COVER STORY | J.R. GONZALEZ
Despite being the author of three very imaginative novels, JR Gonzalez describes himself as having no formal training or education in creative writing. “I have no pedigree in writing, only the life I have lived and the people I have known,” he says. “I write ‘what I know,’ as they say, and I like to scare people.” Gonzalez’s first novel, Opened Windows, is a psychological thriller about abuse and its ramifications. The story centers on a man who falls in love with a woman who tries her hardest to break his heart and drive him away. “He finds out why and decides she’s worth fighting for,” says the author. In the meantime, all across town, people are dying from what the police can only describe as “spontaneous combustion.” The man thinks it has to do with her and yet has no idea of the truth.
“ More than a few people have told me they don’t read my books at night. ” His second book, Esmeralda’s Web, is his tribute to the man who inspired him, Edgar Allan Poe. It starts in 1734 during the last year of the Spanish Inquisition and ends in a Los Angeles high school, almost two hundred years later. It is a story of witchcraft, pirates, reincarnation, and teenage life. Gonzalez’s third publication with Xlibris, The Lingstroms, brings his writing more into the horror genre. “It is a story about a man who meets a woman, and they fall in love, marry, and have the 2.4 kids and a fat tabby along with the picket fence,” says Gonzalez. Naturally, things take a darker turn shortly afterward. “They end up in a house that has a secret buried underneath that changes their lives forever, and when all is said and done, they all sacrifice more than they ever thought they could,” he adds. “I use two catchphrases now,” says Gonzalez. “Sleep with the lights on!” and “Blame me for the nightmares!” He adds, “More than a few people have told me they don’t read my books at night.” Among his influences, Gonzalez counts Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. “I have made it a habit to study people and see what makes them work and what makes them quirk. Then I apply that to my characters, and it helps me to make them real,” he says. “There are real people in my stories—some based even on my close family members.” He adds that his books are inspired by life: “What I see and what I’ve been through, my nightmares and my family history, are all in there.” Gonzalez sums up his outlook on life by saying, “We need to remember what’s important to us. That there will always be a better house, a faster car, a ‘spiffier’ lifestyle, but there will always only be one mother, one family.”

THE A LIST | CHUCK SPINNER CHUCK SPINNER IS THE AUTHOR OF BOOK OF PRAYERS: TO THE HEAVENS FROM THE STARS AND THE TRAGEDY AT THE LOOMIS STREET CROSSING. BECAUSE OF THE INTEREST GENERATED BY THE LATTER BOOK, A MONUMENT WAS DEDICATED AT THE SITE OF A TRAGIC 1946 CRASH.
Tragedy and Triumph The worst disaster in the history of the Burlington Railroad occurred six months before Chuck Spinner was born, almost on his family’s doorstep. Who would have guessed that this horrific event would shape his literary career over six decades later? Born in Naperville, Illinois, Spinner graduated from Conception Seminary College in 1968 but left his seminary studies to pursue a thirty-three-year career teaching US History in high school—a career during which he was named a Martha Holden Jennings Master Teacher, a Rockefeller Scholar, and a Kent State Read Scholar.
“ Find a topic in which you have a passionate interest, one that will provide motivation and perseverance. ”
After retiring from teaching, Spinner and Patrice (his wife of forty-seven years) lived in the Lake Chautauqua, New York, area for a decade before relocating to Cable, Ohio. And it was during this period that Chuck began writing. “My first book, A Book of Prayers: To the Heavens from the Stars, is a compilation of the beautiful prayers of 118 celebrities,” Spinner says. “It’s been recommended by The Catholic Digest Magazine, Sharing the Victory Magazine, and Momentum Magazine.” His second book, The Tragedy at the Loomis Street Crossing, was inspired by personal interests. “My family lived just a block away from the intersection where the tragic train wreck of April 25, 1946 occurred,” Spinner says. “For sixty-six years, this disaster—the worst in Burlington Railroad history—remained relatively untouched by historians. Nothing about the forty-five people who lost their lives was publicly known until the publication of my book.” But geography wasn’t the only thing that motivated Spinner to follow the Loomis Street story. “I have a unique interest in this tragedy. I was born on October 22, 1946 at the same hospital where the injured passengers from the train wreck were taken six months previously. In fact, at the time of my birth, there were still three patients in recovery at the hospital. It’s quite possible that these patients saw me in the nursery, never knowing that the baby they were viewing would write their stories sixty-six years later!” During five years of painstaking research, Spinner uncovered the histories of the forty-five victims, interviewed eye witnesses, and talked with both survivors and rescue workers. His hard work was rewarded over six decades later, when a monument was erected at the crash site because of the interest generated by his book. “The monument has a dual purpose,” Spinner says. “It’s dedicated to those killed or injured in the crash, of course, but it also honors the courageous rescue workers who stayed at the scene until either their bodies or the need for their help were exhausted. The sculpture, which consists of three figures created from five thousand railroad spikes and ten miles of welding wire, is truly a monument to both tragedy and triumph.” Spinner offers the following advice to aspiring writers: “Find a topic in which you have a passionate interest, one that will provide motivation and perseverance. I receive satisfaction knowing that my two books have made a positive impact on readers worldwide!”

THE A LIST | TRIVEEN NAIR PARTRIDGE SINGAPORE’S TRIVEEN NAIR TELLS US ABOUT LAND OF SEEKERS, HIS HISTORICAL THRILLER SET IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY INDIA.
Indian History, Exotic Mystery Land of Seekers is an exciting and exotic tale of Greater India in 1766. It was a time when the region was beset by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and English, who came to trade but also to loot. The novel tells a story of regicide, plunder, and the disappearance of three billion dollars in gold. “My book is a fast-paced thriller,” says author Triveen Nair. “What makes it extraordinarily interesting is that the events of the three kings’ deaths within a week in 1766 has been an enduring mystery for many historians. I fictionalize the event and lend a motive.”
“ Follow your heart and take the plunge if you know that there is something incredible you have to offer the world. ”
The action of the book focuses on four travelers. “They are from very different countries and walks of life, who get themselves entangled in an imbroglio very different from what they came to seek in this ‘land of seekers,’” Nair adds. Nair himself is no stranger to travel. Formerly a business head of a renowned FMCG company based in New York, he handled the Asia, Middle East, and Africa markets, which gave him great opportunities to travel and learn about different cultures. “Being the son of an Indian Railway Officer, traveling has always been part of my life, as my father’s job took him to different places,” he says. In addition to travel, Nair’s writing—especially narration and plot—is also influenced by writers such as espionage author Frederick Forsyth and South African adventure writer Wilbur Smith. “I look at my book reader in the same context as my own reading habits. A thriller needs to be fast-paced, no-nonsense, and thoughtprovoking. Like a Dan Brown novel, things are happening so fast that it becomes unputdownable,” Nair says. Nair cites two particular incidents that inspired him to finally sit down and write. One was a New Year’s party where he was dared to do something challenging and different. The other, he says, “was a trip to Sabrimala, a holy place, with my mother. The long drive with her, and hearing her great-grandparents’ stories, inspired me.” Land of Seekers seems poised to garner significant media attention. “The book is being covered by Publishers Weekly and the New York Times,” says Nair. “It will be in Readers Digest India. Besides, it will be on local Indian media channels as well as in magazines.” As for Nair’s publishing experience, he says, “The Partridge experience has been an incredible learning experience for me. It is like having a seven-course meal in a fancy restaurant: you loved what is on your plate, and you are eager for each next course. I am glad the journey was done with the experts.” Nair offers future novelists this piece of advice: “Follow your heart and take the plunge if you know that there is something incredible you have to offer the world.”

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
So you have an author website, a couple of social media sites for your book, and you’ve even done a signing or two at your local bookstore. What’s next? Why not give a book video a try? Today, we offer nine tips for making a video for your book. We won’t teach you everything you need to know, but we’ll give you some ideas to keep in mind when you’re ready to start filming. Read on!
Keep it short. A minute or less is fine for a book video. While a film preview is typically two to two and a half minutes, you should aim for television commercial length (thirty seconds) or a little longer. You don’t want to scare potential viewers away with a five-minute video. Look for role models. Videos are becoming common parts of book marketing strategies, and you should have no trouble finding examples online. What do you like or dislike about the videos you watched? Keep budget in mind, though; the book video for a bestselling author probably had a much higher production budget than you’ll have. Use storyboards. These comic panel–like descriptions of each scene are a great (and inexpensive!) way of planning your video. Don’t worry about your artistic ability; the storyboards are just a reference for you and your camera operator. A storyboard mistake costs one index card, but a mistake once you start filming can cost you some serious time and money! Make a script. Don’t just narrate your back cover blurb, although that’s a decent place to start for script ideas. The video element means you should need less narration. Write a script that fits what the viewer will be seeing on the screen. Avoid filming actual book scenes. Unless you have top-notch actors, it will just make your video look cheesy. Plus, for genres like sci-fi and adventure, or period pieces, a five-second scene from your book could cost more than the rest of the video combined. If you’re not a filmmaker, find one. Filming, sound, visual effects, editing— if you’re not proficient in these skills (and don’t have the time to become proficient), surround yourself with people who are. You don’t need a Hollywood-sized crew, but you should at least have a knowledgeable camera operator, editor, and sound engineer. And speaking of sound… Don’t use the camera microphone. Want to ruin your video? Use the builtin microphone on the camera. These are fine for a birthday party but not for a professional book video. Use dedicated microphones, amps, and someone proficient in using them. Don’t forget crucial info. Remember to tell the viewer where they can get your book! You should also mention your author/ book website. Be realistic. It’s much better to have a simple, well-made video than an elaborate but poorly made video. There’s no need to compete with large publishers and their budgets. You only need to make people interested enough in your book to buy it—not win an Oscar! We look forward to seeing your book video!
WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
The 1980s have never been hotter, with everything from TV shows (Stranger Things) to books and movies (Ready Player One) looking back at the culture and entertainment of that decade. That interest extends to “pen and paper” role-playing games (RPGs), which were an early creative outlet for some of today’s biggest writers, actors, and filmmakers. And while their popularity has declined a bit since their heyday, there’s still a thriving RPG market out there, with enthusiasts playing in every genre you can imagine: fantasy (Dungeons and Dragons, the granddaddy of them all), sciencefiction (Traveler), and horror (Call of Cthulhu). There are even RPGs based on the “feel” of the eighties (Tales from the Loop). So for all of you tabletop gamers and RPG writers out there, we present five tips for writing your own role-playing game.
Don’t plagiarize! Remember—making a fantasy setting of your own is fine; making a game that takes place in Middle Earth or Hogwarts isn’t. Since we’re discussing writing with eventual publication in mind, be careful not to use settings, concepts, or characters that belong to someone else. Rules “heavy” or “light?” Some gaming systems have hundreds of pages of rules, covering every possibility; others can be summed up on a single page— freewheeling systems that rely heavily on the players’ creativity (and the gray area in between these two extremes is vast). Decide what kind of system you want, and be consistent! Think about expansions. On one hand, you want to include enough information in your basic rulebook(s) for them to be usable by themselves. On the other, you should leave yourself directions in which to expand. Take a fantasy game, for example: you might include one hundred spells in your basic rulebook but later publish a magic expansion with two hundred more spells. Find a great artist! Artwork is critical in RPG publications. A book’s artwork makes the book more pleasing to the eye and also allows the players to visualize your setting. Good artwork can set the tone for your entire game— don’t skimp on it! Playtest, playtest, playtest! As is the case with all drafts, it helps to give your draft to trusted readers for feedback. With games though, you also have to playtest them! Do your combat rules work? Is your character-creation system resulting in players that are too powerful? Too weak? Playtesting is when you discover these problems so they can be fixed. While we all love computer gaming, don’t be afraid to put down the phone or PS4 controller once in a while and return to the days of a tabletop, some dice, a couple of friends, and loads of fun.
Coup d’État in the Land of Zep Tepi by Buiteboer “If you have ever wondered where the human obsession with the apocalypse came from, if you ever wanted to know why the world did not come to an end on 21 December 2012, as prophesied by the Mayan calendar and propagated by paranoid Apocalyptomaniacs, then Coup d’état in the Land of Zep Tepi: A Progress Report, is for you. Author Buiteboer exposes how a legend from Central Africa explains the extreme violent obsession humans and their religions have with catastrophes, apocalypses, and the like.“ About the Author Buiteboer likes to describe himself in many different ways. Sometimes he is an outfiltration technician – meaning that he finds ways of dislocating consciousness from the here and organic now of planet earth. The goal with which is to outfiltrate into intangible spirit, or, other imaginary off-worldly realms.

Overrun by Jeffrey H. Ahlin “Overrun is a dramatization and summary of many experiences that the author and his colleagues experienced in Vietnam and in Southeast Asia between the summer of 1969 and the summer of 1971. This was a tumultuous time in American history, and many of the experiences retold in this book may be shocking or at the very least surprising to readers of a later generation. The book takes a historical perspective of living in a naval warship in a war zone and an intense look inside Vietnam, where we were trying to help the South Vietnamese achieve political and economic stability. The book asks an important question: what has happened to prisoners of war who did not return at the end of the conflict? “ About the Author Jeffrey Ahlin (CDR) is a clinical dentist in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He has published in scientific literature, including the American Orthodontic Society, the Journal of Headache, and several other professional publications. He has authored two textbooks on maxillofacial orthopedic technique and has lectured and taught at Tufts and Harvard Schools of Dental Medicine as well as lectured in several foreign countries. What awaits them?“ About the Author My name is Nicola Di Matteo. I was born in Italy in 1964. I grew up in a lovely small village on the Samnite mountains. Natural Born Leader by Robert L. Schmidt
“Natural Born Leader takes America’s scandalous and embarrassing presidential political history to the next level. Billionaire Ronald Tripp covets the Republican presidential nomination. The Ronald’s first dirty deed is to record the frontrunner caucusing with a porn star. When his eldest son drops out, Senator George Flowers Sr. runs his younger son instead. George Jr. brings some baggage-an IQ below 70. George Jr. isn’t your typical candidate, but voters don’t notice. While The Ronald tries to return America to the 1950s, George Jr. delivers a vision for America that could only spring from a child’s imagination.” N a t u r a l B o r n L e a d e r - A Tribute to t he A merican Poli ti cal System Robert L. The Biblically-Driven Church: How Jesus Builds His Body by Cliff McManis
How does a church grow? Who builds the church? What is the real, honorable church growth anyway? Sadly, there is much confusion about those questions among church members of today. Many who call themselves Christians, believers, Evangelicals or the like, voice countless disparate answers to the most fundamental questions about the church. This book, committed to the truths of Scripture, aims to paint and lead the local and universal church of God to understand the makings of The Biblically-Driven Church: How Jesus Builds His Body. It will challenge and stimulate the churches today to stay true to what God has designed.

PAINTING FACES by Frances F. Friedman
While many women working in offices were making coffee, Frances Friedman was making history. In the notoriously sexist age now being brought to life in the hit TV series, Mad Men, Fran became the first woman president of a “top ten” international PR firm, the GCI Group, a subsidiary of Grey Advertising. Painting Faces: The Art of Public Relations is a fascinating collection of case histories. It’s also an insider’s candid picture of the first woman to occupy the corner office in a major, dynamic agency ... a woman who “had it all” 50 years before anyone thought it possible.

Some of them we never want to forget. Some of them we wish that we could forget.” Welcome to the Zoo contains some of the author’s memories from 1967 to 1989 while he worked as a firefighter in Portland, Maine. Aptly nicknamed: the generation that burned the city. These stories will raise chuckles, sadness, old memories, and perhaps resentment. God for Atheists and Scientists by Tor Guimaraes God for Atheists and Scientists proposes a new religion that links a person directly to God the Universe. Over the centuries hundreds of religions have risen and fallen, but only science has improved mankind’s living conditions. After 55 years of search, this is the only view of God based on facts, and the only religion undeniable even by Atheists. Based on science it hopefully will help reverse today’s negative trends, lest mankind destroy itself by default while indulging in mysticism and the adoration of so many false gods.
