Bringing Books to Life OUR MISSION

To provide an interactive relationship between youth and literature through diverse theatrical productions and educational programs that promote the joy of reading, enhance student and teacher learning, and inspire the imagination.

Book-It Repertory Theatre’s Arts and Education Program is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages to read. The program tours a diverse range of stories to schools, libraries, and community venues throughout Washington State; conducts long-term residencies in schools; offers teacher professional development; and presents student matinées of Book-It’s mainstage shows. All our work is adapted in the unique Book-It Style®, where the narrative is brought to life by the characters in the story. The Book-It Style helps students connect with books on multiple levels as they ask questions, exchange ideas, and make meaning out of what they read, see, and hear—all while being “up on their feet.” The entire program is closely aligned with research-based reading instruction, Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts, and state standards in theatre.

Anytime a book is brought to life it increases students’ interest in reading. Excellent production! JUDY PIGER, EMMA CARSON ELEMENTARY

CJ doesn’t understand why he and his grandmother have to take the bus after church and not drive a car like everyone else. On the bus, he asks why he doesn’t have an iPod to listen to like the other passengers. With each question about what he doesn’t have, CJ’s grandmother tells him what he does have. With his grandmother’s help, CJ is able to see the beauty in the world around him and appreciate the things he has. To continue serving our diverse audience, this production will be performed bilingually in Spanish and English. For more information: 206.428.6266

To get to someplace special, Tricia Ann must navigate her way through Jim Crow laws, hurtful signs, and rude strangers. Quite a daunting task, and it begins to look like Tricia Ann will never make it until she remembers what her grandmother told her. “You are somebody—a human being—no better, no worse than anyone else in this world.” With this encouragement, Tricia Ann may just make it to someplace special. A Book-It residency is an immersive, customized program that creates an interactive relationship between youth and the written word. Each program is designed with the teacher to address specific fiction or non-fiction texts, content, academic standards, and student needs. All residencies feature professionally trained Book-It teaching artists and culminate in formal or informal performances of the text. Students explore literary elements such as character, setting, plot, theme, and point of view to gain a deeper understanding of the text and collaborate with peers to make it come alive on stage. Residencies develop the skills and knowledge students need for economic and civic success in the 21st century workforce by fostering higher order Thinking. Through the synthesis of literature and theatre, the program inspires students to analyze and interpret text in a highly personal, fun, and physical way! RESIDENCY MENU

Book-It Style Productions: Students analyze literary elements—such as character, setting, plot, theme, and point of view—and adapt those interpretations into a script for presentations in the Book-It Style.
