WELCOME

A

“Bonnaroooooo!!!” That’s the epic call-to-arms that musicians started chanting from the stage way back in 2002, when the first Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival took place on this very farm that we are still proud to call our home. And here we are, all these years later, getting ready for our 17 th adventure through Great Stage Park. It’s crazy to think about all the new friends we’ve made along the way. U2, Jay-Z, Pearl Jam, Beastie Boys, Billy Joel, Elton John, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Metallica, Tool, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Widespread Panic, The Dead and Paul McCartney have all stopped by to deliver iconic performances, and we are proud to have watched Kendrick Lamar, Portugal. The Man, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket, Chance the Rapper and returning performers like Alt-J, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Moon Taxi, The Revivalists, Trombone Shorty and Sylvan Esso grow from festival undercards to international headliners. This year, we are excited to add to that

4

enduring legacy by welcoming a few fresh faces to The Farm for the first time. Both festival favorites in their own right, Muse will headline the What Stage on Friday night while The Killers will close out the stage, and the weekend as a whole, on Sunday night. In between, Eminem will return to Bonnaroo for the first time since 2011, when he helped us celebrate our 10 th birthday, for what is sure to be another amazing set on Saturday night. Bonnaroo is not like other fests and, to prove it, Bon Iver will return to The Farm to offer two completely unique sets on Saturday, while Bassnectar will play well past 1 a.m. at the Which Stage on Friday. Of course, we are also happy to welcome Future and our old pal Sturgill Simpson to the What Stage for the first time, too. Electronic musicians have been a key part of the Bonnaroo experience since the beginning and, last year, we carved out a permanent, open-air, late-night-friendly home for dance music on The Farm known as The Other. That’s in addition to the perennial favorite Kalliope, an all-night dance party known for its pyro, predawn sunrise sets and pop-up shows by the likes of Pretty Lights and Skrillex. This year, we are pumped to introduce Day-Break, a brand-new,

shaded chill-zone built around Kalliope that will screen classic films like Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, and Elf. Kalliope’s resident DJs will also use the space to serenade you with some choice beats while you take a breath between the next leg of your musical marathon. The SuperJam has long become synonymous with Bonnaroo and this year’s signature offering will double as a tribute to the legendary Tom Petty. We were proud to host Petty in both 2006— when he brought along Stevie Nicks!— and in 2013. On Friday, an all-star cast will honor our favorite Heartbreaker. Led by Patrick Hallahan, who has played Bonnaroo more than almost any artist as a member of My Morning Jacket, and Craig Pfunder of VHS or Beta, Into the Great Wide Open—A SuperJam™ Celebrating The Music of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers will weave in a who’s who of Roo performers —as well as some super-secret surprise guests. And, speaking of class-act celebrations, this year, we are also beyond excited to welcome the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. The Nashville-based radio program has rarely, in its 92-year history, taken its famed show outside Music City and, on Sunday, That Tent will join New York’s Carnegie Hall and Washington, D.C.’s

Kennedy Center as one of a few esteemed stages that have hosted this true American institution. Opry members Bobby Bare, Del McCoury Band, Old Crow Medicine Show and Riders in the Sky will all appear alongside rising stars Brothers Osborne, LANCO, Lucie Silvas and others. (True fact: Both Del and Old Crow played that very first Bonnaroo back in 2002.) A big part of that Bonnaroo magic is what happens off stage too, and we hope you’ll spend some time exploring our 800-acre home. Whether it’s circling around Centeroo, taking a dip in our fountain oasis or exploring one of the many parties taking place in our newly refreshed PLAZAs, we are confident that there’s something new and exciting for each and every Bonnaroovian this year. The number 17 is synonymous with a desire for peace and love for all of humanity, and we can’t think of a better way to describe our utopian city. We can’t wait to celebrate our 17 th birthday with you!

A WORD ABOUT OUR PARTNERS

A

nother year back on The Farm… What a ride it’s been, and we’re ready to continue the journey! Year after year, our success would not be possible without the partners who, like us, are dedicated to fostering a unique Bonnaroo experience for every attendee, artist and staff member. We would like to sincerely thank all of our partners for supporting our creativity, our community and all of our social good endeavors. Our friends @MillerLite are back with The New Music on Tap Lounge, boasting an awesome lineup of up-and-coming bands. The constant curators at Red Bull Music Academy will bring some musical prodigies to the Christmas Barn and Silent Disco. Come by the Oasis at BACARDí Bay to experience (real) sand under your feet and play some volleyball while sipping on a refreshing BACARDí cocktail. And Lay’s is joining us this weekend for their Bonnaroo debut with Flavor of the Fest. Wanna impress your BonnaBOO? Exercise with our friends at Asics and keep your mind and body sound all weekend. Over in the campgrounds, stop by The Campout with Coleman located in the B-Hive (PLAZA 4) for a chance to win premium camping gear, chill to some tunes and participate in a communal art project. Need to look fly? Head over to the LG LaundROO Lounge to wash the day away with clean clothes and refresh your festival look. Hungry? Keep your eyes open for pop-up snack surprises from our friends at Lärabar, Nature Valley, Old El Paso and Totino’s. No festival experience would be complete without TLC from our best neighbors at State Farm—be sure to swing by the Neighborhood of Good to hang with friends. There are hundreds of adventures ahead, so wander off the beaten path and discover the magic. Again, we would like to extend a thank you to all of our partners, whose support not only makes Bonnaroo possible, but also makes it a more enjoyable weekend for all Bonnaroovians.

GENERAL INFORMATION ENTRY POLICY The Neighborhood

While Bonnaroo can often feel like you’re on another planet, we are located in the hustle and bustle of a fully functioning city. We look for your help to respect the local neighbors and businesses during your time in Manchester—obey pedestrian rules and respect anyone you may come in contact with. Remember, we are guests here. Show everyone some Bonnaroo love.

Wristbands

We use an ultrahigh security wristband system called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) that equips each wristband with its own uniquely coded chip. Wristbands must be worn at all times. Your wristband will be scanned when you enter the tollbooths and each time you enter/exit the Tower or Arch entrances into Centeroo. Do not tamper with your wristband in any way. Do not cut it, burn it, stretch it, fold, spindle or mutilate it. Altered wristbands will be invalid, and any person in possession of an altered wristband will be charged a

10

replacement fee or may be ejected from the festival site. If you have any questions or problems with your wristband (even if it itches), then visit one of the two Wristband Customer Service stations located at the Tower entrance and The Arch entrance to Centeroo. NOTE: You MUST register your wristband in order to enter the festival. This can be done online or through the mobile app.

RE-ENTRY POLICY In+ Out of Campgrounds in a Vehicle

We hope you won’t need to leave our little utopia during the festival. But if you do, please wait until Friday evening to give everyone a chance to arrive, unless there is a serious emergency. It is best to arrive on The Farm with enough supplies to last you the whole weekend. If you forget something, then we’ve got you covered. There are two General Stores onsite offering a variety of items for all your weekend needs. Anytime you leave the campgrounds, you’ll have to go through another vehicle search when you return (just like you were entering for the first time). Remember, you may only exit through the East and West Tollbooths.

In + Out of Campgrounds on Foot

You may leave and re-enter the event grounds on foot at any time and as often as you like, but only through the East and West Tollbooths. You must be scanned out by our staff and scanned back in when you return. VERY IMPORTANT: If you do not have your wristband scanned out, then you will not be allowed to re-enter the site. It’s obvious, but we have to say it: Do not attempt to leave through Highway Tollbooth, even if you originally came in there. It’s a highway. It’s dangerous. What would your mother say?

Camping and Parking Vehicle Passes All vehicles entering the festival site MUST have a valid vehicle pass. If you are camping with your car in GA, then you will need a Car Camping Pass. If you will be driving in daily and parking, then you will need a Day Parking Pass. The Day Parking lot opens on Thursday at 8 a.m. and Day Parking passes will not be accepted prior to this time. All vehicle passes can be purchased on the Bonnaroo website.

official vehicles through. All specialty programs will come with a program-specific vehicle pass. This includes VIP, Groop Camping, Le Bon Tents and Community Camping. Additionally, VIP and Platinum ticket holders will receive a vehicle pass.

CAMPING/ CAMPGROUNDS Camping The campgrounds are conveniently divided into sections by streets (East-West) and avenues (North-South). Each General Admission Campground section is strategically named on the official Bonnaroo Site Map so you can find your way home, and tell people where to find you. The campgrounds will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2018. As a safety measure, there will be no open fires

Emergency Vehicle Access

Our roads may not look like city streets, but for emergency and maintenance vehicles, they are efficient—as long as they stay clear. Please do not walk in the middle of the road. Walk in the wide shoulders to let

11

allowed inside the festival grounds. (This specifically includes the campgrounds.) Please exercise extraordinary caution with matches, disposal of cigarette butts and any other type of open flame.

Family Camping

Family Camping has always been a part of the Bonnaroo community. This year, we want to invite families who want to camp in a chill, family-friendly environment to sign up in advance to participate. The Family Camping area is located in the General Admission Campgrounds, so fans must have a regular Bonnaroo Car Camping Pass to bring a vehicle into the designated Family Camping area. There is no additional cost to camp in this area beyond the Camping Pass. When you arrive at Bonnaroo, let the Tollbooth staff know you are in Family Camping and they will mark your vehicle to help parking staff direct you to the Family Camping area.

Patrons with Disabilities: Accessible Camping & Parking The Accessible Camping and Accessible Day Parking areas are close to the entrance of Centeroo and are reserved for fans with mobility impairments. A government-issued accessible parking license plate, placard or hangtag is required to use these areas. For more information about the Access Program: bonnaroo.com/accessibility.

12

PLAZAs

Camping at Bonnaroo is hardly “camping” by most definitions of the word (unless your local park offers free Wi-Fi, karaoke, showers, celebrity surprises, late-night parties and more…sounds like an awesome park). PLAZAs are strategically located public places throughout the campgrounds for the community to gather, enjoy art and activities, as well as have access to amenities, info, medical or other safety needs. No matter where you’re camping, you’ll have a PLAZA nearby. We’re taking inspiration from the most beautiful public spaces around the world that bring people together as a community to have an awesome time. Previously called “PODS”, PLAZAs have so many fun improvements coming your way that they simply felt too big to fit into something called a POD… check out some of what we’ve got in store below, and keep an eye out for more updates before the festival including more structures like The Grind and The Garage! ALL PLAZAs INCLUDE: Shade, free public Wi-Fi, showers, fun activities and art, charging stations, Clean Vibes Trading Post redemption centers, misting stations, medical staff, safety stations, information and portable restrooms.

Bathrooms

In 2016, we debuted our fancy new permanent bathrooms. Aside from the permanent structures, we will have a mixture of vacuum toilets and port-o-johns available throughout the campgrounds to meet all of your urgent needs. They are cleaned frequently, but they are also used frequently, so please do your part to make the porta-potty experience as clean and enjoyable (maybe that’s not the right word) as possible. Use them only to deposit what nature intended and help keep them clean. With that being said, please DO NOT dispose of any sanitary wipes in any of the bathrooms. Remember the Golden Rule of public toilets: Leave them as you’d like to find them. Bathrooms in the GA Campgrounds are the traditional portable affairs, equipped with hand sanitizer units and seat covers. Those in the VIP Campground are more—ahem—commodious. There are also hand sanitizers and stand-alone handwashing units in each bathroom—please use them!

Hand Washing + Water Stations

Hand-washing stations are located at each PLAZA as well as in Centeroo, so you can brush those teeth, wet that face and cleanse that soul. The water at these stations is 100% filtered and drinkable, so feel free to fill up your water bottles. Remember, this is not your bathtub— there are showers for bathing.

Showers Showers can be found at most PLAZA locations, indicated on your festival map. Showers are operated and cleaned by our very own shower fairies during hours of operation: Wednesday from 9 p.m.-12 a.m. at PLAZAs 2, 3 + 10, and Thursday-Sunday from 6 a.m.-2 a.m. at all locations. On Monday, showers will be open from 6 a.m.11 a.m. Showers cost $10 during peak hours (daily between 6 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6 p.m.-10 p.m.)

Bonnaroo Golf Cart Service For a fee, we offer a golf-cart taxi service to help you get around the campgrounds. Designated routes are indicated on your festival map and the taxis are clearly marked, so be on the lookout—flag one down to catch a ride!

13

SAFETY INFO Safety Staff

You can find our safety staff roaming through the campground—at every PLAZA, the entrances to Centeroo and the Main Venue and at all the stages, as well as throughout all of Centeroo and the Main Venue. Any staff member at the Tollbooths can answer any questions or concerns you may have entering the festival. Our safety (aka, security) staff is trained to help make sure everyone has a good time and stays safe. If you have a security issue in the campgrounds, then each PLAZA has a security station open 24 hours. Mounted security patrols (yes, on horseback!) roam the campground areas at all times and can assist as well. Lasso one if you need help. All vehicles will be searched upon entry to the festival at the Tollbooths (which you should definitely keep in mind when deciding what to bring). And prepare to be (politely) searched each time you enter Centeroo or the Main Venue. Remember, our security staff is truly here to help... whatever the issue may be.

14

Medical Tents

Lots of things can happen on The Farm: bee stings, arm-wrestling injuries, faces rocked off while dancing. That’s why the Main Venue, Centeroo and every PLAZA is home to a Bonnaroo medical tent, staffed around the clock with licensed medical staff. The medical tents are a “Safe Haven.” In Centeroo, a medical tent is located nearby the new Oasis area and the Silent Disco— look for the balloon overhead. In the Main Venue, medical services are located near The Arch entrance as well as behind the Guest Bleachers at the What Stage. Medical staff is always on duty. In an emergency, if you’re not near a medical tent, find a staff person with a radio or notify the nearest security personnel so that they can get you whatever help you may need.

Food Safety

Please don’t buy from unlicensed vendors. We work hard to ensure that all official food and drink is good and safe. And really, if you buy something from an unlicensed vendor, you have no idea what you’re getting. There is a lot of great stuff to buy from official Bonnaroo vendors, who deserve your business, and have made a real commitment to support Bonnaroo.

CENTEROO / MAIN VENUE Hours of Operation

Centeroo is the heart of the festival. It opens at noon on Thursday, June 7, and will stay open nonstop, just like Las Vegas, until 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 10. Adjacent to Centeroo is the Main Venue, where the What Stage is located. The Main Venue opens at 2 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and closes after the What Stage headliner takes their last bow. When you enter these areas, you’ll be searched and you must show your all-powerful wristband. You do not need to purchase a ticket for the various activities throughout Centeroo, with the exception of the Ferris Wheel and the Big Ass Water Slide.

Bag Policy (NEW)

We have a NEW Bag Policy for Centeroo & Main Venue this year. Please make sure to plan accordingly for your trip into Centeroo. Here are the restrictions on bag/sizing: Clear Bags up to 20” x 15” x 9”, Clear ZipTop Bag up to one gallon, waist pack or Fanny-Pack, Small Clutch Bag up to 4.5” x 5.5”, Empty Hydration pack up to 20” x 15” x 9” with a limit of 2 pockets. For additional details on items allowed into Centeroo & the Main Venue please visit bonnaroo.com.

Totem Guidelines (NEW)

A few notes about Totems. All Totems must be 7 feet tall or UNDER. All Totem poles my be PVC pipe, light wood or aluminum. No more than an inch in diameter. No sharp edges or offenseive language please. There 15

will be NO Totems allowed in front of the soundboard. All Totems must be behind the soundboard at any stage or they will be confiscated.

What Is Not Allowed Inside Centeroo + Main Venue

No cans or glass bottles of any kind. No alcohol, video recording devices, professional photography equipment or cameras with detachable lenses longer than 2 inches (point-and-shoot cameras without additional lenses are OK), laser pens or focused-light devices, lawn chairs, folding chairs that sit higher than a foot off the ground, or anything that might impair the sight of other spectators (like flags, umbrellas or shade structures) or is prohibited anywhere else on the festival grounds. We reserve the right to add items to this list if necessary. All patrons are subject to a search by Bonnaroo security personnel upon entry into Centeroo and the Main Venue. Please be advised that Bonnaroo and its

16

promoters, performers and staff will not be responsible for any items that are confiscated during search procedures.

Barricade Arrangements at the What and Which Stages

Following the model of most European festivals, we have implemented a double barricade system in the very front of the What Stage and the Which Stage. This system allows more fans access to the up-front experience over the course of the weekend. As shown in the diagram, the entrances to the pit areas are located at the front of the stage on each side. A queue will be created on both sides along the venue walls. Each pit will be cleared after each performance, allowing a new group of fans to enter the area. You are not allowed to remain in the area to wait for the next concert. If you want to be in a pit for any of the performances at the What or Which Stage, please be sure to get in line well before the performance is scheduled to

begin. And keep in mind, you must follow the instructions of all security personnel, who work actively to ensure that you and everyone around you enjoy a great concert experience. General Stores There are two General Stores located on the festival grounds—both in the campgrounds. General Stores are open from 9 a.m.–3 a.m. during the festival (closing earlier on Sunday night) and offer personal hygiene items, batteries, disposable cameras, ice, beer, water, soda, food—you get the picture.

GENERAL INFO Locker Rentals For a fee, lockers are available to stash your stuff in during the festival. Lockers can be found inside the Main Venue right past The Arch and are accessible all weekend long. Info Booths

There are two main Info Booths on the festival grounds—one inside the Main Venue (near The Arch), and the other in Centeroo. Both are noted on your festival map. You’ll also find Satellite Info Booths located at each PLAZA. PLAZA Info Booths stay open 24 hours until Monday. The Centroo Info Booth will close at 10 p.m. on Sunday. The Main Venue Info Booth is only open during main venue events. Lost + Found Lost + Found is located at PLAZA 4. If you lose something, or someone, check there first. If it (or they) are not there the first time, then check again later. And if you find something that needs to be returned to its owner, please drop it off at PLAZA 4 next to The Tower or at any Info Booth on the festival site. Lost + Found will close at noon on Monday. You may also look for and/or claim your lost items in our online database at bonnaroo.com/lostandfound.

17

Telephones + Service

There is a cellphone tower on the property, but with so many Bonnaroovians texting and sending photos to jealous friends back home, service can be inconsistent. If you have an emergency and need access to a phone, visit any Info Booth for assistance.

ATMs

If you need cash, ATMs can be found in Centeroo, the Main Venue, at the General Stores and at PLAZAs. All locations are clearly marked on your festival map.

Clean Vibes Help Keep the Scene Clean

With great fun comes great responsibility. Please help Clean Vibes, our heroic trash and recycling crew, by keeping your site and the concert areas clean. Recycle, compost and pick up after yourself. What goes where: RECYCLING: Place in recycling collection bins throughout site and blue bags at your campsite. All plastic containers, aluminum and tin cans, glass, clean mixed paper, drink cartons, plastic packaging and grocery bags can be recycled this year. COMPOST: Place all food waste and other compostables in compost collection bins throughout the site or in clear bags at your campsite. (Do not contaminate with trash.)

18

All plates, cups, forks and other food service items sold by festival vendors are compostable. CIGARETTE BUTTS: Place in butt bins located throughout Centeroo for recycling or collect and turn them in at the Clean Vibes Trading Post for prizes. LANDFILL: If it can’t be recycled or composted, then place it in the landfill collection bins throughout the site or in a clear bag at your campsite. Styrofoam, chip bags, ice cream and candy wrappers should go in this bin. When the music stops, please clean up your campsite. (Get extra bags at your PLAZA.) Pick up bottle caps and any other debris. Tie up your bags and leave them at the edge of the road. We’ll take it from there. Collect cans, cups, and bottles or cigarette butts using a bag from the Clean Vibes Trading Post in Planet Roo and trade them in for points to redeem for a variety of great prizes.

Soberoo

Soberoo is a group of passionate, likeminded music fans who choose to remain drug-free and alcohol-free at the festival. The group holds meetings daily at noon, 4 p.m., 8 p.m. and midnight. (There is no midnight meeting on Sunday.) Look for the yellow balloons and get full details at the Soberoo Tent located across from That Tent in Centeroo.

This year, we will host a “morning stretch/ spiritual strength” session at 10 a.m. and a guided meditation at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. PLEASE NOTE: Soberoo has absolutely no opinion on the issue of drugs and alcohol, and neither condemns or condones it. Our simple purpose is to provide support and information to those who seek the comfort and camaraderie of other clean and sober people at the festival. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stay substance-free at Bonnaroo. Though Soberoo consists primarily of those recovering from addiction, we are open to anyone who wishes to remain clean and sober this weekend.

INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN

How this year’s SuperJam will honor a Bonnaroo legend BY RAFFAELA KENNY-CINCOTTA

28

PHOTO: John Patrick Gatta

T

om Petty is everywhere: His voice lives in your headphones and his style manifests in your closet; his rock-star attitude reverberates in your favorite band’s strut, and his lyrics cycle through your psyche, ready for a sing-along to “American Girl” or “Free Fallin’” at any moment. Even here at Bonnaroo, you can find Tom Petty. His spirit has been ingrained in the festival’s identity since he first headlined the main stage in 2006 and gloriously returned in 2013. “I predict we’re going to have an incredible time tonight,” he told a crowd of thousands at Bonnaroo five years ago. And although the singer departed far too soon— he passed on Oct. 2 at the age of 66—this year’s SuperJam will pick up where Petty left off. Into The Great Wide Open will celebrate Petty in the best way possible, by playing his favorite tunes and culling the type of infectious energy he was famous for. In the words of Josh Roth, senior director of programming at Superfly, Into The Great Wide Open is something that the Bonnaroo community needs. While everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Coldplay has paid tribute to Petty in the musical sense, this year’s SuperJam aims to do much more than recant his songbook. It will be “a cathartic way to honor one of the all-time greats.” Into The Great Wide Open will also elevate Bonnaroo’s annual SuperJam beyond what is usually an amazing party to create an event that is as fun as it is heartfelt. The goal is to honor Petty’s legacy while simultaneously creating an

atmosphere of love, community and passion for some of the best rock-and-roll ever written. The SuperJam house band is made up of a fleet of famous rockers including My Morning Jacket’s Patrick Hallahan and Tom Blankenship, as well as Pat Sansone (Wilco), Craig Pfunder (VHS or Beta), Mark Charles Heidinger (Vandaveer), Daniel Creamer (The Texas Gentlemen) and The Watson Twins. The entire set is the brainchild of longtime friends and Louisville, Ky. natives, Hallahan and Pfunder, who conceived the idea as they digested the seriousness of Petty’s passing. “Patrick and I called one another and were in a little bit of shock and disbelief,” Pfunder says of the day Petty died. “More than anything, we each were sad about it. And so we decided to meet up, have a couple of cocktails, and give each other a hug and see how we felt. Then it quickly turned from: ‘Man, this sucks’ into ‘Man, we should do something. We should play some Petty tunes.’” “This was our way to say thank you to him and the band for everything they’ve meant to us and to American music in general,” Hallahan adds. “We brought that concept to the Bonnaroo people and then we selected all the songs to be played and put together the house band that is going to be playing with us.” Hallahan’s connection to Tom Petty is twofold. On one hand, like most music lovers, Tom Petty’s music was omnipresent, always playing in the background, year in and year out. 29

“Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers has been the soundtrack of my life,” he explains. “There are just so many songs that are just a part of our everyday lives. He had such a wide reach on different kinds of listeners. Because of his no-nonsense songwriting style, it appealed and affected so many different people. Honestly, it’s just been a lifelong source of inspiration for me.” As the drummer for My Morning Jacket, Hallahan also had the opportunity to play as the opening act for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 2010. He peeked behind the curtain and observed the legendary band’s famous work ethic up close and personal. “We got to see what caliber of people they were, and I got inspired once again by them in how well they ran their band and how well they treated us. They were so sweet, and I know other people who have opened for them as well and it’s a straight story across the board. They were in it for the music, they were a gang of good people and they just never ceased to inspire. We have to pay homage to their power.” The drummer has a long history with Bonnaroo dating back to My Morning Jacket’s first show at the festival in 2003, only a year after he joined the band. The Jacket have continued to grow with Bonnaroo over the years, returning a staggering six times for a mix of guest-heavy marathon shows and other career-defining performances. Hallahan also took part in an official SuperJam featuring Dr. John, Dan Auerbach, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and others in 2011. Superfly 30

co-founder Kerry Black went so far as to call MMJ one of the festival’s most iconic acts. In the interest of creating the best SuperJam possible, Hallahan and Pfunder put together a roster of special guests that features country singer extraordinaire Sheryl Crow, Sameer Gadhia of Young the Giant, Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso, David Shaw of The Revivalists, Moon Taxi, Vanessa Carlton, Langhorne Slim, Japanese Breakfast, Frenship, Rayland Baxter, Bucky Baxter, Durand Jones & The Indications, Larkin Poe, The Wild Feathers and Jalen N’Gonda. And, like any SuperJam, there are sure to be special guests and surprises. In Pfunder’s eyes, Into The Great Wide Open is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for musicians of all walks of life to get behind a singular goal. “It’s kind of like being able to go to the NBA All-Star Game, watching all these people that you normally see playing against each other, but they’re playing together. It’s such a cool thing.” Grappling with the loss of a musician like Tom Petty is never easy, but Into The Great Wide Open will give Halahan, Pfunder and the entire Bonnaroo family a place to sing, dance and savor Petty’s massive musical contribution to our lives. “The prerequisite of this [SuperJam] was that you had to love Tom Petty, because this is an emotional show for us,” says Hallahan. “It was very important that it wasn’t just someone going through the motions. If you’re here, you really want to be here, because this our wake for Tom Petty. This is our send-off.”

JUST SOUTHEAST OF NASHVILLE Del McCoury, Old Crow Medicine Show and their Americana brethren are coming back to Bonnaroo—and they’re bringing the Grand Ole Opry with them. BY JEFF TAMARKIN

42

M

anchester, Tenn., lies approximately 61 miles southeast of Nashville, but for two hours on Sunday evening, June 10, the two locales will wondrously share the same space. The history-making convergence—called Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo—will see the Opry, the legendary Nashville-originated radio program and live concert now in its 92nd year, staging a show within a show at the renowned Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Starring Opry members Bobby Bare, the Del McCoury Band, Old Crow Medicine Show and Riders in the Sky, as well as Brothers Osborne, LANCO, Nikki Lane and Lucie Silvas, Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo marks a rare venture outside of Nashville for the cultural institution. For one participant, Old Crow Medicine Show co-founder Ketch Secor, it’s a natural fit. “It’s really great for the Opry, for Bonnaroo and for Tennessee,” he says. “The Grand Ole Opry has a real legacy in American music, and it has the responsibility to make that legacy known to an increasingly younger audience.” “What we’re doing at Bonnaroo is very similar to what we do anywhere from two to seven nights a week in Nashville on a regular basis,” says Sally Williams, senior vice president of artist relations and programming for Opry Entertainment Group. “The Opry fits nicely with some of the more roots-oriented things that Bonnaroo has been doing throughout its history. It’s a very diverse show.” Country music and Americana have been a part of the Bonnaroo mix since day one:

Old Crow Medicine Show performed on the very first night of the very first festival back in 2002, and the Del McCoury Band, also featured on June’s inaugural Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo, were also on the bill that year. As Secor puts it, Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo is “part of the festival’s original game plan, which was to offer something to every demographic of listenership—the widest spectrum of popular music.” The Grand Ole Opry’s importance within the cultural fabric of American music is indelible. Founded as a one-hour barn dance in November 1925, it has broadcast continually on Nashville’s WSM, a 50,000watt AM radio station, reaching thousands of cities and towns across America and beyond. In addition to mainstream country music, the Opry has traditionally incorporated bluegrass, gospel, folk, blues, Americana and even comedy—all performed live in front of an audience. The vast majority of the most important country music artists of the past century have performed at the Opry, with many serving as lifelong members. Bobby Bare, one of the artists coming to Bonnaroo this year, first became a member back in 1964! The Grand Ole Opry was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1992. Grand Ole Opry at Bonnaroo will play on the program’s flagship home station, WSM (650 on the AM dial), as well as on opry. com and wsmonline.com, and on the Opry and WSM mobile apps. Station personality Bill Cody will serve as the show’s announcer, 43

with Old Crow Medicine Show hosting. For Opry Entertainment Group’s Williams, the opportunity for the Bonnaroo audience to witness, and in essence to be a part of, this historic live radio event is not to be missed. The performers, she notes, are likely to go places musically that they may never get a chance to normally. “For artists, the Opry is very different,” she says. “Typically, they perform between three and five songs on the Opry, so a couple of things happen. They’re very thoughtful about what those songs are, and it gives them the opportunity to stretch a little bit further than they might in their normal set because it’s a different context. So, they might do a classic country song that they don’t have as part of their set, or there’s a lot of collaboration. I think that we’ll see that on the Bonnaroo show. You may see artists performing together that might not otherwise have the opportunity to

do that.” She adds, “Two of the artists are also performing their own shows. Old Crow Medicine Show on Saturday and the Brothers Osborne on Sunday.” For Williams, a big part of the lure of the Opry program at Bonnaroo—which echoes that of the wildly diverse festival overall—is the possibility of being introduced to new music. “The Opry, over the years, has been such a great discovery mechanism for music fans,” she says. “You go to an Opry show and it’s unlikely that you will have heard everybody on the show; you’re going to be exposed to something else. When fans come to see the show at Bonnaroo, maybe they’re coming to see Old Crow Medicine Show and they’ll get turned on to Bobby Bare, a Country Music Hall of Famer and one of the greatest badass outlaw songwriters and legends. Or maybe they’ll be exposed to LANCO, which is a new, very contemporary country band. Or they’ll see Nikki Lane or Lucie Silvas.”

Old Crow Medicine Show

44

Old Crow’s Secor agrees, and adds that the significance of the Grand Ole Opry itself is a compelling reason to check out the collaboration. “If you love music, then you’ve got to take a look at what the Grand Ole Opry did, no matter if you like hip-hop or classical music,” he says. “The Grand Ole Opry is a force that has Del McCoury drawn together many musical forms. Whether or not you like banjos and guitars, the Grand Ole Opry is something that your grandmother and grandfather, regardless of race, class, creed or region, may have enjoyed—because its radio signal reached 40 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean and launched stars around the world. This is a major musical force.” For the Opry itself, the decision to showcase in such a high-profile manner outside of Nashville is a major indicator that it’s seeking to broaden its reach. While Williams notes that the Opry has staged tours outside of Nashville—most famously at such prestigious venues as New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center—the Bonnaroo affiliation marks the first time that the program has teamed up with a festival. The fact that the festival in

question happens to be Bonnaroo, known primarily for presenting artists working within such a large range of genres, is an acknowledgement that both the Opry and the festival are actively seeking to widen the definition of what they do. “It’s really exciting to think that there’s going to be a bunch of music lovers who are going to experience it and understand it,” says Williams. “And hopefully, at some point they’ll come and see the show at the Opry House or at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Further, I see the Opry as ground zero for country music so it’s important to help the genre, and all the tentacles of it, push out to new audiences.” “The Grand Ole Opry is an American musical institution,” adds Secor. “It’s America’s longest-running radio broadcast, going on longer than NBC News, longer than ESPN. It’s been the Grand Ole Opry for nearly 93 years! It’s always been really cool and very revolutionary. If you’re going to come to Tennessee to hear live music, then you’ve got to know about what the greatest live music tastemaker was. This is a historic reckoning that the Grand Ole Opry is coming to rockand-roll’s premier event.” 45

ALL NIGHT LONG

How electronic music found a home at Bonnaroo BY RAFFAELA KENNY-CINCOTTA

46

S

ince its inception in 2002, Bonnaroo has embraced the eclectic, presenting everything from bluegrass to hip-hop to classic rock. And long before the genre was synonymous with all-night outdoor festival ragers, electronic music was a key part of the Bonnaroo experience. Last year, Bonnaroo’s producers proved their commitment to electronic music on The Farm by creating The Other, an open-air stage dedicated exclusively to dance music. According to Bobby Clay—the talent buyer for C3 Productions who oversaw the creation of this year’s dance lineup—the goal of The Other Stage was to create a home for electronic acts, and give them a stage designed for the genre’s unique demands. It is filled with bright lights and big speakers, “where we can be loud, where we can go crazy and where music goes later than any other stage in the park,” Clay says. Boasting a lineup that includes Kaskade, Virtual Self, Alison Wonderland, Carnage, The Glitch Mob, Gryffin, What So Not, Kayzo, Slander, Hippie Sabotage, Big Wild, Shiba San, Snakehips, Mr. Carmack, Valentino Khan, Opiou, k?d, Chris Lake, Billy Kenny B2B Mija, Space Jesus, Manic Focus, Boogie T B2B Squinto, Said The Sky, Melvv, LOUDPVCK, CloZee, Droeloe, Taska Black and Justin Jays Fantastic Voyage, The Other Stage also showcases acts from every part of the dance music spectrum. “It’s tough with dance music because there’s so many different subgenres and there are many subtle nuances to dance

music,” Clay explains. “I do my best to identify who is coming to Bonnaroo, who wants to see who, what is interesting, what is credible, what is cool, what is fun. And I try to find acts that are one of those or all of those wrapped into one.” For example, a group like Virtual Self— Porter Robinson’s new project that has only been on a festival stage once prior—is far different than an artist who has a larger live footprint like Gryffin. As Clay sees it, there are only so many slots on The Other Stage

47

lineup, so festival organizers aim to serve as many different tastes as possible on a daily basis. It’s all about sorting through the noise and identifying who is hot right now and who is on the verge of becoming the next big thing. That being said, what brings all of these musicians and their fans together is an overwhelming love for music. At any given point, a dance music fanatic, a hip-hop head and an indie-music apostle can cross paths, and perhaps turn one another on to a new style of music. “I feel like that’s what makes Bonnaroo so special,” Clay explains. “Every walk of life

The Major Players: Charting Dance-Music History at Bonnaroo

48

can have their cake and eat it too. That’s one of the many things that makes me so excited to work on this project.” Bonnaroo is all about community, and with almost 24 hours of live-music programming a day, strangers can become friends in no time. Additionally, thanks to the surprise-filled Kalliope— the mysterious stage at Centeroo that hosts electronic music all night— Bonnaroovians have a place get wild by moonlight and, eventually, sunrise. “We have so many surprises for Kalliope. I can’t share who or what they are, but from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., it’s going to be quite the party,” Clay attests.

PERFORMED IN 2010, 2011, 2015

Though they’re not a band to pin into a single genre, Sound Tribe Sector Nine helped pave the way for electronic music at Bonnaroo with their signature mix of synthesizers and jamstyle improv.

Returning to Bonnaroo this year for the fourth time, Bassnectar was one of the first American dance acts to dominate the festival scene with an in-your-face bass sound. His sets are wild and untamed, which is exactly what a music festival should be.

In the past, Kalliope has offered secret sets by Skrillex, Odesza and Cherub with mind-blowing lights and eye-popping pyrotechnics. Sure, staying up all night isn’t an easy feat, but for attendees who plan their year around Bonnaroo, Kalliope is the perfect place to party. According to Clay, it remains one of the most talked-about aspects of the Bonnaroo experience. “For a lot of people, this is their one time to completely cut loose in the summer, and they want to get after it; they want to go for it,” Clay explains. “And Bonnaroo absolutely caters to those who want to take in the full, all-night, nocturnal experience.” Creating the Bonnaroo lineup is tricky business, and organizers strive to simultaneously push the envelope and honor the core spirit of Bonnaroo every year. The festival’s dance offerings stand out

PRETTY LIGHTS

PERFORMED IN 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015

Pretty Lights’ sunrise set at Bonnaroo 2013 gave fans goosebumps, and opened many minds to the power of a turntable. He also threw in his “After Midnight” remix, giving a nod to his musical forefathers like J.J. Cale and the Allman Brothers Band.

sonically, but there are also commonalities between these acts and the rest of the Bonnaroo family. “To a degree, some of the dance stuff that we book now at the festival shares the same creed and ethos of that initial jamband spirit that Bonnaroo was known for,” Clay says. “It’s different, but with its communityvibe, freedom and welcomeness, dance music is essentially the same.” A genre-bending sense of musical harmony is obtainable at Bonnaroo. If it’s possible anywhere, then it’s possible here. “The festivalgoing patron is younger, loves hip-hop and loves dance music, and we want to cater to that, but we also want to cater to those who want to see Bon Iver, Sturgill Simpson, Anderson .Paak, Rebelution or The Revivalists,” Clay says. “Everyone can coexist at a festival; everyone can appreciate everything that’s there.”

Though he’s been behind a number of epic Bonnaroo moments, Skrillex’s 2014 SuperJam performance bridged genre and generation gaps when he welcomed everyone from A$AP Ferg to Mickey Hart onstage.

Representing a more cerebral side of electronic music, Flume and his downtempo sound prove that there’s room for all different variations of dance music at Bonnaroo.

HAPPY ROO DAY

Expanding the Bonnaroo Community Experience BY MATT INMAN

50

A

nyone who’s ever walked more than 10 or so feet around Bonnaroo knows that a huge part of the experience—along with the music, of course—is the community of people and the atmosphere of togetherness that is fostered by the festival each summer. Shouts of “Happy Roo!” abound, and strangers become friends within minutes. Last year, Bonnaroo organizers began an initiative to further this community experience with additional programming based in the festival’s campgrounds. More than just a spot to lay your head after a long day of music, Bonnaroo’s campsites have always been where festivalgoers congregate and create their own happy places. And the Roo organizers are expanding on that idea yet again, with a number of new and returning programs for both veteran Bonnaroovians and those fresh to The Farm. The campground experience will center around several numbered PLAZAs—last year they were called PODs—each of which will offer different events from coffee and open-mics to movie screenings and afterhours DJ sets. “This year, we just have a ton of stuff compared to last year,” says Irene LaTempa, who works as Bonnaroo’s Community Builder. “Each PLAZA is its own unique experience. We’re thinking about The Farm as a bucket-list destination, and we’re continuing to make the most of the fact we have 800 acres to create experiences in. This is really about being on The Farm, together.”

Another focus of this year’s Community Experience is spreading awareness of sexual assault and educating festivalgoers on prevention. Bonnaroo teamed up with RAINN, the largest anti-sexual assault organization in the United States, to provide Bonnaroovians with accurate information regarding assault prevention. Bonnaroo staff and volunteers are taking a consent class from Calling All Crows, a nonprofit focused on the improvement of musicfestival culture, which will also be available at the Solar Stage; the SheRoo women’s group camping has confirmed speakers like Ericka Hart, a sexuality educator and adjunct at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. “It’s just a no-brainer that we remind everyone that there’s a zero-tolerance policy at Bonnaroo, while talking to people about consent,” LaTempa says. “It’s really a proactive initiative. We just want to say, ‘On The Farm, we can and should do better.’ We see that this is a problem everywhere in the world. Just as we don’t allow plastic on The Farm, we want people to not allow any kind of harassment to happen and to take that back to their home communities.” LeTempa notes that she and her fellow organizers really wanted to make the PLAZA offerings part of the GA experience at Bonnaroo. Though some activities do come with an extra cost—for example, paying for food at the communal barbecue with Tim Love—the majority of the activities are meant to be incorporated into regular life on The Farm. 51

Here are just a few of the many Bonnaroo Community Experience highlights to look forward to: PLAZA 9’s new barn is home to Happy Roo Day! which features several activities curated by Matt Shultz, the irrepressible frontman of Kentucky-based rockers Cage the Elephant. Among the PLAZA’s happenings throughout the weekend will be “Saturday” Morning Cartoons, birthday card making, painting and more, all geared toward celebrating your own personal Roo Day and providing the opportunity to “Roocharge, Roolax, Rooflect and Rooset.” “Matt is not only a veteran artist of the festival, but he also attended as a fan,” LaTempa says, noting that Shultz submitted a proposal with many more ideas that may be implemented in future years. “Being a local from the Southeast, a lot of his first

52

exposure to culture outside of his hometown was through Bonnaroo. He had a huge interest in participating, and he’s led all the creative direction for this PLAZA. It comes from his desire to create an experience for people, to be able to invite people to think outside the box. Happy Roo Day! is all about being born anew. Every day, we all have the opportunity to start again, and Bonnaroo is a time to be reborn. Be who you want to be that day. It’s everybody’s birthday. He’s really excited about it, and we’re excited to give him the space to do it.” PLAZA 7 presents a mix of programming in partnership with Nashville’s Fort Houston, a self-described “makerspace” (which is “like a gym, but for people who build stuff”) that provides individuals with space and tools to make art, launch businesses and more. “We were most interested in working with Bonnaroo because we grew up attending, and we feel like we know all about The Farm and where all the magic can be found,” Fort Houston says. “Now we have an opportunity to expose people to those same feelings and sensations.” The organization will be bringing several Nashville artists to The Farm, offering sculptures, puppets and more, plus some all-vinyl, late-night dance parties. PLAZA 7 also boasts The Ville (formerly known as The Grind)—which will provide Bonnaroovians with coffee and comedy. This year’s lineup of comedians will offer daily sets in the campgrounds—along with open-mic nights, a hammock-filled hangout zone called The Grove and late-night karaoke featuring T-Pain.

PLAZA 6, also known as The Well(ness) PLAZA is a place where festivalgoers can gather and share their love of healthy and mindful activities like yoga and meditation sessions, lessons on the power of crystals and auraology from Atlanta’s Modern Mystic, an after-party celebration for the annual Roo Run and more. The PLAZA will also host programming from Los Angeles-based public broadcasting internet radio station dublab, which will curate Tonalism, a series of allnight, ambient DJ sets from Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel) of The Postal Service and more. According to dublab, Tonalism “comes from a long tradition of the use of sound and music

as a vehicle for healing and inner exploration” and “aims to create a multisensory space that allows the mind to expand from the inside.” There are many more activities and events going on throughout Bonnaroo’s campground PLAZAs, but the best way to learn more is to visit them. “Bonnaroo fans are there to listen to music together, but they are also there to make new friends, and they’re really interested in new kinds of art and culture,” LaTempa says. “And if we can give them a space to do that and to have activities to be a part of, then that’s great. I’m excited to see it all come to life.” 53

WE COULD STOP RIGHT HERE St. Paul & The Broken Bones’ leading light looks back on his long, strange trip from paying Bonnaroo patron to marquee performer. BY PAUL JANEWAY 54

M

y first trip to Bonnaroo was in 2005. At the time, I was working at a tanning bed—that’s right, a tanning bed— about two-and-a-half hours away in Birmingham, Ala. I saw that The Mars Volta were playing and, when I got my paycheck on a Friday, I just decided, “Well, I’m gonna spend the

PHOTO: Dean Budnick

whole thing on a ticket.” And that’s what I did. I was pretty naïve: I slept in my car, which was a terrible decision in retrospect because it was hot as hell, and I couldn’t understand how people were staying up so late to watch the shows. It was a life-changing experience. There was so much music that I hadn’t been exposed to yet; acts that weren’t necessary coming through Birmingham. I made it to The Mars Volta on Friday night, and that’s when I got hooked. I went back the next year and saw Radiohead, who I was a big fan of, and I remember thinking how special it was to hear everyone in the field be dead silent during their set. I loved all the SuperJams—seeing these left-field things that I never thought I would be able to see. That used to be the thing. It was a formative experience. Every year, I would figure out how I could afford to go; I’d work volunteer services or security, where you had a 12-hour shift for minimum wage and then you got to go into the festival for free, which seemed appealing. Though, one time in 2010, I was working while Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z played on Saturday night and I felt something warm running down my back. I looked up and saw this giant running away and thought, “No! This surely didn’t happen.” I was in shock about the whole situation, but I just turned around and said, “I’m gonna watch Jay-Z with pee on my back!” Bonnaroo is such a huge part of my music-loving obsession. When I was

younger, I always felt like I was playing catch-up with music, trying to take in so much so quickly. At the time, pirating music was popular and it was pretty easy to do. So I started to devour as much music as I could, as fast as I could, because I had this love affair. And Bonnaroo was a big part of that because I was getting into bands and then I was getting to see them live, and I believe that a band needs to be really good live if you are truly going to love them. So, when I was younger, I would go to festivals to find new music. When we first started our band, I told my manager that the two things I would love to do before I get done with this are play Bonnaroo and play the Ryman and we did both in 2014. The first time we were fortunate enough to play Bonnaroo, I thought, “We could stop right here and this would have already been pretty amazing.” I just couldn’t believe, in a thousand years, that I was playing something that I had come to as a fan. It was a dream come true. Just the first moment of going out there to soundcheck, I was shocked how many people were there. We had a busy day— our set was around noon and then we had what seemed like 100 interviews as soon as we stepped off the stage. But I did get to share special moment with my girlfriend, who is now my wife, where we got to soak it all in and I told her: “I understand what it’s like to be watching a band and discovering something that you didn’t know was around.” 55

The Grove

In the midst of 700+ acres of farmland lies an oasis; a refuge from the whirlwind that is Bonnaroo...The Grove! There will be times when The Grove explodes with radiant energy, and at other times, it’s a place for solitude and relaxation...you’ll just have to stop by and find out. For 2018, Fort

Houston—an experiential art fabrication lab and maker-space in Nashville, Tenn.—is helping curate PLAZA 7 with local Nashville artists and makers. Typically, you would miss pieces like these on a quick trip to Nashville if you didn’t know the right spots to hit, but now you can find these enchanted works, featuring sculptures, puppets, and more down on The Farm—in The Grove and the barn at The Ville. Artists for 2018 in The Grove include Alex Lockwood, who makes abstract sculptures from colorful material, that is often repurposed or recycled. He builds with one primary component, which is repeated many times to create patterns and structures. His material is often recognizable (bottle caps, shotgun shells, bread tabs and lottery tickets), though not always immediately. A familiar object seen in unfamiliar numbers can be alien at first glance, and Lockwood finds power and beauty in presenting commonplace material on an uncommon scale. Alex Lockwood is a self-taught artist from Seattle. He lives in Nashville with his wife Genie and their two sons Roman and Oscar. Yanira Vissepó is a textile artist located in Nashville, Tenn., who utilizes hand-carved blocks to create imagined scenes, patterns and symbols on a variety of different mediums. Richly textured and transformative of the spaces in which they reside, Vissepó’s patterns take many different forms—from hand-painted and block-printed murals to framed and free-standing tapestries, as well as works on paper. Brett Douglas Hunter is a self-taught artist living and working in Nashville, Tenn.

Originally from Illinois, he comes from a family of self propelled artists and builders. Seemingly destined to be a maker from the beginning, he dove headfirst into the world of sculpture, making weird and wonderful creatures using a fibrous concrete mixture.

Bonnaroo is in a unique position to provide festivalgoers with a space to become involved and amplify their voices. By doing so, Planet Roo serves to emphasize to both patrons and the greater public that the festival is aware of the issues of our times, is dedicated to remaining relevant and is committed to empowering our patrons to make a difference in ways that matter to them. Action matters, hope prevails and, this year, we are creating even more opportunities for all the humans at The Farm to make meaningful community connections. Our mission unites likeminded Bonnaroovians and gives them the tools to be more socially and environmentally responsible in every day. Located in the heart of Centeroo, The Fountain serves as both a way to cool off from the hot Tennessee sun and as a great meeting point. And once the sun sets, black lights transform it into a whole new wonder! This year, The Fountain was designed and painted by the talented Kristin Farr.
