We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. This month there’re more parades of Moors and Christians, in Benidorm on the 29th to 2nd, in Crevillent on the 1st to 4th, in Rafal, Planes, Callosa d’en Sarria on the 8th and 9th, in Campello on the 12th and in Calpe on the 14th to 16th. There are also local fiestas in Jalon, Polop or pilgrimages like the well-known one in Benejuzar “el Pilar” which takes place on the 12th . In Cocentaina from 29th October to the 1st of November the oldest street fair in Valencia Region will take place. Bye-bye my friends ... until next month
Hello Everyone, Hope you all had a good summer. As we enter autumn it’s predicted to be warmer than usual so still in shorts for now. Also, there is a new road being laid near the dog park, at the moment it seems any space around Gran Alacant is getting attention. Construction in Spain is the highest it’s been for a long time and Alicante airport will easily reach its target of 12 million passengers for the year - not bad considering the number of strikes the French and Spanish air controllers have each year - just think what it would be!
Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 23

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q:GRAN ALACANT ROADSIGNS Hi Ged & Lou, This is my first time writing to you although I read the magazine online every month without fail. I bought an apartment in GA 2.5 yrs ago which I rent out during the summer and visit regularly during the rest of the year. I have just come back from La Marina market which I visited for a change of scene and could not help noticing the difference in signage for the 2 towns from the N332. Heading south on the main road La Marina has clear signs and even its own lane to leave the road. Compare that to GA when coming from the airport!! No name, just a sign to urbanisations with no mention of Gran Alacant at all! It does raise the question of how new visitors arriving from the airport ever find us! Even the other way the word 'urbanization' is put above the name Gran Alacant on the one sign into the town. Exactly how big and how old does a town have to be to warrant being signposted properly in Spain? It is great to see the whole place buzzing in Sept despite being almost impossible to find! Peter Sichel David, the writer is right. Gran Alacant is not signposted from the airport at all and most of the first time visitors don’t know to turn off to Santa Pola and follow the signs for “Alacant” ending up in Alicante! Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this matter, it is true that there is a lack of road signs about Gran Alacant on the N-332. But this issue iits cause in the fact that it is not possible to set up a sign with Gran Alacant written, because we must remember that Gran

Alacant is within the municipal term of Santa Pola. However, the idea of setting up more signs about Gran Alacant, such as Santa Pola (Gran Alacant) is now being transferred to the Alcaldesa, who has the competences related to traffic, in order to have the possibility studied by the proper technician. Furthermore, there is no specific regulation about the time or even the size related to the word urbanization or town. Maybe the most accurate term for Gran Alacant is not Urbanization but Quarter, or even District. Q: LIFEGUARD Together with friends I regularly use the beach in front of the little chapel but it is out of view of any life guards and their flags. It has become a popular beach and surely warrants a life guard presence? I appreciate that it is too late for this season but could you please make the request for us, which I hope will put the wheels in motion in time for next year's season? Thanking you in anticipation of your help. Kind Regards, A Happy Gran "Alacanter" Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this issue, the beach which is mentioned is placed in the municipal term of Elche (not Santa Pola), so I encourage you to transfer your proposal to the Elche City Hall. Despite of this, I am going to send the proposal to the Beach

Department so as they can discuss that matter with Elche City Hall.
suggestions above. This is done elsewhere in Spain.
Q:SANTA POLA’S ESPLANADE CAR PARK Dear Sirs, The splendid new Esplanade at the Marina in Santa Pola is a delight. So are the bars, cafés, shops, etc. Congratulations to all involved with this part of the development.
The Council should facilitate a turnover of parking spaces for visitors to the Esplanade and the Marina. This will accommodate local people who live in outer Santa Pola and Gran Alacant who just cannot get short-term parking during July and August. It will encourage more customers to bring trade and prosperity to the businesses.
The adjacent Car Park is not such a delight. Apart from the expensive Pay to Park section owned by the Yacht Club: Why was this car park provided? - Is it a free long term car park? - Is it there to provide free parking for the residents of the neighbouring apartments? - Is it there to provide free parking for those who come to spend the summer months in their second homes? There are cars in it covered in dust and which don’t move during the summer months. There is at least one vehicle with a protection cover tied over it and that’s not for an overnight stay! Or is the car park there to provide convenient turn-over parking for those coming to the Esplanade, bringing business and prosperity to the traders via available visitor and customer parking spaces?
Council must decide: Is it a free longterm car park or not? Ian Hunter Town Hall Answer: The parking which you mention is a public one, so if you notice (or anyone else) that there are cars which are parked there for a long period of time you can complain at the Town Hall or at the Police Station, in order to activate the protocol for the abandoned cars on public streets. Q: RUBBISH Hi Ged & Lou, I am pleased they have actually removed the rubbish below the allotments, but what about the rubbish I reported and photographed several months ago? Why did they not remove that at the same time? It would have taken 2 people and about 30 minutes time? Please ask them why this rubbish still remains!
I want to suggest this latter is the case. It is not a free longterm car park. I urge Santa Pola Council to implement a system similar to that recently introduced at the Airport’s Departures Level: have a ticket machine, take a ticket on entry for Pay and Display; allow two hours free parking; after this free period, start charging the same as the Yacht Club does in its pay section of the cark park, 3€ per hour. The Council might consider having a small zone, a very small zone, for longterm free parking to co-exist alongside the
What I would like to suggest to the council is maybe it would be more beneficial to Gran Alacant and its resident who care, is for the council to take further interest by maybe monthly sending someone to inspect areas known for rubbish dumping

to see what is developing, if rubbish is still been dumped, they could then remove the rubbish before it builds up to a massive pile. This would help keep Gran Alacant a cleaner rubbish free area. Unfortunately the council only do half a job, so I am careful not to tell them how wonderful they are. One other thing too, after many roads especially opposite the school area have been resurfaced, I know it is a different matter re the Urbanisation and the roads were bad. But come on I have complained and been promised, although it was Loreta who made the promise, that this would be resurfaced. Surley it would have been cheaper to have made the repairs at the same time as the other roads in the area whilst the machinery was all there. It is a counsel owned road not the urbanisation road and it is very bad. Regards Bill ( Calle Malta)
great to be able to keep up to date with the online magazine though! Great Work! Muchas Gracias! Regards, Helen Town Hall Answer: This is a very hot issue, because the area in which the golf course was planned to be was going to be urbanized by a company which has not accomplished the established terms in the contract. So, for the moment, the golf course is frozen. OTHER NEWS: (Bits of news supplied by Barry) Pictures show the further expansion of the Gran Alacant school. The chances of getting a new school seem to be getting slimmer, so each year we seem to get more and more temporary classrooms.
Town Hall Answer: As far as we can remember, that complaint about rubish was transferred to the Infrastructure Department by me, but, since it has not been removed, I am going to take this matter again into account in order to solve it once and for all. About the promised, made by Loreto Cascales, about resurfacing the road opposite the School, the current government team cannot be blamed about that. However, a municipal resurfacing plan was set up last month, so as all the deficient roads can be municipally resurfaced. Nevertheless, it is a plan which involves all the municipal term of Santa Pola, and our technicians consider that there are other roads which need to be resurface faster than that you mention in your complaint. Q: Golf Course Hi there! I am wondering if the proposed golf course is a step closer to being a reality? It seems a long time ago now since this was first muted... Can't wait to return to GA next month! It's

Also a neighbour just stopped me and asked if they had been done. I think they have, the old locked out of the house need money for the locksmith, trick. 36 euro. Be careful. My neighbour took photographs of his car, so will get it, with the registration, to the police. This was down the hill on Polonia. We have always been told by the Town Hall that NOBODY is authorised to come to your house asking for money. Anyone who does, is a crook.

Remember in a few issues back, on the N332 out of Santa Pola towards La Marina, we asked where the black bull sign had gone to, as it had been a permanent feature there, for many years. Well, its back, as our picture shows. We hope that to stop it being graffiti’d yet again, it has either been repainted with special paint, or fitted with a camera.
Supermarket trolleys are very expensive, so why is it, shoppers STEAL them and take their shopping home and then dump the trolleys by the rubbish bins.
WHY ??? If there is anything that makes you wonder “why” please let us know!!! Salt harvested from the Santa Pola salt lakes is taking place and there is now a mountain of salt for exporting.
This picture shows how awful the Gran Alacant sign, on the approach to the urbanisation, has deteriorated recently. Please can we have a new one! If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please e-mail: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

PLAZA MAYOR SPANISH HORSE RESCUE CENTRE LAUNCHES HANDS-ON EQUINE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
"A lot of people need the experience that only a place like us can offer, because they may want to work with animals but need practical knowledge before they can apply for jobs,” Sue said. “We have many horses, ponies and donkeys here with specialist medical needs, some of which are rarely seen in other stable yards, so this really is a unique chance to gain knowledge while working for a good cause.”
A Spanish horse rescue centre is offering the chance to live and work at its bustling Costa Blanca stable yard as part of a new hands-on equine internship program, launched this month. During the eight-week Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre internship, selected participants will be invited to help care for more than 90 rescued equines, going deeper than being a tourist to make a positive difference at the frontline of animal welfare in Spain. Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding said the non-profit rescue centre – located south of Alicante near the township of Rojales – would accept a maximum of just four interns at once, who will be guided through a comprehensive eight-week work and study program designed to teach crucial equine handling and care skills. A key focus will be caring for horses, ponies and donkeys with complex medical and psychological needs as a result of past abuse and neglect. Interns will be paired one-on-one with a special-needs horse and taught how to develop a mutually trusting relationship. The program also covers basic veterinary skills, equine facility management, nonprofit fundraising strategies and key animal welfare issues. An optional four-week extension offers the chance to progress to riding, after building a solid relationship with a horse.
16
Interns who successfully complete the base eight-week program will be awarded certificates and a professional letter of recommendation. Equine experience is not essential and Spanish language skills are not compulsory, as rescue centre management staff largely communicate in English. Sue said interns would greatly contribute to Easy Horse Care’s future stability, both by lending a hand with day-to-day equine care and bringing in crucial funds to support facility upgrades. "We are very excited about this program because we think it may help solve some of our ongoing problems with manpower, while bringing in fresh new people and ideas, which will make a huge difference to what we are able to achieve here at the centre,” Sue said. “We urge anyone who is interested in taking part to visit our website, download our comprehensive information pack for further details, and apply.” The eight-week internship costs €800, including simple shared accommodation at the rescue centre and basic weekly food supplies. The fee helps cover the program’s running costs and acts as a donation to help Easy Horse Care continue its vital animal welfare work. For full program details, including the information pack and application form, visit easyhorsecare.net/how-to-help/intern.

Chatter BOTTOM LINE The cost of living has been high up on my agenda this month. My partner recently left Gran Alacant for his home, Australia, for six months. He is returning to a Country he hasn’t seen in twenty years; the employment opportunities, in Spain, just, aren’t superlative. I was aware that Spain has and continues to suffer from a sluggish economy; unemployment is high, especially among the young. These were all factors to take into account, before we decided to, move to The Costa Blanca. I am only forty five years old; have at least twenty years of work left in me and want to use my skills to forge a new career. Spain offers a life style, that many people from the UK aspire too. Who wouldn’t want to live in such a beautiful, enticing, Country, with fantastic weather, culture, history and people. As a non Spanish speaker, it is hard to sustain this regime, without, access to sufficient funds or a job, that pays well enough. I have met many similar people in my position, since moving to Spain. My partner is returning home to earn money to pay for our residence in GA; he is not an exception. My closest friends in Gran Alacant, Katie and Andy are also wrestling with a similar dilemma. They want their young daughter to grow up here and all the advantages that go with it, but it remains difficult for Andy to find suitable employment commensurate with his skills and experience, to create financial security. Andy has returned home, to England, for a period, flying back to spend time with his family, when able to do so. I am personally looking forward to the new challenges ahead. My Grandfather was a Merchant Seaman, so I am well

aware of families having to live apart for long periods of time. My Grandmother did it, so can I! The costs involved in living in Spain, are much smaller than that of the UK. Rental property prices, remain low at around a third of the UK average. Similarly the Spanish equivalent of Council Tax, The Suma, is a tiny proportion of what we pay in Britain. Water rates, which are all metered here, are also substantially lower. In fact I pay in two months, what I would pay monthly in The UK. The only utility that remains greater is electricity. Grocery shopping was my hot topic for discussion, also. I wanted to know where the best place to shop for groceries was. There are quite a few large hypermarkets dotted around the Costa Blanca region, within driving distance; for the purpose of this article, I wanted to stick to Gran Alacant. This area is serviced by Lidl, Mercadona and Consum, the major supermarkets in the catchment area. There are many other smaller shops, including Unide and Quicksave, who cater, quite well for Spanish and Expat needs alike. The prices vary widely. Unlike the UK there are very few special offers and supermarkets do not compete against one another. The opinions of people, who I asked, as to their preferences, on where to shop, varied dramatically, as I am sure it would wherever I asked the question. Gran Alacant is a price perceptive place. I myself have become very frugal about the way I shop, also the way I cook, wasting nothing. In the UK, I was always throwing food away. Here I don’t, not one thing. I freeze food that I don’t eat, and shop very economically. I have learned to shop as the Spanish do. In the UK I used to spend about 160€ a week on shopping, today, in Gran Alacant I spend no more than 60€. That is a huge drop, a massive saving. The

combination of lower prices, less choice and fewer junk food items, has allowed me to do what I never could in Britain; shop within my means. I was persuaded to go to Mercadona for my weekly shop, during the last couple of weeks. Usually I shop at Lidl; it is so much cheaper. I have always assumed so at least. Well I have to say I spent double in the Spanish supermarket and bought nothing out of the ordinary. I will be shopping at Lidl again in future. I spoke to someone I know, who has a second home in Gran Alacant, I always respect her opinions; she is a great cook who understands local customs and habits; she suggested going to Alicante meat market, with prices significantly lower. There are of course markets all over this region. All offering locally produced goods at a fraction of shop prices. However you shop here, it will be incontrovertibly cheaper. Shopping around is key, as one used to, when I was but a lad! Taking my two cats to the local vets, was also unquestionably cheaper. Probably half as much. The standard of service does vary, but on the whole I was pleased with the outcome! From petrol stations, alcoholic beverages, eating out and Hospital bills, ones expenditure and overheads remain significantly lower! We no longer live in an age of cheap consumables. For countries like the UK, where shopping habits are very different to the mediterranean, the pinch in ones pocket is felt most. The way one shops determines many things. Spain does promote a healthy diet encompassing fresh fruit and vegetables daily. Children are encouraged to lead healthy lifestyles. I myself walk to the shops far more often than I did in the UK and I do have money in my pocket at the end of each week. I rarely venture into the large shopping
complexes out here, preferring to shop locally and stay within my weekly budget. The cost of living continues to grow, ever upwards, as societies shopping behaviour changes. People demand more and more disposable items; Britain is a prime example of this. Spain still shops along traditional lines, as I am beginning to also. It works; you truly do save money, in price conscious times, especially in Spain, who’s economy has a long way to go, in order to recover from the biggest slump since the second world war. As always, I take advice from the locals, without exception and thus far, they have been right. Local knowledge is key to success, in difficult circumstances; they haven’t let me down. So there we have it; Not a scientific study, into the cost of living in Gran Alacant, but observances from a fledgling apprentice, relatively unaccustomed to Spanish ways. If there ever was a reason the move to Spain, the costs of living is a big deciding factor. As a pensioner, your income goes much further, as an individual, you spend a lot less, as a consumer you do have less choice, but how much choice does one realistically need. Providing you follow the rule of buying locally produced food, seasonally sold, avoid the larger shopping malls and procure groceries and staples from reputable markets, you really can’t fail. It is kind of like going back in time, to an altogether less complex era. To me that feels right. After many years of waste and over production, large western countries could learn much from Spain’s traditional stance on ‘shopping’. This is one place you can keep expenses to a minimum and I know, as time goes on, I will further learn, to be even more meticulous with the cost of living here. It really does feel good saving money, cutting budgets and changing ones lifestyle to suit the new challenges ahead!

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Reina Sofia Park
Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 6 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month I wanted to share our love for a place called Reina Sofia Park which is in Guardamar, just a short 25 minute drive away, heading South along the N332. We have visited this amazing park many times over the years and have always had lots of fun. Nestling under the large canopy of trees, which keeps you cool even on the hottest days, we enjoy walking around the park, feeding the various ducks, swans, geese, peacocks/peahens and sometimes even get up close and personal with the red squirrels. We also enjoy watching the Koi, goldfish and terrapins swimming around in the ponds. As well as enjoying the wildlife, there is also a very large play area which has playhouses, a zip-line, climbing frames and the usual slides and swings. Ashlee and her friends always have a great time playing here and burning up some of their seemingly endless amounts of energy!!!! Some days we have taken a picnic with us to enjoy whilst sitting at one of the picnic areas in the park and on other days we have walked a little way to the beach where there are some lovely restaurants serving a more traditional Spanish “Menu del Dia”. Located opposite this park is another park called Parque Alfonso XIII. Ashlee really enjoyed riding along on her scooter through the trees and we followed the path until we ended up at the beach. There are lots of different routes you can take and as it is fairly level it makes for a lovely stroll or scoot or bike ride. OK well that’s it for this month, we hope you enjoyed this article and look forward to sharing another fun place with you all next month. Star and Ashlee xxx

metal denture. As plastic does not transmit heat; warm food can taste far more bland with plastic dentures.
s a dentist I will always try to save a tooth whenever possible. Nevertheless there are times when this is not possible and teeth do have to be removed. A gap in the dentition can be unsightly (with anterior teeth) and also upset the occlusion making chewing food difficult and possibly causing other problems such as headaches and mandibular joint pain. It is possible to replace teeth with either removable (dentures) or fixed appliances (bridges or implants).
Metal based dentures can be used in most cases but are particularly advantageous where there are several teeth still present. They are usually designed to grip the existing teeth and can be far smaller and less intrusive than acrylic dentures. They are less likely to break although the teeth and gums are still plastic (not many people would like metal teeth) and this part can be vulnerable.
A
Dentures can be of three main materials: all Acrylic (plastic), Metal-framed or Flexible (a relatively new addition). When all or most of the teeth in an arch are missing, acrylic is the most commonly used material. It has the advantage of being light, easy to adjust and relatively cheap. Its disadvantage is that it is not as strong as metal thus more likely to break and needs to be thicker than the equivalent
42
Flexible dentures are constructed of a form of acrylic with rubber-like properties. They are very comfortable; stay fixed in the mouth without the need of metal clasps and can be smaller than conventional acrylic dentures. Whether you need dentures for the first time or are seeking a replacement for an old set make sure you ask your dentist to discuss the various options available. I will discuss fixed replacement solutions in a future article.

The 13th of September was a night of all nights when our very own Jimmy Mac returned from his home town in Scotland to perform for the M.A.B.S. cancer support group in the American Rock Bar in Gran Alacant. Oh what a night as the GA Centre rocked the night away to all the good songs that were ever written. Krazy Kev and Burnard Bates did a few songs while Jimmy had a wee break. The dance floor was never short of dancers. Bet some feet are acheching today, mine are! Margaret Smith sold raffle tickets and Don and Ann from Phoenix restaurant provided a meal voucher. Mary Flannigan from Oceans donated wine and other gifts were donated from supporters of Gran Alacant Hospice Fund. After performing fees the amount raised was 798€. We are always short of Raffle prizes so if you have any unwanted gifts or bottles we would be thankful. This week alone I will be doing three raffles and struggling to find nice things to raffle.
Thank you everyone who supported us and Jimmy Mac. Without your support we will not be able to reach our goal for a hospice in Gran Alacant. Jimmy Mac Hurry back. Thanks everyone, Jean Reiterbund

CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS
Tel: 966 698 569
Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
In human medicine, the biggest part of medical expenses are caused by chronic treatments, and most patients in hospitals are decompensated chronic patients.
Leishmaniasis, another typical chronic process: 2-3 months after finishing the cycle of injections, it looks like the dog is back to normal since it has recovered its normal weight and attitude, so in some cases, the owner stops the complementary treatment consisting on tablets, which makes that, sooner or later, a new cycle of injections will be required. In some other pathologies such as diabetes, urinary incontinence or skin allergies, quitting the treatment is less common, since a few days without it makes the symptoms re-appear brutally. We consider a chronic patient needs a complete check twice a year minimum.
In some sense, modern Veterinary science is very similar to human medicine: thanks to vaccines, good pet food, and responsible owners who walk their dogs on the lead, most pathologies we see daily at the practice are chronic processes. Not a long time ago, the most common emergencies were car accidents, bites and poisonings. Fortunately, nowadays these accidents are less and less common. The biggest part of our patients are chronic ones, showing cardiac, immunological, hormonal and articular problems. These pets usually need long term treatments, even for life in some cases. Most owners understand perfectly what a chronic treatment implies, but it’s relatively common that, as time goes by, they get “relaxed” about following strictly the treatment. The lack of compliance of the instructions given by the Vet is the most common cause of failure of the treatment.
Another common mistake is to think that the pattern and the dosage of the treatment will not vary at all. Whatever the pathology is, sooner or later, depending (or not) to the answer of the patient, the Vet will increase or decrease the dosage, or will stop the treatment. The process may last for life, but the treatment may not. A good example could be osteoarthritis: if a pet suffers a serious articular problem and the subsequent pain makes it have difficulties for walking and moving, the very first thing is to treat the pain, make it loose weight and adapt its daily routine to the new condition. Probably the animal will need a big amount of painkillers at the first stages, but if we can manage to make it loose enough weight, in some cases we will be able even to stop the painkillers, despite the osteoarthritis will be there for life. It’s a common sense matter not to start or stop a treatment without asking the Vet first.
The most common mistakes are:
The Vet must prescribe the minimum quantity of medicines which is necessary for controlling the problem, otherwise pet’s health (and owner’s pocket), will suffer.
CHRONIC TREATMENTS
After finishing the first box of pills, the owner believes the treatment is over, so the pet is not brought back to the practice for a check. This is specially frequent in cardiac pathologies, since the owner is unable to see a negative evolution (except when the animal starts coughing again), so it looks like the animal got rid of the problem. Something similar happens with
84
Chronic problems may be very frustrating for the owner, and they may reduce dramatically the quality of life of the animal. For this reason (pet’s welfare), a good communication between Vet and owner is crucial.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
PLAIN TIGER
S
o that's the summer over, many visitors both human and avian are disappearing, and life settles down to the mellow fruitfulness of autumn. You might think that all the colourful animals are now gone and all you might see from now on are a few drab-looking birds in their winter plumages – but you'd be wrong. One of the most colourful of the Spanish butterflies appears in large numbers through September and October here in Spain, many of them lingering on until early December. Not quite as iconic as the spectacular Swallowtail, which is the one most people think of when you mention a butterfly, this is the Plain Tiger butterfly, also known as the African Monarch. It is a medium-sized butterfly, about the same size as the very familiar Red Admiral, and in some years can be found here in quite huge numbers. It is too early to predict if we will have one of those memorable years, but Plain Tigers have been frequent in our area throughout this summer, so the signs are good. As the Monarch name might suggest, it is widespread in Africa, but it is also found throughout the southern Mediterranean area across to the Middle East and India, and extending as far east as Australia. Within this range, it is a quite common species. You may think that being so brightly

coloured and obvious in its flight, it would be easy prey for many birds and mammals, but you'd be wrong. Just like the wasp, its bright colours act as a warning to predators to keep away. The caterpillar lives on various types of poisonous plants, accumulating different types of alkaloids in its body which cause vomiting in any attacker inexperienced enough to take it on. One of the good things about this is, if you have a reasonably good camera, they are fairly easy to photograph as they tend to ignore you as a potential predator! Considering the numbers that can now be found in Spain, it is surprising to learn that the Plain Tiger is a fairly recent arrival to Iberia, and part of this colonisation is due to the widespread introduction of various types of Milkweed plants from North America; firstly bought by gardeners and then spreading out into the wild. The Plain Tiger caterpillar flourishes on these plants, but once it has become an adult butterfly it ranges widely in search of warmer climes as the winter approaches. There has only been one record of it occurring naturally in the UK, in Cambridgeshire during 2011, although it is kept in private butterfly house collections such as the one at Kew Gardens. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
