This morning started much the same as any other lazy Sunday I made tea and porridge, then flipped on the BBC News and caught President Obama’s speech in Prague. He engaged a 20,000-strong crowd and received a rapturous applause as he delivered impassioned words about the environment. He said, ‘Together, we must confront climate change by ending the world’s dependence on fossil fuels, by tapping the power of new sources of energy like the wind and sun and calling upon all nations to do their part. And I pledge to you that in this global effort, the United States is now ready to lead.’ Big words from the new boy I thought and I desperately wanted to believe what he said. If it is true and they do, any positive green efforts from America will undoubtedly trickle across to our shores and we might at last see palpable change in the way GB & Co does business with Mother Earth PLC. When it does and our governing bodies look at the many green organisations we have here, when they realise how many committed designers, manufacturers and businesses there are developing eco-protocols with pride, they might also realise the urgent need to lace together the disjointed and fragmented genius we have in this beautiful country; it’s already in place and it’s making a huge difference to local and global environments. But consumers are still being confused and misled by greenwash. They’re often blinkered in their search for a simple source of information that will guide them towards ethical and informed decisions and they often have to part with their hard earned cash in order to see the light. Enter stage left, the free ‘Book of Green’. All this from two savvy ladies collaborating two great websites, a handful of worthy distributors and one clear aim; to help ‘you’ find that light. This worldwide financial crisis we find ourselves wrapped in, combined with timely awareness of peak oil, has brought us to a pivotal point in earth’s history. One where sustainable living solutions are being brought into play for the sake of survival and the ‘Book of Green’ can aid the transition. It’s up to us as free-thinking individuals to build on these foundation blocks and strengthen our resolve and our communities, whoever is in government, whatever they’re saying, even if it’s with the best will in the world.
