Q: Trash cans
Oscar
Valenzuela Councillor of Gran Alacant & Education
Hi Lou - a comment in case it helps to improve Gran Alacant. I see many trash cans with papers lying around and I have noticed that these days the seagulls take them out. You could say to see if it is feasible to put covers on them or buy a model with covers. This way we avoid more urban work and in summer we avoid bad smells. David
GA Advertiser reply:
We have shared your interesting idea with our councillors for further review. We’ve also noticed street bins with lids in Alicante
Borja
Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
city (see picture below), which could be a good solution.
Q: Stickers for bins
Hi Lou, I think some of the problem with fly tipping at the bins is that maybe new people to the area are not aware that they cannot just leave large items at the bins. I know when we first moved here people told us that we could put furniture items next to the bins and they'd be collected. It wasn't until we'd been here a while that we found out this isn't exactly correct and that you had to book a free collection with Urbaser.
Perhaps if they could put stickers on the bins, similar to the one in the GA Magazine, it might make people more aware.
Thanks Lynne
GA Advertiser reply:
Hi Lynne, yes, that would certainly be a good idea. We have forwarded your suggestion to Encarni Ramirez (the councillor for cleaning) to consider.
Q: Bins
This is Gran Alacant this evening. The area Calle Canarias and Mediterraneo. There is some terrible wrong in our GA. People are pigs!!! And besides all that. Is it legal
for shops and restaurants to use the public bins? I have seen restaurants dumping so much waste and it’s not even sorted! Jan
Borja Merino reply:
Thank you for your email and I have informed the councillor for cleaning. To answer your question, yes, bars and restaurants are allowed to use public bins.
Q: Playground
Hi Lou, I’m at the park opposite Aldi on the main road. There’s a lot of damage to the slide and it’s a mess. Can the council check this out please? Karen
GA Advertiser reply:
We have forwarded your email to Encarni Ramirez (councillor for cleaning). The children's playground outside the medical centre has recently been renovated, as well as the one beside the post office, so let's hope this one will be next.
BIG GA SPRING CLEAN
Extensive cleaning and maintenance works were seen across Gran Alacant in February. Work included repainting of roads/crossings, cleaning and repairing bins, removing illegally dumped waste, maintaining pathways, and cleaning of roads, as well as pest control of processionary caterpillars.
Please dispose of your waste RESPONSIBLY - find out how on the next page!

LOCAL GA HOUSE DECLUTTERING SERVICE RECYCLING OLD COMPUTERS
"Dear Lou, first of all a Happy New Year and a big thank you for an excellent magazine.
My problem is that I have some old computers that I want to get rid of. I seem to remember reading about computer collection at the Mercadillo, but forgot to save the information.
I’d appreciate very much if you could tell me in which issue of the advertisers it was published (I still have the last 6 months) or if there is a collection at the Mercadillo every Thursday?
Thank you very much in advance. All the best for 2025, Lena"
GA Advertiser reply:

ECOPARQUE RECYCLING POINT
ECOPARQUE is a free public facility in Santa Pola for disposing of waste that doesn’t fit in traditional bins. It ensures proper waste storage, sorting, and recycling, reducing landfill use and conserving resources.
Accepted items include plastics, paper, glass, batteries, furniture, and appliances, while hazardous, toxic, and organic waste are prohibited. Designated containers aid sorting, and staff are available to assist visitors.

The Gran Alacant municipal offices have reopened after a two-and-a-half-month renovation, offering a more spacious, comfortable, and accessible environment for residents. The improvements include an open-plan layout, new flooring, and energy-efficient LED lighting.
Councilors Óscar Valenzuela and Borja Merino visited the remodeled offices, which now feature two service points, a meeting area, and a waiting room with stunning sea views.
NEW WEATHER-BASED SPORTS WEB APP LAUNCHED
Santa Pola has introduced Meteo Sport Santa Pola, a new web app that recommends sports activities based on real-time weather conditions. Developed by Lynx View and funded by Next Generation EU, the app helps users find the best spots for activities like hiking, paragliding, and water sports. It also connects them with local businesses and clubs, promoting sustainable sports tourism. Available on www.turismosantapola.es, this innovative tool enhances safety, enjoyment, and economic activity, reinforcing Santa Pola’s commitment to digitalization and sustainability.
SANTA POLA EMBRACES ACCESSIBILITY WITH NAVILENS
Santa Pola is now more accessible with the installation of NaviLens codes at 50 key locations, including beaches and the Castle-Fortress. This innovative system, presented at Fitur 2025, helps all visitors especially those with visual impairments navigate the town with ease. Using the free NaviLensGo app, users can scan the codes from a distance, receiving instant audio-guided information in their preferred language. Funded by Next Generation
EU, this project reinforces Santa Pola’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable tourism, ensuring a welcoming experience for everyone.
CABO DE SANTA POLA MASTER PLAN AND URBAN AGENDA 2030
The Santa Pola City Council has approved the Cabo de Santa Pola Master Plan, which includes four hiking trails as part of a €15 million project eligible for EU funding. The Urban Agenda 2030 was also approved to guide future development. A motion requesting the resignation of Carlos Mazón was rejected, while the council unanimously supported the recognition of the Patron Saint Festivities and Moors & Christians celebrations as regional interests. Additionally, a health program for residents and a request to extend the local funeral home’s hours were approved.
SANTA POLA SCORES 9.1 IN TOURIST SATISFACTION
A recent study surveying 303 off-season visitors awarded Santa Pola an outstanding 9.1/10 as a travel destination. Conducted under the Next Generation EU-funded Tourism Sustainability Plan, the report highlights growing international appeal and opportunities to attract high-spending visitors year-round.
Key insights show that 56% of tourists are Spanish, while foreign visitors spend more per trip. Popular attractions include the fishing port, lighthouse viewpoint, and water sports like windsurfing. However, the study suggests boosting promotion abroad, emphasising gastronomy, scenic beauty, and “Sun & Beach” experiences.
Plans include expanding Santa Pola’s digital presence, targeting British, French, and senior travelers, and creating
“Instagrammable” spots to increase online visibility.
ALICANTE LEADS VALENCIAN COMMUNITY TOURISM IN 2024
Alicante welcomed 4.8 million visitors in 2024, making it the top tourist destination in the Valencian Community, surpassing Valencia and Castellón. According to HOSBEC’s Hotel Monitor 2024, international tourism played a key role, with foreign visitors driving a 9.1% increase in overnight stays. The UK remained the largest market, while Dutch tourists had the longest stays.

The Origin of Gran Alacant?
I am trying to find out how old Gran Alacant is - as a part of Santa Pola. Searching the internet I find the first use of the word in 1996.
But someone mentioned that the big master plan to develop GA was originally presented in 1972, from a windy hilltop to a community of more than 10,000 people.
If it exists it would be great to see it on display in the library. Can you help find the facts? Svend
If any of our readers can help shed light on this fascinating question, please reach out to us at: info@granalacantadvertiser.com
We´d love to hear from anyone with historical insights, old documents, or even personal memories and photos of Gran Alacant’s early days!

Acts of Kindness: Knitting for a Cause
A group of dedicated knitters in Gran Alacant are creating these adorable handmade dolls inspired by a popular "Acts of Kindness" initiative in the UK.
These dolls are available for €3 at Tommy’s and Quicksave, with 50% of proceeds benefiting local pet charity ASPETGA. So far, the project has raised a fantastic €200 and the dolls are so popular, the knitters can barely keep up with the demand!

Book of the month by Beth
A beautifully crafted novel about a nightmarish scenario
My Recommended Book of the Month THREE HOURS
By Rosamund Lupton
In rural Somerset the middle of a blizzard, the unthinkable happensa school is under siege by gunmen. Pupils and teachers barricade themselves into classrooms, the library, the theatre. The Headmaster lies wounded in the library, unable to help the trapped students and staff.
Outside the emergency services surround the school grounds. But the school is spread out. They need to work out how many gunmen are in the school and grounds. A police psychiatrist must identify the gunmen.
Meanwhile parents gather desperate for news In three intense hours, all must find the courage to stand unto evil and save the people they love.
This was a very emotional, devastating and beautifully observed novel. It was informative about the process that is used by the emergency services and why they seem to hold back. But it was uplifting to see the staff and pupils managing in different ways to help each other stand up to evil.
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

The Genesis of an Idea
The story of this monument begins in the most unassuming of places – a cosy pub in Gran Alacant. It was over a few pints of Mahou lager that Paul Kane, in the company of his friend Peter, conceived the idea of creating a lasting memorial for the fallen soldiers.
The conversation, initially casual, soon turned into a serious discussion about the importance of remembering history and paying tribute to the brave souls who fought in the wars. Paul’s passion and conviction were palpable, and it wasn’t long before Peter and later Phil were fully on board with the idea.
4 years later the unveiling took place, thanks to the mayor Loreto Serrano and Local councillor Oscar Valenzuela.
Kings College an English school in Alicante prepared a time capsule to be buried beneath the stone which contains along with other interesting items, a January 2025 copy of GRAN ALACANT advertiser. All under the watchful eye of our own Tammy Bouse.
What’s next? Joan Kane will be planting wildflower seeds in the spring, such as Forget me nots and Poppys very fitting choice of flowers.
Plans already afoot to position a bench alongside the monument for people wanting to take a little time out, reflect and remember the men that fought so fearlessly.
Various fundraising but fun events throughout the year will be taking place to ensure this happens.
Thanks to all our members and supporters.

THE SECRETS OF A HAPPY MARRIAGE
AN INTERVEW WITH BETH & JOHN
This month we meet Beth and John, both from Scotland, who have just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary together!
WHERE ARE YOU BOTH FROM?
John born in Tain, a small town on the Dornoch Firth famous as the home of Glenmorangie Whisky. Beth born in Glasgow.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN GA?
We bought our first property, an apartment in Mediterraneo I, in 2000 and enjoyed our visits so much we bought our present house in Isla de Izaro in 2006. We have spent several years completing our garden, as it had to be done from scratch.
We became residents in 2020 mainly because of Brexit. We have 3 daughters, 2 of whom live in EU, so it was not a hard decision for us and we have never regretted it. In fact, I don’t know why it took us so long!
HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED?
We just celebrated our 55th wedding anniversary. We treated ourselves to a wonderful few days in the city of Alicante.
HAVE YOU HAD ANY TOUGH TIMES AND IF SO HOW DID YOU GET THROUGH THEM?
Of course, marriage has its difficulties as you have to learn to live together. You need to be prepared to compromise and talk through your problems. We are both individuals and have to learn to share and give each other space when we need it. It helps that we feel that we are married to our best friend. We are very happy with our life together and take delight in seeing our children, their husbands and our grandchildren growing up.
WHAT IS YOUR TOP TIP FOR A HAPPY MARRIAGE?
Love and respect each other and always work as a team.
Would you like to share your secrets of a happy marriage?

MAR MENOR - A STORY OF FISH, FARMERS AND A BIG LEGAL REVOLUTION…
Just over the border into Murcia is one of Spain’s gems, the huge coastal salt water lagoon known as Mar Menor or “little sea”. We have intended to visit this special place since moving to Spain but somehow never got around to it. We decided to remedy this omission and get some exercise by walking one of the trails that follow the northern edge of the lagoon.
The Mar Menor is a wonder of nature. It is a body of water with a surface area of 135km 2 bounded by a 70km long shoreline, but It is never more than 7 metres deep. The lagoon is created by a 22 km long natural sand bar that separates it from the sea. The water inside the lagoon has a higher salinity than the sea and supports a distinctive ecosystem of aquatic and bird life. The salt flats at the northern end of the lagoon are a protected nature park. The lagoon and its surrounding land are recognised under both Spanish and international law as of special ecological value. The site is a protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention on wetlands.
The features that fostered such natural richness also made it irresistible to humans who were drawn to the calm and safe
water to fish, collect salt and indulge in recreation. For centuries the local people lived in harmony with the lagoon and its wildlife. The modern age however changed that harmonious relationship. The edge of the lagoon and in particular the crucial sand bar known as La Manga became prime real estate and were developed with hotels, apartments and the trappings of intensive ribbon development. The lagoon became a playground for watersports and tourism.
At the same time a huge development of industrial agriculture was occurring in Murcia with farmers using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in huge quantities. These washed off of the land into the rivers and watercourses that fed into the Mar Menor, contaminating the lagoon. By 2016 the lagoon ecosystem was considered on the point of collapse. The situation grew worse with mass deaths of fish in 2019 and 2021 due to depletion of oxygen in the water caused by algae and bacteria fed by fertilizer from farmland. Some ecologists considered the lagoon a dead ecosystem, its waters foul with pollution and death. The beaches were stripped of blue flag status and the area became known internationally
as an example of how to destroy a precious site.
What happened as a result of this catastrophe resulted in a legal revolution that will transform environmental law. In 2022 Mar Menor was granted unique legal rights by the Spanish government. It was given “rights of nature”, the first time a natural feature has been granted this novel status in Europe. This status allows legal proceedings, including prosecutions, to be brought in the name of the lagoon, as if it were a human person or legal entity such as a corporation. The first proceedings are underway. In effect the lagoon now has the legal ability to protect itself in the courts.
The campaign to secure this development was led by local university professors of law but the international inspiration actually came from a British lawyer, Mumta Ito, who also happens to be an old friend of Archie’s from law school! Last year Mumta visited us and met up with the Spanish team who won the “rights of nature” for Mar Menor. Mumta has been campaigning on this issue for over a decade and the Mar Menor law is an important milestone for her campaign since it shows how such developments can take place. Similar campaigns are taking place elsewhere, including in Frome in England where the river has been poisoned by intensive chicken farming slurry.
Our recent visit took the form of a long walk along one of the designated local walking routes between Pilar de la Horadada (Alicante) and San Pedro del
Pinatar (Murcia). This took us along the beach, stopping for lunch at the marina and then onto the causeways that cross the lagoon’s northern end. We passed the canals and windmills used to manage the water and aid salt production. All around us were wonderful birdlife and sheets of calm water shimmering under the late afternoon sun.
The Mar Menor is indeed a special place, not just for its immense beauty but also for the hope it now offers for a legal path to protect our most precious natural sites and places. We recommend you make a visit and if possible learn about the unique environmental legal campaign that this place gave birth to.

HAND RAISED BIRDS DRAMA
These last years, exotic animals trade (specially birds), has deeply changed in this area. Time ago, hand raised animals were a minority, despite their evident advantages: we were sure they had not been stolen from their natural environment, and they were used and not afraid of people, so they were much easier to treat. At the beginning, only the biggest and most expensive species (African Gray, macaws) were available, but little by little it has become more and more common to find hand raised cockatiels and lovebirds. Most of them are not identified by a closed ring (which proves it’s a hand raised chick since a closed ring can be inserted only the first or second day of life), but it’s evident they are captive born.
Problems start when these chicks are sold (or “given”) too early, in order to allow the adoptive family to feed and care the animal till it’s old enough to eat by itself. Unfortunately, a high percentage of this babies die of alimentary problems. The moment of weaning is specially critical, and it implies a peak of mortality.
We can see at the practice some halffeathered chicks which are being hand raised by goodwill people who normally have a lack of knowledge about this difficult task.
For this reason, we must discourage the purchase of hand raised chicks before the weaning. We presume the reasons for selling them that young are saving time and money. But mortality rate rises…
Sometimes chick are doing well for a few days or weeks, but when they start eating without or help they lose a lot of weight, stop being active and die. In some other cases, chicks are unable to overcome the stress of being put apart of their first human “parents”, an often long trip, and a new home and “parents”.
Hand raising a chick is like raising any other
species baby: you must look after them all the time. You cannot leave them while you go to work and feed them just 3 times a day. Even if we feed them the same moment day after day, we must pay a lot of attention to temperature, humidity and cleanliness. The only advantage in case of birds is they don’t eat at night, but you must keep them warm 24 hours a day.
The most difficult cases are those implying very young hand raised large parrot chicks and they die a few days later. Unfortunately many purchases are still sugar coated as gifts, so there is no bill nor any other kind of document. Seller gets rid of the animal and there is no warranty or responsibility. Breeder usually offers some very basic (and insufficient) recommendations (x ml x times a day), and nothing else. Even well trained people can be surpassed when a healthy chick gets very ill in a matter of hours.
So please, don’t buy excessively young animals. It’s ok they are home born instead of being taken from the nature, but they should go to their new home only when they are old enough to be autonomous. Owners don’t have the knowledge of which is the ideal temperature (crop burns in chicks are terrible, and nearly impossible to treat) and texture of the baby food, what to do if it starts vomiting, how many grams should the chick put every day… and if something fails it’s your fault.
If you finally decide to buy and exotic bird, please use your common sense. Hand raising doesn’t make us chick “parents”. It will be a tamed animal, never a domestic one, since it will be used to people, but this behaviour is not “recorded” at their gene as it happens in dogs. As time goes by, its behaviour may vary (some female parrots are often territorial and aggressive).
We think exotic birds shouldn’t be pets. And we know because we have been working with them for 25 years.
Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP
A group of international fans in Gran Alacant regularly watch Elche football games. Home matches see the group usually meeting at different bars around GA, including Reckless Bar, the London Tavern, and Tommy’s. The group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards.
Tickets can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.
Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand.
After an inconsistent start to the season, a great run since a defeat against Almeria in October has meant Elche are in the
conversation for promotion from Segunda - the second division of Spanish football, with a title challenge now ongoing in an incredibly tight league. With some consistency, a return to La Primera is possible.
Home games in March are against two teams from the Valencian region. Castellón travel to Elche on the weekend of 9th March and then there is a local derby against Eldense on the weekend of 23rd March - the date and time of both games are still to be confirmed.
Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!
GA SOCIAL CYCLISTS
There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.
We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.
Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.
As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL
We have welcomed several new faces to our Women’s Walking football sessions, since we restarted following the Christmas break. It has been good to witness the enthusiasm and commitment of the ladies each week and to observe the progress being made.
Amazingly, our over worked coach Jim Fraser returns every week to put us through our paces, teach us new skills and take away the kit to wash - actually that’s wife Kath)! Seriously, we do appreciate the time and effort Jim puts into the role. It is rumoured that Tottenham Hotspur have been in touch enquiring about his availability to help them out of a hole they find themselves in currently.
There is still ample space for more ladies to join the weekly sessions which take place on a Thursday 11.00hours on the Astroturf pitch at the Sports Centre. It is well researched and evidenced that Walking Football can help improve mobility, socialisation and mental health and wellbeing.
I am pleased to say that we have been enjoying some great games so far this year with many new players enjoying both the football and the social side. There is a variety of nationalities represented which means there could be some extra banter when the Walking Football World Cup comes to the Costa Blanca later this year (more on that in future editions).
Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! If you wish to take part, Gran Alacant Walking Football club meets each Wednesday at 11am on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre (Polideportivo). The cost is only 1 euro per session. Please arrive around 10.50am to allow for teams to be arranged. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are regular social meets (combined with the women’s group) with partners welcome too. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).
Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.
For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events. The next social event will be on the first Tuesday in May with the venue to be confirmed.
SOCIAL GROUP FOR SWEDISH SPEAKERS IN GA!
Ann-Christin Sterner, from Gothenburg, founded a Swedish social group in Gran Alacant a year ago to connect Swedish speakers, foster friendships and mutual support.
The group meets every Wednesday at 13:00 at Texicano Restaurant (Carabassi centre) attracting 20-40 regular attendees. Sterner plans to expand activities as interest in the group continues to grow.
