BONNAROOVIANS!

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, it’s not holiday season quite yet—though if you are itching for the Christmas spirit, then look no further than our own Snake & Jake’s Christmas Club Barn. Bonnaroo is here and we can’t wait to host you at our 700-acre party. Once again, we are proud to present more than 150 musicians, comedians, filmmakers, artists and activists who will surely make this year’s festival the best Bonnaroo yet. We are particularly excited to welcome back a few old favorites who have grown with our festival over the years and are now among our marquee names, including Mumford & Sons, Deadmau5, Kendrick Lamar, Florence + The Machine, My Morning Jacket, Bassnectar and Alabama Shakes. It doesn’t matter if they made their mark playing banjo, dropping late-night-beats or stirring up soulful, psychedelic music—every one of them has made the pilgrimage to Manchester during the past 14 years and, like you, are now firmly part of our Bonnaroovian community. We are also super excited to bring back one of our heroes, Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters, and to present the Piano Man himself, Billy Joel, for an epic festival-closing set on the What Stage. Of course, a big part of the Bonnaroo experience has always been discovery, and we hope to introduce you to some of your future favorites on the Who Stage. We also invite you to chill out in both our Comedy Theatre and our Bonnaroo Cinema—and not just because they are air-conditioned. Our top-notch comedy lineup includes The Nerdist podcast creator Chris Hardwick and our old pal—and new The Late Late Show musical director—Reggie Watts, the rare entertainer to appear on The Farm as both a comedian and musician. Our Bonnaroo Cinema is back too, featuring a ridiculous mix of films (some of which haven’t even hit theaters yet) and unique performances. Plus, when else can you belt out a version of “The Power of Love” that would make Marty McFly proud before attending your very own Enchantment Under the Sea Dance Party? Even if you made your festival must-see list—and checked it twice—we hope that you’ve saved some time for a few surprises. This year, we are proud to present more interactive experiences than ever, which will not only blur the lines between fans and performers, but also take the party off the stage (and in some cases into the woods). Be sure to stop by The Grove, our own little enchanted forest, or visit Over There for a bit of local “Southern charm.” Speaking of reality TV, we’ve also given our visual mascot, The Fountain, a Bravo-worthy makeover with the help of New York designer Queen Andrea. Bonnaroo has deep New Orleans roots and, this year, we’ll nod to those legendary Mardi Gras parties with a bevy of parades, surprise performances and the one-and-only Christmas Barn Robe Rage. This wouldn’t be our favorite weekend of the year without you, our Bonnaroovian family, and we want to start this party off by thanking y’all for making this weekend possible. Remember to live by the Bonnaroo Code and let the fun begin! Superfly and AC Entertainment

A WORD ABOUT

ot all festivals are created equal. Episode 14 is here to prove this once again. And while we celebrate the extraordinary city of music and art that is Bonnaroo, it’s you—our community—that makes the experience one of a kind. The festival is a home away from home, creating memories that we carry with us long after we leave The Farm. Our success would not be possible without the partners who, like us, are dedicated to a better Bonnaroo for every attendee, artist and staff member. We would like to sincerely thank all of them for supporting our music, our community and our nonprofit endeavors. For you Bonnaroo veterans, you’ll notice some familiar brands that have become loyal friends of the festival. Garnier Fructis returns with their Centeroo salon so that you can get your summer style on. The New Music on Tap Lounge, brewed by Miller Lite, boasts an awesome lineup of up-and-coming bands. Drop by The Backyard by Ford to relax, catch an intimate artist performance and check out your future ride. Back by popular demand is The Grind in Pod 7, where Teva is helping you go DIY on your fancy footwear while sipping on some java. For the first time this year, KOHLER® will be in the campgrounds amping up the showers to keep you fresh. We’ll cheers to good health with LIVE LOUD Live Well at Bonnaroo, thanks to GNC. Make sure to have a nighttime visit to the Jen Lewin Pool courtesy of MTV. Do you love to get down late-night? Red Bull Music Academy will be bringing some musical prodigies to the Kalliope Stage on Friday night and to the Silent Disco on Saturday night. To close things out on Sunday, our friends at HBO® are hosting a special season finale screening of Game Of Thrones® from The Other Tent. And after the event, take comfort in knowing that you can still catch epic performances from this year’s festival on Red Bull TV. There are hundreds of adventures to be found, so wander off the beaten path and discover the magic. Again, we would like to extend a thank you to all of our partners, whose support not only makes Bonnaroo possible for us, but also makes it more enjoyable for you. GENERAL

information

Entry Policy The Neighborhood Although Bonnaroo is its own little magical kingdom, the real-world town of Manchester, Tenn. surrounds us. With your help, we want to make sure we’re considerate of our neighbors to ensure they welcome us back. When you’re outside the festival grounds, remember that you are Out There and please follow all pedestrian rules and be respectful of our neighbors and their property. Show them some Bonnaroo love. Wristbands We use an ultra-high security wristband system called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) that equips each wristband with its own uniquely coded chip. Wristbands must be worn at all times. Your wristband will be scanned each time you enter/exit Centeroo, The Arch, the Woodlands entrance to the What Stage and the campgrounds via the tollbooths. Do not tamper with your wristband in any way. Do not cut, burn, stretch, fold, spindle or mutilate it. Altered wristbands will be invalid and any person in possession of an altered wristband will be charged a replacement fee or may be ejected from the festival site. If you have any questions or problems with your wristband (even if it 12

itches), then visit one of the three Wristband Customer Service stations located at the Centeroo entrance, The Arch and the Woodlands entrance to What Stage.

Re-Entry Policy In + Out of Campgrounds in a Vehicle We hope you won’t need to leave our little utopia during the festival, but if you do, please wait until Friday evening, unless there is a serious emergency. It is best to arrive on The Farm with enough supplies to last you the whole weekend. If you forget something, then we’ve got you covered. There are two General Stores on-site offering a variety of items for all your weekend needs. Exiting is only allowed through the East or West Tollbooths. Everyone inside the exiting vehicle must have their wristband scanned out by Bonnaroo staff, and scanned in when they return. If you exit through any other location, or fail to have your wristband scanned in or out,

you and your vehicle will not be allowed to re-enter the festival. Anytime you leave the campgrounds, you’ll have to go through another vehicle search when you return (just like you were entering for the first time). In + Out of Campgrounds On Foot You may leave and re-enter the festival grounds on foot at any time and as often as you like, but only through the East and West Tollbooths. You must have your wristband scanned out by Bonnaroo staff and scanned back in when you return. Very important: If you do not have your wristband scanned out, then you will not be allowed to re-enter the site. It’s obvious, but we have to say it: Do not attempt to leave through the Highway Tollbooth, even if you originally came in this way. It’s a highway. It’s dangerous. What would your mother say?

Day Parking Day parkers may enter and leave only through the West Tollbooth. To get there, use Exit 111 from I-24 and follow the signs to the festival. If Exit 111 is closed, then follow police instructions and then follow the signs to Day Parking. Note: inbound traffic may be heavy on Thursday and Friday—it may take a little longer for day parkers to enter on those days. No cars can be left overnight. Emergency Vehicle Access Our roads may not look like city streets, but for emergency and maintenance vehicles, they are efficient—as long as they stay clear. Please do not walk in the middle of the road. Walk in the shoulders to let official vehicles through.

13

Camping and Campgrounds Camping The campgrounds are conveniently divided into sections by streets (East-West) and avenues (North-South). Each General Admission Campground section is strategically named on the official Bonnaroo Site Map so you can find your way home and tell people where to find you. The campgrounds will close at 3 pm on Monday, June 15. As a safety measure, no open fires are allowed inside the festival grounds. (This specifically includes the campgrounds.) Please exercise extraordinary caution with matches, disposal of cigarette butts and any other type of open flame.

14

Family Camping If you are bringing small children, then consider using our Family Camping Area. Bonnaroo is a place for people of all ages, but we feel a special area for parents and their small children will help provide a better festival experience for all. Expecting parents are also welcome in this area. You don’t need a special ticket to camp here. Just ask for this camping section at the Tollbooth. Your vehicle will be flagged and the parking staff will direct you to the right place. Patrons with Disabilities: Accessible Camping + Parking The Accessible Camping and Accessible Day Parking areas are reserved for patrons with mobility disabilities. A state-issued accessible parking license plate, placard or hangtag is required to use these areas. No reservations are needed. The Accessible Camping and Accessible Day Parking areas are close to the main Centeroo entrance.

PODs PODs, or community information and service centers, are located throughout the camp ground. Locate them on your festival map or by the numbered and colored balloons tethered overhead. Each POD is staffed 24/7 by a Bonnaroo Ambassador, and equipped with an Info Booth, Community Message Bulletin Board, Medical Tent, Security Station, toilets and hand-washing stations.

Hand-Washing + Water Stations Hand-washing stations are located at each POD as well as in Centeroo, so you can brush those teeth, wet that face and cleanse that soul. The water at these stations is 100 percent filtered and drinkable, so feel free to fill up your water bottles. Remember, this is not your bathtub—there are showers for bathing.

Bathrooms Bathrooms (accompanied by stand-alone hand-washing stations) are strategically located at each POD and throughout the campgrounds to meet your urgent needs. They are cleaned frequently, but they are also used frequently, so please do your part to make the Porta-Potty experience as clean and enjoyable (maybe that’s not the right word) as possible. Use them only to deposit what nature intended and help keep them clean. Remember the Golden Rule of Public Toilets: Leave them as you’d like to find them. Bathrooms in the GA Campgrounds are the traditional portable affairs, equipped with hand sanitizer units and seat covers. Those in the VIP Campground are more— ahem—commodious. There are also hand sanitizer units and stand-alone hand-washing units in each bathroom—please use them!

Showers Hosted by Kohler ® and Garnier Fructis Showers can be found at most POD locations, indicated on your festival map. Showers are operated and cleaned by our very own shower fairies during hours of operation: Wednesday from 9 pm–12 am at PODs 1+3+10, and at all PODS from 6 am–2 am on Thursday–Sunday and 6 am–11 am on Monday. Showers are not free but they come with complimentary Garnier Fructis shampoo, conditioner and treatment samples, Garnier Fructis styling stations, a KOHLER® goodie bag and a chance to win a free KOHLER® Moxie showerhead while supplies last! Showers cost $10 during peak hours (daily between 6 am–2 pm and 6 pm–10 pm) and thanks to our friends at KOHLER®, we offer $5 “happy hours” during off-peak hours (daily from 2 pm–6 pm and 10 pm–2 am).

15

Bonnaroo Golf Cart Service For a fee, we offer a golf cart taxi service to help you get around the campgrounds. Designated routes are indicated on your festival map, and the taxis are clearly marked so be on the lookout—flag one down to catch a ride!

Safety Information Safety Staff You can find our safety staff roaming through every campground, at every POD, at the entrance to Centeroo and the Main Venue and at all the stages, as well as throughout all of Centeroo and the Main Venue. Our safety (aka security) staff is trained to help

16

make sure that everyone has a good time and stays safe. If you have a security issue in the campgrounds, then each POD has a security station that is open 24 hours. Mounted security patrols (yes, on horseback!) roam the campground areas at all times and can assist as well. Lasso one if you need help. All vehicles will be searched upon entering the festival at the Tollbooths (which you should definitely keep in mind when deciding what to bring). And prepare to be (politely) searched each time you enter Centeroo or the Main Venue. Medical Tents In the Main Venue, the Medical Emergency Services tent is located near the bleachers. There are two Medical tents located in Centeroo: one located to the left of the Ferris

Wheel and one located between the Cinema Tent and This Tent. Also, each campground POD has medical staff on duty 24 hours a day, so look for the balloon. Lots of things can happen on The Farm: bee stings, arm-wrestling injuries, faces rocked off while dancing. That’s why the Main Venue, Centeroo and every POD is home to a Bonnaroo medical tent. For your safety, medical tent areas with licensed professionals are available. The Centeroo medical tent is staffed with nurses and physicians, and a roaming medical staff is always on duty in the concert venue. In an emergency, if you’re

not near a medical tent, then find a staff member with a radio or notify the nearest security personnel so that they can get you whatever help you may need. Food Safety Please don’t buy from unlicensed vendors. We work hard to ensure that all official food and drink is good and safe. And really, if you buy something from an unlicensed vendor, then you have no idea what you’re getting. There is a lot of great stuff to buy from official Bonnaroo vendors who have made a commitment to support Bonnaroo. They deserve your business.

17

Centeroo & Main Venue Hours of Operation Centeroo is the heart of the festival. It opens at noon on Thursday, June 11, and will stay open nonstop, just like Las Vegas, until 10 pm on Sunday, June 14. The Main Venue is adjacent to Centeroo, where the What Stage is located. The Main Venue opens at 1 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and closes after the What Stage headliner takes their last bow each night. When you enter these areas, you’ll be searched and you must show your all-powerful wristband. You do not need to purchase a ticket for the various activities throughout Centeroo, except for the Ferris Wheel. What is Not Allowed Inside Centeroo + Main Venue No cans or glass bottles of any kind. No alcohol, video recording devices, professional photography equipment or cameras with detachable lenses longer than 2 inches (point-and-shoot cameras without additional lenses are OK), laser pens or focused-light devices, lawn chairs, folding chairs that sit higher than a foot off the ground, or anything

18

that might impair the sight of other spectators (like flags, umbrellas or shade structures) and anything that’s prohibited anywhere else on the festival grounds. We reserve the right to add items to this list if necessary. All patrons are subject to a search by Bonnaroo security personnel upon entry into Centeroo and the Main Venue. Please be advised that the security companies, facility, promoters and performers will not be responsible for any items that are confiscated during search procedures. Barricade Arrangements at the What and Which Stages Following the model of most European festivals, we have implemented a double barricade system at the very front of the What Stage and the Which Stage. This system allows more fans access to the upfront experience over the course of the weekend. As shown in the diagram, the entrances to the pit areas are located at the front of the stage on each side. A queue will be created on both sides along the venue walls. Each pit will be cleared after each performance, allowing a new group of fans to enter the area. You are not allowed to remain in the area to wait for the next performance. If you want to

be in the pit for any of the performances at the What or Which Stage, then please be sure to get in line before the performance is scheduled to begin. And keep in mind: You must follow the instructions of all security personnel who work actively to ensure that you, and everyone around you, enjoys a great concert experience.

Lost + Found Lost + Found is located at POD 4. If you lose something, or someone, then check there first. If it (or they) are not there the first time, then check again later. And if you find something that needs to be returned to its owner, then please drop it off at POD 4 next to the Clock Tower.

General Stores There are three General Stores located on the festival grounds—one in the campgrounds near the Clock Tower, a second in the camp grounds across from The Arch and the third in Centeroo across from Broo’ers Fest. General Stores in the campground are open from 9 am–3 am during the festival (closing earlier on Sunday night) and offer personal hygiene items, batteries, disposable cameras, ice, beer, water, soda, food—you get the picture.

Telephones + Service There is a cellphone tower on the property, but with so many Bonnaroovians texting and sending photos to jealous friends back home, service can be inconsistent. Phones for emergencies are available at the Info Booth in Centeroo.

Facilities Locker Rentals For a fee, lockers are available to stash your stuff in during the festival. Lockers can be found inside the main venue right past The Arch and are accessible all weekend long. Info Booths There are two main Info Booths on the festival grounds—one inside the Main Venue (by The Arch) and the other in Centeroo across from the Ferris Wheel. Both are noted on your festival map. You’ll also find Satellite Info Booths located at each POD. Info Booths stay open 24 hours, and close at 10 pm on Sunday, June 14.

ATMs If you need cash, then you can find ATMs in Centeroo, at the General Stores and at POD 3. All locations are clearly marked on your festival map. Post Office If you want to buy something from one of the many vendors onsite but are unsure how to get it home, then this is the stop for you. The Post Office, located in Planet Roo, will have boxes, envelopes, packing materials and stamps, as well as special Bonnaroo postcards and the official Bonnaroo Postmark!

Clean Vibes Help Keep the Scene Clean With great fun comes great responsibility. Please help Clean Vibes, our heroic trash and recycling crew, by keeping your site and the concert areas clean. Recycle, compost and pick up after yourself. What goes where: RECYCLING: Place in the recycling collection bins located throughout the site and in the blue bags at your campsite. All plastic containers, aluminum and tin cans, glass, clean mixed paper, drink cartons, plastic packaging and grocery bags can be recycled this year. COMPOST: Place all food waste and other compostables in the compost collection bins throughout the site or in clear bags at your campsite. (Do not contaminate with trash.) All plates, cups, forks and other food service items sold by festival vendors are compostable. CIGARETTE BUTTS: Place in butt bins located throughout Centeroo for recycling or collect and turn them in at the Clean Vibes Trading Post for prizes. LANDFILL: If it can’t be recycled or composted, then place it in the landfill collection bins throughout the site or in a

clear bag at your campsite. Styrofoam, chip bags, ice cream and candy wrappers should go in this bin. When the music stops, please clean up your campsite. (Get extra bags at your POD.) Pick up bottle caps and any other debris. Tie up your bags and leave them at the edge of the road. We’ll take it from there. Collect cans, cups and bottles, or cigarette butts using a bag from the Clean Vibes Trading Post in Planet Roo and trade them in for points to redeem for a variety of great prizes. Soberoo Soberoo is a group of passionate, likeminded music fans who choose to remain drug-and-alcohol-free at the festival. The group holds meetings daily at noon, 4 pm, 8 pm and midnight. (There is no midnight meeting on Sunday.) Look for the yellow balloons and get full details at the Soberoo Tent located across from That Tent in Centeroo. Patrons with Disabilities Look on the info boards or stop by the Access Center across from the Clock Tower near POD 4 for more information about the Access Program for patrons with disabilities.

BonnaROOTS

A

mid the crowds and the music, the chaos and the excitement, Bonna ROOTS provides a unique and intimate culinary experience. Festivalgoers will join special guests for a special meal— one that sheds light on local food and grassroots causes. For the second year in a row, BonnaROOTS will bring awareness to sustainable food and raise money for two incredible organizations, Oxfam America and Eat for Equity. Chef Emily Torgrimson from Eat for Equity, along with a team of volunteers from both organizations, will prepare a meal that not only highlights the flavors of the South, but is also comprised of ingredients sourced within 200 miles of Manchester, Tenn. From local Cruze Farm buttermilk to herbs picked just a few feet away at the Planet Roo Victory Garden, the meal will provide a delicious example of how it tastes to eat sustainably.

24

Oxfam America, a leading global organ ization that works to solve problems surrounding poverty, hunger and injustice, will also partner with Bonnaroo for its eighth year in a row. Last year, they teamed up with Eat for Equity and Roo Sustainability director Laura Sohn to create what we now know as the BonnaROOTS dinner. The first meal was an instant hit. “The success was a testament to the fact that the co-founders of Bonnaroo, and Bonnaroovians, share Oxfam’s goals and vision for a more just and sustainable world,” said Clara Herrero, the comm unity engagement advisor for Oxfam and a Bonnaroo veteran. The meals are not only delicious, but they also echo a greater social and environmental consciousness, following Oxfam’s five principles for feeding the planet: Save food, shop seasonal, use less meat, support farmers and cook smart. It’s a night of conversation

and camaraderie as nonprofit leaders, diners, Bonnaroo founders and others break bread next to each other. “My favorite part of last year’s dinner was seeing everything come together so well,” said Herrero. “100-plus strangers gathered at this long table right in front of the Solar Stage, sharing a locally sourced meal, discussing how everyone has a role in making change and raising money for Oxfam and Eat for Equity—it was the highlight of my year.” This year, BonnaROOTS will return with

even more spirit. The dinners will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 6 pm in Planet Roo. Tickets were sold in advance. 100 percent of all proceeds will go to benefit both Oxfam America and Eat for Equity. Both organizations offer volunteer spots to help out at the dinners, so stop by their booths by 8 pm on Thursday if you are interested in this opportunity. If you missed out on dinner tickets this year, then be sure to keep an eye out next year to reserve your spot at the table!

onnaroo Works Fund, the charitable arm of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, perpetuates the Bonnaroovian lifestyle year-round. Our mission is to make the world a better place by supporting national and local organizations that advance the arts, education and the environment, with a focus on sustainability and local reinvest ment. To date, the Bonnaroo Works Fund has donated upward of $7 million to nearly 100 causes, with a significant number of programs and projects in the ManchesterCoffee County area. A few of the past grant recipients include: Coffee County Schools, Manchester Municipal Arts Commission, Musicians On Call, Tennessee Environmental Council and VH1-Save the Music Foundation. The Bonnaroo Works Fund helps these causes through a number of different programs.

28

First, $2 from every Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival ticket is donated to the Bonnaroo Works Fund. During the festival, and throughout the year, there are several on-site and online auctions, with proceeds benefiting BWF organizations. In addition, there is the Roo Run and Root For Roo, which contribute to the Bonnaroo Works Fund. The Bonnaroo Works Fund also relies on the generous support of the Bonnaroovian community. This year, we invite you to participate in a few fundraising initiatives, 100 percent of which will benefit the Fund’s 2015-16 grant recipients. There will also be many new great ways to show your support for the Bonnaroo Works Fund, perpetuate the Bonnaroo lifestyle and help make a meaningful difference. onnaroovians can now leave their permanent mark on The Farm in the best way possible: their very own tree. With the Root For Roo program, you can now honor your C’roo or commemorate your Bonnaroo experience by sponsoring a tree planted on the festival site—either a tulip

poplar or oak, both of which are native to the area. Trees, like sponges, can help sequester carbon and provide a habitat for wildlife, food for people and animals, and stabilize the soil. If planted in the right place, then trees can also cut cooling costs by up to 50 percent and create enough oxygen annually for a family of four. Root For Roo offers the opportunity to sponsor a 3-4-inch caliper tree, which includes a tree marker so that you can find your tree onsite, and a commemorative plaque with a photo and information about the tree. In addition, you can track your tree’s progress, thanks to annual updates via an online personalized tree profile page that will display current pictures and data on its growth. It’s a great way to show your support for the Bonnaroo Works Fund, perpetuate the Bonnaroo lifestyle and help make a meaningful impact. The trees are sourced and planted by Southbranch Nursery Company, a locally owned nursery in Manchester. Proceeds benefit the Bonnaroo Works Fund organizations. For more information, or to adopt your very own Bonnaroo tree, please visit www.rootforroo.com.

Expert Opinion: How to Survive a Festival without Really Trying

Hi, I’m Nick ThuneTM. I would like to formally* welcome you to Bonnaroo. As a Festival ExpertTM who has been to Bonnaroo over 30 times in three different years, Mr. & Mrs. Bonnaroo thought I would be the perfect** person to write this. Now, back to this important essay/letter/cry for help. You’re going to see a lot of different things this weekend. Don’t be scared. Leave yourself open to new opportunities.

12 3

BEFRIEND A PERSON WITH DREADLOCKS. Since showering in the campground can be difficult, it’s best to be around people who are experienced in long stretches without shampoo.

STAY AWAY FROM PEOPLE WEARING UGGS. They are not prepared to hacky sack on a moment’s notice; therefore, they are not to be trusted.

BEFORE SEEING ANY “MUSIC,” WRITE AN EMAIL TO ALL YOUR LOVED ONES AND SAVE IT IN THE DRAFT FOLDER. Whoever is with you at the fest should have your email password. This is in case you get “lost.” Make sure to BCC Stevie Wonder. SAMPLE EMAIL:

Dear Friends and Family, I’m “lost.” I’ve been hearing, “seeing” and “eating” a lot of music. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. If I’m not back in two weeks, then please buy a star in my name. NASA’s website has all of the details. Love, Your Name Here

LAST THING: To guarantee survival, I highly recommend coming to see one of my shows with Natasha Leggero in the Comedy Theatre on Friday at 5 and 7. People have said that I’m a mix of U2 and nothing you’ve ever heard before. Bonnaroo!!!!! *I’m wearing a tuxedo as I write this. **Side Note: Are italics just insecure letters that need someone to lean on? ***Less of a side note and more of a real question 39

“I

t’s kind of the last frontier of places where anything goes,” says Dave Clements. He’s referring to Snake & Jake’s Christmas Club Lounge, the most infamous dive bar in New Orleans—a dingy, dimly lit, suspiciouslooking shack adorned with tacky Christmas decorations. Clements has owned the place for 21 years, and it’s become a melting pot for the city’s most colorful drinkers. It’s a place where people go to feel uninhibited. “Some people would call it ‘a pain in the ass, a late-night nuisance,’” he continues. “To me, it’s sort of a hold-out. There’s no jukebox. There’s barely a TV. There’s nothing at all inviting about the place until you get in there, and then you’re sort of dumbfounded that the building can even exist. Then you sit down, have a cheap drink, look around, start

talking to somebody and think, ‘What the hell?’” For the past two years, Bonnaroo has paid tribute to this New Orleans staple with the Snake & Jake’s Christmas Club Barn, a festival favorite that recreates the bar’s sensory-overload atmosphere. Brooklyn, N.Y.-based pizzeria Roberta’s fills the space with the requisite creepy Santa and plastic reindeer, as open-minded festivalgoers bask in live performances, surprise DJ sets (like Chromeo in 2014) and themed party nights (the now-legendary Robe Rage). If the real Snake & Jake’s feels like the outsiders’ hub of New Orleans, then the Barn is the same for Bonnaroo. And for Rick Farman, one of Bonnaroo’s co-founders, both bar and Barn hold extra special significance. Farman worked there in

BARN

the mid-‘90s—first as a student at Tulane University, and later operating Superfly’s workspace in a Clements-owned house next to the bar. “I really wanted a bartending job, and they’re hard to come by, especially at certain places in New Orleans, but I was fortunate enough to get the glorious job of cleaning Snake & Jake’s,” says Farman. “In August, it’s a really particular proposition because it’s very hot, and Snake & Jake’s closes after the sun comes up and opens at about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. You basically have to clean the bar in the heat of the day.” “It’s a place that we, for better or worse, grew up in,” adds fellow Superfly co-founder Kerry Black. Farman eventually landed that lucrative bar gig, and Clements took a liking to the young entrepreneur who co-founded Superfly in 1996 with Black, Jonathan Mayers and Richard Goodstone. (The company created Bonnaroo in 2002 with AC Entertainment.) Noticing Farman’s initiative, Snake & Jake’s owner decided to share his own office area with these scrappy college kids. “The company phone we gave out to people was the number for my college house, where I lived with a couple of buddies,” Farman continues. “It was not advantageous for the business to have my roommates answering that line, so we asked them if we could put a phone line in there.” Six years later, Bonnaroo was born. The Snake & Jake’s Barn came about through coincidence and happy accidents.

It was built with the help of Fuse, a festival partner, as an activation site—but when the activation was over, the crew was left with a beautiful property that had no practical function. “We initially thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to do a Christmas-themed barn in the middle of June in Tennessee?’” says Black. “And it was a very natural progression—because the words ‘barn’ and ‘bar’ are so close together— to theme it as Snake & Jake’s. As soon as we made that connection, it was full-speed ahead.” The Barn is now an essential fixture of Bonnaroo, so it’s a shock that Clements himself has not yet made the trek to Manchester. The bar owner says he plans to make it out one of these years—if he can ever find a dog-sitter. But even if he can’t, the Superfly crew will keep on bringing the zany New Orleans spirit to Tennessee. “What was and is so special about Snake & Jake’s is it’s kind of the last place in Uptown New Orleans that’s open,” Farman says. “At the end of the night, it’s a collection of all the different people who help make all the great aspects of New Orleans happen: bartenders, waiters, waitresses, musicians, strippers. One of the coolest things about working there is that, at the end of the night, you’d look out and see this cool collection of people. I think that’s part of what we hope to inspire with the Barn at Bonnaroo.”

NEW! The Grove

In the midst of 700+ acres of farmland lies an oasis; a refuge from the whirlwind that is Bonnaroo...The Grove! For years, this wooded area has remained a desolate and uncharted piece of land on The Farm, existing only in its shadows. This year, for the first time in Bonnaroo history, we’re inviting everyone to come experience this immersive environment filled with illuminating lights, spacious soundscapes and hammock seating. A sanctuary for art installations and surprise performances, there will be times when The Grove explodes with radiant energy, and other times that it’s a place for solitude and relaxation. 50

Camp Over There

“Hey! What’s Over There?” We’re so glad you asked! Be sure to give a wacky, weird and wonderful welcome to your newest neighbors at Bonnaroo. The epitome of Small Town Americana, the folks from Camp Over There are ready to shower you with the kind of down-home hospitality that’s customary with their slightly out-of-touch traditions. But it’s not all pom-poms and mom jeans Over There. Come nightfall, their old-school rules give way to the subversively strange, the outlandishly outrageous and the excitingly eccentric. We ask that you, the open-minded, brave-hearted and delightfullydistracted, keep your eyes peeled for the surreal before it disappears like a dream. Camp Over There might be looking for you.

Guided Art Walk

with Russ Bennett, Bonnaroo’s Director of Visual Design Thursday, 4 pm at The Fountain Join Russ Bennett, the man who’s been sprinkling that special fairy dust all over The Farm since the very beginning of time, for a walk through this year’s artistic ins and outs. Start off your Bonnaroo weekend by opening your eyes and acquainting yourself with all the visual wonders of your temporary Tennessee home.

The Tower

The Bonnaroo Tower is getting a makeover! Our beloved cuckoo clock has taken flight to make room for some new and exciting aspects of this epic, festival landmark. We’ve partnered with Andi Watson, longtime lighting designer for Bonnaroo veterans Radiohead, to create an experience of art and light beyond your wildest dreams that will continue to evolve over the coming years.

The Fountain

The Bonnaroo Fountain is one of the festival’s most iconic structures. Each year since it was built in 2003, we have selected an artist or group of artists to redesign and repaint the structure, creating a brand new vision and experience for Bonnaroovians. Located in the heart of Centeroo, The Fountain serves as both a way to cool off from the hot Tennessee sun and as a great meeting point. And once the sun sets, black lights transform it into a whole new wonder! This year, the Fountain was designed by New York-based artist Queen Andrea, drawing inspiration from the bright and colorful spirit of the festival and its amazing, unique fans!

The Arch

Come on in! The Arch has long been the entry point for most campers into Centeroo, and is a sight to behold each festival season. This year, David Korins Design (the same team behind the amazing top hat arch of 2011, the sparkly green arch of 2014 and more) has dreamed up a rainbow confection of glow-in-the-dark glory, ensuring that your entrances will be grand all weekend long!

Art Cars Kalliope Kalliope is back again with even more explosive fun! Rage into the wee hours of the night with its 70,000 watts of bass-ful bliss and an unforgettable light show filled with cryo cannons, fire, lasers and aerial beams. This stage is your discovery hub for electronic music talent and unannounced performances. Big Red Kalliope’s “Little Brother” art car, Big Red, serves as an adorably oversized grand marshal of this boisterous clan, and will throw a serious dance party wherever he goes. Mirage Welcome to The Farm for the very first time, Mirage! Abstract reflection of the world by day, ever-changing generative light-show by night, Mirage is a dazzling mobile art happening. Whether getting down with your own LED silhouette, dancing to lit-up replays of the day gone by or “seeing straight through” this magical car,

51

52

Mirage is sure to amaze and inspire you throughout the weekend as it roams around Centeroo and the campgrounds, also making pit stops to boogie down.

Parades

What’s better than a parade? Just about nothing. Marching to the beat of your own drum, getting dressed up in something fancy or just high steppin’ and spinning an umbrella as you second line through Centeroo is a good ol’ time and something we’ve always done at Bonnaroo. Each year’s parade is a bit different, of course, but they usually include a great brass band and sometimes lead you to a pot of gold. This year, we cordially invite you all to help us take this tradition to even greater heights by joining us in any of the parades happening over the course of the weekend. Opening Day Parade Thursday | 2 pm E. 3rd Street x 3rd Avenue Opening Day Parade is the start of a new Bonnaroo tradition. For our version of a Mardi Gras parade, join us on on Thursday afternoon in the campgrounds, where we will gear up to collect fans as we march onward to The Arch at Centeroo! The Grove Parade Thursday | 9 pm Tower (W. Broadway x 5th Avenue) Led by Art Cars Big Red & Mirage, Bonnaroovians are invited to parade into the night where they will end up at the entrance of The Grove for its grand opening. As the parade arrives, look out for a special performance and from there, we’ll let the dance party ensue. Dress as your take on a magical creature destined for Narnia!

Crazy Hat Parade Friday | 1:30 pm 4th Avenue just north of That Tent Crazy Hat Parade is exactly what it sounds like. We challenge you to wear your wildest, most absurd hats. Led by New Breed Brass Band, our parade around Centeroo starts just north of That Tent at 4th Avenue and ends at The Fountain. As they say, “The higher the hair, the closer to God!” Night Crawler Parade Saturday | 11 pm Bottom of 5th Avenue by Comedy Theatre It’s Saturday night and things are about to get weird as a parade of night crawlers dressed in LEDs, neon and black light comes through Centeroo, backed by a groovy electronic soundtrack courtesy of Big Red, ending with Big Red syncing its light show with Kalliope’s.

Bonnaroo Cinema

For an eclectic cinematic experience, look no further than the Bonnaroo Cinema—a seated, air-conditioned venue featuring brand-new independent films before they are released, mind-bending documentaries, ridiculous comedies, cult classics and crazy-fun live interactive happenings. Programming runs late each night over the course of the weekend and features live Q&A sessions with special guest filmmakers and actors, as well as unique cinematic performances with musicians and comedians.

This year’s Bonnaroo Comedy Theatre features The Nerdist’s creator Chris Hardwick and The Late Late Show’s musical director, a favorite Bonnaroo alum Reggie Watts. Tennessee’s own Ralphie May will be returning to Bonnaroo this year along with Nick Thune, Kurt Braunohler and April Richardson. Comedy veteran and Blackish star Ian Edwards rounds out a terrific 2015 comedy lineup.

Snake & Jake’s Christmas Club Barn Snake & Jake’s Christmas Club Barn has returned to serve up yet another Christmasthemed celebration in the summer heat! To keep the spirit of the legendary New Orleans dive bar alive, this out-of-the-box venue will feature glistening lights, ornate holiday decor, a naughty or nice list and a new, candy-cane-coated courtyard. The crew from Roberta’s in Bushwick, Brooklyn is also back and will be dishing out their homemade Santa’s Garlic Knots and showcasing their entourage of musical entertainers including Tiki Disco (featuring Andy Pry and Lloydski) and Full Service Party (featuring Knifeshow, Vjuan Allure, Poolboy92, Nire, Nani Castle, 54

Spliffington, Jack Inslee, Wreck Tech, 2uitter, MR.AOK & surprise guests). Check the schedule for other special performances from Jon Cleary and New Breed Brass Band, as well as raging costume-themed parties!
