Many of you come to Book-It in the evening or on a Sunday afternoon to see great works of literature produced on stage, but did you know that tens of thousands of kids see great works of children’s literature brought to life in their school gymnasiums, auditoriums, and libraries? Book-It’s school touring program has been in existence as long as the company: 23 years. Founder and Co-Artistic Director Jane Jones is fond of calling our program “Molière’s Wagon” after the French actor/playwright whose theatre company toured all over France in wagons carrying all that they needed to perform their shows. Book-It has been doing the same since its inception. Over time, the program has grown to include live theatre productions adapted from children’s literature, workshops that connect literacy objectives directly to the staged productions, long-term residencies, and teacher professional development to integrate the Book-It Style™ with classroom instruction. Professional teaching artists and actors perform and guide our programs that visit an average of 260 schools and 70,000 young people, families, and teachers in the Puget Sound region annually. And now…We have a VAN! We are thrilled to have the means to take our programs farther than ever before, all thanks to an extraordinary gift from Paul G. Allen and Jody Allen in

honor of their late mother, Faye G. Allen. Faye Allen was a Seattle teacher known for saying, “What’s better than a good book?” She understood the power of literature and how it can inspire young individuals and get them engaged in their communities. She also loved theatre. This gift in her honor will bring Book-It’s literature-come-to-life performances and workshops to school districts and counties in our state that currently have little to no access to the arts. Not only will this gift physically enable us to get to the regions, it will also make the program financially feasible for schools. The program expansion will happen in stages over three years. In its inaugural year, we anticipate reaching ten new schools and community venues, five counties, and six school districts. Art in schools can change lives. Theatre integrated programs, like Book-It, can impact reading and learning. Our dear friend and colleague, Andrea Allen, director of education for Seattle Repertory Theatre, who recently passed away, believed that the arts have the power to radically transform education. In her honor we redouble our efforts to continue this powerful work and echo her call to action, “Vive la Revolution!” We look forward to telling you more about this new adventure; until then, enjoy winter with your friends and family!

John Irving was born in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1942. He attended Philips Exeter Academy, where his stepfather taught Russian History, and where he began to wrestle competitively, a sport he credits with teaching him discipline and perseverance. A year into college, Irving went abroad, studied at the University of Vienna and roamed Europe on a motorcycle, absorbing many of the experiences that would later find their way into his novels. After returning to the U.S., he enrolled in the University of New Hampshire, and graduated in 1965. He married and became a father at 23. Already set on a writing career, he earned an MFA from the distinguished Creative Writing program at the University of Iowa, where his instructors included Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. MFA in hand, Irving returned to New England with his growing family in 1967, and took a job as Assistant Professor of English at Windham College in Vermont. His first novel, Setting Free the Bears (1968), drew on his European experiences—the darkly comic story was inspired by an actual incident from the last days of World War II. It introduced many of the themes and techniques he has explored throughout his career: the disasters of history and the capriciousness of fate, dramatized through interlocking stories within stories. His second novel, The Water-Method Man (1972), revisited the Austrian locale of Setting Free the Bears, while also satirizing academic life in America. That same year, Irving was appointed Writer-in-Residence at the University of Iowa; Irving’s novel, The 158-Pound Marriage (1974), was written there. In 1975, he took a job as Assistant Professor of English at Mount Holyoke College, and even as he began to enjoy success as a writer, also served as Writer-in-Residence at the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and Brandeis University. Many bestselling novels have followed: The World According to Garp (1978, National Book Award), The Hotel New Hampshire (1981)—both presented casts of vividly imagined

eccentric characters, and both of which were made into films; The Cider House Rules (1985) was a critical success and also picked up by Hollywood—he wrote the screenplay himself, and received the 2000 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay; A Prayer for Owen Meany (1989); a collection of short stories, Trying To Save Piggy Sneed (1996), that includes a “miniature autobiography,” The Imaginary Girlfriend, embodying his reflections on writing and wrestling; A Widow for One Year (1998); A Son of the Circus (1994); The Fourth Hand (2001); Until I Find You (2004); and the most recent bestseller, Last Night in Twisted River (2009). Throughout his work, he has expressed a warm affection for humanity in all its astounding variety. His writing reflects a deep admiration for the courage and good humor of men, women, and children in confronting the cruelties and catastrophes of life—all for which his work draws frequent comparisons to the work of Charles Dickens. We gathered this past Monday to commence our rehearsal process for Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant, from the 8th time over a span of 16 years. the My friends and colleagues always inquire what it’s like to “re-mount” a show so many times. I think they worry I will not be challenged by it. And I am always astonished by these concerns. I feel it’s the equivalent of pulling off a beautifully executed pirouette or a triple time step…..or summoning a perfectly pitched harmony from the ether… it takes such care and attention to detail. Getting the soul of the piece is delicate and tricky. Each new cast member brings a fresh and complicated dynamic to the process. Every year I have them share their memories of Christmases past, their participations in Pageants during their youth and just how much of the Nativity story they were actually capable of wrapping their brains around. The stories are hilarious and confounding. I know this is why I am so dedicated to these chapters from John Irving’s A Prayer for Own Meany. He tells it like it is. The blessed and cursed holidays, when we gather as family to rejoice in our communion and curse our circumstances. To love and adore our traditions and to secretly be checking out the closest exit routes. We sing the words to the carols incorrectly; we often
worship and adore the event yet forget the teachings and as children we make up our own interpretations of all the wonders this traditional holiday has to offer. It is magical. It is historical. But it is also stressful. Thankfully, John Irving brings his own particular blend of humor and pathos to our rescue. Every year I laugh and cry through these rehearsals, we all do. And every year I wish I could return to those magical days of childhood when my parents were still alive and loaded us into the station wagon and drove to St. John’s Episcopal Church to witness or participate in Christmas Eve Mass. And then eventually after all the egg nog and the notes to Santa and the reading of the nativity story, my parents would plead with me to sing their favorite Christmas Carol; “Deck the Halls with Balls of Charlie,” because that’s the way I learned it. To this day I still sing it that way. I hope this wonderful and wacky evening puts you in touch with your memories too. It is one of our Book-It family favorites. Happy Holidays!

Original recipe makes 5 servings 1 pound ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped 1 (10.75 ounce) can Campbell's Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup (Regular or 98% Fat Free) 1 tablespoon ketchup 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 3 cups frozen Tater Tots Directions 1. Cook beef and onion in 10-inch skillet over medium high heat until beef is well browned, stirring to break up the meat. Pour off fat. 2. Stir soup, ketchup and Worcestershire into skillet. Spoon beef mixture into 12x8 inch shallow baking dish. Arrange potatoes around edge of casserole 3. Bake at 425 degrees F for 25 minutes or until potatoes are done.
1 lg. can crushed pineapple 12 to 15 lg. marshmallows or 1 1/2 c. miniature marshmallows 1 pkg. lime Jello 1 c. cottage cheese 1/2 c. chopped nuts 1 c. whipped cream Directions Drain pineapple and add water to make 1 1/2 cups juice. Put in saucepan and boil for 1 minute. Add marshmallows and melt. Add lime Jello and dissolve. Let cool until thickens. Add crushed pineapple, cottage cheese, nuts and whipped cream and stir.
1 (2 lb.) rabbit 2 lbs. onions (very small, white) 1 clove garlic 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup vinegar 2 tbsp. tomato paste 4 bay leaves 1 tsp. whole black pepper Salt to taste
1 chicken, cut up 1 1/2 lg. onio ns, sliced 10 to 12 oz. Coca Cola 10 to 12 oz. catsup Direction s Lay chicken in baking dish. Mix Coca Cola 350 and catsup. Pour over chicken. Bake at degrees for 1 to 1 1/2 hour s.
Directions Cut rabbit into pieces. Saute in olive oil. Peel onions and leave whole. Add remaining ingredients. Cook gently until tender. More may be added if necessary. Variation: Veal tongue may be substituted for the rabbit.

Josh is honored to reprise the role of Owen Meany this year. Acting credits include Neighborhood 3 with Washington Ensemble Theatre, Marya Sea Kaminski’s Condo Millennium, Wonderland with theater simple, and The Tempest and King Lear with NYU. Additionally, he has been in readings and workshops with Book-It Repertory Theatre, New Century Theatre Company, and The Satori Group. Josh has also had the privilege of working as a director, assistant director, and stage manager at theatres in Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, and Montana. He graduated with honors from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Having graduated last spring from the University of Washington, her recent stage credits include Logainne in The...Putnam County Spelling Bee, Eurydice in Eurydice, and Wendla in Spring’s Awakening with the Undergraduate Theater Society, as well as Heidi in The Secret in the Wings and Moth in Love’s Labour’s Lost on the main stage. Most recently, she performed as Mari in the multimedia project Costly Desires.

Rachel is a recent graduate of the University of Washington where she majored in drama and comparative history of ideas and minored in dance. She recently appeared in The Town Theatre’s production of Domesticity and STAGEright’s production of Calling Nancy Drew as George Fayne. Some of her favorite roles at the UW include Lady Macduff, Lennox, the Third Witch, and Third Murderer in Macbeth, and Sharice in Stone Cold Dead Serious with the Undergraduate Theater Society; and Miranda in Rough Magic and Florette in The Two Orphans with the UW School of Drama. Other roles include Rosannah in Brilliant Traces at the Market Theatre and Mrs. Winthrop in The Secret Garden at Village Theatre’s KIDSTAGE.

Andrew has appeared at Book-It since the 20th Century. Among memorable roles, he appeared as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, and Wayne in Border Songs. Recently, Andrew happily contributed to Book-It’s Circumbendibus, playing numerous roles in Jesus’ Son. Other theatres he has appeared at include the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, ACT Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, American Player’s Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, Oregon Repertory Theatre, Seattle Group Theatre, Harold Clurman Theatre, Cortland Repertory Theatre, Village Theatre, Portland Center Stage, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and both the Eugene and Seattle Operas.

Shannon now proudly counts herself among the Owen Meany veterans, having been in the pageant in 2011. She studied drama and history at the University of Washington and her theatre adventures have taken her everywhere from Washington, D.C., playing patients for medical school training, to Scotland and France (twice!) with original, devised work. Most recently you may have seen her acting with Endangered Species Project in their monthly staged readings.

Jana is thrilled to be coming back for the second year in Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant. Since last season she has been seen in local theatres as Tricia in Costly Desires with Drybones Theater Company, Patty Simcox in Grease with Renton Civic Theatre, Grace in Cinderella with Snoqualmie Falls Forest Theater, and Virtue in Anything Goes with Northwest Savoyards. She has also been on the set of “Dead of Night” as Teresa with NBC Peacock Productions/Investigation Discovery. Jana graduated from Western Washington University with a BA in theatre arts in 2010.

Daniel is a proud graduate of the Los Angeles City College Theatre Academy and happy to be returning to Book-It and Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant. Around Seattle, Harry has worked as an actor, director, teacher, and sound designer with Book-It, Seattle Shakespeare Company and its Wooden O Theatre, Theater Schmeater, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Balagan Theatre, Seattle Public Theater, Consolidated Works, and Cornish College of the Arts, among others. Since then she has performed in various Seattle productions including King Arthur and the Knights of the Playground with Balagan Theatre, The Comedy of Errors with GreenStage, 14/48, and Suffering, Inc. with Pony World Theatre.

Ashley is excited to be reprising the role of Mary Beth Baird at Book-It where she was also seen as Harriet Smith in Emma. She spent her senior year of college as Book-It’s associate artistic intern and had the privilege of assistant directing The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears with Jane Jones. Her most recent roles include Martine in A Doctor in Spite of Himself at Intiman and Natalie in Distracted at ArtsWest. She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with honors and holds a BFA in theatre.

A seasoned touring actor, he has worked with both Seattle Shakespeare Company and Book-It’s Arts & Education Programs. Juliet with Arts on the Waterfront; and has collaborated on and performed in worldpremiere productions at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and with the Washington Ensemble Theatre. He will next reprise his role in La Bohème at Seattle Opera.

Richard is thrilled to be back with the cast of Owen Meany. He recently appeared in Ramayana at ACT Theatre. He has performed at the Guthrie Theater, Intiman, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Book-It, the Northwest Asian American Theatre, SIS Productions, Village Theatre, and Seattle Children’s Theatre. Richard is an instructor in acting in several Seattle communities, and is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Washington’s School of Drama. He holds an MFA from the University of Washington’s Professional Actor Training Program, is a graduate of the prestigious Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, and has a BS in cellular, molecular, developmental biology. He is married to Serin Ngai, and has a talented daughter, Viola.

Kathleen is delighted to once again reprise her ear-twisting stewardess role, Barb Wiggin. Previous Book-It credits include Snow Falling on Cedars as Etta Heines and Eleanor Chambers, and she was in the premiere production of the musical, Red Ranger Came Calling as Old Timer 2. Her other roles include Maud Dunlop in The Music Man and Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, both with Village Theatre, Mona Kent in Dames at Sea with Classics Unlimited, Nettie in Carousel, Mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver!, Miss Jones in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, all with Civic Light Opera, and Ensemble in Me and My Girl at The 5th Avenue Theatre.

Jane is the founder of Book-It and founding co-artistic director of Book-It Repertory Theatre, with Myra Platt. In her 24 years of staging literature, she has performed, adapted, and directed works by such literary giants as Charles Dickens, Eudora Welty, Edith Wharton, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Pam Houston, Raymond Carver, Frank O’Connor, Ernest Hemingway, Colette, Amy Bloom, John Irving, John Steinbeck, Daphne du Maurier, and Jane Austen. A veteran actress of 30 years, she has played leading roles in many of America’s most prominent regional theatres. Most recently, she played the role of Miss Havisham in Book-It’s Great Expectations. Film and TV credits include The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Singles, Homeward Bound, “Twin Peaks,” and Rose Red. She co-directed with Tom Hulce at Seattle Rep, Peter Parnell’s adaptation of John Irving’s The Cider House Rules, which enjoyed successful runs here in Seattle, at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles (Backstage West Award, best director) and in New York (Drama Desk Nomination, best director). Jane directed Pride and Prejudice and Twelfth Night at Portland Center Stage which won the 2008 Drammy award for Best Direction and Production. Dan is happy to be revisiting one of his favorite productions in which he has participated at Book-It. Dan is the designer/ technical director for the theatre department at North Seattle Community College, a position he has held for over 22 years, and has been on the staff of the Bellevue Youth Theatre for the past 12 years as a designer and theatre day camp director. Additionally, he has designed ArtsWest’s On The Verge, Black Gold, Measure For Pleasure, Love Song, Evil Dead: the Musical (Broadway World Award, Best Scenic Designer 2010), and Shipwrecked: an Entertainment; Seattle Public Theater’s Three Days of Rain, Dying City, and The Happy Ones; and at SecondStory Repertory and Theater Schmeater. Next up will be Anna Karenina at Book-It.
Clare is excited to be working with Book-It again where she previously worked on Red Ranger Came Calling, Great Expectations, Sense and Sensibility, and last year’s Owen Meany’s Christmas Pageant. Clare is a designer and founding member of The Satori Group with whom she designed iLove: and Hello Again, The Investigation of the Murder in El Salvador, TRAGEDY: a tragedy, Artifacts of Consequence, and Fabulous Prizes. She has also worked at Seattle Public Theater and Washington Ensemble Theatre. Her next project is reWilding with The Satori Group in the spring.

Christine is very excited to be working on her first show at Book-It. Most recently she has stage managed Godspell and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at Studio East. She is also currently working on Romeo and Juliet and Into the Woods also at Studio East. Christine completed the stage management internship at Seattle Repertory Theatre during the 2011-12 season. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon with a BA in theatre arts and English, where she also stage managed Burning Vision and Love’s Labour’s Lost. Christine is also working as the education associate for Studio East.

A graduate of Whitman College and the Yale School of Drama, Anders served as production manager for Tacoma Actors Guild and as technical director for the California Theatre Center and Whitman College. As a carpenter, he has created scenery for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Intiman, and Yale Rep, among others. On stage, Anders has performed at Seattle Shakespeare Company, Baltimore Center Stage, Delaware Theatre Company, Yale Rep, Book-It, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Harlequin Productions, Tacoma Actors Guild, and as a guest artist with the Boston Pops. In New York, he has performed at the Performing Garage, NY Theatre Workshop, and La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. Anders has appeared on “As the World Turns” and “One Life to Live,” the feature films Police Beat and Helene, and in industrial training films and voice-overs.

Charlotte is an administrator, director, producer, and educator who has been working in the producing and presenting fields for 25 years. Before moving back to the Seattle area in September 2003, she was general manager at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts. As president of her own consulting firm, Scarlet Productions, she has worked with companies across the country, including Chitresh Das Dance Company in San Francisco, Ben Munisteri Dance in New York, Seattle Theatre Group, EnJoy Productions in Seattle, and Westwind, Inc. in Oregon, among many others. She has taught at Seattle Pacific University, the University of Washington, the Evergreen State College, and the University of Puget Sound. She has been an adjunct faculty member at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. for seven years. Ms. Tiencken is a member of SDC, the union of stage

a tempest in a pot of tea When we first started out, times were tough. Some of you may remember the blue tea kettle marked “donations” placed at the theatre exit after each performance. We literally counted on what was collected from friends like you as we divided the money among the cast as pay at the end of the evening. Our very first major donation, a check for $1,000, was deposited in that tea kettle. Wouldn’t you know it; we are still using that very same tea kettle in the lobby all these years later (and a bedazzled addition.) We have a soft spot for this little tea kettle and tonight we ask you to consider joining the tradition by making a gift to Book-It. Our mission is to transform great literature into great theatre through simple and sensitive production and to inspire our audiences to read. 2010 Mayor’s Arts Award-winner and recipient of the 2012 Governer’s Arts & Heritage Award, Book-It Repertory Theatre was founded 23 years ago as an artists’ collective, adapting short stories for performance and touring them throughout the Northwest. Today, with 99 world-premiere adaptations of literature to its credit—many of which have garnered rave reviews and gone on to subsequent productions all over the country—Book-It is widely respected for the consistent artistic excellence of its work.
