CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

During the January meeting, the board nominated positions, and I am honoured to advise that I will remain as Chair, with Mr Marcus Tilbrook as Vice Chair. It would be dutiful to note that I will be briefly stepping away from NT Police Legacy duties to commence maternity leave in July. I am passionate about NT Police Legacy, and whilst I will remain an active board member, I look forward to my return in full capacity in 2025.

As we reflected on 2023 and the year that it was, we entered the new year with a goal to expand our fundraising opportunities and engagements with the wider community. It pleases me to say that 2024 has provided us with these opportunities, and the support shown from others keeps on giving. The number of volunteers who have put their hands up to support us in numerous ways has been overwhelming. Whether you have offered up your time or donated your craft, we thank you tremendously.

We have continued to expand our fundraising efforts, more importantly with upcoming events including our trivia night, which is to be held on 25th June at Darwin Ski Club. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via our Facebook page. Be sure to save the date, as it will be one not to be missed! And if trivia isn’t your thing, we would love to see you in July when we host a BBQ fundraiser at the Bunnings Palmerston site. Keep informed of upcoming events by subscribing to our emails – just contact us at secretary@ntpolicelegacy.com

You may recall last year we reintroduced our Police Legacy dogs for the first time in years. We had such an overwhelming positive response from the community, that we sold out in a matter of weeks. If you missed out, you will be pleased to know that we have more dogs on order, and they are due to arrive in the coming weeks. Make sure you follow us on Facebook to be notified of when they are in stock, as they will sell out fast!

And whilst 2024 has been kind to us on the fundraising front, it has also been a difficult few months with the passing of NT members, notably with the first anniversary of the passing of our dear friend and ex-board member Mrs Kiim Parnell. Kiim was a phenomenal woman, which was made evident in February when selected current and shadow Ministers also spoke of their personal testimonies and tributes to Kiim at Parliament House in Canberra.

It is sometimes easy to forget the impact many may have on our lives — but it shouldn’t be. Having worked for Police Credit Union for the last 12 years I have met many wonderful people who are sadly no longer with us. Some I have shared laughs with, and some I have cried with. But they are people I would call friends. Often, there are memories that pop up, and they act as constant reminders as to why I hold NT Police Legacy so close to my heart. For me, the best way to honour these friends is to support NT Police Legacy in every way I can. My hope for the remainder of 2024 is for you to do the same.

MEET OUR BOARD MEMBERS

WITH SUPERINTENDENT DREW SLAPE

Originally from South Australia, Drew relocated to the Northern Territory (NT) to join the NT Police in 2006. He has served across the Territory including Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Darwin and a number of remote stations.

Working predominantly in frontline policing and investigations he has a comprehensive understanding of the current pressures and challenges in the delivery of policing services in a complex and changing environment. Moving into Police leadership roles he sees his role as now providing the support and framework for his team to serve and protect their community.

Promoted to Superintendent in 2022, Drew, his wife Rhiannon and their young family moved back to the desert where they have settled into the relaxed life Alice Springs has to offer. He can be found camping with the family, hiking the local Larapinta trail, cycling and generally enjoying the great outdoors.

Drew was drawn to assist NT Police Legacy by the incredible work they undertake supporting the families of officers who have passed away. He is committed to improving business processes to streamline the support they provide and improve the profile of NT Police Legacy. Drew is an elected representative of Norther Territory Police Association (NTPA).

COMMEMORATION

On 16th May 2024 we commemorated the first anniversary of the passing of our dear friend and previous board member Mrs Kiim Parnell OAM.

It was on Wednesday 14th February that a condolence speech was read at Parliament House by the Leader of the Opposition by Mrs Lia Finocchiaro MLA and Ms Marie-Clare Boothby (Member for Brennan, Shadow Minister for Tourism and Hospitality; Business, Jobs and Training; Racing, Gaming and Licensing; Women; Veterans Affairs; Equality and Inclusion). Selected current and shadow Ministers also spoke to their own personal testimonies and tributes to Kiim, or from prepared testimonies as provided. It would be difficult to repeat the list of attributes, nominations and awards that were spoken about in Kiim’s

short, but busy, life. However, it is clear Kiim was passionate and proud of many things, some of which were her Family, Faith, Community and NT Police Legacy & Families – all of whom were high on her list.

Here is a personal message from the current NTPL Board Chair, Ms Mel Burnett –

Kiim was a wondrous woman who inspired many. When I commenced as a board member with NTPL she took the time to assist me with navigating the new processes and challenges that I faced. We worked together to collaboratively organise tasks and events and I found her to be a real go-getter. Kiim gave me encouragement whilst also instilling the confidence I needed to be able to grow in my role as a board member. Before she passed I made the effort to let her know how grateful I was for her guidance as she

has been incredibly inspiring for myself. These days I feel motivated to put my hand up and offer more of myself and I feel I owe a small part of that to Kiim.

LEGATEES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

STORYTELLER

In August 2023, every Year 7 student submitted a 100 word exciting story for the schools Storyathon competition in Humanities. The stories had to commence with ‘Suddenly’ and be interesting and creative. Every student in all the classes then voted for their favourite story and the winners were decided.

We are very pleased to announce Miss Anaise Maka came 2nd with her story titled ‘Saved by the Bell’. Anaise has given us permission to share her story below. What a great way to boost your tax return while making a difference on the issues that matter to you!

SAVED BY THE BELL BY

Suddenly I am in a room held as a hostage, being forced to look at the white board with absolute nonsense. I am not scared or terrified, but I am bored. Just really bored. Have you ever had that feeling when your parents tell you a story about “Back in their day” and you act like that you like it, but you don’t that’s exactly how I feel. I gaze out the window wondering how it feels to be free, but my thought gets cut off my kidnapper “Look at the board and focus!”. A bell ring’s … lunch time.

Dear Police Legacy,

I would really like to thank you so much for the continuous support you have provided over the years with my education grant. I really appreciate everything you do as it has allowed me to do things I may not have been able to do and achieve with my education.

I am currently a part of the Science, technology, engineering and mathematics strategy in school and I am doing well in my studies. The funds help me with all of my school needs. I really am deeply thankful and I know my father would be too.

Thank you, Jordyn Matthews

WINNER

Eilish played her very first soccer game for Port Adelaide Pirates Soccer Club.

Eilish, who is now in grade 2 at school, is a clever young lady excelling academically, as seen by her report cards from school. She loves to draw, colour in, do crafts, read and play on her tablet (security controlled by her Mumma of course).

Eilish is also starting to show a love for sports. She participated in both cricket and soccer as a "come and try" for kids, to see if she liked it. She loved both cricket and soccer but has decided to stick with soccer and also swims once a week for lessons. Eilish played her very first soccer game for Port Adelaide Pirates Soccer Club recently and had a ball! Her team won and she was super excited. Eilish is inspired to get in and have a go like some of the other girls in her team, who are already quite skillful at just 6/7 years old.

During the school holidays before Christmas 2023, Eilish went to Santa's Winter Wonderland in Adelaide. She got to meet Mrs. Claus which she was quite chuffed with – talk about one very happy kid!!

Things are also looking positive for Belinda, Eilish’s Mum, who is currently keeping very busy, juggling many hats all whilst building their new home. Both Belinda and Eilish are immensely grateful for the support they have continued to receive from NT Police Legacy – whether it be financial support for education expenses, birthday / Christmas gifts for Eilish, regular follow up and welfare checks – they are ever so appreciated at the level of support provided. Belinda and Eilish wish to thank everyone who continues to contribute to and support NT Police Legacy, from Police Officers to the wider community who support the Families of Police Legacy.

Eilish is daughter of Belinda Moore and Tony Henrys, who passed away in September 2019.
