We have been asked if we could interest anybody who goes to watch Elche football, whether they would be interested in signing up to travel to and from the game on a coach. You will be dropped outside the stadium and picked up at the final whistle for the return journey. You can email any interest to us at the magazine:granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk
Blimey it’s been warm, just the weather for spending time on our beautiful beaches and swimming in the warm mediterranean. We sometimes watch others around us in the sea, thinking that they have had to save up all year for a holiday with us. And we enjoy it for free.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! It is always quite a problem for us to produce our September issues. We must say a big thank to all of our advertisers and contributers for the help they have given us. Our printer always closes for holidays on the last week of August, at the time they always print our magazine. So, we have to have it printed one week earlier, which means one week less to get everything together before printing. again, thank you to everyone. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. As August progresses we see more people on the beaches and in the sea. The influx is not too bad if they are just holiday makers, but, as each summer we are also seeing more and more opportunists. During August we received emails warning of some bank cash points on GA being tampered with. The police were aware and some supermarkets were even warning customers. The grapevine seemed to work quite quickly and hopefully now all is behind us. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. There were also a family making their way around a few restaurants, have a nice meal and a drink, and running off without paying. A description was made to the police and hopefully, again, all is behind us. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. The advert of social networks do help all of us to get together to report any problems like the above. Once we know, we email Loreto, who contacts the police and hopefully all is then sorted. It is all thanks to people who live on our lovely urbanisation who really care about the

place to spread the word if trouble is evident, as quickly as possible. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. If you use facebook, link any problems to our facebook page at www.facebook.com/GranAlacantAdvertiser where we can forward any problems that we are made aware of. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. Over the past, almost 10 years, of our magazine, we have had price risers everywhere. Food, drink, and all household bills, everything except rises in our advert prices. And we will not be putting them up. Still the best prices for advert sizes in the area. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. We have been asked if the garden area at the end of the Carabasi Complex could have a rubbish bin in the garden area where the seating is. Those using the seating are just throwing their rubbish in the garden, which the restaurant owners there, have to keep clearing it up. That area is owned by the owner of the Commercial Centre so the Town Hall cannot interfere with that land, so you will have to contact the owners. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. Will we ever get a seat installed up the long hill from the fountain roundabout. We have asked so many times? Whilst we were with Loreto, she phoned and asked for this to be put into being. Fingers crossed! -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. PRESS RELEASE Santa Pola launches wi-fi on the beach of Levante The collaboration between the Department of

Beaches and local Cable TV company has allowed starting from 6th August "Tele Cable Wifree", a free wi-fi that bathers can enjoy on the Levante beach, this is the first phase of a project medium term to take internet connection at all city beaches of Santa Pola. Loreto Serrano, explained that "we have spent several years working on this project, and were among the first municipalities in Spain who launched
this service on the beaches, which is an incentive for anyone who enjoys their leisure time on our coastline ". I単aki Osuna, Tele Cable manager, wanted to "thank the trust you haveplaced in us for a good implementation and hence to collaborate with several associations providing free service internet, and now we start this network we call "Wifree" which is free for both the user and the council." For legal reasons, "the law requires that
Wi-Fi access in the center of town, but for legal reasons we had to stop it. Now we are developing again, thanks to the collaboration of Cable Tele Santa Pola, which is the company that won the concession of fixed telephone services and broadband internet in our City, so this initiative has no cost to us. " Serrano added that "we started a pilot project in two areas, the first is the Levante beach, in the section from the bar to the Los Curros accessible point. The second will be in Grand Beach, where we are doing a study of waves prior to their implementation. Our ultimate goal is to have wi-fi covering all urban beaches in the city, because it is a request that we have asked for and therefore appreciate the collaboration of Tele Cable ". For his part, Francisco Martin, Councillor for Youth and Sports, emphasized that "it is true that the young have requested
the free wi-fi are limited in speed, in this case we have symmetrical 512 kb, with some services also restricted by legal imperative. In future we will provide unrestricted access to the Red Cross, local police, etc.," said Osuna. To access the Wifree, you only need to locate the name in the search wi-fi mobile networks and to redirect the browser to a web page through which you may have access to internet. In coming days, users must register and login to access the service. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. Good evening Barry & Sandra, Nice to talk to you the other day outside the Chinese bazaar,I am sorry to again trouble you about the same old problem, but I have not got any choice because if I don't do something nobody will bother. The second, and very big problem comes from the refuse collection lorry, this one when stops to empty the containers leaks very profusely from the back, and this very smelly liquid goes on
less, and when they are actually here, they are now using a very inadequate method that consist in just hosing down the dirty area with no pressurized water jet and the use of chemicals. Of course, when the water dries, the black stains are left behind! So I am asking myself why they can't get it right, have they got no common sense to understand that without the use of chemicals, and without the use of a strong water jet they are wasting their time and our money? Finally I would like to thank you both for the very fine job that you do for the community of Gran Alacant, and very much we appreciate your help. Best of regards Giuseppe Messina Loreto and the bin people do inspect the bins once a week in the summer to see problem areas. Main concerns at the moment are some of the supermarkets. They have been warned that if they do not comply with agreements, they may have to face up to a ₏750 fine. -.-.-.-.-.-.www.granalacantadvertiser.com.-.-.-.-.-.-. The new Santa Pola Water Park looks to be one heck of a project. The company building the Park are renting the land off the Town Hall. Today I was at my window, and in two occasion this happened, so either they find a solution so the lorry stops from leaking or it or followed by a vehicle that will wash with the proper tools and chemicals the mess left behind. On my last letter that you included in one of your issue of your magazine, I actually praised the Council for finally cleaning the road around the refuse bins, but since their visit got less and

The draft Cableski Santa Pola is an initiative of the company Ubackparks, responsible for the creation, maintenance and operation of two sheets of water proyecto.Tendrรก 150 meters each approximately with a PVC coating on all lakes to simulating an ocean or a pool of turquoise. Around, in all areas where it will be placed on public, will host an area of artificial grass and wood, to create a pleasant and shaded environment. In the bar area there will be an infinity pool, which is surrounded by Balinese beds and hammocks.
The water comes from an underground outlet, authorized by the Ministry. The project, unique in Europe (only the same type in Thailand and the United States it is located), will allow practitioners of these specialties come to Santa Pola to train all year round, not just during the summer months. As for water sports that can be practiced, highlight the Wakeboard, Ski-aquatic, Barefoot (skiing barefoot), Kneeboard (with a table in which you go on knees), a special track single skimboard in Spain, a special lake for supyoga (yoga on a large, wide surfboard) and paddlesurf. You can see the park on your left as you The different activities that work drive on the N332 past Santa Pola. with the cable system will have minimal noise impact, practically zero, since it will be two very quiet engines. The Cableski system comprises two pulleys, powered by an electric motor. The towers necessary to route the cable will be grounded, so security is high and the impact these may have on neighboring facilities will be minimal.
Mallorca, Barcelona, Italy, Netherlands, are some geographical locations where the company has installed such parks. The project is completely financed by private monies and the land is being rented from our Town Hall.

A DAY IN THE OCEAN
One thing often said about Gran Alacant is that there is nothing to do other than beach, bars and restaurants. I came across Dive Academy Santa Pola on google, rang them up and booked onto their famous Snorkel Safari to Tabarca Marine Reserve. Gary and Wayne the owners who live in Gran Alacant were happy to pick us up on route to the dive centre 10 minutes away. We had a fantastic trip and when we sat down for Tea, Coffee or Beers afterwards they told me I could actually go scuba diving!! I thought it was only the Jacques Cousteau’s and professionals that could do it. We booked to do the Discover Scuba Diving course designed to teach you step by step and although I was nervous to begin with the instructor was very professional and we
There was this guy at a bar, just looking at his drink. He stays like that for a half hour. Then a big trouble making truck driver steps next to him, takes the drink from the guy, & just drinks it all down. The poor man starts crying. The truck driver says, "Come on man, I was just joking. Here, I'll buy you another drink. I just can't stand to see a man cry." "No, it's not that," the man replies, wiping his tears, "This day is the worst of my life. First, I oversleep & I go in late to my office. My outraged boss fires me. When I leave the building to go to my car, I find out it was stolen. The police say they can do nothing. I get a cab to go home, & when I get out, I remember I left my wallet. The cab driver just drives away. I go inside my house where I find my wife in bed with the gardener. I leave my home, come to this bar, & just when I was thinking about putting an end to my life, you show up & drink my poison."
ended up having a lot of fun. It wasn’t as scary as first thought and we got photos to prove we did it! We travelled in the dive van to the site and then started with a theory lesson. Then we entered the water from the beach so it was nice and shallow and we completed some exercises designed to put you at ease. Then we went for our first dive in shallow water but later after a break for lunch we got to go back in and try a little deeper. This was the best one as I was so relaxed by then and we saw loads of fish and Octopus. We are all going to book for our Open water Diver licences and we get 10% off future courses and dive kit too. Dive Academy run these courses every day of the year what-ever the weather and my son wants to become an instructor now so he is working towards his Instructor Development Course in November 2013. You only have to book one day before and there is lots of information on the website and facebook. Tel: 966699088 or 648463310 www.diveacademy-santapola.com email: info@diveacademy-santapola.com

ASPETGA talks to kids about pets
Lecture to summer schools students at Colegio Hispanidad in Santa Pola
August 13, 2014 (Santa Pola) – Last Friday, representatives of the Pet Owners Association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) spoke to summer school students aged 4-9 at Colegio Hispanidad in Santa Pola about pet ownership telling the children that a pet is another member of the family to care for, to respect and to never abandon. “We believe in the importance of educating children to love and to respect animals. This way the children of today will become adults tomorrow who are sensitive to their environment something we believe guarantees a better future for all of us,” says ASPETGA President Olatz Mensua. Through a presentation based on drawings and photos, Mensua along with ASPETGA Treasurer Belma Canales and Secretary Rosa Garcia spoke about the responsibilities of having a pet. ASPETGA took the opportunity to explain to the kids that pet adoption was a big decision and spoke to them about the best way to bring an animal into the family as well as the importance of adopting and not buying animals. The children were delighted to interact with Sam, Ellioth, Dora and Sanson, four friendly rescue dogs that accompanied ASPETGA in this talk. The four have been adopted by the ASPETGA members who spoke to the group. Although the focus of lecture was responsible pet ownership, ASPETGA also spoke briefly to the children about the plight of wild animals held in captivity, such as those working in circuses or on display at zoos. ASPETGA actively works to foster responsible pet ownership and the goal of these speaking engagements is to impart these values to children. ASPETGA volunteers are available to any school in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant interested in scheduling this type of lecture. About ASPETGA The Pet Owners Association of Santa Pola and Gran Alacant (ASPETGA) or Asociación de Propietarios de Mascotas de Santa Pola y Gran Alacant is a nonprofit founded by a group of neighbours including a local veterinarian. ASPETGA works to encourage responsible pet ownership in our community by raising awareness of local regulations regarding pet ownership with a special emphasis on the collection of dog droppings. APETGA believes in peaceful coexistence between pet owning and non pet owning residents and works to create specially designated dog parks and beaches. In addition, APSETGA programs events to promote canine socialization and good citizenship, organizes competitions and games as well as charitable and fundraising events. Membership is just € 5 per family per year. To join or for more information, please visit www.aspetga.es or www.facebook.com/APETGA Regards,

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?
by Mark Etheridge
Earlier this spring it was evident that the work done by the park authorities in the Clot were resulting in a much improved environment over the poor conditions of a few years ago, with many returning and new bird species putting in an appearance. However it seemed that one of the star birds had failed to turn up.
The spectacular Purple Swamphen (Calamόn Comύn in Spanish) had bred regularly in the Clot over the years, but the low water levels have discouraged them during the past two breeding seasons, and sadly it seemed they were lost to the area. However last month, a local member of the Costa Blanca Bird Club reported a welcome re-sighting of this bird. Their stronghold is in the nearby El Hondo reserve near Elche, where there are several of these birds present, so possibly this is a younger bird looking for somewhere new away from its family to start its own territory.
Closely related to the Moorhen (black/brown bird with a red bill) and the Coot (all black with a white bill and forehead) which are easily seen on the Clot, it is larger than both – about the size of a chicken. The males are somewhat larger than the females, but are otherwise both sexes are identical. It inhabits the reed beds of the pool known as the Charco de Contacto just across the road from the Carabassi Bars. Well, it’s often a matter of luck whether one will show itself – you can spend hours in the hide without seeing one, then there is that distinctive raucous screech and one will wade through the water right in front of you, sometimes swimming in the water despite its lack of webbed feet.
The Purple Swamphen feeds mostly on vegetable matter, squeezing through the reed beds on those enormous red feet, but is also partial to the occasional egg from someone else’s nest and even young birds such as ducklings, as well as frogs and small fish. It regularly uses its feet to hold the food – usually a fresh reed root – and delicately peels away the layers with its beak reminding you of a gourmet chef peeling an onion. Although it looks ungainly and heavy, it is a strong flier, and if suitable habitat is created for it, it will move into those areas quite readily.
Here’s something for all you factoid fans – the Purple Swamphen was one of the few birds that the Romans would not eat, being regarded as a noble bird. They also believed that it was able to detect and report adultery, and for this reason many were kept in captivity. So if it squawks loudly at you when you next see one, you’ll know you’ve been rumbled! See you next month.
