Hello everyone,
Next month will be a special milestone for us. TEN years of producing this magazine. 120 monthly editions and they said it would not last!!!!!! If nobody wants to take it over from us, we will continue as we are.
Writing this on 23rd November before the magazine goes to the printer tomorrow, it seems strange to be talking of Christmas.
We still have to get the January editon printed before the Christmas festivities, so do hope all of our contributers will help us by getting their info into us early next month.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our advertisers, readers and contributors for their support throughout this year and Wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy and Healthy New Year.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!
Main news this month, the official opening of the Gran Alacant new market site, which took place on 21st November, with the first market there, taking place on Thursday 27th November. More pictures in this months issue. ....granalacantadvertiser.com... Dear Sandra and Barry, how r u? I like ur magazine a lot especially for the info that it contains and not just the ads. I appreciate a lot of ur innitiative of contacting GA councillor, so the voice of people is heard. Here I am messaging u to bring an issue here regarding the kids park near the correos. (post office). As we all know that it has two gates, the one that opens towards the round about is the main concern for me as a parent.....For more than once, my two year old has just taken away towards the zebra crossing fascinated by the buses and trucks passing by.....Just today it happened again.....All I am asking for is to make a barrier of some kind or build a small gate just at the end lining the sidewalk.....Plsssssss u are my only hope and the only person to convey it to Loreto.....Thanks BOSKY
Loreto is to have talks to solve this for you and others and get a barrier placed there for safety. ......granalacantadvertiser.com...

Hi Barry & Sandra, will be sad to see you retire, but good luck selling & happy retirement soon I hope. (see page 55) In reply to Grahams letter in the November issue, i understand how Graham feels, every month people write in complaining about dog mess not been picked up but nothing is ever done about it. We have been told in the past a dog warden was employed to survey the area, also we have been told to ring a number to inform the police. All a waste of time, dog warden? a joke! Now after permission we might get undercover police , why get permission just do it or is this another put off?. Nobody of authority really gives a damn. Lets face it it is not on their doorstep. Loreto listens, promises but it stops at that. Just out of interest after my letter in October, re Bins, street cleaning etc Loreto said there would be answers in Novembers Advertiser to my questions & complaints. I see there are no answers, is this another complaint swept under the carpet?
For now we have to use the police in uniform and Loreto has had a thank you from people living in Don Pueblo, who have seen dog owners being fined, and have said the the problem is much improved. This problem with dogs is of course, world wide, and hopefully one day somebody can find the ultimate solution. Hopefully our Town Hall can lead the way, if they can get permission to have a plain clothes policeman patrolling these effected areas. As for the rubbish. We have for the last few months been waiting to release some news that may help. But, as always out here, the inititive has had to go through so many hoops that it takes an iternity. Ideas that were set in motion months ago take so much time to finally get the official go ahead. Us non Spanish must realise that unfortunately Spain is much different to Britain. Things that may to us, seem easy to sort out, have to go through the official chanels. Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, with many departments having to have their say.
Best regards Bill .
......granalacantadvertiser.com... The main event that took place in November was the annual M.A.B.S. Cancer support group Variety Show. We can hardly put into words how this show, brings out the best in the people of Gran Alacant. Firstly the venue. Near to the opening of the show, the venue that was to host the event, had to be changed at the 11th hour. Jean telephoned us and many others and again someone came to her rescue with The America Bar and Grill agreeing to use their bar as the new venue. Extreme thanks go to the staff and the owner, who even presented MABS with a cheque on the final night in appreciation of the event. And then, what can we say about Jean Reiterband, who dedicates much of her time organising the show, making the costumes, rehearsing the acts, dancers, singers and on the night shepherding them on and off the stage to keep the show constantly flowing. Then onto the wonderful tight group of performers. Some of the youngsters growing over the years as you see them performing better and better as they grow with experience. To Tony Hall for providing the music throughout the show over the four nights, with whom the show could not go on.

To those behing the scenes, helping the girls and boys with their costume changes and make up to present them to perfection on stage. Our Gran Alacant Councillor Loreto Cascales was present and thoroughly enjoyed the show, broadening her experience of how the community comes together to help a very worthwhile cause. The founder of MABS Jacqui Phillips came to the show and announced at the end that the support group have been able to set up a centre for respite. They have acquired a suite of rooms at a premises out in the hills, for peace and tranquillity, where the sufferers can stay. So finally a big thank you for everyone who gave their time, on stage, off stage, behind the scenes, and of course the Gran Alacant people who filled the seats for all of the four nights. ......granalacantadvertiser.com... Hi Barry and Sandra, the M.A.B.S. Crazy Rock and Roll Show was just that, Crazy. Thank you every one who starred in the show which ran for four nights at the American Rock Bar above Mercadonna in the Gran Alacant commercial centre. We certainly rocked the night away with the rock and roll songs of yesterday. We could have done more nights as the artists performed to a full house every night. Thank you to all of you who supported us and clapped and cheered all our talented thespiens. Will we do it again next year? Well that depends on getting the same venue again. Many thanks again. Jean Reiterbund who does not get out enough. xx
Stop press...the event raised 3,500euros.
......granalacantadvertiser.com... With a budget of no more than 2,000 euros, and always under the premise of reusing materials, the town of Santa Pola has a new park. Specifically, it is located in Gran Alacant, between the cafeteria of the new market and the Sports Area. "Thanks to the management capacity and profitability of materials, has managed to create a more pleasant space of a small green area between the two infrastructures which are an important use for Gran Alacant." This park will also allow the installation of a deck to be managed by the cafe attached to the market. The sports centre is very well used and of course does not as yet have cafe facilities. The cafe built on the market site will be able to be used by all who use the centre. It has been built adjacent to a small park area, that also includes some childrens facilities to tie in with Sports Hall use. Hopefully too, as visitors attend the market site, they may well see the wonderful facilities available at the sports hall. ......granalacantadvertiser.com... As we mentioned in last months issue, re surfacing of some of our roads took place in November. The local police had many times shown concern that various parts of GA needed resurfacing because of how slippery and dangerous they were, especially after rainfall. Again as in many cases, a subsidy was availble from central government and the Town Hall decided that this was a good way GO TO PAGE 10 to spend that money.

The site was named after Don Alejandro Amador Molina, who’s wife cut the tape.

......granalacantadvertiser.com... We were at the Town Hall during November for the presentation of a money donation from the GASP Theatre Group to Luisa from the Santa Pola Red Cross, who was very pleased with the envelope of money, which she said would be put to many good uses. In fact, we have arranged with her and GASP to visit the Red Cross building, to see where the money goes and for us to give our readers m u c h more of an insight to all of good causes the Red Cross helps. This we hope will be in our January issue.
......granalacantadvertiser.com...
We were asked not to publish the issue below, but have decided to do so with many changes to the email to us, so as not to implicate anybody.
There was a concern sent to us talking of a possible purge of Spanish police predominately in the English bars. Taking photographs of entertainment Boards, Dart Boards etc. What is going on. Here in Spain if anybody takes out a denuncia about anybody else, action has to be seen to have been taken. A bar, which has to remain nameless, has taken out denuncias against many named bars, and given details to the police. The police have had to act. It does not necessarily mean they anything will come of it. If it does, watch this space!!!!!!!!
Have a lovely Christmas holiday. Sandra and Barry 10

América Bar and Grill nos dejó hacer el show allí.

Felices fiestas! Feliz Navidad. Sandra y Barry

Hi everybody
In December we will have parades of Moors and Christians held in Alicante and in Monforte del Cid from 5th to 9th.
In Santa Pola, like every year, on December the 10th, at about 8p.m. on the harbour area, we celebrate the arrival of our Madonna Virgen de Loreto.
There are also local fiestas in Alfaz del Pi, Agost, Callosa d’En Sarria. Pilgrimages taking place in Denia and Sella. Also do not forget on the 28th the spectacular flour battle that takes place in Ibi, “Els Enfarinats” a battle of flour.
At the “Casa de Cultura” in Santa Pola there will be concerts held on the 17th, 18th, 20th, 26th and 2nd of January. On the 5th of January there will take place the three Kings Parade. The best one of these parades is the one held in Alcoy. Also I would like to make a special mention of the most important sport event held in Santa Pola, the International Half Marathon Villa de Santa Pola that will be held on the 18th of January at 10:30 a.m.. Come and enjoy this fantastic event. ¡Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you!

PROCEDURE FOR EBOLA IN DOGS AND VETERINARY MEDICINES ADVERTISING

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
This is this year’s last article. We hope our articles have been useful for helping pets owners to solve any problem they might have had these last months, and we would like to remind everybody every suggestion via e-mail or telephone is welcome. In this article we are going to write about 2 different matters: -In the first place we would like to comment we have received from the Vet College the official procedure in case we have a dog suspicious of having contacted Ebola virus. Despite this is very unlikely to happen, instructions are very clear: every dog (the official letter doesn’t mention cats or other pets) considered as a “probable case”, will be euthanized, because there are no isolation facilities for animals in Spain. A “probable case” is a dog that has been living closely with a person with a confirmed diagnosis of Ebola during the transmission period. This situation is very unlikely to happen in Spain (fortunately we are not suffering an Ebola outbreak like Africa), but remember the case of that Spanish nurse whose dog was put to sleep a few weeks ago. There is no scientific evidence which confirms a dog can catch the disease or transmit the virus. As a matter of fact no case of Ebola infection in dogs has been reported so far, but this doesn’t mean dogs are completely unable to “pass” the virus to humans. -In the second place, we would like to explain how does veterinary medicines advertising work. Sometimes we can see an antiparasitic medicine which covers fleas. A few months later we notice the same medicine is able to cover fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and mites. So, what has happened? The medicine is the same, but it has been registered for treating other parasites (or even, for being used in other pet species). Registering a medicine (antiparasitics, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, etc), costs a lot of money. The registration procedure and the rates to pay are different depending on the country. For this reason, the same medicine may be registered in Spain just for dogs, and in England for dogs, cats and ferrets. Apart from the price, the registration also depends on what kind of assays have been performed: sometimes we can see “not to be used in animals under 2 kg”. The medicine is probably safe for those patients, but it hasn’t been confirmed 100% because they didn’t use at the assays a number of small patients big enough for being completely sure. We all know the goal of advertising is to sell, and the goal of Vets is to improve animal quality of life, not to sell expensive medicines. A responsible Vet should always recommend the easiest and cheapest way for obtaining the desired result. Sometimes we don’t recommend the most expensive product, or the one with the widest registration, or the one everybody knows from TV commercials, because in some cases, a better diet or brushing the pet more often is enough… Our new year intention will be, same as always, to keep advising our clients and helping our patients and to try to improve our professional skills, and, of course, to keep the illusion for our task alive. Merry Xmas and happy 2015 for all our readers.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of you.
If an alien landed his UFO on earth on the 25th December, and decided to analyse what the human diet was, he’d probably come to the conclusion that it was all turkey and Xmas pud. You’ve already looked at my photo and realised that it is a Heron, and therefore it just eats fish. You would be as wrong as our imaginary alien. Yes, fish make a high proportion of the Heron’s diet, but don’t think for one minute that is all it eats. A Heron will gobble just about anything that can get down its throat, and anything its digestive juices will cope with. Fundamentally what we have here is a flying dagger on stilts which has 5 rules for eating: l Stand around and wait for something to come near you l Stab it with your beak l If it is suitably subdued, swallow it l If it isn’t, bash it against some rocks or drown it l Swallow
A few years ago, that esteemed bastion of British Journalism, The Sun, published a shock horror story and photo about a Heron eating a duckling, complete with gasps of outrage that a Heron would do such a thing. Never mind a duckling, I have seen pictures of a Heron eating a fully-grown Mallard drake; in fact, any of the birds you might see on the lake in the Clot are fair game if they don’t look out for themselves. More often than not, these will be sick or injured birds which just can’t get out of the way of that lethal dagger. It’s not just other birds which can fall foul of the Heron. Rats, mice, amphibians, snakes – anything in fact which comes down to the water is considered fair prey. Yes, that even includes the rabbits you will see hopping round the edge of the pools. Just about the only animal which can hold its own against a Heron in the Clot would be one of the local foxes, although a fox cub would be in considerable danger. The Heron fears nothing (except for man), and is the unregarded King of the Clot. The bird shown is a Grey Heron (Garza real) which is with us all year round; the similar but darker Purple Heron is usually only found in summer. There is often a Heron lurking somewhere within the Clot, if it takes to the air, that huge, slow-flapping outline is unmistakeable. A British birdwatcher once regaled me with a list of things that he knew Herons had eaten, but in view of the forthcoming celebrations I won’t tell you some of the worst things. Enjoy your festive meal! You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
