Advertising prices still the same as when we launched in January 2005 and FREE advertising in the magazine on our website. Hello
This September edition of our magazine, has had to be produced in double quick time. The printer closed for holidays, so had a week less than usual to get everything done. Thank you to everyone for your help in achieving this, if you did get to us too late, sorry.
We expect the silly season is over now September is here and everyone is getting back to normal. It is great to see Gran Alacant busy but, also nice when it quietens down abit and with still lovely warm sunny days for us to enjoy. Have a good month

Our little dog from the front cover has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 72.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, and answers to your questions, from Paco Carbonell, Councilor of Citizen of Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any questions or problems you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine.
We start with answers to last months emails QUESTION phone coverage on Gran Alacant
Town Hall answer..This problem is not easy to rectify. There are only a few places where a mast can be legally placed, and in each case residents would not allow it to be erected near to them..so..at the moment the only answer is to maybe get your community to place a mast inside your comunity so that you can get a good signal from your house. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com...
QUESTION illegal taxis on Gran Alacant
Town Hall answer..We at the magazine said that if the legal taxis want all the work the illegals supplied, they have to step up to the plate and provide the required service. The Town Hall are very aware of the prices, clock started from Santa Pola, not contactable etc etc. We suggested the Town Hall provide the taxi service with a room at the Commercial Centre where the taxi company can have a person behind the desk where people can go to and book their flights back to the airport.
4
They can even show on a map in the office, where they live. If people coming to our Urbanisation for holidays have big worries about not getting back to the airport for their flights, visitors will stop coming here. Mayoress Yolanda had only a few days earlier had a meeting with the taxi people, news of this next month. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com...
QUESTION can we have signs on bins Dear Barry and Sandra,I am Giuseppe Messina from Calle Monte De Santa Pola and after a long spell of silence I am returning to complaining about the state of cleanness or I should say the lack of cleanness around the nice new bins that finally the Council has given us the honour to use. It has to be said, like on the Guinness advert, that good things come to those that can wait, like shining new plastics new bins, now we have one for plastics, and one for paper/card board, that is all very well but as they are not clearly marked with what we should put inside, I
normally watch people from my window puzzled about what to do,so I believe that the Council should have in very big letters what the yellow and the blue one is for as obviously many people still don't know. I also complain to the lack of cleanness around the organic bins in particular, the stains are horrible and very smelly,of course this due to those very nice people that can't be bothered to put their residue inside the proper container,so they leave them(or sometime throw them from their moving car)and,of course,at night the feral cats feast on them breaking the plastic bags and the liquids in consequence leak on to the road. I have complained several times to the Council about cleaning the roads with pressurized washers and also use some kind of cleaner that would dissolve the dirt and grease, but all I have seen until now is somebody doing a quick job with very bad results,so please next time that you will be holding a meeting with a member of the Council, please mention this. I am sure this is not an isolate case,as driving around Gran Alacant I have seen places worst,so why not having a clean Gran Alacant,a place to be proud of instead of a place were myself and my wife can't have a stroll without making some sort of complain due to the lack of cleanness.
Obviously this part of Spain that we live in has got a very dry climate during the summer months unlike England were it rains very often, and of consequence the roads get cleaned naturally, whereas here only the human intervention can assure a clean environment. Many thanks Giuseppe Messina
Town Hall answer..The contract at the moment stipulates when, how etc bins should be emptied and the area around them cleaned. The Town Hall will now look at the contract and make changes they think necessary in light of comments. It is thought that everybody should know which bin is for what rubbish. Perhaps to help, we will print each month in our magazine, bin colours and what should go in them. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com...
Apologies to Stefan Ostins for not puting his name to the darts pictures in last months issue. Again, sorry. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com...
Hi Barry and Sandra. I hope you are well. I won't be around until next week but in the meantime, if you are in contact with the town hall could you clarify the following. The Tour of Spain, La Vuelta starts on 22 August. Stage 9, Sunday, 30 August, departs
5
Torrevieja in the morning, finishing north of Calpe. I can't
find an exact route but it does pass through Santa Pola, so I presume it is following the N332, north. That being the case, I would also presume there will be road closures during the day and for residents of GA it might be difficult to travel north and south. Can the town hall confirm the arrangements for the day and is it too soon/late to add something to the next Advertiser? All the best Geoff
Town Hall answer..sorry from us at the magazine, but the event took place before this issue was printed, but, it was nice to know that such a big event past through our area. The riders were due to pass Gran Alacant on the N332 early afternoon on August 30th. This information was of course too late for this edition so hope you managed to find out about it in time. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com... We printed pictures last month of
6
the ground work being prepared for the new Burger King on Gran Alacant. Well, in less than a month it is all finished and up and running. Being seen from the N332 it may encourage passing motorists to call
onto our urbanisation. Every little helps. ...www.granalacantadvertiser.com...
In our discussions at the Town Hall, they have one or two new plans for the future which we are sure our readers will be very pleased with...so...watch this space and keep reading our news. Sandra and Barry

You will have seen the K9 club page each month in our magazine for homing dogs. There is much more to the Club as shown in the article below.
Didi This morning this little girl came into our shop on La Marina. She had been found by the owner of a local bar and all I can say is thank goodness. As you can see she is in a dreadful state and immediately required medical attention. Didi was so terrible that the receptionist on seeing her became very distressed.
Anyway thankfully she is now in the care of K9 and our very experienced Kennel Managers where she will receive round the clock care. She has been isolated and is under close observation as basically the next 2 or 3 days are critical.obviously it will be a long haul for her but this is all part of our job at K9. Yes they are ticks all over her body. It took the vet over an hour to clean off what he could and our kennel managers carried on with the treatment.

Update as of 04 Aug 15 Well this Morning she finally turned the corner, after having to have 3 enema in the week, we finally had the result we been waiting for. Hopefully from now on its just building her up, gaining weight and trust. She still has sores all over her body from twigs and tics, but nothing a good layer of creme three times a day and a lot of TLC will sort. May I say thank you for the many messages, good wishes and offers of homes. She will not be ready for a good while yet as we only re-home once fit and well, vaccinated and tested for any problems. You can follow her story on our website at www.k9club.es

DO YOU THINK YOUR PET’S HEALTH IS A LUXURY ARTICLE? OUR GOVERNMENT DOES
There is being a signature campaign in most Vet practices that will end on September 9th , for trying to make the Spanish Government reduce the VAT that charges Vet services (except the ones involving livestock), from 21% (luxury VAT), to the normal one for the other sanitary professions (10%). There even are some professions (dentists, psychologists) which are VAT-free. The results of the campaign will be transmitted to both Spain Prime Minister and Minister of Finances. When the campaign is over, the details of people that have signed will be kept according to Spanish Data Protection Policy and Protection of Privacy Act (LOPD: Ley Orgánica de Protección de Datos). In 2012, the Government decided, according to EU recommendations for “solving the crisis”, to increase the VAT that charges Vet services non involving livestock from the reduced type (8%) to the luxury one (21%). This means that, despite clients are paying more than they used to do before 2012, Vet practices are not earning more money (as a matter of fact, most of them are earning less), because these extra vanishes when time to pay taxes. Sometimes, these higher prices make unaffordable for some owners some medical or surgical treatments, or diagnostics, whose pets need. Besides, if we are talking of a disease which is likely to be transmitted to humans (such as Leishmaniasis), the problem is not only for the pet and its owner, but becomes a real public health problem. There are about 20 millions of pets in Spain. Most of them have important “tasks” such as accompanying their owners, encouraging the elderly to go out for a walk, rising self-esteem, and improving interpersonal communication. All these benefits pets produce, are even more evident in case of children, disabled, and senior people. A pet is, no doubt, another member of the family, so, it’s really a shame that Vets and pets owners are punished for a crisis that, in most cases they didn’t contributed to create, and, due to this unfair punishment, endanger both animal and human health. Our task as Vets is, not only to watch pet’s health, but also, consequently, people’s health. For all these reasons we request everybody’s cooperation for trying to reduce the VAT that Vet services support, from 21 to 10%. For extra information you can have a look at the official website of Alicante Vet College.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
People of a certain age might remember the 1950’s TV programme “Quatermass and the Pit” in which the redoubtable professor Q dug a hole in London to find an alien spacecraft – when they opened it up they found some space aliens which turned out to be extremely large insect-looking things. I remember I watched it mostly from behind the sofa, but the image of those ghastly insects has stayed with me ever since. I was reminded of this programme the other day when I found this insect on my wall at Monte y Mar. The head and upper thorax were exactly as I remembered the TV aliens, so I decided to find out a bit more about this species, and if it was indeed extra-terrestrial. Sadly it turns out that it isn’t – and neither is it a rare species in our part of Spain. It is an Egyptian Grasshopper – and the colours indicate that it is a female. If you look very carefully at my picture, you may be able to see that the eyes are vertically striped, which is the easiest way to identify these creatures. This one was just short of 3 inches (65 cm) and this makes it one of the largest grasshoppers in Europe. It is the one which frightens you as you are walking along a track, when it jumps out noisily from under your feet and whirrs away a short distance, only to perform the same feat once again a little further on. There are plenty of them in the Clot, where they provide a ready meal for many of the birds and animals in the reserve. Although it might make you jump, these grasshoppers are perfectly harmless, feeding on leaves but not usually cash crop foliage. Some of you could be thinking that this looks like the famed locust of biblical plague fame – although this is an Egyptian Grasshopper, the somewhat larger Desert Locust is the main culprit for all the doom and gloom the locust brings, and the Egyptian Grasshopper is mostly a solitary animal just getting on with life without bothering anyone at all. I suppose the natural reaction to seeing one of these is not usually positive, but rest assured you are in no danger. This does not stop the wilder elements of the British Media from having a field day whenever one of these insects accidentally arrives in the UK – usually in a consignment of fruit or vegetables. Cue the anguished mum, the kids who will need counselling and over-excited journalists who suspect a foreign invasion – it’s just not cricket! You can see more photos of wildlife in our area by visiting my site at: HYPERLINK "http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/" http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
