Hello everyone,

Our front cover picture for our June edition is of a vibrant sunset from “Clot de Galvany” Arenales del Sol (Elx) taken and supplied to us by M Luisa Sanchez Perez. See this has been the warmest April since 1927, global warming? Nice that summer started nice and early this year.

Nice to see the locals frequenting the bars for the football matches involving the big Spanish teams.

Pictures in this issue which we attended, at the Darts presentation night, at Mariatos Kitchen IV. Over 100 guests made it a very memorable evening.

The advert on pages 22 and 23 IS meant to be upside down. Not Barry having a senior moment.

Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 60 in the parade.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Hi Barry, This year there has been a number of firebombing incidents in Avda Polonia. In January there were several incidents on one night - at least 3 gardens set alight (inc my own causing about 250 euros of damage) & a rubbish bin. Thankfully the Police attended promptly & extinguished the fires quickly. In my case they prevented the fire reaching our gas supply pipe! This incident took place around midnight on Saturday night & it would seem the firesetter was moving along Polonia from the bar area going west. On 27th April at around midnight, there was a further incident when a motorcycle was set alight inside the entrance to Monte y Mar phase 4, Avda Polonia. This caused a spectacular blaze, but thanks to quick response from neighbours & the police, the fire was extinguished, but not before the bike was written off completely. Fortunately, the fire did not reach the petrol tank! Again, the indication is that the culprit was somebody moving westward along Polonia from the bar area. This is a very worrying trend. The culprit apparently uses an accelerant & does not care how serious the outcome could be. In your conversations with Loreto would it be possible to find out if the Police have any plans to deal with this problem? For example, increased patrols around the area around midnight might be a disincentive to the culprit(s). Thanks - Chris & Penny Rooke Loreto tells us that the local police/guardia civil, are always patrolling around GA. ---------------Dear Barry and Sandra It was suggested we try telling you about our problem accessing the Clot while on holiday in case you are able to ask Loreta if she can help at all. At the entrance there are three large six foot posts barring access to any disabled person in a wheelchair or mobility scooter. My husband is a permanent wheelchair user and we borrowed a mobility scooter to get around while out on holiday and were really disappointed not to be able to do some birdwatching and photography in the Clot, something that means a lot to my husband as other activities are impossible for him. We met other disabled people while out there who were residents and also using the same mode of transport who, obviously, would not be able to gain access either. Can anything be done about this restriction in access which I am sure will disappoint many others in the future.

Many Thanks Hazel Lowdon We have taken the pictures shown. There is access from the picnic area for wheelchair users. -------Much work taking place at the Gran Alacant Comercial Centre during the month of May. The new petrol pumps are coming along nicely and workmen were busy pedestrianising the road that runs along outside Mercadona. (pictures below).

-----------Congratulations to Elche football club in securing a point in a 0-0 home draw against Barcelona, which keeps them in La Liga for next season. ------------Dear Sandra & Barry Would like to know whether there will be a map of the new track across the sierra to Santa Pola hope you enjoyed the uk. All the best Sheila Mitchell We have asked for a map to be emailed to us. We will print this when it arrives. -----------If you want to dump big size rubbish and do not have a car to take it to the municipal tip near to the lighthouse, urbaser will collect it from your house and take it for you. ---------------------There are NO PLANS for a cremtorium on Gran Alacant. A small chapel is planned where people can go to show respects for their loved ones. ----------------------My friend, who owns a property in altomar two, had reason to challenge a lady who was allowing her dog to defecate on the pavement. The request for the dog mess to be picked up was not received favourably and a torrent of unwarranted verbal abuse was directed at my friend which in itself was quite unnerving. However, the dog owner, under protest, finally and reluctantly complied with the request to clean up after her dog. Later that evening a note appeared on the car windscreen of my friends car and it said " what do you think you are for tell me that. I know that I do I'm not a pig. You are very badly educated." This attitude seems to be prevalent with a minority of people within the area, who seemingly are determined to flout the communities rules on dog fouling, and have no regard for the health issues surrounding this unacceptable practise. Additionally, surely, whatever nationality we all have a responsibility to each other to ensure that where we live is kept to a standard that we can all enjoy? Yours sincerely A resident of Altomar two . -------------------The new market site will open towards the end of June. A report here from Loreto.

I regret to hear some comments in a too-ironic tone, and even, in some cases, touching the insult on the next opening of the market in Gran Alacant. When one is your Town Council, or at least when it is a Councillor as I want his people, my only goal is to try, within my possibilities, to offer the best to my fellow citizens. I am a human being and, obviously, like everyone else, then I could be wrong. But, on this occasion, I am absolutely convinced that the decisions I have taken are appropriate. The works of the market have been very complicated work, unfortunately much more than I would have liked: with stoppages, renegotiations with the company, restructuring of the project integer... and it is true that has been delayed too. For this reason, I recognize here publicly that I've been the one who has taken decisions. Certainly we could have received the work a long time ago but not in the right conditions for its use. It could have been good politically with the population of Gran Alacant, but the work had not been as I wanted it and subsequentarrangement of faults would have had to be paid by all the santapoleros out of our pockets. Conversely, I decided at the time, but I risked to receive much criticism for the delay of the completion of the market, I knew that my neighbors would not have to pay for something that should not be correct. And I have done so. I have no regrets and would do so if the

10

circumstances were the same. And I will continue holding the downpour of criticism because my conscience tells me that I have done what I had to do. Sometimes, many things are not what they seem and we speak without knowledge of the facts. I would loved to have the market ready much sooner, but have had problems with the company, having to discuss in endless meetings and fight for the best conditions for the market of my people, nor having to wait that long to have everything as I wanted to... but sometimes things are not always as one would like. I want to clarify that, in addition, no official date never before had been running Gran Alacant new market and that is something very different from what the rumours in the area have commented on other possible dates. I would like to end by saying that even if the market is working perfectly today, our trade Councillor has already announced that during the month of June we have excellent facilities that our neighbours in Gran Alacant have been demanding for many years and, finally, will become a reality through the efforts of many people. More news next month. Sandra and Barry

WHAT'S THAT FLOWER ? The Wild Flowers of Santa Pola/Gran Alacant by Rose Jackson

VIPER'S BUGLOSS, Echium vulgare A medium/tall plant of dry, sandy places and waysides. Bristley to the touch it has brilliant blue funnel-shaped flowers, rose cloured on first opening, and red stamens that flick like a tongue. It's name is due to the fact that it was once used, distilled, as a remedy for viper, or snake bite ! The name Bugloss is of Greek origin, meaning ox's tongue and applied for the roughness and shape of the leaves. It's medicinal properties today derive from the seeds, which contain an oil rich in fatty acids. There is a similar, smaller plant called, predictably, Small Bugloss, Lycopsis arvensis.

On the 12th and 19th May, we had our Annual Friendship Shield match against La Marina. The match is played over 2 Legs Home and Away with lunch after the matches. The match is 6 Trips decided on Shots only, on the 12th we were Away losing by 28 Shots, in the return on the 19th May at our place we done slightly better only Losing by 18 Shots, giving La Marina the Trophy by 46 Shots. I am certain that over the 9 years that this has been played we have won this Shield only once. Because the old Shield has no more spaces on it a new Shield will be bought for next years match, hopefully the new one will not have the jinx that this one

The fountain on the Gran Alacant roundabout IS WORKING and HOPEFULLY will continue to do so after a major overhaul of the pumping system. We had a power cut at our house this morning and my PC, laptop, TV, DVD, iPad, cordless phones & my new surround sound music system were all shut down. Then I discovered that my iPhone battery was flat and to top it off it was raining outside, so I couldn't play golf. I went into the kitchen to make coffee and then I remembered that this also needs power, so I sat and talked with my wife for a while. She seems like a nice person

One thing often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola on google, rang them up and booked onto their famous Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine Reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the dive centre 10 minutes away. We had a fantastic trip and when we sat down for Tea, Coffee or Beers afterwards they told me I could actually go scuba diving!! I thought it was only the Jacques Cousteau’s and professionals that could do it. We booked to do the Discover Scuba Diving course designed to teach you step by step and although I was nervous to begin with the instructor was very professional and we

ended up having a lot of fun. It wasn’t as scary as first thought and we got photos to prove we did it! We travelled in the dive van to the site and then started with a theory lesson. Then we entered the water from the beach so it was nice and shallow and we completed some exercises designed to put you at ease. Then we went for our first dive in shallow water but later after a break for lunch we got to go back in and try a little deeper. This was the best one as I was so relaxed by then and we saw loads of fish and Octopus. We are all going to book for our Open water Diver licences and we get 10% off future courses and dive kit too. Dive Academy run these courses every day of the year what-ever the weather and my son wants to become an instructor now so he is working towards his Instructor Development Course in November 2013. You only have to book one day before and there is lots of information on the website and facebook. Tel: 966699088 or 648463310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

We were back in the UK last month in our home area of Norfolk. It was just the right time to see our daughter Joanne competing with over 2,000 other runners in the 10km run at Kings Lynn Norfolk.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

Regular visitors to the Clot will be aware that a lot of work has been done over the past year or so, involving the clearance of old reedbeds and scrub, and the improvement of the water supply. Hopefully the times when even most of the main pool was reduced to a dry mudflat are long gone, and we can enjoy all the birds and animals that a well-managed environment will support. It may surprise you to know that, left to itself, nature will not always provide the best possible conditions for a wide variety of wildlife, and the pioneering work by such organisations as the RSPB has shown what can be done. Over the past few months all this work has begun to produce results, with some very interesting newcomers and some welcome returnees to the area. For example, we have seen many of the heron species taking up residence, such as the Purple Heron, Night Heron and Little Bittern, but this month I want to look at a rather insignificant little bird which has begun to breed at the main pool in the Clot for the first time in several years. It is called the Great Reed Warbler (in Spanish, Carricero tordal) and as you can see from my picture is a dull brown-grey bird about the size of a thrush. Here it is skulking in the reeds, and being generally unobtrusive. You may think that it is a bit pointless to talk about such a retiring bird which you can hardly see, but believe you me, you will know when one is about. The Great Reed Warbler has one of the loudest and most distinctive songs of all the reed dwelling birds, very gruff and squeaky, and (very roughly) goes “Karrakarra-chook-tweet-tweet-whistle-chirrup” or variations thereof. It carries a long way, and you will get the shock of your life if it opens up right beside you in the main hide! This bird is a summer visitor to our area, and is rare in the UK, so it is yet another of the targets for visiting British birders to the Costa Blanca. There seems to be only the one pair in the Clot at the moment, which is just as well because both the male and female birds are known – shall we say – to be a little free with their affections and menages a trois are not uncommon where there are many birds about. We must hope that our Great Reed Warbler pair don't become the subject of the local cuckoo's attentions, as they are a prime target for this parasitic bird, and several cuckoos have been seen around the Clot recently. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
