We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ...

Hi everybody,

In January the 5th we have parades for the Three Kings in every village or Town on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola it will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy.

I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. I know in Torrevieja there is another beautiful one, also in Diputación building in Alicante. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus, is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of National Tourist Interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon, it will take place on Sunday 23rd at 10:30 a.m., If you have not seen yet, do please come and enjoy unique atmosphere, The day before, on Saturday afternoon you can also enjoy the fun race for children, we called Mini-Marathon but last year more than 1100 children took part in it.

Bye-bye my friends ... until next month.

DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS BUT NO WEBSITE ? NO WORRIES ... We have teamed up with BlueMoon Solutions who have for many years been advertising and writing articles for us. Give our magazine a call and we can put you onto a SPECIAL PRICE through us, for Richard to design you a website.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, and answers to your questions from Councillor of Citizen Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Road Signs: Following on from previous emails regarding the road signs on GA, it appears that the Town Hall have not been able to come up with a solution to the problem of the signs swinging around in the wind. It shouldn’t take three months for a decision to be made on such a simple thing. Once the job is done then the council can move on to more important things.Thank you, Penny Reply from Town hall: Regarding this issue, the police officer in charge of road signs has spoken to the Ministry in order to fix this problem, because all the issues related to traffic and road sings are within the Ministry, not the Town Hall. But despite this situation, we have talked to the police officer again so he bring forward this procedure as soon as possible. Rubbish on Calle Creta: Hello, we live in Calle creta and I’m going to send you some photos of our street, it is filthy, the council never come to clean it. We have a massive boat shipping container abandoned in the road, the pavements are full of dog excrements, there is rubbish strewn all over the road, overgrown plants and weeds. It is disgraceful that we are paying our council taxes for a service that we are not

4

receiving. Please could you speak to the council and find out their “excuses” as to why this road is so disgusting. Thank you, Ruben

has been done to clear any of the rubbish. Some was cleared by the wind, that’s about it. Bur the most of it still remains there. Can anything be done? Thank you, Bill

Reply from Town hall: We have talked to the environment and the Cleaning Councilors so as they will make the necessary for removing this rubbish and protect our neighbours and our environment. Reply from Town hall: We have talked to the cleaning Councilor about this complaint so the rubbish will be removed as soon as possible. We want to apologize about the delay related to the rubbish removal, but the company, which carries out the town cleaning, is very busy these days. Rubbish on Calle Malta: I know the supermarket trolleys have been collected, but I have just taken photos showing the rubbish dumped during the summer is still there. As far as I can see nothing

Subus Airport Bus: Hi Barry, Can you make some enquiries regarding the Subus 1B from the airport. We regularly take this service from the airport, there is a bus stop on the seafront by the first roundabout next to La Molla bar, but despite ringing the bell well in advance, the bus continues without stopping until it

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

reaches the start of the urbanisations at Arenales. Earlier this year we were on the bus with another elderly couple who were also complaining about this. We were forced to walk back the full length of the seafront back to the beginning of the road to Carabassi in the dark. I can’t see any reason why the bus doesn’t stop at a marked official bus stop, can you? Regards, Geoff Barlow Reply from Subus: Subus has it’s own stops. The bus services in the area are private, so an “official” stop doesn’t exist. The market bus stop they mention is of another bus company (most probably Baile). Hi Barry and Sandra Thanks for the quick response. I had seen the timetable showing the ‘approved’ stops, it just seemed illogical that there is a huge gap between the places where the bus actually stops, ignoring (seemingly) the population of Gran Alacant altogether. We regularly walk the full distance of the seafront to catch the bus at the stop in Arenales, but this is becoming more difficult with advancing age and is out of the question on the exposed road when the weather is bad.It is a pity that the bus company cannot be a little more flexible as this would surely lead to increased business from the residents of GA if they knew that there was an additional convenient route to the airport, especially since in the latest edition of your excellent magazine, you highlight the difficulties of obtaining legal taxi services. Thanks for your efforts,

Geoff Barlow Geoff, we have passed your feedback on to Subus. Sand dunes & Walkways:

The importance of the dunes of the beaches of Arenales and Carabassí has led the Ministry of Environment to promote a new regeneration project. The action involves the fenced off area of the dunes, to protect the passage of people, and placing a wicker fence conducive to creating new dunes, which also are planting native species. The walkway that was there has now been relocated. New hotel in Arenales:

The Arenales hotel to replace the dilapidated one on the seafront seems to be getting the go ahead. It should be open in about 18 months time as a 4 star venue. As well as attracting holidaymakers to the area, it will also make its facilities available to residents, the general public and us.

We asked the Town Hall whether they have any news for our readers: Reply from Townhall: We have extended the deadline related to the project XarxaLlibres, so that there is more time for the families to deliver all required documents for the school books gratuity. Moreover, we have set up the Leisure and Adapted Sports Days, so that any citizen in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, despite the disabilities, can enjoy a relaxing day by doing physical exercise. Finally, we want to wish to every reader Happy New Year, hoping the 2016 will bring us all the joy and the happiness that we all deserve. Barry, Sandra, Lou & Ged If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition please e-mail: granalacantadvertiser@ hotmail.co.uk

... a story to share

At about 10.00 this morning I was robbed of a very expensive gold chain bracelet. I was taking the dogs for a walk when I was greeted by two young ladies by the bottle bank at the entrance to Urb. Buenavista. I have spoken to these two people on previous occasions so I didn’t think anything of it, but this time they were very hands on holding my arms and hands while talking to me. Suddenly they said they had to go and ran off, jumped into a grey car and quickly drove away. I thought this was very strange but I didn’t have any money or keys or a wallet on me so I wasn’t too bothered, then I looked down and realised that my gold chain bracelet had disappeared from my right wrist. The 2 young ladies (?) in question spoke only in Spanish and were, I guess, in their middle 20’s or so, one slightly older than the other. The older one’s hair was past her shoulder and in a plait on the right side of her face with a red flower in it, the younger of the two was wearing jeans and a white tee shirt. Please be wary of these women.” Please share this info among your friends. This also happened to me as I went to the rubbish bin two Spanish women on the top road got out of a car and were all over me as though they knew me. I must admit it did shake me up found them intimidating so I got out of the situation as quick as my legs would carry me. They would not have got anything as i had nothing on me just got rid of the rubbish. Regards Mushte COULD THIS BE THEM NATIONAL Police have arrested four members of the notorious ‘Cariñosas’ (cuddlies) gang in Benidorm. The detainees – two men and two women – are accused of stealing holidaymakers’ valuables using the ‘cuddle’ method. Police say the gang drove around in a top-of-the-range vehicle seeking potential targets, namely elderly people and drunk holidaymakers. The gang members would walk up to their targets with friendly gestures, putting their arms around them and even offering sexual favours, while they robbed the person of their wallets, purses, watches, jewellery and other valuables.

Interclub Christmas Dance

Interclub held its Christmas dinner dance celebration on 8th December at the Rincon restaurant Monte Mar, Gran Alacant. Jill had decorated the room so that members and guests arrived to a festive atmosphere. Peter and Alice provided plants for table decorations which members were able to take home. Ladies were given a gift of a box of chocolates organised by Pam and Barry. The menu was selected by the committee and the restaurant produced an excellent meal supported by first class service. Bon Bons were provided to have with the coffee. After the meal dancing started to Timewarp who, once again, selected and played exactly what members enjoyed. For the break Chris and John had organised a tremendous raffle with lots of sought after prizes magnificently presented. This was a highlight of the evening. Mince pies were enjoyed by all present. Dancing then continued until midnight when members and their guests left full of the festive spirit after a very enjoyable evening.

Hello everybody, When we made our decision to move to Spain a few months ago, I was really looking forward to leading a healthier lifestyle and trying the Mediterranean diet. After we had moved, I found myself walking around the supermarket, wondering what to buy, trying to observe what the locals were buying, even peeking in their trolleys to find inspiration!

Then one day I was introduced to my new Spanish friend Mayka, who turned out to be an excellent cook. And what's even better, Mayka has offered to teach me to shop and cook the way the Spanish do, to experience the real taste of Spain! Mayka will share her recipes with us all so I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Lou

SPANISH RECIPE

CARRILLADA DE TENERA - BRAISED BEEF CHEEK Can be prepared from beef or pork cheeks (carrillada). It’s a very popular Spanish dish and cheeks are usually highly demanded by restaurants therefore it’s advisable to order them in advance at butchers. Carrillada are very tender and juice (similar to shanks) and require slow cooking.

Carrillada de Ternera al vino Tinto Braised Beef Cheeks in Red Wine (serves 4) 1.5kg or veal cheeks 1 Litre of Red Wine 1/2 Glass of Brandy 1 Large Onion 1 x Leek, 2 x Carrots 4 x Garlic Cloves Olive Oil Salt, Black Pepper, Bay leaf, (Rosemary & Turmeric - optional)

Check out our online step by step video tutorial on www.granalacantadvertiser.com

1. Place 3 - 4 table spoons of oil in a big pan 2. Add Salt & Pepper to the cheeks and coat with flour 3. Add cheeks to the pan and brown until well sealed and stop loosing juice during cooking. Remove them to bowl and leave to rest. 4. Add onions and leaks into the same pan and fry until golden brown. Then add carrots and fry for few minutes before adding brandy to flambé. Place cheeks back into the pan and add red wine. Add the unpeeled garlic and the bunch of herbs (optional). 5. Slow cook for hour and half. Remove the cheeks to one side, cover with foil and leave to rest. 6. Blend the content of the pan until it has the right consistency, add cheeks into the pan and keep warm over low heat until ready to serve. Serve with mash potatoes, peas and broccoli or with chips or rice and veggies.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

LOVE AND CLIMATE CHANGE

This is the moment of the year when lots of animal species are looking for a mate. When days are getting longer, birds and cats, for example, start the reproductive season. It happens this way because, in order to ensure a reproductive success, the offspring need to be born when the availability of food is optimal. Chicks need approximately 3 weeks to be ready to break the eggshell, and cat pregnancy lasts for 2 months. Taking these things into account, Nature follows this pattern: at the beginning of the year, when days are short, animals find a mate, and, a few weeks later (2 months in case of cats), they will have their babies, exactly at the beginning of spring, which is the moment with the biggest amount of plants, insects and other preys. This pattern becomes even more important for animals which have a highly specific diet. Cat, for example, is a strict carnivore; its digestive tract cannot digest properly carbohydrates (cereals, fruits, etc) because it is highly specialized in proteins and fats (yeah, my cat also loves cereal biscuits, but they are not good for him). Dogs are practically omnivorous, which mean they can

52

obtain their energy from fats, proteins and carbohydrates, so they have no problem reproducing all year round, because every food and every moment of the year is OK for them for raising the offspring. For this reason, there is no specific reproductive season for dogs. How do cats and birds know time for reproduction has come? Because of photoperiod. For this reason, indoor cats, which are exposed to light longer than outdoor cats, have a longer annual reproductive period. In some exotic pets, this artificial alteration of lightdarkness balance may be dangerous for their health since it may produce wrong hormonal cycles. Something very similar happens in case of plants, whose life cycle regulation depends on photoperiod and temperature. For example: almond trees need a short photoperiod and low temperatures for blossoming, so they blossom in January-February. Other plants need a longer photoperiod, so they will bloom in spring. As everyone can see, Nature has its reasons for establishing the order the things must happen: animals mate in winter in order to have their babies in spring; some plants need cold weather to bloom; photoperiod is necessary for hormonal cycles, etc. So, everything follows a plan. The problem starts when animals “suffer” too many daylight hours or when winter is too hot to allow the plants bloom. In most cases, it’s our fault. It’s everyone’s particular responsibility to try to do something for stopping this.

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com

Sheba is a 2 yr old long haired female cat and was thrown out on the streets when her owner moved moved to Madrid. Sheba is friendly and she is very devoted to the people who feed her.

DONOR DOGS APPEAL

There is no dog blood bank on the Costa Blanca. If a dog needs a blood transfusion where does the blood come from? The Pets In Spain animal charity responds to appeals from vets for a dog donor to provide blood when its urgently needed for transfusions to help save the life of a family pet. Rescued dogs in the care of the charity have donated blood for seriously injured and chronically ill dogs, much to the relief of worried pet dog owners when their family pet is suffering. This service by the charity is free of charge and collaborating veterinary clinics will carry out free blood tests on a dog that is brought in prior to the extraction of blood. A donor dog reunion took place this week at the Pets In Spain charity shop in La Marina urbanisation which brought together previously rescued dogs that have donated blood. The photo shows rescue dog donors Zac, Stella, and Murphy with the charity’s founder Mark Lewis, dog adopters Pascal Lillie and Bob Watts, and one of the charity’s collaborating vets Rebecca Gosset. The charity has launched a new long term campaign for dog owners to register their dog on the dog donor register in order to meet the demand from vets for much needed life saving blood transfusions. Pets In Spain animal charity does not receive any grants from local or regional government and is totally self funding. They rely on income generated by volunteers working in two charity shops, private donations and sponsors to fund their many animal welfare projects. To register your dog on the blood donor register, or for more information about the Pets In Spain animal charity call 645469253, email info@petsinspain.com or visit their web site: www.petsinspain.com To view more animals for adoption visit our website. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

Well that's another year gone and a new one to look forward to. Instead of concentrating on one species, for my first article of 2016 I thought I'd see if I can forecast what you should be looking out for throughout the next few months. The year should start off fairly quietly, with all the usual suspects in place – the main pool will be home to the wintering Teals, that small duck with a distinctive red and green head on the males and a flashy turquoise wing bar. These will stay until late March, but of course the regular Coots and Moorhens will be here all year round, with occasional sightings of the turkey-sized Purple Swamphen. You can start looking out for early spring arrivals in February, with the first Swallows and House Martins appearing during the middle of the month, and maybe there will be the excitement of 2015 when for a few days in March the Clot was visited by three or four Great Spotted Cuckoos, a large and noisy bird which seems to occur here only in Spring. The first Bee-eaters should be around towards the end of the month, along with increasing numbers of migrants making their way towards more northerly areas; species to watch out for include Redstarts, Whinchats, Wheatears and Yellow Wagtails. One of the more spectacular temporary visitors will be the Pied Flycatcher, which you should look out for during mid April. These extremely smart black-and-white birds will spend a couple of weeks in the Clot refuelling for their onward journey but you have to be quick – they will only spend about two to three weeks here and are easily seen, but when they're gone, they're gone. By late April the breeding season will be in full swing, and the air will be full of birdsong, the most regular of which will be the scratchy warble and grating alarm call of the Sardinian Warbler as seen in my photo. This is one of the commonest birds in the Clot, and the odd one or two will even turn up in trees and bushes around your house. Also listen out for the powerful song of the Great Reed Warbler in the reedbeds. On the pool we may see breeding attempts by the very rare White-headed Duck, and if we are exceptionally lucky the Marbled Teal as well. The area is one of the strongholds of both these globally-endangered species, and both have bred in the Clot in past years. Down at the Carabassi beach in June we will hope to see the Rufous Bush Robin in the woods; another rare bird which maintains a toehold here, and in the scrub below the cliffs on the beach road every evening the Red-necked Nightjars will irritate us with their monotonous “ker-tuck” call which can go on all night. It is impossible in this short article to highlight everything you are likely to see, but I hope you will keep your eyes and ears alert and enjoy the unfolding spectacle of the Clot throughout the year. You can see lots more photos of wildlife in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.

MALNOURISHED HORSE SEIZED NEAR SAN LUIS SALT LAKE

A horse so thin he was labelled a “walking skeleton” has been seized from owners living near the San Luis salt lake in Spain’s Alicante province, in a joint operation between the Torrevieja Council and the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre.

Sue said the horse seized this month had been tethered to a piece of rope beside the salt lakes, which is public land and therefore made the legal seizure much easier. “He’s a male, about 17 years old and just absolutely skeletal, a walking skeleton, but he has shoes on so they were obviously still riding him. He has problems with the joints of all four legs from being overworked”. The horse is now recovering well at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales. “This case just shows the commitment to animal welfare by the people who are coming into the police forces and local authorities. Our biggest challenge now is funding and finding the space to keep the horses so that these seizures can continue. Anyone interested in making a donation, becoming a long-term sponsor, or volunteering at the rescue centre or in the charity shops can call Sue on 652 021 980.
