Hello
Two milestones this month. Another Valentines day on the 14th and our 46th Wedding Anniversary on the 8th. How time flies.
I think it must have been our fault that the snow appeared on the mountain on the 19th Jan, (pic in this issue), we had only said to our daughters the day before that there had been no snow so far this year, luckily it didn´t stay long.
As we have said before, we are not journalists, we just like to give a report of what goes on on Gran Alacant. The Town Hall supplies us with information relevant to Santa Pola as well as Gran Alacant, which we feel is very important to pass on to you, most of the time we can attend different events and take pictures but on some occasions it is impossible so we are grateful to the Town Hall reporter/photographer for sending info.
Please see Whats In the Clot article on page 53 for very important information, especially for Pet owners. Have a good month Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was with Mickey Mouse.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Christmas is over. New Year is over Life and our magazine, goes on, and on. A new bin is coming to a road near you. Around March or April. A few months back we were told about new bins but were not allowed to print the news until everything was done and money put in place. This month, finally, the news was given. We have over the last few months given replies about the state of the old bins, knowing that new ones were on the plans, so sometimes have had to print rather obscure replies. A phone call to us over the Christmas period asked why many of the GA rubbish bins are sited next to zebra crossings, making it very difficult to see people crossing. ....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... Pictures are from the Christmas sports sessions arranged by GRD Sports Association at the GA Sports Centre, who each year arrange this activity to highlight all of the sports that take place throughout the year. This wonderful sports facility is well used and available to anyone to go and enjoy all on offer.

BELOW IS A PRESS RELEASE SENT TO US BY THE TOWN HALL, in addition to our report in last months issue. Great excitement in Santa Pola as the Skate park opens. An inauguration took place at the Skatepark of Santa Pola, an innovative facility funded by the Plan for Tourism and equipped with multipurpose courts where you can practice various forms of skateboarding, skating, breakdance, etc. There are also three rehearsal rooms for bands. Mayor Miguel Zaragoza, accompanied by the councillors of Urbanism, Lola Gadea and Tourism, Loreto Serrano, among other members of the municipal corporation and local authorities officially opened the facility designed for young people and is expected to attract many fans from other municipalities. Over two hundred people have already attended this sport and leisure facility, especially a lot of young people, with their skateboards, scooters, bicycles or inline skates looking forward to the time to test the tracks when they were officially opened . The skate park is buily on an area of 4,936 m2 in the sports area Els Xiprerets, along the road of Elche. The project consists of a series of multipurpose courts where you can practice various forms of skateboarding and skating, plus an auxiliary building. The slopes offer two large "pool" (bathtubs to practice skating), various obstacles, a zone of break dance and other initiation to skating. The main building has a kiosk-bar, store, female and male toilets three perfectly soundproof rehearsal rooms

Lola Gadea stressed that "young people have participated in the design of the park and in the monitoring of the works that have been carried out, with good quality construction with full accessibility criteria, maximum safety practitioners and sustainability of facilities for its low maintenance ". The project has been funded by the Tourism Competitiveness Plan "International Sports Tourism" and paid for in three equal parts between the

central government, the Generalitat Valenciana and the City, with a budget of 509,575 euros.
There has been a certain amount of critism about the amount of money spent on this park, but, our Town Hall has only provided one third of the cost. The critics, have however, been pleasantly surprised at the number of youngsters enjoying the facility. ....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... PRESS RELEASE sent to us on January 16th
We always as near as possible print press releases as we get them sent to us. We do not put our slant upon it or change it in any way to suit our own opinions. The City of Santa Pola approves municipal budget of 30.5 million euros. The municipal corporation has this morning approved the budgets of the City of Santa Pola 2015, amounting to 30,535,249.13 euros, with the votes for the PP government team, the abstention of the PSOE and the refusal of Compromís and EU. They are few, sustainable, realistic, austere and responsible, and to maintain the low level of indebtedness of the City Council social budgets. For the first time the corporation approves a municipal budgets in January, which in this case increased by

Martínez, defined the budget as "social, sustainable, realistic, austere and responsible. Maintains the municipal social programs and economic support for social collaboration games, education and transportation, home care and various cultural and sports associations increases our city. " Also "assignments of Social Services increase to relieve many families who have a serious economic or social exclusion risk of deterioration." You can see on the print out, how money has beenadjusted to the various departments. Due to a great deal of re arrangement at the Town Hall the budget for the 1st time has been able to be decided around 8 months earlier than usual, given much more time to get started on various projects.

....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... In an earlier edition we mention the dangers for children at the park running out onto the road and asked for a gate to be installed. This has been considered but the Town Hall feel that it would impede ambulances, fire engines, staff trucks from the only acess to and from the park. ....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... Again in the past it was asked for a rumble strip to slow cars down on approach to the first roundabout on GA. This has now been laid and the fierceness of it will certainly slow down the traffic. ....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... Mothers of children at the GA school have asked the Town Hall if they could provide somewhere that the children could meet all together for weekend get togethers. (something like a British Youth Club. This has been taken on board and with the aproval of mums, a room at the Life Resort has been provided on Friday afternoons and all day Saturdays. Mums said not Sunday, this is homework day. It is hoped that the get togethers will be well supported. ....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.... Thanks to the Town Hall for our fabulous front cover picture. plus the two winners shown here. 9,360 took park with Kenyans taking most of the honours. Vincent Yator lived up to his status as favorite and increased his pace to get completely alone on the red carpet and reduce the record by 17 seconds, recording a time of 1:00:15. Georgina Rono won the ladies event in 1:11:02

The organization in charge of Athletic Club and the City of Santa Pola was very satisfied with the outcome of the 26th event. What was most important was that, the city was buzzing with this great show. Throughout the weekend Santa Pola has been invaded by sport not only with the half marathon, but also for the mini marathon which attracted over 1,500 children.

LYNELI OPENS HER DOORS AGAIN!!
2 years ago I had become very ill and ended up in hospital for 8 days. Something I had no control over due to a tick bite, which caused my body to shut down. This was just the start of the summer season, so as you can imagine I had lost my summer trade. Once I had got my strength back I came back to work. But unfortunately I had experienced the crisis like a lot of people did. So then I made my decision to close my salon and thought maybe I could sell it. I was closed for approx 18 months and thought I would go mobile. Some clients prefered this, others didn’t. I was able to accommodate some disabled clients that couldn’t get out. I was very grateful and would like to thank those clients that supported me when times became difficult. But also soon began to realise that mobile hairdressing was not enough to survive on, so, early last year decided that maybe it was time to try something different, so I trained as a care worker, caring for private clients in their homes. This was something I enjoyed but wasn’t thrilled that I had to travel back and forth to the UK to work, when my family and home is here in Spain. So decided that I should stay here and think, What should I do! as now still had to work to survive. So in December 2014, all in a week, I had made my decision to re-open my salon doors and do what I love and do best. So had my inorgaration day on 18th December, and so glad I did. As you can see by the photograph, all went well. So Lyneli would like to welcome clients old and new by offering a 10% discount through February as a re-opening offer on producing this advert, and look forward to seeing you all in the future

San Anton or Saint Anthony is
considered the patron saint or
protector of the animals and on the
Feast of Saint Anthony thousands of
people take their pets to church to be blessed. There was a traditional
benediction of the animals in the
main square in Santa Pola. While it
was mostly dog owners lining up to
receive benediction from the local
priest, there were also families with
their birds, bunnies, cats, etc. The Pet
Owners Association of Santa Pola and
Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) was there with an informational booth. In
addition to telling folks about our
dog beach and dog park projects, we sold items to raise money and
collected donations for our food
bank. ASPETGA’s food bank collects
pet food and other items to distribute to needy families in the community.
We welcome any donations.

Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site. To view more animals for adoption go to: www.petsinspain.com If you would like to advertise an animal email: info@petsinspain.info Imagine Alfie with a big bushy tail and floppy ears, because this is what you would see if the heartless people that had him as a puppy had not cut them off! It is done without any anesthetic or consideration of a dogs ability to recover from infection! Alfie was in the fields and rescued, very thin and very happy to be picked up. He is a beautiful small dog and we believe he is between 3 or 4 years. Call: 645 469 253 Jessy was found at just 5 days old and has been bottle fed in a foster home. She is now around 13 weeks old and in need of a forever home. She has been brought up with other cats and dogs and is very affectionate. Call: 645 469 253

We have 7 Pointer puppies who all look very much like these 2 and they are in need of new homes, they are now around 9 weeks old and will be medium to large when fully grown. They are all in excellent health and love to be cuddled. Call: 645 469 253
Bella was living on the streets for 6 months and we tried desperately to catch her but she was just too afraid, thankfully from perseverance and lots of wonderful people helping we managed to catch her. Bella is around 2 years old and has been to the vets for a complete health check and was sterilised, the vet discovered she is blind in one eye but it doesn’t bother her. She is now in a foster home with another dog and cat and unbelievably she is so affectionate and just wants to be loved. Call: 645 469 253

MAY AN ANIMAL HAVE HICCUPS?
Hiccups is produced by an irritation of the diaphragm, so, every animal which has a diaphragm (the mammals) may suffer hiccups. Diaphragm is a muscle which separates thorax and abdomen and has a role at breathing mechanism. Sometimes tightens sharply and hiccups appear. Hiccups is a benign condition which usually last for a few seconds or minutes and disappears by itself despite all those home remedies that are very well known (and normally don’t make any difference). Since dogs, cats, ferrets, hamsters, etc, have a diaphragm, they may have hiccups in the same way as people: the animal is calm and starts producing a peculiar noise (may vary according to the species) which is hiccups. It is more often seen in puppy dogs, but it may appear at every age. -When do I have to worry if my pet has hiccups? If it doesn`t stop in 24 hours, must be checked by a Vet, since it may indicate a neurological irritation caused by a tumour (extremely uncommon!!!). A puppy may suffer hiccups after meals every day, without suffering any illness. Which is not normal is a crisis that lasts for more than 24 hours. If we are talking of birds or reptiles, hiccups cannot appear, because they have no diaphragm, so, if a budgie looks like is having hiccups, should be taken to the Vet, because it can’t be hiccups, but a neurological problem. It’s important to remember that an animal which has hiccups is normally quiet an calm (sitting or even lying down) while it happens, so, if my cat looks like is having “hiccups” but its mouth is open and its facial expression indicates anguish, definitively is not hiccups but feline asthma or something similar. Sometimes, the owner reports that the puppy “tries to be sick” after meals, but looks happy and never vomits: that’s hiccups. In all those cases, a very valuable tool for diagnosis is filming the animal during the crisis. After checking the video, the Vet will know if it is something to worry about or not.
INCREDIBLE, BUT TRUE On Monday 19th of January we heard at the radio that Crevillente Town Hall has declared war on dog poos in a very funny way: they want to collect blood from every dog in order to have a DNA sample from every dog in Crevillente (??!!). After that, when a dog’s owner leaves a poo at the street, the Police will go and collect a sample of the mess (can you imagine it? Something like the scatological version of CSI) and, via the DNA, they will determinate which dog is the “source” of the problem, so the owner will be filed. Who is going to pay for both blood and poo sampling? Right! Every dog’s owner in Crevillente, of course (only the guilty will pay poo sampling, but both innocent and guilty will be forced to pay €45 per dog for the mandatory blood sampling). Believe it or not, we swear we heard this last 19th of January, not the 1st of April…

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
It’s that time of year again – the season when some irritating fuzzballs are out and about causing havoc, mayhem and queues at Accident and Emergency centres all over Spain, and I make no apologies for repeating myself on this important subject!
Take a look at my picture. It’s an amusing image; seven furry little caterpillars moving along nose to tail, all intent on getting to a place of safety where they can burrow into the ground in order to pupate and change into moths. You might be tempted perhaps with the idea of making them go into a circle and see how long they will go round and round.
This is a very bad idea! These are Processionary Pine Caterpillars (Procesionaria del Pino in Spanish). Many of you will know that there are various assorted nasties in our area, from spiders to snakes and other inhabitants of your worst nightmares, but the one thing you should be very wary of is this inoffensive-looking little creepy-crawly. Over the next two or three months they will be dropping out of their nests in pine trees and onto the streets, forming long bootlace threads as they follow each other in the search for some soft ground to burrow into as they get ready to pupate. They develop into unremarkable small brown moths, but it is the processions which cause all the trouble. Their defence mechanism is the small hairs which grow on their bodies. These are well-nigh indestructible, and if they get anywhere on you they will cause a highly intense irritation which may last for weeks if untreated. Dogs and other pets are also at high risk – if they get these hairs on their bodies or paws they will try to lick them off, causing major damage to the tongue and mouth. The hairs remain actively dangerous even after the caterpillar has been swatted, crushed, burned or trodden on. They will stay on your shoes and clothing and be carried into your house, they will float in the air after a fire, and they cannot be washed off clothing or hoovered off furniture easily. The caterpillars have few natural predators – Hoopoes will eat them occasionally, but it takes so long for the birds to strip them of their hairy bits that they don’t bother that often. There is a bird called the Greater Spotted Cuckoo which will eat them, but there are few around our part of Spain. Cold weather doesn’t work either, they can stay alive in temperatures of down to minus 6 degrees. Suggested remedies against these little monsters include spraying the nests as soon as they are discovered with a 50/50 mix of water and bleach, but this doesn’t work when the caterpillars are about to go on the march. More drastic remedies include shooting holes in the nests so that birds can get at them before the nasty hairs develop. The best advice is to stay well clear, keep children and dogs away from them, and pray that they don’t march in the direction of your front door, in which case call Seprona for help! See you next month.
