We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk

We had two difficult months but now that the lockdown restrictions are easing it’s nice to see life returning to our streets once again. We see businesses reopening and people getting out and about again. Life is slowly returning to normal. We would like to thank all our readers for sending in and sharing their lockdown stories. And a really HUGE thank you to all the businesses who advertised this month because without them this magazine wouldn’t be possible.

Thank you All Ged & Lou x

Alicante airport in lockdown

Dear Ged & Lou, just thought we would send you some pics of the Alicante airport in lockdown. We had to return a hire car back to the airport and we didn't realise that to collect a replacement we should have stayed in the car park area and so went in to the airport as usual expecting an office to be open. We were passed by at least three lots of airport police and not once did they stop us? The only shop open was the pharmacy?! Regards, David and Christine

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS:

In this lockdown we are all seeing our birthday cards, Anniversaries, flying by whilst we sit in our own homes. Nothing being celebrated. ********** VE day We do have pictures that show that VE day did not pass by without a mention. Thank you Julie Parker for your picture ...

Pictures of hotel I know those that live here can follow the progress of the new hotel, but for those that holiday here and have second homes on the urbanisation can see the pictures on the magazine website. Most external work nearly complete but lots of the interiors to finish.

********** Stranded Cannot believe how many Brits are stranded out here and cannot get home. Surely the UK should have helped these citizens before shutting the country down. ********** Earth tremors More earth tremors felt here on Gran Alacant during late May. ********** Lemon picture Our lemon tree is keeping us amused Barry. From Julie Stansfield Parker.

********** Population Many times I am asked “what is the population of Gran Alacant”? The answer from the GA Councillor Oscar is officially 10,510, unofficially not known. Many more not on the padron so unknown.

Allotments again Several years ago the Town Hall of the day, agreed to build an area of allotments so that some of the keen gardeners had somewhere to enjoy their favourite past time. So many people put their names down for a plot that the gardens were over subscribed. Lots were drawn and away we went. After awhile the area looked good and well used.

Several years later some of the regular plot holders had to give up their plots so that newcomers could take a turn. But then … several plot holders went awol and the plots went from rack to ruin, as you can see from the pictures. Why are the town hall not getting to grips with the allotments and getting them back to well cultivated plots. How many plots are used and how many

plots are empty? Perhaps we could help to fill the plots?

Life Resort. I'm trying to see the positives that have come out of this awful situation

From James After being home bound for several weeks my wife & I have been able to get on the bike up on Caza most mornings using the road from N332 to El Faro to put the best Km of our ride that takes about 65/70 mins ensuring we are home before 10 am of course. The thing we have noticed up there from our previous years of cycling "up there " that there is not one car on the road, over the years we have had close encounters, with speeding cars on this single track road, I would say at least 10% do speed, of course that means 90% considerate drivers. Other observations is that it seems to be fresher air, & we can smell the spring blossoms, probably for the first time, also hearing bird song (on our Urb) but in particular on our almost daily run out has made a difference, the only negative is that the shrubs & trees are overgrown but that’s the way of lockdown. People out on their daily exercise also seem to be more pleasant & respectful of each other.

********** And an observation from James ... Over the many years we have been here we have certainly enjoyed the food & hospitality of many establishments from beach line to upper GA & many places in between. We are used to not having food prepared meals delivered (apart from a short time when a young man did so on his quad bike), however since lockdown started many restaurants in all area's of GA have started delivering hot food of all types & cultures.

********** Again from James It is wonderful to see parents out with children teaching how to ride a bike scooters, thanks to Keith and Sahara, things that would not have perhaps happened prior to lockdown on flat areas of Santara

Of course this may have not happened unless “Lockdown” had happened, but with many in particular some of our visitors it will be welcome, we understand & enjoy the formal restaurant evenings in GA. Standing round waiting in takaway/ fastfood outlets walking home, due to the lack of taxis in GA has been a mystery to guest & visitors ... many coming from Northern Europe where deliveries are the norm. The mother of invention is a necessity, & the fast food outlets & restaurants have upped their games, to which we hope continues long after lockdown is passed.

PREPARING THE BEACHES FOR THE SUMMER

In May the Town Council's Beach Management Body met electronically to discuss an action plan to prepare the beaches. The beaches have suffered a lot this last year due to the cold drop in September and the sea storm in January, in addition to the pandemic that has paralysed our daily lives. The Beach Management Team are going to work tirelessly to make sure that our beaches look as good as ever and that everything is ready for when the beaches are open again. As well as cleaning the beaches and removing the sea weed/algae. There are other adaptations to both the beaches and their infrastructure that need to occur. These include access points, footbaths, the pumping station connections, controls for water analysis, preparing the devices for the beach police and lifeguard facilities and the design of informative signs. The Town Hall are waiting for the guidelines from the Ministry of Health to ensure that they can guarantee safety on our beaches this year. In the meantime, the Santa Pola City Council is already working together with other municipalities and the ICTE (Institute for Spanish Tourist Quality) in the preparation of a Contingency Plan against COVID-19. They are also studying how the high degree of salinity in our sea water can be a benefit from COVID-19. According to the latest CSIC report: "Although there are no studies on the prevalence of viruses in the present sand on beaches or riverbanks, the combined action of seawater salt, solar ultraviolet radiation and the high temperature that can reach the sand, are favourable for the inactivation of pathogens".

MOSQUITO FUMIGATION

The joint mosquito fumigation plan between the municipalities of Santa Pola and Elche has continued throughout May. Lokimica and CTL are continuing to operate simultaneously and it is hoped that this will help prevent a large mosquito infestation.

RUNNING A TIGHT SHIP at LoungeD

A NEW CYCLE/PEDESTRIAN PATH TO LINK ELCHE AVENUE IN ALICANTE WITH URBANOVA is pending final approval. Construction

The new owner of LoungeD Simona, a retired Officer of the Marines, is now living in Gran Alacant and keeping everything shipshape at LoungeD.

The project, drawn up by the architects Manuel Lillo and Emilio Vicedo and engineer Jaime Alonso, will see the creation of a continuous pathway from the southern access to Alicante to Urbanova. This area will be transformed with large landscaped areas, trees, a bike path and a raised section that goes over the railroad tracks. The designers have created a light structure and gazebos which will become iconic to the area.

company Pavasal have been awarded the contract and it is expected that they will be given the go ahead at the end of May 2020. The budget for this project is 2.5 million.

A new roundabout at the junction to the Digital District will also be constructed and the area near the entrance to EUIPO will have a landscaped median that is illuminated with LEDs, and feature trees that are planted in a sustainability way. The pathway will run along the San Gabriel seafront, on either side of Elche Avenue. A linear park will be generated that will frame the bike path and have bio-healthy exercise sets, bike racks, benches and other urban furniture. There will also be an entrance and exit on Pego and Dolores streets. READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB

Sponsored by The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, LoungeD, Rogers, La Piazza & The Belfry

Members of Monte Mar looking forward to bowling again... No doubt like the rest of the community we were delighted to reach Phase One of the lock down. We had previously been advised by the police at Santa Pola that once Phase One was implemented we could start to bowl again provided we conformed to all the regulations and health safeguards. In recent days members have been busy ensuring that all the safety regulations were in place and that they would work effectively. This will mean members on a controlled basis can undertake some much needed practice this will hopefully be extended when Phase Two is reached. Following which we can then start planning the league campaigns, which hopefully will get underway at the end of September as normal. We recognise that being fully operational is a few months away but at least now we can start looking to the future. During the lock down our online weekly Quiz organised by Dave has continued to grow with more than sixty participants each week.

In the near future our Social Sub Committee will review our social programme for the rest of the year and consider if any of the events cancelled can be reinstated. We must continue to follow the guidelines of each stage as we come out of lock down to ensure we stay safe, and we will reap the benefits of returning to a degree of normality. International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured Life on The Outside Again

During the month of May we experienced the start of outside life again and this month our “new normal” will begin … I wonder what this will entail? I don’t know about you, but I am struggling with the “no contact” and I wonder how long it will be before we are safe to give someone a hug again without the fear of death spreading through our minds. I think about the children, their immune systems have still to be built up to enable them to fight environmental threats, and I think from an holistic view the detrimental effect that the “lost months” of life may bring to many of us.

spin it has brought many of us together. I will share this month little ways we can all work on ourselves to boost our immune system and find our inner happiness. Holistic Ways to Boost Your Immune System 1. Practicing activities like meditation or aromatherapy can reduce stress within us, when we carry stress, we have a reduced immune response. 2. Move your body: Did you start daily exercise during the de-escalation? Keep it going, no matter if it is only a 30 min walk daily- keep up the good work.

How many of you still have “the fear” lurking in your mind? We probably all have a little, and its common sense on this occasion to act with caution, that said, if it is at the point where it is crippling you with anxiety, then please reach out … don’t suffer in silence.

3. Healthy Breakfast: Start your day with a form of probiotic, this good bacterium helps prevent any colds getting in.

The “social” distancing, I would refer to as “physical” distancing because on a positive

5. Spice it up: a shot of ginger a day keeps the doctor away- ginger has been used for

4. Eat more vegetables: having more plant-based meals keeps our immune systems in peak performance.

Want to ask Elena a question??..

Lda. Elena Blanaru Lucanu is a general psychologist at Gran Alacant Family Doctors 24h

Every month she will try to answer your questions, your name will be kept in the strictest confidentiality

T: +34 610 684 970 I Email: elenablanaru@cop.es

Q

: I feel very dependent on my partner, what can I do?

In what aspects or areas of your life does this dependence have an impact? What function does it have for you and how can you replace it with other less painful tools. I would recommend that you see a nearby psychologist with the necessary qualifications to help you in this process.

Q A

: How can I avoid fear of disease and overcome hypochondria?

A

: First of all, we´d have to see what kind of dependency it is. Is it in everything, or is it in a specific area. What do you think and feel when you put yourself in this dependent position, how does your partner treat you and how your relationship is, how you communicate and what social skills you have, among other things. The fact is that you feel dependent and it seems like a problem for you, which is enough for you to look for a solution that allows you to feel freer and relate with your partner in an equal position. Emotional dependency is a very delicate matter and is difficult to work with. Normally, these types of circumstances are due to low self-esteem and high insecurity. Furthermore, emotional dependence correlates with insecurity, obsession with a partner and jealousy. The first thing you’ve already done is to become aware and this is a very important step. It would then be necessary to assess whether you have talked about it with your partner, and what your partner says.

46

: Fear is a natural mechanism, but avoiding it leads us to experience it even more and take it to the extreme of suffering from non-existent or irrational thoughts or beliefs. The way to deal with that fear is not to avoid it, but to confront it through psychotherapy. The deepest way to solve a difficulty is to face it. Psychological treatment will allow you to analyse that fear and find a way for you to handle it in a more adaptive and positive way. Hypochondria is one of the anxiety manifestations, which is expressed through thoughts, emotions and sensations of content focused on the disease. One of the recommended things isn’t to try and eliminate or fight fear, but to learn coping and acceptance strategies. To be able to lead a much fuller life, you need to learn to tolerate the sensations and thoughts that cause you to be constantly alert. Mindfulness can help you tolerate these feelings and thoughts, and work on acceptance therapy. Hypochondria quite resistant psychotherapy. the arguments

is also a syndrome to an approach without The reassuring messages, against, even the medical

tests, do not calm the fear. Firstvof all I recommend that you do not use the internet to try to find out what is happening to you. That only aggravates the problems, and if you are not able to look at the symptoms on the internet for a long period of time, you will notice how the fears begin to diminish. Be aware that many ideas found on the internet are not always correct. Anyway, my recommendation is that you go to psychological therapy. Cognitive behavioural work can help you overcome symptoms in a fairly reasonable amount of time.

Q A

: How does a healthy person become addicted to mobile phones?

: Mobile phone addiction, like any other addiction, doesn’t suddenly appear without reason, even if these aren’t known. Addiction usually arises after a specific event, that may or may not be identified, triggers it. Any addiction is generally preceded by a sense of need and dependence on something that we adhere to and that seems to momentarily calm us. There are certain basic factors in the personality of the person who develops an addiction, although these factors alone do not determine it. They are usually people with a medium-high degree of anxiety and a difficult tolerance of

Ask Elena

frustration. They seek immediate answers to their needs that generates a certain degree of satisfaction. This leads them to establish a relationship of dependence on people, objects or situations that act as a refuge and calmer of their anxiety. They often have difficulty developing and sustaining longterm projects and harbour a sense of dissatisfaction in themselves and their life that pushes them to repeatedly seek short-term satisfaction. As this satisfaction is not maintained over time, it feeds over and over again the pattern of repetition that is established as part of normal functioning, needing the object of your addiction, more and more regularly. A person can become addicted to work, to a relationship, to substances or to objects such as mobile phones, etc. By not being able to cut this repetitive circle, the person establishes a bond of slavery with their object of addiction, which greatly limits their life and causes great suffering.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY After 64 days of lockdown our local Course opened on Monday 18 May and we are now back playing golf at El Plantio. Of course things are different,eg no rakes in bunkers or touching of flags on greens. We are allowed to play in fourballs and can use buggies. The tees and fairways are in superb condition although the grass on the greens is a little long and therefore slower than we have been used to at this time of the year. The rough has been allowed to grow (there is no first cut) and is both lush and deep – in other words : brutal. Finally, El Plantio only opens now at 8.30am so whilst we have the detail information below intact, our tee times have changed temporarily. Therefore any visitors, once travel to Spain is again permitted, should contact us to check the times for that week. The Society details are as follows: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The offficial address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante. When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.

Time: on both days at normally at 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.

Cost: usually 50 euros per round at peak times to include a buggy plus 1.50 euros mandatory insurance charge. Can be cheaper during less busy off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires 5 euros sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018)

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals” Gandhi As things slowly start to resume again we know in our hearts that things will never quite be the same again ... Our inner and outer lives have been rocked, our mental and social health challenged and our ways of being together changed. But it also a time to be grateful and appreciative of the so many things we have maybe taken for granted. As I wrote last month this is, I’m sure , for many of us, a chance to rethink the way we live our lives both individually and collectively, and I have been reflecting on this. It is so easy to blame others, our leaders, policies, politics, and /or to criticise what we see in the world. It, as Gandhi so famously said in the words above, is ourself, when we feel moved or inclined to a certain situation that must be the change we want to see. That I think means in the way we feel, think and act.

has a great selection of veggie burgers and sausages for the BBQ season. 4. To encourage and support the birds ... I can feed and water them in my garden or urbanisation. 5. If I want a pet ... I can visit my local rescue homes to see if I can find one there. I can offer a few hours of my time to help at rescue homes and charities. Meanwhile, Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has managed to keep its 120, horses, ponies and donkeys safe, well and fed during these difficult times, despite the charity shops being closed.

A FEW OF THE THINGS I THOUGHT OF: 1.To save water … I can put a bucket under my shower tap until it runs hot and use that water for my plants/ garden . I need not flush the toilet every time if it’s “ yellow”. I can use a cup instead of letting a tap run when I clean my teeth. 2. To help save on plastics … I can have an under sink filter fitted and then I don’t need to buy bottled water. I can reuse plastic bottles ( flushing them with boiling water to keep them hygienic) for drinking water . I can reuse plastic bags for fruit and veg at the supermarket or not use bags at all and keep them loose. I can take a bag and clear plastic from my street or beach from time to time. 3. To use less of the worlds resources ... I can eat less meat, fish and dairy , and eat more pulses, grains and vegetables. Overseas Supermarkets in San Fulgencio

Tel: 966 698 569 Grooming Service Available METHUSELAH DOGS Last April, an article about the genome of two amazing dogs was published: Kevdes, a male which reached the age of 22, and Boksi, which died at 27. These deaths happened short time ago, so the scientists were able to use some blood samples collected from these two dogs for investigating about aging mechanisms. Both dogs lived in Hungary, and spent their lives accompanied by other dogs, and lots of people: Kevdes lived in a dog shelter, and Boksi in a farm, so they both could spend most of their time outdoors taking exercise. Apart from this, there were no more points in common in their lives: diet and veterinary care were totally different in every case.

According to Guinness World Records Book, the longest living dog was Bluey, which died at 29 in 1939. Unfortunately, genetic researches won’t became common till several decades later, but one thing is true: the habitat Bluey enjoyed was similar to Kevdes and Boksi’s, since Bluey was an Australian Sheperd Dog which was herding

sheep for 20 years. Healthy condition, illness predisposition, longevity, even behaviour, are all determined by both genetic and environmental factors. Of course, we can’t do anything about genetic factors in our pets, but there are several things we can do for improving environmental ones: food, vaccines, exercise and games, everything counts for animal (and human) welfare. These investigations suggest longevity (genetically speaking), depends of just a low number of genes which regulate immunity and inflammatory mechanisms, so investigating these genes in long living dogs may help understanding aging mechanisms in people. In these 3 cases (Kevdes, Boksi and Blue), we are talking of dogs which apart from living long time, they were healthy till the end. The genome of these Methuselah dogs is compared with the one of “normal” dogs and the results are kept in specific databases. In order to make the results reliable, sample size must be big enough. According to a Japanese research, 0.1% dogs live between 22 and 25 years, which means there are enough Methuselah dogs in the world for doing the investigation. Of course, the most difficult thing is to find them, so, if you own one of these dogs and want to contribute to this research, an ordinary blood sample is all the scientists need. Here is the website: https://familydogproject.elte.hu Please don’t forget to keep hygienic patterns for stopping 2019-nCoV. Facemask and frequent hand washing are enough. Animals don’t require any extra precaution.

for sending in your lovely poem ...

THE FREEDOM OF LOCKDOWN The sprawling sierra, there for our leisure fills my heart with its daily pleasure. My shadow like a signpost in front of me marks my way west, away from the sea. The sun says hello as I pace out below while the flowers of May greet the day. Swifts and seagulls swoop with ease, songs all around from the birds and the bees. Sweeping and smooth, the paths reach out, stones of warm hues, ready to flout. The track ahead, deep-rutted and fierce, bicycle tyres, beware of their pierce! Flowers vie for attention - lemon & lime, lilac & ruby, look at me is their call, me, queen of them all! Wild orchid blooms bow their dainty heads, unfurling from the ground, hoping not to be found. Breathing deeply, I’m mindful to notice the benefits of daily yoga practice. Panoramic vistas from east to north west, interesting skylines, turquoise waters at their best, Distant mountains rolling, majestic and clear, the bay sweeping south from our port so dear. As my eyes gaze in wonder, time stands still, but alas I must return, so against my will. Crunch, crunch, crunch as I step out briskly, hoppity hop, the lone bunny stops, risky! Grasses and flowers flutter and sway, hardly a breeze, the sun hides away. A solitary thistle stands upright and strong, the proud symbol of where I belong. Curfew calls, another reminder of C-19 which powerful minds strive to vaccine. And look! Indigo, a wonderful hue, normally masked between violet and blue. Thoughts of our rainbows so cheery and bright, let us hope and pray an end is in sight. Helen, May 2020

Bob is around 6 months old and is 1 of 4 pups thrown out as young pup by the owner of their mum. He likes to be cuddled to feel safe and secure and is very happy when playing with his toys. Bob is vaccinated, weighs just 4 kilos and will be small/ medium size when fully grown

Maisie is around 4/5 months old and was thrown out along with her siblings. Maisie is vaccinated, good with other dogs and will be small/ medium size when fully grown.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

by Mark Etheridge

WHISKERED TERN shown in my picture is the fairly common Whiskered Tern. A small breeding group has become established in the Clot, and now you can be fairly sure of seeing them during each visit.

Lockdown, what lockdown? By the time you read this, things should be back to some sort of normal, and you can get out and about in the countryside and see how the lack of human disruption has benefitted wildlife over the past few months, with cleaner air and less artificial noise improving conditions at the height of the breeding season. On the other hand, we might be back to square one – my crystal ball is being very vague on this prediction... Anyway, let’s take a wander into the Clot, and perhaps visit the brand-new hide which was erected just before things went pearshaped. This one overlooks the large central lagoon, which is bordered with extensive reedbeds, and which holds the slightly shyer species which you might not see very often at the main pool. There is one particular species of bird which has increased in the area over the past few years, as a result of the improved water control measures which have been implemented. Here we have one of the five regular species of tern which occur in our area (there are also several rarer terns which may occur). Terns are usually thought of as sea-going birds, like smaller and more dainty versions of seagulls, but there are also a group of them known as Marsh Terns, and the one

62 62

These birds are summer visitors, spending the winter in western Africa south of the Sahara. The species ranges throughout the Mediterranean basin, across central Asia as far as China and south to Australia. They can be easily separated from the oceanic terns such as the Common and Sandwich Terns, by being somewhat smaller and with a shorter tail – the tubby body is also a smoky grey colour unlike the pure white of the sea-going terns. They have a buoyant, erratic flight pattern, dipping down to the water’s surface to delicately pick up insects, and on occasion splashing a little deeper to catch small surface-feeding fish. They also hawk for flying insects such as dragonflies and mayflies, and sometimes visit drier areas to benefit from local outbreaks of such things as flying ants. These birds raise one brood of up to three chicks on a floating raft of vegetation; the chicks will leave the nest just one day after hatching, and hide in the reeds until their flight feathers have developed. They nest in loose colonies which they will defend together, and although not quite as fierce as the sea terns in defending the nests, they will attack intruders (including humans!) who stray too close – you have been warned! They have a short scratchy call something like “krekkk” which is one of the defining sounds of our reedbeds. They are only vagrants to the UK, with just the occasional stray seen each year. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF HOT TUBS Hot tubs have been used for years as a way to recharge and strengthen the body. There are many health benefits to be gained from using one, even if people aren’t fully aware of them. We have put together some of the more commonly reported benefits of hot tub use. YOU’LL SLEEP BETTER Using a hot tub will help you to sleep better. This is because when your body is colder, it is harder to get to sleep. A hot tub heats the body up to a much better temperature, and this helps you to fall asleep quicker and stay asleep. The more REM sleep you can get the better, as it improves all kinds of things in your daily life, so using a hot tub is recommended for sleep issues. THE STRESS AND ANXIETY YOU MAY FEEL WILL GO A great thing about the hot tub is that it relaxes you. This sensation, coupled with a feeling of weightlessness, can help to reduce stress in the body and make you calmer. This will allow you to experience reduced levels of stress and anxiety, so it’s well worth taking a bit of time to sit and soak in the hot tub. YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE CAN GO DOWN This is something that is very helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure, as the use of a hot tub can help it to go down. This is because as the water warms up the body, it causes the blood vessels to dilate and circulate more. This can decrease the resistance against the heart, which will cause your blood pressure to lower. IT CAN HELP TO PREVENT MIGRAINES Another health benefit of using hot tubs on a regular basis is that it can aid in the prevention of migraines. A common trigger for a headache is tension, which is what the hot tub removes. Many people who suffer from migraines have reported that they get tension-based headaches just before, which acts as a sort of early warning system. The hot tub is designed to relax the muscles, which reduces contraction in the body, and helps to alleviate aches and pains, which makes the chances of a tension-based migraine much less.
