Hello everyone Well. we needed rain and we did get a little, but even getting small amounts make you realise how lucky we are living here, even in winter we only get rain for short times, not the grey cold rainy days we were used to in winter time before we moved here. By the time the magazine goes to the printer MABs will have held their Crazy Show at Los Belgas and are sure it would have been a great success. Look out for their advert in the magazine for their Christmas get-together and table top sale at Molly Malones. This is such a worthwhile cause to support. Some of our advertisers are now advertising Christmas Lunches, it is hard to believe Christmas is getting very near, where has this year gone??? Our prize wordsearch winners last month were:Ann Corrigan & Marion 00447984229086 Lots of local pictures in this months issue. You can see more pictures taken at different events on our website at:www.granalacantadvertiser.com If you would like a copy of any of the pictures, just email us at the magazine.

Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at the Tourist info office.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Dear Barry & sandra, I sent you an email last month asking if you would ask Loreto if and when the swimming pool in Santa Pola would be finished, or what was happening with it. I see it was not in this month´s mag so did you manage to ask her or did you forget? Best wishes Val Haynes The swimming pool is 85% finished and the problems are still going through court procedure. -------------------------------------An email to us which we totally agree with:-

Dear Sandra and Barry, I am so frustrated! Since buying my property in Spain 7 years ago, month after month I get to read the same letters in your publication, those referring to dog mess! Yes it clearly is a massive problem and in my opinion it is actually getting worse not better. Which leads me to ask what is actively being done to combat the problem. OK some fines have been given out but this deterrent alone is clearly not being effective. What is needed is education. In the UK I can clearly remember government campaigns educating dog owners on the need to pick up, the potential risks to children from dog faeces and the introduction of poop a scoops. It seems many Brits got the message as when I return to the UK, I am not dodging nearly so many mounds of mess on the streets as I

4

have to on my own urbanisation here. Have similar education campaigns ever been tried in Spain? How much would it cost the local council to put up posters on bill boards doing something similar? Posters, written in both English and Spanish, could also include the threat of a fine and possibly even name and shame those who are fined. If such a campaign was presented correctly and was 'in your face' then dog owners would be unable to claim ignorance. Also, if the council is serious about fining offending owners all they need to do is wait with cameras in the worst affected areas eg. waste ground opposite Huggin and munnin, waste ground down by the school roundabout etc. Judging by the amount of mess, they should be making hundreds of thousands, not the paltry 7000 euros, which equates to a total of just 10 fines! The money they raise could not only pay for the education campaign but also the provision of pooh bag stations. In Quesada, such stations are situated all over the place, providing dog owners with free bags. These work not because the bags are free but because they are a visual reminder to dog owners of their obligation to keep the community looking presentable. These bag stations are also provided in places such as Alfaz del Pi, Torrevieja and La Zenia, to name but a few, so why are there non visible on Gran Alacant or in Santa Pola? I myself am a dog owner who

ALWAYS picks up after his dog and nothing makes me more angry than irresponsible owners (of any nationality) who lack the understanding to do the same! Don't just fine them, make them spend a day clearing one of the affected areas! Kind regards Michael Monte y mar Gran Alacant This subject led to the usual lengthy discussion about this continuing problem and the matter will be looked into again. Loreto wants to remind everyone that the illegal rubbish dumping which includes mattress and furniture also dog fouling will be met with heavy €700 euro fines. -------------------------------------Hi Barry & Sandra To correct the article regarding Elche bus from Santa Pola:

1. I got a bus from Elche hospital to Elche bus station specially to purchase a 10 bono ticket (advertised in GA advertiser) as it is the only place you can purchase one. I was told that you can only purchase a bono card with 20 trips and only 1 person can use it so a couple requires 2 cards and 20 trips each are a lot to use unless you are going to the hospital or visiting Elche on a regular basis. On other routes the tram and Baile bus the whole family can use the one ticket. 2. The bus no longer accepts the bus card for pensioners which before we were able to get 30% off the fare there are now no discounts available. Margaret Thank you for the info Margaret, we can only pass on the information given to us

6

-------------------------------------Just a quick e-mail in response to a question in this month´s magazine

Living here permanently with two children, I use the surgery on a fairly regular basis and have never had anything other than a positive experience. In fact, on several occasions, the receptionists have ´gone the extra mile´, pushing for quicker specialist appointments, explaining where to go at the hospital, etc. I speak Spanish but I have seen the same courtesy and patience extended to people who don´t with the receptionists trying their best in English. I am sure there are odd times when nerves get frayed but I haven´t seen it. Regards Alison Craig

Any other views? Is it a problem that there is no English spoken? -------------------------------------ANTON RUN The track and field sports event returned Sunday October 14 in the Abel Antón VII Fun Run, organized by the Association of European Residents of Gran Alacant with the cooperation of the City and the Athletics Club. The main novelty of this year is that many of the adult racers passed, for the first time, through the woodlands of Santa Pola. "They wanted to promote the town's natural resources and increase awareness of our natural environment. We hope participants enjoyed the new course. Like every year, the popular athlete Abel Anton, who has a second home in Gran Alacant attended. There were also changes in the children's circuit and although the starting point was the same, a private development

GASP Theatre Group

Were you "Round and Round the Garden" on Sunday 14 or Monday 15 October when Gran Alacant's very own theatre group GASP presented this adult comedy by well-known playwright Alan Akybourn in the Santa Pola Life Resort? If not, then you missed a treat. This was the sixth production by this amateur group and as with the previous productions, it was well received by an appreciative audience. Director, Chris Rooke got the best out of his cast, while set designer, Terry Lacey transformed a small bare stage into a pretty English garden enhanced by a backcloth provided by assistant director Lucia Valcarcel. The verdict of the audience was a great evening's entertainment and great value at only â‚Ź5. GASP will shortly be making a donation to the Cruz Roja, Santa Pola from the profits. Continue to read the "Advertiser" for news of GASP's next production, and if YOU fancy treading the boards, or helping out backstage, we are always keen to recruit more talent. No previous experience needed! For further information contact David Ashley on 966 181 113 or email gasptheatre@hotmail.co.uk. Many thanks to Barry and Sandra for their support in carrying our publicity.

On a bitterly cold winter's morning a husband and wife were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snowploughs can get through". So the good wife went out and moved her car as instructed. A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, "We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snowploughs can get through". The good wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast when the which drops off and picks up, radio announcer said, "We are expecting all around Gran Alacant :12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park ......." Then the power went off. The Mornings start at 09.30 from good wife was very upset, and with a shopping centre, and worried look on her face she said, "I don't every 30 minutes until 13.30 know what to do. Which side of the street ending also at shopping centre. do I need to park on so the snowploughs can get through?" Then, with all the love Afternoon: Shopping centre and understanding in his voice, that men from 17.30 to 19.00 who are married to blondes always exhibit, the husband replied "Why don't and finish at you just leave the bloomin car in the shopping centre a 19.00 garage this time?"

Hi everybody! Just a few words as there aren’t too many activities this month. No Moors and Christians parades in November, however there is still something to go and have a look at, the biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina 1st to the 4th of November, Cocentaina is next to Alcoy. The fair is divided in many areas: medieval, street market, agriculture trade, typical products and more. You will be able to find all kind of products there. You will need, at least, half a day to see it all. Fiestas in Benidorm from 9th to 12 with music, fireworks. I suppose you know how we, Spanish people, go to cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives, even if I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that day, the first of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place with all these thousand of flowers. Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, Onil, Benidorm. Bye- bye friends.

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

Shortbread

One of the simplest, easiest biscuits to make. Delicious buttery, crumbly shortbread. The biscuit dough can be shaped and frozen, simply defrost in fridge before baking and you can have shortbread to eat another time. Eat on its own or serve with a chocolate mousse or ganache for a special occasion.

Ingredients

125g plain flour pinch salt 63g rice flour 125g butter (unsalted) + extra to grease baking sheet 63g sugar + extra for sprinkling

Optional extras for flavour

choc chips orange or lemon zesta almond extract

Method

Grease a baking sheet and set to one side. Use butter for flavour. Put the flours and salt into a large bowl. Rub in the butter, just as you would for pastry. Add the sugar and any extras. Using your fingers, gather and squeeze the mix until it holds together, then tip onto counter top to knead into a smooth ball. Flour surface lightly and roll out to the size of a tea plate, about 7 inches. Put onto greased tray. Pinch dough between finger and thumb around the edge to make it look pretty. Mark into wedges with a sharp knife, you can use a round cookie cutter for the centre if you want, prick all over with a fork. Place in fridge for at least 30 min to chill. Bake in a pre heated oven (not fan) at 160c (320F) for about 35 min or until deep golden brown. Mark slices again and sprinkle with sugar. Allow to cool for at leas 10 min, before moving to wire rack.

Message from the Club Chairman.

This is the seventh time that Monte Mar Bowls Club has staged the Santa Pola Mixed Rinks Event. Each time it has been sponsored by the Santa Pola Council and this year was no exception. I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Mayor, Miguel Zaragoza, our councillor, Loreto Cascales and all our other friends at the council who work so hard with us to have made this such a prestigious event. Over the years we have strived to make this one of the friendliest tournaments in the Bowling Year and our efforts have been rewarded by attracting teams from as far away as Almeria and also from the UK. This years event was as friendly and as successful as previous years. This year we had increased the number of teams involved from 24 to 32 and increased the length of the tournament from 3 to 4 days. We hoped that this made the tournament better than ever and the old favourites such as giftbags and player’s dinner was part of the overall event. Good Bowling. Michael Farrelly (Chairman).

Message from the Mayor of Santa Pola. As Mayor of Santa Pola and on be half of the people of Santa

Pola, it was a great pleasure for me to welcome the competitors, to the 7th Edition of Bowling Championship. This big tournament has opened up space in our programme of the most distinguish sportive events throughout the year. Since the dawn of civilization, we are people that not only have allowed the cultural exchange amongst civilizations, but also have witnessed the mingling of culture. Now, in the middle of the 21st century, we continue showing our cultural exchange by sharing this British tradition as it is the practice of bowling. You have taught us this sport, and now we practise it, specially our Town Councillor, Ms. Lola Cascales. This tournament is another necessary step on the road towards fully integration of British citizens into Santa Pola´s society, because it will enable us to share our traditions and heritage with you. There is no better way to get to know each other than being fully involved in both cultures. This Bowling Championship is also the perfect excuse to know through the practice of this sport, our city, our beaches, our climate, our culture, our gastronomy and the charming attitude of our people. Santa Pola City Council will continue supporting these initiatives that foster coexistence and cultural understanding, sport and tourism. I hope you enjoyed your stay amongst us. Miguel Zaragoza Fernández (Mayor of Santa Pola)

best summed up by the past tense edited comments below, from the official programme.

We at the magazine are constantly amazed at the amount of work and organising that takes place within this club, all voluntary, all for free. Not just this event, but the many organised trips, holidays, dinners, and many other club events. Anyone can join this social club as there is no need to be a bowler.

FELINE SKIN PROBLEMS

This month we are going to write about feline skin, a matter which is frequently forgotten due to the bigger importance which is normally given to canine skin characteristics and problems. To begin with, we would like to remind cats fur grows approximately 1 cm per month, and after remaining a short time with its maximum length on the animal, it falls. This implies shorthair cats renew their fur every month, and longhair ones every 6 or 7 months, depending on the maximum length of the fur. Cats which live indoors loose the natural regulation of photoperiod very often, because of the artificial home illumination, which make them not to recognize the differences between day and night through the four seasons. This condition makes them shed all year round in most cases. Cats which live outdoors normally have a molting period every season. Cats clean themselves daily, so they swallow a certain amount of dead fur every day. For this reason is very important to provide them some malt jelly in order to dissolve furballs, which may produce them some digestive problems.

The feline behavior of self-cleaning has another two implications: -If we detect a poor coat (dirty, knotty, etc) caused by a lack of self-cleaning, it normally indicates the animal is ill, has pain at the mouth, or maybe is too fat for reaching properly all the body surface. -All we put on the cats fur, is swallowed during self-cleaning: perfumes, hair conditioners, ground, live or dead parasites, etc. This is how the cat “self-transmits” Dipylidium caninum, an intestinal tapeworm which lives inside the fleas. When the cat swallows a flea, it gets destroyed by stomach acids, and the larvae get released in the lumen of the small intestine of the cat, and after a few days we will see at the cat motions and around the anus lots of rice grain-like parts of the adult worm body. Treating this problem is very easy, despite re-infestations are very common, and it will consist, of course, on a worming plus flea treatment for cutting definitively the cycle. A typical skin problem in cats is fungal infections, even more than in dogs, and it’s particularly common in rescued street or shelter kittens, which are been living under poor conditions. Fungi make the fur fall, and normally they are not itchy (in case of human skin, they really are). Transmission to other pets or humans is quite common, but it doesn’t imply a big health problem. The treatment in pets and humans is simple, but it takes a minimum of 3 weeks to be sure the problem is really gone. Apart from treating the animal, the environment must be disinfected by using bleach and water. Apart from fleas and fungi, another typical skin problem in cats is ear mites infestation. It can be easily detected because it makes the ear produce a black dirt similar to coffee, and it’s very itchy. Feline ear mites are extremely contagious for cats, but not for dogs or humans. The treatment is very easy due to the modern anti-mite pipettes, but the definitive environmental control of the problem may be difficult in some cases, because the mites may survive for several months out of the cat. Skin allergic problems are less common in cats than in dogs, and the diagnosis may be difficult in some cases, because sometimes we cannot be a 100% sure the animal is not finding any extra food when going out, or is fighting or playing with another cats. Besides, it’s hard to find fleas or flea motions on the fur, because cats are constantly cleaning themselves. For all these reasons, feline dermatology is a bigger challenge for the practitioner than canine one.

If you go down to the Carabassi bars for your breakfast, it is guaranteed that you will have an admiring audience watching you eat. They will become even more admiring if you accidentally drop some crumbs from your table onto the floor, and once you do this your popularity is assured. The House Sparrows know where the food is to be had, and will return to the same place on a daily basis, and I could swear that some of them have been taking posing lessons as they try to look as cute as possible to ensure that you share some of your toast with them. by Other birds also know where the good places are for Mark Etheridge food, and it is thanks to this dedication to a particular area that last month I managed to get a sighting of a very rare bird indeed. First spotted by Barry Chambers of the Costa Blanca Bird Club at a site near El Hondo reserve, the news spread through the club's grapevine online, and thanks to Mary Brazier who gave me precise directions, I managed to get this shot of a Black-winged Kite, also known as the Black-shouldered Kite or Elanio comĂşn in Spanish. Despite the Spanish name, it is not at all common, indeed there are only an estimated 700-1000 pairs in Spain, which it has only colonised since the early 1970's. It is a widespread bird in Sub-Saharan Africa, and across equatorial areas of Asia, and the Spanish population seems to be increasing. The reason why it was easy to find after Barry's first report, is that it tends to stay in the same area to hunt and feed, and its habit of sitting on an exposed perch to survey the surrounding area makes it easy to see, and was in the same area for several days at least. However, it also seemed to be very good at spotting bird photographers, and would not let me get too close before it flew off. It favoured a row of old electricity pylons, and even after I trudged back to my car once it had flown away I saw that it had returned to exactly the same pylon! This Kite is one of the smaller birds of prey, about the same size as a Kestrel, and as you can see is quite distinctive in appearance. It feeds on small mammals such as rats and mice, ground-dwelling birds, lizards and insects. Looking back through reports of this bird in Spain, it is quite a rarity in our area, but there are at least three reports of this bird from the Clot during autumn and winter over the past few years, so it may well reappear right on our doorsteps.

WHAT’S THAT?

IN THE CLOT?

See you next month.
