We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area.

Hello friends,

Due to a few readers request we are introducing one change, we will supply information for June plus the first week in July. Many thanks readers for your suggestions. June is the month for one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “ Bonfires of St. John”. The fiesta takes place in the streets from the 20th to 24th. The bullfighting takes place from the 22nd to the 26th, and one more extra day on the 7th of August. The cartoon monuments will be set up in the streets on the 20th and they will be burnt on the night of the 24th of June. After the burning of the monuments, for the following five days there will be a fantastic international fireworks contest. Also all these municipalities celebrate their main fiestas, Moors and Christians in: Elda 2nd to 6th Benjuzar, Teulada-Moraira, Pego, Agost 25th to 30th and Benissa. On the night of the 23rd, hundreds of fires will be lit on the beach to celebrate ancestral rituals and traditions; there will also be a fiesta on Santa Pola’s Levante beach as usual. Santa Pola becomes a very sporty place at the end of May until the first week in July: - On the 4th takes place the IV 10K International Villa de Santa Pola, a 10 kilometres race, more than 5000 people will participate in this race. The International Volleyball competition also takes place in Gran Playa area. - 17th, 18th and 19th - V handball Tournament will be held on the football field “Els Xiprerets”. - 25th of June - IV Triathlon Cross Santa Pola which starts at 10:00 with more than 1200 participants. July: In Benissa from 1st to 4th July fiestas and Moors and Christians parade. On the 3rd of July - the International open waters swim Tabarca-Santa Pola takes place with 1400 swimmers participating this year!

Bye-bye my friends ... until next month.

Hello everyone, I wasn’t left much space this month because there is so much going on everywhere at the moment. Me and Lou went to our first GASP production a “Breath of Spring” in May which we thoroughly enjoyed. Those guys are so talented! If you ever have a spare evening to see one of their shows you won’t be disappointed. JYSK has now opened its doors and Fosters Hollywood won’t be too far behind. Spanish can build fast it seems! Well done Man United on winning the FA Cup and unlucky for Liverpool in their final. Sorry about Norwich Barry ! Have a great month, Ged & Lou

Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 28

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: SURPRISE TAX HIKE Hi Lou & Ged, On 15th April the Costa Blanca News published a local item ' SURPRISE TAX HIKE'. I quote: The rateable value of property (catastral) was put by 10% in Santa Pola in January, without the Town Hall informing anybody. Can the Town hall comment on this and advise how it will affect residents? Chris & Penny Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this, it is true that the value of property has been increased by 10%, but this was because Central Government had decided to decrease this item by 10%. Thus, this was the only way in order to preserve economic stability of Town Hall. However, the local taxes which must be paid related to the property (IBI) have not been increased, so everyone is going to pay the same amount related to those taxes, but with the advantage that the real value of their property has been updated to present day (there was no updates since 1999). Q: ANOTHER VERY BAD ENDING OF THE GRAN ALACANT MARKET DAY! Hello Lou & Ged!!

6

Hope that you find this information so relevant that you want to inform the Town Hall and of course even your readers. Even this Thursday, about 14.00 when we passed the market place in our car, there was a tremendous lot of plastic bags and other items inside and outside the fence of the market place, “distributed” with the help of a strong wind. This situation is unfortunately identical every Thursday afternoon and we are very surprised that most people don’t pay any attention at all although the area around Avenida Escandinavia looks terrible!! We have of course observed that the cleaning staff start to do their work a.s.a.p. After the market place is emptied, but before they can do that, most of these bags and items are far away from there, and as a result most of them are going into the Mediterranean sea. On TV they have shown programs what happens to animals living on land and in the sea, when they try to swallow a plastic bag (a bag with handles was covered on a dolphins

head and it was suffocated to death in one of the programs!!). Of course it will also destroy the beaches where people spend their free time and want to swim. Talking about money, much of the Town Halls budget, is used to clean all affected areas,it could be spent on better things than this. It must be possible that the market sellers are more restricted in giving out plastic bags to the buyers and also try to pick up garbage around their stalls during the day and before they leave, at the moment there are just a few small litter bins, and that problem must be possible for the Town Hall to solve easily. If you are living in Gran Alacant, then of course you want your home area to be something that you can feel proud of. But on days like we have just described we feel ashamed to show visitors where we live!!We are very interested to receive comments from the Town Hall.

Best regards, Nils Town Hall Answer: This issue, as you say, represents a problematic behaviour from both buyers and sellers. Your complaint and your advice has been transferred to Market and Cleaning Councillors. Q: TELEPHONE SIGNAL: Any update on the telephone signal? We hear almost every day people complaining about "the bad cobetura". Best regards, Nils Town Hall Answer: Unfortunately, for the time being we have no further information than provided in previous issue. Q: HABITATION CERTIFICATE I am experiencing a problem with obtaining my Habitation Certificate from the Town Hall at Santa Pola. We purchased our Torreon style house from Masa in 2005.It wasn't until 18 months ago during a conversation with our neighbours who told us we are required to have a Habitation Certificate if we were ever to sell the house. I asked the company who look after our affairs here to arrange for someone to come out from the town hall and check everything was OK which they duly did. After some considerable time I had not heard from anyone so I contacted our agents who said they would chase it up. They then called me to say that it had been refused on the grounds I had put a door upstairs leading from our bedroom to the Solarium. This was news to me as I had not put a door in, because the house was constructed with two outer doors upstairs, one a sliding patio door leading from our bedroom and a normal door leading from the stairs, this is the same as all the other Torreon style houses which have been built by Masa on the Gran Alacant site, and which, from what I can gather most owners have received their habitation certificates, with no mention of any of them having two doors. You can see the doors from

the street, and all the houses are the same as mine. I am now looking for help as I do not know what to do next. My agents have said they have spent so much time on this and the Town Hall won't budge. A suggestion is I apply for retrospective planning for the door as if I have built it myself, but I haven't as I said it was put in by Masa like all the other Torreon houses when they were first built. Any help, guidance would be appreciated. Do I give in and apply for the license myself surely there must be a simple answer? Or is this it. Many thanks. Chris and Jan Town Hall Answer: From what I can understand, it seems that you have been requested to legalize the urban infraction related to the mentioned door. However, after talking to the urbanism department, it seems that the best way to solve your problem is by coming to the Town Hall and talk to the urbanism employees, so they can explain the situation properly because without any documents I don’t have enough information to provide you with a solution for your problem. Q: DOG BINS Hi. We own a home in Gran Alacant. The people are friendly and the weather lovely. But, we really must take issue about the amount of dog mess left by the lazy owners of our four legged friends. We noticed that we don’t have specific dog poo bins like we do in the UK. At MASA Square today there were two big dollops and also 3 dollops on Avda Polonia This really is not acceptable. Can we request that poo bins are provided please. I hate to think of The Clot being used as a dog toilet as I witnessed today. I did shout Cacca “no” but was ignored. Kind Regards, Joanne

Town Hall Answer: Related to this problem, which is a civil issue, the Infrastructure Councillor is working on the installation of effective dog poo bins and dog pee columns, so our streets can always be clean and with no more bad scents. But, for the moment, a local law can punish the dog owners if they don’t pick up dog poos, but it is the local police who are in charge of punishing these actions, and they cannot be everywhere unfortunately. However, the Town Hall encourages all the people like you who are concerned about this issue to present an official complaint, containing your address so as the areas can be studied in order to achieve a proper and effective installation of dog poo bins. OTHER NEWS: HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH Why oh why do householders dump rubbish beside the bins. There is a notice on the bins not to do this. If you have garden cuttings, cut them up into smaller pieces, put in a bag, and put the bags IN the bin. Rubbish dumped in this way makes our urbanisation look very untidy and of course encourages all kind of vermin. Please think!!! Thank you.

*Baby wipes
*Baby milk (powder)
*Comfortable clothes (babies, children, adults)

*Sanitary towels These are all important things that we take for granted and would be much appreciated. Other things that are needed: *School books *Colouring pencils *Food (rice, cereals, biscuits, tin food) *Prams, Wheelchairs *Torches Every little thing can make a difference. ROADWORKS: The pipe laying that has been taking place over the winter had left the roundabout outside the post office in a terrible state. It is nice to see that it has now been freshly re laid. HEALTH CENTRE PARKING: One of the biggest problems on GA for a number of years, has been the lack of parking, outside the health centre. Some patients turning up unwell have to park a long way away and walk to the surgery. So many cars park there, that are not for the doctors. It does not help, that whenever it is time for a festival, most of what is a car park loses even more spaces.

DOG BEACH:

It is hoped that there will be around twenty to twenty five stalls present at the market, with applications for traders now open.

GRAN ALACANT HOSPICE FUND

Blue October

Oh, my dear Jessica. What did you do? For the M.A.B.S. cancer support I dyed my hair blue. It would not wash out, I began to boo, tried every shampoo, had not a clue! For the hospice fund my tins went out, Put all your coins in! You heard me shout! I gathered them in one by one. All went to M.A.B.S. It’s not a con! My hair is still blue right at the ends, it may come out it all depends!

1165€

was the amount raised. My hair, my mind and soul are still in a daze.

Hole in the Wall

Gary Downes, the GA Electrician had a great idea to buy a gold lattice Easter egg brought all the way from Ireland and raffle it for the Gran Alacant Hospice Fund, along with other activities like a mini auction where a bottle of vodka was re-auctioned over and over again! The huge amount raised was 1080€ The Hole in the Wall hosted the event with banter coming from all sides to poor Crazy Kev. Mr Bojangles aided by Margaret Smith, Ian, Pauline and John to keep the crowd spending money. With reels of laughter from everyone as they all tried to out do each other this certainly made it an Easter Sunday to remember!

Dick Turpins

Wednesday on the 23rd of March was certainly the place to be at Dick Turpins Bar. Fun, games, bingo and raffles gave a good old fashioned Easter Fun Day organized by Margaret Smith and her gang who got together to raise funds for the pending Gran Alacant hospice. How does she do it, whatever she is on, should be bottled. Margaret and her team are always such great supporters of M.A.B.S. Always working hard to boost funds. 770€ was raised. Well done!

Zest Bar

The wonderful new ZEST BAR in Sierra Mar square have made M.A.B.S. their charity to help raise funds for the Gran Alacant Hospice that we are aiming for. Bingo, raffles and an assortment of other fundraising games helped to raise a grand sum of 270€ over Easter. Many thanks go out to all who attended and the owners Brett, Lee, Tim and Michael for organizing such a successful day!

Bobby

On Most Sundays a special lady called Bobby could have been seen at the Hole in the Wall knitting soft toys for M.A.B.S.sadly Bobby has now passed away leaving M.A.B.S. the wonderful sum of 850€ the proceeds from her soft toys sales. Her lovely husband Martin presented us with the cheque at the Hole in the Wall. Thank you Bobby and Martin for supporting MABS.

Thank you each and every one of you for pushing M.A.B.S. Hospice Fund along. Plans for this year are still on my mind. Cancer Hits everyone. Lets show that we care. Please fill all of M.A.B.S. tins that you see everywhere. Thank you Jean Reiterbund

GASP Theatre recent show

“Breath of Spring“ played to an appreciative audience for both the shows.

T

he plot was based around Dame Beatrice's “Guest “ who were kept in line by Lily the maid. Lily was very protective toward Dame Bee because it was she that gave Lily a chance of a new start in life after she had come out of prison. Unfortunately Lily in an attempt to give Dame Bee a present stole a fur coat called Breath of Spring. The first part of the play involved trying to return the coat to it's owner. The Brigadier came up with a plan to return the fur using his “ troops “. This was so successful that they decided that instead of replacing furs they should steal them and sell them to raise funds charity. Lily was unaware of this but had suspicions. After an unexpected visit from the police, all ended happily. The show nearly had to be cancelled when a cast member left, but, Penny Rooke stepped in at very short notice to take over the role of Dame Beatrice. So a special thank you to Penny for saving the day The much admired set was designed and constructed by Terry Lacey.

TOOTH COLOURED FILLINGS

I

t is quite common to see a mouth full of black fillings if someone opens their mouth wide when laughing or talking. Nowadays this no longer needs to be the case as we have tooth coloured (white) filling materials that are strong and durable ewnough to withstand the forces exerted on them even in posteriors teeth. Silver amalgam was (and still is) a very good tooth restoration material but the high amount of mercury in amalgam has always been a concern and it does not in any way look like natural enamel; although it is still widely used throughout the dental profession. In the past white fillings were thought of as not being strong enough to be used successfully on the molar teeth. Over the last couple of decades materials have improved dramatically and it is now quite easy to provide long lasting and good looking restorations. White fillings are usually placed using a bonding technique which chemically and

physically locks with existing tooth tissue thus providing a very secure seal between tooth and restoration. The method involves several stages and is more technique sensitive than using amalgam; however, when carried out properly, it will provide a visually pleasing and very durable restoration. Most white fillings are “light-cured” meaning that once in place the dentist will apply a special curing light causing the restoration to harden within a few seconds. This removes another disadvantage of amalgam, having to be particularly careful for a few hours after treatment to avoid damaging the new restoration. Whether you need to have an old “black” filling replaced or require a new restoration it is usually possible to use tooth coloured material. One exception is when too much natural tooth is missing, but in these cases it may be possible to use a crown instead and I will discuss these in a future article. Dr. Paul Saliba

e arrived in Santa Pola for the first time in1993. We had a young family. Hardly a house was built on the hill that is now called Gran Alacant. No Spanish to be seen. Just a little local paragliding school was ‘active’, but we hardly saw them. We came here with French and Belgian friends, exploring the hills inland, to see where we could spread our wings and fly.

As the longest established paragliding business in the Alicante region, we are still going and are not planning to leave this precious region for paragliding. Our next story will be about our weekend organised for mentally and physically disabled persons, flying tandems. Un saludo, Nick, Doyouwanna

For our sport we needed a good climate, small hills, cliffs and big mountains. Everything was here but not yet explored. So we worked hard to get our business started, every other month we would came down from Belgium, with friends other paraglide pilots to explore, and to get to know the region better. Until in 1998 we arrived to stay. Since 1998 we have guided foreign pilots to fly in our region, to fly on the big hills inland. And on the most famous site near the Mediterranean Sea, Cabo de Santa Pola. We offer tandem flights for all who want them from young to old.

CASE AGAINST ACCUSED NEGLIGENT HORSE OWNER TO PROCEED, TWO YEARS ON FROM ANIMAL SEIZURES

E

asy Horse Care Rescue Centre co-founder Sue Weeding will give evidence in court this month during the prosecution of a man implicated in a major 2014 animal neglect case.

The March 2014 rescue involved a court order for 14 horses and 9 donkeys – all extremely malnourished and some near death – to be seized from a property at Callosa de Segura, half an hour northeast of Murcia. The owner, an equine dealer, allegedly went bankrupt and failed to provide his ani-mals with adequate food, water and care. The rescue is believed to be one of the largest in Spain’s history, and was a joint operation between the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales, Malaga-based donkey refuge, El Refugio del Burrito, and the National Association for the Defense of Animals. The animal rights groups allege the equines were found chained to a wall in a falling down building and were filthy, terrified and literally starving. Fourteen horses were legally placed in the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s care, while El Refugio del Burrito received 9 donkeys. Among the evidence Sue will present at Orihuela court on June 2 are the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s costs to date for the rescue and ongoing maintenance of the 14 horses. She said the bill has almost topped €66,000, including feed, veterinary care, horse hospital bills and the farrier, and hopes the large figure highlights the centre’s need for government support. “These are horses that are seized by the

62

police and legally put into our care, but we do not receive any money from the government or police to look after them,” Sue said: “We have managed to cover these expenses using generous donations from our supporters, funds raised through our charity stores, and money from our very own hip pocket. “The former owner doesn’t have any money so he’s not going to contribute to their keep. We’re expecting that he’ll be told that he can’t have those horses back be-cause he can’t afford to pay us back. “Obviously we love the horses and we want to take care of them. But we hope seeing the costs will make people actually understand the enormity of what we undertake here.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre continues to care for 12 of the Callosa de Se-gura horses. Sadly, one skeletal mare died of intestinal complications shortly after her rescue – but not before miraculously giving birth to a foal, Lily, who continues to live happily with her adopted mother at the rescue centre. A second horse died of old age in December last year. “We are so pleased to see these horses now enjoying life at our rescue centre. They spend their days in the fresh air and sunshine, and will never again be chained to walls,” Sue said. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its im-portant animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. 5 Steps to Prepare Your Body for summer “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

Yes!

The final countdown to summer has officially begun. It’s time to welcome the warm weather with plenty of sunshine to bask in. It’s also the right time to prepare your summer body before summer actually hits. This certainly does not mean you panic! Sit back, relax and keep reading… Below are our selected 5 steps to prepare your body for summer! 1. Tone up Get moving! You can start by adopting routine exercises in your daily life. It is very important to get moving, since winter is often spent lazing around on couches and under the blankets, topped with a packet of chips! Start with simple workouts at home and slowly move outside to exercise in the long daylight hours of summer. If you want to lose those extra kilos that you gained

7878

during winter, you should religiously follow an exercise routine to get all toned up this summer. 2. Eat healthy and stay hydrated Let’s admit, winter is all about eating since you spend most time indoors. And of course, it is not healthy eating at all. It’s time to say goodbye to the unhealthy junk foods and add organic foods to your meal. Eat fresh vegetables and fruits to feel light. Summer can be harsh on your skin and body, drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated and moisturized! It is also a key factor in breaking down body fat, and toning up your body. 3. Get rid of embarrassing body hair Summer is the season to flaunt your toned body, so it’s time to get rid of the hair that may stop you from wearing summer clothes. Depending on your needs, you can try temporary

methods such as waxing, shaving, or threading off the hair or opt for permanent hair removal methods and procedures, such as laser. 4. Exfoliate Scrub your body to peel off any dead skin that may have appeared during winter. Not only will your dry skin be rejuvenated but it will also prevent from any ingrown hair and keep your tan for longer. 5. Get a tan Getting a gorgeous tan in summer is a desire for many. Try using products that can give you the perfect summer tan glow rather than directly tanning under the sun. Excessive exposure to sunlight can endanger your skin and health. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen and opt for tan sprays and creams for that perfect glow! Use these five tips to get the perfect summer toned body this summer!

Mayka’s Kitchen HOGUERAS DE SAN JUAN

The “Bonfires of Saint John” is a traditional festival which takes place on the evening of June 23rd. It is celebrated in many cities in Spain, but the largest one is in Alicante where the festivities start on the 19th of June with La Planta.

Alicante La Paloma

Mix 1L of of very cold water with 1 glass of anise. Stirr and Enjoy!

Coca Amb Tonyina FOR THE PASTRY: 200ml olive oil 500gr flour 200ml white wine 50ml anise dry

FOR THE FILLING: 1.5kg onions 250gr Salted tuna belly (if you can't get it, a can of tuna will do) pine nuts, oregano & sweet paprika Fry the onions in olive oil until soft. Then add chopped tuna, pine nuts, oregano and half a teaspoon of paprika. When ready - strain the oil - we will use it later in the dough. In a saucepan, mix all liquids including the oil and bring to boil. When it boils, remove it from the hob. In a bowl put 1/2 kg flour, make a hole in the center, pour in the liquid, and stir with a wooden spoon. When all mixed, put on the counter and knead. Split the dough in two halves and stretch. Place one half of the dough in the baking pan and fill with the tuna and onion and cover with the other half of dough. Brush with the egg and prick the dough with a fork. Put in the oven at 190 for 40 minutes more or less depening on the oven.

82

As ususal in Spain, drink and food are part of the festivities. We chose typical food and drink from Alicante and Galicia.

Galicia During St. John's night or witches night in Galicia, it is a tradition to prepare “Queimada”- a typical drink that is prepared according to tradition to ward off evil spirits and witches and while preparing a incantation is recited. Accompanied by grilled sardines and barbecue.

Queimada

Hard liquor, sugar, lemon or orange peel and coffee beans ................. In a clay bowl mix the hard liquor, coffee beans, lemon peel and sugar 120gr per litre. Then get a laddle and mix 4 tbsp of the liquor with 1tbsp of sugar, stir to dissolve sugar and light it on fire. Place the burning laddle carefully into the clay bowl until the mixture in the bowl catches fire. Stir frequently until the flames turn blue. Then add sugar only into the laddle and place on flames until caramel is made. Pour the caramel on the flames. Keep stirring until the alcohol is consumed. Slide the lid over the pot to put out the flames. Serve hot.

A

WHAT IS AESTHETICS

esthetics, or the philosophy of art, is the study of beauty and taste. It is about interpreting works of art and art movements or theories. The term aesthetic is also used to designate a particular style, for example the "chess aesthetic, the "Japanese aesthetic”.

An extended, philosophical reflection on aesthetic emerge with the widening of leisure activities in the eighteenth century.

The word aesthetic is also an adjective and adverb relating to cosmetology and medicine, as in aesthetic medicine. Also spelt æsthetics and esthetics, the word is derived from the Ancient Greek αἰσθητικός (aisthetikos, meaning "esthetic, sensitive, sentient, pertaining to sense perception"), which in turn was derived from αἰσθάνομαι (aisthanomai, meaning "I perceive, feel, sense").

There is one main specialty in medicine in charge of restore those parameters, Plastic Surgery the branch of surgery in charge of the repair of certain shapes and functions of the body that have been lost, or hindered, for whatever reason.

The idea of the aesthetic developed from the idea of taste and beauty. Before the early 1700s, thinkers developed general theories of proportion and harmony, detailed most specifically in architecture and music.

84

In medicine we use the term AESTHETIC referring to judge and treat parameters of beauty and harmony.

PLASTIC SURGERY: is divided in Restorative Surgery (surgery of necessity) and Cosmetic Surgery. COSMETIC SURGERY: Is the branch of plastic surgery in charge of maintaining the parameters of beauty of the body. It is, therefore, optative surgery and not “of necessity”.

Cosmetic surgery has developed as a result of the constant competitiveness in a society that values the parameters of “BEAUTY” to a supreme degree. This term, mentioned previously, does not have an exact definition. One could say that they are “those cultural characters of harmony that make something pleasantly visible”. This valuation makes many people lose their self-esteem, when not being able to attain their own ideal of beauty, and make use of cosmetic surgery in order to reach it. Thus, cosmetic surgery brings self-esteem, and helps the individual to feel more at ease in society.

In order of restore parameters more superficial where surgery is consider to aggressive appear the COSMÉTIC MEDICINE that include: • • • • • • •

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

“ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL” JAMES HERRIOT’S LEGACY

Probably all of you know perfectly James Herriot’s “All creatures great and small”, since the BBC series was a huge success some decades ago in Britain. But what you probably don’t know is the autobiographical books of this Scottish vet who worked in a rural practice in the Yorkshire dales from the 1930’s are very well known (and appreciated) by nearly all Spanish vets: my professors at the Veterinary School knew them, my first boss knew them… Most of us discovered Herriot when we were students at the Veterinary School. There was no Internet in those days (I started studying my career in 1992), but mouth-to-ear worked really well. In my case, it was a colleague and friend who told me about a British guy who wrote books about his adventures and misadventures when he was an old fashioned rural vet. I borrowed from him my first Herriot: “Vet in a spin”, which made me discover that microcosm of farmers, green hills, stone walls, horses, cows, sheep, James Herriot, the honest, hard- working vet, Siegfried Farnon, the eccentric, horse expert boss, and his brother Tristan, the crazy student. Of course, because at the beginning my English was not good enough, I started with Spanish translations. A few years later I considered I was ready for the original books in English, which implies I was enjoying them even more since there was nothing lost in translation, and made me improve my professional vocabulary and colloquial expressions. From the first moment it became one of my favourite books for many reasons: as a student, I took as a challenge to discover which was the pathology the animal was suffering in every chapter (something equivalent to find the murderer in an Agatha Christie novel); besides, the pleasure of discovering (with a certain amount of envy and nostalgia), how interesting the profession was 50 years ago. The funny thing is, a few years later, we discovered a rural practice at

88

the Yorkshire dales in the 1930’s isn’t so different to a small animal practice on the Spanish Costa in the 21st Century (and not only for the fact that, in both cases, you’d better speak English for making yourself understood), specially the relationship between the vet, the animal and the owner. Nowadays we have modern X-Ray and ultrasound devices, analyzers, and an enormous variety of drugs such as antibiotics, painkillers, insulin, chemo for tumours, brand new surgical techniques, and probably the most important: the biggest scientific library one can imagine: the Internet. No one of these things existed in Herriot’s times, but since no one of them may fully substitute a good anamnesis (the questions we ask to the owner in order to start finding some clue about what’s happening to the animal), a good exploration, a good “clinical eye”, and, the most important, a trusting relation between vet and client, we must recognize that James Herriot’s legacy is still 100% alive 80 years later. This is what we love about Herriot’s stories (nowadays, instead of reading the books, we are watching the BBC series since we found the complete DVD collection on ebay for a very reasonable price). The other thing we love is, despite it happened 80 years ago, we can see Herriot and his colleagues used to have, believe it or not, very similar problems, professional challenges, dilemmas, satisfactions, and, why not, types of clients (lovely and not-so-lovely ones) to the ones we have now. I will end with a couple of anecdotes: James Herriot was not the author’s real name but a pseudonym, because he was afraid of a penalty from RCVS since putting your name in a book was considered unacceptable publicity for a veterinary surgeon. Such a different point of view from nowadays, when it looks like good advertising seems to be even more important than having good professional skills… Thanks to “Vet in a spin” I was the only one in my class who didn’t fail a question in a Pharmacology exam since the professor used a word that hadn’t previously been explained to us.

K9 CLUB www.k9club.es

K9 Club is a non-profit, animal welfare group run totally by volunteers who are dedicated to the rescuing and re-homing of abandoned animals in the Costa Blanca area. We rely totally on public donations through fundraising and our two shops, one in Almoradi and one on La Marina, all the money we raise goes towards maintaining a high level of care for our animals. We are able to run a van which not only is used for the transportation of our animals but can also be used for the collection of any items the public wish to donate for either of our shops. We would like to hear from people who have time to spare and who love DIY, especially tiling, painting and general maintenance, as well as those of you who would love to assist the Kennel Managers with tasks such as dog grooming, dog walking and cat chatting. Working with our animals is incredibly rewarding and we have many that, for one reason or another, will never be adopted. All our animals are really friendly and would love to meet you. Our animal shelter is situated in the Catral/ Crevillent/Elche Area. We are always looking for more volunteers, so if you have a few hours a week to spare, please call 610832726 for more information, we have something to suit all tastes. WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

have been coming to Gran Alacant for nearly ten years now, and in that time there have been several changes, not least in the Clot itself. Improved conservation measures have increased the biodiversity, particularly in the last two or three years, and we are seeing species which have previously been rare or completely absent returning to the area. Of course, it is not just these improvements which leads to changes in wildlife populations, as numbers naturally fluctuate from year to year. Last year, for instance, it seemed that there were far fewer of the gaudy Beeeaters around until late summer, when birds which had bred elsewhere gathered in their hundreds to our corner of Spain. This year, the change seems to be in the numbers of Great Spotted Cuckoos – at the beginning of May there seemed to be several birds in our area, including one in the Clot, whereas in previous years they were rare or totally absent from our immediate area, preferring habitats further inland. Great Spotted Cuckoo? You may be wondering if this is the same bird as the well-known Cuckoo which makes one of the traditional sounds of springtime. No it isn't, but it is a related bird, and yes, this one does lay its eggs in other birds nests. The Great Spotted Cuckoo specialises in Magpie parasitism, but the big difference between this and the common Cuckoo is that the young bird does not kick the Magpie chicks out of the nest, and the Magpies will often raise a full brood including the interloper.

90 90

You might think this is a bit of a cheek, but there is one known benefit to the Magpies – and that it that the baby Great Spotted Cuckoo emits a noxious smell which can

put off any predators, thus protecting both chick species. Of course, in hard times not all the chicks may fledge, and the Cuckoo chick will win out over the Magpie chicks because of their greater strength. Unlike the common Cuckoo, this is a noisy exhibitionist of a bird, and if there is one around you will know all about it! It has a very harsh call with rattles and trills, and flies about showing off it's long tail and distinctive plumage. It is a very rare bird in Britain, but in Spain it can be found wherever there are Magpies or other crowsized birds – my photo was taken in the countryside around La Marina last month. The Spanish name is Crialo Europeo, which is odd as the word comes from the Spanish root of criar – which means to raise or bring up – the one thing this bird doesn't do for its offspring! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www. marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
