Hi everybody!

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

Just a few words to let you know what’s going on this month as always. No Moors and Christians parades in November, however there is still something to go and have a look at. The biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina from 29th October to the 1st of November. Cocentaina is next to Alcoy, The fair is divided in many areas: medieval street market, agriculture trade, typical products, food etc… You will be able to find all kind of products there. You will need a whole day to see it all. Fiestas in Benidorm from 11th to 16th with music and fireworks. I suppose you know how we, Spanish people, go to cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives, and even though I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that on the 1st of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place with thousands of flowers. Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, and Onil. Bye- bye friends this is all for the quietest month of the whole year.

Hello Everyone, We hope you a good October apart from the few days of rain. There were lots of Halloween parties which you can see pictures of in next month’s issue. There is still lots of entertainment in Gran Alacant so please lets get out there and enjoy all what’s on offer. Also some great photos of the M.A.B.S Fundraising Ball and Interclub Dinner dance inside this issue of the magazine as well. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her?

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Santa Pola Marina Dear Sirs I do not know if I am addressing my concerns to the right place but i do not know who to talk to about this. 2 weeks ago my niece and her husband were walking along the marina area in Santa Pola and a man taking a photo on his camera fell into the water as there was no barrier there to protect him. He was unable to get out- he had a backpack on- the water was deep and he could not climb out- luckily my niece. Her husband and various passerbys managed to pull him out. He had a very bad cut on his leg. This is very dangerous especially for children and I am wondering if a barrier or some form of protection could be erected before someone drowns.

Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this dangerous situation, we are going to transfer this matter to Ports Conselleria, which has the legal capacity of building and modifying all the structures related to the port areas.

I enclose some photos of the gap between the walkway on the marina. I know it's highlighted in red and white stripes but when it's sunny and at night these lines are not clear. The incident happened by the 3rd photo opposite Lizarran. Families come to Santa Pola and they do not expect this gap. I feel there should be some kind of barrier to stop accidents. Thank you. Rose Woodcock (Santa Pola)

Oh and please please allow estate bus to stop in empty taxi rank as our ice-creams melt by time we walk back to Mercadonna bus stop! Thank you, Ann Paterson

Q: Gran Alacant needs new one way traffic system!!!! Waiting for Alicante buses outside Consum in Gran Alacant, we see so many accidents at this roundabout as cars turning right into the smaller road having come up from the N332 have only narrow width to turn. Pease ask the council to consider making a one-way system at junction of roundabout at Avda de Noruega & Avda del Mediterraneo. No right turn on roundabout other than back down to join N332. Much safer to have new one-way system so cars can only go straight across to go round into new one-way road, past Mercadonna bus stop and large car park by Avda Finlandia. Road round to Lidi all part of one-way system back to main roundabout. Estate bus has now changed its route and goes in circular route only via Avda del Mediterraneo along Avda del Carabassi and up Avda de Noruega.

Town Hall Answer: First of all, your proposal is very interesting and we consider it might be an accurate solution to the traffic issue in the related area of Gran Alacant. Thus, we have transferred to the traffic technician your proposal in order to be studied. Q: Entrance Roundabout Hi Lou & Ged, We are never there in the summer months but I simply CANNOT imagine the sight at the roundabout next to Consum - the congestion must be unbearable as it is bad enough ‘off peak’! I guess it wasn’t planned to meet the needs of present day Gran Alacant but I’m disappointed that an opportunity to alter the situation was missed in the redevelopment of the new Lidl supermarket… the same can be said of the roundabout by the Post Office…

Q: Dog Owners Responsibility Hi, in Sweden we do not have a huge problem with dog poop, because the community set up a number of "wastebaskets" in the areas where people walking their dogs. The community is emptying the baskets once per week, and it´s very economically efficient than having a lot of people cleaning the ground and streets by hand. Plus it looks nice and doesn´t smell! I´ve got some nice pictures that you can use and also discuss with the Town Hall and the Tourism Councillor.

Town Hall Answer: All your traffic proposals have been transferred to be studied by the local police and the traffic technician, in order to be included for the next municipal budget, if possible. Q: Gran Alacant New Sign

Kind regards Lars Henze

This picture shows how awful the Gran Alacant sign, on the approach to the urbanisation, has deteriorated recently. Please can we have a new one!

Town Hall Answer: Your proposal has been transferred to the Infrastructure Councilor. Of course, we think it would be a nice solution in order to solve the civism and educational problem about the dog owners responsibility.

Town Hall Answer: Your proposal has been transferred to the Tourism Department in order to be taken into account in the next municipal budget (for 2017), if possible.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: BAILE SANTA POLA/ALICANTE BUS Hello Lou & Ged, My husband and I live at the top of Gran Alacant near the market and we would really appreciate if the Baile’s bus company would consider increasing its number of bus stops to Alicante and Santa Pola - even twice a day would be much appreciated! (I’d think that many people would use this service).

We do not however have a car in Spain therefore need to use the buses. Spain is fortunate to have a wonderful climate with sunshine and warmth most of the year.

Can’t wait to return to GA next month! It’s great to be able to keep up to date with the online magazine though! Great Work! Muchas Gracias! Regards, Helen

Unfortunately in Gran Alacant the Baile bus horario believes that ‘Horario de Invierno’ is 1 de Septiembre al 20 de Junio’. This is when the wonderful Moors & Christian festival takes place & when the temperatura is at its best.

Reply from Baile: Hello Helen, We have a smaller Urban bus in Gran Alacant from Monday to Saturday with this timetable: from 10 to 14 and from 16 to 20h. This bus go round Av/Monte de Santa Pola (new market) and the frequency is every 20 min.

The last bus means that we cannot visit Alicante or Santa Pola to see the festivals or to eat in the many restaurants.

With this smaller Urban bus you can go to the 4 main stops in Av/Mediterraneo; Commercial Center, Sueño Azul and Carabasi beach. From these 4 stops you can change over to the bigger bus that goes to Alicante/Santa Pola. Ask for the ticket to Alicante or Santa Pola on Urban bus to avoid paying for two tickets. You can use the same ticket to change over to Alicante/Santa Pola Bus. Time to change is 1hour and ticket costs 1,50€. Hope this helps, Maria

Many thanks Geoff and Jenny

Q: BAILE BUS WINTER TIMETABLE: My husband and I own a house in Gran Alacant and visit Spain several times a year. We enjoy the fiestas and visiting cities and countryside in this beautiful country as well as reading your magazine.

In England we have rain and cold most of the time. However we class spring and summer when the temperature is more than 15C.

Why can’t the buses run later into the evening. We wondered if you could use your influence with the Town Hall or Bus Company.

Reply from Baile: Hello, First I thank you contact us to show us your suggestion. With regard to what you write in relation to winter time and I have to inform you that at the time tried to put night buses to visit the Moors and Christians in Santa Pola and only had 4 travelers. We put this bus precisely because we get many suggestions like yours and we always try to serve travelers. What happens is that there are few people

who use these services; barely 4 people were on the bus that year despite the service being announced beforehand. What we try to do is to put special buses for fiestas like - Halloween, Carnival, San Juan Bonfires etc. In the winter time the last departure is at 22:10 Alicante. Somo company that later ends its services. The other lines just before us. On Saturdays the last bus is at 23:00 and Sundays at 21.00h. The schedules are adapted to the number of travelers. And believe me when I say I wish we could put buses on later, if there were more people to use the bus, but as I explained above, we have tried the other years and it did not work for us because there were no passangers using them. Yet again I appreciate your words and I encourage you to contact us with any suggestions you have. Always welcome and thanks to you we hope to improve our services day by day. Best regards Maria OTHER NEWS: Barry’s Bits of news Q: CONMAN The tall thin conman is still calling at houses, asking for money for him to pay a locksmith as he has locked himself out. This house owner, who called at my house on October 10th, had read this magazine with its warning in it, so would not give him money. The police have been given his car number. When will he be questioned?

they were still spilling over into the adjoining car park. HUGGING LADY: The hugging lady is back on Gran Alacant. A friend of ours was approached by this lady (who she did not know) and given a really friendly hug. It was not until the encounter was over that she realised that her expensive watch was missing. So watch out for the hugger mugger.

M.A.B.S. Gran Alacant Hospice Ball Raised 3,455â‚Ź

W.O.W..or should I say W.A.N ... What a night! All organised by Jean Reiterbund fund raiser for MABS on Gran Alacant. It is amazing how this lady takes all of this upon herself to achieve these Cancer fundraising events. The vast dining room looked fantastic for the 150 guests who arrived at the hotel Gran Playa in Santa Pola. A lovely meal was provided and many fund raising, raffles etc. took place. A 3 piece band played 2 sets which of course pleased many of the dancers. One of the highlights, at the end of the evening, was your own sponsored helium filled balloon, which had a tag on it of a deceased loved one, which were released around midnight into the night sky. Jackie Philips the founder of M.A.B.S. presented Jean with the very first award for services to M.A.B.S. Jean said that

she was not alone in her goal to have a hospice here on Gran Alacant, as without the support of Margaret Smith, Sue and Martyn Gorfin and Lin and Bill Hodges, she could not reach the heights she was aiming for. Numerous photos were taken by Martyn Gorfin, some of which are in this edition of the magazine, with lots more on the magazine website at www.granalacantadvertiser.com If you would like a copy of any photo you see, you can purchase it for 5 euro per photo, from Martyn, money donated to M.A.B.S. Jean would also like to thank Mac and Angie from Aquarius who sponsored the band, raffle, and an overnight room at the hotel. Also balloons sponsored by Kenneth James in the UK and thanks also to Natasha and Carl who did our balloons at a special price with extras.

A total of 3,455.00 euro was raised on the night for the Hospice. Barry

PLAZA MAYOR THREE MORE DONKEYS RESCUED AS SANCTUARY PREPARES TO MARK EIGHT-YEAR ANNIVERSARY while the other has a nasty nose injury caused by some sort of too-tight head collar. Both are extremely thin and riddled with worms. “Despite all the challenges of running our rescue centre, when I see those two little souls that were dumped on a roundabout and literally abandoned, I know we must find a way to continue,” Sue said.

A British couple based near Alicante are now caring for almost 100 rescued equines after Spanish police this month placed three more seized donkeys under their rescue centre’s protection. Sue and Rod Weeding say they are now searching for a sustainable way to continue their crucial animal welfare work amid escalating running costs, as they prepare to mark eight years since founding the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre on October 22, 2008. “We are stretched more and more for funds to do this and I honestly don’t know how we’re going to continue, but what is going to happen to all these creatures if there isn’t anyone who can take them in?” Sue said. The first donkey was seized by Los Montosinos police and placed in the Weedings’ care on Sunday, October 2 – during their monthly public open day. A young and feisty character, the donkey has since been castrated and treated for a painful hoof abscess. The other two baby donkeys were found dumped by a busy Almoradí roundabout on October 13. “Luckily the Almoradí police were brilliant and managed to get them literally into the police station and hold them in a little pen for stray dogs until Rod arrived,” Sue said. One is so young he is still trying to suckle,

The two baby donkeys dumped by a busy Almoradí roundabout on October 13. “We’ve created a situation in our Vega Baja area where the police are responding and seizing these neglected and abused animals, because they know we here at Easy Horse Care will take them. “But it's really just Rod and I, and we have only a small group of supporters backing us. We receive absolutely no public funding even though we are taking all of these animals for the police. We are so stretched now. Rod and I are working crazy hours seven days a week and we just can't carry on like this. There has to be a solution.” Sue said donations to help cover the costs of these three new donkeys would be gratefully received – even just €5 feeds one donkey for a day. Donations can be made via bank transfer or PayPal online at: http://easyhorsecare.net/donate/one-offdonation The centre is also holding a fundraising competition to name the three new donkeys. Entries cost €2 per name suggestion and can be made via the centre’s online donation form or in person at the next open day on Sunday, November 6 from 1pm to 4pm. MONTE MAR BOWLS Monday 10th October saw Monte Mar entertaining their first touring team of the week, Hemel Hempstead Bowls Club from Hertfordshire. The morning started with a fun Spider competition which was won by our Membership Secretary Les Bounds. Following there was a very competitive match which everyone enjoyed and was won by Monte Mar. Welcome refreshments were enjoyed by all. Tuesday 11th October We welcomed Penarth Bowls Club from Wales. To make up the numbers for Penarth, three of our own members played for them and had a very enjoyable game. All Monte Mar members were presented with a very nice slate coaster. Following the bowling an enjoyable couple of hours was spent having lunch and drinks, when Penarth promised they would be back next year. Wednesday 12th October We played Benitachell our first game in the Winter League. A very strong team, I was happy with our result losing 7 – 5. Also our Berleen did not let us down just losing a very tight game, so well done to you all. R. Start preparing now! ENJOY A HAIR-FREE SUMMER

5 Good Reasons for Laser Hair Removal:

With the summer well and truly behind us now is the perfect time to get ready for a hairless free summer 2017!

Laser hair removal has a number of benefits, but these five are the 5 main reasons why you should do it this winter!

Quick treatments: it only takes usually 15-20 minutes to perform a treatment on the underarm or bikini line area.

You don’t have to grow hair between treatments: unlike waxing, you can shave between the treatments as much as you like, and it will still be effective.

Prevents ingrown hairs: when it comes to removing and preventing ingrown hair, laser is simply the best possible option that you have.

Of course, the question is: how should you remove the unwanted hair? Shaving, tweezing and waxing only provide a short-term solution. Wait a couple of days or weeks and the hair grows back, almost mocking you for your efforts. Not with laser hair removal. While it won’t stop the hair from growing back completely, it will permanently reduce its growth. In addition, the hair that does grow back will be much finer and easier to manage.

AUTUMN AND WINTER IS THE BEST TIME TO START THE LASER TREATMENT Stay out of the sun before your treatment. You can’t receive the treatment if you are sunburnt. Summer is not the best time for laser removal. It’s recommended to start the treatment in the autumn or winter in order to have a stubble free skin for summer!!!

5 sessions - only 65€

Small Area - chin, top lip, armpits, bikini line

5 sessions - only 135€

Large area - arms, legs, chest, back

No skin irritation: Those of you who suffer from sensitive skin can finally say goodbye to skin irritation from waxing and shaving, as there is none of that with laser removal. Saves you money: did you know that laser removal is actually the most economical method of removing unwanted hair? While a single appointment may cost you a little more, you can throw out all those razors, depilatory creams, shaving creams and other products. In addition, there is no longer a need to make an appointment every month to get waxed.

Book your appointment with Erika to get ready for Summer 2017! 26

Chatter EDUCATION

When considering what to write about in this months column, I was mindful of the closure of the summer season in Spain. As halcyon days, turn into the autumn fall, so to, the local children began their drift back to school. As someone who doesn’t have children, I wanted to speak to some Mothers who live in Gran Alacant, about their experiences, with the Spanish school system. The only experience I have of the classroom , is my time spent in full time education in the UK, and work with youngsters at Action for Children, a fantastic charity, primarily dealing with disadvantaged kids. I am always interested to observe and learn about the differences in all aspects of Spanish life. The local Gran Alacant School, is just down the hill from me, I hear the children in the playground, every morning. Family is very important to the Spanish; the differences between Britain and Spain in that respect are stark but does the Spanish education system, live up to their fine example of parentage and progeny? This October I have obtained a position at a School in Elche, teaching English at a fantastic seminary, after their compulsory school day ends. Quality care, expert tuition from dedicated teachers and staff; most importantly, at an affordable price. This general impression of the system here, was something reinforced by the Mothers, who took time out of their busy schedule, to talk to me. Let me first talk about child care. In the UK, statistics show, that on average, the cost of childcare is 40.9% of the average wage. Personally I had friends who would pay up to five hundred pounds a week, for good quality care. In Spain, things are very different. The average percentage of ones

32

wage, that is used to pay for child minding supervision is approximately 8.2%. Gran Alacant has an excellent pre school, for children six months to three years old. The standards offered are well over and above anything comparable in Britain and at an average cost of 217€ a month. I was lucky enough to speak to Julie, who works at Bar Sioux, in Gran Alacant, about her experiences, sending her three year old son to Gran Alacant School. This institution caters for children up to primary age, after which all the enrolled pupils, move on to a senior school in Santa Pola. Children start school in Spain at age 3, which is a good two years earlier than their British counterparts. Initially, I thought it was far too young for a child to begin formal education, but after conversing with parents, listening to their points of view and taking notice of their needs, as well as that of their family , I was amazed at their positive response. Classes begin at 9am, as they do in The UK. There is a morning break at 11.30am; parents are asked to provide a snack for their child, from a daily list provided by the school; this ensures that the children all eat the same thing daily and no child feels left out or at a disadvantage. At 2pm, school is concluded. For some children, especially those who’s parents work, there is a scheme within schools, called ‘Comedor’. After 2pm parents pay 4.25€ a day; for lunch, sleep and play time, expertly overseen by qualified teachers, who care for the children wonderfully. Now here is the big difference, the one thing Britain should learn from, the food, the choice on offer and the amazing quality. All of us remember school dinners in the UK. As a child growing up in the 1970s, I actually felt, we were given a relatively balanced diet, especially compared to UK schools today. I quite liked school dinners; to be honest it is akin to comfort food now for me; however Spanish menu’s are

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

completely different, in every respect. The well-adjusted sensible 1970s diet, could not even compare to that of the selection offered in local schools here: Children are offered salad every day. Not just a piece of lettuce and tomato either. They are also offered other hot choices, to suit every child’s pallet. After looking at a menu, I could see meals, including, stew, paella and tenderloin and potatoes, as well as fajitas and less heavy meals. There is always fresh fruit and everything is cooked daily from scratch. The meals themselves are three courses long; all for such a reasonable price. For those parents who can not afford the costs involved, there is also a grant available from the local communidad. There are many hardships in Spain, especially involving the cost of living compared to wages, so to ensure your child has a good, balanced, fresh and healthy meal every day is a priority and they certainly do it well. Families are expected to pay between 70 – 80€ a year for books and stationery. This once again, depends on an individuals circumstances and there is a school bus that travels around Gran Alacant, which takes children to their local primary. The only downside I could see, was the lack of places in Gran Alacant School, due to the increase in child numbers. Sadly this does mean some parents having to travel further, to take their children to Santa Pola. From what Julie at Bar Sioux told me, she understands that may change next year. I was curious to discover, whether or not the language barrier, also made any difference, when sending an English speaking child to school in the local vicinity. Julie said she had no problems; most teachers grasp of English, was not particularly great, but they were all attentive and perfectly helpful. There were times when an interpreter was needed, although, the Spanish are always happy

to help when they can. To be honest, it wont take a lifetime before their children, are able to understand Spanish for themselves. As a child, the processing of information tends to be absorbed that much better, at 3 years old, it wont take long for a British child to catch up to the standards of their Spanish peers! Education, standards and approach are very different, depending on which Country you live in. I am no expert on the education system here or back in The UK. I have seen the local school in Santa Pola, when going with a friend to pick up her child. It was modern, well staffed and on the surface at least, well appointed. Of course in Britain one only tends to hear of the downside of education; falling standards, crumbling buildings and lack of Teachers. Spain also has its own problems, with many Spanish students preferring to go to the UK to complete their education. Personally I believe, the Primary level of education in Spain, is superior in all respects to the British equivalent. Teachers here tend to command respect and are duly given it. If a child in Spain doesn’t reach the required standards, they are held back a year, until they successfully complete the expected values. Schools do seem to have more discipline in Spain. The Teachers do not take the kind of abuse apportioned by some students in the UK. Whether or not this shows in better qualifications, I am unsure. For me the jury is out on this at the moment. One thing I am sure about, is when Spanish children become young adults and leave compulsory education, they do leave with a higher level of respect for others and society in general. I am fortunate to look at Spain from an independent perspective, for that reason, I don’t judge. I see great standards and good teaching, Spanish parents should be proud of what their children achieve. I hope to play a small part in that process!

FIXED TOOTH REPLACEMENT Replacing missing teeth does not necessarily mean bulky, removable appliances with bulky plates. In many cases it is possible to fill gaps in the dental arch with fixed appliances which feel far more natural and are less obtrusive. Dental bridges utilise the teeth either side of the gap to retain the replacement teeth. They are usually constructed of porcelain with a precious metal base for strength. If the adjacent teeth are unfilled and in good condition it is possible to use a “Maryland Bridge” consisting of the replacement tooth having two “wings” which are bonded to the inside surface of the adjoining teeth. These bridges do not require very much tooth preparation but are only suitable when the loads on the bridge will not be high (eg. anterior teeth). More commonly a fixed-fixed bridge is used and this would involve preparing the teeth adjacent to the gap. A mould of the mouth is taken and sent to a specialised laboratory. Temporary crowns are used while the permanent bridge is made (usually around 2 weeks).

The laboratory constructs the bridge which consists of crowns on both the prepared teeth which are joined together with another crown to replace the missing tooth. Once fitted it feels like three natural teeth. While this does involve some extra work it has the advantage of being very secure and also it is possible to improve the strength and appearance of the adjoining teeth at the same time and usually provides are far more pleasing result.

Dental bridges do rely on the adjacent teeth and gums being healthy and firm and as long as this is achievable provide are long lasting, visually pleasing and unobtrusive replacement for missing teeth.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Valencia Day in Alicante

Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 6 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month I want to talk about our trip to Alicante to watch the “Valencia Day” parade and Guardia Civil demonstration on Sunday 9th October. Ashlee and I, along with some friends, saw all of the different vehicles and equipment that the Guardia Civil use both on the land and in the sea. This was very interesting and they gave guided tours which were informative and inter-active. They had a lot of different displays and the tours of the boats were very popular. It opens your eyes to the amount of various technologies that they have at their disposal to assist in their day to day fight against crime. Then we went to “La Esplanada de Espana” or the wiggly road as Ashlee likes to call it!!! to watch the “Valencia Day Parade”. We have been going to this parade for the past few years and it’s always lovely to see. The parade starts with extremely large figures dancing down the centre of the Esplanada to the traditional music being played by the walking bands. Following them are groups of dancers, their flowing traditional costumes and use of castanets, accompanied by the music from the bands, really make this parade an amazing cultural experience. Next comes a wide range of “large headed caricatures”. These performers really give the parade a comical side. They were dancing and freezing their way down the Esplanada, interacting with the spectators including Ashlee and her friends Miriam and Lucy, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

58

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Behind them was a local “Spanish Human Tower” group. This amazing group stopped every so often to create a human tower. Since the 18th Century the creating of a human tower has become a tradition and is meant to symbolise the traditional Valencian Dance. The

participants all wear black sashes called a faixa, that provide much needed back support. Unlike a human pyramid, a large group of people form a solid base made of people crouched on the floor, surrounded by others who stand with their arms on each other’s shoulders to form the top of the layer. More people stand behind them, giving support as then more people climb up and form levels to create a tower. It is usually a child who gets to climb up and reach the top. This was truly incredible to see. To finish off the day, Ashlee, Miriam and Lucy had a ride on the carousel!!! Well who doesn’t love a ride on a carousel!!! Don’t forget to add this event to your diary for next year, the parade usually starts around 1130/1200 and is always on the 9th October. We hope you enjoyed this article and look forward to sharing another fun place or event with you next month. Star and Ashlee xxx Out & About with Star & Ashlee

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

MAY I COME IN WITH MY DOG? YES, OF COURSE (ONLY IF YOU ARE AT BASQUE COUNTRY) Cities such as Logroño, San Sebastián or Vitoria are not as big as Madrid, so we can have a walk and visit their whole historic centres. And we can take our dog to bars (always asking for permission first, just in case), we must add. All the bars we visited last October in our Autumn holidays at northern Spain and Basque Country allowed our dog to come in. “If he behaves and doesn’t bark, he is welcome here”. And this was valid for cheap bars and also for expensive, avant-garde “pintxos” specialized, restaurants. We are talking of dog friendly and very clean cities. Dogs were allowed even at La Concha beach at San Sebastián. We would like this non habitual condition to be more common at our area: in one hand, to be able to enjoy our pets everywhere, but in the other hand, as a sine-qua-non requirement to make this possible, pet owners should be more “cityfriendly”, for example being careful with their pet’s motions and urine (a plastic bag and a water bottle are enough), and avoiding fights

(walking the dogs on the lead). Otherwise being so permissive with dogs and keeping the city reasonably clean at the same time would be impossible. Our suggestion is: on the way to Bilbao or Santander for catching the ferry, or maybe before crossing the French border if you are embarking in Calais, it’s worth to stop and visit Vitoria or San Sebastián.

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com

Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site or Call: 645 469 253 Jack is around 14 weeks old and was thrown over a fence of a finca, thankfully the guard dog at the property didn't touch him and he is now safe in one of our foster homes. He looks like German Shepherd cross and will be medium size when fully grown.

Timmy is around 4 months old and looking for a forever home. He was found on the streets desperate for attention and was happy to go straight into a friends arms. Timmy is a wonderful, happy and healthy little boy, great with other dogs, cats and good on a lead. He will be medium size when fully grown.

Lola has been adopted from our last edition. Tino is a small 18 month old Lancashire Heeler breed, he is small and quite stocky weighing 9 kilos. Tino is negative for all Mediterranean diseases, neutered, great with other dogs and is a wonderful little boy.

Harry is a gorgeous Snowshoe kitten in need of a new home. He is around 4 months old and is great with other cats, dogs and children. He is a very affectionate little boy and loves a lap to curl up on.

Guinness was born early September with his sister Bailey. Sadly their mother was killed by a car, so K9 took in these orphaned pups. He is a very handsome black and tan little boy and will probably be a medium sized dog. He is very playful and very inquisitive. Like his sister, he loves people and both are very friendly who love snuggling up with each other. READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

BLACK REDSTARTS

D

o you own, or are you staying in, a nice house in Gran Alacant? Of course you keep it clean and tidy (or at least I hope you do) and you wouldn't put up with rubble and other mess. You'd keep the roof watertight, you'd repair holes in the walls and you'd try to keep the more nasty species of insects well away from your door. Location is another important aspect – you wouldn't want to live next to an electricity substation for example, and neither would you want to live in the shadow of a hulking great nuclear power station. Apart from the view outside your window, you wouldn't want your children to grow up with two heads, webbed feet or glowing green in the dark. But here's a bird which seems to like precisely these kinds of environments to breed. After the end of the Second World War, they were found living quite happily in bomb sites, and more recently in industrial complexes, power stations and abandoned warehouses back in the UK. It is still a relatively uncommon bird in Britain.

86 86

So why am I telling you all this? Well for some reason many birds which have bred in such desolate places during the summer arrive en masse in the Costa Blanca for the winter, and in fact they become one of the most common birds here in Gran Alacant. You might think all the birds you can see from your house are the ubiquitous sparrows, but if you look closely you will see that several are Black Redstarts (Collirojo Tizon in Spanish), identifiable by their “whee-chackchack-chack” call and quivering red tails.

My photograph shows an adult male in all his finery, but most of them are the slatygrey females and juvenile birds – watch out for their orange-red tails which they quiver restlessly while they perch. New males only get their handsome plumage during their first breeding season, so any you see looking like this are at least 18 months old. They tend to spend the night around the urbanisations, then disperse down to the Clot where they feed on the plentiful insect life during the day, so unless you are out and about in the Clot you are most likely to see them during the early morning and evening around your house. They are here from late October until late March, when they migrate northwards for the breeding season. A few of them live in cooler areas of Spain in the summer, but most of them are Northern European birds, mainly from France and Germany. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
