Coming Soon The metallic trend has been injected with glamour this season, with everyday outfits getting a coating of heavy shimmer. Valentino, Vera Wang, Blumarine show us a modest side to this trend by raising collars, lengthening hemlines and loosening silhouettes creating the perfect day to night trend. Going all in isn’t for everyone, a metallic clutch or shoe added to any outfit gives just the right allure for getting this incandescent trend just right.

When it comes to adding edge this season, it’s all about the uniform right down to the opulent details. Military inspired fashion is one of the most adaptable trends out there and as new trends emerge, the desire for neutral coloured outerwear steadily remains. The army of models storming the catwalks however this season were not in the predictable camouflage print, designers opted instead for structured silhouettes with regal detailing in the form of epaulettes, brocades and large gold buttons.

For a daytime imperial look, invest in one key piece to showcase the trend; a brocade top or trophy sweat to create a subtle impact. It makes for a pretty quick and easy way to give your wardrobe an instant refresh for the new season, win-win!

FASHION & MELBOURNE HOTSPOTS: by Carolyn Higgins | richgirlsss.blogspot.co.uk WHAT DO YOU THINK IS DISTINCTIVE/DIFFERENT IN THE WAY PEOPLE DRESS IN MELBOURNE? I think a lot of the way we dress in Melbourne has to do with comfortability. We are a very stylish yet chilled out city; we like to embrace trends and stand out with bold pieces, however, living in a city where all four seasons can roll into in one day, we need to be on our toes to adapt to any weather. I personally feel that we dress for ‘events’ really well, especially with the Melbourne Cup, Melbourne Fashion Festival and other big events being held in our city. Melbourne is known for its individuality and thinking outside of the box. I feel that Melbournians are more daring with trying new things and aren’t afraid to be seen in trends that have been frowned upon in the past, ie. double denim. You won’t see the same outfit or item a million times, everyone has a different way of styling it. WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDED HOTSPOTS IN MELBOURNE? For dining | The Stables of Como, Babble Bar and Cafe, The Stokehouse For drinks | The Royal Saxon, Riverland Bar (along the Yarra) Time out | The Peninsula Hot Springs, Jam Factory cinema Fitness | 1000 Steps Kokoda Walk 22 | boohoo.com

CHUNG BLOCKBUSTER ACTRESS FASHION’S NEW ONE-TO-WATCH ON WORKING WITH LADY GAGA AND JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT

the interview

ja mie

CHUNG Besides the huge blockbusters she already has under her belt, a sea of indie films due to hit the film festival circuit, along with Sin City 2 currently storming the movie charts and a new Disney animation on the horizon (phew!), actress Jamie Chung has been popping up on our radar for different reasons.

Having featured on Elle.com, Glamour, Interview magazine and a regular on fashion and style website WhoWhatWear.com Jamie has proven herself as a one-to-watch on the fashion front too. We took our new collection with us to catch up with her in LA, getting the scope on everything from her career and where she grew up, to what she feels about hashtags and tourists in New York City… EMMA: WE LOVE YOUR BLOG! YOU’RE QUITE THE FREQUENT TRAVELLER, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP PACKING TIPS? Jamie: Man, I guess it really depends on how long the vacation is but my top packing tip would be to tr y and get ever y thing into one carr y on. It ’s the worst when your luggage doesn’t arrive at the same time you arrive and I feel like you can do a lot with one little carr y on, in terms of matching tops and bottoms. Key essentials being a cute pair of pumps, a pair of flats, a pair of sandals, depends on which season it is. But I feel like less is more.

OUT OF ALL THE PL ACES YOU’VE TRAVELLED TO, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION? I would have to say, after filming in a really cold New York winter, any thing with a white sand beach is my destination. Aruba…anywhere in the Caribbean is prett y nice. For fashionistas, I would say Santorini in 24 | boohoo.com

Greece. It has a lot of great white backdrops, the turquoise blue of the sea and it has the most incredible sunsets. It ’s a great place to shoot, but it ’s also ver y st ylish. Morocco is another great place to go to…but there’s just so many, New York, Paris, the list goes on! Hong Kong was really cool, it was quite busy but is my favourite shopping cit y. They have no sales tax and literally ever y thing that you’re looking for is there!

YOU STAR IN THE NEW SIN CIT Y FILM, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? It was weird! So, I’ve been on a green screen set before but this had zero props, it literally was just a green screen! And the crazy thing was there weren’t any actors either. So I’m in a scene with Josh Brolin, Rosario Dawson and Jamie King but they’re not physically there on set with me, they’re superimposed later into the scene so it looks like we’re on the same movie together, it was a crazy experience!

YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH A LITTLE BLACK DRESS

WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH SUCH A BIG CAST? I’ve worked on lots of big sets, but considering all the big stars like Lady Gaga, Eva Green, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but it ’s just weird being a part of such a big cast and not seeing a single soul on set, it ’s just you and the crew. I mean, we had lunch and there are a couple of days where you kind of intercept, you’re filming in the morning and then Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be filming in the afternoon, and we’d see each other at lunch, but really we are never on set at the same time.

WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR ST YLE, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE IN YOUR WARDROBE YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT? Just one?! Ooh…I would say you can’t go wrong with a little black dress, or a little black skirt, or a black midi skirt. I feel like you can do so much with staple pieces. During the winter it ’s my camel coat, it goes with ever y thing.

M a cey T o p $ 1 6

AND YOU LIVE IN NEW YORK… Yeah, L A and New York, so all my coats are in New York.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNERS?

Watch the behind the scenes video from our shoot on our YouTube channel

Ooh there are so many. I love Monique lhuillier for red carpets because it ’s so flow y, ethereal, girly and just beautiful. I love Rebecca Minkoff because her prints are always so fun, great for vacations as they always add a pop of colour. boohoo.com

CHUNG Harriet Cami $ 3 0 Caro l ine Cardig a n $ 5 0

26 | boohoo.com

WHO’S YOUR CELEBRIT Y ST YLE CRUSH? Olivia Palermo, I really admire her st yle. She’s so great with the high and low, the different prints, her staple pieces, she’s someone I really admire fashion-wise, her st yle is rare and I feel like I’m blowing her up ever y time I say it! Some of the other women that I follow [their st yle] only works editorially and not on the streets, but Olivia has a great street st yle.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN SAN FRANCISCO? San Francisco, you know, it ’s just like New York Cit y. It really allows you as a kid to be a hooligan. The public transport is fantastic and there’s always something to do. It also made me appreciate the great outdoors, you drive 40 minutes and you’re in Napa, you drive an hour and a half south and you’re in the Redwoods, it ’s just so beautiful and a great place to camp. So it ’s got a real great mix of cit y and nature. It ’s my favourite cit y in the world.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS TO A BIG CIT Y LIKE SF? Whether it ’s San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, where there is a lot of people traffic, DO NOT stop in the middle of the sidewalk to check your phone, to take a picture, just move to the side… just don’t…just not in the middle! I think that ’s the most annoying thing, when you’re tr ying to get somewhere and someone stops, it ’s the worst – you WILL get run over by pedestrians.

G

the interview

I FEEL LIKE I’M BLOWING HER UP EVERY TIME I SAY IT!

WHAT’S YOUR MOST PL AYED SONG ON SPOTIFY? Right now it ’s Sam Smith. It ’s a bit emo, but it ’s certainly Sam Smith. Or Portugal. The Man, it ’s a bit more upbeat!

WHAT’S YOUR MOST USED HASHTAG ON INSTAGRAM? I feel like I’m kind of phasing hashtags out. I don’t really like them…don’t you get annoyed at all the hashtags?! No more hashtags! Ooh, oh no, okay, so there is one…that I always use! It ’s #fail. Usually that ’s the funny one, prett y self-explanator y.

JAMIE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING OUR FALL COVER STAR. WE LOVED SHOOTING WITH YOU! Thanks, thanks for having me! I loved all of the looks! Sin Cit y 2 is in cinemas now and Disney animation Big Hero 6, is out soon. Read Jamie’s blog at what thechung.com

BEAUTYFIX

A/W14

The new season is underway; which means it’s time to toughen up your make-up with a winter ready palette. From autumnal shades to metallic touches, welcome to this season’s beauty master class. International Celebrity, Television & Fashion Make-up Artist, Heidi Scarlett King, has taken inspiration from the catwalk to show us how to get the coolest looks in just a few easy steps. HEIDI KING, International Make-up Artist

Eyes

Earthy shades of brown, grey and olive, as seen at Rodarte, made for one of the hottest looks for AW14, and it’s really easy to achieve:

1. Smudge a bronze cream shadow over the lid, gently apply to the lower rim and blend up into the brows (tip: for perfect blending use a cotton bud!)

3. Finish with a pair of ‘Louise’ false lashes from boohoo.com for added volume

Top Tip: 30 | boohoo.com

2. Dust a small amount of either aubergine or burgundy shadow on the centre and inner corners of the eyes (and blend again!)

Nails were worn ‘squoval’ at this season’s collections; a modern twist on the classic oval shape seen last season. This look is worn best darker shades so why not try a deep shade of red or purple polish.

Face Leaving behind the sheer tints of summer, winter requires a little extra coverage on the face. But by no means is it thick, or dry. This season designers were all about a dewy looking, flawless complexion and you can achieve the look with a few simple tips:

1. Prep the skin with a moisturiser to keep hydrated 2. Apply a full coverage foundation using a foundation brush in a circular buffing motion to create a natural and even finish

3. Using a kabuki brush sweep a matte bronzing powder over the face for a little colour

4. To finish dust the contours of the face with luminescent powder to create a radiant glow

Lips I personally love all the dark lip shades seen at the shows this season, especially the dark browns and berry tones that look great against all complexions. Here’s how to get the look:

1. Start by applying a lip pencil to define the lip line ever so slightly

2. For long lasting colour dab a small amount of concealer over the lips before applying lip stain

3. Choose from a deep shade of burgundy or plum and layer up for a bold look. ‘Models Own Very Berry Lip Stix’ is my favourite shade. boohoo.com

AN INTERVIEW WITH:

JAKARTA CLUB For those of you who are yet to hear about Jakarta Club, they are an up-and-coming four piece indie pop group based in the North of England, with that fabulous Northern charm. We met with the band, made up of Chris (vocals), Ed (guitar), Joe (bass) and Josh (drums) for a chat and this is what they had to say… Which festivals have you played at and been to this year? We’ve not focused on festivals as much this year as we have before, our focus is currently on recording our new stuff but we’ve played Isle of Wight festival and also Kendal Calling which have both been amazing. We got to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at Isle of Wight who have always been a massive inspiration to us, so that was incredible! Chris: I got to go to Glastonbury this year and was absolutely blown away, especially with Paolo Nutini’s new material- and of course Dolly Parton! What would you say are your festival essentials? All the important stuff- A bag of wine, pork pies, oranges, baby wipes (got to keep clean!) and you can’t ever forget a pair of ‘freaky’ shorts! All in all would you say that it’s been a good year so far for Jakarta Club? Yeah, it’s been a pretty exciting year for us with meeting producers, production teams and going into the studio. We’ve been sculpting a new sound and a new image, which is coming together nicely. We also toured Latvia recently; we had a great time there and were treated very well! So what’s the plan for the rest of the year? Well we’re going to be moving to Leeds together soon so after that we’ll be spending a lot of time in the studio with a great team that’s been put together. We’ll be working towards getting 46 | boohoo.com

Jakarta Club from L to R: Ed, Joe, Josh and Chris

something really special down and making sure it’s not rushed so we can bring the full package and make an impact - everyone loves a full package! Then we’ll be releasing everything. Are you planning a UK tour at any point? Only after the singles are released, then we plan to head over to all the main cities of the UK and see what they think! You mentioned you are all moving in together, are you expecting harmony amongst the band or is this going to be a nightmare? We are guessing it’s going to be a case of the good, the bad and the obscure - in other words we expect to take the good with the bad.

We’re also taking bets on who’s going to be the first one to hit Joe. Josh: The stakes are pretty high; I’ve got £50 on myself!

Imagine being the greatest guitarist ever – now that would be a conversation starter! Joe: I’d go for Keith Moon…maybe without the excessive lifestyle… Josh: Simple. Tommy Lee. The guy got Pamela Anderson!

What’s the most exciting gig you’ve played - it seems like there’s been some good ones? We really enjoyed Kendal Calling, especially for the first time last year. It has a special place in our hearts as we’ve been going for years and we got a really good reception! We went from whipper snappers and punters to fully fledged eagles flying…and playing. We also really enjoyed headlining The Brickyard and of course playing in Latvia was pretty special.

Finally, when are we expecting world domination or maybe just a new single from JC? Well the estimated time of world domination is about 3 years. In the meantime we’re not rushing the next single; we want it to be just right and to our liking to ensure said domination. But you’ll hear some of the new stuff in the next few months, after we move in together there will be a push to get stuff out.

Thanks guys, you’ve been great!

Who’s your favourite artist(s) at the moment/ what are you listening to? A bit of a mix really, James Blake is an all-round favourite at the moment. Also enjoying the sounds of Tom Misch, Rage Against The Machine, Paolo Nutini’s new stuff and a throwback to The Mars Volta - again a bit of a mixed bag from us all! Who have been your inspirations music and style wise? Joe: Les Claypool, who is also a bassist, has been an inspiration of mine. In terms of style, I just wish I could dress like Prince every day. Josh: My musical inspiration would have to be Keith Moon which I guess goes with my love for the 60s mods and rockers vibe styling. I think collectively we are quite inspired by Oasis, except we believe we have better hair! If you could be anyone dead or alive who would it be? Chris: I’d have to say Henry 8th. He had it all really didn’t he? He loved his women, food and fighting. I’d happily be him. Ed: For me, it would have to be Jimi Hendrix.
