We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ... Hi everybody In the little village of Biar, one hour driving form Santa Pola take place one of my favourite celebrations in the Costa Blanca. There is a special day to go there and it is on the 10th of May, If you go you will experience fiesta, tradition, music, fires, fireworks and much more. There are, of course, more parades; the programme is more or less as follows: Petrer 12th to 16th and 20rd to 22nd in Salinas. Also there is a specials events like the one held in Torrevieja 4th of May to 8th “Feria de Mayo” or in Monforte del Cid-Orito another popular pilgrimage “Romería de San Pascual”. Also “Las Cruces de Mayo” Cross of May, Crosses made with flowers in la Cruz Street in Santa Pola 29th 30 April and 1st of May and the most beautiful ones are shown in the old quarter of Alicante “Barrio la Cruz” same dates as in Santa Pola. Guide visit In English to the fishing port, fish auctions fish market and aquarium on the 19th. It’s vital to register al least one day in advance.
Bye-bye my friends ... until next month.
Hello everyone, It’s May already and the bars and restaurants are all reopening. The beach Life resort re-opened mid-April and Gran Alacant is looking good. The street cleanser is out more often, and the weeds have been removed near the church. The entrance bridge to Gran Alacant is almost finished. We had a great email from New Zealand from a Mr Paul Burgess - a native kiwi who after visiting our website has decided along with his wife to come and live here amongst us. He kindly thanked us for giving him so much information, so the GA Advertiser has definitely travelled half way round the world! Where next I wonder?! Mayka’s kitchen video recipes have also been a huge success, and I am the lucky one as I get to sample them first! I have not been disappointed yet! Well Done Mayka! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 43

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Easter Festival Who in the Town Hall decided to allow a festival in Porto Marino at Easter? Who decided it was ok to have it next to our homes? We had the week from hell. My wife after 13 year does not want to return to Spain! I will lay out the scene. Town hall employees arrived and erected a large marque right opposite our front door. Then travellers started to arrive with rides and other attractions. Notices went up stating a festival for 5 days ending at midnight each night. Did this happen? NO! The music started at 16:00 the Saturday before Easter. It ended 8 days later. But the worst thing was the music from the marque. I had to go down and tell them to stop at 00:30 hours as our doors and windows were vibrating. I received nothing but abuse. Good job I cannot speak Spanish. My neighbours had it worse as they are Spanish and had to go to work next day. One neighbour complained at 04:00 hours one morning, as he had to go to work and was rewarded with eggs
6
thrown at his front door and windows. Then after I stopped the music by being aggressive one night. I was awakened by loud music at 06:00 hours in the morning. The last time I phoned the police I was told to complain to the Town Hall as the people had a licence. This gets worse. I had my daughter and grandchildren staying and it became obvious that no toilet facilities had been provided. Persons from the marque were urinating behind the bins. In the UK this is an offence to expose yourself in public. But how would the bin collector feel with this smell. It is not fair to him. I went to the admin of fincas and was led to understand the festival was organised by a committee of residents. I would like to know who they are and where they live so I can organise one by their houses. Bet none of them live in Porto Marino. Can the Town Hall tell us who paid for the clean up?
around the road. Could the town hall bill the residents committee who organized the festival? Why should we as residents have to clean up after them? Finally, does the European court of human rights state I have a right to a peaceful family life? Santa Pola town hall does not seem to think so. At least we look forward to Fosters Hollywood opening. Why not put the new health center on the land. At least our nights will be peaceful Ken Burns Looking for a peaceful life Who allowed the above? If a bar made too much noise they would shut it down, but they are only too pleased to allow the fairground.....madness Town Hall Answer: Related to this, the event was organized by ASVEGA (a neighbors’ association) and the owner of the show enterprise, who was in charge. If there has been any discomfort or troubles,
The travellers left all their rubbish in front of our houses. Two Town Hall workers tried to clean up

all the neighbors should have called the police and put the appropriate complaints. Nevertheless, we are going to investigate the issue so as in the future there will be no discomfort due to these kind of events. In addition, regarding to the the new construction of an ambulatory in Gran Alacant, in other editions we have informed that all the administrative procedures were carried out by Loli TomĂĄs, Health Councilor, and Yolanda Seva, Mayor of Santa Pola, being approved in a formal meeting with the authorities in Valencia, at Conselleria. Q: Seats Could we have some seats provided on the 2 steepest hills in G.A? The one to the beach known as cardiac hill, also the very steep hill leading from the roundabout to the former Maxcoop. There are an abundance of seats provided along the road to G.A centre, and on the side of the flat clot road. All the money spent by Santa Pola on a 3/4 finished swimming pool (4 years left untouched) also a new bus station finished last year that is unused, surely they have a few euro's left for a few seats. Kind Regards, Ian and Irene 2 oap's that have for 10 years struggled the hills. Town Hall Answer: Your request has been transferred to the Councilor in order to study it, and, if it is possible,to
manage the seats installation. However, despite we are so glad to hear all the citizens’ suggestions in order to improve our town, all those suggestions and demands must be channeled through official ways, such as the General Register. Q: Jungle Garden Any update on Jungle garden from previous month? Town Hall Answer: Regarding to that garden, our legal services have no more information about this issue. We understand this is a public health matter, but we, as a Public Institution, must accomplish the law to the letter. Nevertheless, this is an issue which we are not going to forget. Other News: This is a lovely time of the year, not just for the weather. Bars, restaurants and all businesses are gearing themselves up for the influx of holidaymakers. This winter has seen a large amount of work taking place on our Gran Alacant. The bridge on the entrance and exit to the urbanisation has been going through amajor repair work.
The duration of the work of this phase is estimated at 4-5 weeks and includes road traffic detours to the N332. This phase, in turn, will be divided into two subphaseses. 1 - Alicante traffic direction by way of the Repsol service station. Cartagena direction will not be affected. (2 weeks) 2 - Direction to Alicante road traffic by way of service Repsol service station. Movement direction Cartagena road traffic by rail immediately to your left, i.e. occupancy lane sense Alicante. In this subphase, the incorporation into national sense Cartagena from the bridge will be closed to traffic. (3 weeks) The diversion is permanent, i.e. be mounted 24 hours until completion of the work of phase 4. ----------------The winter period has seen other highway operations taking place. The major works, which included the road around the roundabout by the post office, has been left in an awful state. Can the Town Hall assure us that this area of road will be resurfaced?
From the Department of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Francisco Soler, has reported to us in a press release, that on Monday April 18 Phase 4 of the rehabilitation project of the Gran Alacant bridge will start.

A new American style eatery is well under construction on the commercial centre next to the Burger Bar.
OP Grand Opening of new office: OP Group celebrated their 10th anniversary on the 4th April with the opening of a new revamped office at the Commercial Center and we wish them good luck for the next ten years!!! The water sports centre on the beachfront is now being installed, so there will be plenty to do for us, and holidaymakers to enjoy on the lovely Mediterranean (see front cover). Some interesting employment news from our Town Hall. In December 2015 we had 3,102 unemployed, 30 less than in November of the same year, and 148 registered unemployed less than the previous year. That’s a 1% drop on the previous month and a 5% drop on the full year. The decline in unemployment that occurred this month was similar to what had occurred in the region, the province, the autonomous region and in the whole of Spain. Doing a bit of history that allows us to place this information, we can say that the only year in this decade where unemployment declined further in Santa Pola was 2010, with 2015 just below. Hotel in Arenales: Just off Gran Alacant on the beach area at Los Arenales, the reconstruction of the hotel is well under way and should be completed by Summer 2017. Should be a real bonus for the area, to attract more holidaymakers.

¿Sucedio asi? NO!!

DENTAL DECAY
We have all heard of dental decay and cavities, but what actually causes this disease of the tooth? Dental decay (or caries) happens when the enamel and dentine of the tooth become softened by acid attack after you eat or drink anything containing sugar. Plaque is a thin sticky film that continually forms on the teeth and contains many types of bacteria. The bacteria break down sugars, releasing acid which dissolves first the enamel and eventually the softer dentine. Enamel is the very hard outer protective layer of the tooth; it contains no blood vessels or nerves and is not sensitive to pain. Dentine lies under the enamel making up most of the tooth structure and covering the soft pulp (nerve); it does contain nerve endings and can be very sensitive to pain. Every time you eat or drink anything containing sugars, the sugar reacts with bacteria in plaque and starts to softens and dissolve enamel. The attack can last for up to an hour after eating until the natural protection in saliva neutralises the acid and allow some hardening
(remineralisation) of the softened enamel. To prevent decay we should limit the number of sugary foods we have, in particular avoiding sugary snacks and drinks between meals as the number of “attacks is more of a problem than the amount consumed in one go. Rinsing your mouth or chewing sugar-free chewing gum after a meal is beneficial; however avoid brushing your teeth immediately after eating as you will be wearing away the softened enamel. Brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day to reduce plaque is important; as are regular visits to your dentist so that any early decay can be caught and treated before it reaches the pulp. Dr.Paul Saliba, British Dental Practice

HELPING PROTECT
ANIMALS IN THE NAME OF LOVE
Helping protect animals in the name of love. A non-profit equine rescue centre near Alicante has been the fortunate recipient of a significant monetary donation made in the name of love.
When Ciudad Quesada residents Isabel Sanchez and Ivan Lopez began to plan their April 29 wedding, they knew they did not want to give their guests the usual party favour that ends up forgotten in a drawer.
network of eight charity shops across the Alicante province are gratefully welcomed. A pick-up service is available to collect large donated items such as furniture and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased in-store.
Instead they generously opted to donate €500 to Rojales’ Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre on behalf of each guest – enough to feed 10 rescued horses for a month. “We like all animals and love nature,” Ivan said. “What was most important to us was that we chose a charity that really looks after their animals and uses their donations well. We appreciate how difficult it must be for the rescue centre to do their work, but believe it is completely necessary work.” Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said, “We’ve never had a donation related to a wedding before. It’s so lovely to know that a young couple thought of us when planning their wedding day. We hope they have a truly special day.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. ROADTRIP IRAN APRIL 2016
Once again we were in Iran with our paragliders. Iran, may I call it Persia, has one of the most helpful, most genuine people you will ever meet on the planet. Visiting their country, flying their hills, eating their delicious food, walking in their towns and parks, all is a constant invitation to feel good. Everywhere you go there is a helping hand, a smile, a wave, a chat, and never ever being pushy. And this for a country which has been sold for decades by the western media as the ultimate enemy state ..... We did go, for the second time in 6 months to its people, to fly our paragliders and meet the Persians.

Iran is a huge country. This time we skipped Teheran, and flew into Esfehan, and made our way to Shiraz and Yazd, to make the most of the flying in april month. In Esfehan we flew Rokh, a 2300 m high take off, from where the main XC routes are done. present record of 350 Km XC flights have been done by Iranean pilots. Shiraz, historically famous for its wine, welcomed us as the known happy town of Iran. On this trip we flew Sadra. Previous trip we flew Dasht Arjan and Kotal nearby.
in Persia, the cradle of civilization. Necropolis, Persepolis, shrine of ZaratHustra, ancient Mosques etc.etc.... We re back home now, with the wish to visit Persia again, in November 2016 it will be. Thanks to the people of Iran, for never feeling out of our comfort zone and being so welcomed and safe. Paragliding for us is our favourite way to explore new countries and meet the people. Nick, Doyouwanna
Yazd, most interesting old city flying the nearby dunes in the dessert. And in between, many visits, nature, culture, history, after all you are

The “Fiestas de las Cruces” (Festival of the Crosses) or Cruz de Mayo (May Cross) is a holiday celebrated on 3rd of May in many parts of Spain. Religiously, the festival is rooted in the search for the cross on which Jesus died, but the popular traditions connected to the festival certainly originate from pagan traditions brought to Spain by the Roman Empire. The most famous festivities are in Granada and Cordoba. If you can’t travel that far - never mind! You can enjoy the celebrations in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood in Alicante! This month we are going to make two traditional dishes served during Cruz de Mayo, one originating from Granada and the other from Cordoba.

COULD YOU HAVE DIABETES ? Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease, caused by a low level of insulin or a wrong insulin function. This kind of diabetes starts on adult age with usual family antecedents, many times in relation with obesity. As a result of that, blood sugar cannot be introduced in body cells and it increases in blood. Many people do not feel symptoms with type 2 diabetes. However, common symptoms do exist and being able to recognize them is important. The symptoms occur because some or all of the glucose stays in your blood and isn’t used as fuel for energy. Over time, high blood glucose can cause serious damage. Type 2 diabetes can be easier to miss as it develops more slowly, especially in the early stages when it can be harder to spot the symptoms. But untreated diabetes affects many major organs, including heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Being diagnosed early and controlling blood sugar levels can help to prevent these complications. Which are the initial symptoms of diabetes?. The main symptoms, which are common to both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, are: • • • • •
urinating more often than usual, particularly at night feeling very thirsty feeling very tired unexplained weight loss itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush
If you suffer one or more of those symptoms, please ask your doctor or make an appointment at our surgery. A simple blood test can confirm or rule out the disease.

Garage Door. The boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was 20 Percent down and his fly area wide open. His assistant walked up to him and said, 'This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?' The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question. As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistant's question about his 'garage door.' He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused by her desk to ask, 'When my garage door was open, did you see my Jaguar parked in there?' She smiled and said, 'No, I didn't. WATER PARK
S
tanding on the edge, looking down into the precipice, I was seized by terror. I had sworn to myself I would never get myself into this situation again, yet here I was, struggling with the irrationality of the fear. Frozen into inactivity. We left my home town of Salfword in the 1960’s to find a new life in the antipodes, taking advantage of the generosity of the Australian Government’s Assisted Package Programme, and forever taking on the title of a £10 Pom. Life in Melbourne was both physically and metaphorically, “thousands of miles from home”. Big blue skies, greenery, clean air, local beaches with a warm sea (this is Melbourne, not Salford I am describing). For school sports we went to a local swimming area on the beach comprising a large wooden, rectangular structure and platform, built out from the beach into the sea. Between the supporting pillars metal railings and fencing prevented sharks and other nasty sea creatures getting into, what was now, “A safe” swimming enclosure. My new found school chums and I immediately ran to the furthest most point of the rectangle, which was approximately 50 yards from the shore, and one by one we jumped of a short plank, which I think was meant to be a diving board, into the sea. My friends had obviously done this before and ran with gay abandon to the edge and jumped the 8-10 feet into the water. What I was to learn later, was they also timed their jump to coincide with an incoming wave and by jumping into the crest, the drop was reduced by 3-4 feet. As for me, well I just ran and jumped – into a trough, meaning

the distance I dropped was somewhere between 10-14 feet and I found myself suspended in mid-air for an eternity before I eventually hit the water with an undignified splash. The water burned as it entered the nasal cavity, and as I sunk ever deeper my lungs started to ache. What had I done? As I resurfaced, gasping for air and trying to clear my nose, I became aware of my current situation. Hadn’t the Salford City Education Committee awarded me a Certificate for my recent heroics at Pendleton Baths, when I splashed and flailed my way through 25 yards of lung bursting activity. And now I was 50 yards from the shore in, what was effectively, the open sea. I had never swum that far in my life. When my feet touched the sand on the bottom, I hauled myself out of the water and lay exhausted and frightened on the beach, and vowed “Never again would I do anything like this”. My brother in law had just returned from the first Gulf war to his barracks in Germany, and so we decided to pay him and my sister in law a visit. July in that part of Germany can get hot. Time for a picnic at the local water park, which just happened to be a festival day and holiday. It was packed. As we entered I looked around for sun loungers and somewhere to put them. My eldest boy, who is full of energy and “adventurous”, ran of, shouting, “Dad, I am going to have a look around”. “OK”, I said, “I’ll just sort out the beds for us and see you later”, whilst thinking to myself, “Good, he’ll be gone for ages, I can get a beer and a snooze in the sunshine. Anyway if I hide away, he won’t be able to find us and I can have longer”. I was putting the towels on the bed when he caught up with us. ”Dad. Dad. I have been on everything and it’s great”. We hadn’t been there more than 20 minutes and he had exhausted the entertainment. “Come on dad. I will show you”. How did I know this was coming? After a trawl of the large and small pools, we went up a wooden structure which had a Zip wire running down over a large pool. On he climbed, setting of to the end. It was my turn to grab hold of the

T ime to unwind ... two handles hanging below the trolley running on the Zip wire, and with a mighty heave I lunged forward into open air. Now I knew how to start my ride, but in the haste I hadn’t taken any notice on how to end it. At first, the buzz of the adrenalin kicked in and I didn’t give it another thought as the trolley whistled down the zip wire. Oblivious to the fact I was supposed to release my grip about 5 yards from the end, to drop cleanly into the water, I hung on until the trolley hit the buffers at the end of the run. My deceleration was instantaneous. The trolley stopped immediately, but the momentum in my lower body and legs kept me going. Still hanging on like a trapeze artist, well, someone on a trapeze, my legs flung forward until my whole body was parallel with the trip wire and the water. That’s when I let go and, from a height of about 8 feet, fell. My body, in a horizontal orientation, plummeted gracelessly to the water, smacking into it to the sheer delight of all around, who were waiting, with some sick voyeuristic pleasure, to see idiots like me hurt themselves. My skin felt like it was bursting open from my buttocks to my neck. I dragged myself out of the water to the cheers and derision of the watching voyeurs, offering the a cheery wave. If I thought my ordeal was over, I was mistaken. “Come on dad, there’s another one to go on”. And that’s how I found myself on the edge of the precipice. As we climbed up the ladder, I knew this wasn’t going to be good. At the top my son looked over the edge, took two steps back, ran forward again and jumped as far and as high as he could, disappearing out of sight below the edge of the platform. Any concerns for his safety and wellbeing had vanished some time ago as I struggled with the dawning realisation of my new predicament. Gingerly I crept to the edge of the platform and peeked over. It must have been about 100ft down to the water, well so it seemed, it was
probably no more than 12 ft. In something reminiscent of the famous Mr Bean sketch, I stood there, paralysed with fear. Memories of my time in Australia came flooding back to me. I couldn’t do it. But this was irrational. Surely fears were to be overcome, not surrendered to, but I couldn’t do it. I turned around towards the ladders I had ascended and saw the heads of two young German boys, each wearing Speedo goggles and looking like a couple of WWII Japanese fighter pilots. Their chins being about level with the platform I was on. I walked across to the steps and, looking down, saw it was occupied by a squadron of similar fighter pilots, waiting their turn. The boys at the top, looking at me, were talking to each other. “Meine mutter erzählte mir, nicht zu spät zu sein“ (“My mother told me not to be too long”) and “Ich bin froh, das ich auf sonnercreme setzen. Mein Rücken brennt“ (“I am glad I put sun cream on. My back is burning”), which I interpreted as “What’s the Britisher doing?” “I don’t know. I bet he’s scared”. At this point the band playing in the middle of the park, started up with a good cover of the Guns and Roses hit that year. The singer struggled to understand that the K in knocking is silent and sang a good cover of Ker Nocking on Heaven’s Door. Ker nock, Ker nock, ker nocking on heaven’s door he sang as I thought they had singled me out at that precise moment. On jittery legs, I walked back to the Japanese fighter pilots, with the intentions of excusing myself and climbing back down the ladder. As I looked down, 20 pairs of Speedos looked up at me in mild irritation. It was then I understood, I could not humiliate myself, nor the British nation as a whole, by going down the ladder, past the eagerly awaiting German boys. For the sake of British pride I turned around and running as fast as I could, jumped far and high into the void. “Geronimoooooooooo”

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
NEW PETS REGULATION The new Comunidad Valenciana Government launched a new regulation for companion animals, which was published at DOGV last 12-03-16. This new law explains, for example, how antirabies vaccination has to be done at this area. These legal modifications don’t affect in any way import-export, travel regulations nor Pet Travel Scheme. As a matter of fact, pets with EU passport which travel regularly, are not affected for this new regulation since they already have had everything done for crossing the border. The new regulation also affects Vet Practices, which are obliged to inform Local Government about the appearing of certain diseases. What is new in this regulation? Rabies inoculation becomes mandatory for cats and ferrets, even if they are not going to cross the border (remember in the past it was mandatory for every dog, and for cats and ferrets which were going to cross the border). So every dog, cat and ferret older than 16 weeks, must be vaccinated against rabies. Then, they must have a new injection when they are 1 year old, and then, as often as the vaccine manufacturer recommends. Dogs cats and ferrets must have a tapeworm treatment at least once a year (remember in the past you were obliged to deworm the pet only if you took it to certain EU countries). Microchipping cats and ferrets which are not going to cross the border keeps remaining optional, but they must have an official Valencian vaccination book (NOT a passport), signed by a Vet. Do I have to have my pets under this regulation if I just came to this area on holidays for a short time? Every dog, cat or ferret which is going to stay longer than 3 months in Comunidad Valenciana is affected by this new regulation. We must remark that, if
80
you brought a Pet from the UK, since microchipping, rabies, passport and tapeworm treatment is mandatory for coming, your pet is automatically “legal” here, so, if that is your case, there is absolutely nothing additional to do. How long does rabies vaccination last for? This is probably the “million dollar question”, so we are going to try to answer it definitively. What both Spanish and Valencian laws say is: RABIES INJECTION WILL LAST FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME THE VACCINE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDS AT THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE. This means, if the manufacturer declares the vaccine is valid for 2 or 3 years, the vaccine must be renewed every 2 or 3 years. Well, after investigating the instructions for use of all the rabies vaccines we know, we can say that NO ONE OF THEM GUARANTEES AN ACCEPTABLE IMMUNIZATION FOR LONGER THAN ONE YEAR, so according to the law, RABIES INJECTION MUST BE RENEWED EVERY YEAR. So, as you can see, inoculating every 3 years as they do at the UK, is not a good idea at all, since rabies is the most dangerous zoonosis and rabies inoculation is the cheapest vaccine. About tapeworm treatment, it must be done at least once a year. This implies nothing new in case of dogs, because we always provide some tapeworm pills free with the annual rabies injection, and most dog owners deworm them every 3 months (or every month for covering heartworm). In case of cats, they owners don’t use to deworm then so often, anyway, apart from what the law says, it’s a good idea to deworm the cat (or ferret) previous to any inoculation. The intention of this law is to keep this area free of rabies and to prevent the transmission to humans of the terrible hydatid cysts. For some extra info, ask your Vet.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT?
T
by Mark Etheridge
here is a good reason why all the pathways in the Clot are set out so clearly, and the wild areas are barriered off – these places contain some of the most vulnerable and endangered species in our corner of Spain. The reserve owners (Elche Council) have to carefully balance the needs of nature against the wishes of the people to be able to wander freely in the Clot, and by and large they have made a successful go of it, with humans and nature co-existing mostly in a beneficial way to the benefit of both. It does mean, however, that there are one or two more specialised creatures that you might not be able to see, due to their very specific lifestyles.- so here's one which does occur in the Clot, but only in the dense reedbeds in the centre of the reserve. Say Hello to the Bearded Tit. Now this is one of those British bird names which is completely wrong – if you look closely, you can see that it is not bearded at all, but the black facial markings look more like a moustache. Spanish birders agree, hence the Spanish name “Bigotudo” which means moustached or bewhiskered. Also, it's not a member of the Tit family at all, and the correct English name is Bearded Reedling, but most birders still refer to it by the original name. This colourful and engaging little bird feeds on insects and reed seeds, and nests deep in the reeds, but if you are lucky you might catch a flock of them flying overhead, as they occasionally disperse in a group to find new breeding sites. They have a distinctive “zing” call which they repeat excitedly when flocking, and also as a contact note when foraging through the reeds. I'll be honest and say that the bird in my picture wasn't taken in the Clot, but in the nearby large reserve at El Hondo,

where there are hides built deep into the reedbeds. They are worth a visit (if you can put up with the clouds of mozzies which infest the place in high summer), as Bearded Tits are relatively easy to see there. I have heard them in the Clot, and had very distant sightings, but until someone in authority decides that a reedbed hide might be a good idea, a glimpse is the best you can expect. My picture is of a male bird – the females are somewhat duller and without the distinctive moustache. These birds occur in the UK, but are very susceptible to cold weather, and British populations are decimated during hard winters. Of course we don't have that problem here, so although they might be difficult to see, rest assured that there is a thriving population in our area. You can see more photos of birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.

BREXIT VOTE 23RD JUNE 2016
M
uch has been put into the public domain by politicians, the press, social media etc on how the “in or out” vote will affect us expats. The truth is that none of us actually know, we can only make assumption on the facts as we know them. The facts are that if the vote on the 23rd June is a vote to stay in it will be potentially business as usual. If it’s a vote to exit the EU then potentially there may be future changes that will affect all of us expats but not for a further two years, this is the time period given to the UK by Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty to negotiate agreements with the remaining 27 members of the EU. The negotiations will be long and contentious and an extension beyond two years might well be needed, but any one of the 27 could block that if it didn’t get its own way on its own priorities. If after two years there is no agreement to extend, all current EU treaties that apply to the UK that have not been renegotiated will cease.

In recent reply to a letter of concern from an expat the RT Hon Dame Margaret Beckett MP stated it seems likely, therefore, that any “out” vote would result in years, possible more than 10 years of uncertainty, with no automatic rights for expats to rights and benefits that they currently enjoy. Over the last few weeks I have asked many Expats how they will cast their vote “in” or “out, the majority have stated they will vote to stay in. When asked how they would vote if they lived in the UK, a majority would vote to exit the EU, draw your own conclusions Go to http://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and register, with the recent polls showing both camps neck and neck don’t waste your vote If you wish to discuss a review of your existing pensions and investments please contact me on 647 681 974 / 965 994 855 or terryexpatpensions@terra.com Next Month: Complex adviser charges and expensive pensions
