Hello everyone, Our front cover picture this month, supplied by Star Hayne. More pictures from this event in Alicante in this issue. If you have any good photos, please send them to us for publication. Our Macintosh computer finally gave up the ghost whilst getting the October edition ready, so, if you take up our offer on page 12, you could soon be the proud owner of a very shiny new imac. Last month we were back in the UK for 10 days, visiting friends and family and very enjoyable too. If we were a bit slow on some of our contact replies, this is why. We cannot believe the October weather, summer has gone on and on. Our next issue will be the Christmas edition. We would appreciate copy coming to us early in November if possible. Have a good month Sandra & Barry Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 53 in Canada.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!!

I am a dog owner and I respect the urbanisation I walk round the estate with our dog and never leave any mess on pavement I noticed yesterday that its still being left and not picked up.

Saludos, Graham. ...........granalacantadvertiser.com........ Hi everybody!
Just a few words to let you know what’s going on this month.
No Moors and Christians parades in November, however there is still something to go and have a look at. The biggest fair in the Costa Blanca that takes place in Cocentaina 31st to the 2nd of November, Cocentaina is next to Alcoy. The fair is divided in many areas: medieval, street market, agriculture trade, typical products, food etc‌ In Elche from 24th October to 2nd of November it will be held the XIX medieval festival, with plenty of activities, theatre, and music. Fiestas in Benidorm from 8th to 12th with music, fireworks.
There is also a fantastic programme at the Teatro Principal de Alicante and Gran Teatro in Elche. I suppose you know how we, Spanish people, go to the Cemetery to take flowers to our lost relatives, even if I am not very fond of this tradition I must admit that day, the first of November, the cemetery becomes an impressive place with thousands of flowers. Also there are pilgrimages and local fiestas in La Nucia, Tibi, and Onil. Bye- bye friends.

We have been having a break since performing 'Outside Edge' in June. Thanks to all who supported us in this demanding production. We hope to make a donation to Cruz Roja soon. In the meantime, rehearsals have started for a play written by one of our members, Terry Lacey, called 'Eighteen shady greens' plus a short piece by North Costa Blanca writer Peter Henham. There is also a chance of a short seasonal piece. It is hoped to stage these just before Christmas. We have been looking for an alternative location to use as the Life Resort rental is expensive & limits our ability to make donations. MONTEMAR BOWLS AND SOCIAL CLUB (Sponsored by Dial Prix)
Hola Everyone. Time again for our Monthly report. Weather still nice and warm so I think everyone who plays Bowls are enjoying it. The Season is now underway and all the Teams, Matadors, on Monday and Fridays. Toreadors, on Monday and Fridays. and the Winter League on Wednesday have all started very well, so hopefully we can keep it going and have a season to remember. On Saturday 18th October we had a Touring side from my neck of the woods from the Preston Club in Brighton East Sussex, It was a great day of Bowling and all who took part very much enjoyed themselves. The Bowling was a very high standard but the best thing about these matches is the fun that you all have. The Preston team Won on 3 Rinks and MonteMar won on 2 Rinks but MonteMar won the overall Shots so it ended in a Draw. Afterwards we had a meal together and quite a few drinks so all in all a very enjoyable day. ( see pic of both Captains).

Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site. GREAT To view more animals for adoption go to: www.petsinspain.com NEWS If you would like to advertise an animal email: info@petsinspain.info Unfortunately we are struggling with a couple of the dogs we rescued from the hoarders house, so need to advertise them again. Balu from last month’s edition has been adopted.
Daisy is a 1 year old Jack Russell girl and she had her 3 month old pup following her everywhere in the house with over 300 dogs so we rescued them both. Daisy has a lovely nature and will be sterilised next week. She is good with other dogs and weighs around 6 kilos. Call: 645 469 253 Heidi is such a sweet little girl, she was 1 of 300 dogs in a house in Murcia that needed urgent rescue and one of the quietest ones. She is around 6 months old, good with other dogs and will be medium size when fully grown. Call: 645 469 253

Up-date on Faith from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation.
Faith the amputee pony to receive new prosthesis aid from America A special gel sock developed for a dolphin with a prosthetic tail is being sent from America to Spain to help a neglected pony whose leg was amputated three years ago. Faith the pony was found in 2010 with a mutilated foreleg after she was left for days badly entangled in her own rope. She was rescued by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales but, despite their best efforts, Faith’s leg had to be amputated and she earned fame as Spain’s first pony to be fitted with a prosthetic leg. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said the special gel sock will help cushion Faith’s stump from her prosthetic leg, preventing rubbing and chafing. “We’ve got a little pony who loves her leg and she’s very active, she’s on the go all the time,” Sue said. “Pressure sores are always a problem for human amputees and even more so for horses, because they carry most of their weight on their front legs. So it’s important that Faith doesn’t have any discomfort because then she starts to rely on her other front leg and overload it.” The special gel sock was developed to help Winter the dolphin in America, whose tail had to be amputated after she was caught in a crab trap. Winter’s Gel has since been developed for humans, helping thousands of amputees. “We tried it out a year ago on Faith and it was so good that she’s actually worn it out and needs a new one,” Sue said. The fame of Faith’s case, along with several other high-profile rescues, catapulted animal welfare into the public spotlight in the Alicante region. For now, Faith remains at the Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona, cared for by a team of veterinarians including Gasper Castelijns, who served Spain’s 2012 equestrian Olympic team and helps the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre with specialist cases. “The amputation was the right thing to do,” Sue says. “It’s given Faith a wonderful life. She lives in five-star accommodation, she’s loved and cared for, and I suspect there’s lots of very healthy, four-legged little miniature horses that would love to have this life.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes donations and sponsorships to help support their work. Every cent donated to the centre or spent in the eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the many horses, ponies and donkeys. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is open to the public between 1pm and 4pm every Sunday until 2nd November and then the first Sunday of every month starting December 7th. The centre is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.or call. Sue 652 021 980

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Well, that’s all the exciting Spanish summer birds like the Bee-eater and Roller away south until next year, and all you’re likely to see for the next few months are some rather dull Black Redstarts and lots of little olive-green Chiffchaffs foraging in the Clot all winter. It must be a pretty boring time for birdwatchers, you might be thinking.
Well, no, it isn’t. Winter in the Clot brings one of my favourite small birds to the area – one which I look forward to every year. It is the Bluethroat, or Pechiazul Comun in Spanish, and a smart little thing it is too. Related to the Robin in a second-cousin-twice-removed kind of way, it comes to our area from its breeding ranges which stretch from the North of Spain right across continental Europe up towards Siberia, but for some strange reason it is not usually found in Britain, except as an annual vagrant. In the bad old days, when British naturalists “collected” birds by shooting them with a gun rather than a camera, any passing Bluethroat was likely to be blasted out of the sky, which didn’t do much for their numbers.
As you can see from my photograph, the adult male bird has a bright blue and red pattern around its throat, but there will also be quite a few females with a duller chest pattern, and also juveniles where the colourful pattern will slowly develop over the next few months, so that by the time the young males are ready to move back northwards they will be in their full finery.
These birds always associate themselves with damp areas, so the best place to look for them is in and around the reedbeds at the main pool in the Clot, and also from the nearby Zeiss hide – look out to both sides of the hide as well as out in front of you. They tend to be a little furtive, but with patience you can see them feeding on mozzies and other assorted insects, setting themselves up for their long journey, and by the end of March you won’t see them back here until next October. You might hear one before you see it, making a little thwacking noise which sounds a bit like the noise a rope on a flagpole makes on a windy day. My picture shows one with a white spot in the centre of its blue bib, but they also come in a red-spotted version which is quite rare in our area. You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
