When I Am Big

“I can do almost everything, but I’m not allowed. I know what I want, but I can’t reach it!”

To be small can be terribly inconvenient. Unpractical and unfair. The things you want from the top shelf are hopelessly far away, and even though you are so wise, and have thought something out so well, suddenly grownups can come and just take over. But imagine if you grew taller than the treetops! If nobody could say “no” and “not now” anymore. How would things be then?

In Maria Nilsson Thore’s illustrated gem When I am Big, a child grows and gets to try out how grownup life can be. It is powerful, exciting, and fun, it turns out, although there are some good things about being small too…

When I am Big is a story about growing, about making decisions and try things for yourself – and about sometimes shrinking and becoming small again. It is all told through Maria Nilsson Thores unmistakably playful and flowing watercolour illustrations and her spoton language. Delicate, cleverly quirky and with Maria Nilsson Thore’s always present children’s perspective.

Addi’s Afro

Addi’s grandpa is a master at knitting hats! Every winter, he knits a whole bunch of new ones in every colour and shape you can imagine. But Addi already has at least a hundred and, besides, he HATES wearing them! “They itch and ruin my hair!” Addi screams, running hatless out the door with his snow racer.

On his way to go sledging, Addi meets lots of animals – a fox, an owl, a beaver, an ermine, and a moose. They all ask why he isn’t wearing a hat like the other kids. Over and over again, Addi has to explain that his ears don’t get cold as his hair keeps them warm. But that’s when the animals jump straight into his hair! It’s crowded and chaotic as they all try to fit, and soon Addi is fed up. He shakes off the freeloaders, sending them tumbling into the snow. When the whole heap of them howl that they are cold, Addi has a brilliant idea. Maybe Grandpa’s knitted hats could save the day after all?

Jali Madi Susso has written several acclaimed picture books in collaboration with Eva Susso and is the author of a series of chapter books. He writes with musicality and a warm sense of humour, often about the multicultural experience.

Felicia Fortes is an illustrator, artist, and graphic designer. She illustrates for magazines and daily newspapers, and designs books and informational materials. Addi’s Afro marks her debut as a children’s book illustrator.

Wishing for Snow

LUGO & LILL:

Lugo and Lill are best friends. Lugo is big, and Lill is small – one of them loves adventure, and the other prefers cosy days at home.

On a rainy and gloomy winter’s day, Lill discovers a beautiful glass ball in the attic. Inside is a snowy winter landscape. “It must be a wishing ball,” says Lugo – and Lill gets to make a wish. Lugo is right. The next day, snow is falling around their house. Everything is magical! Lill wants to go sledging, build a snowman, and do all the wintry things, but the day doesn’t turn out as Lill has planned. A tumble with the sledge leads to cold, wet paws ... Luckily, these two friends know how to turn the day around.

An atmospheric and heartwarming picture book, and the second in the series about Lugo and Lill and their friendship. Poetically narrated by Anna Lundgren, and richly illustrated by Maya Jönsson in watercolours that bring snowy landscapes and detailed interiors to life.

Opposites

Same and Alike, but Contrary

What is the opposite? Same and alike, but contrary! Tall – short, fast – slow, dry – wet. In Mia Nilsson’s world, the pairs of opposites hold so much more than the reader might initially think. Birds on the run, Olle who picks blueberries and an ice cream queue that is seemingly endless. Short, witty texts that have drawn inspiration from haiku poetry, and illustrations that almost seem to explode from the pages depict small moments where the opposites take the story in unexpected directions.

Mia Nilsson is an illustrator, animator, and writer, born in Skåne but living in Stockholm. Mia studied at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London and has since graduating worked for a variety of clients, mainly in the UK and Sweden, but also in the US, India, and Norway.

The Fox and the Mole

A Ghost Story

How different can two friends be? Get whisked away by the magic of an unlikely friendship in this enchanting picture book with a gothic atmosphere.

“All the way out on a headland, tucked between the heath and the sea, stood a solitary little house...” began the fox.

“Ugh, how scary,” said the mole.

“But I’ve barely started reading,” said the fox. “And try not to chew so loudly, would you?”

Brace yourself for a tale of grudges, nearsightedness, and a disastrous encounter with some marmalade. Yet this delightfully spooky picture book is also a story of how our own quirks can cause trouble for both us and others – and how reading a book together makes everything better.

Join the fox and the mole for an adventure on a windswept heathland in Cecilia Heikkilä’s whimsical story and beautiful illustrations. As an illustrator and picture book author who grew in the north of Sweden, Heikkilä is known for exploring big questions in an unpretentious and childfriendly way, always with a love for animals and nature.

The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit

Step into the dark world of Lillebror Rabbit and his family, written and illustrated by Jonna Björnstjerna.

These are scary tales for 3–6 year olds… but they are also wonderful! The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit are set in a fairy taleesque world where things are not just exciting and captivating, but also deals with things that may feel scary and how to deal with fear. Come along for adventures with threeheaded trolls, aliens, and grumpy, unlycky, old men.

Jonna Björnstjerna invites readers to these cosy thrillers for the youngest readers. Her illustrations invoke thoughts of both Edward Gorey and John Bauer and she herself cites Julie Doucet and Tim Burton as great inspirations. In her version of stories for children, with elements of both the scary and romanticism, the results are fantastic, fun, and personal stories where we all can recognise ourselves! She has even been called the Stephen King for the youngest readers (Petter Lindgren, Aftonbladet).

The somewhat surrealistic stories are about courage and daring to do things that might be a bit scary, but they always end happily. The stories also have heaps of humour, excitement, and detailed rich illustrations with lots to look at and discuss. Twice they have been awarded the title as best picture book by Bokjuryn (where the children themselves vote for their favourites).

Besides the main series, Björnstjerna has also written an introduction to the Enchanted forest with the The Flora & Fauna of Wonderwoods. There, Lillebror Rabbit guides the reader through pretty glades, all while encountering fascinating monsters, mean little elves and terrifying creatures and plants!

Day of the Dead

THE DARK TALES OF LILLEBROR

RABBIT:

It is finally time for All Hallows Eve, or The Day of the Dead, as it is called in the Fairy Tale Forest! It is the day when regular rabbits, gnomes and trolls can visit their graves in The Valley of the Dead without being chased by vampires or a hungry zombie. The mayor has ordered extra meat, blood, and delicious brains so the inhabitants of the valley will not be struck by hunger and go after some poor creature. But because of a gang of “cool” types, and, to some extent, the contents of Little Brother Rabbit’s candy bag, things don’t go quite according to plan!

This is the eleventh book about The Dark Tales of Lillebror Rabbit in Wonderwoods! A wonderful and fairytale esque place that is lovely but also a little bit scary…

Explorers and Conquistadores

MAKING HISTORY:

Let history come to life! The Making Historyseries takes the reader on an exciting journey through time and makes stops in different epochs in European history. In this second book we get to meet the first Europeans who went out into an unknown sea on the hunt for riches and glory – often with dire consequences for themselves and the people they encountered. Who were the people who risked everything to travel across the globe? Which peoples and cultures did they encounter – that they in many cases left in ashes? Here you can read about how this period in time changed the world forever. Come along to the time of the explorers!

Frida Malmgren – cartoonist, author, and psychologist – makes thoughtprovoking and knowledgeable portrayals of seven of the most wellknown explorers, in a boldly illustrated guide that is packed with facts and fun comic pages!
