GET YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS

COMMUNICATION MAJORS

If you love working with people, a degree in communication is a great place to start. Whether it’s conflict resolution in the community, corporate negotiations, communicating through the mass media via public relations and advertising, or working with the latest multimedia technologies, Bond University will give you all the tools you need to bring your ambition to life.

Advertising Advertising is the creation and delivery of specific messages by appealing to an audience visually, experientially and textually. The field incorporates creative design, copy writing, market analysis, media selection and account management. The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences course focuses on advertising as not just a small component of a broad-based communication degree but as its own specialist area.

Studies in communication offer a broad set of skills that can be adapted to a wide range of careers in almost every industry sector you can imagine. At the heart of it all, communication is about engaging people, getting your message across and understanding the messages of others. This is seen in many fields, including the rapidly expanding interactive entertainment industry, advertising and public relations organisations or in television, newspapers and radio. It could be in a corporate or legal setting, negotiating contracts or managing human resources. It could be in a government department devising new social policies, or it could be promoting the latest computer games. The range and flexibility of Bond’s communication degrees gives you the opportunity to explore all of these options and more. You can tailor a broad-based communication qualification by selecting one or two majors in a specific area of interest or major in communication as part of other degrees.

Students will be introduced to the foundations of advertising and will become proficient in the utilisation of core principles in advertising practice. This knowledge becomes the foundation for more advanced processes including campaign research strategies, direct response, creative processes, media strategies (including the interactive environment) and advertising in the global marketplace. Students will have a comprehensive understanding of integrated marketing communications and advertising’s role in the communication process through interactive tasks. These include the preparation of case studies, developing entire advertising campaigns, engaging with commercial clients and the opportunity to speak with industry professionals. Students actively engage in marketing communication challenges. They research markets, devise strategies, plan tactics and make competitive team pitches to real clients.

Our graduates are now working with leading advertising agencies, as award-winning investigative journalists, in public relations consultancies, marketing roles and more. The first hand experience, industry contacts and practical knowledge graduates gained at Bond put them way ahead of the competition when it came to applying for jobs. Whatever pathway you choose, you’ll find that your communication qualifications are in great demand in the workplace, both here in Australia and all over the world.

Communication and Media Studies In the tradition of liberal education, communication and media studies offers students an opportunity to explore the complex world of human interaction with a critical eye. Communication and media are challenging fields for both study and work. The complexity of human communication requires understanding and analytic professionals. A rapidly developing body of academic literature looks at the many roles of communication and the media and the issues they raise about life in the 21st century. For students seeking advanced careers in a range of communication and media professions, a flexible study major allows students to explore the field more deeply. Majors are also available in the areas of Journalism and Film and Television within some communication degrees. Please see the relevant pages within this brochure and visit www.bond.edu.au/hss for course structures. Corporate Communication A growing number of Australia’s top managers and executives see communication as central to facilitating the operation of organisations and positioning them with a leading edge as they reconfigure themselves for a global environment and redefine the products and services they can provide. Future managers and corporate communication leaders must understand the processes for creating, accessing and delivering communication services. They need to know how communication relates to corporate and organisational strategy. Students undertaking corporate communication will study areas such as conflict resolution, crisis and risk management and interpersonal, intercultural, gender and organisational communication among other corporate communication areas.

Public Relations Public relations is one of the fastest growing industries in today’s corporate environment. This field involves a combination of communication activities and press coverage, designed to enhance the prestige or goodwill of a company’s product or an individual. The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences offers an exciting practical course designed to familiarise students with the public relations industry and the key roles and responsibilities of public relations practitioners. Students will have the opportunity to develop and apply a variety of skills through the creation of, and participation in, actual public relations event simulations and activities including writing speeches, managing crises, writing press releases, developing online brochures, researching and writing a campaign document and running simulated press conferences. Bond provides students with knowledge of community relations, employee relations, media relations, multicultural communication, issue and crisis management, executive speech training and organisational relationship management. Offering comprehensive courses in this dynamic career, we maintain an excellent relationship with the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) the Public Relations Industry’s leading professional body and have the largest number of PRIA accredited programs in Australia.

HYBRID Degrees A Business component is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication (Business), Master of Communication (Business) and Master of Communication (Business) (Professional). Presenter - Saturday Disney, Channel 7

Bond’s three semesters per year meant that I could complete a Bachelor of Communication in just two years and launch my career at a very young age. On a television program like Saturday Disney, communication, journalism and general media skills are all very important. Bond’s communication program was the perfect foundation for me to kick-start my career. I majored in journalism which gave me a really good understanding of writing, researching and camera operations. My lecturers helped me line up internships with Channel 9 Gold Coast News and 102.9 Hot Tomato. I also worked on various television and movie sets as an extra while I was studying. I finished my degree with invaluable knowledge from lecturers and fellow students. I now look to my lecturers as mentors and feel as though I could still contact them for support.

MULTIMEDIA DESIGN

MULTIMEDIA DESIGN www.bond.edu.au/communication-media The School of Communication and Media offers a variety of study options within the field of multimedia design. These include: • • •

Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Advertising) Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Mass Communication) Bachelor of Multimedia Design (Production

My passion is design and I believe good design can be applied to many different mediums. I am constantly inspired by the creativity that emerges from my students as they are taught the theory behind great digital design and then encouraged to break the rules they have just been taught. It gives me great pleasure to watch where the students take what they’ve learned in my classes into their professional careers. Jan Jervis - SENIOR TEACHING FELLOW, COMPUTERS GAMES AND MULTIMEDIA

DESIGN YOUR FUTURE Multimedia can be defined as electronically delivered combinations of text, art, sound, animation and video often with interaction, appearing regularly in areas such as business, education, public places, games, film, marketing and advertising. Developments in information and communication technology are driving changes across the globe, responding to the demands of industry sectors such as advertising, media communication, video game development and screen production. The Bachelor of Multimedia Design with majors in Advertising, Mass Communication, or Production, all offer a comprehensive foundation in specialist skills relating to digital image design, web design, 2D and 3D video, animation, sound, special effects and computer games. Our key multimedia design subjects and specialist majors that form part of the degree, equip students with a solid foundation in digital design. This allows students to focus on their strengths and passion, eventually guiding them into a rewarding career of their choice. The focus of this degree is to equip students with technology and design skills in industry standard software and also to ensure students have a clear understanding of the theory and principles behind their choices. In the digital media design subject, students are taught the fundamental design principles necessary for professional multimedia design. These are applied to image editing, packaging design and other pieces that assist with the start of a portfolio of their work. In website design students learn to plan, design, create and then publish to their unique URL, a web address supplied by Bond University. This real world website must address the latest web standards and rules for accessibility and professional website design. Students are encouraged to create a website for real clients.

In the sound subject students learn about sound production by creating sounds for a selected video. They are expected to showcase a combination of music theory, aesthetics and composition, recording studio practice and electronic sound generation, and use these skills to create ambient special effects for the video. Students in both 2D animation and 3D modelling and animation are required to create short animated movie clips using the principles and techniques for animation and theory taught in the subjects. The student’s final multimedia subject is a capstone project. Working in small groups with guided instruction from the lecturer, they plan, create, develop, test and document a project of their choice from start to finish. This project is especially useful for their portfolios while also allowing the students to gain experience of real world expectations within a protected environment. Bond’s Bachelor of Multimedia Design programs open up a wealth of new and exciting career opportunities in all areas of mass media, from film, television and advertising production through to journalism, photography and video gaming. This enables you to design your future and see your ambition come to life.
