BO DESIGN SU N URBAN PORTFOLIO

SHEFFIELD 2013

Before 2013, I was a public artist. Since 2013, I have two roles窶馬ot only an artist, but also an urban designer. The work in my hand will not be just an aesthetic thing. The work in my hand will be a network structure between social and spatial issue. If it is said that art could make artists themselves intoxicated, urban design could serve public.

This diagram shows the framwork of this whole year. As my original magor was Public Art, I always considered the urban work from the perspective of Public Art at the beginning. With the time flying, my urban design process was generated gradually. Firstly, Urban Design Tools and Participation of Architecture and Urban Design played the role as the application method and the sessions of Urban Histories and History and theory of Urban Design palyed the role as the theoritical foundation to support my Urban Design Projects. With the module of Reflection of Urban Design Practice, I explored more about decision making in the urban design process. All of this theories and methods consisted my knowledge system and worked together with my Public Art thinking.

04

The site of Urban Design Tools and UDP1 is in Shalesmoor, Sheffield. These two sessions took us 12 weeks to experience Shalesmoor and give the proposals at last.

ABOUT URBAN DESIGN TOOLS Actually, I didn’t learn any tools of Urban Design before I come to Sheffield. It is a method to frame the urban design work which consisted of situating, gathering, surveying, mapping, communicating and collaborating. To experience the space and communicate with the public are the most important aspects in the further projects.

What I found: Problems in Shalesmoor: Too many empty buildings could be reused in different ways to rescue this area and to make here vivid again. We can see some attempt like studios, shops, exhibitions and so on. Some other solution should be found as well. Situating: During this week, I situated myself in Shalesmoor. I walked to this area, I walked across streets here, I walked along the road here, and I also walked into some spaces in this area. I tried to chat with the local to explore more about this unfamiliar spaces and the history, although I am living here. I was always thinking what I should record. So here, the conclusion in my view is that situating is just a tool that focusing on not only Shalesmoor, but also all kinds of places in our projects. We must hold this tool during our projects. The other thing I recognized is that time and space could contain all the things. Just situate ourselves in the time and the spaces.

ABOUT URBAN DESIGN TOOLS

SITUATING

GATHERING

--FORGOTTEN SPACE & ARTS Every time, when I walked into a new city, I would focus on the arts aspect of the city. How do we use arts to make communities engaged, experience and get happiness in the urban space? Here, I would like to use different methods to gather the arts information of SHALESMOOR. I thought although this area was not as booming as the steel age, the power of arts could give it a new life.

COLLABORATION

ABOUT UDP1 The main issue of this project is public space. At first, I thought I was so familiar with the word “public” and “public space” as all the public art would and must happen in public space. I was so confident to talk about this topic. However, during the task of giving a definition of public space, I felt confused. I cannot give an exact definition this time, because the things are always dialectical and relative. At last, according to the research, were defined “public space” in our project which is the places where you can make things happen legally and feel free to talk and communicate are accessible and well-maintained; at the same time, it is a relative concept which depends on the user group and time. After the re-definition task, we turned on to the part of public space audit. In order to know the space better, in this project, the design participation occupied a big part. We used four participation techniques which we learnt from the module of participation of architecture and urban design with our own creative and critical thinking to make public get involved in our research. Actually we got lots of feedbacks. This part would be showed in the further pages of my portfolio. At the meantime, we collaborated with other groups to do the public space taxonomy and map the spaces in the Google map. This stage also gave us a inspiration of our strategy part. Finally, the proposals were given basing on all the research we had done. Urban Design Tools and participation design played a role as the application method in the first project, we attempted the tools and the participation techniques which were much lacked during my previous work of public art in the whole process. Although we were always struggling with the research, as the beginning of Urban Design studying, we all enjoyed it. We were making great effort to learn from “0”.

14

I have been living in Shalesmoor for about three months; however, I just walked to the river Don because of the Mapping Task. That is really a fantastic place. The public place like the Kelham Island Museum, the old machine, the good view of river Don and so on. All the things look lovely. But one thing I have to consider whether all the places are open for public. Sometimes I was really very nervous to enter the courtyards, because I didn’t have the sense of belonging, although there would be surprising.

15

After re-defining "public space", as to our site

! Blind Spot where people don’t normally notice but has the possibility of becoming a public space.

! Outdoor public space where we can reach.

OUR FOCUS As Public Space is a big concept, we want to focus on some specific point to start our survey. We attended one workshop of the Urban Blind Spots Forum several weeks ago, after that we’re seeing things differently, we can see places and traces that normally no one would notice. When we were walking in our site, we found some open spaces that are quite like “blind spots” which are easy to ignore but have the potential to become public spaces. And these so called “blind spots” are easy to operate on if we want to do some creative survey because few people care about them. That’s why we decided to start our public space audit by testing some of them.

PUBLIC SPACE AUDIT ROUTES OF DIFFERENT USER GROUPS - Passerby: When there are choices they will avoid going into this area. - People who work here: go from one place to another without stopping, as few places for them to stay, so most of them not familiar with this area. SPOTS The most popular spots we have got are all indoor spaces showing the lack of outdoor public spaces in this area. TIME - After staying one place for a period of time, we experienced the changing of sun direction affecting the degree of comfort of outdoor public spaces. - The function of the blind spot we have chosen is changing between weekdays and weekends which we found out during our survey. - The square on the end of the Kelham Island is seasonal changeable (e.g. the Victorian Christmas Market every year). COLLABORATIVE EXPERINECE -The Participating Poster and the Furnace Park Bench used in our creative survey did attract people’s attention. -After the first surveying day, we took the advice from the interviewees making the roads on our poster clearer. -Using the existing materials (e.g. Furnace Park bench) can make a survey more effective. 22

After auditing public spaces, would give the proposals. Here is our vision.

We think what make the SKIN area so unique is that it’s a combination of 5 elements: Works & Business, Cultural & Creative Industry, Historical Building (*Identity & Characteristic*), Residence and Green Space. But. there are not enough connections between these 5 elements, people stay inside the buildings for most of the time, you can hardly see anyone on the streets even during lunchtime. So we want to fill in the gaps by using the unused open spaces along the streets. In the Taxonomy we’ve created in Task 4, there’s a tagging system which covers over 10 categories. We picked 3 tags from the system that we think represent the ‘off’ charactor of a public space which are no-function, facilities-unprovided and not-maintained, and we want to turn them ‘on’by our proposals. Hence, the aim is to

turn on the blind spots.

At the meantime, in order to test our ideas and understand more what they needed, we took another three participation activities, except the poster one. we also read a lot of policies after the participation events. We were very happy to find that what we would like to do was also suitable for the policies. 23

ABOUT UDP1

Make people feel belonged to the area. Achieve an atmosphere of sharing & communicating. Attract more people to come to the area. Retain the key character of the area.

PARTICIPATION WALL Firstly, we chose the temporary walls of fences which are obvious to be seen, Secondly, we used spray paints and chalks to write down the questions we had already prepared and left chalks on the wall to let passersby answer the question. On the right hand side, the outcommes here were the results for two days participation wall. - From this participating walls test we understand more about people’s demands and needs for different kind of facilities, which can support our strategy making. - The walls are also communicating walls, as they can create a space for people to share their emotions and ideas, at the same time enhance the communicating atmosphere here. - There are two walls having the most of answers which make us think about the location selection of communicating walls in the proposal making.

PARTICIPATION WITH SKINN-

- FUNCTION: Setting weekend markets or night markets (i.e. second hand market/ hand crafts market/ temporary library) in some of the car parks near the blind spots can be an efficient way of using the public spaces, as they will be almost empty during weekends or after work.

NO. 1

- FACILITIES: - The communicating board is an efficient and creative way of increasing the sharing atmosphere here, which is better than some forums on-line. - In consideration of prostitutes in this area, shelters mentioned in the draft facility proposals should better be designed transparently. - More street lights, ground lights and CCTV should be added to enhance the sense of security in this area.

24 months is our first strategy circle. We believe a strategy should be updated as the circumstances change. A strategy should have a wide range of people and organisations signed up to it, taking responsibility for its delivery, monitoring and review. We would like to take the squares we are working on as a module, and there are many similar modules in SKIN. We wish the strategy we provided could spread like a network in the whole SKIN area.

ABOUT UDP2 In the second project, we should deal with the urban support system in Zimapan, Mexico where we could not go directly—a remote project. We focused on the urban built environment and regarded it as the urban support system to provide new possibilities in the street environment for the whole city and the public. The enormous challenge in this project was that almost all the facts of the site we got were secondhand. Hence, in the first four weeks we exploited different kinds of tools to contact with the collaborating university in Mexico, because they have been there and done some research, and the local people to understand the site better, like facebook, twitter, survey monkey, you tube, etc. Fortunately, one local kind-heart man named Ortiz Rodriguez gave us a huge help during the whole project and we had a very good interaction with each other. In this project, firstly, we were trained to use diagrams or charts to show all the information and the structure of urban support system. It is really an effective way to explain our ideas and thinking to our tutors, collaborating university colleagues and the local people. Secondly, in order to present a narrative project, we tried a lot of creative ways to show our work, such as the power point presentation, pop-up models, acting, and strategy booklet making. Last but not least, because of the collaborating with the group members, the project could go smoothly. It plays the same important role not only for urban design but also for public art, because both of these two disciplines are integrated disciplines which could not be done by just one person.

THE CREATIVE PRESENTATION

SCRIPT Grandfather: Hello. My name is Eduardo. I am a 67 year-old retired mine worker, I am wheel chair bound at the moment, I think this proposal will help me get around with ease and more independence in the town, with pedestrian only and improved accessibility and safety to the main sites of the town and provide more facilities so I can spend more time outside in the fresh air with old friends and family. Grandmother: Hello. My name is Miranda. I am 66 years old retired school teacher, I think this proposal will make my necessary trips to the market easier, safer and more comfortable as I have many places to rest now and have some water to drink while giving me shade to walk in to have a break from the hot sun. Grandson: Hello. My name is Jorge. I am 11 years old and I am a school student, the new changes would make my walk to school safer and easier and I can meet my friends on the way to school and we can spend some time enjoying the colorful walk, we also do walks in school to the park where we spend time playing in the new playing area while on the route we display our art work from our school work. Granddaughter: Hello. My name is Audry and I am a nurse , this proposal has really helped me spend more time out-doors while meeting friends and my boyfriend, we walk the route and enjoy the main sites of zimapan while providing resting places where we can have coffee and chat specially at night with improved lighting when we feel comfortable and safe. Mother: Hello. My name is Carmen. I am 39 years old I am a traveling street seller. At the moment I spend some time selling fruits and vegetable in the market, I think this proposal will help me sell my goods by making it easier for me to push the trolley around with ease and provide shade and water during the hottest time of the day, so I can finish selling earlier and spend more time with my family in the evening, when we meet with other families in the new facilities with the kids playing safely. Father: Hello. My name is Sergio. I am a 42 year old miner, I spend all my working week working in the mines and this proposal will make me less worried about my family when I am at work by knowing that safety and accessibility will be improved. In the evening I spend more time with friends having coffee and enjoying the new facilities and lighting.

ABOUT UNP3 This time the group work become a little bit harder because we just had two members during the whole process. Creative quarter was the vision we needed to propose with the resources for this project. The site of the last project of this year was Oberhafen in Hamburg. Fortunately, we had a fabulous field trip in Hamburg for one week. We explored not just our site but also the collaboration of Udn, architect studios and so on. The most impressive thing was the workshop day with the colleagues from Udn. We did a no-money trade activity to explore “city as a resource in Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg. The details will be showed in the further pages. After the field trip of City as a resource in Hamburg, we had a long discussion about the concepts of resource, tool, etc. And then, our re-definition of creative quarter for Oberhafen come out which was a process that the original culture of the site as an old train station become the public memory because of the obsolescent status and we would like to add new elements to active this place, at the meantime, the new culture was produced, with the time flying the new culture generated a relative original culture. It worked like a machine all the time. And the issue we would like to deal with was the relationship between the logistic companies and the creative workshop and how it could become coexistence. Hence, the proposals we gave followed this concept. Another significant part of this project was the physical model making. As an art student, the handing ability was not a problem. It was an efficient way to understand the scale of the site better, test our ideas and discuss with others with the physical model. It was more intuitive. 67

LOCATION The centrally located Oberhafen neighborhood is well connected to the rest of Hafencity. Later it will also encompass the Central Wholesale Market site to the east and its creative influence will spill over into the central neighborhoods of Hafencity, Rotenburgsort, City Sud and the “museum mile. The whole area is shaped by the southern Oberhafen harbor basin and the rail tracks, which reveal its movement characteristic.

BACKGROUND OF OBERHAFEN

BACKGROUND OF OBERHAFEN CLITURE

Before, as a tax free port, Oberhafen showed the busy scene.

Currently the area is still dedicated as a rail depot and long warehouses and multi-story frontage buildings are the main features of Oberhafen neighborhood. Most buildings are still occupied and will continue to be used primarily for logistic activities. A few vacant lots have already been occupied by creative lessees, like artistical workshops. Nevertheless, new change of use permits and considerable modernization will be needed, as well as flood-protection for individual buildings. 70

re NEW CULTURE

A mix between an institutional frame and free space, between permanent and temporary structure as well as a healthy mix of top-down and bottom-up process. This mix needs to be placespecific and flexible enough to react to change. ----------Ares Kalandides (Spaces of Transformation-successful places) 71

Stay harmoniously, owning to the flexible, changeable and recyclable constructions depending on different functions, people and time. AIMS According to the theme, this quarter will become a coexistence space, which is consisted of the internal coexistence between the logistic companies and artistical workshop; and the external coexistence among the historic Hamburg, Hafencity and Oberhafen. As a creative quarter, the constructions will be considered for not only the permanent daily work but also the temporary activities. Making the best use of the existing and the potential resources in/surrounding the area is to make a new movement of this area.

In order to know the site better, we did two survey of the people inside and outside Oberhafen.

81

ABOUT UDP3

According to the survey, the area is designed with 6 function areas.

TRAFFIC STREAMLINE ANALYSIS

82

1 Two bridges should be built to connect with the historic Hamburg, at the meantime, the tourists could share the same parking area with the wholesale market, as the busy time of the market is in the morning. 2 Because of the establishment of the metro station in the south of Oberhafen, one undercross could be built to combine with it. 3 Utilisation of the existing ferry system, a new port could be built as a new stop for ferry transportation.

During the main module of urban design, I applied some methods of public art in the urban design work. After that, it also gave me more inspiration in public art work. There is no doubt that in my future career, urban design and public art would not be apart from each other. The theories and the methods will be used universally in my knowledge system. As an urban designer, I should take more responsibility to public and shoulder more hard work than an artist. This year, I travelled a lot, tried a lot and learnt a lot. How about you? ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Firstly, I would also like to thank my parents who gave me the big encouragement to study here. Secondly, I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to all the MAUD tutors who gave us the golden opportunity to do these wonderful projects, which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and I came to know about so many new things. I am really thankful to them. At last, I must thank all the colleagues who experienced the projects together with me, I think we learnt a lot from each other within the whole year. THANKS AGAIN TO ALL.
