ifteen years—that’s a long time. It seems like only yesterday our Bonnaroovian community was just a sunshine daydream and now, a decade-and-a-half later, our little ecosystem has grown into a rite of passage and a place for all sorts of open-minded and open-eared fans to collectively celebrate the power of live music and community. The first Bonnaroo was an experiment that worked. New Orleans heroes Dirty Dozen Brass Band helped kick off the weekend with an authentic Big Easy second line; future “voices of their generation” like Norah Jones and Jack Johnson turned heads during their breakout performances; and Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio and Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead affirmed Bonnaroo’s commitment to improvisationally minded music. It’s been a crazy ride since that first trip through Centeroo in 2002. Kings of Leon, Mumford & Sons, deadmau5, Florence + The Machine, My Morning Jacket, Grace Potter and The Black Keys all worked their way up through the festival’s ranks from intimate tents to marquee stages. Now-departed legends from B.B. King to Ornette Coleman to Merle Haggard to Bobby Womack and Lemmy used Bonnaroo to connect with new generations of music fans. Cultural torch-bearers like Del McCoury Band and Preservation Hall Jazz Band helped us feel the magic; D’Angelo, Jimmy Buffett, Lionel Richie and Nas made surprise appearances, and everyone from Skrillex to John Oates to John Paul Jones and the team of Jon Hamm and Zach Galifianakis helped redefine what it means to SuperJam. Speaking of which, our Comedy Theatre, Broo’ers Festival and Bonnaroo Cinema have grown into festivals of their own, featuring outlandish entertainment, craft beer, interactive events and, even, air-conditioning. This year, we are proud to welcome back Pearl Jam for another marathon Bonnaroo performance as part of their 25th-anniversary celebration. We’re also stoked that the recently reunited LCD Soundsystem will grace the What Stage during their first visit to Manchester, Tenn., since their late-night rager in 2010. Of course, we couldn’t think of a better way to close out this year’s festivities than with a two-set performance by Dead & Company. The Dead were one of our original inspirations and remain a thread connecting us to our festival forefathers. Speaking of #RooMagic, we are excited to welcome back a few other familiar faces from our first year like Ween, who are in the midst of their first run since 2011, and Les Claypool, who serenaded us with the first “Bonn-a-roo” chant 14 years ago and will roll into our little utopia with The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Kamasi Washington, one of the freshest faces in modern jazz, will pay tribute to our Tennessee surroundings during an all-star SuperJam featuring Miguel, Blood Orange’s Devonté Hynes, the Internet, Lizzo, GRiZ, Eric Krasno & The Shady Horns, Vulfpeck, Chicano Batman and many others. If that’s not enough, then be sure to check out our many site improvements. We’ve installed 300 permanent toilets and over 150 permanent showers since last year, and we have also added 56 new water refill stations throughout The Farm. The future has truly arrived, and we can’t wait to ring in our next 15 years 5 with you. It’s good to see you on The Farm!

A WORD ABOUT
OUR PARTNERS
N
ot all festivals are created equal and Episode 15 is here to prove it once again. While we celebrate the extraordinary city of music and art that is Bonnaroo, it’s you, our community, that makes the experience unlike any other. The festival is a home away from home, creating memories that we carry with us long after we leave The Farm. Our success would not be possible without the partners who, like us, are dedicated to a better Bonnaroo for every attendee, artist and staff member. We would like to sincerely thank all of our partners for supporting our music, our community and our nonprofit endeavors. For you Bonnaroo veterans, you’ll notice some familiar brands that have become loyal friends of the festival. The New Music on Tap Lounge brewed by Miller Lite showcases an awesome lineup of up-and-coming bands. Visit ALEX AND ANI in Centeroo to get an exclusive Bonnaroo Bangle. Our friends at Teva are back at The Grind in POD 7 to help you go DIY with awesome footwear while you enjoy some java. Love to Laugh? TBS will host the Comedy Theatre and bring some hilarious talent to The Farm. KOHLER® is back in the campgrounds amping up the showers to keep you energized. Don’t forget to Fuel the Fun at Bonnaroo, thanks to GNC. Our friends at Red Bull Music Academy will bring some musical prodigies to the Kalliope Stage on Friday night and to the Silent Disco on Saturday night. After the event, take comfort in knowing you can still catch epic performances from this year’s festival on Red Bull TV. And if you are a Bonnaroo newbie, our friends at State Farm are #HeretoHelp all weekend long. The adventures are endless at Bonnaroo, so wander off the beaten path and discover the magic! And again, we would like to extend a thank you to all of our partners, whose support not only makes Bonnaroo possible for us, but also makes it more enjoyable for you. INFORMATION
ENTRY POLICY The Neighborhood
Although Bonnaroo is its own little magical kingdom, we’re surrounded by the realworld town of Manchester, Tenn. With your cooperation, we can make sure we’ll be welcomed back in the future. When you’re walking outside the festival grounds, remember that you are Out There and please follow all pedestrian rules and be respectful of our neighbors and their property. Show them some Bonnaroo love.
Wristbands
We use an ultra-high security wristband system called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) that equips each wristband with its own uniquely coded chip. Wristbands must be worn at all times. Your wristband will be scanned when you enter the tollbooths and each time you enter/exit the Tower or The Arch entrances into Centeroo. Do not tamper with your wristband in any way. Do not cut it, burn it, stretch it, fold it, spindle it or mutilate it.
12
Altered wristbands will be invalid and any person in possession of an altered wristband will be charged a replacement fee or may be ejected from the festival site. If you have any questions or problems with your wristband (even if it itches), visit one of the two Wristband Customer Service stations located at the Tower entrance and the The Arch entrance to Centeroo. NOTE: You MUST register your wristband in order to enter the festival. This can be done online or through the mobile app.
RE-ENTRY POLICY In + Out of Campgrounds in a Vehicle
We hope you won’t need to leave our little utopia during the festival. But if you do, please wait until Friday evening to give everyone a chance to arrive, unless there is a serious emergency. It is best to arrive on The Farm with enough supplies to last for the whole weekend. If you forget something, then we’ve got you covered. There are two General Stores onsite offering a variety of items for all your weekend needs. Anytime you leave the campgrounds, you’ll have to go through another vehicle search when you return (just like you were entering for the first time).
In + Out of Campgrounds on Foot
You may leave and re-enter the event grounds on foot at any time and as often as you like, but only through the East and West Tollbooths. You must be scanned out by our staff and scanned back in when you return. Very important: If you do not have your wristband scanned out, then you will not be allowed to re-enter the site. Obvious, but we have to say it: Do not attempt to leave through the Highway Tollbooth, even if you originally came in there. It’s a highway. It’s dangerous. What would your mother say?
Camping and Parking Vehicle Passes
Fans with a Parking Vehicle sticker may enter and leave only through the West Tollbooth. To get there, use Exit 111 from I-24 and follow the signs to the festival. If Exit 111 is closed, then follow police instructions and then follow the signs to Day Parking. Please note that because of all the inbound traffic on Thursday and Friday, it may take a little longer for vehicles with a Parking Vehicle sticker to exit on those days.
Emergency Vehicle Access
Our roads may not look like city streets, but for emergency and maintenance vehicles, they are efficient—as long as they stay clear. Please do not walk in the middle of the road. Walk in the wide shoulders to let official vehicles through.
CAMPING AND CAMPGROUNDS Camping
The campgrounds are conveniently divided into sections by streets (East-West) and avenues (North-South). Each General Admission Campground section is strategically named on the official Bonnaroo Site Map so you can find your way home, and tell people where to find you. The campgrounds will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 13, 2016. As a safety measure, there won’t be any open fires allowed inside the festival grounds (this specifically includes the campgrounds).
13
Please exercise extraordinary caution with matches, disposal of cigarette butts and any other open flames.
Family Camping
If you are bringing small children, then consider using our Family Camping Area. Bonnaroo is a place for people of all ages, but we feel that a special area for parents and their small children will help provide a better festival experience for all. Expecting parents are also welcome in this area. You don’t need a special ticket to camp here. Just ask for this camping section at the Tollbooth. Your vehicle will be flagged and the parking staff will direct you to the right place. NOTE: You must have a Car Camping Pass to participate in Family Camping.
14
Patrons with Disabilities: Accessible Camping & Parking
The Accessible Camping and Accessible Day Parking areas are reserved for fans with mobility disabilities. A governmentissued accessible parking license plate, placard or hangtag is required to use these areas. You do not need reservations. The Accessible Camping and Accessible Day Parking areas are close to the main Centeroo entrance.
PODs
PODs, or community information and service centers, are located throughout the campground. Locate them on your festival map or by the numbered and colored balloons tethered overhead. Each POD is staffed 24/7 by a Bonnaroo Ambassador,
and equipped with an info booth, community message bulletin board, medical tent, security station, toilets, showers and hand-washing stations.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms (accompanied by stand-alone hand-washing stations) are strategically located at each POD and throughout the campgrounds to meet all your urgent needs. They are cleaned frequently, but they are also used frequently, so please do your part to make the porta-potty experience as clean and enjoyable (maybe that’s not the right word) as possible. Use them only to deposit what nature intended and help keep them clean. Remember the golden rule of public toilets: Leave them as you’d like to find them. Bathrooms in the GA Campgrounds are the traditional portable affairs, equipped with hand sanitizer units and seat covers. Those in the VIP Campground are more— ahem—commodious. There are also hand sanitizers and stand-alone hand-washing units in each bathroom—please use them! In time for our 15th year celebration, we are also excited to announce that we have made
some serious Bonnaroovian-approved site improvements. Almost half of the GA showers in the campgrounds are now permanent, and a quarter of the GA bathrooms in Centeroo are now flushable and permanent— try them out this year, we’re sure you’ll find them extremely pleasant.
Hand Washing + Water Stations
Hand-washing stations are located at each POD as well as in Centeroo, so you can brush those teeth, wet that face and cleanse that soul. The water at these stations is 100 percent filtered and drinkable, so feel free to fill up your water bottles. Remember, this is not your bathtub—there are showers for bathing.
Showers Hosted by KOHLER ®
Showers can be found at all POD locations, indicated on your festival map. Showers are operated and cleaned by our very own shower fairies during hours of operation: Wednesday from 9 p.m.–12 a.m. at PODs 2, 3 +10, and at all PODS from 6 a.m.–2 a.m. on Thursday–Sunday, and 6 a.m.–11 a.m. on Monday. Showers cost $10 during peak hours (daily between 6 a.m.–2 p.m. and 6 p.m.–10 p.m.) and thanks to our friends at KOHLER® we offer $5 “happy hours” during off-peak hours (daily from 2 p.m.–6 p.m. and 10 p.m.–2 a.m.).
15
Bonnaroo Golf Cart Service
For a fee, we offer a golf cart taxi service to help you get around the campgrounds. Designated routes are indicated on your festival map, and the taxis are clearly marked, so be on the lookout—flag one down to catch a ride!
SAFETY INFORMATION Safety Staff
You can find our safety staff roaming through the campground, at every POD, at the entrance to Centeroo and the Main Venue and at all the stages, as well as throughout all of Centeroo and the Main Venue. Our safety (aka, security) staff is trained to help make sure everyone has a good time and stays safe. If you have a security issue in the campgrounds, then you can visit each POD’s security station, open 24 hours. Mounted security patrols
16
(yes, on horseback!) roam the campground areas at all times and can assist as well. Lasso one if you need help. All vehicles will be searched on entry to the festival at the Tollbooths (which you should definitely keep in mind when deciding what to bring). And prepare to be (politely) searched each time you enter Centeroo or the Main Venue. Remember, our security staff is truly here to help...whatever the issue may be.
Medical Tents
A lot of things can happen on The Farm: bee stings, arm-wrestling injuries, faces rocked off while dancing. That’s why the Main Venue, Centeroo and every POD is home to a Bonnaroo medical tent, staffed around the clock with licensed medical staff. The medical tents are a “Safe Haven.” In Centeroo, a medical tent is located between the Comedy Tent and This Tent. In the Main Venue, medical services are located near the Arch entrance, as well as
behind the Guest Bleachers at the What Stage. Our medical staff is always on duty. In an emergency, if you’re not near a medical tent, then find a staff person with a radio or notify the nearest security personnel so that they can get you whatever help you may need.
Food Safety
Please don’t buy from unlicensed vendors. We work hard to ensure that all official food and drink is good and safe. And really, if you buy something from an unlicensed vendor, then you have no idea what you’re getting. There is a lot of great stuff to buy from official Bonnaroo vendors, who deserve your business, especially since they have made a real commitment to support Bonnaroo.
CENTEROO & MAIN VENUE Hours of Operation
Centeroo is the heart of the festival. It opens at noon on Thursday, June 9, and will stay open nonstop, just like Las Vegas, until 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. Adjacent to Centeroo is the Main Venue, where the What Stage is located. The Main Venue opens at 1 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and closes after the What Stage headliner takes their last bow on Sunday. When you enter these areas, you’ll be searched and you must show your all-powerful wristband. You do not need to purchase a ticket for the various activities throughout Centeroo, with the exception of the Ferris Wheel and the Big Ass Water Slide.
17
What Is Not Allowed Inside Centeroo + Main Venue
No cans or glass bottles of any kind. No alcohol, video recording devices, professional photography equipment or cameras with detachable lenses longer than 2 inches (point-and-shoot cameras without additional lenses are OK), laser pens or focused-light devices, lawn chairs, folding chairs that sit higher than a foot off the ground, or anything that might impair the sight of other spectators (like ags, umbrellas or shade structures) and anything that’s prohibited anywhere else on the festival grounds. We reserve the right to add items to this list if necessary. All patrons are subject to a search by Bonnaroo security personnel upon entry into Centeroo and the Main Venue. Please be advised that Bonnaroo and its promoters, performers and staff will not be responsible for any items that are conďŹ scated during search procedures.
18
Barricade Arrangements at the What and Which Stage
Following the model of most European festivals, we have implemented a double barricade system in the very front of the What Stage and the Which Stage. This system allows more fans access to the up-front experience over the course of the weekend. As shown in the diagram, the entrances to the pit areas are located at the front of the stage on each side. A queue will be created on both sides along the venue walls. Each pit will be cleared after each performance, allowing a new group of fans to enter the area. You are not allowed to remain in the area to wait for the next concert. If you want to be in a pit for any of the performances at the What or Which Stage, please be sure to get in line well before the performance is scheduled to begin. And keep in mind, you must follow the instructions of all security personnel, who work actively to ensure that you and everyone around you enjoy a great concert experience.
General Stores
There are two General Stores located on the festival grounds—both in the campgrounds. General Stores are open from 9 a.m–3 a.m. during the festival (closing earlier on Sunday night) and offer personal hygiene items, batteries, disposable cameras, ice, beer, water, soda, food— you get the picture.
Locker Rentals
For a fee, lockers are available to stash your stuff in during the festival. You can find lockers inside the Main Venue, right past The Arch, and they are accessible all weekend long.
Info Booths
There are two main Info Booths on the festival grounds—one inside the Main Venue (by The Arch) and the other in Centeroo. Both are noted on your festival map. You’ll also find Satellite Info Booths located at each POD. Info Booths stay open 24 hours, and close at 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 12.
Lost + Found
Lost + Found is located at POD 4. If you lose something, or someone, check there first. If it is (or they are) not there the first time, then check again later. And if you find something that needs to be returned to its owner, then please drop it off at POD 4 next to the Tower.
Telephones + Service
There is a cell phone tower on the property, but with so many Bonnaroovians texting and sending photos to jealous friends back home, service can be inconsistent. If you have an emergency and need access to a phone, then visit any Info Booth for assistance.
ATMs
If you need cash, then you can find ATMs in Centeroo, the Main Venue, at the General Stores and at PODs. All locations are clearly marked on your festival map.
Clean Vibes Help Keep the Scene Clean
With great fun comes great responsibility. Please help Clean Vibes, our heroic trash and recycling crew, by keeping your site and the concert areas clean. Recycle, compost and pick up after yourself. WHAT GOES WHERE:
RECYCLING – Place in recycling collection bins throughout site and blue bags at your campsite. All plastic containers, aluminum and tin cans, glass, clean mixed paper, drink cartons, plastic packaging and grocery bags can be recycled this year.
19
COMPOST – Place all food waste and other compostables in the compost collection bins throughout site or in the clear bags at your campsite. (Do not contaminate them with trash.) All plates, cups, forks and other food service items sold by festival vendors are compostable. CIGARETTE BUTTS – Place in butt bins located throughout Centeroo for recycling or collect and turn them in at the Clean Vibes Trading Post for prizes. LANDFILL – If it can’t be recycled or composted, then place it in the landfill collection bins throughout the site or in a clear bag at your campsite.
20
Styrofoam, chip bags, ice cream and candy wrappers should go in this bin. When the music stops, please clean up your campsite (get extra bags at your POD). Pick up bottle caps and any other debris. Tie up your bags and leave them at the edge of the road. We’ll take it from there. Collect cans, cups, and bottles or cigarette butts by using a bag from the Clean Vibes Trading Post in Planet Roo and trade them in for points to redeem for a variety of great prizes.
Soberoo
Soberoo is a group of passionate, likeminded music fans who choose to remain drug and alcohol free at the festival. The group holds meetings daily at noon, 4 p.m., 8 p.m. and midnight. (There is no midnight meeting on Sunday). Look for the yellow balloons and get full details at the Soberoo Tent located across from That Tent in Centeroo. This year, we will begin hosting a “morning stretch/spiritual strength” session at 10 a.m. and a guided meditation at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please note: Soberoo has absolutely no opinion on the issue of drugs and alcohol, and neither condemns nor condones it. Our simple purpose is to provide support and information to those who seek the comfort and camaraderie of other clean and sober people at the festival. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stay substance-free at Bonnaroo. Though Soberoo consists primarily of those recovering from addiction, we are open to anyone who wishes to remain clean and sober this weekend.

BONNAROOVIANS FOR LIFE
A Family with a Perfect Attendance Award revisits 15 Years on The Farm
By Samuel Fanburg
I
t all started with a phone call. On the eve of the inaugural Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, an old fraternity brother from Potsdam University called Jason Maneval— “JAM,” as he known on The Farm—and told him about new music festival that he just had to go to. “I told him, ‘What are you talking about?’” Jason says with a laugh, as he prepares to make his 15th pilgrimage to the festival this spring. Sure enough, Jason rolled through the gates Saturday morning and so began a journey that has taken him to Bonnaroo every year since its inception in 2002. These days, Jason, an IT consultant for small/medium businesses and his wife, Amanda, an accountant, make the 65-mile trip from Nashville to Manchester, Tenn., and now The Farm is a second home. “The music might have changed, but the people have not,” says Jason. “It’s home when we are there.” Jason still carries special memories from that first Bonnaroo. The Del McCourey Band set stands out in his mind specifically. “I actually have a soundboard recording from that show and I can’t tell you how many times I‘ve played it,” says Jason. Jason and Amanda began seeing each other in the fall of 2002 and did not actually spend the first two Roos with each other. “In 2003, we went separately. We were supposed to meet up, but she stood me up,”
38
remembers Jason. From 2004 onward the couple has done every Bonnaroo together. They pitched a tent in VIP camping from 2004-2008 and have since rented an RV. Amanda was actually pregnant with their first child during the 2007 festival. “I did attend the festival every night that year,” Amanda says with a hint of pride. Their oldest child was born on June 30, three days after Bonnaroo. Because they were so close to the due date, Jason and Amanda stayed at home during the day, only to return to The Farm for the festival’s evenings sets. “She stuck it out until 3 a.m. that Sunday, though,” Jason says. Amanda and Jason had two more children in July 2010 and May 2014. The children have not attended Bonnaroo—yet. Jason is a self-proclaimed “Grateful Dead and Phish fan” who went to The Vermont Quartet’s Clifford Ball in 1996—a festival that inspired Bonnaroo’s architects—and proudly brought Amanda to see late-night Bonnaroo appearances by members of the Dead. Amanda considers herself more of a “country girl,” but the most memorable music experiences have come from unexpected places. Jay Z was a standout show for the two of them along with Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and The Flaming Lips. “Jay Z was amazing,” recalls Amanda. “We had a blast. There is just something about that experience and music.” One of Jason’s highpoints was Phish’s
two What Stage shows in 2009, including their festival-closing performance with Bruce Springsteen. “That was pretty special,” says Jason. “That was really cool.” This year, Amanda is excited for the return of popular country artists like Chris Stapleton and Sam Hunt, as well Pearl Jam, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and The Bluegrass Situation SuperJam. Bringing things full circle to the band that, in many ways, led him to Bonnaroo in the first place, Jason says the Grateful Dead offshoot Dead & Company’s two-set show is an ideal way to close out this spring’s 15-year celebration. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. I can’t wait for this upcoming year,” he says. In recent years, as their Bonnaroo community has grown, Amanda and Jason look forward to the festival’s camping element in particular. Amanda will typically bring in the RV on Thursday—with a friend they’ve met through attending Bonnaroo, of course—and Jason will join after nightfall on Friday. They also traditionally won’t roll through Centeroo until nighttime and have had some their best experiences with fellow campers. One year, when a physical therapist and three kids with friends came through on a bus, “it ended up being the coolest camping experience we’ve ever had,” said Jason. They both really try to create a home not just for themselves but for the great Bonnaroo community—an oasis for sunburned and worn festivalgoers. It’s all not unheard of to see Bonnaroovians using their campsite as a welcome respite. “There are so many years when people will just come and sit. They just need a place to chill and hang out,” said Jason. “It happens on one or two nights every year,
where people just need a place to focus.” “People are walking around at 7 a.m. and while I’m up making breakfast, they are sunburnt and haven’t slept in two days. I tell them to, ‘Come in, sit in the stage,” says Amanda. “Here’s water, food, shade and Gatorade. Chill inside. Cool off and make a plan.” Each Bonnaroo has led to its own adventures. There was that one year where they took an impromptu helicopter trip 15 miles away, on Sunday afternoon. Another time, Jason and Amanda made a late Bonnaroo appearance and caravanned into Manchester early Sunday morning after a red-eye flight from an Albany wedding. “It was actually the person who called me to tell me about the original Bonnaroo,” says Jason. Another year, their “crew” (Jason, Amanda, Tony and Christina), ran into adult film star Ron Jeremy. “Don’t touch him!” Tony joked. “One time, our friend Tony was actually a performer on the Solar Stage,” says Amanda. “That was coolest thing. To have a friend on the stage—It was so cool to see a crowd of people getting so excited for him. Despite Bonnaroo’s growth over the years, the spirit that originated at the first Bonnaroo is alive and well, according the twosome. “We’ve made it to all 15,” says Amanda. “Even though the music has changed, we still go because of what we created those first five years.” Jason agrees: “There is no way I wouldn’t have gone. It’s unique to be able to share in people’s experiences and help others. That is something I’m very proud of. We have this ‘Bonnaroo Box,’ and, every year, we take our wristbands and throw them in. That’s everything from every year. It means a lot. There might be others like us out there, and I hope there are.” 39
ALL ALONG THE
CLOCK TOWER Centeroo’s Beacon of Light
F
By Ryan Reed
or designer Andi Watson, the Bonnaroo clock tower is more than a vibrant art installation. It’s a torch, a beacon—a monolith looming over the festival grounds. “It’s not just there radiating light,” he says of his mirror-covered creation. “It’s bringing all the information from the festival to itself. It’s almost like an all-seeing object. If you can give the feeling that it has a sentience in some way, we as humans feel a little more affectionate toward it.” Watson, Radiohead’s longtime stage designer, unveiled his high-brow design at last year’s Bonnaroo, after ruminating on— and extensively researching—the structural and thematic properties of lighthouses. He wanted the tower to “react to its environment,” with its mirrored design both reflecting and illuminating its surroundings. This year’s edition, part of a five-year plan of redesigns,
40
includes an expanded grassy area around the tower, intended to emphasize Bonnaroo’s communal nature. “I wanted to present the tower as a beacon, a central focal point,” he says, noting its crucial location at the border of Centeroo and the campgrounds. “You can see it 24 hours a day. If you get lost, you know where you are because you can always go to the tower. I wanted to develop that spirit of community and get the tower involved as an object people can reference. It’s a place everyone knows, a place everyone can see.” Jonathan Mayers, whose company Superfly co-founded Bonnaroo, first approached the designer nearly a decade ago hoping to brainstorm a concept for the tower, which had been donated to festival creative
director Russ Bennett. He recalled being mesmerized by Watson’s visual work for Radiohead’s headlining 2006 Bonnaroo performance, which included dizzying shots of frontman Thom Yorke projected on massive screens. “I’d seen [his work] at other Radiohead shows and was always really impressed,” Mayers says. “I remember one tour where they had all these little video cameras very close up. I loved how Andi used certain lighting fixtures like versatubes, which were hanging perpendicular to the stage. It was always so innovative, so classy, always pushing the boundaries. It never feels like a traditional rock show.” But their discussions on the project were put on hold as the Superfly crew explored other unique platforms, including a trickedout cuckoo clock with trippy video content curated by collaborator Daniel Brodie. In early 2015, three years after another dazzling Radiohead Roo show, a reinvigorated Mayers reached out again to Watson, challenging him to “rethink what the tower could be.” That quest “probably took a lot longer than you’d think,” Watson adds, laughing at his grandiose visions. “The concept of the tower is fairly complex, but it’s also a simple overarching idea. So taking the lead from that, what is possible given the structure itself? A lot of people go to the festival every single year, so not only are you coming up with something new and interesting, it’s also a matter of making sure it can grow and develop over subsequent years. [That way], people can come back and see a familiar friend and object, but it’s also changed and grown with them and the festival.”
As a stage and lighting designer, Watson has built an impressive résumé by creating heady visual drama for Radiohead, Oasis and even Prince (joining the Vari-Lite crew for The Purple One’s Sign o’ the Times tour). But he denies having a distinct “style,” stressing that any motifs are a coincidental byproduct of servicing the music. The Bonnaroo project presented a new challenge: capturing the mood of not one band, but dozens—not a handful of band members, but thousands of festivalgoers. “When you listen to a song and you’re trying to decide what the treatment should be, you’re creating an environment for the band to perform the song in,” he says. “Whether that’s induced by narrative or tempo or the emotion of the song, you’re creating a world in which that song exists. And Bonnaroo is a world. It has its own feel; its own story. So you basically take would do for a single song and turn that into the idea for an object. Then you utilize the existing infrastructure, which informs a lot of that narrative.” The development process took years of strategizing, philosophizing and smoothing out numerous kinks. But the tower, once a fun novelty destination, is now an object with both practical and symbolic substance. “We want it to be a destination and a gathering place,” Mayers says. “We think about it as this canvas—maybe the structure itself is set, but it can refresh each year. We want it to be one of the festival’s iconic pieces that people really identify with Bonnaroo.” 41
Ed Helms looks back at his three visits to The Farm and other Bluegrass Situations
THE TIME OF MY LIFE
I
grew up in Atlanta, which is a pretty cosmopolitan city, so I wasn’t really around bluegrass music all that much. But when I started taking guitar lessons, my teacher was really into that music so, by his own discretion, I started loving bluegrass music and getting more into it. He was a guitar and banjo teacher, so after a few years, we crossed over from guitar to banjo together. I played in a couple of dainty rock bands in high school, but there wasn’t really much of an outlet or scene—at least that I had any exposure to, other than my guitar teacher. I feel so lucky—his influence has profoundly affected my life, and I’m super grateful for that. I spent summers up in North Carolina at a camp, and I heard a bit more acoustic music organically up there. I’d try to grab cassette tapes at truck stops or wherever I could find stuff. It just stuck with me. Once I got to be a teenager, and had a little more independence and could chase down music on my own, I really went deep into it. It was my mission to absorb any great acoustic music I could find. I will never forget this one concert I went to—It wasn’t bluegrass, but it was this guitar player named Michael Hedges. He was this new age-y acoustic guitar wizard—all kinds of slapping and finger-tapping—totally outrageous styles. He was
42
one of the original flamboyant, out-there acoustic guitar guys. Just from a technical standpoint, he was totally mesmerizing. He played something super contemporary, and sort of weird and tweaked-out, but because he played an acoustic guitar, it resonated for me. He died in a car accident about 15 years
ago. I don’t know why, but I go to that as a formative experience because I went to that concert by myself when I was like 13. I took the bus. It was one of the first concerts where my mom was like, “Yeah, it’s not Metallica; you can go by yourself.” So, I just went and sat in the audience and was completely absorbed. The Bluegrass Situation started in 2010 as a mini festival at Largo in Los Angeles. It was a really fun event. We had a small venue, but we had an awesome lineup with Dave Rawlings, Punch Brothers, The Infamous Stringdusters and Steep Canyon Rangers with Steve Martin. Then we joined forces with Amy Reitnouer, who, at the time, was running a Los Angeles-based roots music blog, and that became The Bluegrass Situation as a Web presence. It began establishing itself as the Rolling Stone of roots music, really an online hub for bands and artists who play Americana and roots music. That was five years ago, and it’s continued to grow and be a lot of fun ever since. A lot of comedians play the banjo. A lot of comedians are obnoxious and banjos are inherently obnoxious, so maybe it’s a natural fit. Kidding aside, I do think that a comedian at his or her best really brings a lot of joy to the world and banjos are intrinsically joyful instruments as well—that’s a nicer way of saying the same thing. What we try to bring to the audience with The Bluegrass Situation stage at Bonnaroo is straightforward. It’s kind of intimate. The great thing about Bonnaroo is you can really get right up on top of the musicians. You’re close to the stage, so it provides an intimate and personal experience. I think the music itself
is so accessible—there’s always a place for roots music. It’s a very primal form, and seems to resonate no matter what your taste is or what you’re into. I think it speaks to something that is present in all of us. If you looked out from the stage, then you would think our tent was an EDM stage because people are hopping and dancing and cheering, but then you turn the sound up, and it’s a great ol’ bluegrass song—just cranking away. That’s the hope: to bring more energy and fun and access to this great music. Part of the beauty of Bonnaroo is how eclectic and all over the map it is. You’ve got banjos playing one minute and EDM playing the next minute, and R&B next to country and who knows what. It’s really fun to create this space for roots music fans for an afternoon. One of the greatest years was when The Avett Brothers jumped on. It was so fun—they showed up in the middle of the SuperJam. I had heard that they wanted to come by, but it wasn’t clear if they could, and then they just showed up behind the stage. They were like, “We’re here—can we do it?” They threw out a song, “Be Kind to a Man While He’s Down,” and we just rehearsed it right there next to the trailers backstage, and a crowd circled up around the rehearsal. That was a super fun, intimate moment— very spontaneous and organic—then we took it right up onstage and just rocked it out. The other one would be when Lake Street Dive was on the year before last and we did that Dirty Dancing song, “(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life.” It was the finale, and everybody was onstage. It was so fun. 43
CLAYPOOL
STILL AFTER ALL THESE YEARS The first Bonnaroo was a good ‘ol freak show. I remember it being very hot and I had on some sort of old, Scottish military jacket. So I am sweating my balls off now and went out and did the old “Bonn—a—roo” chant and that was a sound bite that went around for a while.
L
es Claypool certainly knows his way around The Farm. In fact, he’s been here more times—and played more stages—than almost any act on this year’s bill. His history of stirring up crazy ideas with festival co-creator Superfly actually predates Bonnaroo by a few years when the Primus frontman organized Oysterhead—his all-star group with The Police’s Stewart Copeland and Phish’s Trey Anastasio—for a SuperJam during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. During the inaugural Roo in 2002, he pulled double duty, helping christen the main stage with his Frog Brigade and joining guitarist Buckethead, keyboardist Bernie Worrell and drummer Bryan “Brain” Mantia as Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains. He’s played all sorts of spaces during the festival’s evolution—from its first outdoor late-night set on the Which Stage in 2004 to a SuperJam based on the music of Tom Waits, featuring Gogol Bordello and Kirk Hammett from Metallica in 2008. (His distinctive mug has even popped up in the Cinema Tent, which presented films like Primus’ Blame It on the Fish and the mockumentary, Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.) This year, Claypool returns to Bonnaroo after five years as part of a psychedelic project with Sean Lennon, The Claypool Lennon Delirium.
44
When I floated the idea for Oysterhead to Stewart, his first thought was, “What are you talking about? We’re just gonna go jam?” He was even more confused than me, but then we discovered that there is this whole audience that wants us to live on the edge. The whole festival world of seeing all these different bands has evolved so much since the ancient times when I first played here. Now, people look at all these different styles of music on the same stage and say, “Oh, that’s cool.” When I played Bonnaroo with the Frog Brigade, that was one of the first shows I did with Tim Alexander in years—he came on tour, did Bonnaroo and that brought him back to Primus. It was a rekindling of our musical relationship.

FROM MR. T TO Bringing Mardi Gras to Bonnaroo
“
46
W
e got our start in New Orleans so, when we started Bonnaroo, we wanted to bring a little New Orleans with us,” says Kerry Black, who along with the rest of the Superfly co-founders cut his teeth organizing concerts and late-night events around The Big Easy in the ‘90s. That little bit of the Crescent City that Black mentions has been embodied in several aspects of the festival—even down to its name—throughout the years, but none more so than the various Mardi Gras-themed parades that Bonnaroo hosts each season. “The whole social club/parade thing that happens around Mardi Gras—at Jazz Fest and all that—was right there from the initial [idea of Bonnaroo]—in its DNA,” says Russ Bennett, who has served as the artistic director for the festival since the inaugural celebration in 2002. A live music veteran who has acted as artistic director for all of Phish’s festivals— from Clifford Ball in 1996 to last year’s Magnaball—Bennett says he saw something in the Superfly partners that made him believe in the longevity of Bonnaroo, even in its first year. “You can never really predict that,” Bennett admits. “But I thought, with these young guys, who are passionate about music and doing everything for all the right reasons that, if it took off, it would take off.
By Matt Inman
The passion for music itself came from a really genuine place, with some business acumen and discipline.” New Orleans is rich in tradition and culture so Black and company made a point of creating new traditions on The Farm in Tennessee—ones that have endured throughout the years. And one of the longeststanding traditions of Bonnaroo, now celebrating its 15th year, are parades that break down the barriers between performers and fans. For Bennett the project started as his “little band of gypsies,” and has grown into more and more inclusive and expansive affairs. “In the beginning, they were just surprises,” Black says. “No one really knew; it would just happen, and it was mostly staff that was in the parade. But now, we have started announcing them so that people can come be a part of it and get in the second lines.” Over the years, the various parades have featured large Mardi Gras floats, like a gigantic Mr. T, along with traditional walking parades, brass-band second lines and special guests—both musicians and celebrities. Black and Bennett both point to 2004 in particular as a highlight, when American Idol phenomenon William Hung took over one of the floats to belt out his then-popular rendition of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.” Bo Bice, another American Idol favorite, showed up the next year and, while onsite, sat in with Bonnaroo performers like Galactic and Trey Anastasio.
THE METERS Black remembers another year when New Orleans legend Dr. John played his 1974 album Desitively Bonnaroo—from which the festival takes its name—in its entirety with the help of fellow NOLA greats The Meters and Allen Toussaint. (The Meters were part of the backing band for the album and the recently deceased Toussaint produced the record and provided some horn arrangements for the performance.) After the show, members of My Morning Jacket and the Preservation
Hall Jazz Band led a parade from behind the stage, through Centeroo and to a float where Portugal. The Man delivered a surprise set of their own. But, as with any large-scale operation, there are always going to be some snags and hiccups, though Bennett can now joke about things like the time a float was almost set aflame. There’s also the frequent logistic issues of actually getting the parades through the throngs of festivalgoers, even with security assistance. But at a place like Bonnaroo, sometimes you have to just roll with it. “You just say, ‘OK, this is what it is,’” says Bennett. “You’re not suddenly gonna say, ‘OK, everybody get the hell outta the way. Police coming through.’ That would be counterintuitive to everything that we’re doing. But, you know, we learn. We’re always looking to provide more surprise and delight.”

Parades
What’s better than a parade? Just about nothing. Marching to the beat of our own drums, getting dressed up in something fancy or just high-steppin’ and spinning an umbrella as you second line through Centeroo is a good ol’ time and something we’ve always done at Bonnaroo. Every parade is a bit different, of course, but they usually include a great brass band and sometimes lead you to a pot of gold. We cordially invite you join us in any of the many parades happening during the weekend.

Splash-A-Roo
Splash-A-Roo is your saving grace during peak daytime hours when the hot sun is beaming down. Pay a small fee for your screams on the 40-foot Big Ass Water Slide. For more fun in the sun, get your bump-set-spike on at the sanded pick-up volleyball court. Resist the urge to stay dry and bring a waterproof camera. 57

The Academy in Planet Roo offers a full day of interactive healthy living, writing and garden workshops! This year, The Academy is located in the amazing sustainable building made out of haybales, where the post office used to be. Check The Academy schedule outside the haybale structure for times or stop by the tent to see what is offered each day. Learn to grow your own food, right in the middle of the festival! The learning garden is a quintessential Planet Roo experience where you can get hands-on training from knowledgeable farmers and volunteers. Work directly in the garden, practicing your seed-sowing, watering and plant
maintenance skills, or learn how to identify wild edibles for your next foraging adventure. Whether you are looking to grow your own culinary herb garden or dive into mycology by growing shiitake mushrooms, the learning garden is a dynamic space to explore your curiosity about food.
Carbon Shredders
Join the Bonnaroo Carbon Shredders and We Are Neutral to make a difference. Together, we can exercise real power by reducing our carbon-power footprints. The Shredders are a hope-generating, “if it aint fun don’t do it,” shreddolutionary education group dedicated to helping concert goers save money on energy costs, reduce pollution and create a clean-energy future for the communities we live in. If 80,000 people each reduce their carbon footprint by 5%, then that would reduce our collective carbon output by hundreds of millions of pounds. Be the “Biggest Loser.” The Planet and all of us win.
Roo Solar Stage
Our Tower of Power solar-powered Solar Stage is back and better than ever! It’s The Farm’s only completely solar-powered stage, and we are pretttttttty sure that energy from the sun makes everything on the stage better. We are excited to welcome back Solar Stage mainstays Rock the Earth, Heritage Radio Network and the B’rooers University. Heritage Radio will be talking food and sustainability through panels such as Kitchen Confidential: “Never Have I Ever” and Game Changer: One Food Hack to
Save the World. B’roo U will have a host of top-secret beer SuperJams and discussions that will bestow knowledge on the nexus of beer, music and sustainability. New this year, we welcome our friends at Intel, who will host two conversations—“Change the World One Purchase at a Time” and “How to Turn your Passion into Advocacy.” We are also stoked to be joined by DoSomething.Org to discuss a virtual campaign we are undertaking with them around climate change, and a zombie game, as well as a new workshop called “The Art of Hugging.” This workshop takes the Bonnaroo high five to a whole new level and you will learn the benefits of hugging and how to give the best hug in the world.
Planet Roo Café— 100% Waste-Free
The Planet Roo Café is Bonnaroo’s only sit-down restaurant. We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Relax and enjoy a meal prepared by Crescent Foods or grab an iced herbal tea or lemonade to go. Refill Revolution: Beer Cups + Water Bottles
Help ignite the Refill Revolution! In 2015, the Refill Revolution eliminated over 750,000 plastic water bottles and reduced our compostable beer cup consumption by 32,000 cups. With your help, we feel certain we could double those numbers this year!
59
We will be partnering once again with Steelys Drinkware and the Plastic Pollution Coalition to bring you a quality stainless steel beer cup! Purchase a beer cup onsite at any beverage stand with draft beer. Cups are $15 each and include the durable cup with a to-go carrying strap, filled with a cold beer—plus an additional $1 discount off all subsequent refills made with the cup at beer stands throughout the remainder of the festival. You can help reduce our consumption of plastics by refilling your water bottles. In addition to our usual free high quality well water (similar to tap), we have free filtered drinking water stations to fill up your water bottle throughout the festival site. Your bottle can be filled and refilled an infinite number of times at any of the water refill mushrooms onsite; in fact, all of the water at Bonnaroo is drinkable. It comes directly from our wells so we don’t truck in water, which makes the program even more sustainable!
WORK IT OUT Your body is a wonderland. Your body is your best friend. Stay energized throughout the long weekend by breaking a sweat and staying limber. This year’s physical program is more inspired, wild and weird than ever before. Get fit on The Farm with us in 2016.

The Tower
Last year, we partnered with Andi Watson, longtime lighting designer for Bonnaroo veterans Radiohead, to create a new iconic art piece for Bonnaroo. What resulted was a rotating mirrored ball that reacts to its environment, both reflecting and illuminating its surroundings. This year, expect some exciting additions around the base of the tower that will be sure to light up your weekend.
The Fountain
The Bonnaroo Fountain is one of the festival’s most iconic structures. Each year since it was built in 2003, we have selected an artist or group of artists to redesign and repaint the structure, creating a brand new vision and experience for Bonnaroovians. Located in the heart of Centeroo, The Fountain serves as both a way to cool off from the hot
61
Tennessee sun and as a great meeting point. And once the sun sets, black lights transform it into a whole new wonder! This year, the Fountain was designed by graphic designer Made-Up, who created our 2016 Bonnaroo identity, and painted by the talented Jill Folino and her crew.
The Arch
Come on in! The Arch has long been the entry point for most campers into Centeroo, and is a sight to behold each festival season. This year, The Arch is a reflective glittery beacon of mirrored discs, ensuring that your entrances will be grand all weekend long!

By day, 20 hand-selected musicians from around the country that have been invited here collaborate and create new music throughout the weekend in these fully stocked, custom-built studios. They will learn from, and work with, internationally recognized artists who will give talks about their approach, inspirations and experiences. By night, you can hear them yourself as they take over the Silent Disco (Saturday) and Kalliope Stage (Friday), where they will be performing alongside some very special guests. The Red Bull Music Academy is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals, held in a different city globally each year.
