Hello everyone,
As our magazine rolls on and on, now 114 monthly editions, we keep breaking milestones. Did you know that last month we celebrated six years of our magazine online. We were also the first magazine in the area to use page turning software. All of this, each month, is uploaded for us by our colleague Robin Bonathan. Thank you Robin! Our front cover pictures helps to highlight all of the good, achieved by people on Gran Alacant.
The first thoughts the teddy brought was how can he help to raise money for Charity. The pictures of Teddy & Jess in this issue raising money for Charity, tells their stories, plus the GASP production donating some of their profit also to Charity. ...and Mary, George, Rob & Norman all together at Ocean, raising money for M.A.B.S. on July 17th with a tandem paragliding experience, weather permitting!! So many people using their time to help others, summing up OUR Gran Alacant!!!!!

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We had a phone call asking us to enquire why all of the flags on the GA Centre do not include the British Union Jack,
WHERE IS THE UNION JACK
particuarly that it is mostly Brits that keep the centre in business??
As our photographs show. It is on one area but not the other. ----------------
We did ask why we have to tolerate beggars outside our supermarkets and on our Thursday market. -------------Gran Alacants first Charity shop is to open very soon. It is the Easy Horse Care Charity and will be situated near to the bowls club and the Deutsche Bank. The shop is looking for a manager and volunteers to help out in the shop. If you are interested, please ring Sue on 652021980
The Town Hall have offered help for the project in any way they can. ---------------
An email to us:
Dear readers,I have noticed that in the past month or two, Santa Pola council is concentrating in cleaning the area around the refuse bins. Sometimes we have noticed that they do it twice a week! fantastic, we are very pleased with this as before (after me complaining to the council) there were loads of grease stains all around them in Calle Monte De Santa Pola where I reside. That site was quite disgusting to the point that I was struggling to go near them to put my refuse bag inside. All the stains have now gone, and surely that must be more hygienic for all concerned especially kids that would carry the germs under the sole of their shoes. Now, one big problem still persists, and that is the state (very poor) of the refuse bins, and not only in my street, we have seen better ones in the back streets of Bangkok or in the street of a bomb site,so I say why can't

we get new ones, like Elche council, they can be seen in Arenales del Sol, they are made in a kind of fiberglass and they look very nice. Many thanks, Giuseppe Messina
New bins are hopefully not too far away, but in the interim, this month, all bins are being repaired and repainted, so that’s a start!!!! -------------------
To be budgeted in 2015
The Town Hall are pushing for improvements to the bad turning off the N332 into Santa Pola by the JM hotel and improving the acceleration and deceleration lanes at the entrance and exit of Gran Alacant on the N-332 helping us to get off the urbanisation in a much safer way. ------------

Many efforts have been made to improve this bend. Speed limit signs, rumble strips, widening of the road and a central reservation have all been installed. Nobody would crash on the bend if they drove sensibly at the correct speed limit. -----------------
â‚Ź 532,000 is to be spent on repair work on the bridge off Gran Alacant. Continuing the investment chapter, in May it was unanimously approved a budget of 532,436 euros, to overhaul the bridge on and off Gran Alacant. According to the Mayor, Councillor of Infrastructure, Loreto Serrano, "intends to launch this work expected to begin in the autumn, once traffic numbers have dropped considerably since, in summer, the inconvenience would be too great for road users." Another positive note is that the municipal technical team has reduced the cost by 60,000 euros initially intended to the cost of the project, "because it will take advantage

to

traffic." The project will be built with funds from the City of Santa Pola, "fulfilling the election commitment that the council had with the citizens."

There will not be any other changes to the bridge othen that repair work. ----------------
We mentioned how many of the new street signs were being turned around, pointing in the wrong direction. It could be vandals or could it be the wind. Whilst drinking our coffee in a bar near the clot, we watched, on a windy day, the wind gradually turning the signs into a different direction. Loreto called the people in charge, to fix the problem. -------By the time you read this edition the new market site will either be open or will have opened on 3rd July.
Yes, we know it has taken a long time. We know the build was stopped for 6 months whilst discussions of money, took place between out Town Hall, Valencian Government and the builders. But, at the end of the day, we have yet another wonderful facility for us all on Gran Alacant. ---------
NEW WAY TO PAY THE SEWERAGE SYSTEM (supplied to us by the Town Hall) Due to the doubts that our citizens may have regarding the new payment of the sewerage system, Miguel Zaragoza, the mayor of Santa Pola, has wanted to declare that the citizen is paying the same amount of money. He said the City Council understands the stuations of the families and wants to improve the ease of payment of this tax. So, this tax is now a payment by instalments every three months included in the water bill. The average for the payment of the sewerage system is around 40 euros per year. Till 2013 this payment was made at once. From 2014, it has been divided into four bills paid every three months of 10 euros each payment more or less (but this amount of money will vary depending on the type of house you may have in your water rate bill). You should also know that letters have been sent to all the owners of the houses. Anyway, if you may have some doubt, you can come to the Town Hall Office and you will be properly informed. ---------There is another tax law released to our Town Hall from Central Government, to charge iva on swimming pools. Either single pools in house grounds as well as communal pools. -----------We reminded Loreto again on the bench people are asking for on the long hill up from the roundabout which houses the new fountain. more news next month .........

Nadie se accidentaría en esta curva si condujeran a la velocidad adecuada ----------------€ 532,000 is to be spent on repair work on the bridge off Gran Alacant.
Sandra y Barry

G.A.S.P. THEATRE GROUP Hi Barry and Sandra, First of all a big thank you for all the publicity you give to GASP Theatre Group. It goes a long way to putting those elusive bums on seats! Secondly, GASP would like to thank, through your magazine, all those who came to see our latest production "Outside Edge" at the Life Resort on 4th and 5th of June. We put lots of time and hard work into our productions and it is great to hear the laughs coming ( sometimes when we weren't expecting them!) Special mention must go to Terry Lacey who not only acts, but makes great sets out of the most unpromising bits and pieces, without him our shows wouldn't be nearly so well dressed. At the moment, we are resting before deciding if and when our next show will be. Unfortunately, we will be losing Linda Millar as an actor as she is moving up the coast, Mollie Jewitt feels she needs a break and Chris and I are returning to the UK at the end of the month and due to family and health problems, not sure when we will be back. We would love to recruit some new members, anyone interested please contact David Ashley on 966 181 113. Once again, thank you for all your assistance. You can follow us on facebook at www.facebook.com/GASPtheatre. Penny Rooke

WHAT'S THAT FLOWER ? The Wild Flowers of Santa Pola/Gran Alacant by Rose Jackson
Spanish Broom, Spartium junceum A shrub-like plant usually 500cm to a meter tall - with many virtually leafless stems. The yellow flowers are pea like and fragrant, appearing in clusters towards the ends of the stems. Grows in dry sandy places, this one was on the coast under the Santa Pola cliffs.

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a Sign on it saying: ' Free to good home. You want it, you take it. ' For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice. He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal.So he changed the sign to read: ' Fridge for sale â‚Ź50.00 ' The next day someone stole it !

One day God was looking down at earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on...So He called His angels and sent one to earth for a time. When the angel returned, he told God, 'Yes, it is bad on earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not. God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.' So God called another angel and sent her to earth for a time. When the angel returned she went to God and said, 'Yes, it's true. The earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good...' God was not pleased. So He decided to e-mail the 5% who were good, because He wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going. Do you know what the e-mail said? Okay, I was just wondering, because I didn't get one either.

OUR BEAR RAISED 270 EUROS FOR THE BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL. “When donated it was thought to be too big for the Table Top Sale and too lonely at the Auction House so some clever person thought to run a raffle over a few weeks. The winner, Terry Lacey, will now find a good home for our bear. Our sincerest thanks to all of you who bought raffle tickets and to all the tireless efforts of the sellers of the tickets. Well Done. Seems we constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare running out of money? What's interesting is the first group "worked for" their money, but the second didn't.

A DAY IN THE OCEAN
One thing often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola on google, rang them up and booked onto their famous Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine Reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the dive centre 10 minutes away. We had a fantastic trip and when we sat down for Tea, Coffee or Beers afterwards they told me I could actually go scuba diving!! I thought it was only the Jacques Cousteau’s and professionals that could do it. We booked to do the Discover Scuba Diving course designed to teach you step by step and although I was nervous to begin with the instructor was very professional and we
I was reading an article last night about fathers and sons and memories came flooding back of the time I took my son out for his first pint. Off we went to our local which is only two blocks from the house. I got him a Fosters He didn't like it – so I had it.
Then I got him a Carling Black Label, he didn't like it, so I had it. It was the same with the 1664 Lager and Premium Dry Cider.
By the time we got down to the whisky I could hardly push the bloody pram back home.

ended up having a lot of fun. It wasn’t as scary as first thought and we got photos to prove we did it! We travelled in the dive van to the site and then started with a theory lesson. Then we entered the water from the beach so it was nice and shallow and we completed some exercises designed to put you at ease. Then we went for our first dive in shallow water but later after a break for lunch we got to go back in and try a little deeper. This was the best one as I was so relaxed by then and we saw loads of fish and Octopus. We are all going to book for our Open water Diver licences and we get 10% off future courses and dive kit too. Dive Academy run these courses every day of the year what-ever the weather and my son wants to become an instructor now so he is working towards his Instructor Development Course in November 2013. You only have to book one day before and there is lots of information on the website and facebook. Tel: 966699088 or 648463310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

On Sunday 25th May the InterClub held their annual car rally. The course was over a distance of about 50 km and took in some lovely country lanes. Bob & Jackie Rowley and Ian & Wendy Sheridan finished first and covered over 60 km. Second were the Jolly girls team of Angela, Maureen, Joyce and Ken who covered 53 km. Third were the team of John Dennington and his ladies who covered 67 km. The meal of salad, burger & chips, Ice cream and coffee held in the swimming pool area of the Rincon after the finish was very welcome. Both Bob and John thanked the organisers for another successful event. The InterClub regularly holds quizzes, dinner dances and welcomes new members. Please visit our website on www.freewebs.com/interclubarenales/ for more info.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Regular readers of my little column may remember that last month I spoke about one of the loudest birds in the Clot, the Great Reed Warbler. Hopefully you will all have trooped down to the main hide to listen out for this noisy bird, only to be mystified when you heard something else which makes just as much of a racket. When one starts up, you will have heard lots more of them, and wondered just what this croaky orchestra might be. Say hello to the Iberian Water Frog, one of the commonest amphibians in our area – indeed it is simply known as Rana Comun (Common Frog) in Spanish. It is about the size of the UK’s Green Frog, but as you can see from my photo it has bright golden eyes. The green dots are duckweed, but the basic colour can range through greyish (as in this example) through brown and yellow to green, often with distinctive black markings around the mouth as seen here, and with a lighter underbelly.
They will have begun to quieten down a bit by now, as the main breeding season which starts in March is almost over, and they will spend the rest of the summer fattening themselves up ready for hibernation during the winter months. Some of them might have a second breeding season during the autumn, when the croak chorus will start up again.
You may see them sitting quietly on rocks or clumps of algae, soaking up some rays, but if one decides to start a croaking session others will also start up as though they are competing in the Frog Eurovision contest. The judges are the females, and it seems that the frog with the most piercing sound will win their affections, although if they are interrupted during courtship they will dive and separate, and if the female can’t find the male she was with she will simply take the nearest available male and carry on! The females lay balls of spawn containing up to one thousand eggs at a time.
All this noise does of course mean that they are taking a big risk in advertising their whereabouts, and there are plenty of predators in the Clot who will snap them up. The Little Owl which is regularly seen in the Clot is a major predator, as well as all the heron and egret species, and of course the tadpoles form a large part of the diet of Moorhens and Coots during the frogs breeding season. It’s just as well that so many eggs are laid.
You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
