Dear KCSA Parents and Kansas City Parents, I am sitting at home with tears running down my face. My brother, a pediatrician from Rochester, New York just wrote to tell me that one of his patients, a two year old, drowned in an above ground pool at day care. Ten years ago, I went to my brother when I wanted to get involved with Infant Aquatics. I wanted to know from a medical standpoint what the reaction would be to teaching infants and toddlers to swim. My brother was very hesitant and told me to emphasize the safety aspects of the program. This year when we started our program, I kept him up to date on what KCSA and IA are trying to accomplish. A recent youtube video featured an 18 month old swimming across a small pool. There have been 1.1 million viewers. Most of the people were commenting on the parents forcing their child to work out! The safety aspects were not discussed. Infant Aquatics is NOT about having little children work out. The #1 reason to teach a child to swim is to prevent an aquatic accident such as drowning or severe aquatic injury. These accidents are totally preventable. This summer in KC we have had six drownings: four adults, one 16 year old and one two year old. This is a terrible tragedy that never should happen. At the KCSA we emphasize to your children the importance of water safety: not diving into unmarked lakes, ponds, pools. When in doubt, don’t do it! The importance of wearing a certified Coast Guard life jacket when riding in a boat or enjoying water sports like water skiing, boating, fishing. Making the wise decision when they are out with their family or friends. Never swim alone. I am writing this email to remind everyone to use good decisions when around water. Have a healthy respect for the water. Encourage everyone to learn to swim I want to thank Flip Short and Dan Lowe for helping KCSA to bring Infant Aquatics and rescue floating to the KC area. Our Lee’s Summit facility is perfect for teaching any level of person to learn to swim. I hope that in the future I can send to you only our success stories and no more heartbreaking news of drownings! The KCSA and staff have our work cut out for us but I am so proud that with the help of Flip and Dan that we can make a lasting difference and save lives in KC! The next few weeks our swimmers will be competing in their Championship meets. We wish them the best of luck and are very proud of them! Hold them tight and love them! Be safe! Caulk Gun

I follow Jessica’s Blog for fun inspirational projects. I discovered this handy tutorial and thought about sealing the kitchen sink. Below is a reprint from...

How to use a caulk gun ! To SOME people this may seem a bit silly... but I remember the first time I ever used a Caulk Gun... And the second time! The first time I used caulk... Similar to the bottle shown above. The second time I used liquid nails... Took me a minute to figure that one out... Felt sorta dumb when I figured out what I was doing wrong. So... I’m going to share with you... My lovely readers... who may or may not know how to use a Caulk Gun...Exactly HOW to use one... When you buy your tube of caulk or liquid nails. you’ll notice that the tip needs a good clipping! {It is REALLY important for you to use the right caulk and/or liquid nails for the project you are about to do. Really pay attention to the tubes... Research... Ask the Home Depot dude if you need to!} That’s where this awesome “Spout Cutter” comes into play. Just put your tip in that nifty spout cutter and squeeze the trigger {handle}... It’ll cut the tip right off! It’s important to note that if you want a small ‘bead’ you need to cut a smaller hole. For caulk, I cut a very small tip at an angle. The tube shown in these pics is of DAP Alex Fast Dry Acrylic Latex Caulk with Silicone to be exact! For liquid nails, I cut a little larger hole at a straight line. 16

Once you’ve cut the tip off you may need to puncture yet another seal... It’s down at the base of the tip, where it meets the tube. For the caulk used here there was not an additional seal. For liquid nails, there most likely will always be an additional seal. You could use the tip of a wire hanger but no need this handy dandy Caulk Gun has it all... Just flip that baby out and stab away. Now! Put your tube into the caulking gun. Make sure the ‘pressure plate’ is all the way back because that darned tube isn’t going to fit if your gun looks like this... To get that ‘pressure plate’ back simply squeeze the metal piece you see my thumb on and pull the ‘hook’ at the end of the metal rod all the way back. Pop your tube in, squeeze the trigger a few times till that ‘pressure plate’ is touching the tube.. NOW... Ready Aim Shoot ! Some energy ideas of what to caulk: Eventually, all homes need fresh caulking to fill gaps and cracks that may appear in walls and where different types of materials are joined. Checking and repairing caulk should be one of those maintenance projects that get done around the house every year or two. It not only saves on heating and air conditioning bills, it prevents moisture and even insects from entering your walls. Caulk is a pliable sealant that comes in large tubes that can be purchased at most hardware stores. Once the caulk is applied, it solidifies in the air to fill gaps, cracks and spaces at joints and connections all around your home. Some caulks don’t turn hard but remain pliable like a rubber. Look around the outside of your house for places that need to be filled in. If your heater is on, you may be able to feel drafts where heated air is escaping from cracks. In particular, look for gaps and holes around door and window frames, wall and roof vents, and skylights. Examine around outdoor faucets and where the gas pipes and electrical lines enter the house. Check the joints where siding joins at corners and where it meets the roof and the foundation, or where it meets the fireplace chimney.
