Fantastic Words and How to Write Them SOME TIPS FOR CREATING AND USING ORIGINAL WORDS FOR YOUR FANTASY SETTING There is a freedom in writing fantasy fiction that is found in few other genres, save for science fiction. In both fantasy and science fiction, the author is free to create and wield terms and concepts nonexistent in modern usage, more so the former than the latter. But within that freedom lays a trap. Too often, fantasy writers have found themselves so excited, so caught up in the wondrous world they have created, that they succumb to temptation and create whole new words and terms beyond any reader’s prior experience. There is nothing wrong with original concepts, terms, or phrases, as these can better shape an author’s world. However, problems can occur when they are too alien or insufficiently introduced to the readers. When creating your fantasy world you will need words, terms, and names to identify the people, places, cultures, and practices within it. Nonetheless, be extremely careful in making up words wholesale. Overdoing it when it comes to naming a concept or practice that will be foreign to your reader has been known to drive readers away and consequently threatens the book with the label of being impenetrable. This is especially the case when the concept that involves your word is itself unique to your story and setting. When you create fantasy words, consider the following: Is a whole new word necessary? Unless a concept is sufficiently different from anything in common parlance as to warrant its own word, then consider whether having a brand new word is worth possibly alienating readers. How often will the word be used? The more often or more important a word is, the more you need it to easily stick in a reader’s head. If a word is too strange or alien to a reader, even when it is important, they might not recognize the word or its meaning at the most vital points in a story. Can you use existing words instead of completely made up ones? Instead of using completely made up words beyond any reader’s prior experience, you can use more recognizable words, just not in the conventional manner. For example, instead of coming up with an entirely made-up name for a poisonous flower you could call it a “banelily,” identifying it as a flower with “lily” but also implying something malignant or harmful with “bane.” Draw inspiration from historical and real-life examples. While you should not use exact copies of existing places and names, you can certainly experiment with them to create something new. Can you use context to express a word’s meaning? Even if you do use entirely original words to identify or name something, a reader should be able to parse out its meaning from the context. A cardinal rule is that if you need a paragraph of exposition to get a single word’s meaning across, then you should strongly reconsider the word you plan to use.

Thinking Outside the Bookstore SOME TIPS FOR CREATING AND USING ORIGINAL WORDS

A book signing is a great way to meet your readers (and potential readers) face-toFOR YOUR FANTASY SETTING face and to help them see you as a real person with a personality—not just a name on a book spine. A person who knows and likes you is more likely to buy your book and to recommend it to others. Plus, meeting an author in person adds an element of interest to the book, making it more likely that a customer will give it a try. Many writers, however, don’t look much further than brick-and-mortar bookstores when they decide to host a book signing. Don’t limit yourself! Being creative when you select a location can help you meet more of your target audience—people that are already interested in your topic. Let’s talk about some nonbookstore locations for your next book signing: Supermarkets or cooking supply stores: If you’ve written a cookbook, supermarkets and kitchen equipment stores are a great place for reaching people who are interested in cooking and culinary arts. Military bases: Most military bases have exchanges, many of which have book sections. If your book is a technological thriller, a spy story, or is concerned with military history or warfare, members of your potential audience are probably at your local military base. Historical sites: Of course, if you’ve written about a particular person or location, hosting a signing at places related to your subject is a no-brainer. But can you host a signing for your Viking history text at the local colonial village? Sure! That’s a great place to meet readers who are interested in history; just because they’re visiting a colonial village doesn’t mean it’s the only historical period they’re interested in. Fitness centers: Gyms and fitness centers are a perfect location for book signings in the health and exercise genres. Consider these locations for cookbooks too if you’ve used recipes that have a healthy angle to them. Movie theaters: Perhaps a movie has been made about your subject. You could schedule a theater book signing to coincide with its show times. If not, look for films in your genre; horror films attract fans of a good scare, and period films attract an audience that might be interested in your historical novel. In a future issue, we’ll provide some preparation tips for your book signing after you’ve found a location. In the meantime, if you have trouble arranging a book signing in your local bookstore, think about alternate locations that might be even more appropriate for your subject or genre. You might find new readers, discover new ideas for future writing projects, or just have a great time!

Courage Conquers Pain by Maxine J. Alleyne-Toby Andrea Ralston grew up in a small town in Jamaica, West Indies, bolstered by love, nurturing, and faith; but day-to-day existence wasn’t easy for the young girl beset by poverty, discrimination, and marginalization. A life of struggle equipped Andrea to rise to various challenges: failed romances, intrigue, heartache, and disappointment. But one day, she encountered a seemingly insurmountable test of courage, and only through faith, determination, and self-belief could she emerge from the ashes. The protagonist serves as an example—especially to women—that unwasted pain is the ultimate definition of empowerment.

October by Lewis Ashman One would like to be carried away into the delight of what is only the imagination running clear and free through a sky at evening sparkling with the sides of the enormous clouds still catching that last stretch of light. Mildly the October days meld into one vast single day of leaves crumpling and breaking and the brilliant hills with their swathes of color gradually drain down to bare limbs and a troubled ground. So we would be friends in a fundamental sense. And so our thoughts would run parallel and never again reach the inevitable conclusions of night.

However, before they could complete the craft, a rogue black hole is racing toward the solar system, an imminent threat to their plans and lives. Will they survive and ultimately succeed?
