hile completing Scope last night I took a break down

by the lake. Not a sound could be heard except for the splatter of the fountain and the whirring of the South Tower aircon. Bond’s a strange place: so busy during the day; so peaceful at night. It’s deceptive.

Only three weeks ago the last semester finished, and already the new semester has begun. Old faces were replaced with new; so many now that the Bra is unrecognisable to me. Friends moved off campus, some are graduating, and some are just getting on with their lives. Even as a fifth semester student the change is noticeable. Bond moves on, and if you stand still for just a moment you are left behind. This week is the 25th Anniversary of Bond’s foundation. The week’s events are an opportunity to not only remember where Bond’s been, but a chance for alumni and current students alike to reflect on where they’d like to go. A close friend said to me not too long ago Bond is a place where ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know.’ And I’d suggest to those of you who are freshman Bond isn’t just a place for academic enlightenment, but a school of life.

Take time this week to stop and reflect on where you’ve come from, but also what you are a part of and where you are going. It’s clichéd, but true, that you only get out what you put in. This week attend as many of the events as you can; next week, when it’s Club Sign-on Day sign up to as much as you can; and, when BUSA and FSA elections come around put your name forward. Bond will make sure you can be as great as you can be, but only if you step up to do so. Scope Magazine too will have a new beginning this semester. Since its inception in the current form five years ago, Scope has been a weekly. But no longer. Scope is consolidating its reach, and expanding its content to deliver to you all a stronger and more engaging monthly magazine. Like any reform this may be a shock, but I trust this new direction will be as exciting for you as it will be for me developing it.

I look forward to meeting many new faces over this semester, and catching up with some older ones. Unlike most semesters we have the chance to honour the past, and build the future starting with the 25th Anniversary week and I hope each and every one of you does exactly that. I welcome all the freshers who’ve just begun, and welcome back the rest of you. Get excited for the semester ahead and party hard (just not too hard).

MADAME

PRESIDENT Bondies,

Welcome back for semester 142! The May semester is typically known for being quieter with a smaller cohort, but this semester is set to be as big as ever. We’re kicking off with 25th Anniversary celebrations this week and we hope you’re all able to join us to celebrate Bond’s Foundation Day on the Ornamental Lawns this Thursday afternoon and evening. The afternoon will launch with the Faculty Student Associations competing to take out this year’s prize for the boat races before a staff and student volleyball competition. We hope to see you all down there for the International Food Fest and Fresher Fest in the marquee that evening. For our newer students, the Bond University Student Association (BUSA) is here to support your student experience in recreation, sport, education and administration. We host a variety of events and facilitate our student clubs and societies. At last count, we had over 90 student-led associations, clubs and societies. This semester our Club Sign-On Day will be next Friday May 23 (Week 2) and all of our clubs will set up on the Ornamental Lawns from 11am-1pm. This week I’m incredibly excited for our 25th Anniversary Pub Crawl this Friday night. To celebrate Bond’s 25th anniversary, we’re inviting alumni back to celebrate with students at a licensed venue tour across the Gold Coast. The tour will commence at Don’s Tavern at 5pm before we make our way to One50 Public House, Sin City, Vanity, Cocktails and Dreams and Melba’s, our sponsor nightclub for the semester. This semester we have multiple t-shirt designs and you can choose from one of four past t-shirt designs from 1994, 2001, 2008 and 2014. Tickets are online at www. 4 | scope

trybooking.com/EXCE or under the Arch from 10am2pm every day until sold out. We only have one crawl this semester so get in quick! There are still some tickets remaining for the 25th Anniversary Gala Ball on Saturday and we’d love to see as many students there as possible. You can purchase tickets at the special student price of $180 by visiting the Alumni and Development Office located under the MLC, or by calling 5595 4403. Tickets can be charged to your student account which can be paid off at the end of this semester. Whether it’s your first semester or your last, I hope you enjoy everything that Bond has to offer. You can email me anytime at president.busa@bond.edu.au, and the BUSA committee would love to help with any queries – just send us an email with general enquiries at busa@bond. edu.au, give us a call on 5595 4009 from 9am-4pm on weekdays, or drop into our office.
