Let’s Discover Decor DESIGNER AND CRAFTSMAN ANDREW WEBBER TO DEBUT OUTLAND FURNISHINGS Webber hand-crafts each piece, which range from chairs and leg rests to end tables, wine racks and even light fixtures and chandeliers, with thoughtful details such as built-in wine glass rests in the arms of his chairs and different sized pieces for children and adults. Every item in Outland’s line is built-to-order and customizable, offering near-limitless options for the rustic-yet-elegant pieces that will stand the test of time thanks to their virtually indestructible source materials. “The first time that I broke a barrel apart and saw how solid a material it is, and how distinctive each barrel can be – no two are exactly alike – I immediately starting thinking about uses for them and ways to repurpose them,” says Webber, whose work in the hospitality industry brought him from Philadelphia to Kentucky, where a good friend gifted him a barrel that became his first project. “Each barrel has its own look and feel; the outsides are weathered, while the insides are charred before they’re used to age bourbon, so the wood takes on incredible character.” Webber started Outland Furnishings simply with candleholders and other household items before repurposing entire barrels for chairs, benches and end tables. He utilizes every component of each barrel to create his distinctive pieces and even crafts the barrels’ hoops into large globes ideal for use as sculpture or chandeliers, ensuring that no piece goes to waste. Webber, who learned carpentry from his grandfather while growing up in Lancaster, PA and created his first pieces, hand-sanded wood Christmas ornaments, at just six years old. “I’m proud to return these beautiful, useful objects to work after their primary purpose has been fulfilled,” says Webber. “Bourbon barrels can only be used once to make bourbon and if used on the secondary market to age other spirits, they can only be used once again, so transforming them into furniture is a logical and practical second life for this beautifully aged wood and the accompanying fixtures. As someone who enjoys a craft beer or a small-batch bourbon at the end of a long day, I try to create pieces that are ideal for gathering with friends and family, watching the sun go down and bringing a bit of the rustic ‘outland’ into the home.” Besides reclaiming the barrels themselves, which he drives to the “Old Bourbon” region of Kentucky to purchase and then brings back to his workshop in Kansas City, Webber also partnered with American Forests, a Washington, DC-based non-profit, who will plant a tree for every piece of furniture he sells. The 140-year-old group is the nation’s oldest conservation agency, and will plant their 50 millionth tree this year. “I like the idea of repurposing the barrels, but it still didn’t feel like enough,” he explains. “To that end, I’m excited to work with American Forests to ensure that the raw materials that are used to make these barrels – and ultimately, this furniture – are around for generations to come.”

Rose Planting Tips

Plant roses where they will receive a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of full sun per day. Roses grown in weak sun may not die at once, but they weaken gradually. Give them plenty of organic matter when planting and don’t crowd them. Wear sturdy gloves to protect your hands from prickly thorns. Have a hose or bucket of water and all your planting tools nearby. Keep your bare-root rose in water until you are ready to place it in the ground. Roses can be cut back and moved in either spring or fall, but not in midsummer, as they might suffer and die in the heat. Large rose canes can be cut back by as much as two thirds, and smaller ones to within 6 to 12 inches of the ground. When you transplant your roses, be sure to dig a much bigger hole than you think you need (for most types, the planting hole should be about 15 to 18 inches wide) and add plenty of organic matter such as compost or aged manure. Some old-timers recommend placing a 4-inch square of gypsum wallboard and a 16-penny nail in the hole to provide calcium and iron, both appreciated by roses. 15
