Hello everyone, Firstly a goodbye this month to Rose Jackson who has been providing us with her “Flower” articles. We thank her for providing interesting copy and pictures each month.

Well, the weather has certainly turned up the heat this month. the best place to be is probably on the beach or in the pool. It is great to see so many people out here again enjoying the sun. It was good to read in the newspapers that Spain´s economy had turned the corner and starting to recover, it certainly seems that way with all the building work that is going on around Gran Alacant and Arenales. Check the tourist information in the magazine for all the different events that will be happening this month. There will no doubt be several fireworks going off all around in August as usual. Have a good month Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 49 driving the Easy Horse Care bus.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! The Santa Pola Town Hall’s latest administrative procedures for the transfer of the Gran Alacant market. Press release to our magazine July-10-2014 The Councillor of Markets, Mendiola Encarnación, reports that construction of new market facilities of Gran Alacant, located on Avenue Scandinavia, have already been approved by the town hall.

At present the Department of Markets is proceeding to complete the administrative records necessary for the transfer market. To do this, she has contacted all vendors to submit the necessary documentation to the Department. After completion of the award process, it will be moving out of the current market Calle Canarias, to its new location. Also, soon the Town Hall will be tendering the canteen facilities at the new market. Regardless of the opening of the market, the Town Hall, aware of the need for parking spaces to vehicles that exist in

4

this area, has decided to open to the public as soon as possible the parking area of the market itself, to make available to all residents of Gran Alacant nearly 200 public spaces and free parking.

After receiving this press realease we asked for a meeting with Mendiola Encarnación, the Councillor of markets. Here are the questions and answers

from the meeting. Below are our questions and answers:The Town Hall jumped the gun and apologised for asking us to inform our readers of the 3rd July opening date. Paperwork for the changeover of the 130 stall holders could not take place until the ok from Valencia. This ok was given and thought all would be ready for 3rd July. To date not all stall holders have had their paperwork changed over. The opening cannot take place until all of these paperworks are completed.

There will be ONE ENTRANCE to the site which is between the market and the sports centre, and one exit at the bottom of the car park. You will not have to cause congestion by driving to the market via the link road that contains the farmacia and the Life Resort. Lighting has now been installed and in/out signs are going up. No new opening date will be given until everything is ready. SO WATCH THIS SPACE!! -----------------------Hi friends, I have had an allotment in Gran Alacant since they were introduced in 2010. I have been informed that after 4 years I have to give it back to the Town Hall. I knew that I HAD to have the " huerto " for 4 years and commited to this, I did not realise at the time that the contract was not renewable. Over the past 4 years I have spent a lot of time, effort and money getting the ground suitable for crop growing, which I did very successfully, the harvest being shared amongst our Spanish and English friends. I had to buy a watering system ( which was obligatory ), gardening tools, soil enhancement, as well as paying for the yearly rental and water ( which is billed at household rate not agricultural ). All this hard work and expense was worth it as the end result was satisfying. During the last 2 years 5 or 6 of the plots have been unattended and the large plot at the side has never been cultivated. These should have been given out to people like myself who wish to work the land. Also, there is enough land around Gran Alacant to make more

6

allotments should the demand be so great, allowing people like myself to continue to use the allotments which we currently have and enjoy. Please can you ask Loreto if there is any way, those of us who wish to, can renew our contracts. Regards Patrick Kiernan Gran Alacant

Everyone who took a plot were told in their paperwork that it was a lease for 4 years and that it was for the public and not private allotments, which would then have been permanent. The allotment idea has been such a success that many are on the waiting list, so it is not fair to extend the 4 years when so many others would like a plot. At the moment there is no money available to add more plots.

-------------------------The signs are now up on our new charity shop in Gran Alacant, which is opposite the bowls club, for the Easy

Horse care Recue Centre It was stocked for the grand opening which took place on the 28th July. A huge thank you to all of our new volunteers for their help in getting it going. If you would like to join the team or donate

anything for the new shop including furniture call Sue on 652021980 Location marked on the GA map at the back of this magazine.

We were asked by the Town Hall to make this information aware to people of Santa Pola, as it was a type of shop they are not used to, and were sure that they would make use of it. We have now arranged a magazine delivery every month into our Town Hall.

-------------------The 2nd party at the Carabasi Complex took place on Saturday 13th July, organised by Ocean, Brothers and Aquarius. Drinks and BBQ plus live music from Darren Jones provided a lovely afternoon from 4pm to 7pm. ---------------We have been informed that Mass will be 8 pm on Saturdays’ at the new Church, instead of behind the library, which is great news. -----------------PARKING FOR DOCTORS which is quite restricted with so many cars wanting to use the car park. There are two disabled spaces parking bays for use on the car park, If the car park is full it is simple to drop off the person who needs the doctor and park the vehicle out on the main road where there is plenty of room. We are fortunate to have much more space than the health centre parking in Santa Pola. ---------NEW SCHOOL site offered to Valencia has been approved and the tender for the building work will now go out. ----------More news next month

CYCLE FOR LIFE Sponsored Cycle ride from Barcelona to Gran Alacant. MABS and O'Duills 50+ Cycle Club are getting together to raise 100,000 + euro to open and support our own Hospice and Rest Bite Centre. This will be done by having a sponsored cycle from Barcelona to Gran Alacant. Each cyclist who wishes to take part will need to raise 1,000 euro in sponsorship. We hope to have 50+ number of cyclists which will raise 50,000+ euro. The cycle will take place over 8 days. Each stage will be sponsored by an Irish bar in that town, they will have to produce 10 cyclists each of which has to have sponsorship of 500 euro, that is 40,000 euro over the week. At the end of the week there will be a two day music Festival with local bands and also a top Irish band. There will also be a BBQ Festival so all of our local bars and restaurants can show their culinary skills. To finish off the Festival the 50 + cyclists arrive back all safe and well.

I need the help of all who wish to help. It's not just a sponsored week to help raise money for a hospice and well centre but is to get the families to take part as a family and have fun doing so

I need help please!!!

Chris‌please call into O'Duills at the Carabasi Centre. MORE NEWS NEXT MONTH

Be careful what you say in front of the kids! A friend hosted a dinner party for our friends and their children. During dinner my friend's best friend Diane's four year old, sitting opposite, stared at me continuously. She could barely eat her food for staring. I checked my blouse for spots felt my face for food, patted my hair in place but nothing stopped her from staring at me. I tried hard to ignore her but finally it was too much for me I finally asked her "Why are you staring at me?" and the table went quiet waiting for her response The little girl said I’m just waiting to see how you drink like a fish.

A DAY IN THE OCEAN

One thing often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola on google, rang them up and booked onto their famous Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine Reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the dive centre 10 minutes away. We had a fantastic trip and when we sat down for Tea, Coffee or Beers afterwards they told me I could actually go scuba diving!! I thought it was only the Jacques Cousteau’s and professionals that could do it. We booked to do the Discover Scuba Diving course designed to teach you step by step and although I was nervous to begin with the instructor was very professional and we The Talking Centipede A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had a pet. So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he wanted to buy an unusual pet. After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede, which came in a little white box to use for his house. He took the box back home, found a good spot for the box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to the pub for a drink with him. So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like to go down the pub with me today? We will have a good time." But there was no answer from his new pet. This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes and then asked again, "How about going down the pub with me ?" But again, there was no answer from his new friend and pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation. The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time. This time he put his face up against the centipede’s box and shouted, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to the pub with me? This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard you the first time! I 'm putting my blooming shoes on!"

ended up having a lot of fun. It wasn’t as scary as first thought and we got photos to prove we did it! We travelled in the dive van to the site and then started with a theory lesson. Then we entered the water from the beach so it was nice and shallow and we completed some exercises designed to put you at ease. Then we went for our first dive in shallow water but later after a break for lunch we got to go back in and try a little deeper. This was the best one as I was so relaxed by then and we saw loads of fish and Octopus. We are all going to book for our Open water Diver licences and we get 10% off future courses and dive kit too. Dive Academy run these courses every day of the year what-ever the weather and my son wants to become an instructor now so he is working towards his Instructor Development Course in November 2013. You only have to book one day before and there is lots of information on the website and facebook. Tel: 966699088 or 648463310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

WHAT'S THAT FLOWER ? The Wild Flowers of Santa Pola/Gran Alacant by Rose Jackson

OLEANDER, Nerium oleander A native plant which grows as a small tree in the wild, mainly along river banks and streams. With its clusters of pink or white flowers and drought resistance, it is favoured by councils to plant along roads and parks etc. and a shrub form has been developed for this purpose. (The picture is of a wild one in the Alicante region). Many have been planted along the Clot, but beware, every part of this plant is highly poisonous ! The milky white sap contains a toxin, which exudes if cut or picked and can affect the heart. It goes without saying that they should be observed and not touched - unless in your garden, when obvious care should be taken whilst pruning. This brings to an end my wildflower ramblings - thanks to Barry and Sandra for featuring them and I do hope some of it has been of interest to some! It is just a great pity that due to the drought in the Winter/Spring, many species did not flower this year, but do look out for them next year, assuming we have a bit of rain! If you would like a copy of any months features, do contact me. rose.jackson1@outlook.com

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

Hot, isn’t it? It’s probably much too tiring to go down to the Clot and see what’s about, you’d rather sit by the pool or on the Carabassi beach sipping an ice-cold drink and topping up your tan. Besides which, you know that if you go out into any dry hot countryside you will be killed by a Cobra or a Rattlesnake, that’s what happens in all the films you’ve seen. In fact there are 5 species of snake in Spain which are venomous, and at least one of them can be found in the Clot. All the more reason, I hear you cry, not to go anywhere near the place. Hundreds of people must die in agony each year from snakebites in Spain! Actually, think again. The annual Spanish death toll from snake bites can be counted on the fingers of one hand. You are far more likely to be killed crossing the road to get to the Clot than from a snake bite, and even if you are unfortunate enough to get bitten, your chances of actually dying from it are very slim. You’re more likely to expire from a bee or wasp sting but snakes have always had a bad press since the Bible, so people react with fear and horror when they see one. This is the Montpellier Snake (in Spanish, Culebra bastarda), which is the largest and probably the commonest snake in Spain, it can become up to 2.5 metres long. It can have a blue-green cast, as shown in the picture, but usually appears as a dull grey snake with a lighter belly. The only glimpse you will probably get of it is seeing it disappear rapidly into the undergrowth – it is far more scared of you than you are of it. It is what is known as a rear-fanged snake, which means that the teeth which supply the venom are at the back of the mouth rather than in the front like the famous Cobra, and you would have to actually stick your finger into the snake’s mouth to become poisoned, and anyone foolish enough to do that will get what they deserve. It’s not even that toxic, being a mild venom which is designed more to help the snake’s digestive process than anything else. The Montpellier snake feeds mostly on lizards, small mammals and frogs, but it will also take small birds and even baby rabbits if it gets the chance. However, things are not always one-way and this snake is itself a favourite prey item of Owls and other raptors such as the Short-toed Eagle and the various members of the Heron and Egret families. It would be a shame if your reaction to seeing one is to find something to chop its head off with, as they are an interesting and mostly peaceful member of the fauna to be found in the Clot.
