Hello everyone,
Spring is in the air and it’s starting to warm up. Holiday makers in shorts and sparse tops, not for all of us locals yet, as it’s still end of February.
It is great to see more people about now, shame though that as that happens we see more garden rubbish left by the bins, Please remember that if people are seen leaving rubbish there that your whole community could be fined, bag small garden rubbish up and put it in the bins, otherwise there is a place on Gran Alacant to take larger garden or household items marked on the map in the magazine. Please try to help keep our lovely urbanisation tidy, don´t let small children take rubbish to the bins as they cannot reach, then the bags get left on the floor. Sitting here writing the introduction for this month reminded me that this time last month I (Sandra) ended up in hospital for the night, (a scare that ended ok), how time flies. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was by “whats this tree” on page 36.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! We start off with yet another problem dog owner Hello, I was on holiday in Gran Alicante 26-31st December 2013. I was walking home at 9pm in the evening (30/12) from the bus stop through Altomar I when I came across a man walking his Roteweiller and Alsatian on some waste ground opposite his house. The Rotweiller was muzzled and on a lead, but the Alsatian had neither and it attacked me in the street outside the mans house, ripped my jacket and jeans and bit me a number of times. I called the police who went to the house in question but did not enter it because the dogs were going wild. The man walking the dog apparently had left his wife or partner and run off so the police could not find him. (Although they did not enter the property to look for him - the dogs were too wild there was a woman who produced a dog license I believe) I had to go to the hospital for treatment then spend half the night in the police station doing a denuncia. I have subsequently written to the police to obtain information about the owner of the dog, but not had a response and its been over a month. Had it been a child, it would have had its face ripped off and possibly maimed for life or killed. I feel sorry for anyone who has to live there and put up with this dreadful state of affairs. I have attached a photo for you to see my wounds, and I am still scarred some 6 weeks after the event. The owner should be taken to court and the dog put down as its too dangerous to be on the streets. Regards address withheld by us ------------------------The future dog park in Gran Alacant. Last Sunday in what will be the future dog park on Gran Alacant a day of socializing and training dogs was attended by the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales. The purpose of this meeting was to teach owners how to treat canines and how to train them. To this end there were various activities that teach owners to walk their pets on a leash, to introduce them to other dogs. During the day one of the inherent problems and possession of a canine is to not pick up after their pets. To do this, there was an appeal to pet owners reminding them a civic duty as reinforcement to the " Pick it up " campaign advertised all over Gran Alacant. In fact, in order to get the proper cleaning of the area and support the campaign to collect droppings, the park will have a specific area where pets can defecate. GO TO PAGE 6

Hi everybody,
There is only one parade of Moors and Christians in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) 15th to 19th. If you do not want to go to the big fiesta in Valencia you can enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego.
Still some carnival parades left, if you really want to see something spectacular go to see one held in the village of Aguilas 2th to 8th March, a bit further down from Cartagena.
In Valencia takes place one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “las Fallas” the programme is too long but there are parades, main days 15th to the 19th , floral offerings, this event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers). This is all this month.

Packed with activities Loreto Cascales stated that, in addition to supporting the day, she wanted to "remind the citizens of Gran Alacant that they have a space for man's best friend: the Dog Park, which will be 2,000 square meters and will be located right here in the park adjacent to the gas station adjoining the national highway." For full opening they only need to include the costs involved in fenced area in the municipal budget for the current year. This is a petition by the residents of Gran Alacant which once again the Council has responded to. Similarly, the Session is open to any suggestions and activities to do in the future park demanding users. As Javier Baile Councilman Parks and Gardens, explains "A canicross is contemplated, games and installations from recycled materials where canines can make circuits and exercise." The history of this measure is found in the Parque de la Cruz, which also installed games with materials from the Ecopark. Together for dog training The event was attended by various associations and institutions such as Alicante Adopts the Humane Association of Alicante, Hearts of Gold as an association of assistance dogs for physically disabled people, Tierras del Segura as dog trainers and owners association Pet Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, who conducted a membership drive. In addition the event was canine psychologist Olga Bearded, who said that " the behavior problems of dogs are generally derived from the owners." ------------------------The bus station in Santa Pola The January plenary voted to award the construction of the future bus station company Bus Playa San Juan ( Vectalia ), which is the highest grade that has taken off in the adjudication process. Lola Gadea, Town Planning, has revealed the secrets of this highly anticipated project. "As the company this fiscal and economic guarantees, working begins, which we hope to start next spring." With these words the mayor announced the commitment of Santa Pola with the historical needs of the area. The period of execution of the work according to the specifications, will be fifteen months. Prior to the start of construction, Santa Pola will give the company the final guidelines. Something that will expedite this phase, according Gadea, is that " the winning company has extensive experience in management of passenger transport", by which the dialogue process will lighten . The preliminary draft has a reservation space of 680 square meters for the future TRAM. ------------------------------------------------------------Hello, The tree you show on page 36 of your last edition is a Papaya tree. A level of care, we have moved a total of 129,226 visits ( between Central Library, Gran Alacant and intantil ) in 2012 to 130,086 in 2013. In this respect especially notable increase in 4000 over the previous year visits by Children . Sempere wanted to affect the fact that it also has increased the number of active users, from 4755-5735," given that it is considered active from the time a user performs on the first loan year. For us this figure is very important, as it shows the increased loyalty of our service. " Here, the most significant increase was recorded in libraries Gran Alacant ( 1,902 in 2012 , 2,871 in 2013) and Child (from 803-846 ) . -------------------The organic garden (allotments) Plot number eleven Ecological Garden of Gran Alacant and has a new owner, Sergio Villena Moon. A draw for the vacant plot was held at the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall in which the candidates drew lots while Loreto Cascales, Gran Alacant Councillor, held the container with numbers. A total of 17 people aspired to keep the organic garden of 50 square meters. Each one of them was assigned a number and then, one by one, they were taking the ballots. The remaining 16 people make up a waiting list and will be called if and when another plot becomes available, said the mayor of Gran Alacant. Cascales urged applicants who had failed to obtain a plot not get discouraged, because "in the last four years we have had three draws, that is, it is something that is moving, which is dynamic." Villena Sergio showed his surprise and delight at being left with the organic garden: "It is the first time I have applied for it and I was not expecting new owner to win the draw.

WHAT'S THAT FLOWER ? The Wild Flowers of Santa Pola/Gran Alacant by Rose Jackson
March sees the flowering of many species on the rocky hillsides here - where
the vegetation is known as 'garigue' - a rich floral habitat.
WHITE ASPHODEL, Asphodelus alba. This plant is a striking and very visable
feature of the hillsides from mid-March. Its white flowers are born in a
tall spire, which branches halfway, the long, narrow leaves surrounding
the base. Hollow Stemmed Asphodel, Asphodelusfistulosus. A similar but smaller, multi-stemmed plant, flowering from February. The petals form
a star and have a brown stripe in the middle. Both are members of the lily family.
GLADIOLUS, Gladiolus illyricus. The bright pink flowers of the wild gladioli
can be seen 'off the beaten track' in the shelter of a rock or grass tussock; more delicate than the cultivated type, with 3-8 flowers rising on one side
of the stem and narrow, spikey leaves. I believe they were once much more common here but over-grazing by goats in the past and picking has led to a decline in this species. One or two can be seen on the hillside below the farmacia (where the new school is planned)!

PAUL CUNNINGHAM NURSES
Hi We received a donation from Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club for 200.00, I believe it was presented at their Annual Dinner Dance, Jan who received it on our behalf brought it into the office last Thursday. I just wanted to ask if you could include in your article about the event a really big thank you from PCN, without donations such as this we would be unable to carry on our Nursing in the Community. I have written to the Chairman and thanked him, explaining that we were unaware of the event, but if they wanted us to attend any future event to please contact me in the office.
Regards
Diane

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? -------------------Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized? -------------------Why do people keep running over a thread a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
While we are waiting for the arrival of summer visitors to our area (the sort that don’t arrive on the next Ryanair flight), let’s have another look at one Spanish bird which is with us all year round and very distinctive – here’s the Hoopoe, known in Spanish as Abubilla.
The Hoopoe can been seen in the Clot quite easily if you know where to look – the best place recently has been from the newer of the two hides near the Carabassi bars area which has been cleared of scrub and vegetation. Hoopoes like an area of open ground where they can dig into the soil in search of grubs and beetles, while keeping an eye out for predators. There is also a regular Hoopoe nesting site in one of the trees to the right of the main pool hide, and the birds can be seen flying over the water on their food delivery flights.
If the long-promised golf course ever materialises, and and the same time we also get an unexpected airborne pig sighting, the Hoopoe will thrive on the open greens. That curved bull is very powerful and can be opened even while deep in the ground, and fortunately for us the Hoopoe is also one of the few birds which will eat the dreaded processionary pine caterpillars
My picture is the nearest one I’ve got to the bird showing the full extent of the crest, it raises this only when alarmed or excited by something, and also strangely enough nearly every time it lands. Otherwise the usual view of the crest is a sharp projection at the back of its head, giving the bird an absolutely unmistakeable silhouette. Its flappy flight also makes you think you’re seeing some sort of enormous butterfly!
The name Hoopoe comes from its call, so if you’ve heard it you will wonder why the bird isn’t actually named the Hoopoepoe as more often than not it is a tri-syllabic call. It also has a harsh “kaaark” call which is often used in Hoopoe disagreements – these can occur quite frequently during the mating season when the birds are very territorial and quite fierce fights can break out. It is a rare bird back in the UK, but has been known to breed from time to time. There have been reports of one or two lurking in southern areas of England throughout this very mild (and wet!) winter, and of course any reported sightings are quickly followed up by crowds of twitchers eager to catch sight of this distinctive bird. You don’t need to worry about that here in Spain! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
