.

With the cold days of winter and after big meals during Christmas time, there is nothing better than traditional Spanish lentils. But this time not so traditional as normal. Spanish lentils have chorizo and bacon, so to make them a little bit lighter we are going to use only veggies. Let’s start!

Spanish Lentils

Ingredients 250 gr dry lentils 100 gr green pepper 80 gr onion 70 gr leek 100 gr carrot 250 gr potaoes 50 gr natural tomatoes 6 tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove 1/2 tablespoon paprika bay leaf and salt vegetable stock

Let’s Start! Cut all vegies into small pieces. Add 3 tablespoons of oil to the casserole pot and heat. Add all the vegetables except for the tomato and the potatoes and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the tomato and cook for 3 minutes. Add the lentils, bay leaf and potatoes. Cook for 2 minutes and then add cold water to cover the lentils, salt, vegetable stock cube and cook covered for 15 minutes in a pot express or 50 minutes in a tradicional pot. When cooked, heat a table spoon of olive oil in a frypan. Add the garlic cut into slices and fry until the garlic is golden in colour. Then add the paprika, take off the heat and keep stirring for few minutes. Then add the galric mixed with paprika into the casserole pot. Let it cook for another 5 minutes. Serve hot!

DIET FOR HEALTHY TEETH At this time of year we all like to make a fresh start with some healthy eating, so I thought I would discuss which foods are best to help maintain healthy teeth. Decay is caused by acids that are formed when the bacteria in plaque come into contact with sugar in food; so any foods high in sugar or naturally acidic should be kept to a minimum. Biscuits, cakes, sweets and also acidic and sweet drinks such as cola and energy drinks are among the worst culprits. There are however plenty of foods which actually help fight off decay: Cheese raises the pH in our mouths and lowers the risk of tooth decay. It is thought that the chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva in the mouth. Cheese also contains calcium and protein, nutrients that strengthen tooth enamel. Yogurt (particularly a plain variety with no added sugar) is high in calcium and protein, which makes it a good pick for the strength and health of your teeth. Leafy greens are full of vitamins and minerals while being low in calories.

Leafy greens such as kale and spinach also promote oral health. They're high in calcium, which builds your teeth's enamel. Fruits, such as apples, might be sweet, but they're also high in fibre and water. The action of eating an apple produces saliva in your mouth, which rinses away bacteria and food particles. The fibrous texture of the fruit also stimulates the gums. Carrots, like apples, are crunchy and full of fibre. Eating a handful of raw carrots at the end of the meal increases saliva production in your mouth, which reduces your risk of cavities. Celery acts a bit like a toothbrush, scraping food particles and bacteria away from your teeth. It's also a good source of vitamins A and C, two antioxidants that give the health of your gums a boost. Eating celery with cream cheese makes it tastier and also adds calcium. Almonds are great for your teeth because they are a good source of calcium and protein while being low in sugar. While it is very difficult to avoid sugary food altogether, cutting down the amount you eat by substituting some of the above snacks will be beneficial to both your oral and general health.

ell with the arrival of the new year I can safely say that I am most definitely ready to turn over a new leaf, after spending a lovely but hectic Christmas with my family feasting on mountains of glorious food, it is now time to seize January as the perfect opportunity to detox the body and mind. Now most of us after the festive season have great intentions of making and sticking with New Year’s resolutions with ½ of adults promising ourselves every year a “New year, new me” however only less than 10% of us actually manage to keep them promises for more than a few months. Over the next few months we will be discussing different topics and aspects of how to become not only healthier and happier but also to be more conscious and mindful...oh and if we lose a few pounds along the way that’s just another added cheeky little bonus. Like I mentioned earlier I can’t imagine I was the sole person over the Christmas period that maybe have overindulged and is now feeling rather tired, sluggish, heavy and bloated, not only that but the winter blues are going to be kicking in anytime now and that normally means for a lot of us coming down with a nasty cold or even the flu. The common cold is among the top leading causes of doctor’s visits and missing time off from work so eating for immunity to beat the sniffles is key in decreasing the chances of becoming sick, especially in winter. GASP THEATRE GROUP

A good time was had by all at GASP's latest production on 26th and 27th November in the Salon des Actos, Santara Life Resort.

The first half of the evening took the form of 3 short "Victorian" melodramas: "The

Drunkard's Dilemma", "The Wages of Sin" and "Maria Marten", all happily over-acted

in true melodramatic fashion, with lots of audience participation by way of boos, hisses and gasps, especially during "Maria Marten" , when normally shy and retiring Tony Skinner egged them on. In the second half the company took a satirical look at Brexit,

eavesdropping on a Ministerial meeting, hearing a Scots clergyman's nightmare while

pondering his next sermon, and sympathising with a lady in a cafe, who only wanted an English breakfast. The evening finished with a "News at Ten", complete with rather dim Weathergirl.

As always a donation will be made from ticket sales to Cruz Roja in Santa Pola. This has been scheduled for Wednesday 14th December.

good hearted people usually make donations which can be really important, so we should not trust those shelters in which “every animal is accepted” despite they have a limited number of cages… Two plus two never equals five, even for shelters…

ou may know about the case that happened in Torremolinos, where a woman owning an animal shelter killed over 2.000 animals just to grab the money that was supposed to be destined to pay veterinary services at her centre. She´s being taken to court for her infringements and the trial started this week. She didn´t want to pay more veterinarians to take care of the animals, so she euthanized those animals which became too ill to continue living, and she did it without any kind of professional qualification. At the beginning she just killed agonizing animals, but as time went by, she killed almost every animal sent to the shelter to avoid taking care of them. This case was reported to the competent authorities thanks to a veterinarian who was working at this shelter. He filmed the woman euthanizing an animal and showed the video to the police. The SEPRONA (Guardia Civil environmental unit) came to see if the information was true and realised that were animal corpses in the refrigerators. The case was reported to the police and the woman was arrested. This isn´t the only case reported; there are so many others. The people who take animals to shelters must know about these possibilities: a shelter may be a real bargain in the wrong hands, since authorities and

Shelter must have a transparent management because there are so many charitable organisations that do this. In other cases the animal abuse isn´t that obvious, but it´s also terrible. In other cases, the people don´t know what to do with an animal found at the street and give them to the veterinarian clinics. In case you know about a case of animal abuse you can report it with a special line established due to the case that happened in Torremolinos. In many cases the animal abuse reports end in nothing because the organisations dedicated to investigate this cases of abuse don´t investigate too much. If you really want to stop an animal abuse case you must report it to the PACMA (the animalist party). To report, you can go to their website and follow the steps according to the kind of abuse you want to stop. You can also get some information about the different kinds of abuse and law consequences. Animal abuse is terrible and there are so many cases like that shelter in Torremolinos, if you know about one, please help to stop it. Lobo is a stunning 5 year old pure German Shepherd, he is sadly up for adoption as the other dog in the house isn't getting along with him. He is good with children and would be suited to living with a female dog rather than another dominant male dog

Pontus is 1 year old Spanish sheep herding dog. He likes to run and retrieve balls, which are his favourite toy. He also loves the water sand beach walks. He is very good around children and when necessary is very protective by barking to create alarm. He is good around cats and with female dogs but does not like to be too close to other intact male dogs

Tino and Jack have been adopted from our last edition.

Sunny is a 7 month old pup and looks a little like a Beagle cross. She is happy to be near all people including children. Sunny has been used to living outside on a farm with another dog but will very soon adapt to sleeping at night in a house with a new owner. She is vaccinated and with microchip.

Sally is just 8 months. In her short life she has been discarded by the people she trusted, ending up on the streets being bullied by the feral cats. Sally is not a street cat. After a few traumatized weeks, and in the pouring rain when the other cats where under cover, she came to us and walked immediately into the cat box next. Now over her ordeal she purrs as soon as she gets onto a lap and will make a great house cat and pet companion. Sally has been blood tested, all negative, also vaccinated and sterilised.

The K9 Club is a Registered Animal Welfare Organisation operating within the Alicante Province Sally (Fox Terrier Cross) This quiet, friendly and affectionate girl found roaming scared and hungry is in desperate need of some quality TLC and a comfortable home. Louie - Spanish Mastiff This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

Sally walks well on a lead and is good with people and other dogs. She was brought to K9 by a lovely spanish lady and her daughter who took her in initially, but unfortunately could not afford to keep her due to her commitments to 3 other rescue dogs she has adopted. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

The good news from the Clot towards the end of 2016 was that the horrendously overgrown area known by some as the Scrape was finally cleared of the dense reedbed. This shallow wetland area complements the deeper main pool giving species which prefer less water depth a chance to thrive, but it does need constant maintenance, and this clearance is probably two years overdue. It also gave a chance for observers to see some of the less well-known birds of the area, and my photo shows a group of three Stone Curlews at the Scrape, a species which is regular in the Clot but difficult to see under normal circumstances. This slightly peculiar bird was once known as the Thick-kneed Bustard – early British ornithologists decided it was part of the Bustard family (wrong) and that it had Thick Knees (well, almost); then they realised it wasn’t a Bustard, and because its call sounded a bit like a Curlew, and it lived in stony areas, renamed it the Stone Curlew (wrong again). Actually it belongs to the Plover family, and is known in Spanish as the Alcaraván común. It is mainly a nocturnal bird, which is why their eyes are large and almost owl-like, and if seen during the day they will usually be motionless, relying on their plumage to camouflage themselves from prying eyes. They are usually found in the quieter parts of the Clot with little vegetation, although

I have also seen them at the main pool, and occasionally you may be lucky enough to see one in flight – a crow-sized buff bird with striking black and white wing markings is likely to be one of these. However, if you are feeling adventurous and fancy a stroll through the Clot at night, the hairs on the back of your head might be subjected to some exercise if you hear this bird calling – it has a somewhat unearthly sound which will put you in mind of spooks and spirits, and you will understand how some of the taller stories about ghostly wailings have come about. Apart from giving you a dose of the willies, the Stone Curlew is quite an inoffensive bird, even its somewhat stern expression belies its peaceful lifestyle which mainly involves picking around on dry areas for insects and worms. They are rare summer visitors to the UK and confined to a very few locations, but here in Spain they are fairly common throughout the year where there is suitable open and dry habitat. In the Clot, maybe six or seven pairs will nest this coming summer. I was very lucky to get this photo of the three birds at the Scrape, as it is a very shy bird and will scuttle away if it knows you’re around; perhaps it’s too embarrassed at always being called a Curlew when it isn’t one at all.
