We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! PRESS RELEASE Urgent action cleaning droppings in Gran Alacant The Consistory of Santa Pola has heard, once again, the complaints received by local residents. This time, he has acted upon the urgent cleaning up of dog mess around the Vicenta College Russian School do to the fact that a large number of dogs are down in that area, "special protection is needed, since it is a school perimeter "according to the Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales. From the Town Hall, this situation moved to the street cleaning concessionaire and " hosing and has been used to clean up urgently." As an additional measure, Loreto Cascales explains that " she has reinforced housekeeping in the parking lot in front of the school and adjacent sidewalks." Thirdly, she has urged local police to increase its presence there "in order to punish those who violate the Ordinance Cleaning, since we can not allow an enclosure that is so busy, especially with children, to be in a state of dirt due to the lack of diligence of the pet owners,"said Loreto. The Mayor of Gran Alacant, is calling on citizens to remind them "the importance of caring and respecting public spaces, in this particular case, collecting the mess produced by pets ." --------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Barry and Sandra This photograph was taken in Avenida Escandinavia on the morning of Sunday 6 April. There is another pile on the other side of the bin. I feel it raises several questions, not least: 1) Where were these people dragged up? 2) Who do they think they are? 3) Do they think hard-working refuse collectors are their slaves? 4) Has the notion of recycling somehow passed them by? 5) Do they have any respect whatever for their environment, their neighbours or, indeed, anyone or anything? 6) Did they gravitate instinctively towards the gutter? Kind regards Name and address supplied

Also “Las Cruces de Mayo” Cross of May, Crosses made with flowers in la Cruz Street in Santa Pola and the most beautiful ones are shown in the old quarter of Alicante “Barrio la Cruz”

If you like sports, if you like Karate, you can attend to the competition held at the Fortress-Castle on the 30th and 31st. The Fortress becomes an open air gym. If you like martial arts you should not miss this event. That’s all for friends.

---------------------------------------------------------------------Hello I feel as I must once again raise the issue on dog mess. These are photographs of the market area pavement opposite Cocoas. (more than this one supplied). Is there no end to this behaviour. There has to be a sign fixed to the fence warning these people that it wont be stood for with a hefty fine. I wonder what holiday makers will think when they see all this mess on pavements. Only last week driving back from shopping I caught young girl standing watching her dog mess near the market area when I wound my window down and shouted at her to get it picked up she just walked away and it was left there obviously Spanish. I strongly believe that when the fences on the market are removed it will be used as a doggy toilet so who ever parks there car or walks round the market will be treading in this mess. If nothing is done about it now. regards Graham -------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Barry and Sandra, thanks again for a great mag! Is there any progress on the proposed improvement to the access to the N332? This seems to have been "pending" for almost as long as the golf course! Seriously, though, it's currently pretty inadequate and at times downright dangerous. Can any thing be done to expedite the upgrade? Regards Bert dove

Sorry, no end to the problem until the golf course construction starts.

--------------------------------------------------The smog that recently hit the UK came to us on GA in early April (picture right). There were some brilliant pictures on the internet and was quite a sight to us on GA. --------------------------------------------------All set on the beaches of Santa Pola for Holy Week

The beaches of Santa Pola were made ready to welcome its tourists, residents and visitors to enjoy the crystal clear water and great weather during the Holy Week, whose campaign ran from 12 to 21 April. This year the City worked hard for its 15 miles of coastline and 11 km of sandy beach. Beaches Councillor, Loreto Serrano, announced that " manual and mechanical cleaning of the beaches were fully operational and completed removal of the remains of wrack algae that has accumulated over the low season. It is important to remember the importance of sea grasses to prevent regression of the sand by the recent wind storms we've had. " The Mayor added that "Santa Pola is a pioneer in recycling algae that is used to regenerate the inert landfill. Furthermore, algae removal and screening has allowed us to reuse 2,500 cubic meters of sand for the beaches, as it is an increasingly scarce resource that we must conserve to the maximum . " As he explained Alberto Bleda, the concessionaire responsible for cleaning during the year has been leveling the sand that the wind builds up on the walls surrounding the beaches during the winter months. We are also looking to remove all the accumulated algae , about 3,500 m3 of which, after drying and screening we will have recovered

2,500 m3 of sand." We have already placed the bins on all the beaches, cleaning the graffiti, signs and marquees is scheduled during the Easter campaign conducting both manual and mechanical cleaning of the urban coast three times a week . The beaches of Gran Playa Levante have the aid and rescue service from 11 to 19 hours, enhanced surveillance, with 2 chairs nearby. Also, in the Levante the disabled enjoyed accessible point throughout Holy Week, from 11 to 17 hours continuously. Also the sunbeds and umbrellas were available from 10 am until seven pm. For lovers of water sports on the beach of La Gola they enjoyed various water sports at the school Parres Center, which was running from 10 to 18 hours. Also the City conditioned the boat ramp located at the beginning of Gran Playa, which was in perfect condition and accessibility and use. -------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Sandra & Barry, As always the April edition was a great read and informative. I was particularly interested in the article regarding the legal issue of parking of motor homes on open ground and on the vehicle park on the Carabasi. The vehicle park is obviously popular to motor home owners, particularly at this time of year. By my reckoning there is an average of 15 - 20 such vehicles daily incl night time! I think this be considered a positive thing rather than a negative, as popular means there is money to be made. I would not wish to see the vehicle park turned into a camp site but during the winter or spring months (perhaps 30 Oct - 30 Apr) a 24 hr charge could be imposed on such vehicles. How that could work I would leave up to the local authority, perhaps pay and display or internet payment with printed down load tickets. The monitoring of tickets could be done by the police as patrols pass the vehicle park many times a day. The police should not to turn into 'parking attendants' but this may be a possible short term solution until a trail period has been completed which would ascertain if the pay and park policy is worth full implementation. Funds generated may pay for the provision of domestic waste from the motor homes and in addition to profit provide a job to somebody! Nicholas Evans Altomar 2

but working throughout the year without a break with projects like this is so important to help the disadvantaged . " Elisabeth Jorro stated that "all the bears were sold in the day we did last month and we raised a total of 460 euros. We appreciate the great response from the people of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, the local media for their dissemination and the Gran Alacant Mall for allowing us the local " . Meanwhile, Vanessa Agull贸 noted that "the importance of this initiative is twofold, as well earmark the money to buy milk for delivery to families with small children who have no resources, we have also been able to work through one of the groups to which we went, the workshop seniors, who had been commissioned to dress the bears ."

This association works wonders on Gran Alacant, raising funds for many projects. They have recently contributed 2,000 euro for one project alone and another 2,000 euro they divided between 3 worthy causes. Much money has gone to help people and families struggling in this time of austerity.

Whilst our Town Hall are waiting for Valencia to sign off the project, they are using the time to landscape some areas and change the gates to sliding to help access areas. Also planning a childrens play area near the cafe.

WHAT'S THAT FLOWER ? The Wild Flowers of Santa Pola/Gran Alacant by Rose Jackson

LAVENDER COTTON, Santolina chamaecparissis An aromatic upright plant, with a button-like single yellow flowerhead on each stem; the white-grey leaves are narrow and toothed. It occurs in rocky places and is widely grown in gardens, where there are varied forms. Helichrysum stoechas is similar and has thrived in the dry conditions of this Spring, growing in profusion in sandy places. It is strongly aromatic, like curry when crushed, the white-felted, narrow leaves are untoothed, and the unbranched stems bear dense, round clusters of yellow 'everlasting' flowers. RED HOTTENTOT FIG, Carpobrotus acinaciformis Few can fail to notice the bright pink, manypetalled flowers of this low, spreading plant, on banks and roadsides. Sometimes called an ICE PLANT, itsfleshy leaves are three-sided, and the juice from them is said to have antiseptic properties. Part of the fruit, which resembles a fig, is edible. It was exported from S.Africa as a garden plant (from which it sometimes escapes) and in the past was used to stabilise dunes.

THE EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE (EHCRC) CHARITY “THE NEVER ENDING STORY” Following the much published tragedy recently, when the EHCRC were unable to save the life of a young horse starved to death in premises on the outskirts of Torrevieja, the morning of Monday March 24th was a much more joyous occasion. The day started as normal. It was nine o’clock, all of the seventy eight equines had been fed and those stabled overnight were

being turned out to spend the day in their respective paddocks. At nine thirty all this changed when one of the nine mares rescued at the beginning of March along with five other male

42

horses from an illegal horse dealer in Callosa de Segura, lay down in her paddock, and proceeded to give birth to a healthy foal. Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC in Rojales takes up the story, “ We knew the mare was with foal but Dorothea our vet believed she was only about seven months pregnant because of her size. However, the foal was small because of severe malnutrition of the mother. If she had been born three weeks earlier this foal would have not survived. The mare was chained to a concrete wall with several other horses in very close proximity and the foal would probably have been trampled on. After our initial shock and

surprise everyone who was here working at the centre that morning rallied round to separate the mare and her baby from the other eight rescued mares sharing the paddock with her. Dorothea was called and

she came immediately and checked over the pair and all was well health wise. The next thing we had to do was ensure the foal could not get through or under the electric fencing separating the paddocks and wander into danger where our other many equines reside. We wanted to ensure that the mother was still in close contact with her companions which would reduce considerably her stress level. We enlisted the assistance of Linda and Paul at Cookeaze in Dolores who supply us with our food for our Sunday afternoon open days. They kindly donated several wooden pallets to make part of the solid barrier to fence of the new arrival and her mother. The remainder of the secure area came from our great friends and supporters at Rojales Town Hall who rushed to our aid with several large plastic road barriers.” Sue continues, “ Life here at the EHCRC is full of ups and downs and our happiness at the arrival of this beautiful young horse turned to sadness two days later. Arisco, a magnificent old Spanish military horse who we rescued in January 2012 was diagnosed with renal failure and we, on the advice of Dorothea, had him put to sleep. He had two happy years with us and was a favourite with everyone who met him. He will be missed by all of us here who were close to him. Life of course goes on and we welcome visitors

on our Sunday afternoon open days to come and see our new arrival” The EHCRC would welcome any donations or sponsorship to support the work that they are doing. If you are a bar owner or business that wants to hold a charity event to support the Rescue Centre please get in touch with Sue Weeding on 652 021 980 or email David East, PR volunteer on pr@easyhorsecare.net The EHCRC will ensure that your event receives the maximum press and radio publicity plus coverage on their Face book site prior to and after the event. Every single cent donated to the EHCRC charity or spent in any one of their five charity shops located

in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada La Marina or Guardamar goes towards the upkeep and care of the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care. Large items such as furniture that is donated can be collected from your house and likewise delivered after purchase from their charity shops. Contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000 for this service and also if you would like to become a volunteer and work for a few hours or days in any of the shops including the new one on La Marina urbanisation next to Cuts R Us in Avenida Londres. Why not visit the centre on their open days every Sunday between 1 pm and

4 pm where refreshments and tasty food are available in the garden café. Entrance is free. The first horse tour commences at 2 pm where you can get close to, and meet the residents and the new foal and see first hand where your money is spent. For more details about the EHCRC and directions to the centre just outside Rojales visit www.easyhorsecare.net

From the magazine editor: We know our picture last month caused some upset, but we do have to publish the truth. Some of these rescued horses make it and some don’t. Sadly this is the fact of life. What a lovely picture this month!

GASP THEATRE

On Thursday 3rd April, GASP Theatre Group were delighted to present a programme of short plays to the members of the InterClub and their guests at El Rincon Restaurant. The evening’s entertainment, seven comic sketches, was very well received, especially “Red Tape” a wry look at Spanish bureaucracy.

GASP’s next production in early June will be “Outside Edge” a cricket-based farce which spawned a TV series some years ago. Look out for posters in the next few weeks.

CAN YOU HELP US? For “Outside Edge” we need some cricket props. Have you got any old equipment such as bats, pads etc we could borrow for a couple of evenings? Please contact Chris on 966 181 194.

FIRST AID GUIDE FOR ANIMALS

This month, we would like to provide some advice about first aid in animal, not only for ours, but also for any other one we could find when driving or going for a walk.

Remember the most important is always our own safety: if we see a wild animal such a bird or reptile in troubles and we are not sure if could it be dangerous, we’d better not touch it. In that case we can tell SEPRONA (the environmental Guardia Civil unit), Local Police, or a wildlife rescue centre. If possible, we’ll put it into a cardboard box and we’ll take it to the Vet.

Wild animals usually suffer a lot when contacting people, so, the stress they are going to suffer may make worse any disease or injury they suffer previously very easily. So, in these cases, the best option is to keep them in a dark quiet place with a right temperature (watch out for extremely high or low temperatures), till we arrive to the Vet practice. At the practice, the Vet will check the condition of the animal, just in case it’s due for urgent attention, and also will call the environmental agents, who will come and pick it up. If necessary, the animal will have first aid attention and some food.

In case of domestic pets, it’s much easier to know if there is a health problem, and if we will be able to do something for them or not.

Once again, the most important is our safety. If we see next to the road a dog which probably is in troubles, we have to make sure we are not going to make it worse. Sometimes they are scared and run away when we are trying to catch them, becoming an additional problem for the traffic. In this case we’ll let Local Police or Guardia Civil know. Something similar happens when we are trying to rescue an animal from the water: if we are not 100% sure about our ability, we’d better get some help. One important thing to remember: an animal which is suffering a very intense pain (for example when hit by a car) may bite anybody who tries to touch it.

When the pet which is in troubles is ours, everything is easier normally, because we know perfectly its reactions (but remember under some specific circumstances of pain and shock, our pet “may not be itself”…) The following recommendations must be used just for doing something while we arrive to the Vet practice. They are not definitive treatments: What can I do if my pet starts bleeding?

The most important is to locate where the blood is coming from, and why is it bleeding. If we are talking of a big (and easily visible) wound, the best option is to plug it for at least 2 minutes with any tissue we have. When the wound stops bleeding we can put a bandage. Tourniquets are very dangerous if you don’t have enough medical knowledge! If the haemorrhage stops definitively, it’s a good idea to clean the wound for preventing infection. Using just clean water is OK. Never pour white spirit on an open wound. Sometimes, small cuts at ears and tail may bleed a lot, but they are not an emergency. All we have to do is to clean and cover the wound and go to the Vet. Is my pet suffering a heat stroke?

62

This happens when temperatures are high and the dog is under direct sunlight, in a car, or taking intense exercise. We will see the dog starts panting a lot, and its body temperature rises to 40-42ºC. We must make the body temperature come down gradually, by using, for example, wet towels in which we put more fresh water regularly. We can also use the air con.

Heat stroke is always an emergency, so every minute counts (high risk of death caused by renal failure), so even if body temperature is coming down properly, we must see the Vet as soon as possible. Is my pet suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest?

This is a very uncommon condition. Sometimes a very relaxed animal may look like it has stopped breathing, and feeling the heart beat may not be very easy in large animals. But in case of a real stoppage, we will have to use cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In this case, if nothing is done, the animal will die in a matter of minutes, so it’s better to try to do something, even if we are not experts, than letting the animal die without doing anything. We have to put the animal lying in its right side, and then we start pressing the ribs by using one or two hands, about 60-70 times per minute. Despite nowadays it’s considered not very useful, artificial ventilation can be done the following way: we blow air into animal’s nose and mouth. When correctly done, we’ll see the animal’s chest moving as it gets full of air. Has my pet lost the consciousness?

First thing we make sure the animal is able to breathe and the heart is beating. Then we have to clean the mouth and nose if there are traces of saliva, food or vomit. Then, we put its tongue out of its mouth for making breathing easier. If body temperature is coming down, we have to cover the animal with a towel or similar in order to keep it warm. No one of these suggestions may substitute a Vet. Our priority must always be our personal safety and not make things worse. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

Yes, those are parrots in my picture, and no, you haven’t accidentally picked up a copy of “Cage Birds Monthly” instead of your Gran Alacant Advertiser by mistake. Yes, I am telling you about birds you might see in the Clot and around Gran Alacant itself, and no, they shouldn’t be here!

These two are Peach-faced Lovebirds, and somewhere, somebody has an empty cage – either because these birds are well-known in the cage bird fraternity as being supreme escape artists, or perhaps the owner became weary of their squawking and “accidentally” set them free. Whatever the reason, they are now living around the communal pool area across from my house in Monte y Mar and appear to be doing quite well feeding off the palm trees. The environment seems to suit them, although they are far away from their natural habitat in the arid deserts of Namibia in Southern Africa.

The green bird is the normal colouration in the wild, and the yellow bird is a common mutation developed by cage bird breeders, but there is no easy way to tell if this is a breeding pair or not, but they face a difficult future in any case. They appear to be strong fast fliers, but may be unaware of the danger from predators of which they have little or no experience.

It raises the thorny question of alien species occurring in the wild due to human actions (or in some cases carelessness). Those of you who come from southern areas of the UK, particularly around London, will know that there are now large flocks of Ring-necked Parakeets, which have established a sustained breeding population which is spreading northwards, causing damage to gardens and depriving resident birds of nesting sites. This species also occurs in some numbers in Barcelona, and also in a few areas of Alicante City. Monk Parakeets are to be found in Cartagena as well. Those of you who can speak Spanish may have seen the notice board at the main hide in the Clot, warning against the release of unwanted pets, particularly the popular Red-eared Terrapin from the USA which displaces the native Spanish Pond Turtle. There are many examples of invasive species which effectively damage the ecosystem, not just birds and animals but plants as well, and my American birding friends are furious that introduced birds from Europe such as the Starling and House Sparrow have supplanted some of their more interesting birds.

In the meantime, our two Lovebirds make a colourful addition to our area, but not necessarily an acceptable one from an ecological point of view. See you next month.
