We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Untidy GA Hi Ged & Lou, Hope your both well. Following on from my previous e-mail the state of the roads are getting worse! I appreciate the last few months have been hard on everyone. The road up from Mercadona is getting worse by the week, shrubs and bushes are now growing 2-3 feet out into the road making the road extremely dangerous. Only last week two cyclists were involved in accidents because they had to swerve out into the road and were hit by cars. What makes it even more galling is as I cycle, through a Santa Pola I watch the council workers strimming 1/2 weeds in the pavement. I spoke to a council worker in GA last week and explained the problem but still no joy. This is beyond a joke now and wonder why the council have not dealt with it.
I think that thanks to everyone’s effort we have done a great job all together and that’s why today Gran Alacant is a safe area. Now, we are returning to “normality” in all aspects but it takes time and for this reason, I would like to ask the residents of Gran Alacant to be a little patient. We are aware there is currently a deficit in this regard and work is now being carried out after the last two exceptional months, which were devoted to disinfection tasks, and in addition to that this year has been especially rainy which caused the vegetation to grow with a special force….Residents can now see that cleaning, gardening and pruning activities have been carried out in multiple locations in Gran Alacant such as Avda. Mediterraneo, Avda. Polonoa, Noruega and Monte de Santa Pola.
Sorry to be a pain but you did say that you would mention it to the GA councillor. Thanks Ash Q: Overhanging trees Hi Ged & Lou, Can you please ask about getting the trees cut back on Avda. Mediterraneo from the Consum roundabout all the way to post office roundabout, worst part is after the curve as the road is narrowed there. I cycle up the hill & have seen a couple of near misses as the cyclists have to move into the car lane to pass the trees hanging into the road. Thanks Gary Answer from GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: In the last few months our priority has been focused on health and safety with numerous disinfections to fight the virus.

Life Returns It’s nice to see the world here is slowly returning. The Taylor Wimpey site is moving at a pace. Shame their cement mixer wagons are causing damage leaving their site, hitting the give way sign!
hundreds of shrubs, tiny things about 6 inches tall. Some survived very well, others did not, and we think a few were taken to be used elsewhere (cough cough). Look at the picture to see how well many of the tiny shrubs have survived to give a wonderful splash of colour most of the way along the fence. TREMOR Another small earth tremor on the evening of June 14th. We have had a few of these just lately.
Kind Regards, David King Social Distancing
BEACH June 15th we were back on the beaches and in the sea. It has seemed a long time to have to wait this year. A bit disappointing that the beach had not had much preparation in the days and weeks after the complete lock-down. BEWARE OF THE GREEN LINE
Thank you for sending in your picture David
BARRYS BITS OF NEWS
With all of the problems that the lock-down has brought to us all. Lets us start with a success story. BUSHES A few years back, about 7 years, we reported that the Town Hall had some money they could spend, money given from central government to be used for a specific purpose.
Seems Arenales now have introduced new parking restrictions with max. of 4 hours. Thank you David King for sending in your photo. SCRUFFY I think that the above questions sum up most of Gran Alacant at the moment, in that, the whole urbanisation is looking rather scruffy with so much garden work very absent at the moment. Everywhere you look it is all getting rather untidy and neglected.
It was decided to upgrade the area outside the Clot El Galvaney. It started with a wooden fence running the whole side of the protected area. Then they planted

After I write this, I got hold of photos from the Town Hall with pictures of the work they are carrying out which you can see on the previous page.. Maybe my comments are a bit hasty and we have to wait for them to get around to all of the eyesores.

Don’t throw it away! We need it! We would like to request that while everyone is turning out long forgotten corners of rooms and cupboards, that if you find anything suitable that you are prepared to give up for a good cause, please consider tombola prizes for our charity night in September being held for Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity. If you need anything out of your way, we will be grateful for your help. Please leave your donations at LOUNGED BAR, MASA SQUARE Thank you, Stuart & Sheila xxx RUBBISH ……….AGAIN More and more and more, rubbish. We cannot blame the holiday makers as they were not here yet. Maybe the capacity of number of bins needs increasing. In saying that, if people stopped putting their rubbish on the floor instead of in the bin, that may help.
GOOD NEWS a positive comment from Angie at Aquarius Hi Barry could we mention in Barry's bits that us business owners do not know of anyone who has or had covid 19 none of our suppliers know of anyone and none of our customers know of anyone. Can we all give ourselves a pat on the back for sticking to the guidelines and print something positive Thanks, Angie x

GRAFFITI I have mentioned before about this wall of graffiti on Mediterraneo by the clot. What an eyesore since August 2017, nearly three years it has been like this. Surely some responsible person could get a tin of paint and sort it.
MOORS AND CHRISTIANS The City Council of Santa Pola has announced the suspension of the Moors and Christians festivals and those of the Virgin of Loreto due to the health and social crisis caused by the covid-19. In a statement, from the Town Hall they have indicated that "after several meetings with the Cultural Celebration Association of Moors and Christians of Santa Pola and the Unió de Festers, these two festive entities have communicated to the Department the decision to cancel the acts that Both entities have been organizing. BUILDING WORK For those who have holiday homes out here and read this magazine on the internet, there is still a massive amount of building work taking place. One massive site has been acquired by Taylor Wimpey who are building on the left as you go down the beach hill. The next site is the continuing of the MASA

building opposite the Gabi Market. Again a massive area of land, so in both cases many more properties being built. Hopefully more people moving out here to make use of all of our businesses.
Let us all hope that things improve with the virus so we can all get back to near normal. I know, however, that many of us are very wary about the possible numbers of visitors coming in from other areas of Spain and of course from other countries. Stay safe

HOLISTIC FOOD LIVING
Do you already live a Holistic lifestyle but feel like something is missing? Do you want to live a more natural, positive, creative and balanced life but you don’t know where to start? Do you find yourself getting caught up in all the celeb magazines with all their air brushed photos and all their fad diet articles on how to achieve that bikini body in 4 weeks and find it more confusing than ever? It’s not about living everyday depriving yourself from all the little moments that make your life enjoyable. It is about living whole, bringing with it a more mindful and balanced lifestyle. I always say tap into your natural hunger signals and fill your vehicle with some good wholesome produce. Look after your most important vehicle and it will run effectively. Eat good foods, move your body daily and drink the water. START WITH THE WATER So when and how much water are we supposed to drink? There are lots of mixed information out there regarding this, most say aim for 2 litres daily but that aside I also know professionals that say not everyone needs this amount, that it can depend on the individual, so an easy rule of thumb would be to go with your own bodies balance and thirst but aim for making it your daily routine, spaced out throughout your day.
The right time to drink water would be: • 1 glass when you wake up to aid cleansing and kick starting the body • 1 glass before every meal to help with your digestion • 1 glass before a shower if you suffer from high blood pressure • 1 glass before bed to keep yourself hydrated as your body cleanses And add another 2 or 3 throughout your day for after your daily exercise or whilst you work, and definitely after a massage or body treatment to help flush out they toxins. ONTO THE FOOD Food is medicine and superfoods are the most delicious and best ones. Try by incorporating them into your daily diet. The natural fresh superfoods have a powerful way of packing your body with health benefits, from improving your immune system to increasing your energy levels, boosting feel good factors and promoting more restful night sleep. Not all “super” heroes wear capes as they say and we all know that healthy nutrition plays an essential role in our health and wellbeing. Don’t give up your guilty pleasures, those who know me know that I don’t do diets especially the “fad” kind, guaranteed if you try one another will follow shortly after. Life is more about creating the healthy balance and by incorporating a lot of these foods into your daily life the need for your guilty pleasures lessen. Start by implementing superfoods into your diet.

EXPERTS REVEAL HOW TO HANDLE HAY FEVER AS LOCKDOWN LIFTS
As the weather continues to hot up, and the easing of lockdown restrictions allow us to enjoy the great outdoors once more, it can be a tricky time for allergy sufferers. daily disposable lenses during the summer months.’
High pollen counts are bad news for hay fever sufferers who often succumb to symptoms such as sneezing, headaches, itchy eyes and even inflamed ears. Now that we are allowed out more for exercise, with hiking and mountain biking being encouraged, this is becoming more of an issue. Plus, as temperatures increase and windows are open and gardens being enjoyed, hay fever can affect us at home as well! As well as sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, hay fever can also be particularly problematic for contact lens wearers. The director of Specsavers Ópticas Javea and Calpe, Louise Stone says: ‘Hay fever sufferers who wear contact lenses may notice the vision through their lenses can appear smeary and eyes can generally feel uncomfortable. ‘However, there are some things contact lens wearers can try to help reduce the irritation. Contact lens-friendly eye drops can help to calm down any itchiness, and wearing prescription glasses (particularly wraparound sunglasses) can prevent pollen from getting into your eyes. Those suffering with hay fever could also try
34
‘To avoid irritation, try putting a balm like Vaseline around the nose to trap pollen, and vacuum and dust your home regularly, or you can try over-the-counter allergy relief. Staying inside when the pollen count is high will also help to avoid irritation, and showering and changing your clothes when you get home will help to remove pollen from skin and hair,’ advises Louise. It is also important to note that, while a runny nose is a common symptom for allergy sufferers, for a few people it has also been a reported symptom of coronavirus*. If you are experiencing any of the other symptoms, such as a dry cough, fever or tiredness, make sure that you selfquarantine and seek medical advice. It is normal for hay fever sufferers to have red, itchy and watery eyes, which is actually a form of allergic conjunctivitis. Coronavirus can cause conjunctivitis but it is rare, occurring in only about 1-3% of affected people. Conjunctivitis associated with coronavirus tends to occur in the later stages of the disease and alongside more common symptoms such as a continuous cough and fever. If you have none of the other symptoms associated with coronavirus it is unlikely that it is the cause of your conjunctivitis.

Q
: How to deal with teenage tantrums?
One minute my daughter is happily chatting with her best friend on the phone and the next minute she might be stomping out of the room, just because I asked her to complete her homework or help me with house chores. Her mood swings can be totally unpredictable!
A
: As parents we have often been on the edge of despair when we find ourselves in desperate situations, especially when we ask our teenagers to do something and they constantly ignore us. Adolescence is a kind of regression where our children return to their early childhood when tantrums were the order of the day. We need to learn to deal with the new stages our teenagers are going through. Adolescence is a hard stage for young people, but also for their parents. Sudden changes in mood are one of the most common signs of rebellion in adolescence. Mood changes arise from hormonal changes that make young people more sensitive emotionally. Knowing the signs of rebellion in adolescence and knowing how to act against them will help you cope with
48
the situation. Adolescence is also an important stage in individual growth, which creates the basis to define our identity. In this sense, many families do not usually accept - or do so reluctantly - this process of independence in adolescence, considering children still children. Instead, it is more common that the teenager will start to feel a "family disconnection". It is unavoidable and we cannot stop their path of self-reliance or autonomy. Although it is also true that sometimes they become rebellious teenagers. Often, a teenager can respond indifferently to our displays of affection, or react with anger to an innocent joke. They can also get depressed by things as simple as a pimple on their face. It is important to know how to handle these situations so that we can address these attitudes, without being permissive about any wrongdoing and maintaining our position as an authority figure in the home. It's in this context that most conflicts between adolescents and their family begin. First of all, let's think that if we have a positive relationship with them, it will be easier to be a positive influence for them (also negative if we don't do it well). Also note that if we don't have it, we will always have the opportunity to build it. To do this, it’s essential that we know the particularities and interests of them as an individual as this will help is to be able to connect with them. In other words, we are going to have to step into their world and see situations from their perspective. *Set limits: It's necessary that family life is a series of rules that need to be respected.
It's also important that there are consequences when these rules are broken. *Educate: Invest time and energy to improve the education of your children. If we do this, the chances of channeling the situation increase considerably. *Be firm: in your decisions, and do not hesitate to maintain an honest lifestyle with what we are preaching. We must set an example and make them the advantages of behaving well. *Avoid comparisons: Constantly comparing them with siblings or friends can damage self-image and make the situation worse. *Avoid unnecessary pressures: Teenagers have to have their own goals that adults should help to create. However, we should not pressure them to meet these goals. *Give them space: Unlike the other signs of rebellion in adolescence, this one in particular is the one that most affects parents and also the one that we least understand. At this stage, adolescents are in full pursuit of independence and identity, leaving behind the behaviours that attach them to their parents. Teenagers will often reject our presence when they are with their circle of friends. One thing we must understand about this is that this attitude does not mean that we have lost their love and respect, or that they hate us. It's because they do not want their peers to think they are insecure, they want to show a level of maturity.
Q
: Can love come later? I fell in love with a great guy and we get on really well. The problem is he broke up with his girlfriend 3 years ago and still can't get over the break-up. He tells me he enjoys my company and being with me, our sex life is great, but he is still struggling to get over his previous relationship. Should I give him more time? Can love come later? Or am I wasting my time with this guy?
A
: Sometimes the love of your life comes after the mistake of your life. This is a statement that we hear often. But do we agree with it? Love comes when it comes. That's the truth. Each stage in life is different and it's not the same to love at 15 years old than it is at 30 or 50. Love is a feeling that is not restricted
by age. However, there can be a difference in what we understand as love. The famous phrase: "true love comes after a wrong love" can be understood better when we realise that love can be different at various stages in our life There is no wrong love, just different. Love knows how to coexist with what it dislikes. Love manages to turn displeasure into an anecdote on the path of love. If there is wrong love, it is because we confuse love with attraction. The attraction is phenomenal, it's the first feeling that tells us that we can love. However, it can also remain a desire that doesn't turn into real love. After we have left a relationship that for any reason didn't work, we need time to heal from it. We have to turn the page so that we can start another stage in our life. This will enable us to be with another person and to find new love. People are not bad or good, but different. We all want to find the love of our life and it can come after a disappointment (disappointment means error) and we leave behind (without even remembering) the person with whom we cannot get along. Life has many relationships and we continually learn what we really like from them and what makes us feel good. If we are in tune with ourselves then we are able to be in tune with the love of our life. Then we can say: "love has come to us" and we will live it with passion, attraction and ... love. Quickly moving away from wrong love is necessary. The important thing is not to close ourselves off from love just because we have had a bad experience. So, enjoy loving and enjoy being loved.

We may still be suffering from Lockdown but Club Atletismo in Santa Pola brought forward a marvelous idea to keep people fit and active during these difficult times. They created a very simple concept of hosting a virtual 5km and 10km running event. Basically entries were open to anybody from May until 13 June with a requirement to run or walk either 5km or 10km between 18 - 21 June anywhere in the world and then post your times to their website where they would collate the data and publish the results. It wasn't a race or a competition, rather it was an opportunity to get outdoors and exercise and all the time observing safety and social distancing. The entry fee was a nominal 6 euro which was to be given to a local charity, Caritas Santa Pola, to alleviate the most basic needs of those affected by the pandemic. Yours truly is firmly anchored in the UK but I should be in Gran Alacant at the moment, so I pitched this offer to my running buddies in the UK as well as the Gran Alacant Runners and between us we put together a team of 13, all under the heading of Gran Alacant Runners. We had 8 from the UK and 5 from within Gran Alacant, which I think is an outstanding turnout. 4 of the UK runners have already competed in the annual Santa Pola half marathon, with 3 of those intending to compete in this event in January 2021, assuming it gets the go ahead. There are prizes for the largest teams and we await confirmation of whether we qualify under this heading. Having run in and around Santa Pola I know it is a very flat terrain and so if I was going to compare myself with someone running locally in Santa Pola, then running round the hilly terrain of County Durham was going to put me at a distinct disadvantage, so I advised the UK group to find a relatively

flat course to run around, which we did. I have to admit, I found it thoroughly enjoyable, but running 10km by yourself is difficult in parts as it requires a lot of mental strength to maintain a good pace whereas if you are running with a group in an event there is always someone to chase down and keep you going. A big thank you to Club Atletismo and all the organisers for the concept and execution of the event and a big thanks to my virtual running buddies of the GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS (5th club in classification - well done!!!). Lets us hope the next event can be mass participation and not virtual. If anyone is interested in getting involved with running locally in Gran Alacant, please feel free to contact me WhatsApp Geoff 0044 / 747 685 1356 or talk to Philippe at GA Homefinders. For anyone who has never done this before but would like to know where or how to start running check out the Couch to 5km programme on the Internet where you will find tips and training programmes to get you started.

ALLERGY MATTERS IN PETS
One of the most common and frustrating problems in pets are probably the allergies. Their diagnosis must be very specific, and treatments are usually chronic all year round and last for years. Traditional treatments such as steroids are cheap but have lots of side effects. Modern treatments are much more effective and safer, but they are expensive, especially in case of large dogs. In this article we would like to help the owners to keep under control, if possible, allergic problems in their pets, reducing the requirements of medicines or without using any medicine at all.
The two main sources of allergic problems are mites and pollen. MITES: dust mites and storage mites. All of them require warm temperatures and humidity for their development, and they usually feed on fats and proteins. Dust ones are often found on pillows, mattresses, and pets carpets and beds. Storage ones are commonly found in bags of pet dry food. It’s also easy to find them in bathrooms and kitchens, because of their optimum temperature and humidity. There are, for example, cats which suffer from crisis of asthma (which is also an allergic condition) only when they get into the bathroom, or only when they climb to the sofa, in both cases probably because of the high concentration of mites at those places. What can we do? We can machine wash warm (60ºC) pillows and carpets, and use a vacuum cleaner at least once a week; not recommendable to clean the dust when the animal is present, and better to use a wet cloth instead of a feather duster. It’s also to keep dry food in hermetical bags and in the fridge if possible, and apart from any source of humidity, because it helps the mites to develop.
62
POLLEN: In comparison with mites, pollen is seasonal (while mites appear all year round), which is an advantage, but on the other hand pollen is extremely difficult to eliminate from the environment. If our pet is allergic to pollen, it’s very important to register the exact moment of the year when the crisis happens, since some plants produce pollen only a few days a year, and the same days year after year (it’s very typical the case of the dog which scratches like mad the first week of July year after year, and nothing at all the rest of the year). We can check at the Internet the levels of pollen in the air in every moment in our area, and this can help us to guess in advance when the allergic crisis is going to appear. In those days, it’s a good idea not to walk the animal outdoors (except for going to the toilet, and washing the animal when it’s back home for eliminating the pollen that got stuck to the fur), and to keep windows closed. In case of an animal allergic to pollen, lawn may be a big problem, because it consists of grasses, which are one of the most allergenic kinds of plants, and besides, when it has been mown recently, pollen spreads, so contacting a few seconds with lawn is enough to start the scratching. Let’s don’t forget that both mites and pollen produce their allergenic effect when inhaled. This means, for example, if the lawn of my urbanization has been mown in the morning, even if my pet hasn’t gone out yet, the pollen might have “flown” towards it and produce the crisis. What can we do? The most useful thing is to have a calendar with the dates of the allergic crisis our pet has suffered, and compare them with pollen maps which are available at the internet, avoid lawn, especially if it has been mown recently, and to keep our pet indoor and not ventilate our home in the moments of high concentration of pollen in the air.

GREAT CRESTED GREBE
ning courtship displays make them a firm favourite with birdwatchers. Much of the springtime courtship display is centred on strengthening the pair bond, and a number of different behaviours are seen. The head-shaking display is probably the most familiar; in this, the head plumage is fanned into a ruff before the birds then face each other and shake their heads from side to side. This display is seen mainly during the early stages of courtship and is often performed when the pair is reunited after a period of separation, suggesting that it is used as a greeting and for reinforcement.
This is all highly frustrating. I am stuck in the UK, with little prospect of being able to get out to Gran Alacant any time soon this year, what with underlying health issues and having to self-isolate. The only birding action I’m getting at home is a troupe of scruffy Sparrows, two fat Woodpigeons and a Blackbird pair which come down to bathe in my garden bird bath about twice a day. Fortunately I have several good birding friends who reside in the Gran Alacant area, and they are keeping me updated as best they can with what’s going on in the region. One recent report was of a bird which is fairly common on larger lakes around the Costa Blanca, but which I haven’t seen before in the Clot de Galvany; this bird illustrates the benefits of the development work which has taken place, particularly with regard to the wetland system. For some reason the main pool at the Eastern end of the reserve (the Charco de Contacto for those who know it), hasn’t been at all attractive to the Great Crested Grebe, but the recent enlargement of the large central pool has paid dividends in the form of this charismatic bird, and breeding has taken place this year. Adapted for an aquatic lifestyle, Great Crested Grebes struggle to get airborne and need a long run-up, which makes them avoid the smaller lakes and ponds. Yet, when on the water, they are graceful-looking birds, whose ornate plumage and stun-

The most elaborate of the displays is the ‘weed ceremony’, in which the two birds make a dive to collect weed, before returning to the surface and swimming towards each other, their heads held low. As they meet, the birds rise from the horizontal to adopt a rigid vertical posture, which they hold by paddling their webbed feet rapidly, treading the water. The birds become more retiring once the first egg has been laid. When incubating, the sitting bird will slip off the nest if it spots a predator. If a bird has more time when leaving the nest then it will cover the eggs with waterweed, which is why the eggs quickly change colour from white to a muddy brown. This reduces the chances of the eggs being spotted by a predator. The resulting chicks would also be at risk if they spend long in the nest, which is why they leave with their parents within a few hours of hatching. At this young age the parents often carry the small chicks on their back, as you can see in my photo, which was taken in El Hondo. These birds are widespread across most of Europe, and across Central Asia eastwards as far as China. Thanks to Greta Owen for the news of the Great Crested Grebe! THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HOT TUBS Hot tubs have been used for years as a way to recharge and strengthen the body. There are many health benefits to be gained from using one, even if people aren’t fully aware of them. We have put together some of the more commonly reported benefits of hot tub use. YOU’LL SLEEP BETTER Using a hot tub will help you to sleep better. This is because when your body is colder, it is harder to get to sleep. A hot tub heats the body up to a much better temperature, and this helps you to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep. The more REM sleep you can get the better, as it improves all kinds of things in your daily life, so using a hot tub is recommended for sleep issues. THE STRESS AND ANXIETY YOU MAY FEEL WILL GO A great thing about the hot tub is that it relaxes you. This sensation, coupled with a feeling of weightlessness, can help to reduce stress in the body and make you calmer. This will allow you to experience reduced levels of stress and anxiety, so it’s well worth taking a bit of time to sit and soak in the hot tub. YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE CAN GO DOWN This is something that is very helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure, as the use of a hot tub can help it to go down. This is because as the water warms up the body, it causes the blood vessels to dilate and circulate more. This can decrease the resistance against the heart, which will cause your blood pressure to lower. IT CAN HELP TO PREVENT MIGRAINES Another health benefit of using hot tubs on a regular basis is that it can aid in the prevention of migraines. A common trigger for a headache is tension, which is what the hot tub removes. Many people who suffer from migraines have reported that they get tension-based headaches just before, which acts as a sort of early warning system. The hot tub is designed to relax the muscles, which reduces contraction in the body, and helps to alleviate aches and pains, which makes the chances of a tension-based migraine much less. Dear Gran Alacant Advertiser, “I am a Year 12 student at the Lycée Français of Alicante, and I am part of the Students For Sustainable Fashion club. Our goal is to raise awareness about the impacts of the fast fashion industry, and raise money for charities surrounding it. I was wondering if there was any possibility of writing an article or Letter to The Editor in an upcoming paper. It would be about the changes that readers can make in their lifestyle as consumers to better the environment and international human rights”.
FAST FASHION Fast Fashion is the rapid production cycle of inexpensive clothing, at a very high cost. It is the second most polluting industry globally, following the oil industry. Since transportation and textiles aren't cheap, the savings and profit come out of the labour.
Inhumane working conditions, belowpoverty wages, and child labour are just some of the horrid conditions these producers face. In addition to manufacturing, there is also textile production. A single cotton T-shirt consumes over 10220 litres of water (which would be the equivalent of 70 showers). Children overseas are still being exploited to pick cotton; they are breathing in toxic fertilizers that are used to cheaply increase the production rate. Toxins from fertilizers and the dying process induce illness, birth defects, and premature death Remnants of these chemicals are often still present after the products are transported into stores. There's a reason most dirt-cheap garments reek; washing out chemicals costs money, and maximum profit is key to business. Due to the misogynistic, outdated culture of developing countries, women are often
sexually harassed by their employers and co-workers because their government doesn't enforce workplace rights. Maternity leave is seldom, and most children are either miscarried because of the mother's exhaustion or born with horrific birth defects invoked by the toxicity. How can you, the reader of this article, help? Every time you purchase an item you are voting; you're funding the brand and telling them that you want more similar items. You are supporting their unethical practices, in response, they will grow and continue. Buying local, thrifted, used, consigned, second hand and ethical clothing not only is great for the environment and reduces inhumane labour. But also many of these sustainable companies donate their profits to organizations that support the concept of "slow fashion", contrary to the practices initially described. Many clothes at thrift stores or secondhand stores are initially manufactured by fast fashion, but buying second hand isn't supporting the brand, and is recycling old clothing, it is giving the piece of clothing a new life. Many people respond to this issue with, "well you can't save the world" or "one purchase won't make a difference." No, I cannot save the world; just like a single cent isn't worth anything. However, a cent invested in a successful stock can sprout into a million of euros; just as my idea of treating other humans with respect is being shared with all of you readers, and if you tell your friends and change your habits, soon unethical corporations will go out of business or change their ways. Sofía Entrialgo Main, 15

The ride takes place from Monday to Friday. All equipment is supplied, apart from suncream. The ride is suitable for any competent cyclist, although very little fitness is required. Our riders age range has been 9 years to 79 years. We pick you up in Gran Alacant, usually at 10am from your hotel, accommodation and take a 45 minute drive to Agost. We then set of down the via verde, (green way), which is a disused railway line that has been turned into a walkway / cycle path. The first section takes us through the railway tunnels, 5 in total. The first two being approx. half a km long.
70
After cycling 8 km, we stop, where the catering staff will be waiting with picnic table and chairs. All refreshments are supplied, which includes sandwiches, beer, water, soft drinks, crisps, cakes and fresh fruit. Normally this short break will be around 30 - 45 mins. The next section takes us through vineyards, olive groves and almond groves, passing oranges, lemons, figs and walnuts on the way. When the weather is really hot, we have a “pit stop” to replenish any water that is required.
