WHAT IS THE FLU? The flu is a severe and contagious viral infection that affects the respiratory system and is produced by the influenza virus which can occur as type A, B or C. This virus is transmitted by air from person to person through respiratory secretions such as coughing or sneezing and enters another’s respiratory system via the nose or mouth. The flu can be a sickness that has a definable duration and/or light intensity, but it can be very serious for pregnant women, children under 2, adults over 65, people with other chronic pulmonary illnesses (asthma, COPD), heart disease, diabetes, nephropathy or a compromised immune system. The symptoms? • General malaise • Muscle pains • Fever and cold chills • Cough • Sore throat Most of the flu cases last for a limited time and only require treating the symptoms with analgesics, rest and abundant liquids. What would be the alarm signals? Respiratory difficulty or the feeling of a lack of breath, rapid breathing, drowning sensation, state of confusion, and for children, especially the very small, irritability, continuous crying, refusal to eat or signs of dehydration. Differences with the common cold? The common cold causes only light fevers and never above 38.5o C. The feeling of general malaise is less intense, and the overall condition is less affected, but with greater nasal secretions.

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month Hi everybody, In February you can enjoy Moors and Christians parades in Bocairente from 1st to 5th and in Sax from 1st to the 5th. I haven’t been able to find out the exact day and time for them, so if you need more information do please go to the Tourist Info. Another activity in February are Carnivals! All towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals! One of the best in this area is the one held in Torrevieja. There are two main carnival parades: first one is on Sunday 24th at 5:30p.m. and the second parade is on Saturday the 2nd March at 7:00p.m. About sports, if you have any friend or family that would like to join The Tabarca-Santa Pola Open Waters Swim you have to warn them that pre-registration process will be from 8th to 19th February. Like every February do not miss the almond blossom in Jalon or Guadalest valleys. But if you want to see something special go to see my favourite “El valle de la Seta” and enjoy the little villages of Famorca and Facheca. It could be beginning, middle or the end of the month, but the blossom lasts about ten days. Local people do not stop telling me that if I want to see it I have to do it as soon possible because they got a real problem up there. Almond trees are being attacked by a plague “Xylella Fastidiosa” and who knows … maybe in few years time we will not be able to enjoy this beauty anymore. Bye bye friends. Hello Everybody, It has been a mild start to the year weather-wise. We hope you are all taking advantage of the many great deals in the local restaurants, cafes and bars. Lots of great events still going on in Gran Alacant whatever your looking for … music, dancing, live football, quizzes … just look inside the magazine at all the major venues to see what’s on near you and don’t forget this month is Valentine’s. Have you reserved your table yet? Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 11 and Casper on page 22

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk
NEWSLETTER FROM THE TOWN HALL First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere wish that this Christmas has been a very pleasant and happy holiday for everyone.
estimated at more than 4 million Euros. This debt came from the defaults for the construction in an urban sector of Gran Alacant by the promoter.
I also want to make very clear my strongest commitment to the development of improvements in infrastructure and services for Gran Alacant.
The City will charge about 200,000 Euros every two months until reaching the total debt and we intend to put all the administrative machinery underway to reinvest most of that money in Gran Alacant.
For this, this year 2019 we have two very good news for the whole neighbourhood: The first news is the fact that the City Council has finally obtained from the Conselleria of Education approval for the construction of an Institute of Secondary Education, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training for Gran Alacant. The construction project of the building, drafted by the Technical Services of the City Council, valued at about 15 million â‚Ź, has already been sent to the Conselleria to obtain its approval. We hope that the bureaucracy of the Conselleria will be as agile as possible so that we can begin the processing of the corresponding administrative files, by the City Council, for the contracting of the construction works. We are very happy to have taken another step to offer better educational infrastructure (we must remember that the second school construction works will start this year) for our youngest students in Gran Alacant.
For example, we plan to improve the Gran Alacant sports track. We are also studying the best option to be able to build a municipal building in Gran Alacant to be the Municipal Offices, in which it can be accessed by the public to the services of registration, employment, social services, culture, education, etc. In addition, we have finally received the resolution of a grant to remodel the medical office of Gran Alacant, making it more accessible and comfortable, both for the users and for the professionals who work there. These are the projects we have in mind for the year 2019 in Gran Alacant. They can be very ambitious, but I firmly believe that it is very necessary to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Gran Alacant. Yolanda Seva RuĂz Major of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant
The second news is even better. The City Council, after more than 8 years, has collected the historical debt that had the company MASA (Monte y Mar),

Barry’s Bits of News How interesting to see the reply last month to my continued moaning about the weeds. They are at last going to do something about it. More gardeners are to be employed. Thank you Town hall. ********* Just something a little different this month. When most of us moved out here to live, one of the biggest fears was, what will happen if I am taken ill in this country. This also applies to those who also holiday here, or have holiday homes in the area, having been fortunate enough not to have been taken ill. I can only speak about how good the service at the Elche General hospital has been experienced with family, my friends and me. The service we have had has always been excellent; so if you have to go into the local hospital, do not fear for the way you will be treated. To get to the hospital in an emergency, take the road to Santa Pola and turn right to Elche, along a 7km almost straight road, which includes several small roundabouts. At the first big roundabout at Elche, go straight over and then turn left at the next. The hospital is on your right. You can drive into the front at Accident and Emergency, to get your patient help. You will be met inside the door, to point you to the reception counter. There is a waiting room for you in readiness to be called. Reception will place a band on your wrist, signifying how long the waiting time should be. If of course you are in a serious condition, you will bypass the waiting room. You will then be seen and assessed. And may be placed in a bed overnight in A and E observation area, to be taken to the ward in the morning, if necessary. On the wards you will be in a room of just two persons with the two beds and one shower/wash room/toilet. There are no visiting times; friends and relatives are encouraged if possible to stay for 24/7 to help the patient with minimal tasks so as not to have to be ringing for the nurses. The nurse’s nurse and auxiliary are there to fetch and carry. Rooms are cleaned daily, you are supplied with pyjamas or night dresses which are supplied to you daily and food is served 3 times a day + afternoon tea and biscuits.
There are reclining chairs by the beds so that visitors can stay, sit, and even sleep overnight. If surgery is needed the visitor is asked to go to the surgery waiting room on the ground floor to wait whilst the patient is taken off to surgery. When that is completed, the patients name will be called so that you know you can now, go up to the first floor to talk with the surgeon who completed the operation, where they will tell you how surgery went and to inform you of the ward the patient will be moved to. Recently the whole hospital has been, and is being, renovated. At the end of each ward is a modern toilet/wash room for the visitors and on every floor are drinks and food machines. Downstairs on the first floor is an excellent canteen for hot and cold food and drinks, at very competitive prices. If you cannot speak Spanish it is best to take an interpreter with you for hospital visits. If in case of emergency this is not possible, there is plenty of staff able to speak English. If a foreigner goes to a hospital in the uk, the UK pays for the interpreter. Out here this is not the case. The patient pays. Is this where the UK is going wrong!!! ********* If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

14 PLAYERS + A REFEREE TURNED UP FOR THE SESSION ON JANUARY 10TH OF THE GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL. It is so gratifying to see the numbers we are achieving during this winter. On this date last year we were having attendances of around 8 players. Sitting in the elevated stand area at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre, it was very noticeable the improved standard of the players over recent sessions. Yet another newbee attended this week, and yet again, the comments were, “I did not expect it to be like this” saying how quick our players are at these weekly sessions.
Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football
The expansion of our club, continued the next day, with an away fixture at Rojales playing against a team from Quesada. This was our fourth away game at an opponents ground. The picture attached shows our players at the Quesada fixture, which was a bit of a mis match. Some of our players were very much older than the opposition and we had no substitutes, whereas the home side could bring on substitutes as needed with fresher legs during the game. We will learn from this.
On the 21stof January another big step forward for the club was to be taken, when they played their first home competitive fixture against Hondon at their new home venue in Santa Pola. This venue will only be used for our home competitive fixtures. All Thursday sessions will remain at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre.

Indian Head Massage
How are you all feeling this winter? I think it has been milder than the previous year but I am still noticing a lot of my clients have been affected by the seasonal cold & flu bugs. At this time of year an Indian Head massage is always a good treatment choice as it helps with a multitude of common head colds etc. it is a great choice for anyone feeling tired/ fatigue, stressed with work, symptoms of sinus problems, suffer headaches, or those who want to stimulate their hair growth etc. Indian head massage also helps to renew
your energy levels, detoxifying the body by stimulating lymphatic drainage, relieves sleeplessness and insomnia and can boost the memory capabilities.
In India the head massage has been a tradition passed down many families and learned from a very young age, it is a big part of their every day lives, it is a noninvasive treatment and you can stay fully clothed throughout. When we feel stressed our scalp becomes tense and this restricts the blood flow, by having regular head massages it helps stimulate the blood flow to the follicles and loosens up the areas delivering nutrients needed to encourage a healthy mind, stress free head, healthy hair growth and promote some lovely shiny strong hair. It is a very relaxing massage, I prefer to do it with my client lying down but it can also be performed in seated positions. Depending on the persons preference. Ayurvedic practitioners use some carrier oil to work the massage, I personally like

to use some essential oils along with it in my carrier oil as there can be many blends for different problems, to assist hair growth, lessen migraine, relieve eczema symptoms, improve acne problems etc. It is a great way to clear the mind and unblock the airways, following it with a mini facial is a lovely little add on with its own benefits. It soothes the eyes and sinuses by working on the different pressure points around the face and head. Some oils I would use in wanting to stimulate their hairgrowth would be Rosemary, Lavender, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang to name a few. There are also some I would use to massage around the jaw area if the client is prone to cold sores (works a dream) and others I would use for some who experience bad earaches etc. there are many oils for many different things, and its always a good choice to use calming/anti-inflammatory oils for people prone to headaches. Please take advantage of my February offer 30 min Reflexology foot treatment with 30 min Indian head Massage for only 25euros.

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Xorret de Catí – cumbre del Despeñador, Maigmó
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland.
Driving Time: 50mins Walking Time: 3 hours Google maps directions: Aparcamiento Hotel Xorret de Catí, 03420 Castalla, Alicante, Espanja
way back. There are lots of marked routes in the area.
With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and the possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from the top of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take lots of pictures on our hikes. The route starts near the hotel in Xorret de Catí. There should be space in the parking lot. Walk a little bit main road downhill from the hotel and to your right side you’ll soon see the PR-CV 28 sign uphill. That’s where our route starts. Remember that the route is indicated with the white and yellow = mark. You are following route PR-CV 28. You go up to the peak and down the same way. If you want to you can choose different
32
If you want to cheat a little bit (half the route) drive past the hotel until you reach “refugios” area to your left side. Park the car to the side of the road. Only personnel are allowed to park to the service area (even when it doesn’t say that you can’t drive there). When we visited the gate was open and we drove to “refugios” area, but were told that the car has to be removed. Which was good, because the gate was closed when we got back! Walk to the dirt road and the route continues straight ahead when the drive way is taking a steep turn to left.
THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Most of the route to the peak (cumbre del Despeñador) was wide (dirt road for car), towards the end it gets more narrow and challenging. There are couple of places that a child would possibly need a little bit of help, but otherwise it was very suitable for children too.
The climate is Mediterranean, slightly continentalized, due to the altitude it has. Rains usually are abundant, mainly in the months of autumn. The snowfalls are predominant in all the mountain range, nevertheless the frosts are frequent at night. At the peak of Maigmó (1,296 m) temperatures can drop below -10 ° C and in summer exceed 30 ° C. The clouds at the summit are usually constant in the winter and autumn months, and therefore facilitate precipitation in this area. It’s green forest area where you can encounter wild boars.
Next month we go on foot again, Our hike took place on a cloudy day. But Hasta luego, even then the hike was enjoyable and Heidi & Olli views very impressive. I read that this is considered one of the most important leisure areas of Alicante and a reference area for the traditional practice of mountain Always when going on hikes check that: sports. There is a climbing wall near the Mirador de Catí. You’ll find the • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged path to the Mirador de Catí after the personnel parking area of the • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it “refugios”. • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) Sopa de Picadillo
Let’s Start!
Hi all, It’s pretty cold outside at the moment, and there is nothing better on a cold day than hot soup with some crispy bread! This month we are going to make a typical soup from Andalucia “Sopa de Picadillo”. Hope you all enjoy it. xxx
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •
FOR THE STOCK: 1/2 hen 1 kilo of cow’s bones 2 ham bones 4 leeks 3 celery stalks 1 medium - sized onion 300 gm of potatoes 1/4 kilo of chickpeas Salt
• • • • •
FOR THE SOUP: 1/4 kilo of rice 150 grams of diced ham 2 boiled egg 1 sprig of mint
Heat 3 litres of water in a cooking pot and add the hen, bones, soaked chickpeas; the peeled and chopped potatoes; half the peeled and chopped onion; the sliced carrots and the rest of the cleaned vegetables, cut into large pieces. Cover the pot and allow to cook on a low heat for between 2 to 3 hours. After this time, remove from the heat, take the hen out of stock, de-bone it, de-bone the meat and set aside. Strain the stock through a colander and also set aside. Place the strained stock in a pan and heat, and when it is hot, add the rice and diced ham. Cook on a high heat for 15 minutes, until the rice is ready. Then separate and pour into a soup tureen. For presentation add some mint leaves it will give a lovely taste and some crusty breadcrumbs. Enjoy xxx DO AHEAD: Lamb can be roasted 2 days ahead. Cover and chill. Reheat before continuing. Pull meat from bones in large chunks; discard bones and fat. Place meat and vegetables on a platter. Skim fat from surface of cooking juices in pan. Spoon some cooking juices over lamb and vegetables and serve remainder alongside.

MIRROR CORNER FEBRUARY INVITES US TO FIND THE BALANCE IN OUR LIVES Winter holidays have gone by … January seemed more difficult than expected? … Maybe in February it’s the right time to stop and try to find the right balance in all different aspects of our lives. We just have to decide to do it. It’s an experience to feel that a lifetime and a minute could be just a second…
had just given birth to a precious little baby whose picture was taken and shared with the message. At that very moment I felt a deep movement inside my body, like something ice cold just touched my heart and I couldn’t find the right words to describe it! At this very moment when I felt the death and newborn life just passed each other ... I realized that life seems to flow like music playing with a special rhythm, which you identify with, as yours and you start to move with it. You are living the illusion that that music would be always there for you, letting you draw different choreographies, some of them happier than others.
I will share with you where my inspiration for this article came from … I will share something personal with you. It was the end of last year and I was invited to a dinner party. Sounds, music, long table … it was a gathering of different nationalities and people of all sorts with the same purpose … “ to start something better, willing to love and have faith”. A very nice lady was seated next to me. She started making jokes, which developed into a quite nice conversation after a while. Then as the evening went on she shared something really sad with me… She lost her 45-year-old son tragically 3 years previous from a suddenly discovered illness. In just a few days his perfect life had ended and was gone forever. While this conversation was taking place, a message came to my phone. It was from one of my lovely friends. Her daughter
38
Now and then you get ¨distracted¨ with new events, jobs, relationships but your steps and choreography are always following the same rhythm. Sometimes, you change partner, you change the dance, routine and steps… hoping you can divide the play into different “acts” … first, second, third but the ¨time counter¨ is ON. Sometimes living a faulty perception influenced by culture where materialistic possessions seem to really matter. Your perfect wedding, house (when the mortgage says it’s bank’s but you keep saying it’s yours) and you are trying to be dancing with the flow … The minute I told you, when the past and the present, the life and death crossed each other a deep impression occurred inside me. It didn’t prevent me from enjoying the evening but it made me realize the uncertainty of life. Our surroundings and possessions are just a projection of ourselves. It’s people who make the biggest difference on us and we can make a difference on them. You may have this or that, but it’s the people around that make you feel ALIVE!

Or, on the other hand you may feel that you spend so much time being self reflective that you sometimes miss out on the experience of living. Don’t feel that your decisions always have to be concrete. If it feels like something isn’t working for you, make the change! Just like accomplishing any goal in life, it takes time and effort to overcome your daily patterns and create new ones. If you stay on track, set goals, plans tasks, prepare and reflect, then there is a good chance you will create new habits to enjoy a more balanced life going forward! Listen to the rhythm of the waves crushing into the rocks. Remember the normal day. Stop the music and feel what would make some difference! So it’s time to stop and find the right balance in our lives because the person you could have bumped into 2 minutes ago may we’ll be someone of big importance to you. I will always by thankful for that nice lady for “sharing”. She illuminated my soul and many others I hope. She made me realize that each of us can be very important for someone else and believe me; sometimes angels are hidden inside the ones we had not even had a chance to know, or never bumped into … so stop the madness of dancing for a little while! Make time to reassess yourself on daily basis. The most balancing can be divided into 2 categories: internal (mind, heart, health) and external (work, social, family). You may find that you focus more on external things and that you pay very little
Personally I feel, I have someone special to meet yet. Perhaps we meet, perhaps not. Let’s get into 2019 little by little. Gradually becoming conscious of the important things in life! I would like to say big thank you to my family, my friends, my patients and my readers. For being here to remind me what I have to remind you … and the other way back. Our infinite dancing together … BEA XXX I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about, for sure I will have had some real topics related to it during my past work history, I have twenty years of folders to investigate. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you.

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.
Searching for blossoming almond trees and on into the region of Murcia. “All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour... The Japanese look forward to their blossoming cherry trees every year. I wait for the almond trees to start to blossom. Normally my wait is rewarded between the end of January and February. There are a few almond trees here and there but for me the ‘go to’ place is in the Hondon Valley or to be more precise, the hillsides next to the road from La Romana to El Algueña. On the same route you get a chance to see where some the famous Alicante pink marble comes from. I recommend doing this ride either on weekend, national holiday OR time the ride so that you reach the La Romana to El Algueña road during siesta time since the marble is being trucked on the same road and it can get very busy.
Navigate to Aspe with your preferred route. I usually take the CV-84 through Elche. From Aspe you need to continue to Hondon de las Nieves. Either take the busy CV-845 to Hondon de las Nieves or you can take the quieter Camino Viejo de Hondon which turns right from the CV846 to La Romana. From Hondon de las Nieves turn right to La Romana via CV-844. You can either go to the end of the road and continue to La Romana and onwards towards El Algueña via CV-840 and or there is also a small camino, Cami vell de Algueña that follows Rambla Honda. This camino leaves the CV-846 to the left 6.5km after Hondon de las Nieves. If I remember
50
correctly the junction is around the 1km stone marker. The camino then connects with the CV-840 just before the prettiest view of Alto the Algayat. Alto the Algayat is around 600m above sea level (the highest point of the ride and it is all downhill from there) meaning that there are blossoming trees on those terraced hillsides later than some of the lower ones. Continue to El Algueña where workers are making every effort to “unbuild” the mountain, one giant marble stone at a time. From there turn left to CV-841 to El Canton. Another left to the A-9 (Oh yes, we are now in the region of Murcia!) and through El Canton. At the end of that road you will see endless rows of almond trees with pink and white flowers. Take another left towards Hondon de los Frailes and continue through Hondon de

las Nieves back towards Aspe. You can either return from Aspe the same way you came up or if you are like me and need to make a loop you can take N325 to Crevillent and come back that way. Whole ride: https://www.strava.com/ activities/1542771906 125km is quite a long ride. So there is also nice 40km route if you put your bike in a car and drive to Hondon de Las Nieves and start your ride from there. The shorter route takes the small camino of Rambla Honda, Cami vell de Algueña.
Few things to keep in mind: • Always have something to drink with you and for a bit longer rides maybe a banana or muesli-bar • Always have a little money if you need to stop to buy food or drink • Take the phone with you • Many of the small cafés are closed on Mondays • And the most important: Wave the fellow cyclists”
Note: On the ride below I turned left one junction too early and had to turn around when the tarmac ended and try again. So be aware there are many small roads in this area, a bit of pre-planning helps as always. Small loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/1431314514

DRAMA IN A TEACUP The pain in his ankle was easing but it still troubled Tony as he tried to put as much distance as he could, between himself and the car wreck. He knew Pippa was pretty much unhurt as she lay in the back of the car and although he hesitated for just a moment, he knew it was the right move to leave her there. They had been working together to bring her father into the limelight. Pippa wanted to give him a shock and bring the police to their door. Her father had been treating her mother really badly for years and now he was beginning to set his eyes on Pippa and although her mother had managed to put a fair bit of money away, there was no way of escaping her husband’s clutches.
Pippa‘s father was bad news. He was mixed up in all sorts of underhand deals but had so far, not been subjected to much attention by the police. It was one of these deals that had brought Tony onto the scene. His parents owned a Pawn Shop and it became a favourite for money laundering, by the people who worked for Pippa’s father. It was when the couple said they didn’t want to take any more business from Pippa’s father that the trouble started. It quickly escalated from just a few broken windows, to personal threats. Tony had been desperate to find a way out for his parents and when he met Pippa at a mutual friend’s house and she told him her story, they agreed to work together to solve both of their problems. The idea of a kidnapping was Tony’s. He knew of an abandoned car that was still driveable. He would bundle her into the back and drive off into the night. She knew that Mrs Brown, the street “curtain twitcher” would see them, and her mother, who knew the plan, would “find” the note. They would lay low for a few days while the police investigated and then Pippa would miraculously appear at the side of some quiet road with no idea of who had taken her. Her father would be forever grateful and quick to call off the

hunt for her abductor, believing it to be one of his rivals. He would, however, be very careful to avoid bringing the police to his door again. The car accident had changed everything. The agreement had been that if anything went wrong, so long as she was OK, Tony would leave her and she would say that she had no idea what had happened. Her father would still get the shock treatment and if she played it right, the outcome would be the same. And so it was that Tony was making his way, alone, down the steep bank towards the town where he would have refuelled the car. He rested for a moment t at the tree-line, taking off the coveralls and gloves that had prevented evidence being left in the car. They fitted easily into his back pack and he quickly made his way to the bus station. He was hardly limping at all as he walked into the café to find something to eat before the next bus arrived. It was a ninety minute wait which seemed like an eternity, but by the end of the day he was home and so was Pippa. Her parents were delighted that she was safe and apart from the brief meeting at the friend’s house, there was nothing to connect Tony and Pippa. Pippa’s family could not avoid the newspaper coverage and her father actually welcomed it. Perhaps he was unlucky then, that someone recognised as stolen property, the heavy gold chain he was wearing in the paparazzi photographs and that the police took him away to relentlessly investigate the depth and breadth of his illicit activities. His absence was quickly seized upon by his rivals, who had no need for a Pawn Shop. The identity of the kidnapper was never resolved and once the newspapers had finished raking through the embers of the story, Tony and Pippa were able to rise above the turmoil and look forward to a brighter future.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Birthday Party at Multiaventura Elche
Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to share the fun that Ashlee and her friends had last December at Ashlee´s 9th Birthday Party in Multiaventura Elche. Ashlee had already been here on a couple of school trips and you may have heard of it, or seen the adverts and wondered what it was like. It is fairly easy to find, well signposted and only took around 20 minutes by car. As this was my first visit, I really wasn´t sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised
groups and increase in both difficulty and distance from the ground. The Childrens circuit is for ages 4+, the Junior circuit is for ages 6+, the Cadet circuit is for ages 10+ and the Senior circuits (medium, advanced and extreme) are for 12+. To traverse them takes between 40 and 90 minutes. Once everyone had arrived, the monitors took the kids outside the equipment room where all the necessary personal safety equipment they needed was laid out individually on the ground. They were shown how to put it all on and had a laugh as they pulled on their hair nets, helmets and harnesses. NOTE I was advised in advance that the children would need “gardening” style gloves, that can be bought in advance at the
at the amount of palm trees. Throughout them and at different heights you can see various “bridges” that use hanging sections of tree trunks, ropes, planks and various other obstacles that need to be navigated to move from one section to another. There are 6 different “circuits” that are tailored to different age/height/weight

Chinese shops or they are available there for €2.50 a pair. Once the monitors were happy that all the kids had their equipment
Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE
Out & About with Star & Ashlee on correctly, they went off to start the Junior Circuit. The monitors explained how they needed to clip their harnesses onto the safety lines
above each activity and how they needed to move one clip at a time from one line to the next in between each of the different bridge sections. The kids really enjoyed trying to traverse the different obstacles and bridges and were laughing, helping and encouraging each other. The final part of the circuit had them flying down a short, low zip line which they all loved. The next activity that Ashlee had chosen was the boating lake, after removing their safety equipment, the monitors took them to the lake, explaned the rules and showed them how to paddle the boats. As there were 10 children, the monitors asked them to split into 2 groups so there were 5 children in each boat. They had a lot of fun paddling themselves around the islands trying to spot fish and figuring out how to make the boats go the way they wanted!! Lunch was well organised as each of Ashlee´s friends had chosen what they wanted at the beginning of the day, from the menu we had previously selected and the monitiors made sure that they all had
the correct meals. After that it was onto the Electric buggies, as there are only 4 buggies, the kids went in two groups of 3 and one of 4 and those that weren´t driving got to play on the bouncy castle.
Additional activities include archery, small electric cars and a 2,500 sq. metre laser gun camp. The impressive 22 metre high Triaction Tower has 3 different ways to climb up and 2 different ways down …... a 220 metre long giant zip line through the trees or a 20 metre free fall!!! Multiaventura is open all year round, their website is available in English or Spanish www.multiaventuraelche.com and you can contact them on 965 995 012. Until next time Star and Ashlee xxx

Santa Pola Half Marathon 2019 as experienced by Geoff Young
SANTA POLA HALF MARATHON 2019
I
ran my first half marathon in 1981 (The first Great North Run-GNR) which attracted a field of 12,000 runners. As the years went by the demand for places increased and so the numbers of participants rose to it’s current level of approximately 55,000 making it the largest half marathon in the world. In the early years it was fun but I stopped running it because it became too big. There were times when you could expect to walk large parts of the course due to the vast number of people taking part. About 10 years ago, I discovered to my surprise that Santa Pola staged a half Marathon every January, so wanting to be involved with my new local community, I entered. What a delight. The entry cost was 20% of GNR at Euro13, the number of participants was 8000, the administration was excellent, the course is flat, hugging the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, with thousands of spectators lining the streets to cheer on the athletes. I found out afterwards this was about the 21st time the event had been staged and was generally regarded as being one of the best half marathons in Spain, if not Europe. I was hooked from day one and running the Santa Pola Half Marathon is upmost in the “Must Do” list every year. One of the benefits of running in January, apart from the weather not being too hot, is the need to train over the winter period. It is still possible to enjoy Christmas and New Year celebrations but to prepare properly, there is an element of abstinence required. You don’t need the New Year’s resolutions of “This year I am going to the gym”, I am going to get fit”, or “I need to lose weight” because you are doing all these things anyway as part of your training and there is no guilt trip at the end of January when you stop it all, well some of it.
66
This year the run was held on the third Sunday of January, and Santa Pola, as it does every year, pulls out all the stops to make this a first rate event for competitors and spectators alike. A big thanks goes out to all those involved in the organisation and sponsorship of the event especially Santa Pola Ayuntamiento, Educanova Consultores S.L. and Empresa White go for it.
There is a buzz about the place on race day with people visiting from all over Spain to enjoy the occasion. Along the route thousands of people line the streets to shout and encourage the competitors. I remember one year I was running alongside the Castle when the crowd was shouting “Animo” which I thought was “animal”, meaning, they thought I was a beast, to which I punched the air letting out a large growl saying “yeahhh”. Every time they shouted “Animo” I responded with a growling Yeahhh. It was only after I finished that I was told that Animo was an encouragement roughly translated to “Keep Going”, but I preferred my version of the saying. I still do.

Santa Pola Half Marathon 2019 as experienced by Geoff Young
Music is a constant back drop along the route as many bands, (Rock, Metal, percussive, etc) play at regular intervals, and in some places, local residents bring their HiFi’s into the streets to blast out music to add a little more atmosphere to the event.
The weather on Sunday was ideal for running in and the rain kept away until after the run. Along the route we met other Brits, Lithuanians, a Malaysian, Norwegians and many more nationalities, all of whom were cheered along the way by the crowd. The winner of this year’s run was Hassane Ahouchar from Morocco. The first female competitor to finish was Abbeche Mulugeta Gela finishing 11th overall. There were 3986 competitors from 22 countries (including Malaysia, Algeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Mexico, Antigua to name a few). The oldest male competitor being 75 year old Angel Heras Miguel (finishing 3143 in 2 hours and 15 minutes) and the oldest female competitor was 68 year old Trinidad Ayala Alvarado (finishing 2257 in 1 hour and57 minutes). The youngest competitors were 18 year old Inma Llorca Pieddecausa (female) and 18 year old Adrian Martinez Tenza (male) who finished 1152 and 324 respectively.
advantage of the good weather here in Gran Alacant to run many miles in preparation for the race. John is an experienced runner and has an in-built ability to run at a steady pace over a long distance, and having
determined a nominal finishing time, we ran the course at almost equal split times and completed the course in 2 hours and 18 minutes, with an overall finish position of 3239 and 3240, but our positions in our respective age categories was 24th (GY over 65) and 73rd (JC over 60). 10 years ago when I was younger and fitter I thought I had a good chance of doing well in my age category, but the winner of my age category that year ran a faster time than I was able to run when I was in my 20’s. So much for my expectations of finishing on the podium. Now I am pleased to get round in one piece but I still respond to shouts of “Animo” and with that I will be planning for next years half marathon.
As for me, I was joined from the UK by my friend and running partner, John Curry (JC). John rounded of his training in the cold of the UK whereas I was able to take READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTHCARABASSI AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com CENTRE

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
BLACK REDSTART
Everybody knows the House Sparrow, you probably have them around your house or you encounter them when you're having a meal at an open air restaurant, where they attempt to look as cute as possible in order to attract a stray crumb, or recklessly dive-bomb your table at the risk of a good swatting. You can't miss their cheerful/ irritating (delete as appropriate) calls when the sun comes up every morning, and you're probably so used to the sound that you hardly notice it any more. But those who listen with a little more care might have noticed that amidst the Sparrow overture each morning, there is another sound which has only been present from around the end of October. It's a sort of whistle followed by a harsh note - “whee, chack” it goes, sometimes with a stuttering series of chacks, and you might wonder what kind of sparrow is making that noise. And if you look carefully, you'll see that the sound is coming from a slightly larger and far tidier bird than the usual scruffy sparrow. This is the Black Redstart, which is a common winter visitor to our area, and which seems to appreciate the concrete jungles of our urbanisations. Unlike the sparrows, their diet is specialised towards insects, grubs
74
and the occasional seeds, which is why we don't get Black Redstarts mooching around cafe tables. They tend to sit high up on our buildings and observe ll the goings-on down below, taking frequent flights to catch passing insects, and many of our urbanisation birds will spend the day feeding in the Clot, returning in the evening as they go to roost. At first glance, it looks like a very dull bird, but if you look carefully it has a bright orange-red tail, which it flutters continuously when at rest. The rest of the bird is a smoky-grey colour, which in the male birds will gradually wear down to give it a black face-mask and chest, and lighter-coloured wings like the example in my photograph. For breeding purposes, the Black Redstart used to specialise in remote rocky areas, but after the Second World War in the UK they thrived in bomb site and quarry areas. They have since shown a preference for industrial areas, particularly those which have become somewhat run-down, and also surprisingly enough they seem to like nuclear power stations! Never very common back in Britain, there are probably fewer than 100 breeding pairs – the birds that we see here in Gran Alacant and elsewhere are from the much larger Central European population. They will be gone from our area by the end of March, although a few remain in higher and more northerly areas of the Iberian peninsula. Their Spanish name is Collirojo Tizon. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. “La grandeza de una nación y su progreso moral puedan ser juzgados por la manera en que trata a sus animales”. Gandhi Hi, I’m Jemma, In the coming months I am going to share what I continue to learn from animals through my work as a volunteer at SAT www.satanimalrescue.com and at the Easy Horse Rescue Centre www.easyhorsecare. net. I
have always had great love, respect, affinity and a special rapport with animals. Recently when I went past a cow being roughly hoarded up onto the ‘knackers van‘ for slaughter I wept uncontrollably for a day ... but that doesn’t help the cow or me! What I can do though is write in her honour what I have learnt in my life from animals. Life is a process, a becoming, it is not fixed and definite and animals can help us to realise this. They are amazing, sentient, gracious beings that can teach us so much if we watch and listen. I read somewhere that animals help us ‘reveal our very humanity. There is still so much unkindness and ignorance in the way they are treated by us humans, but I truly believe as in the quote above that the way we treat our animals is indicative of the state of our evolution. One of the many things I learnt from the work of Monty Roberts (probably the most well known of natural horsemanship) is that the first few moments of contact with a horse are vital for all further connection and work you share with that horse, and this can be applied to both animals and humans.
78
Because animals do not physically talk to us (though of course they do communicate to us in many ways, the understanding and learning of this a never ending skill in itself) and therefore do not meet us with words, we have the opportunity to pause and assess how we feel internally before we make that first contact so as to choose what we bring to it, and , if we choose make it meaningful and special. One of the many things that walking the dogs at SATs gives me is that it presents a space to practice mindfulness. Most of you will have heard of this up and coming practice and that this is now beginning to be taught in schools. The NHS now states on their website that paying more attention to our thoughts, feelings and world around us can improve our mental health. If you would like more information I recommend to try Ruby Wax’s funny and insightful book ‘ A mindfulness guide to a frazzled world. ‘ Mindful practice comes in on many levels, but basically it helps us to become more conscious of who/where/how we are, moment by moment. With regular practice I believe that we become more able to live life with greater awareness, have more control over our thoughts and get less caught up in them, hence life itself becomes so much more vital, present and precious... ... I bring my attention to my feet and become aware of the ground beneath my feet, the feel of my socks and shoes, the ground… I consciously feel the way I place my feet on the ground and how one foot follows the other. Then I am reminded of the dog on the lead and I can become more aware of him, at the same time keeping some awareness on my walking. Then there is the beautiful views, the feel of the air, the sounds and smells around, the other walkers and dogs, cars and farm machinery, birds… to name but a few things!

Animals as Teachers By Jemma
The skill is to play with the focus of one thing to another while at the same time maintaining a broad awareness of all the other things, and not forgetting that the most important part is maintaining one’s own and the dogs safety and well being as well as providing the dog and of course yourself with as enjoyable and stimulating an experience as you can. A life’s work and so much more fun with an animal … Please get in touch with SAT or Easy Houre if you are interested in volunteering in any way. Jemma x

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY It has been a cold start to 2019 and as mentioned in a previous article the early morning frosts have arrived! In a normal year we can have delays for up to one or one and a half hours perhaps on a couple of days. However, this year has seen most of our arranged golf days delayed – on one occasion by three hours !!!These have not deterred our hardy group but hopefully these will pass by soon and by the time you read this our arrangements will be back to normal. The new rules have been implemented and we have to say without too much contraversy. Presently as a Society we are not following the “Out of Bounds” recommendation (it should be borne in mind that this is not a rule change as such but ,as said, it is a recommendation), preferring the historic method of playing a provisional ball.Otherwise all has gone smoothly. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
FEBRUARY: THE MONTH OF LOVE (AND NOISE) February is the month of love, also for animals. Lots of bird and mammal species get “married” in February. The reason for this is to make the newborns arrive in spring, when weather is getting better, and there is a lot of food available.
So, during February nights, cats never have a rest: females in season meow all the time, tomcats fight, and then, more noise during the mate.
On the other hand there are other species which are able to reproduce all year round, such as dogs, some parrots, and... Ticks and fleas. Even the coldest temperatures in winter are warm enough to make our pets have parasites (of course, in a smaller number than in summer). In this area, the most indiscreet animals when they are “in love” are cats and birds. Long winter nights are the best moment to listen fights and loud meows from tomcats and queens in season. Tomcats, at this moment, are extremely territorial. Fights between males are very common, and some of them may be very violent, producing serious injuries. Tomcats rarely attack females, but it’s a common thing they attack neutered males. For this reason we recommend to keep cats indoors during winter nights. Cats mate is not what you call romantic in our opinion: shouts, meows and bites, and all finished in 5 minutes. But they are extremely effective since ovulation happens during the mate, so practically every mate ends in pregnancy.
86
In case of wild birds the thing is similar (despite their vocalizations are much nicer than cats ones). We can listen early in the morning mockingbirds and blackbirds, and the rest of the day European serins, greenfinches and goldfinches singing. All
of them sing for delimiting their territories. February is a moment of sexual activity also for lots of water birds we can see at El Clot, Las Salinas or El Hondo. If we want to watch the spectacular birds courtship, it’s important to remember not to annoy them in such a critical moment. So, during this month we will enjoy birds singing, and in March the first chicks will appear. In the same way, we will “enjoy” cats “singing”, and pretty soon we will start “enjoying” kittens.
