HELLO! BOOK-IT REPERTORY THEATRE’S ARTS AND EDUCATION PROGRAM is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to read. We are proud to offer you an array of programs that provide forums for learning, growth, exploration, and participation in the intangible benefits of arts integration. Specifically, our touring program offers a diverse range of stories to schools, libraries, and community venues throughout Washington state. The unique Book-It Style® helps students connect with books on multiple levels as they ask questions, exchange ideas, and make meaning out of what they read, see, and hear – all while being “up on their feet.” I invite you to look over our brochure; please let my colleagues and I know how we can be of service to you in your classrooms. Sincerely, Annie DiMartino Director of Education annied@book-it.org

The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay by Susan Hood, Illustrated by Sally Wern Comport
Ada Ríos grew up in Cateura, a small, poor town built on a landfill in Paraguay. Ada’s Abuela taught her to love music, but playing an instrument was out of her family’s reach. When music teacher Favio Chavez arrived, he had a crazy idea that might allow the children of Cateura to do more than dream of playing music: they would make instruments from materials from the trash heap. It worked! And now, the Recycled Orchestra plays all over the world. This true story inspires us to think creatively and work hard for the things that matter to us.
TOUR DATES: JAN - MARCH GRADES: K - 6 THEMES: science, innovative thinking, family dynamics, perseverance
WHOOSH! Lonnie Johnson’s Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions
by Chris Barton, Illustrated by Don Tate A love for
rockets, robots, inventions, and a mind for creativity were present in Lonnie Johnson’s early life. Growing up in a house full of brothers and sisters, Lonnie demonstrated persistence and a passion for problem-solving that became the cornerstone of his career as an engineer and his work with NASA. But it is Lonnie’s invention of the Super Soaker water gun that has made the most memorable splash in popular culture.
TOUR DATES: MARCH - JUNE GRADES: K - 6 THEMES: poetry, refugees, family dynamics, Vietnam War, dreams
INSIDE OUT AND BACK AGAIN
by Thanhha Lai For all the ten years of her life, Hà has only known
Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, Hà discovers the foreign world of Alabama – the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food . . . and the strength of her very own family.
