BookMad Bookshelf features a wide spectrum of titles and topics. In each issue, we share our love of good literature with readers and budding writers alike. Check out our Winning Tips for Aspiring Authors section for practical, helpful advice on how to craft your next masterpiece. What the Critics Say About, a section devoted to book reviews, allows you to read objective feedback from notable names in the industry—helping you discover your next literary purchase or gauge which titles match your interests. Here’s what some critics and literary observers are saying about some of our recent releases: “These edifying rhyming tales deliver morals in a delightful way. Michelle Chin summons the spirit of Aesop’s Fables in her delightful picture book, The Little Book of Animal Stories.” ~ Foreword Clarion on Michelle Chin’s The Little Book of Animal Stories: Part I
“Saint Thérèse’s compassion and strength of character, and Wright’s portrayal of her, reach across barriers of religious differences.” ~ Foreword Clarion on John D. Wright’s The Smallest Spark
“The Old West is brought vividly to life in this sardonic and pleasurable collection.” ~ Foreword Clarion on Timothy Shambley’s Slade River
Once again, we extend congratulations to our authors on completing their book and getting their presence known in the market. We look forward to more great achievements!

Ten Universal Truths of Marketing I believe passionately that good marketing essentials are the same. We all are emotional beings looking for relevance, context, and connection. ~ General Electric vice chair Beth Comstock
The competition for your audience’s attention grows fiercer by the year, with new authors, YouTubers, bloggers, and content providers hoping to grab some of the spotlight for themselves. For better or worse, how you market your book is almost as important as what you write on the page. Or, to put it bluntly, “Content is king, but marketing is queen—and she runs the house!” In this article, we’d like to talk about marketing but with a slightly different focus than usual. Our advice is usually targeted at self-publishing authors, with tips on book promotions, signings, etc. This time we’ll take a step back and present ten tips that apply to all types of marketing, regardless of the product and message. You do need a marketing plan. Sales won’t just happen without effort on your part. Make a marketing strategy that outlines your message and tactics, while taking into account your personal strengths and weaknesses. Aim for simplicity. Make sure your message is simple and clear—don’t make your customers figure out what you’re selling! The means of delivery might change, but marketing principles don’t. A decade ago, your website was the most important thing (and still is one of the most important things). Some would argue that today it’s social media. What will it be ten years from now? It doesn’t matter—solid marketing principles are still applicable, regardless of the medium. Include testimonials. Praise from satisfied customers gives a much stronger impression than self-praise. Customers care about themselves, not about your product. They want to know how your product will make their lives better or make them happier. Marketing must lead to selling. Creativity, imagination, ingenuity—these things are all great. But if the customer remembers your marketing and not your product, you’ve failed. Target your customers. It’s easy to waste time and money marketing to people who would never buy your product. Find your best, most likely customers and market to them. The most important marketing skill is listening. Listen to your customers, your audience. What do they like? What do they need? What are they looking for? Your marketing is only as good as your data. Or, to put it another way, “She who has the best data wins.” How you make people feel defines your brand. Remember that emotions drive people’s purchasing decisions—how they feel when they use your product, as well as how they feel when interacting with you or your team. One final tip: Don’t get discouraged! If you’re new to marketing, start slowly within your comfort zone. Why not try a signing at a local bookstore or a reading at your library? Or, if you prefer working online, create an author page on your favorite social media site and interact with readers there. The important thing is that you get started and build from there!
Think Globally, Act Locally: A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH TO MARKETING YOUR BOOK Many of us start marketing our books with the notion that we will be famous throughout the world because of the internet. Indeed, we can spread the word about our book with tremendous speed through the internet, especially social media. However, the reality is that publicizing your book and getting recognition is not that easy. Sending Facebook posts and tweets about your book may give publicity, but that publicity is just you talking about your book. It does not have the gravitas of a book review or media appearance—that third-party credibility to back it up. People will always believe a third party before they believe the person who is selling the product. Having this recognition will differentiate you from the thousands of other people who have published a book and are spreading it around the internet. Basic Steps So you want to think about how you can gain that recognition and exposure. It requires a step-by-step approach. In addition to telling everyone you know about your new book and posting it on your social media accounts and blog, the first step is to contact your local newspaper. If you are from a moderately sized town, chances are that not many other people have published a book—it is still a noteworthy accomplishment that impresses most people. Talk to the newspaper and see if they can do a short (or preferably, lengthy) write-up on you. The smaller the town you are from, the easier this will be. If this works—which it should—you now have an asset: a third-party mention of your book by an official organization. Make a pdf or JPEG of this article so you can send it to people and post it on your social media accounts. Intermediate Steps Having started at the most basic local level, you now expand slightly: contact your county newspaper and see what they can do for you. At the same time, ask people (librarians, people in academia, people in professions related to your book) to read your book and write a short review. These will be good for blurbs, when you are asked for them. You can also contact review companies like Foreword, who will review your book for a fee. Getting a book review or article in the county newspaper will be tougher, but make that a goal to be persevering toward. If there is a book review or books section, contact them, but if they are not forthcoming, contact the section of the newspaper most relevant to your book’s subject. The Big Steps Once you have a review in the county newspaper, you are now at a level where minor TV stations may take an interest in you. “Local author with a review in the country gazette”—you are now newsworthy. Again, make a pdf of your article and put it on social media. Persist in getting a minor TV station to invite you onto its news program or other type of talk show. When you have an interview or other TV appearance, you now have something extremely powerful. You can post this on Facebook and Twitter as well as your YouTube channel—very easy to create. You can start sending this video to the more well-known TV stations, who will see that you’ve already received the “stamp of approval” of being invited to appear on television. Meanwhile, make sure that more people of influence are receiving copies of your book. If you’ve been featured in two newspapers and on TV, people will want to know what all the hype is about. These people can potentially back you up if you are asked for references or additional reviews by the well-known TV station. Naturally, popular TV stations are picky about what they put on the air, and you may find them unwilling at first. Keep at it, and keep marketing your book to those around you and their connections, always trying to get more high-profile people to read your book. As your book becomes more popular, TV stations will have no choice but to report it!

“Bonding together for husband and wife entails social adjustments in character, interests, and use of time and resources to make one another the object of attraction.” Happily married Nigerian clerics Jacob and Rosita Adeniran have partnered to create a guide to successful matrimony. They begin by lamenting the current state of marriage, in which poor parenting skills are the unhappy result of the lack of good parenting role models. Such role models are scarce in part because couples don’t try to stay together in mutual respect and love. One key component to a loving marriage is sexual satisfaction. Clement is a Civil Servant with the Delta State Government in Nigeria and a graduate of the National Open University, Nigeria. He enjoys reading, football (as a spectator and as a participant) and writing. He agrees that errors are part of a man’s daily life and he is ready to compromise on a host of issues outside the issue of his salvation. He believes that Christ became imperfect for us on the cross so that we may attain perfection and that God is our potter and we are His clay therefore we are what He says we are. Smoke and Mirrors: Police Dreams by Jordan P. Castro Officer Brandon Rose has answered ambition’s call, befriending sixteen-year-old Giselle, a sexually precocious lookout for a pack of monstrous drug dealers. The overzealous climber manipulates his taboo relationship with the minor in hopes that she will reveal the identities of the Ash Wednesday killers. If Giselle falls in love with Rose, she may risk her life—and his career—so that he can realize his obsessed-after police dreams, the gold NYPD detective shield. American Cobra Pilot by J.L. Bigsby Groom
Think the Marine Corps is a war-fighting organization? Think again. A marine Cobra helicopter pilot finds himself off the coast of Korea taking part in a political exercise known as Ssang Young. The goal is to conduct a marine amphibious landing. However, Captain Groom soon learns amphibious assault in practice is a dog-and-ponyshow parade, the likes of which even the Westminster dog show would envy. This story tells his journey through the lead-up, execution, and aftermath of this epic tale in the pivot, uh, I mean shift, to the Pacific. Pivot means we turn our backs. It was replaced with shift.
