Hello

Very important this month are the elections. We have adverts, paid for, by two of the parties.

Good heavens, May is here again. Holiday makers should start to descend on the area, which will be good news to all of us business people.

Nice to see a few new bars and restaurants opening up for the summer, all ready to welcome the tourists. We wonder which political party we will be meeting with next month. We hope whoever they are, keep us informed with all of the local news every month, to keep our readers up to date with all that is new in our area.

Have a good month Sandra & Barry

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 53.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!

Dear Barry and Sandra, May I thank you on the behalf of the Times Square Cycle Club and all the corporate and non corporate persons who have provided such brilliant support to Teenage Cancer Trust. Teenage Cancer Trust was an existing charity at the time of Stephen Sutton’s diognosis with terminal cancer, but his drive, enthusiasm and passion to help others through raising money for the charity really put it on the map. Stephen was brought up in Burntwood, Staffordshire, where he attended local schools, which included Highfields Primary School where my late wife Liz Hazel taught Stephen. In support of Stephen, the Burntwood and surrounding towns and villages displayed yellow ribbons, this being replicated this year. ( http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2015/03/28/burntwood-to-turnyellow-for-one-year-anniversary-of-stephen-suttons-death/) Just before Stephen’s passing in May of last year, the world was captured by his passion for life and the good that he brought to the world through his fund raising. Donations were received from around the world and Stephen’s plight appeared nationally and internationally across news programmes. It was during the spring of last year that the Times Square Bike Club decided to support Stephen’s charity, the group having been positively affected by Stephen and as a consequence of Liz having taught this inspirational young man. Originally, the charity ride was due to take place on November 2nd, but was delayed as a consequence of the sudden and unexpected passing of Liz. On March 20th, 4 riders from the Times Square Bike Club embarked on their ride from Barcelona to Gran Alacant, these being Gavin Martin, Richard Mills, Karen Grundeken and Robert Hazel. The 543 kilometre trip was made more difficult by the cyclists choice of cycle, these being mountain bikes that the club regularly uses across the hills of Gran Alacant and surrounding areas, the ride reaching a conclusion on Thursday 26th March. In total, the cycle club aim to raise £2500 for the teenage cancer charitywww.justgiving.com/TimesSquareCycleClub) and are already

is the Mayor of Santa Pola and candidate of the Popular Party (PP) to the mayoralty of our town the next 24th May. He has presented a list of new and dynamic people who will work for Santa Pola if they win the next municipal elections.

What is the most important change you would highlight on this new group of people you are presenting?

Firstly, with this new group of people we want to combine youth and experience, the capacity to manage administration and coherence when taking decisions. We have made up a list of candidates who will reinforce even more the work we have done already in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola during the last years.

It is important to revise what you have done and what you will like to do in the future.

We are aware about the necessity of the second school in Gran Alacant and, unfortunately, it is not already built. Obviously, the main problem with this situation is the important economic crisis in which Spain is involved. However, Spain is improving this situation and we will continue with the fighting to obtain this infrastructure and many others for our citizens. Moreover, I would like to mention the immediate action we are going to take changing the piping connections next to Panorama that will improve the problems we have in this area and the restoration of the bridge located close to the petrol station. Regarding Gran Alacant, which actions will you highlight?

We have been working very hard improving the infrastructures and services in the area. We have built pavements and installed signs to improve the security in the streets. Moreover, we have built the new street market and extended the services of medical and social services. We have improved the services at the library and the Youth Club and we have given importance to the parks in the area. In addition, we have changed the old rubbish containers for new ones fulfilling some of our citizens’ requirements.

People who were living in Gran Alacant 12 years ago know perfectly how the area was then, and how different it looks now. We have been working hard to improve Gran Alacant and, therefore, to improve your lives. We are politicians who honestly work for our city and what is even more important for us, to work for our citizens.

This change of the project would also solve the perceived problem of high salinity. for some shopping as I pushed the supermarket trolley up the first isle I was awhere that there seemed to be people milling about. A man approached me, he put his foot out to try and stop me going forward. He had lots of shopping in his arms and was trying to get me to reach up for something, because I had heard of this scam before, I politely said sorry and pushed my trolley over his foot to get away from him. I noticed that two men had crept up behind me with the sole purpose of grabbing my bag or purse while I was reaching up. I found my husband who was elsewhere in the store and we watched them and sure enough they were trying to scam other people, they realized we had seen what they were up to and hurriedly left the store We reported it to a member of staff who seemed awhare of people involved so maybe it as been going on for a long time. I would just like to make people aware that this could happen to them and to be on guard. Yours truly J Barnes

Thank you for the above. This happens quite frequently in Lidl and we have heard that the store make no effort to stop it. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com..

Hi everybody

In the little village of Biar, one hour driving form Santa Pola, takes place one of my favourite celebrations in the Costa Blanca. There is a special day to go there and it is on the 10th of May If you go you will experience fiesta, tradition, music, fires, fireworks and much more. There are, of course, more parades, the programme is more or less as follows: Petrer 14th to 18th and 20th to 25th in Salinas ,

Also there are special events like the one held in Torrevieja 6th of May to 10th “Feria de Mayo” or in Monforte del Cid-Orito another popular pilgrimage “Romería de San Pascual”.

Also “Las Cruces de Mayo” Cross of May, Crosses made with flowers in la Cruz Street in Santa Pola 1st 2nd and 3rd, and the most beautiful ones are shown in the old quarter of Alicante “Barrio la Cruz” same dates as in Santa Pola.

If you like sports, and like Karate, you can attend the competition held at the Fortress-Castle on the 26th and 30th. The Fortress becomes an open air gym. If you like martial arts you should not miss this event. That’s all friends, Jose

The other week someone threw a young puppy over a very high terrace wall. The owner of the house is Spanish and found it in the morning very scared cold and hungry.

APOEM Why did you throw me over that high wall, have you no heart, have you no soul, I am only a pup and very small, oh why did you throw me over that wall. I lay on the terrace all though the night, could not think what could be in sight, was it because I am a pick and mix, or maybe too young to perform any tricks, why not take me to a rescue place, where people will want me when they see my face. Why did you leave me lost and alone, not wanted by you I lost my home. oh why did you throw me over that wall. The lovely Spanish man who found the little dog is keeping it so a happy ending to what could have been very different story. One question comes to mind to the dumper, how do you sleep at night. You have read the story in our news section, but it does not explain the horrendous rainy and windy conditions, these four, had to endure, all with the aim of raising money for Charity. We followed the ride on facebook and felt so sorry for them choosing the wettest spell of the year. Even more commendable in what they all achieved.....well done.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

A NEW EMERGING DISEASE: DOG INFLUENZA No, we haven´t “discovered” kennel cough in 2015. This is a completely different disease, despite both are respiratory tract infections, so their symptoms are very similar. As every horse owner should know, equine flu is a very well known infectious disease for nearly 50 years, caused by a virus called H3N8, which affects horses and donkeys and produces coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and, in some cases, pneumonia. Well, it looks like some Vets found out in Florida in 2003 that some racing Greyhounds suffered the equine virus, so, same as happened in 1978, when feline Parvovirus jumped from cat to dog (once again in America), a virus has mutated in order to affect a new species. This disease, same as human and equine flu, is an extremely contagious one, which spreads very quickly through the air (no direct contact between dogs is necessary), and when the virus arrives, nearly 100% of the animals are going to catch it, 80% are going to suffer respiratory symptoms, and a small number of them (normally old and previously ill animals), may eventually develop a dangerous pneumonia. Normal symptoms may be easily confused with kennel cough, and include coughing, high temperature, nasal and ocular sticky discharge. Despite they suspect the disease can be suffered by cats as well, there is no evidence at all of transmission to human beings. As far as we know, this disease hasn’t arrived to Europe yet, but it’s becoming a problem in America, where nowadays Chicago area is suffering an important outbreak with a high number of infected dogs (despite mortality is very low). There is a vaccine available in America which has been developed from the equine one, and has proved to be effective for controlling the disease. So far, is not available in Spain, but sooner or later, because of the high number of pets which travel abroad, the disease (and the vaccine), will arrive to Spain. There is a blood test available in America for detecting the virus, but fortunately is not 100% necessary for a successful treatment to make a good diagnosis, because canine flu and kennel cough share the same treatment: antibiotics to prevent opportunist infections, anti-inflammatories for controlling the fever, and other medicines for controlling the mucus and the coughing. Except in a minimum number of cases, the dog will get rid of the infection by itself, just using its immunity. Despite this is not a life-threatening disease, we think it’s something to be taken into account if you are taking a dog to America, because of the high risk of importing the virus to Europe. WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

I remember once being told by an Eminent Professional Ornithologist in an online bird forum a few years ago, that I couldn’t possibly have seen a Woodpigeon on my offshore drilling rig in the North Sea – because Woodpigeons don’t migrate across the North Sea. Yes I have, I told him, and what’s more I’ve got the photographs to prove it – in fact I had several photos of offshore Woodpigeons taken over the course of several years. The E.P.O. harrumphed a bit, but finally conceded the point!

by Mark Etheridge

Which only goes to prove that the experts don’t always get it right. I have a copy of the Collins Bird Guide for Britain and Europe – and if you are at all serious about identifying birds here in Spain you really ought to have this book – and it is open at the page describing this month’s bird, the Black Wheatear (Collalba Negra in Spanish). It tells me that the bird lives in rough dry rocky areas with few trees, and usually “avoids the proximity of man”. It goes on to say that this bird is shy and flushes early, so you can’t get close to it.

The bird in my photograph is sitting on my next-door neighbour’s roof, and was quite happy to pose for me for several minutes, I see him almost every day when I am in Gran Alacant, and to my certain knowledge has been in the same place on my urbanisation for several years, presumably raising a series of families during that time. He certainly isn’t bothered by people walking round the area, and spends a lot of time hunting for insects in and around our communal pool.

The Black Wheatear is an uncommon bird in our area, I have seen one or two reports of them being seen on the rocky slopes in the Clot just below the high-rise flats in Arenales, which is their usual habitat, and also they are regular on the cliffs along the Santa Pola coast road. They are resident all year round, and restricted mostly to the Iberian peninsula in Europe, so many visiting birders will be keen to see one. and have to range far and wide to catch a glimpse of one, so the question is – is my local Black Wheatear a one-off, or an indication that the birds are adapting to changes in the environment?

It just goes to show that you can’t make generalisations about where you are likely to see a particular bird because as soon as you do, some clever clogs will come along and prove you are wrong. Birds also have the annoying habit of flying around and landing in the “wrong” place – which makes birding all the more fun!

See you next month.
