Hello

So many good events take place in Santa Pola, which many of us are never aware of. We have taken on Daniela who is starting a Santa Pola section where she will be in touch with people in the know, to start providing us with information to keep our readers up to date with “what´s going on in Santa Pola”. Blossom on our front cover, photographed 19th February heralding spring and summer in the air. In excess of 10,000 reading about Gran Alacant in our magazine in January, with figures expected to increase greatly in the coming months. Be careful leaving your car unattended in Los Arenales, our car has been broken into twice just recently.

Have a good month Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 52.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! Grafiti has appeared on a Santa Pola hotel. It is the JM hotel on the Santa Pola turn off the N332. Just about every balcony and wall has been affected. Surely with the time all of the work took, someboby must have seen it. Unfortunately this is private property and therefore it is up to the new owner to secure the area.

The premises have been purchased by the new owner, who then applied for a change of business, which was subsequently turned down. There were rumours it was to be a brothel. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... Many of the plots on the Gran Alacant allotments are up for grabs again. Registration can be carried out at the GA Council offices. There are vacancies. Registration is invited from FEB 16 TO 16 OF MARCH There will then be a draw for successful applicants. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com.....

Our Town Hall have for many months been applying to the Valencian Government for money to repair ageing water and sewage pipes a short way up the coast road from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola. It has been causing very bad smells to residents in the area. This month news came from Valencia that the Government have allocated 2 million euro to solve the problem. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... You may have seen how successful the new skate park has been. Moves are afoot for the facilities to be used for the National skate board Championships. This could be yet another big sporting event to be held in the town. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... Substantial spraying has taken place against the awful processionary caterpillas that plague the area at this time of the year. Special consideration has been made near to childrens areas and our parks.

Church side of the road, where a rough pavement exists at the moment. Earth taken from the Church side of the road will be moved and levelled off so that the area can be planted. This will help to solve a bit of an eyesore as you drive along this long stretch of road. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... A rumour circulating that the new market stall plots prices are dearer than on the previous site, have been dispelled by Loreto. The rumour also has it that the prices were up because of the toilet block. This is untrue. The toilets are kept in order as extra work for the Town Hall cleaning department, at NO extra cost. As in previous winters, the numbers of stalls have been lower as stall holders do not want to be out in the cold and the rain, in the same way that customers also tend to stay away, and who can blame them throughout this cold spell. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com... The top floor balcony of a building in Playa Lisa collapsed due to structural

.....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... It was reported to us that a stop sign had been knocked down, maybe causing future accidents. Loreto phoned the appropriate department to get the sign back in place. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... The new local Church on Gran Alacant has been a big help to children in the area who wish to go to communion. Instead of having to travel to Santa Pola, they can now instead use the GA Church on Sundays at 11am before the main service begins. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... Lola Gadea, went to the scene to check the status of housing and clarify the cause According to Gadea, the building had been built more than 40 years ago. It was built in the 60s. Thankfully nobody was hurt. .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... .....www.granalacantadvertiser.com..... The area for dogs that has been asked for by local people is now under construction and SHOULD be completed within a month. Fences, trees, lights, benches and a training area will all materialise. ASPETGA. are very excited to see the project progress from the dream to reality. We are grateful for the continued support of Santa Pola town hall who helped to make this dog park happen. Pic

The company Materials Cano S.L. has donated to the Town of Santa Pola a forklift. Loreto Serrano, Councillor for Infrastructure welcomed the donation: "It's a great addition to our catalogue of materials, given that many of the actions that we perform, require moving pallets around. And with this new truck we can be more effective. " It is a gift and therefore, at no cost to the Town. The forklift is ten years old and, according to company sources "works perfectly". This new machine is already painted and screen printed and ready to begin its function.

Alfie, Jessy and all the pointer pups from last month’s edition have all been adopted. Bella was living on the streets for 6 months and we tried desperately to catch her but she was just too afraid, thankfully from perseverance and lots of wonderful people helping we managed to catch her. Bella is around 2 years old and has been to the vets for a complete health check and was sterilised, the vet discovered she is blind in one eye but it doesn’t bother her. She is now in a foster home with another dog and cat and unbelievably she is so affectionate and just wants to be loved. Call: 645 469 253 Chloe is an adorable tiny Pincher cross and was found emaciated and covered in ticks and fleas. She is around 3 years old and is now being treated for Leishmaniasis but is a very low level. She is good with other dogs and cats and will make a wonderful lap dog. Call: 645 469 253

NEW PET PASSPORT REGULATIONS

We have a new regulation for Pet Passports (including new Pet Passports) since last 29-12-14. Fortunately, “old” passports keep valid, so there is no need to change them. This new regulation has come from EU, so it’s been applied at the same time at every EU country. New passports are stricter with animal, owner and Vet details than old ones. We have seen several times at our practice some Pet Passports not 100% correctly filled in, for example, no owner’s name, no microchipping date, etc. Those passports must be corrected or substituted by a new one. Otherwise, they won’t be accepted for crossing the border. What are the differences between old and new passports? -In order to avoid malicious “details rectifications”, a transparent sticker will be put for covering animal, Vet and owner details, and rabies injections. -Rabies vaccination date: now there are 3 different dates to fill in: a) date given; b) valid from; c) valid until. “Valid from” is the moment when the animal is ready to cross the border, that is, normally, 21 days after the first rabies injection. So, let’s see a practical example: -Date given: 02-01-15 - Valid from: 23-01-15 - Valid until: 02-01-16 The following year, it would be like the following: -Date given: 02-01-16 - Valid from: 02-01-16 - Valid until: 02-01-17 Because, if you don’t let the rabies injection expire, you only need to respect the 21 days period the first year. -Every time the Vet stamps the passport after a rabies injection, it may appear in it: name, address, telephone number, College number and signature (don’t worry, we have brand new stamps since last Christmas). This means rabies injections with just the sticker and the date given at the passport and nothing else (no Vet legal stamp, signature nor College number), are not valid in any way. -Tapeworm treatment certificate is only mandatory for dogs, no longer for cats. The treatment is valid for 5 days, same as before. Not every EU country asks for it, but UK does. -Health certificate (“clinical examination”) is now mandatory only in some cases: for example in case of an animal younger than 3 months with no rabies injection which is travelling for NON commercial reasons. In case Clinical Examination is filled in, the Vet must also fill in an Official Veterinary Certificate, which implies an extra cost. -Rabies antibodies test is only mandatory for animals that come from certain non-EU countries (or that are going to re-entry the EU after travelling to one of those non-EU countries). In this case, the most logical option is to contact the Vet for extra info. -As written previously, rabies vaccine is valid (when we say “valid” we are meaning “valid for crossing the border”) 21 days after being given if it is the first time, or if the previous injection is expired. If it is not the first time and it’s given before the previous one expires (normally it takes 1 year to expire), the vaccine is valid immediately. We have been confirmed by DEFRA via email that all these new procedures are correct the way we are describing them, but anyway we have been recommended to tell the owner to contact in advance with the transporter in case any extra requirement is applicable. So now, with the new regulation, things remain practically the same for dogs, and much easier for cats, since they don’t need any tapeworm treatment and 5 days period to respect. Since you can read at some sections of the Passports “may be required by territories or third countries of destination which accept the passport” or “required before movement into certain Member States in accordance with EU health legislation”, every owner who wish to travel abroad with pets should contact first transporter and Vet.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

Hip hip hooray and whoop-de-doo, it’s Spring again – and a whole month earlier than back in good old Blighty. Everything that happens during a British Spring can be seen here during March (except perhaps for strange people dancing round a maypole) and this is a good time to watch out for those early returning migrants – unless of course the weather forgets to look at the calendar and it turns horribly cold. Not only that, but there have been some interesting developments in the Clot during February, with work being done to clear the “scrape” which had become badly overgrown during the past twelve months. It’s the area next to the main pool with the bird observatory overlooking it; for the past year all you could see out of it were thick reedbeds and not much else. It may look a bit drastic at the moment, but very soon there will be new growth and it will become very attractive to the birds.

Even in its present state it is a good place to watch for migrants, and here’s one that you generally only see in our area during the Spring as it is passing through on its way to more northerly climes. This is the Northern Wheatear (Collalba gris in Spanish), usually known in the UK simply as Wheatear, but here in Spain it has cousins such as the Black-eared and Black Wheatear, so we need the full name to make clear which is which. There are always several of these birds passing through during March and April, and they do like open areas while they are hunting for food, so the cleared scrape will not only be an insect tuck shop for them over the next few weeks, but an easy place to spot these attractive little birds. It is always one of the first common spring migrants to appear in Britain, and Spain is a good stopover point to refresh and build up their strength after the long flight over the Sahara from their winter quarters in subtropical Africa.

My picture shows the male in all his breeding finery, the female is lightly duller. When they are on the ground, they usually hold a very upright stance in order to watch for any predators that may be about.

Strangely enough, the birds name has nothing to do with either wheat or ears. It is in fact a linguistic corruption of the word “white” and a slightly ruder English word which also means “bottom” (I’m sure you can work out what it is) and refers to the fact that as it flies away from you, you can easily see it has a white rear end.

You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
