We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Broken Bin I am sat reading your latest edition and the piece about bins and cleaning. I have contacted Urbaser 3 times on their Facebook page that our grey bin has been broken for 5 weeks now, it first started after the truck damaged it so only one side would open using the foot pedal but you still had to lift it the rest of the way. Now the foot pedal is broken completely and it will only open if you are strong enough to push the lid up. With this problem people just leave there rubbish on the floor attracting rats and feral cats. I asked our administrator to help and he said he would talk to the local councillor who told him he would inform the Town Hall, to date nothing has happened when there is a mess a lot of residents clean it up maybe we shouldn't! This bin is on Carabassi 9 outside Mediterranio 3 - the grey one part of the re cycling. I had one message back from urbaser telling me my address was wrong but what I sent to them WASN'T but sent it again anyway. Hope you can help. Thank you Patrick Update 14/9: Hi I sent you an email about the rubbish bins on Avenida Del Carabassi out side Mediterranio 3 and you said to keep you updated, well nothing has happened. Our admin said he would give info to our load councillor and Urbaser still don't respond to Facebook messages. I sent the first message to Urbaser on the 16th of July so it is almost 3 months now.
Gran Alacant Advertiser Reply: Together with Oscar we found the bin and tested it. He agreed it’s broken and in urgent need of replacement. Please keep us informed. We hope to have better news from you for our next issue. Q: Road Signs Hi Lou & Ged, A couple of questions for the Ayuntamiento. What have they done with Puerto Marino? It used to be Avda. Finlandia.
There are two pedestrian crossings outside the Gran Mundo restaurant on a particularly difficult junction. Could the Town Hall arrange to give drivers a fair chance by making signs visible? Kind Regards, Terry
Looks like nobody is interested bit they are advertising on how to pay your Sums for these services. Thank you.

Gran Alacant Advertiser Reply: Oscar informed us the tree should be cut in the next couple of days to make the road sign visible and he took a photo of the incorrect road sign to get corrected.
We as residents of GA also deserve to live in a nice community, not a concrete jungle ! Keep up the great work with the magazine Best Regards Fiona
Q: Untidy GA Dear Lou & Ged Can you please bring to the attention, again, of our Councillor the rubbish that is lining the path edges, on the main road, leading down to the GA Centre.
Gran Alacant Advertiser Reply: Thank you Fiona. Oscar told us the council is aware of this problem. The old contract with the cleaning company/gardeners etc. was done many years ago based on population of 6000 residents. This contract is now insufficient and new contract is being prepared to address all these issues. It was planned to be finalised by the end of this year, but due to Covid 19 everything has been delayed. The new cleaning/gardening contract should be finished in the next 6 months.
Attached are a couple of pictures of just some of the rubbish that is causing a major eyesore on what is a main route up to GA I regularly see a council worker on Avenue Mediterraneo sweeping up leases, which is fine as I know this also needs to be done, but why oh why are there not more resources put into collecting this litter. As was previously noted this litter is not being caused by tourists to GA as there are none, & there certainly won't be any either coming to GA if the area is not kept clean On another note, why are the trees that are missing from all the areas around GA not being replaced.
Why does the Council not re plant with mature, local trees, that are guaranteed to thrive in this climate. They should also protect the trees from any potential damage with railings They need to also invest in flower planting on street corners etc. This is done in other towns in Spain so why not GA ??? The Council need to improve GA & make it more tourist friendly, especially after the devastation COVID has brought to local businesses, otherwise nicer areas of Spain will benefit once people start to travel again.

LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
Meeting with the Gran Alacant Neighbourhood Association On August 17, after several unsuccessful attempts due to COVID-19, I was finally able to have a meeting with the Gran Alacant Neighborhood Association.
I want to thank Mayor Loreto Serrano and Chief of Police JosĂŠ Miguel Zaragoza for attending. It is important for residents to know that the Santa Pola City Council is interested in our neighbourhood and the issues and concerns we have. Meeting on 17 August 2020 with Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Valenzuela, Mayor Loreto Serrano and Police Chief Jose Miguel Zaragoza. SUMMARY The meeting lasted for three hours and was

attended by representatives from many of the Urbanisations within Gran Alacant although the number was limited due to COVID-19 Protocols. PARAGLIDING The residents of Brisas del Daro, Olivo de Oro and El Faro raised this issue. The official position of the association is that they recommend that this activity is regulated by the Council. The Gran Alacant Councillor explains that the recruitment and allocation of staff is long and complicated at this time. He said that a proposal has been finalised to give the use of the space to the paragliding club so that they take responsibility for it, establish insurance for third parties and ensure that it is separated from the urbanisation, with clear signs and regulations etc. The local police, want to put a protocol in place so that they are informed every time a flight is possible. Although this is not the solution desired by the association, it is an improvement. URBAN PLANNING PROBLEMS The problems of Calle MĂŠnsula, Calle Canarias and UrbanizaciĂłn Panorama are mentioned and the Councillor confirmed that all of these issues are being treated individually with representatives from each urbanization. Other urban planning issues discussed were the width of pavements, drainage and connections, etc. There are many areas of pavements with sufficient width but the location of the street lights make them difficult to use. The mayor says that it is difficult to find a solution in the areas that have already been developed especially given the current budget problems and other spending priorities in the neighborhood. In the new developments the correct plans have been followed. Note after the meeting: it was agreed to carry out an initiative to make visible the problems of pavement width and

accessibility by disabled people. ROAD ACCESS TO GRAN ALACANT With regard to the improvement of the road entry and exit of Gran Alacant, the councilman reports that after delays and cancellations due to COVID-19 there was a meeting with the General Director of roads in Alicante in July. There are two road projects pending approval in Madrid: 1) Adequacy of the filter lane in the direction of Santa Pola with connection to the road of Balsares. The Mayoress reported that a project with land ceded since 2015 by the City Council and worth 230,000 euros exists. 2) The filter lane to the N-332 from Gran Alacant in the direction of Alicante. It has been requested by the Town Hall that they put speed reducers and / or radar. They will not move the current radar that is down the hill from Santa Pola as its location is necessary. The mayoress informs that for this request there is a larger project that dates from 2017 with an amount of several million euros. However, it has been rejected due to the lack of regional budget for its development. The mayoress confirms that the council has requested the drafting of a new, cheaper project that will improve the entrances and exits in a sufficient way, based on the cancelled one. Asked about the deadlines for these projects, the councillor said that the first one should be tendered this year, depending on the evolution of COVID-19 and the second one will be delayed a little longer. The mayor will continue to put pressure on Valencia and Madrid for a speedy resolution to these issues. Post-Meeting Note: the association has requested that the road connection from Balsares towards Gran Alacant be studied and for an improvement to the 1.4km section of the road to Balsares. The Mayoress confirms that this area is still

subject to the development of a golf course and that there is a company currently interested in this project. If this goes ahead, it will include the redevelopment of this whole area. GARDENING, RUBBISH AND CLEANING Numerous complaints about deficiencies in all these services were passed to the Mayoress and Councillor. The Councillor again explained that the current services are insufficient and that the new specifications for street cleaning, rubbish collection, cleaning and clearing could be agreed by the end of September. The Mayoress will then draw up, tender and award the contract, hopefully by the summer of 2021. Regarding gardening, the Mayoress apologizes for the deficiencies, especially the situation of the park on CarabassĂ Avenue which the Mayoress will visit with the municipal technician to evaluate it, along with the area of the mountain that is detailed in another section. HUNTING PRESERVE AND POOR CONDITION OF THE MOUNTAIN There is a debate about the use of the forest by hunters. The Mayoress explained that a limitation of the reserve has been drawn up to make sure its use is compatible with those using it for recreational activities. From the association although the majority position, but not unanimous, is against hunting, the reduction of the reserve is seen as a positive advance that will allow the routes by the lighthouse and much of the outside of the mountain to be used without incidents. From the association the bad state of the mountain with dead trees, growing bald spots and possible diseases was again highlighted. They insist on arranging a visit with the municipal technician and the Mayoress to evaluate this problem and other gardening activities. When asked about the maintenance of the roads and signs in the mountains, the Councillor said that they will be addressed within the European project URBACT mobility and he will keep the association informed.

SECURITY - LOCAL POLICE AND GUARDIA CIVIL The Chief of Police was asked about improving the relationship with the Police by appointing a middleman. The Chief of Police confirmed that this will be a secondtier policeman but that he is not available yet. He is asked about the Police presence in the neighborhood and if there really is a patrol car that is here 24 hours a day. He confirmed that this really is the case and only in the case that they are needed to help with an emergency will they leave Gran Alacant. He is told that the Police presence seems insufficient and that there is a sense of insecurity. In this regard, he comments that Santa Pola is by far one of the safest locations in terms of crime, incidents, and other measures, with much lower rates in the Gran Alacant neighbourhood where he himself lives. The installation of cameras and roadblocks in Gran Alacant is currently being discussed. These would help with keeping crime figures down and combating the perception of a low Police presence. The Mayoress indicates that a project to install a Police Office currently exists and needs to be included in the future budgets. The optimal location would be at the entrance to Gran Alacant in front of the shopping centre and once the budget has been approved it will go ahead. The old debate of hiring janitors and security personnel in the urbanizations, whether all year round or in the Summer Season was again discussed as neighbours report problems of communication with the Police. From the association we think that with a middleman coordinating everything, an effective private control could be improved and encouraged to overcome the deficiencies or at least improve the situation. In the same vein, there is a debate about the need to expand the workforce, at least in Summer. The Mayoress comments that it is not possible to expand the staff temporarily for legal reasons. Years ago additional Police reinforcements could be hired however now they can only increase overtime.

protocols due to COVID-19. The school requested that 5 additional prefabricated classrooms were installed and the playground be divided into 9 zones, one per age group, but this has been denied. The Town Council has asked for explanations but has only received a generic response which give the impression that they are not going to be attended to. The reply confirmed that the school can make use of nearby parks.
Finally, policeman Roberto, in charge of the disinfection of the urbanizations due to COVID-19, presented a summary of the actions taken, for which he was congratulated. He was also asked about the cleaning and disinfection protocols and he said he will provide these details to the association. Note after the meeting: At the end of the meeting the Chief of Police was asked about dog excrement, surveillance and sanction campaigns, abandoned cars, parking lot at the lighthouse viewpoint and other issues. He said that there will be an additional meeting with members of the association to discuss these issues. GRAN ALACANT MUNICIPAL OFFICE The Mayoress reports that the administrative position is approved but there has been a delay in filling this position, but they have hired two technicians. The Gran Alacant Councillor said that this was covered by social collaboration staff, that are no longer available. SECOND PRIMARY SCHOOL AND INSTITUTOS(HIGH SCHOOL) About the second Primary school, the Councillor says that he continues to demand it goes for bidding every month, since it is the last step that remains and everything has stopped since COVID-19. He indicates that there is a lot of uncertainty about what will happen with the Edificant plans, since there may be a lack of funding. Among them is the construction of the IES (High School). There have been additional delays as there has been an urgent focus on ensuring that the school can meet the new safety
The most worrying thing in the school is the contract for the cleaning which was expected to be finished by June, but has been delayed until December. The Councillor said that, given the complication to hire staff through normal channels, they have implemented a new urgent cleaning contract. Note after the meeting: Regarding the overcrowding, everything remains the same and it is not possible for the classes of students to be below 20, in line with COVID-19 Protocols without the additional portacabins. However, the parks have been conditioned and cleared, some road safety adjustments have been made (fences, signs, bus stop) for the entrances and exits of the school and the police presence has been reinforced. GRAN ALACANTS PERFORMANCE AND PPS BUDGET In line with the above, the Mayoress presented a report on how the Public Land Trust (PPS) is going to spend an estimated 1.7 million Euros in Santa Pola, with more than half being allocated to Gran Alacant. The most important issues are the roads and the second school, which were paralyzed with an allocated budget of only 1 euro and will now have a budget of 803,409 euros. The next item of interest is the sustainable urban mobility plan, which in Gran Alacant will involve a study of traffic and the adequacy of signage and maintenance of roads in the mountains. Finally there is 76,340 euros to solve the problem of ownership of the street MĂŠnsula, which is pending legal justification and a signature from the Secretary of the Council. ONGOING EDUCATIONAL ISSUES IN GRAN ALACANT On Monday 31st August we had a meeting with the management of the Primary School in Gran Alacant (CEIP Vicenta Ruso) to check that all the preparations for the beginning of the new school year are going as well as possible under the circumstances. A colleague from the Department of Education said, "we are not getting any response from the Department to our requirements. We hope that when the pandemic emergency subsides, the Generalitat Valenciana will take more interest in the Gran Alacant neighborhood and our urgent education needs". From the Education Department of the Santa Pola City Council I want to make it known to the public the reality in which we find ourselves before the imminent start of the new term in the different educational centres of our town. Prior to the start of this school year, we have completed the pertinent procedures with the different regional bodies and school centres to request a new Instituto and a second primary school in Gran Alacant.
we welcome the Students back for the new year and, if necessary, we will contact the Ministry of Health again to highlight our school needs. MOSQUITO CONTROL After the recent torrential rains at the beginning of September and in coordination with the Department of Health, fumigation has been reinforced in the areas of proliferation of mosquitoes, to help prevent a pest problem. Additionally, they continue to coordinate with the neighboring municipalities to make it as effective as possible. FLOOD PREVENTION The Department of Cleaning, Parks and Gardens and Hidraqua, have undertaken additional cleaning of the exterior and interior drains and also areas indicated by the Neighborhood Association, to try to address the most problematic areas. These works were carried out in a systematic way, with the aim to prevent the potentially dangerous situations that arise when we have severe heavy rainfall or a "DANA" (Gota Fria).
We have listened to the requests from the Directors and the concerns of the AMPAS of the schools, in regard to their ability to implement the new stricter hygiene and social distancing measures that have been imposed by the Department of Education. These measures are to ensure a safe return to the classrooms for the students, teachers and workers of the educational centres and that is why today we come to denounce the great problem of overcrowding that still exists in the CEIP Vicenta Ruso School of Gran Alacant and the IES Cap de l'aljub Instituto in Santa Pola. The Department of Education has still not provided the resources for the solutions to this problem. The constant communications with the parents of students and the management of the centre have been of no use to highlight the problem to Valencia, since they still do not offer us a real and effective solution. For this reason, in the school council meeting that has had to be delayed, we will deal with the remaining issues before

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS
Sorry I could not make the deadline for the September edition. It was already for editor Lou when I ended up in hospital for 11 days. Do not suppose anybody missed my column!!!!!!!! HOSPITAL I have in the past spoken about how good the Elche hospital is. If anyone is a bit nervous about going in there, just email on laneinspain@hotmail.com with your concerns and I may be able to answer your questions. CLUBS There are many social groups on Gran Alacant, for golfers, bike riders, walkers, walking football etc etc. If there are clubs that would like a mention in my news, just email to me at laneinspain@hotmail.com
cater for every need and we enjoy quizzes, bingo, trips out etc. We are always ready to welcome new members, so come along and join us. See you soon. RUBBISH……AGAIN Our refuse men must despair when they pull up to the waste bins here in certain areas on Gran Alacant. In some places rubbish is strewn everywhere around the bins. Plastic bottles are put into the bin whole, instead of treading on them so you can get more in the bin. Similar with boxes, why are they put in the bin whilst whole, why not just fold them down so they go in a small flat pack. THE WALL
SPORTS HALL I see that the Town Hall have paid to resurface the padal courts at the sports centre, but still nowhere on Gran Alacant for the footballers with no artificial surface to play on. If you want to play football you have to go to one of the many pitches in Santa Pola. School children on Gran Alacant cannot enjoy playing on their own urbanisation. Even the Gran Alacant walking football club, which I started up a few years ago, has had to relocate to Santa Pola… what a shame! Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: We have great plans for GA Sports centre. We realise a lot needs to be improved as is has become insufficient in size as well. Not only we are planning to resurface the floors, we are also planning to expand the sports centre. However, we are only in the beginning of this project and it’s going to take more time, planning and financing. ¨The Fit/Fat Club¨ A group of ladies who have been meeting every Wednesday for 15 years at 12-30 called ¨The Fit/Fat Club¨ are a friendly bunch who enjoy lunch at Aquarius restaurant at the Carabassi Centre. The food is great. Angie and Mac the hosts,

Thank you for painting the wall!!! ********** Why is it that once the darkness of the night arrives does it unleash loads of youngsters running around in the dark. There are cars motobikes and scooters on the roads in the urbanisations waiting for an accident to happen. The kids are 100s of yards away from their Mums and Dads properties, why are they not looking out for their kids. Remember the McCan family. **********

LOS ARENALES In Los Arenales adjacent to Gran Alacant, more and more areas are being built on, mostly flats. More people for the beaches and of course more and more of us needing spaces to park our cars.
TRAIN
So sad to see the Gran Alacant train parked up all summer due to an accident with one of the carriages. Greatly missed by tourists and residents alike.
One of the biggest areas for parking has all now been fenced off and ready for more building. Parking which is usually a nightmare will be even worse
TIGER Watch out, there’s a tiger about. Could have escaped from Santa Pola Safari park. BARKING DOGS An email to me: ¨Can anything be done about dogs constantly barking... the owners are in the houses but allow their dogs to constantly bark outside... many times the dogs are barking so early in the mornings or late at night... and sometimes during the night... It's the same houses with dogs barking every day ... it's so unfair on neighbours READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

who have to listen to this horrendous noise every day. I've contacted the president's and administration and they said they would contact these ones but nothing has changed...can you let me know if anything can be done. I dont see why they can't take the dogs in the house instead of leaving them to bark all day. I am told to call the police ... that's what they said to me... but these streets are gated so by the time the police come ... the dogs may have stopped barking”. We have asked Oscar for the correct procedure to follow. Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: The advice you have been given is correct. Firstly, talk about the problem with the president of your community. Secondly, if that doesn’t help call the Local Police. That is the correct procedure. ART AND CRAFT Would you like to join a small art and crafts club who meet every Tuesday at 11am down in Arenales at the Los Palmeros restaurant. All it costs is to buy a drink and then the chance for a chat and a meet up. For more info phone Barbara on 609 352 356
3. We have no functioning medical centre. The GA app gives no appointments. If you call. No one speaks English. (You cant pay a translator for hours hoping you get through) ... Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: The app is the responsibility of Conselleria de Sanidad and at the moment all appointments must be made by phone. Also, the phone gives incorrect signal when the line is busy giving an impression there is no-one to answer the call, however the signal is incorrect and the line is engaged due to the number of phone calls. Please be patient as we are hoping this situation will be resolved soon. 4. We have no Ayuntamiento in GA, and Santa Pola are so unfriendly and unhelpful. Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: Yes, we are aware of this problem and working hard to find solution and better premises for the new municipal office. PARKING Can you believe it?! Parents picking up kids from the school park right across the entry and exit gates to peoples houses. How selfish and thoughtless can you get!!!
OBSERVATIONS A reader sent me a few observations. 1.The Dog Park in GA. is an absolute mess and has not been cleaned or taken care of at all. Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: We have discussed this problem with ASPETGA, gardeners and general cleaning services at URBASER and the dog park has been cleaned and the gardeners are trimming the area as we speak. We are also planning to replace the bins, repaint the benches and improve the water fountain. 2. The dog beach (Gossets) is half the size it was before and the parking gives no buffer to the road which is dangerous for dogs. It's a total mess too. Oscar Valenzuela’s reply: The dog beach is the responsibility of Ministry of coasts and the parking issues are responsibility of Guardia civil. We will make them aware of these issues.
ROBBERY An elderly lady friend of ours, who walks with a stick, was getting into an empty lift at the GA centre, when at the last minute, 5 others got in and started talking to her, yes you have guessed it, she then went for a coffee and when looking for her money, found that her wallet which included her driving licence had been stolen. So watch out for these scum-bags. ACCIDENT Just come by another big accident on September 18th, at the Santa Pola turning off the N332. When will they change this death trap. Just build a roundabout!!!

THE CITY COUNCIL MEETS WITH TWO ENTREPRENEURS WHO PRESENT THEIR COWORKING SPACES IN THE TOWN The Santa Pola City Council held a meeting with Diana Carrasco and Mª Angeles Cáceres, local female entrepreneurs, who have just opened two Coworking spaces, one located in downtown Santa Pola and the other in Gran Alacant. The meeting was attended by the Mayoress Loreto Serrano, the Councilor for Commerce Nely Baile, the Councilor for Urbanism and Industry Trini Ortiz and the technician Llanos Córcoles, head of the Emprende Santa Pola Service. The two entrepreneurs, who have been advised by the Emprende Santa Pola service, have presented their projects, explaining that coworking spaces are shared offices in which selfemployed professionals, teleworkers and entrepreneurs from different sectors share the same office space without losing their independence and at a lower cost than having their own office. They tell us that working in a coworking space is like working in a company, but instead of having colleagues in different departments, you are surrounded by other professionals. The spaces are equipped with common areas, and highlight the business opportunities and the synergies that are generated by working in a coworking environment, in addition to saving costs. For this they organise activities, breakfasts, networking, etc., where collaborations are created. In addition, they also rent spaces, even by the hour, so that companies have their own office, where they can hold meetings, etc. Diana Carrasco's SIMPLE SOCIAL HUB coworking space and professional community is located at Avenida Escandinavia, 35, Gran Alacant. They are happy to welcome any interested person to visit them and discuss the different options available. Loreto Serrano has personally congratulated them for these two projects and has highlighted the importance of having spaces of this type in our town, where entrepreneurial ecosystems and the creation of transformative and innovative professional communities are created. They have agreed to visit the two spaces and contemplate the possibility of signing a possible public-private agreement that allows the collaboration of the Entrepreneurs department of the City Council and these two spaces.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB CHICKEN RUN Sunday 30th August Twenty four members played in the August chicken run as we still have to play within the present restrictions. Hopefully the September chicken run will be back to normal. This month we had to have a play off as two teams finished with 16 points. The eventual winners of the chickens were Neil Crawford, Phil Goble and Graham Smythe. Lorraine Roberts, Lynne Armitage and Chris Harding won the eggs.
Thanks to Lynne Armitage and Sheila Roberts who donated the chickens and Julia and Ian Hamilton who donated the eggs. FOOTBALL CARD Dave Yarrow was the winner of the football card with Newcastle. SEPTEMBER TRIPS EVENT Over the weekend of 12/13 of September our club held a trips competition to replace the scheduled Gran Alacant Mixed Rinks event which was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. The event gave us a chance to give our club bowlers something different to the roll – up days. It was also useful to learn some lessons about coping with Covid restrictions within the club. Twelve teams of three were split into two groups and each team played three games over the two days against other teams within their group. Points were scored for every end won and for winning the overall game.

The game was won on the last end of the last game, a Grandstand Finish!! The winning trips were Jack Burrell, James Shearing and Neil Crawford who finished with a score of twenty points. After the game we had a nice meal in the Tavern at the bowls club and that is where the presentation was made by the club chairman, Chris Harding. He thanked the organisers, the caterers, the ladies who had organised a cake stall on the Saturday and all those who took part. DEALING WITH PANIC ATTACKS
We are living in very disconcerting times lately and for some that suffer from panic attacks it can be even worse with all this negativity in the world at the moment. Panic attacks occur during periods of acute anxiety and there are literally millions of people who suffer with this. The symptoms give feelings of intense panic which induce hyperventilating, thus causing lightheadedness and tingling in the fingers and toes caused by a reduction in carbon dioxide in the blood, they have a huge variety of causes, mostly based on fears and phobias, but some sufferers still can’t pin point the reason they are having them. Attacks are hugely linked to adrenal exhaustion and low blood sugars, as much as the causes are all mind related there are several changes you can make to your diet and lifestyle to prevent them from recurring.
You are what you eat ... EAny tinned or pre-packaged foods should be avoided. They are high in salt, which can increase your blood pressure.
EAvoid stimulants, caffeine, refined sugar, and alcohol, which can all, trigger mood swings and disrupt the blood sugar levels.
EEat more calming foods like sweet
potatoes, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, lentils, beans, porridge, peppers, mushrooms, lettuces, vegetables; these foods are slower release carbohydrates, which are essential for stabilizing blood sugar levels.
EEat small meals regularly and never skip a meal.
ESip on water regularly throughout your
day, the subconscious mind relates a dry mouth with danger, which can easily trigger an attack.
ETaking a good high-strength B-complex
daily to help support your nerves and also taking vitamin C daily with meals aids the balance.
ERegular exercise reduces stress and builds confidence. Even if it’s a 30min walk daily… it’s a step in the right direction.
EAromatherapy massage with calming oils is proven to be very effective in relaxing sufferers.
ETapping
(E.F.T. emotional freedom technique) is a great way of stopping the attack in its track. Tapping on the

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

OSPREY
The autumn transition of bird species, when many of them are moving south for the winter, is one of the most exciting times for birdwatchers. Spain is one of the top places to be – not only do all the summer visitors depart, but many others from the north either arrive here to spend the winter, or pass through on their way to even warmer climes south of the Sahara. Spain is a major bird migration route, and just about anything can turn up anywhere. The bird in my picture is a male Osprey, which I took in Scotland on the last day of August this year. During September, he has flown down through the UK, across Europe towards the Straits of Gibraltar, then he will continue down across the Western Sahara to spend the winter in the Guinea/Senegal area. How do I know this? Because Osprey white/black VE (see the ring in the smaller photo) has been monitored from the time it was first ringed as a youngster in Scotland in 2007. There are up to 300 Osprey pairs now nesting in the UK, and most if not all of them migrate through Spain. Whilst it is known that most take a western (through Portugal) or central route (via Madrid), a few have chosen the eastern route which takes them right over our heads here in the Costa Blanca. The autumn migration is taken at a more leisurely pace than the spring migration, which is impelled by the need to breed – in autumn, the birds don’t need to rush, and may spend some time refuelling at suitable sites, one of which is right in our area at the large El Hondo reserve. Of course it is not just the UK birds passing
60 60 60
through, they are joined by others from Northern Europe, and in recent years it has become evident that migrating Ospreys have found our area much to their liking – so much so that increasing numbers of these birds elect to spend the whole of the winter here rather than continuing the hazardous route further south across the Sahara. Some will be first-year youngsters who haven’t fully developed their navigation skills, but adult birds are staying here too, which brings the exciting prospect that they may even stay to breed. There has been a recent attempt to reintroduce the Osprey as a breeding bird in the Pego Marshes, a site just to the south of Valencia, and in the El Hondo reserve artificial Osprey nests have been erected to see if the birds will breed here as well. The Pego birds are youngsters from Germany, and reports indicate that they are doing well. Because Ospreys are easy to find at their nests, bird ringers do a great deal of work to study them, and many birds carry what are known as Darvic Rings as shown in the smaller photo. If you get a good sighting of an Osprey, or better still a good photo, you might be able to read the Darvic Ring – which is designed to be as visible as possible – not only do you need the lettering on the ring, but the colour as well. There are several reporting sites online, just Google “Bird Rings” for sites in most European Languages; they communicate with each other and can tell you a great deal about any bird you report, no matter where it originally came from. You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month

CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
Grooming Service Available #1 Follow strictly antiparasitic and antimicrobial treatments prescribed by the Vet. It’s critical for everyone’s health (this includes animals, people and planet) to use antibiotics correctly. Most antibiotics we use for animals are practically the same ones we use for people; if we “create” resistant bacteria or parasites against veterinary medicines, we are creating at the same time “superbacteria” which affect humans and are very difficult to defeat with antibiotics. For this reason, it’s absolutely necessary to apply the antibiotic treatment till the end and not to abandon it before its time. If, for any reason, you are unable to follow the treatment at home, the Vet (not our neighbour, or Google!) will find a valid alternative for the treatment, such as injections instead of tablets. It’s also very important after the treatment is finished, to deposit the remaining at the right place, which is point SIGRE at chemistries. #2 Don’t let your pet to capture other animals, specially endangered species (which are, for example, practically all the birds you can see outdoors, including sparrows, and all the reptiles such as lizards and snakes). All of them are harmless and absolutely necessary for keeping the ecosystem healthy. There are some exceptions: pigeons, monk parakeets and rats, which are considered a pest and cause a lot of environmental and economical problems. The problem, of course, is dogs and cats are unable to differentiate a monk parakeet and a goldfinch, so the best option is not allow pets to chase wildlife: in case of dogs, keeping our eye on them when going for a walk, and in case of cats, to keep them indoors during the reproductive season of birds (spring) and small rodents. #3 Not to release pets. If we have an exotic (or non-exotic) pet, and we are no longer able to keep it, we must take it to

a shelter. This may sound very logical, but the high number of Vietnamese pigs which run free at Vega Baja countryside, indicates the opposite. Sometimes we don’t release pets on purpose. For example, nowadays having parrots in “semi-liberty” is a trend. It consists on keeping windows open and letting the bird fly free outdoors during the day and it will return to its cage before sunset. What would happen if it doesn’t return, specially if we are talking of a couple? Another example would be if we let go out a non-neutered tomcat. What do you think he will do when queens are in season? #4 Keep your pet healthy. A routine Vet check helps to detect disease before it’s too late, and, of course, to prevent serious diseases via vaccination, tests and antiparasitic treatments. We know we share about 70% of infectious diseases with animals. We also know the best place for every animal and plant is the place where they are coming from (of course, we mean rare and exotic animals and plants, we don’t mean a “Persian” cat will feel better at Persia). All together we can have a better health for people, animals and planet.
