Hello
Firstly, we have has so many organisations asking for FREE space this month, that we have done our best to accommodate them all. We went to press before the results of the local elections so could not include any election news this month. Our front cover picture shows the new walkway under construction off the cliff edge near the lighthouse, looking out towards Tabarca. We hope to print more pictures next month. (the construction will be paid for mostly by Europe for a heritage site, nothing from our Town Hall). Our Gran Alacant advertisers locations are shown on the GA map at the back of this magazine, so no need for addresses on many of the adverts.
Have a good month Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 59.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!
Applications are, as you know, in, for a new school on Gran Alacant. That does not solve the previous problem of too many children for the existing school, so.......below is a press release to us. Wednesday May 6, the Regional Director of Education, Paul Ortega, and a technician from Valencia met with municipal officers; the Councillor for Education, Thomas Martinez; and the Mayor of Santa Pola, Miguel Zaragoza, in the Gran Alacant school, to determine the redevelopment of municipal land annexed to the school. Thus, this area will house ten prefabricated classrooms of 45 square meters, including those that already exist, so "school Vicenta RusO recover their public spaces," said Martinez. In addition, a classroom of 30 square meters with support functions, a warehouse of 15 square meters for different uses and toilets for students and teachers will be installed. Some improvements will need more land. It will provide future installations for a recreation area with pergola, a sports court, a perimeter fence and a garden area to create "a friendly environment," said Martinez. There will be three classrooms for dining, to be located at a point equidistant between the school and the municipal space, to improve accessibility and relieve current shifts for dining.

blue skies graced the M.A.B.S. table top sale at Sunset bar on Wednesday 29th of April. Tourists and residents joined in the atmostphere and all the fun of the fair. Cakes, bric a brac and an assortment of different stalls helped to raise the grand sum of 688 euros 28 cents and 2 foreign coins. Many thanks go out to Videll and Christina of Sunset bar, Mary Flannagan of Oceans bar and Oduills for their kind donations to mabsy duck, the raffle and all the ladies and gentlemen who ran the stalls. As our regular readers know, we have had so many people go on holiday with our magazine. Below must be the most bizzare ever.....
Hi Barry & Sandra,
We have just been to Sweden on holiday and stayed with our Swedish neighbours from here in Gran Alacant, whilst we were there we were introduced to the world famous Swedish fish delicacy know as Surstromming, here is a link to Wikipedia all about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surstr%C3%B6mmi ng Our friends, I now use the term lightly, advised us that to get the best benefit from the experience we should shut ourselves into a glass greenhouse as the can was opened, forever now known to us as the gas chamber. There to eat the said fish delicacy on cracker bread with butter, red & white onions and potato. Before the event I must have asked at least 20 Swedish persons about Surstromming and all pulled very strange faces and said they would never do it....not to be deterred Alison Clark & myself bravely entered into the spirit of this cultural experience. I have attached a couple of photos of the event if you could find a little corner for them in your next magazine, I am sure that the Nordic neighbours of Gran Alacant will find this very amusing. Photo a is the unopened tin with a copy of your magazine.
Photo d is the first taste, please note the amused looks of our ‘friends’ Photo e is Rab Clark’s reaction to the event, from inside the main house 50 feet from the greenhouse. Many Thanks

MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Dial Prix)
MONTE MAR 10th ANNIVERSARY
Friday 1st May, a SABA Summer League Game: Monte Mar Toro –v- Quesada Lancasters Another lovely hot morning with some Bowling to match the weather by both the Toro and the Lancasters. The rinks were shared 3 each but got the extra points for winning the shots 111 to 99. This gave the Toro 8 points, the Lancasters 6. Well done to the winning rinks of Sheila Roberts, John Cagier and skip David Eades, Ronnie Cairns, June Young and skip Chris Merry and Geraldine Fisher, Janet Gatward and skip Gordon Fisher.
Saturday 2nd May , an Invitation Game: Monte Mar –v- The CBBA Provincial Team. This fixture was arranged as part of our celebration and features 6 rinks, 3 Ladies and 3 Men’s teams. On this occasion the Monte Mar Ladies beat the Provincial 2 rinks to 1 but the Men lost 2 rinks to 1, so the honours were shared. The Provincial narrowly won the shot difference though. The game was followed by a dinner in the Rincon Restaurant. Following the meal, and a few drinks, the results were announced and Monte Mar raised their glasses to our visitors. Each player on this occasion was given a specially created pin badge as a memento of them being part of our Anniversary Week.
Sunday 3rd May, and Invitation Game: The Annual 4 Nations Tournament In this event 6 teams of rinks from the 4 Nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete for an overall trophy. The result is based on the total shots gained by each Nation throughout the full-days bowling. On this occasion the England Team won the trophy by attaining a total of 112 shots in their 6 games. Narrowly missing the total by only 3 were Scotland with 109 shots, followed by Ireland with 100 and Wales with 96. Brian Gardiner, the Captain of the Welsh Team presented
24
Arthur Brown, Captain of the afternoon session for England, with the Trophy following a really very closely contested full days bowling. Although not a ‘Monte Mar’ event our club was well represented and there were several Monte Mar spectators there to support the efforts of the bowlers. Monday 4th May, a SABA Summer League Game: Monte Mar Toro –v- Greenlands Glosters. In the second fixture in 4 days the Toro were again at home, this time to Greenlands Glosters. They achieved a better result, despite most of the rinks being fiercely contested in the very hot conditions, by winning 5 of the rinks and drawing on the sixth. This, with a shot difference of 32 gave Monte Mar a 13 points to 1 win. Keith Simpson, Chris Harding, Skip Dave Melville 18-14. Sheila Roberts, Wendy Oxley, Skip David Eades 22-11. Denise Ashberry, Len Counsell, Skip Chris Merry 16-15. Ken White, Joe Ridley, Skip Diane Ridley 17-13. Ethel Finan, Janet Gatward, Skip Tony Finan 26-14. Lynne Armitage, Joan Harding, Skip Colin Armitage 15-15. A great performance by a depleted Toro team with a number of regular players absent, so congratulations to all the team members for a splendid team effort.
Tuesday 5th May, an Invitation Game: Monte Mar –v- CBBA President’s Team Again, as part of our celebrations, Monte Mar invited the CBBA President, Jean Cooper, to select a team from the CBBA area to play against Monte Mar. The format was 2 pairs; 2 trips and 2 rinks. After a good morning bowling Monte Mar won both the rinks games, one of the trips and one of the pairs. This gave Monte Mar a win of 4 games to 2 and the overall shots by 103 to 94. After the game our thanks were given to all those from the CBBA side
who had played. They were provided with the memento badge.
Wednesday 6th May, a VCL Game: The Monte Mar Team visited Quesada as part of the VCL season. Our rinks team gained a creditable draw 20 shots each and Keith Simpson had a great win 21 – 12 in the singles. The other three disciplines lost but the pairs only narrowly. The overall result was 3 points to Monte Mar and 9 to Quesada. On the same day the Monte Mar Club held a Ladies –v- Men Game as part of the anniversary. After a ‘friendly’ morning bowling it is reported that the Men narrowly won. By the time the VCL team got back from Quesada the party was still in full swing. Another good Monte Mar Day.
Thursday 7th & Friday 8th May, a special two-day event for Monte Mar: Entry to this event was open to Bowlers, Social Members, Ex-Members and Guests. In all 36 players took part. 12 Teams of 3 were selected and these competed in singles, pairs and trips games over the 2 days. Day 1 was from 10.30am until 4.45pm at which time the Club Owner provided a buffet for all the players and guests. Our councillor, Loreto Cascales, came along to join in the fun. After a second day of bowling under hot Spanish Sun a team emerged as winners. The team of Jan Soars, Wendy Oxley and Tony Finan won 5 of their 6 games and were declared winners. At 7.30pm on the Friday evening 65 club members and guests mustered in the El Rincon Restaurant for our Anniversary Party. We all had a very good evening with dinner, a table quiz, a prize ‘give-away’ and dancing to DJ Tony Hall. During the evening the Chairman presented Jan, Wendy and Tony with their trophies for winning the bowling event.
Saturday 9th May, our Charity Fund Raiser and Cake & Bling Sale. Our bowls green was set out as a ‘fun course’ and players paid to our charity fund to ‘have a go’. Various targets and goals were set and each rink had a different challenge. After about 2½ hours the sun and the drink took its toll and Barrie
Woodfine was declared the winner of the trophy. 140€ was raised for charity. During the charity event the club held a Cake and Bling stall to raise money for club funds. A considerable amount was raised and we thank all the ladies who baked, made and sold these items on behalf of the club.
Sunday 10th May, our finale. The Chairman’s Team –v- The Captain’s Team. This is an annual event but it was staged this week to coincide with our Anniversary. The Chairman and the Captain selected 6 teams of 4 each from the 48 players who elected to play. A standard 18 end game of rinks bowls was then played. After all the games were completed the Captain’s side had won 4 and the Chairman’s side 2. The Captain’s side had also won the overall shot difference and so was declared winner. Some of the non-playing Ladies had prepared a substantial buffet for us after the game and this was enhanced by the owner who provided some chips. Our thanks again go to them. After the meal the Chairman’s wife, Barbara Farrelly, presented Club Captain, Chris Merry, with the trophy.
That concluded ten days ‘full on’ bowling, drinking, partying, eating, more drinking, fund raising and even more drinking. We had played three league games; hosted the 4 Nations; played against two invited sides; had two club competitions and had a fund raising day.
Thanks must go to all those who played in the various games; to the players from other clubs who supported us; to the ladies who helped out in the background throughout the ten days. Without their efforts none of these things would happen. Also thanks go to the staff at the El Rincon for their help during the week. Time for a rest. Dave Melville Match Secretary May 2015

Gran Alacant performers Mary, the owner and regular advertiser from Ocean Bar, sent us this article.
Bernie Bates has been a regular highlight at karaoke nights along the Carabassi Strip on Avenida Noruega since he and his wife, Pauline, bought their holiday dream home in Novamar II in 2001. Originally from Manchester, Bernie had a very successful career in the music industry throughout the nineteen sixties and seventies singing in the popular five-piece band, The Statesmen. The band began by working the Manchester club scene headlining at all of the top venues on the circuit. Soon they came to the attention of Beatles manager Brian Epstein who invited them to play in the historic Cavern club in Liverpool, sharing billing with the relatively unknown fab four. This became a regular venue for the band who went on to headline in venues around the UK and Europe. It was through Epstein that the band secured three residencies throughout 1961 and 1962 in the now famous Star Club in Hamburg where they played alongside American acts such as Little Richard, Bill Haley and the Comets, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Brenda Lee and Liverpool acts Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers, Tony Sheridan, King Size Taylor and the Dominoes and of course The Beatles. Although he only performs now for fun or at regular charity events in Ireland (where he and Pauline have been based since 1977) and Spain, Bernie recently entered a local singing competition and won. At the age of 72, Bernie fought off stiff competition from talented field of local singers to become The Voice of Tallaght. Bernie and Pauline love their little piece of paradise in Gran Alacant and will be here throughout June and September of this year. Check out the Karaoke nights along the Carabassi strip. You’re sure to see Bernie do what he does best‌

Gran Alacant rk Dog Pa
The long awaited Gran Alacant Dog Park finally opened to the public last week. This project was the result of the hard work of the Asociacion de Propietarios de Mascotas de Santa Pola y Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) which turned one year old in May. We are now approaching 100 members! Thanks to the strong support of Santa Pola town hall, especially our councilor Loreto Cascales, the residents of Gran Alacant now have a safe place to take their dogs to socialize and exercise off leash. ASPETGA is planning a party for June to celebrate the opening of the park. Finally ASPETGA reminds all dog owners that within Santa Pola town limits they are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs whether it is on the street, in the campo or in the dog park.

PET INSURANCES
This month we are writing about a matter we think it’s quite important: pet insurances. There are different kinds of pet insurances: -Mandatory ones for potentially dangerous dogs. -Health insurances. -Civil liability insurances. The first ones are very well known for most dog owners. They are mandatory for every dog belonging to one of the potentially dangerous dog breeds. They will cover eventual personal damages these dogs may cause. Health insurances pay one part of the bill of the Vet if the dog requires medical attention. The percentage of the bill the insurance is going to cover may vary between the companies. Normally special diets, chronic diseases or vaccinations are not included. They usually cover diagnostic and treatment of accidents and “unexpected” diseases. There are remarkable differences between companies. According to this, we have different options: -Depending on the company we can choose the Vet we prefer, or we have to go to an “authorized by the company” Vet. In this case, if we choose a different Vet, the company won’t pay. -In some companies, the cost of the insurance may vary depending on the age and size of the dog; in some other ones, the cost is the same in every case, no matter how old or big the dog is. -Some insurances will also pay for hospitalization (or kennel if the owner is unable to keep the animal at home during the disease), and some other ones will only pay the Vet bill. -Some of them also include cremation, compensation for theft, etc.
Normally, a claim works like the following: the Vet treats the animal, the owner pays the bill, and the Vet provides the owner a report for the company. They will study the case and decide how much of the bill are they going to pay. Of course, the dog must be chipped and have a valid rabies vaccination. There are also specific insurances for horses and exotic birds. In our opinion, pet’s health insurance is not very useful for a “normal” companion pet, but we consider it may be interesting for those ones whose owners travel very frequently. These animals spend long periods of time at kennels, sharing their time with other dogs, so they are more exposed to risky situations. We consider civil liability insurance is very useful in every case. This is the one that covers every kind of damage our pet may cause (of course, we are talking of non-potentially dangerous dogs. In case of a dangerous one this precaution must be taken by law), such as damaging urban furniture accidentally, causing a car accident, damaging our neighbor’s house, etc. Sometimes it looks like the Vet bill may be expensive, but it is really cheap if compared with repairing a fence, body and paint workshop bill, compensating a bicycle rider with several fractures, etc. For this reason, we recommend to have a civil liability insurance for every dog. In most cases, if the owner has a home insurance previously, the pet can be included in it paying a small quantity of money (or even paying nothing at all), so, it’s a good idea to ask the company of our home insurance if they also include pets. Of course, it’s important to go to a trustful company and read carefully all the conditions (for example, if the dog is going to be covered only if it’s on the lead ad with a muzzle on, that insurance won’t be very useful).

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Regular readers of this column might be somewhat disappointed to see from my photo that this month I am going to talk about a rather insignificant little brown bird. Who wants to read about yet another member of the Little Brown Job (LBJ to us birders) brigade when here in Spain we have some of the most spectacular birds to be found in the whole of Europe?
I mean, look at it. It is about the size of a Robin, skulks about in the undergrowth, and even keen birders will struggle to get a good view of it. It's only here in the summer, you won't find one hopping about your front patio, and there are many more colourful birds to admire. So you probably won't believe me when I tell you that this is one of the most famous birds in Europe, thanks to a very misleading popular song which was written in 1939 and became part of the soundtrack to the Second World War. This is a Nightingale (Ruiseñor común in Spanish) and last month there were at least two male birds in the Clot, doing exactly what they are known for. The song of this otherwise unremarkable bird is justly famous for its volume, range of rich tones, variety and depth, and can even be heard in the middle of the night – hence its name. Studies have shown that individual birds may have a repertoire of over 200 different phrases. This is the song which has inspired poets, writers and musicians throughout Europe, and yet is one of the least-well known of our common birds due to its otherwise reclusive habits.
They nest in deep dense cover, preferring scrub and low trees where they feed on insects and small grubs. Once the male bird has found a female to breed with, the intensity of their song will decrease somewhat, but they can still be heard until mid summer. Here in Spain they are relatively common, but back in the UK they are at the northern edge of their breeding range, and only about 6,000 birds inhabit the south-east of the country, where they are in decline due to habitat loss.
Back to the well-known song - “A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square” - oh no it didn't! The author of the short story which inspired the song lyrics, one Michael Arlen, probably heard a Blackbird, whose song is pleasant but nothing like as varied and powerful as the voice of the Nightingale, and the latter wouldn't be seen anywhere near a city square. It would be like saying that Boy George can sing better than Pavarotti.
You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
