“Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ... November is one of the most quiet months in Spain and I suppose you know, how we Spanish people, go to the Cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives. Even if I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that day, the 1st of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place to see with all these thousands of flowers. We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, and answers to your questions, from Paco Carbonell, Councilor of Citizen Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk
The end of an era. After 10 years 10 months and 129 monthly editions we have sold the Gran Alacant Advertiser magazine on to new owners Lou and Ged. Many of you will have seen them out and about, producing their first months edition. We are very pleased with who has taken over, and wish them every success in the future. We will be staying on to help them in any way when asked for help and advice.
to replace the Post Office in Gran Alacant because, as we all know, the present building cannot cover all the demands which our neighbours have. Much information has been collected in order to achieve the re-location of the building (such as traffic incidents, real population which is living at the moment in Gran Alacant…). Right now, we are studying the situation so as the best solution for all people can be achieved.
Paco Carbonell, Councillor of Citizen Services is away on holiday this month. David Fernandez, Secretario Alcadia has kindly agreed to step in and respond to our questions.
Question: Any update on “Jungle Garden” – is it known yet who pays the taxes for the neglected house?
Question: Can we tell readers about a new Post Office yet??
Town Hall Answer: Tax payments are being looked at to ascertain ownership of the property for permission for the Town Hall to go in and take action.
Town Hall Answer: Well, our team is working hard in order
Question: Dog Fouling Hi Barry and Sandra. I am not sure if you

are in charge of Gran Alacant Mag anymore as we are back in Leicester. I wondered who we could write to concerning the awful dog fowling and lack of poo bins around the area. It makes walking around such a pain having to dodge the mess all the time. It must be a nightmare with kiddies. Please have a coffee for us at Hispania. Thanks Jo&Paul Town Hall Answer: Related to this problem, the councillors involved with cleaning and environment are studying the possibility of toughening the penalty fees due to the lack of cooperation of pet’s owners. Furthermore, reinforcement of the number of workers which carry out the cleaning of these areas

is thought to be done by January or February. Question: Skywalk Hi Barry & Sandra, after reading about the new skywalk up by the lighthouse in last month’s issue, my husband & I were looking forward to seeing it now that we are back in Gran Alacant. It’s really lovely, very well constructed complete with several information boards! Alas, my heart sank when I noticed something at the very first board - I decided not to voice my opinion at this stage... However, it became clear that all the news boards include an English translation which is certainly to be welcomed but it is with a heavy heart that I have to report that on each board the English has been defaced by ‘knifing/ keying’ or indeed attempts to rip off the info! How sad! This is such a contrast to a letter which was printed this week in another well known publication, the Costa Blanca News. Entitled, ‘Amazing Spanish Family’, it told the story of a Gran Alacant couple who were visiting the new skywalk for the first time too. On returning to their car they noticed that the silver
part of the ignition key was missing. After spending hours scouring the area they were offered help by a lovely Spanish family who took them back to their villa in GA to get money before taking them to the airport to get a replacement key and indeed they returned the couple to their rental car at the lighthouse. Luckily for us, the latter experience prevails as we find Spanish people generally to be very polite and helpful. Please can you report the matter to the local councillor when you next meet with him. Thank you - keep up the great work! Alex&Helen Question: Road Signs Following your recent request for an update on the above. Despite the Town Hall being requested to permanently fix the road sign at the Avda Del Carabassi, it continues to point in the wrong direction. Town Hall Answer: About road signs, the agent in charge of it has been told to study the best way of fixing them. That is why we ask the people for their patience because this government wants to solve all the problems in the most efficient way.
On the other news. X Cross Popular Abel Anton Race: The X Cross Popular Abel Anton 10k race took place on Sunday 11th of October starting at the Commercial Centre in Gran Alacant. MABS Cancer Charity: Margaret Smith did an excellent job with fundraising for MABS on Friday 25th of September at Dick Turpins Bar and raised 1020€. Well done! More information in our magazine. GASP: Produced a collection of comedy shorts, in both English and Spanish, which was well received by the multinational audience. More information in our magazine.

Friday 25th of September at Dick Turpins Bar was an afternoon not to be MISSED! Margaret Smith and friends held a fundraising afternoon for M.A.B.S. Cancer Support Group Gran Alacant. The sun shone as the fun and laughter spread to the other bars in the square as poor Ian, Margaret’s husband had his beard shaved off after wearing it for 28 years adding to the money raised by bingo, raffle tickets, cakes and coffee to help to raise a grand total of €1020!!! The staff and owners all took part in making the sunny afternoon such a great one! On behalf of M.A.B.S. I would like to congratulate Margaret and her gang for all their hard work and doing such a wonderful job in raising so much money for M.A.B.S. One question, can M.A.B.S. be in your gang?

The race is held every year and is named after Abel Anton, the Spanish long distance runner who won gold medals in the marathon in 1997 and 1999 World Athletics Championships. He was also the first Spanish runner to win the London Marathon in 1998. It was a beautiful sunny morning and a large crowd created a great atmosphere to see the race get under way. While the runners disappeared out of sight we were treated to a dance exhibition by the Gran Alacant Dance Academy. They kept the crowd enthralled and I have to say they were very good. Before we knew it the eventual race winner Raul Martines Anton was crossing the finishing line to claim his 3rd victory in this popular local event.

Raul Martinez Anton, nephew of Abel Anton, won for the third time the popular race bearing his family name in a fast time of 33min 34secs. He was followed by Juan Jose Martinez in 34:36 and Tari Vincente Agullo in 34:57. Anton Abel himself has participated in the first ten races, and hopes to continue doing so as long as possible, largely due to the warmth of his welcome every year from spectators and runners alike. He also presented all the trophies after the race. 17 years old Alejandro Rodriguez, originally from Madrid but now living in Gran Alacant, finished in an outstanding 23rd place in his category. Alexandro attends IES Cap del Aljub Secondary School in Santa Pola and likes to enter local races as a hobby.

CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS
Tel: 966 698 569 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WINTER
It looks like temperatures are (at last) coming down, so we have to start getting ready for winter. The moment for preventing any kind of problem related to low temperatures, and to make sure nothing wrong has happened during the summer is now. We always recommend to test the animal for vector-borne diseases (such as leishmaniasis, heartworm, etc) now, because the critical season has finished, so it’s the best moment for an early diagnosis. Now it’s also a good moment for updating antiparasitic treatments, because our daily routines are different than the ones in spring and summer (for example, in winter there are a big number of flea infestations
54

caused by central heating and carpets at home, because these conditions may make fleas feel much more comfortable at our home, so in many cases, it would be a good idea to pay more attention in anti-flea treatments than we do in summer, when ticks and mosquitoes are the biggest problem). If we have a pet suffering from a cardiac or respiratory chronic problem (such as feline asthma), it’s quite recommendable to have it inoculated against kennel cough (dogs) or cat flu (cats), because those diseases which are not normally very dangerous, may be a serious problem in animals with previous pathologies, in a similar way to human flu for the elderly. If our animal suffers from chronic joint problems (osteoarthritis), it will probably feel worse in winter, due to low temperatures and humidity, so it will be necessary to check its medication (painkillers and joint protectors), and also its bed: a good mattress may make a big difference for these
patients. We should also stop the animal to go upstairs and downstairs (we know sometimes it’s impossible), and to jump. Because nights are longer in winter, we should take the animal for a walk earlier, specially those that suffer from cataracts, which are practically unable to see at night. Some of them even refuse to go out at night for this reason. Another important matter would be Christmas holidays: If we are intending to travel abroad it’s very important to go to see the Vet for making sure everything is OK with the Pet Passport. The earlier, the better, specially if we are going to leave the EU. If we are going to put the animal on kennels, make your reservation as soon as possible, because Christmas is, no doubt, the busiest moment of the year for kennels, so, unless you book it several months in advance, you won’t find a vacancy anywhere. Besides, a good kennel continued on p. 55

Tel: 645 469 253 will always oblige you to have your pet correctly vaccinated, micro-chipped, de-wormed and treated for fleas and ticks, so make sure you do all those treatments or the pet won’t be accepted. If we are not going on holidays, but we are going to have guests at home and we have a nervous pet, there are some treatments available to keep them relaxed (tranquillity pheromones) and avoid them to suffer because their daily routine gets broken. These treatments, which are not sedative drugs at all, can be used in any animal with no risk, and are also valid for relaxing them in case of situations such a new home, new pet, new baby, etc. Finally, we also recommend to have the animal groomed in order to help it with the moulting so it’s able to develop an optimal winter coat.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
I
by Mark Etheridge
hope you don’t believe everything I tell you in these monthly articles well you can believe most of it but sometimes I get it wrong! A few years ago I confidently stated that you can’t see Flamingos in the Clot, and that you have to go to the Santa Pola salinas along the N332 to find them. The Clot pool is too small, I said, and doesn’t have the right food for Flamingos. It suffers from too much human disturbance, I said, and Flamingos won’t tolerate it. They might fly over occasionally , I said, but they won’t land. Imagine my red face, then, when during September and October this year a group of at least five Flamingos took up semi-permanent residence both on the main pool and in the marshy area in the centre of the Clot! As you can see from my picture, these were not the usual pink and white birds that you can see in the salinas, but a sort of dirty off-white colour. Well actually they will grow into their pink and white colours, for these birds are juveniles. Like most birds, they will wander away from their parents to seek new areas to colonise, although why these birds chose the Clot is still a bit of a headscratcher. Still, they seemed happy enough, so they must have been getting adequate food supplies from the Clot, despite the fact that the water is not the same salt-laden stuff which supports a healthy population of brine shrimps which help give the Flamingo its pink colouration. They
58
might not stay, but at least they can be added to the list of birds that have occurred in the Clot. It’s that peculiar-shaped beak which supports the Flamingo’s diet; it turns it upside-down under water and filters through the mud at the bottom of the
pool to extract larvae, small fish and other organic matter. The bird in my photo is ringed and I have found out from reporting it that it has come from La Laguna de Fuente de Piedra which is on the Costa del Sol just north of Malaga. This is one of the largest Flamingo breeding sites in Spain, and each year many of the chicks are ringed – our visitor was ringed in June 2014, so it has come some distance from its birthplace. This is not unusual, as most of the Flamingos on the Santa Pola salinas were also not born there, in fact very few actually breed in our area. And finally, why do Flamingos stand on one leg? The answer of course is that if they didn’t, they’d fall over. You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
