We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Hello Everybody, Just a few words to let you know what is happening in Santa Pola and the surrounding areas this month. In the evening there will be a religious procession and later a display of fire works on the Levante Beach In the surrounding areas, there will be plenty of parades of Moors and Christians. The first week in August, we’ve got parade of Moors and Christians in Aspe. Enjoy yourselves.

Bye-bye my friends ... until next month.

Hello everyone, The UK might be pulling out of Europe but the Russians are definitely coming into Alicante. I was actually talking to a Russian family on Carabassi beach, they spoke very highly of the area and they will spread the word about how much they enjoyed Gran Alacant, so we might need Russian language on the menus soon! On a different note, please folks take care when out and about the bag snatchers/pickpockets are around again, so be on your guard at all times please. Quick hello to our friends Jaime and Uel and their children who had ten great days here. Another family who I am sure will visit Gran Alacant for years to come. Have a great month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 30

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

This month marks to first Anniversary of the new political party at the Town Hall. Would Yolanda like to say anything to our readers? First of all, I want to thank you for this initiative that allows us both to inform and answer the neighborhood questions and to be aware about the main problems which are being referred by the people themselves related to Gran Alacant. Secondly, since last year, the new Government has been opened to the people’s opinion and criteria, enabling new communication ways between the Administration and the citizens, so as all the voices can be listened and all the opinions can be studied. For my Councilors and, of course, for me it is very important to achieve an equity related to public services and infrastructures along the whole town of Santa Pola. And, despite the time that may be necessary in order to perform all the needed actuations in Gran Alacant, little by little we are working to achieve that goal. Q: Big Black Bull Do the Town Hall know what has happened to the big black bull sign on the N332 just outside Santa Pola, on the road to La Marina. It has disappeared! Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this issue, the black bull sign was erected in a private location, so when the Town Hall was aware this sign had fallen down, the owner of that location was told to remove this sign as it wasn’t fixed to the ground and to relocate it. It’s up to the owner to take the appropriate action. Q: School Noise and Parking: Why are we subject to the continual loud music from the GA school. Bars and music venues are soon clamped down, but the school seems to be in a different category. There are many homes within earshot, and workers who are up until late at night, looking to enjoy a sleep in the next day. Why do they play the music And why so loud? The other school problem i.e. parking outside peoples houses, may have been somewhat sorted out, with the housing communities adjacent to the school, now having been turned into gated communities to keep the school parent’s cars out. Why can’t the school be completely self contained in the plot of land that it is on, with it’s own link road to and from the fountain roundabout. Then, it would not effect the housing at all in that area? Town Hall Answer: Related to this matter, music from GA school shouldn’t disturb the neighbours’ peace at their homes. If you consider that the volume of that music is so loud that you can’t rest at your home, you should write a complaint about this issue and register it at Town Hall, or in any Municipal Office. Q: Any news Town hall would like to share with us? Town Hall Answer: First of all, there have been several works done during these months in order to improve the water transport infrastructure in Gran Alacant. Furthermore, as usual, both a Police Station and a Tourist Info Station (to relocate yet) are going to be available for

4 4

all the citizens in Gran Alacant, so as you can have all the services at your disposal. The works of rehabilitation of the bridge have been finished and the entrance to Gran Alacant is more secure now. Q: Building on top of solarium/roof terrace. Who knows the rules? Hello GA Advertiser I read your magazine every month. I think that it´s a very good magazine. Is this something you can bring an article about in our monthly magazine? Building on top of solarium/roof terrace all over GA Altomar 2 Monte Mar and many other urbanizations. Unfortunately more and more people are building strange building on top of their roof terrace/solarium. That totally covers there solarium and totally ruin/destroy the wonderful views for all the other residents! Buildings in aluminum and glass more than 2 meters high are more and more common. When we bought our house we were told that the only thing that was allowed on the roof terrace/solarium was an awning. It was not legal to obstruct the view for other residents! Does anybody know what the rules are? We got to find a way to stop these Klondike building. They don’t look good! I hope that you will bring an article about this subject, so we can have a public discussion about what is allowed and what isn’t allowed! Maybe you can give the residents, who already got their view destroyed by some extensions or a whole building some good advice. How to get these removed again (if possible), Kind Regards, Flemming K Town Hall Answer: Related to this matter, if the new construction is allowed, there is no way to either stop or return to the former building. But, if you want to know about these works, I encourage you to ask at the Town Hall (Urbanism Department) about the permission which the owner had to ask for in order to know if the construction is legal.

OTHER NEWS: Hello. I was one of the unfortunate people to put a large deposit on the purchase of one of the off plan houses in Gran Alacant in 2007 (Monte Y Mar). The building company have not finished the house and will not return my deposit. I would like to know if anybody else has contacted your site looking for other people in the same situation who could pool their resources together and fight the builder for return of deposits. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Chris C. xxxxxxxxxx We should see an additional 50,000 Russians coming into Alicante airport this summer from two flights per week from St.Petersburg. Airport arrival figures at Alicante, seem to go up month after month, year after year. xxxxxxxxxxx Today in the Gabe Chinese shop my husband had his wallet "picked" luckily it was on a chain, the man that was actually taking the wallet couldn't get the wallet back into his pocket! so the guy just left it, my husband felt something on his leg and immediately realised what was happening, (he worked in a jail before retirement) he shouted "call the police I have been robbed" They threw the wad of money down (300 euros!! we had just gone to the bank!) The owners of the shop were very helpful they brought it all up on the shop camera, and there it was in very clear detail how they did it, such clear images, so hopefully the police will catch them. We went to Santa Pola and filed a complaint, they said they would go and view the footage straight away. So, beware of these bar-stewards, 3 men, one about 35 6ft and portly, another about 35 5' 8 also portly, and the third one aged about 25, tall and of athletic build. They were Eastern block nationals. They were driving an old Opal Astra saloon silver in colour. We only reported it in the hope that they will be caught, and that the same thing doesn't happen to someone else with a less fortunate ending! Name supplied xxxxxxxxxx The revamping of the Arenales Hotel came to a stop in early June. There seems to be arguments as to whether the builders are following the agreed guidelines about

the amount of renovating and the amount of demolition of the old site. By the time you read this, there may have l have been a remedy. Hope so, as it is such a pity to stop what should be a great new building for the area. xxxxxxxxxx After all of the pipe laying on GA that took place during the winter, it is great to see that the company responsible are now resurfacing all of the parts of the roads that they had to dig up. Well done to

them. Unlike the natural gas company who have left much of our urbanisation littered with trenches. TAXI RANK AT CARABASSI A petition has been started to request a taxi rank at the Carabassi Commercial Centre in Gran Alacant. This is a much needed service in Gran Alacant. Therefore we would request that as many of you sign the petition as possible. Petition at Hispania for signing! TOURIST OFFICES IN ARENALES DEL SOL The tourist offices of Arenales del Sol have been renovated. This season has included a parking for people with disabilities. You can also get our magazine in this office. THE SUMMER SEASON HAS STARTED! The blue flags are waving on the beaches of Carabassi and Arenales del Sol. The novelty is that Arenales will have an electric lift for disabled people to help their access to the beach. But they still have not open the beach bars. Arenales is scheduled to expect 2 kiosk, 5 zones of parasols and sunbeds, 8 toilets (2 adapted for disabled) and 30 feet showers. Carabassi will have 1 kiosk,1 area of sunbeds and parasols, one inflatable platform for water games, 1 toilet adapted and 6 feet showers. This is expected to be open the next coming weeks. Possibly all the above is achieved by the time you read this.

GASP T H EAT RE GROU P

GASP THEATRE GROUP has been putting on plays and comedy evenings for quite a few years now, and the original team are beginning to get a bit old! We really need some new blood, especially some younger people, as its quite difficult acting early 20s when you are in your late 60s! Anyone who is interested - you don't have to be a permanent resident in the area. Some of us are "part-timers", staying in GA for 2-3 months at a time, and we usually manage to fit productions around suitable dates. You don't have to have had any previous acting or theatre experience, and if you don't fancy acting, we always need backstage help. You won't be asked to sing or dance, as we prefer to do comedy plays and sketches. We are presently having a well-earned summer break, but meetings will start up again in September.

EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE

Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

SPONSOR A RESCUED HORSE Our equines come to us starving, abused, scared and with broken spirits. We feel privileged to be able to give our rescued horses, ponies and donkeys a second chance at life with the dignity and respect they deserve. But we can't do it alone. You can help us dramatically improve the life of a rescued animal by sponsoring a horse from as little as €10 a month (or your chosen currency). Your sponsorship choices are: • Full sponsorship (€200/month) – cover the costs of everything your horse needs including feed, veterinary care, medications, vaccinations, identi-chipping, farrier and dentistry care. • Half sponsorship (€100/month) – pitch in with others towards the cost of everything your horse needs. • Hay sponsorship (€50/month) – cover the costs of hay and feed for your horse. • Vet sponsorship (€20/month) – cover the costs of basic veterinary maintenance for your horse including vaccinations, medications, and farrier and dentistry care. • Farrier sponsorship (€15/month) – cover the costs of general farrier maintenance for your horse. • Maintenance sponsorship (€10/month) – cover the costs of general horse maintenance such as grooming, worming and mucking out stalls or fields.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB

Sponsored by AVALON

SADNESS TO SUCCESS

35 Monte Mar members participated in the club´s trip to Potters Bowling Centre, home of the World Indoor Bowling Championships in Norfolk.

When we arrived on the Monday morning we learnt that one of our members, Dave Buckland, who had travelled to Norfolk with his partner Jenny a few days earlier had died that morning in Norwich hospital. Despite this shock, club members performed well in the three day competition, with two teams in the semi

finals and ultimately the overall winners Sue Kemp, Geraldine Fisher, Brian Zelin and Gordon Fisher were presented with their trophy by former World Champion, Greg Harlow. Also in May, we hosted La Posada Bowls Club from Andalucia. An excellent mornings bowling was followed by an equally excellent lunch that was enjoyed by all.

On 28th and 29th May we hosted Indalo Bowling Club from Almeria for the annual interclub match for the President´s Cup, which

Monte Mar won. Again there was a most enjoyable social side to the weekend. In both the VCL and Spitfire Leagues, after a shakey start, both our teams have started to improve. For further information about Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club, check out our website www. montemarbowls.com or email us at info@ montemarbowls.com. We are also on Facebook.

June Mendittas Birthday Ascot day on the 1st of June was afternoon of posh frocks, fancy hats, bingo, auctions and wonderful cream teas. All of these events made a grand total of 707€ towards the M.A.B.S. Hospice fund. Cameras snapping from all directions and ladies in their posh frocks, and even some of the gentlemen wore hats and somewhat posh outfits bringing fun and laughter to the square. It certainly was a splendid afternoon. The talented Pam who works at ZEST brought special hand made boxes, which sold out with the money going to M.A.B.S. Hospice fund.

NEVER GIVE UP! control my stutter, both physical and physiological. The physical techniques include a new way to breathe when speaking and an assertive tone when speaking-no holding back on sounds. The physiological techniques were about defeating the negative associations I had built up around speaking. This included speaking dysfluently in a controlled way. Being dysfluent on my own terms gave me the confidence that it is fine to speak differently from other people and it allowed me to stop hiding and to accept myself as a person who stutters.

I

’m a person who loves Gran Alacant having holidayed here for the past 10 years. My parents own a lovely house a short walk from the beach and bars. It really is a home from home. I’m also a person with a stutter. Stuttering is a hidden disability and one that affects 1% of the world’s population. For many people who stutter, the world can be an intimidating place to live and one where a stutterer can feel isolated. As a stutterer myself, I used to feel feelings of anxiety and embarrassment every time I spoke. I felt alone and that no one could understand my situation. I left school and chose a course at college that involved little to no speaking even though all I wanted to do was be a teacher. Then 9 years ago, I found a stuttering therapy course called The McGuire Programme. This is a unique therapy option as it is run for people who stutter by people who stutter. After my first course everything changed for me. I no longer felt alone. I had a support community of other people who knew what I was feeling. The McGuire Programme taught me techniques to

28

Around five years ago I decided to retrain as a teacher and now work in a busy primary school in Glasgow. I am very open and honest about my disability with colleagues, parents and children. I teach children that it is perfectly acceptable to be different and it gives hope to people who themselves struggle with barriers to achieving their full potential. I have also been selected as the Equality and Diversity representative for Glasgow teachers, a voluntary role. This role means I can speak to others in the profession about any issues they may heave around equality and diversity. Since joining The McGuire Programme and accepting my disability I have achieved things I never thought I could achieve. I have presented at academic conferencesrelaying data from my master’s level qualification, I have given a best man speech and I’ve given a speech at my own wedding. It’s also the little things like ordering a take away or getting my train ticket. The McGuire Programme changed my life. Earlier this year I was nominated for a National Diversity Award for being an inspirational role model. It is amazing and humbling that people would take the time to nominate and vote for me. YOUNG HORSE LOVER RAISES HUNDREDS OF EUROS FOR ROJALES EQUINE RESCUE CENTRE

A

young Marbella student who threw her energy into fundraising for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has won a charity competition hosted by her school. Victoria Sagidullina is a student of Laude San Pedro International College in Marbella, where students are this term studying persuasion means as a part of public speaking classes. Each child was asked to pick a charity and present it with a group of four classmates. The rest of the class then voted for the project they believed deserved the most support. Victoria absolutely loves horses and chose to support the Rojales rescue centre despite living 500km away in Marbella. Says Victoria's mum, Maria: "I feel like she has changed since she came across the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. She feels so deeply about your charity!" Victoria passed the classroom challenge with flying colours and was then named one of six winners, which means she scores a €250 for the rescue centre – enough to feed two rescued horses for an entire month.

32

Victoria Sagidullina The students actually fundraised this money – and more, which was distributed between the students' chosen charities by approaching local businesses and explaining their projects to them. Says Maria: "Victoria presented the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at a seminar for local business people, with about 50 people present there, and got some great prizes like 'dinner for two' at one of the best restaurants here, vouchers for local shops, a gorgeous necklace from a local designer, and a three-month advertising radio campaign worth €1200." Victoria even went on RTV Marbella radio last month to talk about her project. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said: “We're so pleased to see young people getting involved in animal welfare here in Spain and trying to make a difference. It really does make all the hard work we do feel worthwhile. “Thank you so much for your support, Victoria, and for helping to spread our message far and wide. You really are a very special girl, and we hope to meet you one day soon and introduce you to all our horses.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. Free horse tours run throughout the afternoon and refreshments are available in the café. For more details and directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

CROWNS FOR TEETH

crowns are very strong but can look unsightly.

A crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a 'cap'.

The dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing a layer of the outer surface, leaving a strong inner core. Once the tooth is shaped, an impression (mould) of the prepared tooth is taken together with one of the opposite jaw to show the way you bite together. The impressions will then be given to a dental technician, along with details about the shade to use and any other information they need.

M

odern filling materials are very strong and allow us to restore quite badly broken down teeth. Even when tooth loss is too severe to repair with a conventional filling, a dentist can use a crown to save the tooth.

Crowns are used for several reasons; for example to restore a very badly broken down tooth, to improve the appearance of discoloured or misshapen teeth or to protect a tooth that has been root filled and weakened. Crowns are most commonly made of bonded porcelain; a precious metal base is made and porcelain is applied in layers over it. This material is both hard wearing and aesthetically pleasing. In other cases all porcelain crowns can be used when strength is not an issue. All gold alloy

A temporary crown will be placed while the permanent crown is being made; this normally takes 1 or 2 weeks. At the second visit the temporary crown is removed, the permanent crown checked for fit and occlusion and cemented permanently into place. Crowns are very long lasting and can provide a strong and visually pleasing solution to many dental problems. Dr. Paul Saliba

A Single Summer’s Day by Kiefer Holland

It is a clear, bright summer’s day.

It is so silent and serene that the only noise I can hear is the gentle crashing of the waves against the shore, a sound which is occasionally permeated by the cry of the seagulls which float in the air above us. We’re at the beach, our beach, at our spot; this is the central place in our relationship; the geographic point which all the memories we make seem to orbit, before coming to rest back here. I am just returning from my trip to grab something from the car. I didn’t get whatever it was that I was after; I forgot what it was almost as soon as my hand touched the warm metal of the door. The sun-heated steel seemingly seared the intention from the surface of my skin somehow. So now, as I walk, feeling the sand shifting between my toes, I have a bemused smile upon my face, and the camera – which I decided to pick up instead – in my hand. Whilst I wander, I look up to the clear sky, as if admiring the infinite firmament will somehow serve up the defecting memory, so I may once again imprison it within my mind. Though I probably would not go back to the car even if it did. I lower my eyes from the sky down to the sea, the horizon at which they meet and divide appears merely as the dividing point between two versions of the same eternal blueness; not a place, or a time, but the intersection of an hourglass in which the sand has become clogged. Lowering my eyes further I reach the shore, where balletic kamikaze waves break themselves in beautiful obliteration. The white spray is sharply contrasted against the darkened sand, which marks the waves’ bloody retreat back out to sea in this never ending battle.

4040

Then my eyes fall on you…

You are within touching distance of the shoreline chaos, and its violence is muffled by the serenity of your pose, you are kneeling with your legs to one side and leaning on your right hand, your limbs making a gentle impression upon the beach. The sand, as though for comfort, clings to your feet and ankles; little specs of it have become entwined in your blue string anklet. That red summer dress that always seems brighter on you – sunlight against your olive skin – is lost around your shoulders, amongst your long, thick, dark brown hair, which crashes down in waves and loose curls like a sea of its own. The sunglasses, which rest upon your head, attempt to stop these rebellious locks from falling into your face, but a single strand still falls just in front of your left eye. As this strand, along with the rest, is shifted gently by the wind, the scent of citrus drifts to me, sharp and sweet amongst the salted sea air. Your left hand is stretched to the ground in front of you; your long, elegant index finger tracing something in the sand. Four letters and two elegant arches. Halfway through a heart. Your hazel eyes, focussed upon your task, are so open that I can see the glimmer of your pupils. You are smiling; it is a happy, content, open-lipped and full-toothed smile; it is full of life and private joy; it is not a smile for show, not a smile for others, not a smile for the camera that I carry in my hand. And yet I am so glad that I picked it up at the car; I am so glad that I forgot what I was really meant to collect, because this picture is now all I have left. Just this image of a single summer’s day, and none of the pieces which made it so perfect. for more from Kiefer go to kieferholland.wordpress.com

ears ago, we organised a few weekends for mentally and physically disabled people to fly with us under a tandem paraglider. We were no pioneers, but it was the first time event, a whole weekend was organised for that reason in Spain, and in Europe. Nowadays, special carriages and special modifications on the wings are made, so physically disabled people can fly themselves. One particular weekend, when the weather was with us at the coast, we flew a 100 times over the cliffs of Santa Pola. Of course, with all my other paragliding tandem friends from all over the region to help. An amazing, unforgettable and emotional weekend, which totally exhausted us out. Not only physically, but also mentally. The reason why we dont organize this event any more is the difficulty in finding help, but also because specialized clubs from all over in Europe offer tandems flights for all now. The organization was done weeks before, visiting schools, centers, talking to monitors, info sessions for the ones who

52

were going to fly with us etc. The Day itself was accompanied with a huge paella of course and ice cold beverages on the beach for all. These events you never forget, and I am sure the passengers had the weekend of their life as well. I remember one journalist asked me the silliest question: Nick why do you organise these things? I just said: to end up in heaven. He didn’t understand what was just achieved‌

MEDICAL TOURISM IN SPAIN

s Don Ernesto rightly said, “If you visit only one country in your lifetime, make it Spain.” From beautiful coastal towns to sandy beaches, with an ample amount of sunshine pouring in, Spain has always been the most crowdpleasing destination worldwide. Taking pride in the existing tourism infrastructure, the Spanish government is leaving no stone unturned in building Spain as one of the most popular medical tourism hub as well. How does it feel to avoid long stretched waiting lines outside medical centers? The opportunity of being catered right on time? A dream? Spain is no less than a dream! A medical tourist can avail the most competitive prices offered for medicative treatments and surgeries with exceptional quality standards and techniques, a vast network of hospitals and clinics, and notably, the relevance of being attended in esteemed accredited centers by highly qualified doctors and much more. These are just a few factors taken into consideration in evaluating why medical tourism in Spain is globally renowned. Looking at the facts based on an extensive research conducted on the topic, besides being a tourist hub for pleasure and entertainment, Spain is also one of the most premium medical tourism destinations in Europe. The nation spends around more than 10% of its GDP on the healthcare sector, and is conventionally rated among the world’s best. The country has a number of healthcare clinics and hospitals that offer high quality treatments for significantly lower costs. As per statistics analyzed at the time this article is recorded, 40% of the patients seeking medical assistance are foreigners, belonging to 114 different nationalities globally. Oftentimes, Spanish healthcare providers are visited by citizens of other European countries, who wish to seek

60

instantaneous medical aid, at affordable prices. Frequent medicinal procedures that people go to Spain for include orthopedic, cardiac, bariatric, dental procedures, and cosmetic surgeries. Most sought after surgeries include the following: • Cosmetic procedure for liposuction • Belly tuck • Hip replacement • CABG or Bypass surgery • Dental implants • Reconstructive or plastic surgery procedures • Knee replacement surgery Research analysis at the time of writing this article exposes that cosmetic surgery, such as a nose job costs around £3000 plus in Manchester, while the average cost of the procedure accounts up to £2,400 in Spain. Other most demanded beauty enhancement treatment - specific to men more often, includes hair transplant procedure costed at £3600 or more, while it is offered at £3200 or less in Spain. For this reason, an increasing number of medical tourists across Europe are choosing Spain to take benefit of an inexpensive treatment, in particular to the cosmetic surgical procedures, while enjoying highest healthcare standards provided. And that’s not all – medical tourists belonging to European nationals, holding an E-11 form or the new EU card, are entitled to free and comprehensive services from the healthcare sector, for a period of three years. According to a survey conducted by Turespana, in 2012, nearly 22,000 medical tourists visited Spain and spent over 12 million Euros, and that number is increasing every year. In short, medical tourism in Spain is bringing in valuable foreign exchange and is doing its part in improving the country’s economy.

FACIAL LIFTING: It is an important aspect of cosmetic surgery procedures. Facial lifting is indicated in people who have lost the elasticity of the skin of the face, with the consequent formation of wrinkles, deep furrows, hanging of the chin line, formation of bags under the eyes, collapse of the skin of the superior eyelids, etc. Facial lifting can be: COMPLETE : Indications: When a patient needs surgical restoration of the whole face, it is necessary to proceed to surgical resection of the skin of the superior and inferior eyelids, as well as surgical resection of the fat contained in the bags of the superior and inferior lids. The same procedure is applicable when treating the wrinkles of the neck, and the elevation of the tail of the eyebrows. These procedures may call for the necessity of a partial resurfacing of the peri-oral or peri-orbital areas, respectively.

82

Procedure: In order to carry out the above mentioned procedures, it is necessary to undermine the entire skin of the face, for its elevation and traction up and behind, and resection of the redundant skin. Internally it is possible to proceed to the tightening of deeper tissues in order to obtain a firmer result. The resurfacing is carried out with Co2 Laser, which eliminates the finer wrinkles that surgery cannot reach. Scars: The resulting scars are located in such places that they are practically unnoticeable. The most visible scar is located in front of the ear and, in some cases, inside it. Sutures: Sutures are removed within 7 to 10 days after the operation or, in some cases, they are self-dissolving. Anaesthesia: In general it is local anaesthesia, following sedation. In most cases the patient can return home after a short period of rest (2 to 3 hours). If necessary it can be done under general anaesthesia. Patient will need to

take additional precautions such as the use of creams, sun protectors, etc. General anaesthesia can also be use. Recovery: This varies from individual to individual but, in general, the post-operatory inflammation and haematomas last from 10 to 15 days. Complications: Like in any other surgery it can be complications due to formations of clots, infection and superficial necrosis of the skin mainly in the area of the upper cheek. Is advisable stop smoking before any cosmetic surgery mainly on face. PARTIAL LIFTING-MINI LIFTING- QUICK-LIFT Indications: When only the lower half the face is treated. This is a procedure used in cases of incipient wrinkles, usually in younger patients who want to overcome the ageing process but do not need a complete lifting. The lower part of the cheeks is lifted, thus improving the facial contour. This can also be done in conjunction with an elevation of the tail of the brows. If the patient wishes, a resurfacing with Co2 Laser can be carried out at the same time. Surgical Technique: The QuickLift–S Lift is performed as an outpatient procedure with either local anesthesia alone or a combination of local and oral sedation. The S-Lift procedure is the fixation of the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system), and the extension of the supra-platysmal plane to the zygomatic bone periosteum to achieve stable traction and fixation. S- Lift Initial Scribing: Scars: Scars are located either in front of, or inside, the ear, with a slight continuation behind it. The resurfaced area acquires a pink pigmentation that lasts for 3 to 4 months. Sutures: Sutures are removed 7 to 10 days after the operation or, in some cases, they are self-dissolving. Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia with or without previous sedation, depending on the patient´s emotional state. In either case hospitalisation is not necessary and the patient can return home after the operation. General anaesthesia may be also used. Recovery: Being a less aggressive procedure than a total lifting, recovery time is shorter and can vary from 5 to 8 days, extending to 10 if there has been resurfacing. Complications: Like in any other surgery it can be complications due to formations of clots, infection and superficial necrosis of the skin mainly in the area of the upper cheek. Is advisable stop smoking before any cosmetic surgery mainly on face.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

HEAT STROKE (AND OTHER SUMMER PROBLEMS)

During summer months (which implies, at this area, from May to October), it’s absolutely necessary to consider a good prevention against undesirable effects of hot temperatures. In this article we are going to write about two typical problems related to summer and high temperatures: heat stroke and sunburn. Heat stroke is a quite serious problem with a high mortality rate. Every animal, including birds, mammals and reptiles may suffer it. Reptiles such as tortoises, iguanas and lizards escape from sunlight at the most critical hours by getting into caves or hiding under stones, but when they are living in captivity, if the cage is exposed to direct sunlight, and not giving the animal any chance of hiding, even if they have a proper water supply, they will die of heat stroke. Birds and rabbits are even more sensitive: when external temperature reaches 40-42ºC, they die very quickly. Wild animals are usually well adapted to the environment they live, so they always know the best way to escape from high temperatures. The problem usually appears in companion pets when exposed to high temperatures, with no chance to escape from them (for example, by locking them in a car in summer), and when forced to take some exercise under extreme temperatures. Spanish sanitary authorities warn that a child locked in a car with the air con off starts being in risk of heat stroke when external temperature is over 25ºC, which is not an extreme temperature at all, in just 10 MINUTES. So, if 10 minutes in a car when temperature is over 25ºC is enough to kill a child, imagine what would happen at this area in summer, where the average temperature is 30ºC or more, in case of a dog or a cat, which are normally smaller than a child, wear all year round their own “fur coat”, and are unable to sweat… Due to the high temperatures we have in this zone, and the fact that modern cars have massive windscreens, which make them work like real greenhouses, you can go 10 minutes to the bank at 10:00 am, only to find when you are back that your pet has been literally roasted alive in your car. Heat stroke is a real emergency: the animal temperature may reach 42-43ºC and a multi organic damage (specially brain, circulatory and kidneys) may appear very quickly, so it must be taken to the vet, the

86

sooner the better. In the way to the vet, the best thing you can do is to wet the animal as much as possible, and to keep its head up, in order to avoid cerebral oedema. But even with this first aid care and the quickest of the veterinary interventions possible, the odds of a fatal outcome are real (and high). Locking the pet in a car is not the only way to produce a heat stroke: exercise (even moderate one) at midday in summer, long runs when playing or chasing rabbits, or just a simple walk if we are talking of short nose dogs, are enough. If the animal is wearing a muzzle, which makes them not to pant properly, heat stroke will start even more easily. The other typical problem connected to direct sunlight exposition in summer, which is sunburn, is much less common than heat stroke, because it happens more commonly in winter, when animals are searching for a warm place. Sunburn may be specially dramatic in white cats (same as people, melanin protects from sunburn, so it’s much easier for a white coated animal to get burnt than for a black coated one): their ears get burnt very easily, and this sunburn may develop in a very high number of cases, an aggressive skin cancer. Another factor, apart from white skin, which is almost never considered for preventing solar skin damage, is the fact that lots of long haired dogs and cats get clipped very short for the summer: in these cases, the skin gets always a bit irritated after the clipping, which makes it even more sensitive under the sunlight. A similar thing happens in dogs whose face fur covers the eyes, such as Maltese and Old English: it’s very common that the owner tells the groomer to cut face hair short because “the animal cannot see properly”. The thing is, this fur is a natural protection for the eyes against sunlight, and unprotected eyes may suffer corneal damage, which may be permanent. Of course, we understand summer temperatures here are too high for long haired dogs, so most of them must be clipped. In these cases, keeping them away from direct sunlight from 11:00 am to 18:00 pm would be a sufficient prevention. So, avoiding exercise when it’s hot, not keeping them locked in non ventilated places and providing a constant fresh water supply, are the best ways to prevent undesirable sunlight effects in summer.

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com

Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site or Call: 645 469 253 Canela is a 10 month old German Shepherd cross and was rescued with her mother from a busy road in Elche. Canela is great with other dogs, cats and children and is negative for all Mediterranean diseases

Tanya is a beautiful, petite female siamese with a bob tale and piercing blue eyes. She is about 3 years old, sterilised and needs a quiet new home with no dogs or children.

Greta, Carlotta, Bella, Mandy and Garfield have all been adopted from our last issue. Kiko the Fox Terrier is such a good dog. Even while our vet was drawing blood from him to test for life threatening diseases he was happy to receive attention and not even a murmur of discontent was heard from him. The test results were all negative and so Kiko can now be offered for adoption. He is about 15 months, good with other dogs, a very obedient and happy dog that loves to play and go out for long walks.

Sasha is a gentle and loyal 6 year old Husky that needs a new home. She is very good with people, with other dogs, and with cats. She makes no demands on anyone and is very obedient. Sasha is chipped, vaccinated and sterilised.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

SAY HELLO TO THE FAMOUS HOOPOE

F

or nearly the whole of May, without fail at sixthirty in the morning I was woken up by an insistent call coming from my roof in Monte y Mar. It was impossible to sleep through, because as soon as one started, another one would join in. I knew exactly what they were, and although I like to see these birds they seem to have no idea that they were ruining my beauty sleep. They seemed to disappear during the day, but reappeared in the evening, and start up their duet again.

Lots of people know about them, but they can be difficult to see close up as they are very shy. Say hello to the famous Hoopoe (Abubilla in Spanish), which gets its strange name from their quiet but penetrating call – hoophoop-hoop. It is one of the iconic birds of Spain, and no holiday would be complete without catching at least a glimpse of one. You usually see it as a rapidly disappearing flappy thing which looks like an oversized black-and white butterfly, but when you see it up close it is a very pink bird with black and white wings and that amazing headdress. I’m going to let you in to a little secret – the best place to see these birds up close is from either of the two main hides in the Clot near the Carabassi bars. Instead of looking out straight in front of you, you should look at the bare patches of land on each side of the hides, for this is their favourite area for digging into soft ground looking for bugs which it winkles out with that strange beak. If you are quiet, you will be able to watch it waddling along and poking at the ground, or you might be lucky as I was and get one perching on the fence alongside the hide.

90 90

Keen birders know how to find this bird’s nest, usually in a hole in a tree – they simply follow their noses. A Hoopoe nest emits the most appalling stench, partly because the parents don’t clean out the chick droppings like most other birds, but also the chicks secrete a foul odour from their tail glands, and the hot weather only adds to the fun. This of course is an antipredator measure, because you don’t get many predators here who are willing to wear a gas mask or (and I hope you’re not reading this over breakfast) can dodge the very accurate shooting skills of the chicks when threatened – the ammunition doesn’t come from the front end of the bird! Hoopoes do occur occasionally in the UK where, as Bill Oddie famously pointed out, you only ever find them on vicarage lawns, but Spain is one of the major strongholds. They are a bit quieter now as high summer approaches so I’m getting my sleep now, thank you for asking. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

July Jokes for our friends Jennifer & David A matter of life and death Dai was watching a Six Nations game in Cardiff. In the packed stadium there was only one empty seat, right next to him. “Whose is that seat?” asked a man in the row behind. “I got the ticket for my wife,” said Dai. “But she died in an accident.” “So you’re keeping the seat vacant as a mark of respect?” “No,” said the fan, “I offered it to all of my friends.” “So why didn’t they take it?” “They’ve all gone to the funeral.”

Or a Welsh woman Three friends married women from different parts of the world. The first married a Greek girl and told her that she was to do the dishes and cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day he came home to see a clean house. The second man married a Thai girl and gave her the same orders, to do all the cleaning and cooking. The first day he didn’t see any results but by the third his house was clean and dinner was on the table. The third man married a Welsh girl. He ordered her to keep the house clean, dishes washed, lawn mowed and dinner ready for 6pm. For the first two days he didn’t see anything, but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye.
