COVER STORY | BERT JOHNSTON XLIBRIS AUTHOR BERT JOHNSTON TAKES READERS ON A JOURNEY THROUGH FIFTEEN STORIES EVOKING GEOFFREY CHAUCER’S LITERARY CLASSIC.

A Modern-day Literary Pilgrimage Written in Chaucer-style verse, The Canterbury Hall Tales are “a treat for people, young and old, who enjoy the humor and adventure of Chaucer’s stories,” says author Bert Johnston. In his book, which takes place in the twenty-first century, residents of Canterbury Hall gather around a table to tell each other tales just as Chaucer’s pilgrims did on their way to Canterbury in the 1300s. Like Chaucer’s stories, these fifteen tales are contemporary to their times, and sometimes the accounts of the persons who tell these tales are as interesting as the stories themselves. Johnston is a lifelong writer who published poetry while in grade school, edited an award-winning weekly high school paper, and, as a Presbyterian minister, wrote sermons and church newsletters for forty years. Now retired and living in Spanish Fort, Alabama, Johnston enjoys the pleasures of writing fiction and has written two novels prior to The Canterbury Hall Tales.

“ Storytelling is an art to be cultivated. It brings people together in a way that listening to television does not. ”

When asked about what influenced his writing, Johnston shares that, as a senior at Centre College in Kentucky, he was privileged to study Chaucer under Dr. Hardin Craig, head of the English department at the university and a leading authority on Shakespeare and the literature of his era. As a visiting professor at his alma mater, Dr. Craig taught an honors course in which Chaucer was a major subject. “I have loved The Canterbury Tales ever since,” says Johnston. Johnston was inspired to write The Canterbury Hall Tales when, several years ago, he found himself with four to five short stories that had no obvious relationships to each other. It was then that he remembered how Chaucer’s pilgrims were united by their storytelling along the road to Canterbury. “I envisioned a new set of Canterbury tales told by elderly people united not by a pilgrimage but by their fellowship around the dinner table at their senior residence,” he says. Johnston then wrote enough additional stories to form a collection to be called The Canterbury Hall Tales, and put them into Chaucer-style verse. Johnston wants his readers to understand that “storytelling is an art to be cultivated” and adds that “it brings people together in a way that listening to television does not.” His advice to fellow authors is simple and straightforward: “Edit, edit, edit; proof, proof, proof; and believe in yourself enough to stick with it until you get it published.”

THE A LIST | SUSANNE BACON SUSANNE BACON, A NATIVE OF GERMANY, IS A COLUMNIST AND THE SELFPUBLISHED AUTHOR OF FIVE BOOKS (INCLUDING HER LATEST, CLEAN CUTS). HERE, IN HER OWN WORDS, BACON TELLS US ABOUT HER JOURNEY AS AN AUTHOR, HER NEW BOOK, AND THE FICTITIOUS COMMUNITY OF WYCLIFF.

Creator of a Community English is not my mother tongue. I was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and I fell in love with books and telling stories from the start. My favorite picture books were in English, so the first written words I was able to identify were also in English! I studied literature and linguistics at Stuttgart University and graduated with a double MA. After freelancing as a journalist for a local newspaper, I became an editor and then the editorin-chief of a trade magazine. I didn’t think I had it in me to write a novel until one day I vacationed on the British Channel island of Guernsey. Archives concerning its World War II era had recently been opened, and a story simply flew to me. Within a year, I had written a historical novel (although I never found a German publisher for it).

“ Your writing experience is another person’s reading experience–do your best to make it a good one! ”

I moved to Washington State eight years ago, married to a US citizen. In 2014, I made a deathbed promise to my mother to have my manuscript published for the seventieth anniversary of V-Day. Since the release of Islands on Storm—I apologize for the botched title translation—today I write in English from the first draft—I’ve been writing a series of novels located in the town of Wycliff, in the Puget Sound area. Although Wycliff is fictitious, I include a lot of local color from western Washington in all my novels. I also weave in real people and businesses, and the backs of the books always feature some recipes connected with the story. Clean Cuts is the fourth of my Wycliff novels. It’s about a recently paraplegic chef who badly struggles to come to terms with his new situation in life, while his girlfriend tries to keep their relationship and their joint business, a bistrorestaurant, going. An old friend of theirs comes to their rescue, but he carries his own bundle of problems that might sink them all. I’m an avid reader, and the most influential books for me were probably the novels by Elisabeth Ogilvie and Maeve Binchy. Both authors had very strong ties to a specific region and wrote about the same circle of fictitious people, struggling through everyday situations. This mixture of ordinary life, local color, and remeeting characters in a series is intriguing to me. I wouldn’t be a writer if I didn’t say the writing itself was my favorite part of selfpublishing. Self-publishing means that there are no deadlines; you can take all the time you need or want. Publishing with AuthorHouse also means you get a perfect product. My advice to other aspiring writers? Just write. Whether you publish or not, by writing you leave a footprint, a message. If you publish, try to make it worthwhile. Have somebody else test-read and edit your work. Rewrite again. And again. And again. Your writing experience is another person’s reading experience—do your best to make it a good one!

THE A LIST | SUKANYA SENGUPTA PARTRIDGE INDIA AUTHOR SUKANYA SENGUPTA DISCUSSES HER NEW BOOK, A TALE OF ROMANCE WITH A CHILLING REVELATION.

Crime and Passion In Sukanya Sengupta’s book Beyond the Passage of Time, medical students Piya and Joy are inseparable friends in college despite being poles apart. When Piya meets an impressive journalist, Abir, her world changes in leaps and bounds. But just as Piya decides who she wants to spend the rest of her life with, she witnesses a gruesome crime involving organ trade. Gradually she realizes who the brain behind it all is. This deep, dark secret will leave her scarred. “It is a story of friendship, love, and betrayal with a backdrop of crime and pathos woven intrinsically with passion,” says Sengupta.

“ As a kid I was urged to read a lot of storybooks besides being taught to paint, sing, and play musical instruments. Naturally, I started growing fond of all things creative. ”

Born into a family that encouraged culture, Sengupta was raised with education as a priority over other things. “As a kid I was urged to read a lot of storybooks besides being taught to paint, sing, and play musical instruments. Naturally, I started growing fond of all things creative,” she says. Reading was an integral part of Sengupta’s upbringing, so taking up writing was a natural succession to all of her forays into literature. “I started with writing a diary. Having stayed away from my hometown and my grandfather, I used to write letters to him by hand,” Sengupta says. After letters came blogs and articles in various magazines, “which finally culminated in a deep desire to write a novel,” she adds. Although she studied and graduated in Information Technology, Sengupta did not quite enjoy it. She decided to do something that would hone her creative skill and help her make her mark outside the IT world. “My gray cells made me realize that management is my calling,” she says. For two years, Sengupta worked and studied until she had earned a place in one of the financial giants in India. “I worked in marketing and business strategy for almost a decade before calling it quits to take care of my daughter. During that break, I thought what better way to utilize my time than to do what I love doing the most—writing? And the result is Beyond the Passage of Time.” Despite her achievements and passion for writing, Sengupta is modest when it comes to advising other authors. “I am nobody to give advice,” she says. “However, if I must, my only advice is: if you wish to be a writer, write. Just keep on writing till you feel all the juice in your brain has dried up and you have nothing left to pour out, and you’ll see by the end of it all, you have already become a successful author.”

THE A LIST | JEFFREY L. CARNETT JEFFREY L. CARNETT’S NEW RELEASE, THE FLUTE PLAYER FROM URUMQI, TAKES THE READER ACROSS CHINA AND THE COUNTRY’S RADICALLY DIFFERENT CULTURES.

A Trans-China Saga The Flute Player from Urumqi, a new novel by Jeffrey L. Carnett, entices the reader with the exotic setting of western China—a territory that historically and culturally has been more associated with Central Asia. The book dramatizes these differences through a cast of characters that includes Ayşe Altay, a Turkic Muslim woman who serves as the novel’s protagonist. The hard circumstances of her life and then her imprisonment and journey across China are the thread through which Carnett weaves his exciting narrative. Carnett himself is a veteran of the Far East, including China, having lived in Hong Kong since 1995. A podiatrist and acupuncturist by profession, he earned a master of fine arts degree several years ago and decided to combine his writing finesse with his passion and interest in China.

“ The themes of loyalty to family and community are applicable to all readers. “

“The Flute Player from Urumqi started as a short story about a Chinese girl who discovered her mother was an ethnic minority in China,” Carnett says. “I decided to try to write the story from the point of view of the mother (a Uyghur woman) at a point before the child is born.” The depiction of women plays a central role in Carnett’s tale. “One thing that I enjoy in the novel is the strong female characters in the story. The role of women in forming society is often overlooked, and I think Ayşe’s story gives us an opportunity to see how women play a positive role in our history and future,” Carnett says. Other main themes include the treatment of minorities in China (the country has over fifty) and the spirit of community. “My story is a way to represent the little attention paid to minority groups in China,” says Carnett. “I want readers to see the harsh aspects of life in China, especially for minorities.” He adds, “Overall, the themes of loyalty to family and community in The Flute Player from Urumqi are applicable to all readers.” Carnett cites as his influences Orhan Pamuk (My Name is Red) for his attention to detail and Susan Barker (Incarnations) for her untraditional approach to capturing Asian culture in her stories. While Carnett states that he is hesitant about writing a sequel, due to political pressures in China, he says, “I am immensely thankful that Partridge Singapore has allowed me an opportunity to share my story with the world.”

6 Ways to Get the Most Out of A STEP-BY-STEP TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK EachAPPROACH Writing Session Every writer who has finished writing a book knows that it is essential to have a writing routine if you want to complete your manuscript. This means setting aside a certain time each day for a writing session. Furthermore, it is important to observe certain rules during those writing sessions to make them productive and efficient. Below, we offer six proven tactics for getting the most out of your writing sessions. Remember that five hundred words is all you need: Yes, that’s right. A writing session needs only to produce five hundred words. It is a question of simple arithmetic: Writing five hundred words a day, six days a week, yields three thousand words per week, which means twelve thousand words per month. At this rate, within five months you will have sixty thousand words, which is the word count of a three-hundred-page novel. Push yourself each day to write five hundred words—the number sounds larger than it is. To give you an idea, this article itself is only slightly over five hundred words! Be relaxed: Don’t apply the same stress to writing as you do to your job. Passionate as you are, writing your book is not a matter of life and death. If you do overstress it, you’ll eventually start to look for ways to avoid your writing sessions. Choose the writing format that best relaxes you: handwritten or typed, lying in bed or at a desk. Don’t wait for the perfect atmosphere: E. B. White, author of renowned children’s stories Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little, says that “a writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word to paper.” If your home is too loud, go to a library. If that is not possible, then get earplugs. But accept that you will not find the perfect conditions, and make the best of the conditions that you have. Don’t try to write the perfect passage: This will be done during the rewriting stage. The composition process of a novel involves the following stages: writing, rewriting, editing, and proofreading. While in the writing stage, your objective is to get your ideas onto paper with some level of coherence and flow. Your aim is not to write the most felicitous phrase you can conceive of. Failing to observe this rule will result in the complete stultification of your writing process and a book that takes years and years to write. Don’t edit while you write: Grammar, punctuation, and spelling can wait until the editing stage. As mentioned above, there is an editing stage, which follows the rewriting stage. Deciding whether to use a comma, or constantly correcting your grammar, will consume large amounts of your time and tire you out, detracting from the energy you need to produce words. Lastly, don’t interrupt your writing to do research: Research is a lot easier than writing—and in many ways, more fun. Regardless of how integral research is for your book, a writing session is a writing session, not a research session. Research will not write your words for you, and it certainly won’t get your book finished!

Preparing for Your First Book Signing A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK

In an earlier issue of BookMad, we talked about non-bookstore locations to consider for your book signing. This time, we’d like to talk about how self-published writers can make their signings an effective, fulfilling experience, through careful planning. Sure, you could just show up, sit at a table with a stack of your books, and sign one when a customer stumbles across you, but there are some simple preparation steps you can take to help you sell more books and find new readers! Find out what the location will do (or supply) for you. Don’t assume that your signing location will take care of marketing, promotion, etc., especially if you’re not signing at a bookstore. You might be responsible for producing advertising posters, for example. Make sure you ask the right questions; aside from providing a table and chair, your location might expect you to handle everything. Help with getting the word out. Even if the location is going to handle some promotion, give them a hand! Make sure you get the word out via your social media accounts, your workplace bulletin board, and any other appropriate places for an advertisement. Consider local newspaper space—if you can do it economically and within your marketing budget. And don’t be afraid to ask if the paper might be willing to do a feature on you! Bring the right supplies. Make sure you pack a couple of permanent, archive-safe pens, as well as a notebook for customers to use to spell their names before you sign the book. If you have personalized book markers, refrigerator magnets, or other gifts, bring a healthy stock of these too. It also helps to have a sign-up sheet for your e-mailing list (if you have one), as well as some sticky notes so customers who buy multiple copies can identify who each book is for. Stay in touch with the venue. Especially if you’re coming into town from another location, stay in frequent contact with the signing location. Don’t just show up five minutes before the signing is scheduled to start! As the date approaches, contact them a week before, the day before, and even the day of the event to make sure everything is proceeding smoothly. This reassures the location too, as they don’t have to wonder if “that author” is going to show up. Write your own store announcements. If the location has an intercom system, you’ll want them to announce that your signing is going on. Remember—even bookstore employees might not be familiar with you or your book. Write a few brief announcements for them to use at various points during the signing. That’s all for this time, but in our next marketing article, we’ll talk about booksigning tips you can use while your signing is actually going on!

Writing Space Operas A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK

A subgenre of science fiction, the “space opera” consists of a combination of space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary conflict, and risk-taking. Stories within this genre almost always take place in a science fiction setting. Space operas can range from focusing on a handful of characters acting within a single solar system, to a Russian novel’s worth of characters acting across a galaxy. Examples of books, series, and whole franchises set within this genre include Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, the Berserker series, Firefly, Ender’s Game, and The Expanse, to name but a few. Balance the Spectrums Finding and navigating the balance between key elements of a space opera is critical for those attempting to write in this subgenre. Consider the opposite (but not opposing) elements to be sitting on a spectrum. A good story should not purely be on one end of each spectrum, nor does it need to always stay in the middle for the whole story. Where and when your space opera moves along these spectrums is ultimately up to you and the kind of story you want to tell. The Science and the Fiction The first balancing act is that between the science and the narrative. Two works that occupy different ends of this spectrum respectively would be Star Trek and Star Wars. While the “science” of Star Trek can be highly debated, it does often play a central and dominating part in the narrative. At times, entire episodes and plotlines will deal with encountering and understanding a strange and new piece of alien technology. On the opposite end of the science-narrative spectrum is Star Wars. There, the science is only loosely described, primarily serving as backdrops and tools for the narrative. The People and the Politics To one degree or another, the narrative of a space opera tends to focus anywhere between individual characters (the people) and society at large (the politics) within the setting. In a space opera both elements have roles, though how important and emphasized those roles are is up to you. But whichever is your focus, be sure not to neglect the other. The people, for the purposes of this article, refers to your main characters: those who are the focus of your narrative and whose actions drive your narrative. The people provide the main emotions with which the readers are to connect. They are also the lenses through which readers will experience your science fiction universe—its societies, its technologies, and its politics. Politics help readers better grasp the scope and scale of your story. Even the most character-centric and driven space operas do not ignore the existence and role of politics within their settings. In various episodes and in its film finale, the series Firefly featured politics, implying or outright showcasing the larger ramifications of the characters’ actions on the setting and vice-versa. Buildup and Action The final element we will tackle is that of buildup and action. A recurring narrative component for space operas is that of multiple contradicting or coalescing forces on top of each other, building pressure, until something lights the spark that sets off a cascade of disaster. A perfect example of this in modern media is that of The Expanse. In the setting of The Expanse, the three factions of Earth, Mars, and the Belters (heavily oppressed workers suffering dangerous living conditions in the asteroid belts), each have their motivations and goals that make them all resent each other, distrust each other, and ultimately prepare to kill each other. In addition, there are groups and individuals who seek to take advantage of these tensions for their own ends. The main characters—the crew of the ship Rocinante, various members of the Earth and Martian government and military—act to prevent full-scale open war.

Writing Sword & Sorcery Fantasy A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK

The term “Sword & Sorcery” originates from the author Michael Moorcock. In a published letter to a magazine in 1961, Moorcock demanded a proper name for the types of fantasy and adventure stories written by the likes of Robert E. Howard, who created the character Conan the Barbarian. Using such characters as Conan and such settings as Conan’s Hyperborea, Howard played an integral part in establishing an entire genre now recognized as Sword & Sorcery fantasy. Here, we examine the key elements of the genre for when you write your own Sword & Sorcery fantasy novel. The Sword… The “sword” aspect of the name refers to the action and combat that are an indispensable part of the genre. Fighting, battle, and action are key to Sword & Sorcery, going all the way back to the Conan the Barbarian stories. Almost as a rule, the central protagonist is very martially skilled by the standards of the setting. Stories of this genre should also be action-driven, not simply having swordfights for the sake of it. Action scenes should always have a point and purpose. Sword & Sorcery stories should also be fast-paced and dynamic. … and the Sorcery Sorcery refers to the more magical and fantastical elements of the genre. While magic plays an integral part, much like in many other fantasy genres, magic in Sword & Sorcery stories tends to be depicted as strange, dangerous, and unnerving—and thus best to be avoided altogether. Often in such stories, magic demands a high price—usually blood and human sacrifice, and it usually twists the sorcerer either physically or mentally; it can also, at times, backfire. This trend applies to magic weapons. Druss, a prominent and recurring character throughout the novels of David Gemmell, at certain points wields the magic axe Snaga. A deadly weapon, Snaga contains a powerful and bloodthirsty demon that tries to corrupt its wielder with its thirst for blood and death. It’s Personal Another key element of Sword & Sorcery stories is the scale. The stakes tend to be smaller in scale while still being important and impactful to the characters and readers. Rarely is the feeling in such stories one of “if the protagonist fails, the world will end.” The conflict should feel very personal for the characters, and hence it will feel more personal for the reader. Common motivations in Sword & Sorcery stories (for both heroes and villains) include personal vengeance or self-interest. While such motivations can range from the sympathetic to the highly questionable, usually people get such motivations. And this is not always the case. In many David Gemmell novels, which often feature themes of revenge or self-interest, protagonists are as often driven by love or a will to do the right thing. Morally Ambiguous Characters Protagonists within the Sword & Sorcery genre tend to be a combination of positive and negative qualities, resulting in flawed and very human characters for the readers to follow. It should be noted that the flaws should not be allowed to overshadow the positive and likeable character traits, thus running the risk of alienating readers. Interestingly, the reverse works perfectly well with villains. Having your villain display likeable and respectable qualities gives him depth, but be careful of forgetting that this is the character who is meant to be opposed in your story. In worst-case scenarios, readers may completely abhor the “hero” and prefer the “villain” much more.

“The Mystery Between the Seed of the Woman and the Seed of Lucifer, Finally Revealed” by Septimus Bacourt Before you read this book, you have to clean from your mind all that you already learned from religious organizations. Do not read it with your mind set up. You will never learn ancient wisdom. “The Mystery Between the Seed of the Woman and the Seed of Lucifer, Finally Revealed” is about helping you to understand two mysteries never revealed for many centuries because the religious leaders you listened to have their minds set up for one thing—their wallets. They don’t care about your soul.

Valpartha: One Woman’s Quest by Dale Shillito What would it be like to be an adventurous woman living for ten years on a spaceship bound for a distant star? What adventures would be in store for an intrepid female scientist and her male paramour exploring a vast unknown planet, half permanently frozen and dead, the other half warm and teeming with life? What would it be like for space travelers to live in an advanced matriarchal civilization, where Earth’s dominant patriarchal values are considered alien and are questioned and suppressed? These are some of the questions raised in Valpartha: One Woman’s Quest, an interstellar romance. About the Author Dale Shillito’s interest in astronomy started in his childhood days. In college, he learned from a women’s study professor about matriarchy and was inspired to pen a tale introducing the planet Valpartha. He then began a new mid-life career after obtaining a masters’ degree in geography at Temple University. He worked as a geographic specialist/cartographer for the U.S. Bureau of the Census, participating in three decennial census operations. After early retirement, he began writing again in earnest, publishing “Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life.” “Valpartha: One Woman’s Quest” is Shillito’s latest book offering. All of this is charted in the book. About the Author Terry Reynolds has been involved with transport since 1971. He has spent many years making transport accessible and was the first commercial company to do this, which has led him into the accessible holiday business. He has run over five hundred holidays worldwide and has helped many countries improve and build accessible coaches and buses. He has also worked with many tourist boards to help with access. Why Did You Come If You Leave Again? Volume 2 by Conradin Perner Why Did You Come If You Go Again? is an ethnographer’s personal account of the five years he spent in one of the remotest parts of Africa. In the author’s comprehensive monograph about the Anyuak, a little-known tribe in South Sudan, there was no space left for a portrait of the person who did the fieldwork, his professional and personal itinerary, his experiences and attitudes, his relationship with the local people—let alone for all the adventures he lived when crossing the wilderness and when struggling to stay alive. About the Author Dr. Conradin Perner has worked as a professor of French literature; as an ICRC delegate in Asia, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Africa; and as a commander of peacekeeping forces in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan. After 15 years of ethnographic research on a little-known people in the east of South Sudan, he worked as a humanitarian agent and adviser for the ICRC, UNICEF, and UNESCO and eventually as a senior peace adviser for the Swiss government in South Sudan. He published books and articles in the field of literature, language, ethnology, human rights, culture, and peace building. WHY DID YOU COME IF YOU LEAVE AGAIN? You Belong by Sayeh Dashti You Belong is a book of oral history and human anthropology and is a memoir inspired by a recorded cassette tape of my mother (Bibi Sediqeh). Listening to my mother’s recorded voice and subsequently transcribing her words now as a mature person is enabling me to appreciate the magnitude of each event and fills me with the deepest regret for losing the precious moments when she was alive and present and eager to talk. The stories my mother told over and over were pieces of history—pieces of the history of our family, our country, and the world. About the Author Sayeh Dashti is a true representative of holding a ‘dual citizenship.’ Iran is the first place where she was born and shaped. United States, a second sanctuary cultivated her awareness and vision of the universal world. It is over 20 years that her base is in Iran, living and practicing as a psychologist in Tehran. However, the United States remains a home for all her children, grandchildren and herself.

2016: The Campaign Chronicles by JD Foster

This book is a chronicle of the 2016 presidential campaign, which began the day after the 2014 mid-term elections and written as events occurred. It provides one perspective on how these events were perceived at the time, and it also places these events in the contexts of the times regarding relevant current domestic and world events, as well as policy and political developments in Washington, D.C. Throughout the campaign, the author retained a firm neutrality as between the various candidates, which was not a serious challenge. Most candidates did some smart things and some not so smart things.

A Hero’s Journey by Mose M. Kinsey

Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and can be either male or female. They are everyday people in our communities and society. The label “hero” is given to someone for many reasons. A hero can be someone who inspires others to do something good for themselves and others. A hero is one who sets high standards for the self; someone whose deeds and accomplishments are worthy of praise by others. He is a person who is not afraid to stand up for what is right; someone who helps when the benefit and praise is knowingly going to someone else.

Poems for Yuppies (And Also for Normal People) by Stephen Blum A dermatologist who has been writing light verses as a hobby for fifty years, Blum was primed for this activity by his upbringing. His mother was a college English teacher who published her own book of humorous poems. He grew up listening to Gilbert and Sullivan operas and reading the poems in Lewis Carroll’s Alice books. Poems for Yuppies makes fun (in a kindly way, Blum hopes) of yuppies, of the author, and of people in general. While most of the verses are verbal cartoons, a few non-humorous poems are thrown in to add variety and interest.

Musings on the Dark is inspired in myth, superstition, and old wives’ tales. Add a pinch of truth; fact and fiction coexist in this collection of fantastic accounts. Silvia Font sifts the mediocre to find the exquisite, be it darkly humorous or frankly macabre. She believes that wandering away from the light of reality into the dim unknown may actually protect our sanity, or at least provide some poetry in a world of inescapable hard news and pitiless technology. Some of these stories will make you smile. Others, more often than not, will creep you out.

Shattered Shells by Frederick G. Giel In a delightful memoir, the author looks back on the curious journey which brought him to a high school seminary on the University of Notre Dame campus in 1964 to study for the priesthood. There, in the boarding school’s cloistered setting, his days were occupied by prayer, study, silence, and labor, providing a straight and narrow path to ordination. Still, his better angels couldn’t distance him from mindless mischief and egregious misconduct. Banishment followed, pushing him into the clutches of the outside world. Years later, he returned to the same campus, this time in the prestigious law school. With the benefit of hindsight, the author reflects on past failings and lessons learned.
