Hello everyone

For holiday makers the map of Gran Alacant at the back of our magazine will help you to find our advertises on the Urbanisation.

We are often asked by former advertisers, if they could still have a delivery of our magazine. When we deliver our magazines, we always give priority to the businesses that advertise with us. As new advertisers come in, they have the magazines delivered to them. We have to do this, otherwise if we delivered to all new advertisers and all those that have stopped their advert, we would have to print more and more and more magazines every month, putting up our advert costs. Readers often contact us to ask if a business has shut down, when they no longer see their advert in the magazine.

Remember that we always have three special outlets where we top up during the month so you can always find a copy. (EURONICS, PHOENIX, QUICKSAVE)

Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was at the Phoenix anniversary.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Hi both,

Name and address supplied .I contacted you last year re:waste not put in bins. Now, today I witnessed 2 Gypsies get out of a dark grey Ford van (vehicle number plate supplied) and proceed to tear open all the carefully tied black sacks and shake out the contents before taking what they were looking for. Why do we bother?

We have given Loreto the car number. She phoned the police who are starting to give out warnings to cars/vans rifling through our bins.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi! First I want to thank you for your very interesting publication. Lot of the information is really good.

During a long period now, I have been passing the coming market place on the Avda Escandinavia and to my big surprise I have since some weeks noticed that mostly all of the new planted palm trees seem to be dead and that very soon after they have been planted!! I have never noticed that someone has given the palm any water, and do not think that these rainy days was planned to be enough – we do not think it will help!! It is a very sad situation that tax money is used for a good purpose and then the result will be totally spoiled. I hope that Loreto Cascales will be informed by you, so it can be possible to perhaps save the palms trees - at least some of them. Best Regards, Nils

Money was donated by someone to have these trees planted and when Loreto saw the state of them she was very annoyed and phoned the person in charge and it was explained to her that they had been watered but out here trees very often flag for a while due to the stress suffered by trees when they have been moved from their original location and they take time to respond to their new siting. Always, due to this fact, a few trees very often do not survive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Barry & Sandra

I couldn't believe how bad the weeds were on the streets when we were out in GA last week. MASA are building again just at the end of our road and creating more of a concrete jungle without looking after what is already there. Surely they can be made to finish off the areas with nice trees/planting etc before they construct more concrete blocks!

4

Do you know if this is being considered by them or raised as an issue? The area at the top of the hill could look so well with a little thought & effort, just like the areas at the bottom of the hill with their mature planting, but it seems like the will is just not there to get anything nice done with this area Also the post boxes for our area 3.2f are a disgrace. Again would you know if there is anything going to be done about them?

Sorry for all the negativity but as I don't live there permanently just yet I only get to see the issues when we are out on our visits Could you raise both these issues with the local councillor at your next meeting

Keep up the brilliant work . . you provide a great service with the GA Advertiser Best regards

Fiona

We showed Loreto the mail, but of course, many of these concerns fall outside the responsibility of the Town Hall and must be taken up with the residents President. Fiona has since done this, and the president is looking into the problems raised.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The subject of the church has been brought up again. The Town Hall have offered the land and it is now up to the church to come up with the money for the build. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The association ASVEGA has donated some monies for tree planting. More trees will be sited at the new market place, the area near the new allotments, and on the area by the Carabasi bars where the new paving has recently taken place. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Yet again we had to bring up the subject of the fountain on the roundabout not working. Would you belive the pump has exploded and the Town Hall are sourcing a new pump. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Market. Hopefully by the time you read this, it may be nearly completed. The firm who were making the gates, phoned the Town Hall and informed them that they could not now take on the task. So, a new company had to be found to start again. Also Iberdrola were not completely happy with the work done, changes and new paperwork had to be submitted!!!!!!!!!!!

AGAIN we have to say that the Santa Pola market IS NOT being moved to Gran Alacant. When!!!!!!!!! the market is complete, discussion will take place about how often the site will be in use.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you have any urgent problem on GA concerning, being robbed, or indeed need the police immediately, phone 96 541 11 03 which will put you through to the police station in Santa Pola, where they will contact the police car on Gran Alacant to get to you quickly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------An email below from Jan Wright of M.A.B.S. MABS Walk for Life on 28th April 2013. Well what a wet morning, and did it rain? Oh Yes!!! Just as I remember in

5

Lynne from Lyneli hairdressers wins the costume of the day.

England when I used to arrange events, always worried about being rained off, but no not here in Spain! This is one event I could not cancel as, being English, we do turn up in the rain and walk. When we say we will do a Walk for Cancer we turn up. It did actually stop for half an hour. Thank goodness we were there sitting under a large ‘sun’ umbrella, I forgot the base so we held it up by piling rocks around the pole. Amazingly 25 people turned up to walk and support us, and we cannot thank you all enough for turning up in that weather all dressed up as well and looking great in Pink. Lynne from Lyneli Hairdressers won the bottle of Champagne for Best Dressed in Pink. We raised a staggering amount of 1,250euros which includes donations from people who could not walk and there is more promised. This is a marvellous result under the circumstances. Also thanks to Loreto who arranged for the Police to be present, they could not believe it went ahead. Loreto was well dressed in 3 layers of clothes and sheltering under a large umbrella. Thank you to all our supporters, and everyone who helped us to raise so much money and advertise this event, we are so grateful. Jan Wright and Angela Knapman.

We at the magazine were back for a few days in the UK whilst this event took place. We thank Stefan who was there on our behalf taking photos, his pictures have a

6

red border. Those sent to us by MABS have a blue border.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The bench that we would like to donate in view of our 100th edition, is being costed and should be sited soon. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------There are still people throwing down loads and loads of garden rubbish around the bin areas. Prunings etc should be cut up into small pieces and put in a bag before going into the bin. OR take them to the rufuse tip at the top of the Urbanisation just before the lighthouse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Building work is still happening at a brisk pace in different areas of Gran Alacant. This picture shows a part of the large new development on the steep hillside of the road down to the beach. ---------------------

No funciona.

A friend once complained to my sister about the difficulties contained in child rearing, especially the lack of peace and quiet rest. "What you need is a playpen to separate the kids from yourself," my sister suggested. So my sister's friend bought a playpen. A few days later, my sister called to ask how things were going. "Superb! I can't believe it," she replied. "I get in the pen with a good book and the kids don't bother me one bit!"

A recipe from

Sandra’s Cookbook

which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)

This month decided not to do a recipe but to offer a piece on baking in general and the difficulties encountered here.

Baking in Spain can be a bit of a challenge at first. Getting to grips with a new kitchen, let alone a new oven can be bad enough, team that with unfamiliar ingredients and it can be a lot to cope with!

It is worth noting that depending on your electricity supply, the rating of the house (ask someone who knows about electricity, I only use the stuff) and your oven, that your oven may not be as hot as the one you are used to. Certainly, when we moved here, I remember we had Barry and Sandra to dinner. It was later than planned because the roast potatoes took about 2 hours! That was the end of that oven, it was rapidly replaced.

Regarding baking, flour sold here is not labelled in the same way as in the UK. 'Harina de Trigo' is simply wheat flour. I find these days that the cheapest reliable one is 45c in Lidl, next to the eggs. This is suitable for pastry or bread and cake recipes that have a raising agent added. For SR flour, look for Harina for Bizcocho. The one in Mercadona is fine but it has a lot of raising agent so in some recipes I use a bit of the plain flour to dull it down a bit. Salt - watch out. The salt here tends not to be very fine. That's ok on dinner, not so good if it ends up in crystals in your baking. Make sure to buy a fine one or to dissolve it in the liquid you use in your recipe. Butter. If you buy unsalted butter for baking, do not forget to add some salt to your recipe. It is amazing what a difference it makes if it is left out. Scones are horrible without it. Recipes on my website stipulate which type to use but if you have to use unsalted when it is not called for, add 1/2 tsp salt per 250g butter. Buttermilk - you can put 1 tbsp of lemon juice in a cup and top up with normal milk. Stir and leave for 5 minutes to thicken.

Sugar - I use the standard white ones. If you want a good substitute for a brown sugar - add 3 tbsp of molasses or treacle to one cup of white sugar and mix well. If you only want light brown sugar, use only 1 1/2 tbsp of molasses. You can find that in the jam isle of Mercadona, in a glass jar. I go through vanilla like others go through vodka. So I make my own by steeping vanilla pods (from ebay) in vodka from Aldi. Just split the pods and add a load to the bottle. Leave for at least 6 weeks.

Yeast. I do a lot of bread making, so I buy 250g packs of instant yeast from tiny Morroccan shops in Crevillente at about â‚Ź2.50 a time. You can buy fresh yeast in Mercadona next to the butter. One of those little blocks is enough for 500g of flour and costs around 35c. It is a myth that you have to activate it. You don't. Just crumble it into the flour and off you go. Don't let it touch the salt though. Buy fresh yeast as needed, it does not keep well unless you freeze it - which kind of defeats the object! Ok, so that's a few words of my limited wisdom. If you have any particular baking problems, I'm sure Barry and Sandra will be happy to forward them to me and I'll do my best to answer. Happy Baking Sandra

The cost for Rebosy ranges from 75 to 160 euro and in most cases it is a once in a lifetime treatment.

We do all kinds of pain treatments and prescriptions. Normal consultation from 30 euro.

The treatment is painless and lasts for one to two hours and you will be asked your opinion after the treatment. It is successful in 9 out of 10 cases and your physical problems may disappear immediately after being treated!

During the treatment you will simply lie on a couch and relax while the doctor carries out the treatment. The treatment consists of ReBoSy by AA (Restoring Body Symmetry by Advanced Acupuncture) using very fine needles and infrared light, among other things.

Using a level measure for ReBoSy (Restoring Body Symmetry) you can see the difference - before and after treatment.

A small deviation in the level of your pelvis - which you may never have noticed - could give you back or neck problems or even headaches. Because of this you may end up as a patient who has to endure many different medical treatments.

Without knowing it, many of us suffer from instability in the Pelvis which can lead to unequal leg length resulting in a small deviation (Scoliosis) in the column.

New treatment - unknown in U.K. - for lower back pain, headache, migraine, muscular tension, muscular pain(including Lumbar pain) and many more.

WHAT IS NEW IN ALLERGIES DIAGNOSIS?

BREAKING NEWS: POISONED BAITS IN GRAN ALACANT (still to be confirmed) Last week, a female Yorkshire Terrier died showing the following symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea, shaking and foaming, and two more Yorkies belonging to the same owner, showed similar symptoms, but we were able to save their lives. The body of the dog that died was taken by the Valencian Department of Agriculture in order to necropsy it. The poison expert of the official lab found in the intestine lumen traces of small black balls that looked like aldicarb, a powerful insecticide that is commonly (and illegally) used in game preserves for getting rid of wild foxes, but several chemical tests have already to be done in order to confirm 100% sure if the black balls are really aldicarb. We will show the results next month. Published with permission. …and now for this month article:

WHAT IS NEW IN ALLERGIES DIAGNOSIS?

One of the most common reasons for coming to the Vet practice is “my dog is scratching”. It may also happen in cats, but less often. Itching problems in dogs are really difficult to treat, and we know it may be a source of frustration and “anger” against the Vet. There are 3 factors which complicate pruritic clinical cases in animals: -1) It normally takes a long time to have a definitive diagnosis. It may take even weeks to have the results of some tests, and the results of antiparasitic treatments or hypoallergenic diets in many cases are not visible until 6-8 weeks after the owner starts with them. During this time, the dog keeps scratching, and it looks like nothing has been done. Of course, everybody should understand that it’s practically impossible to stop in 24 hours an itching problem that is been lasting for months or even years. -2) Diagnostic tests are expensive, and besides, we cannot know at the beginning of the process how many of them will be necessary. If the problem is just a flea bite allergy, the diagnosis is quick, easy and cheap (despite finding the right anti-flea treatment may sometimes be hard and expensive); but in some other cases it may be really slow and difficult, because we have to make sure first if there is a hormonal problem (thyroid or adrenal glands), an infectious problem (bacteria or fungi), etc. After that, some skin biopsies, allergic tests and hypoallergenic diets may be required. -3) Sometimes itching cannot be cured definitively. If our dog or cat has an alimentary allergy an special (and expensive) hypoallergenic diet will be required for life. If the animal has a sensitivity against flea bite, the anti-flea prevention will have to be very strict all year round. If the animal is atopic, there are some possibilities of definitive healing by using a desensibilization therapy (“self vaccine”), if nothing else fails. What we can normally expect from treating a pruritic patient is to keep the problem under control by using diets, special shampoos and antiparasitic treatments regularly, but normally, if the owner gives up taking all these measures, the problem will be back. Itching problems normally get worse and worse: at the beginning, the animal scratches about one month a year, normally in spring, but the following year the itching is a bit more intense and lasts for spring and summer. As time goes by, the animal scratches all year round, and there are some moments when the itching is even worse. Nowadays there are some very reliable lab tests available in order to detect the specific “allergic antibodies”, infections, hormonal problems, etc. There are very effective treatments, too, but even with all these new tools, treating a pruritic dog keeps being a real challenge for both Vet and owner. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

I am a recent convert to Blanco y Negro, which for those of you who haven't tried it yet, is a delicious ice-cold black coffee with a lump of ice cream in it. There seem to be as many varieties of it as there are cafes in Spain, so I haven't yet explored all the varieties which are on offer, but I intend to do my best each time I am in Spain. If you see a blanco y negro bird in Gran Alacant or in the Clot, is is probably a White Wagtail (confusingly, not actually white, but grey and white with black bits on it), there are lots of them about and can easily be distinguished by – as you might guess – their wagging tails. They are usually near water, even your local swimming pool, and very easy to see. I did an article on this bird a while ago.

We have a different blanco y negro bird in the Clot at the moment which is well worth looking out for. I had only ever seen one solitary female bird about five years ago and none since, but this year has seen an influx of these little black-and-white birds. It is the Pied Flycatcher (Papamoscas cerrojillo in Spanish) and it does exactly what it says on the tin – it is black and white (Pied) and it catches flies. I have seen them in trees at the main entrance to the Clot, around the main pool and also near the hide which overlooks the marshy area. My picture shows the very smart male bird, the female is a much duller , dark grey on the back with whitish underparts, but with long white flashes in the wings. They have the very distinctive habit of sitting on an exposed perch or railing, flying out to catch a fly and then returning to exactly the same spot. Now make sure the children are out of the room, because this bird has a naughty sex life. It is not unusual for the male to be a bigamist; once his first female has laid her eggs he will be off to find a second female, thus being a father to two separate broods, but in the best soap-opera fashion he is not always the actual father of one of the set of nestlings and might end up raising someone else's chicks. That's the price you pay for being fast and loose! There are quite a few of these birds in the UK, found in old oak woods and they need searching out, but this year they are right here on your doorstep! See you next month.
