Hi everybody,

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

This year the Holy Week takes place in the middle of April with Palm Sunday on the 14th. From the 15th to the 19th you will be able to see processions everywhere at different times of the day in the whole Costa Blanca. The most beautiful Palm Sunday procession is the one held in Elche. In fact is declared of International Tourism Interest. If you can’t come to see every procession that is held in Santa Pola and I recommend you to come and enjoy the biggest that takes place on Holy Friday. A Medieval Market will be held in the Fortress Castle from 18th to 21st. From 5th to 7th Santa Pola Town Hall organises the fair Fire, Fiesta and Fair, “Foc, festa y fira” with plenty of activities, concerts … taking place at the castle. More parades of Moors and Christians held this month in: Banyeres de Mariola 19th to 26th, San Vicente del Raspeig 26th to 30th, Onil 22nd to1st May, Busot, Granja Rocamora . In Alicante on the 2nd of May the “Romeria de la Santa Faz” takes place. If you want to discover what a popular pilgrimage in Spain is go and join it, but I must warn you that there will be thousands of people That’s all for now Hello Everybody, The sun really shines on st. Patrick’s day! Hope you all enjoyed the entertainment on offer wherever you went. You can see few pictures inside the magazine and more on our website. The new hotel in Gran Alacant is now well underway; let’s hope it’s a great addition to the town. Hope you have a great Easter! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 34 and Casper on page 57

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Community Road safety Over time, and more especially on market days during the most busy times of the year, it has become very apparent that the road ( Calle Monte de st a pola ) which borders Altomar Two and close to bungalows 66 and 68 and the market venue, has the potential, in my opinion and that of my neighbours, of being the scene of a serious road traffic accident. Having monitored the vehicles using the road, and the pedestrian traffic crossing the same road from all areas of proximity to the market, it becomes very evident that cars and motor cycles are travelling far faster than the law allows and the road conditions dictate, thereby putting the safety of all pedestrians at risk. During the times of the market, especially during the holiday periods, pedestrian traffic obviously peaks and those crossing the road comprises of the elderly, small children (some of which are not accompanied), holidaymakers and property owners. This melee and throng of people have their main objective and concentration focused on visiting the market and enjoying everything it has to offer. And therefore occasionally, they will not always be paying due attention to the possible real inherent dangers of crossing an extremely fast and potentially life threatening road. Through your magazine, may I and some of my neighbours, request that a survey be undertaken by the traffic police, in consultation with the Town Hall etc to the possibility of traffic calming measures being introduced on the stretch of road just outside or near to the automatic barrier gate of Altomar Two on the road running parallel to the market? This small but effective measure, would I am sure be supported by most people, and help to keep all members of the public safe

6

on our roads! Children and the elderly are particularly at risk, and it would be a very sad tragedy for everyone if the warning signs were ignored to the deriment of this very vulnerable group? Yours sincerely, MJ Clifford Altomar II Property Owner Town Hall Answer: Related to your question, the idea o setting up traffic calming measures in the area has been sent to the Police Department so as it can be studied.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS

The biggest talking point this month is all about the press release concerning the new 4 star hotel now being built on Gran Alacant.

You can see the computerised picture of how it should look, as well as the picture we have taken, showing its exact location. I would imagine there are people who do not want to rent a villa and do self catering and would prefer a hotel. I wonder if their amenities, especially the

swimming pool will be available to walk ins. What have we been told about the new hotel…

*Parking spaces and commercial premises *The Hotel AJ will enhance the attractiveness of the area and will be located next to the shopping centre *It is being built on an area of 11,500 square. *The hotel will occupy 6,000 m2, of which 4,000 m2. will be for parking spaces and another 1,500 m2 will be allocated to commercial premises, among them the establishment of a clinic centre. *The AJ hotel will be equipped with 108 rooms, all of them with terrace and exterior views, 8 of which will be adapted for clients with reduced mobility. *Will have 8 suites, as well as a swimming pool, leisure areas and restaurants for the clients. *It will also have a total of 160 parking spaces. *All its facilities will make Hotel AJ a landmark in the area, combining the business client with the leisure and sports client. Interior decoration will be made by the well-known Valencian interior designer Julio Güixeres. *The facilities have been designed taking into account the criteria of sustainability and energy efficiency, handling standards well above what the law currently marks. *The project, involves an investment of more than 10 million euros, and is promoted by the company Nou Mediterrani, whose two main partners are the ASA group,

and Josman group. The two businessmen are also owners and managers of the Gran Alacant shopping center, opened in June 2005, showing a vision of the future and great confidence in the development potential of this area. *The hotel will be managed by the SH hotel chain that has more than 20 years of experience in the management and operation of premium hotels, among which are the already established SH Villa Gadea in Altea (5 stars), the SH Valencia Palace ( 5 Stars) and SH Ingles Boutique Hotel (4 Stars), the latter in València city. *As usual on Gran Alacant there are many views about this project, but of course this is not different to any place in the world that always have their views. *You would expect that anyone investing these sorts of money will have done their homework before starting this project.

********** This picture shows new pathway to the beach on the very dangerous roadway where beach goers used to have to walk, hopefully not getting knocked down by motorists.

Which piece of land is it? The piece in front of the farmacia or the extension to the existing school? Where will the school be built? Town Hall Answer: Regarding to the your two questions, in the piece of land in front of the “Farmacia” the second public school is going to be built in a very short time. Furthermore, in the piece of land next to the existing school we may build a High School in order to offer all the same opportunities to scholars living in Gran Alacant as if they were living in Santa Pola.

********** The second school for Gran Alacant has taken a new step to become a reality since the Ministry of Education, Research and Sports has definitively approved the modification of land use on the plot of 13,000 square meters on which the center will be built. That is to say, that the land was for administrative-institutional use in the general plan of urban planning and now it will become an educational tool. This approval, which was published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), gives security to the plan, although the most important step is the construction of the center. Q: New School I have read that a piece of land has been given the ok for the school.

In fact, the construction of a new (and the first) Highs School in Gran Alacant has been approved by Conselleria recently because the Town Hall, and more specifically, the Major (Yolanda Seva) and the Educations Councilor (Loli Tomás) have been asking for it since 2015. ********** Your community is now able to apply cost sanctions if they so wish on holiday lettings. Spain’s Horizontal Act is amended allowing Community of Owners to vote by a simple majority of 3/5 to ban outright holiday rentals within a community. If everything is harmonious on your community regarding holiday lets then I don’t suppose there will be a problem. If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

CAN CERVICAL CANCER BE PREVENTED?

Cervical Cancer is the third most frequent neoplasm in women worldwide. This disease occurs when the cells of the cervix begin to transform and grow uncontrollably, initially becoming precancerous lesions, and subsequently, if this alteration persists in cancerous lesions. It is known that the causative agent of practically all of this cancer is a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). And this is where screening through cervical-vaginal cytology or, more recently, the HPV detection test is of great importance. This test allows us to detect early premalignant lesions and act according to their severity.

14

HOW TO PREVENT CERVICAL CANCER? * Use Condoms * Don’t Smoke * Get Vaccinated Vaccination against Human Papilloma virus (VHP) is very effective against high-risk sub-types, which are HPV16 and HPV18, responsible for the 70% of cases. Vaccination is recommended for children 11-12 years old. If it has not been received at this age, vaccination is advised for girls from 13 to 26 years old and for boys from 13 to 21 years old. Vaccination is currently recommended regardless of age, especially

PLAZA MAYOR

in immunosuppressed patients. * Finding cervical pre-cancers The best method to prevent cervix cancer is to have testing (screening) to find pre-cancers before they can turn into invasive cancer. The Pap test (or Pap smear test) and the HPV (human papillomavirus) test are specific tests used during screenings for cervical cancer. If a pre-cancer is found, it can be treated, stopping cervical cancer before it really starts. Most invasive cervical cancers are found in women who have not had regular Pap tests. The HPV test is a specific test to assess the presence of the virus in the DNA cells of the cervix and if it is at high risk. If the test is positive, more tests will be done. It is recommended to women between 25 and 65 years old every five years.

Helen Goodman, the Poppy Appeal Organiser for Gran Alacant & La Marina Branch, is seen presenting a Thank You Certificate to Store Manager Anthony Burton.

RBL VISIT A MOORISH TEAHOUSE A band of intrepid members of the Gran Alacant and La Marina branch of the RBL in Spain, recently visited the Carmen del Campillo Arabian Teahouse in the late afternoon. Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but very close to the main road from Crevilente to Albertera, this tranquil oasis is like nothing we had ever seen before. A haven of tranquillity and shade. Inside the decorative gates, there are exotic gardens illuminated by arabian lanterns as dusk approached, and a large winding property with a labyrinth of different furnished rooms, some with roaring log fires. There are peacocks roaming the grounds, piped Arabian music and a tepee on one of the terraces of the tea house. The gardens are woven intricately throughout the house, with trees even poking out through the roof. We rested our legs in the courtyard, with wonderfully coloured shrubs, vines, and ferns dangling all around us. There we partook of various teas and fruit smoothies, accompanied by nutty pastries dripping with honey.

HELPFUL TIPS

We need to remember to bend & lift properly, always be aware of your back whilst moving heavy items or doing exercise, even whilst walking or sitting in a chair, maintain good posture. Try and avoid or reduce foods & drinks containing caffeine. Caffeine reduces the body’s natural pain-killing chemicals.

A lot of us suffer from back pain, some of which can be down to herniated discs, arthritis, for many women it can be a weakness caused from our child carrying days or it could be down to something completely different. The centre of the back can be thought of as a column made up of 33 pieces of bone called the vertebrae. The spinal column is strengthened by ligaments, which run the length of the spine and is supported by muscles, which attach to the vertebrae

Reduce your intake of meat & sugar, these foods exacerbate inflammation. Stress is also a huge factor for exacerbating inflammation in the body, so try, wherever possible, to maintain positive. Eat oily fish at least twice a week. And fresh rosemary in your meals is great for improving circulation and aiding healing. Ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper, onions and garlic are all great natural antiinflammatories. Get adding a teaspoon of turmeric to your rice dishes, curries, soups & stews to reduce the pain. Aromatherapy massage: the essential oils penetrate into the bloodstream and really help calm muscle spasms. Lavender, Eucalyptus, Roman Chamomile, Black Pepper or Wintergreen to name a few, are great oils for this.

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Peak El Caire (1049m) in Sierra de Salinas

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes.

Driving Time: 55 mins Walking Time: 3 hours Google maps directions: Calle Rambla, 03638 les Salines d’Elda, Alicante

This is part of the route PR-CV 159. It’s quite well marked. Just follow the narrow footpath, white and yellow painted stripes and man made rock formation to keep on route. Once you have done the hardest climb, the path goes lightly uphill left all the way until you see the mark of the peak El Caire on the next hilltop. That’s where we are heading! We drove our car to the little Park Ermita in Salinas. Right there next to the road you can spot the wooden signs indicating you to the route PR-CV 159. Naturally you go uphill. It took us about an hour to get through the

This route gives you panoramic mountain landscapes in 360°. If you are able to climb steep hill with some loose rocks for an hour, this route is for you to enjoy. We go up to the peak at 1049 meters and come back the same way.

The thermometer was at 4°C when we got out of the car, but the climb made us sweat bullets. When we got back to the car it was 15°C. You don’t have to climb much to get to enjoy the spectacular views. It is absolutely stunning up there. Especially in the morning with some fog and clouds hanging down. It’s like being on top of the world. The whole route up to the peak and back took us about 3 hours. On our way back we took a lunch break and enjoyed the sun and the landscape. We climbed about 450 meters up. The route in total was only about 5,5 km. The hill is quite steep, so pair of trekking poles would be very

CHECK LIST

Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi

There never was and there never will be another like you ... Hi, I am Jemma, In the coming months I am going to share what I continue to learn from animals through my work as a volunteer at SAT www.satanimalrescue.com and at the Easy Horse Rescue Centre www.easyhorsecare. net. This month I have been observing the many different ways the dogs walk and generally ‘hold ‘ themselves. Some waddle along in a very relaxed manner, tails free, upward and swinging from side to side. Others kind of strut and almost move their legs as if they are dancing; others move slowly and at times reluctantly, tails down and heavy and with little movement and then there are all those ranging in between. I know that these movements reflect how the dog is feeling, whether he is relaxed or fearful, settled or anxious. So I am reminded through my yoga and meditation training that as humans we have the ability to take control of our movements and thoughts. This month I became more conscious of how I walk when I am with the dogs… am I fully upright, chest relaxed and open ready to receive and give to what the moment brings or is my head down and my shoulders slouching, closing in and hence missing potentially. How is the alignment of my whole body? Is it balanced and even, do I walk with awareness of both my right and left side. My understanding is that how we hold our own body and how we walk does affect the way we interact with people and the world at large, so I have the ability to change my physical posture and movements, and hence my experience of life…

outgoing/flamboyant or very energetically strong people (more about this next time) or forget our individuality, so this month I have spend time to acknowledge the unique and specialness of the dogs and horses I am with, and hence to acknowledge my own... and maybe you too could take some time to do that.

ANIMAL OF THE MONTH

It’s LOLO this month … Lolo has been at SATs now for over 2 years, he’s is about 5 and a half years old… He used to live with a man with mental health issues and I guess was a loved and supportive companion. But sadly there came a time when he was not able to care for Lolo anymore . Lolo came in to the centre with severe skin damage due to fleas and lack of care. It’s not been easy for Lolo and I often wonder how much leaves it’s mark on the dogs… Lolo is gorgeous dog whom I have spent a lot of time with. He’s very loving, adores his walks, so enjoys to roll when he gets the chance and play ball but can be unpredictable . He needs to be on his own, as he does not interact very well with other dogs, though I believe this could change, … and he needs lots of time, attention, interaction and love.

Please get in touch with SAT or Easy Horse if you are interested in volunteering in any way. Jemma x

This leads me on to how different a character each and every dog and horse that I spend time with has, and how in some way that brings out or maybe even facilitates a different aspect of myself. Everybody is unique, but often we blend with the crowd, lose ourselves when amongst dominant/

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.

Agost and Maigmo

“All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour...

Agost calls itself the pottery-town. They even have a museum dedicated to it. And not all the “pottery” is small scale and there are quite few factories that manufacture bricks, some of which end up here in Gran Alacant. You can reach the Maigmo from 2 directions. From San Vicent de Raspeig or

from Agost. From San Vicente side you get a couple of ramps with gradient of ~10% but from there it looks like you are climbing a mountain. The steep rocky mountainside is on your left side all the way to the top. The road from Agost is gentler. The CV-827 doesn’t have really steep ramps but it is 8km of steady draggy but very scenic curvy road all the way up. The road is very popular among cyclists and motorcyclists. So there will few “motos” flying past you on the road. The road is marked as a cycling route for the weekends so there aren’t many cars. From the top you can speed back to San Vicente or you can turn back and enjoy the curves and the views followed by a coffee stop in Agost. Usually we ride to Agost through Verdegas and then return through Orito. So there are a few route-options to choose from. The climb from Agost is frequently used in bike races. Our group was there recently for the “Vuelta de Comunidad Valenciana” to watch the professionals take it on. It seems that our group was faster since we were at the finishing line in Alicante to

Via Verde is a old rail-road track (without the rails these days) which has been made into cycle or footpath. DRAMA IN A TEACUP His invitation to the St Patricks Day Ball had been a surprise. It was Edward’s third attempt at trying to find someone who would get him an invitation and finally his friend Jeremy had come up trumps. The Ball was being held in the home of Lord Patrick O’Connor and was always held on St Patrick’s Day to raise funds for the homeless. This year it was on a Sunday and so he had all day to get ready in Formal Dress, another first. Jeremy picked him up in the taxi and as they arrived at the grand entrance to the Stately Home of the host, Edward’s nerves began to bite. The reality of mixing with the well to do made his palms sweat despite Jeremy assuring him that everyone was “normal”.

It turned out the Jeremy was right. The huge Salon was packed with people of all ages in Formal Dress, but they were all having a great time. No sense of the upper class aloofness that he had been expecting. He mainly stayed with a small group of people about his own age and they toured the house and grounds ending up back in the Grand Salon where the music had now turned to something with a dance beat. Jeremy pulled him aside and said there was someone he wanted him to meet and he introduced Edward to Lady Flora Pois. “It’s French for Pea” she said “but don’t make any jokes, I’m Patrick’s niece I have to live with it and I have probably heard them all. Please Just call me Flora , uncle doesn’t like it shortened more than that”. They both smiled and started a conversation that eventually turned to their likes of musical theatre. As it turned out, neither of them had seen Phantom of the Opera, despite it having been playing in the West End for most of their lives. “I think uncle can get some tickets for that, at quite short notice, why don’t we go together, say two weeks on Monday”? He was stunned. She had just invited him on a date and they had only met an hour ago. It was an opportunity not to be missed and although he could feel the

eyes of the rest of the group staring at him, he hardly hesitated to accept. ‘Two weeks on Monday’ seemed like ages but then, here it was. Edward had dug out his best clothes, even resorting to buying a new pair of shoes to make sure he looked his best. The musical was on in Her Majesty’s Theatre, very fitting he thought. They had agreed to meet in Brown’s for Afternoon Tea. It was expensive but he felt it was the right thing to do and it was only a ten minute walk to the theatre, past Trafalgar Square. Brown’s had been gradually filling up during the afternoon and Edward was beginning to think it might become difficult to recognise Flora in ordinary clothes rather than her beautiful formal dress. He resisted the temptation to have a drink to steady his nerves and concentrated instead on how the conversation might go. Although she was friendly and easy going at the party, she had been in the company of her friends and he was an outsider. Now, the playing field was even, except that Edward’s choice of one of the finest restaurants he had been in may not have been the best idea he had ever had. They’d agreed to meet at five o’clock and it was just approaching five past when, there she was, entering as though she owned the place. As she walked over and sat down, she put on the table, an envelope with her name in gold letters at the top. ‘Lady Flora Pois’. Below was a plain white sticker which she began to remove. “My name is Flora” she said “but its O’Connor not Pois, that would be silly; Patrick is my dad”. She lifted the sticker on the envelope to reveal the anagram “April Fools Day”. “Daddy has provided tickets for us though. They say ‘start with a joke and end with a song’. Let’s eat; I‘m really looking forward to tonight“.

Mayka’s Kitchen

SIERRA MAR

Hi all This month I have decided to do a recipe that many customers and friends been asking for. Garlic Prawns Hope you all enjoy it. xxx

Garlic Prawns

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

PEELED PRAWNS (20 APPROXIMATELY) 5 CLOVES OF GARLIC CHILI (DRIED CAYENNE PEPPER) PIMENTÓN (RED PAPRIKA POWDER) EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL SALT PREP: 20 MIN COOK: 10 MIN

Let’s Start! Chop the garlic in slices, some chili (depending on your preferences). Add quite a lot of olive oil in a pan until covering the entire bottom and heat it up. When the oil is hot, add the garlic and chili. Once all these ingredients are slightly fried, incorporate the peeled prawns (without head) and cook them in the pot for three or four minutes, until they have a pink color. Sprinkle a teaspoon of paprika powder (spicy or sweet) over everything and some salt. Very important: It needs to be served sizzling hot! And to prepare it back home, don’t worry if you don’t have a clay pot, it also works great in a pan. So there’s just left to say: make sure to get a good bread, because you definitely want to dip it into this tasty sauce! Hope you all enjoy x

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Pola Park, Santa Pola

Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. Pola Park is somewhere that Ashlee and I have had lots of fun over the years and on the 16th March they opened their doors for the 2019 season. This amusement park has many many rides for kids of all ages and a number of them are enjoyed as much by the adults as they are by the kids. As we visit regularly throughout the year we take advantage of their pass which gives access to every ride for the whole season. This year I paid for the pass online and collected it at the park, although you can also have it sent by post to your home.

Pola Park has around 30 attractions

68

including a rollercoaster, a large slide, bumper cars for small kids and big kids, bungee trampolines, regular trampolines, a train, mini golf, a bouncy castle section, a small wheel, a multi level playing area, go karts, quads, a pirate ship, bumper boats, motorised cars, a fun house and at certain times a house of horrors. A small arcade area has air hockey, bowling and grab a teddy machines, which you can also find dotted around the park as well as other small rides, however they are not included in the price. Throughout the year you can also see shows, the biggest of which is for Halloween when different creepy characters parade around the park and give performances. Located next to the N332 in Santa Pola, Pola Park is only a 10 minute drive away. You can get the bus from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola and it is about a 15 minute walk to get there from the Bus Station. During March, April, May, the majority of June, September, October and the first few days of November they are open Saturdays 1800 to 0000 and Sunday afternoons from 1230 until 1900. They also open

It does not cost anything to enter the park and only those who are actually going to use the attractions need to buy a ticket/ bracelet. There are many different ticket options, individual tickets cost from €14 to €18 depending on age and you can also buy Family Tickets that are for 2 to 5 people and range from €26 to €54. The season passes are €75 individually, although you can pay €70 online if you have had a pass in the past. On some of the attractions, 2 to 7 year olds need to be accompanied by an adult and it costs an additional €40 so that any adult can accompany the child. It is worth checking their website as they often have special offers and reduced price tickets. There

Don´t forget another of our favourite Easter activities, the Easter Egg Hunt at the Grand Design House, (see our previous article online) is taking place on Sunday the 21st and Monday the 22nd April this year. You can book it via their facebook site which also has details of the many other activities that you can participate in. Happy Easter everyone. Until next time Star and Ashlee xxx

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

CUCKOO

How many bird songs do you know? No, I'm not talking about “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep” by Middle of the Road, or the massively insane “Surfin' Bird” by The Trashmen (look it up on YouTube!), but actual birdsong. Most regular birdwatchers could probably identify 30 or more; if you've got a good memory for sounds it's fairly easy to recall a birdsong if you've watched a bird singing away for any length of time, and of course Spring is the best time to do this. Some birders study birdsong in great depth, and I am full of admiration for those who can identify something rare like a Richard's Pipit from a single cheep from a high-flying bird. But if you're new to the game, you might say that you can't identify a single bird call. Well I'll bet you fifty Euros you can! There is one bird whose call is so recognisable, everyone knows it – however if you saw a picture of one you might be scratching your head. The title at the top of the page will have already given a clue as to which bird it is this month, but would you recognise the Cuckoo in my photo if you didn't hear it calling? The Cuckoo's song is loud, far-carrying and repetitive, but the bird itself can be quite

78

shy. By the time this article appears, the Cuckoos should have arrived in the Clot and elsewhere in the surrounding countryside, and calling away to advertise their presence to any female birds lurking around – the bird in my picture is the slaty-grey male bird, the female is much browner. She will lay up to 25 eggs during one breeding season, and each individual female will specialise in parasitizing one particular species, usually the one which raised her when she was born. In the Clot, the most common victims will be Reed Warblers, Great Reed Warblers and White Wagtails, although it has been estimated that the Cuckoo will attempt to use the nests of up to 120 different species throughout their range. It's not all bad news for the poor birds who have to put up with raising cuckoo chicks. One out of three Cuckoo eggs will be rejected by the hosts, and Cuckoos aren't brilliant at recognising the fact that another Cuckoo has already laid an egg – many instances of several Cuckoo eggs being found in the same nest have been reported, and of course only one of these will survive, the first chick to hatch will dump the other Cuckoos over the side. It's not just us Brits who are good at recognising the sound of Cuckoos, the Spanish name for them is Cuco! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge. smugmug.com See you next month. Mark

Given the lack of rain the course at El Plantio is holding up very well as it is normally February and March when rain fills the lakes and ponds ready for pumping onto the course a little later in the year. Let’s hope that the greenkeeping team can keep on top of these unusual dry conditions so that the course does not suffer later when the really hot weather arrives. We are now in our second year of writing these articles and we hope that you have enjoyed reading about our Society. PUPPIES KIDNAPPING IN ALICANTE

Both puppies were recovered by their owner in good condition. Stealing dogs is not uncommon, but it’s the first time we have heard about demanding a ransom. Both puppies were microchipped and the disappearing had been reported by the owner. These two facts made possible a quick rescue.

A month ago we read in a local newspaper an unusual article whose title was: “they kidnapped a dog in Alicante and then demanded a ransom of €200”. A 22 years old man was arrested when he was going to ransom a puppy which was hidden into a pram. He had covered the puppy with a sheet as it’s commonly done with newborns. The puppies had been stolen from a country villa the day before, and the thieves demanded a €200 ransom. The puppies were American Bullies, which had an estimated value over €2000. The owner called the Police and they sent a couple of plainclothes agents to the place where the kidnappers wanted to meet the owner. When arrested, the thief told the Policemen he didn’t know anything about a kidnapping, since he was just a middleman who just was told to carry one of the puppies to the meeting point, but, of course the Policemen didn’t believe him and he was arrested and charged with burglary. And, what about the other puppy? It was “mysteriously” abandoned in a Vet practice in Alicante. Of course, the accomplice got scared when his colleague was arrested and got rid of the second puppy quickly.

86

American Bully is a very rare breed in Spain and, so far, it’s not included in Potentially Dangerous Dogs Breeds List, but the thing is it looks very similar to American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which is included at the list, so the owners might be eventually obliged to walk the dog with muzzle, to have an insurance and all the other requirements applicable to dangerous breeds, since the Spanish Dangerous Dogs Act also mentions “any other dog not included in this list, but showing characteristics such as weighing more than 20 kg, short hair and powerful muscles and jaws”. Dangerous dogs owners must be very careful, since it’s their responsibility to avoid the dog escapes or gets lost, and could be pursued if it happens. Sometimes, when we adopt a dog or a cat we don’t legalize them immediately but a few weeks later. This is not a big problem (despite we encourage to microchip them as soon as possible just in case they get lost) except if we are talking of a dangerous dog. In this case, the sooner the better, because we can get in big trouble if something happens. It’s also very important to have our details (specially telephone number) updated at RIVIA database. Nowadays this is a very simple procedure that can be done by the owner at RIVIA owners intranet website, but, of course, if you prefer, we can do it for you at the practice with no extra charge.

BLANCA Pointer/Lab cross. She mixes well with other dogs , likes people and is obedient. She also has an amazing personality and is very intelligent..

Sira came from a home where children pulled her about so not suitable for a home with children or dogs..
